The first thing you notice about this office is the exceptionally large and familiar desk, which, if you look closer; seems to have unusual scuffmarks on its surface. Perhaps it serves a less mundane purpose than simply a desk? A large and comfortable looking chair sits behind it; obviously this is Ethan’s chair though you will rarely find him sitting in it unless you've arranged to meet him here or he happens to be marking homework.

Three smaller, yet no less comfortable looking chairs are arranged facing the desk, ready for any visiting students to take a seat. While waiting you might notice a large bookcase along one wall brimming with photo frames. Pictures of Ethan in his days as a student at WADA (if you look closely at the one on the left, you might recognize a former Hogwarts staff member shuffling a pack of cards and doing one of those hit-with-the-ladies grins that former rockstars are quite good at) , one of him as a serious looking thirteen year old in Slytherin robes, a selection of him a few years ago with various dragons in the background, several cosy looking pictures with Anastasia Bunbury, a recent picture of himself with ex-professors formerly known as Lawsons, one of him on a muggle sailing ship, one of himself with a gaggle of Avalons including former Healer Caroline Avalon and former Gryffindor student Tobias Avalon, another on stage dressed in tights and holding a skull, a picture of himself with two of his former students (Dominic Denton and Copernicus Kettleburn), another several years old, of him rock-climbing with Jake (who was Upstead at the time) and one of him in Egypt working with curse breakers. There are several priceless items including a remarkably intact looking Egyptian wand, a dragon-sized harness and an early sneakoscope set in plain view.

There are two huge bookcases brimming with dusty looking tomes, several lanterns floating about and heavy velvet drapes cover the windows. These drapes like to change colours, seemingly at random, though in truth they work somewhat like a mood ring, picking up on the vibe of the room. They're edged in rune symbols.

An old looking gramophone sits on the bookcase with a selection of records stacked haphazardly to one side, various eras of music are represented; of both the wizarding and the muggle variety. On the walls his OWL and NEWT results are proudly displayed alongside certificates proclaiming his knowledge and familiarity with various Dragon breeds, as well as a far more crisp looking certificate from the Wizarding University in Cairo where he spent a year teaching magical and dead languages.

There is a floo to one side of the room, the entire thing is covered in red etched bindrunes and rune charms which almost thrum under your fingertips if you happen to touch them. They won't hurt you but they won't let you use the floo without knowing how to deactivate them either. No in. No out. As per usual, the wards and charms protecting the office are substantial, and many are particularly subtle. They won't be activated unless Truebridge is not here.

There is no need to wait outside the office unless Truebridge asks you to, You must knock and wait to be addressed before entering or you risk losing house points for being disrespectful.

Jake had gone straight to his dormitory after the feast had been declared over, depositing his Beans, sunglasses and outer robes, before taking his contacts out; they were making his eyes itch like crazy.

With his regular seeing glasses on, and wearing just the muggle aspect of his uniform, Jake then strolled up to the Runes professor's office.

To be honest, he had accidentally almost knocked on the door of the man's two previous offices, visiting the History of Magic office twice.

But here he was.

Ruffling his blond hair out of its tidy and more formal style, Jake straightened his clothes before knocking on the door, wondering if Truebridge was inside.

Jake paused for a moment before nodding, still staring at that wall. Then he slumped down in one of the smaller chairs before the desk and stared at the part of the desk he could see just above his knees.

He did sit up slightly, even though it was only 'if he pleased' and continued staring at the desk.

"Because the staff all called me rude and you were the only one who realised otherwise?" Jake tried, quite serious, but at the same time knowing he was probably being bitter... and the thought made him smile ever so slightly.

"Other than that? I got nothing."

Did he follow?

Ethan paused and then after a moment, opened his desk and pulled out a bag of miniature chocolate frogs. Sugar free. He offered one to Jake, being sure to turn the label of the bag so the boy could see what they were.

"There is also a thing called self-preservation." Something that tended to be innate in Slytherins, but Jake was a Hufflepuff and different to boot so it would possibly need to be a learned skill for him.

Jake flexed his fingers ever so slightly before gripping the arms of the chair.

"I don't know what self-preservation is, sir," the boy said as he took a moment to look at the label of the bag. It only took a couple of seconds longer than the average person before he reached out and took one.

And after another moment he remembered the, "Thanks."

"The easiest way, I find, is to save your questions for a time where there is less of an audience, or you've received a direct invitation to ask them."

The drapes changed colours, echoing Jake's confusion.

"Well if you ask it straight away it is often more impulsive, and often will be met with less respect if it is a serious sort of question. Thats when people often will claim your words as rude, as if you haven't given them enough time to come up with answers, or even ask the same questions themselves." At least that is what Zan found to be the case.

"If you wait, and approach a person with questions afterwards, generally one would assume you've truly thought about what you are asking, that you have weighted it and decided it really is an important thing to know, and that your reasons for knowing it are equally as important as the question itself." He vanished the second mini chocolate frog head, again without eating it.

"The other thing is, the reason you ask a question might be different to the reason that someone else asks the same question. Thats another thing that can change it, but isn't entirely relevant to this situation."

Vadoma skipped down the corridor, she wore a peasant blouse, a flowing brown patchwork skirt and footless sandals she had made herself using woden beads. The silver bangles on her ankles jingled as she made her way toward proffessor Truebridges office. She stood there for a moment, forgetting what she was doing then remembered and knocked on the door and stood waiting patiently.

Anyway. "Why would I ask something without having thought about it; it has to get to my brain for me to say it," the boy said quite simply, snapping off a leg of the frog he held from the side of its stomach before eating it.

He watched Truebridge for a second, noting how he vanished the heads. "Why aren't you eating the heads?" Jake asked, quite perplexed, before thinking on.

But thinking didn't help, Jake ended up pounding the arm of the chair with one concentrated outburst. "I hate people," he said suddenly, almost spitting out the last word. He was so confused with all these rules and things he was supposed to remember. "I'm told what to say, how and when to say it, the same with what I do. How long, exactly, before I'm told what I'm allowed to think?"

He would be punching things when he went back to his dormitory. That always made him feel better.

He eyed the arm of the chair and then looked at quite seriously. "I'll never tell you what you're allowed to think, Jake. Your mind is your greatest gift, and like any gift, not everyone is deserving of it."

He beheaded another frog.

"That is what I meant about self-preservation. Its a behaviour. Something a person does to ensure their own survival, usually to avoid pain, and often out of fear, but also its the instinct to live, the innate desire to be without risk of interruption or destruction by others. Sometimes to share your thoughts puts you at risk, as it did today, with your loss of points." Though in many cases the result would be far more serious.

"I just don't see why it was such a huge deal to ask the guy a perfectly valid question. I really don't. I wasn't being rude but everyone just decided to have a go at me."

Jake remained quiet for a little while when Truebridge spoke, snapping another tiny bit off the frog and nibblng at it. What he wanted to tell Truebridge was that he didn't care much for the sound of self preservation. It sounded a little too much like disguising yourself to make other, more powerful people, happy.

Jake knew of survival of the fittest... which made more sense but... yeah...

"I don't care about points," Jake said simply, and eyed the arm of the chair he'd pounded. He just shook his head. "None of this makes any sense. I mean... how do you live with all these rules and behaviours that you have to know?" Because Truebridge did know them and was telling Jake of them, so... they had to be important, didn't they?

For the first time that night, Jake glanced up at Truebridge and straight at his eyes for a few seconds.

As far as I'm concerned, it isn't a matter of... say cowardice, or running away, or not speaking up, or anything along those lines, but rather, doing the best you can to make yourself strong enough, powerful enough and respected enough to be able to say what you want when you want it, in a way that gets the result you are looking for. You have to... know the rules, in order to get away with breaking them, in order to do things the way you're built to do, without it being a problem. Self-preservation."

Headless frog.

"And I'm guessing you are looking for answers. I'd like some of those answers myself, Jake. Theres something not right about all of this but... I'm not entirely sure that is a bad thing."

"I suppose it makes sense," Jake agreed, finally. "Now, anyway. I'll probably never manage that, though," he added. Self-preservation... it sounded ridiculously difficult to recognise, let alone master.

Kazimeriz had been both of those things to Ethan Truebridge.

Zan smiled.

"Exactly." And he wasn't about to delve to deeply into that. Truebridge was under no delusions that society, or more specifically, government in the Wizarding World was 'right'. Someone coming from the ministry now, and someone who, to Ethan, did not really smell like ministry, only underscored his thoughts on the matter.

"Exactly." And he wasn't about to delve to deeply into that. Truebridge was under no delusions that society, or more specifically, government in the Wizarding World was 'right'. Someone coming from the ministry now, and someone who, to Ethan, did not really smell like ministry, only underscored his thoughts on the matter.

Jake nearly scowled. Was the man insane?! Telling him about this self-preservation thing and then not telling him how to use it... or something.

CRUEL.

The young man went quiet for a moment; good friends... ardent enemies...

He'd force Ikenna into one of those categories.

"I'm gonna be visiting him a lot," Jake said suddenly, with no explanation as to what he was talking about. "To keep an eye out and stuff."

Jake's eyes narrowed and he glanced at the Lawsons picture in the bookcase again. Probably not the best place to look. The young man only went quiet after that.

Truebridge didn't notice the scowling, but he did notice the curtains change colour. Hmm.

"I see." He paused. "Be vigilant." He wasn't about to tell the boy not to go see Gevrik. It didn't occur to him that Jake may have been talking about someone else.

Besides, Ethan intended to speak with the man too.

Katie walked up to the door and tapped lightly, if he was talking to someone then he didn't want to disturb him, she really liked Truebridge, one of her favorite professors actually, she looked down at Vixy, she couldn't help but bring her cat along, Vixy begged her, but Katie wasn't looking at Vixy, she was looking at the bag with the cupcake she made for Truebridge, she hoped he liked it.

At the sound of another knock on the door, Jake glanced over his shoulder at it before looking back up at Truebridge for a moment, and then longingly at the bookcase. Oh how he wished he could steal that bookcase.

With the books of course.

"I should be going, sir," he said, standing up. He wasn't really all that tired but had no desire to be in the room whilst other people were. Unless it was Ikenna.

Yeah.
