The trophy room houses the various trophies earned by students over the centuries. From plaques with the names of those on the winning Quidditch Cup teams to those who earned the prestigious Special Services to the School.
Renée hadn't expected anyone to find her in there, at least not while she was idly perusing the trophies and everything. It seemed this room was about as well-visited as it had been way back when. She actually wondered if the only ones who ever perused the memories stored in here were house elves tasked with keeping the dust down. She'd heard of occasional events, but the room still seemed rather quiet. As such, when she heard her name, it momentarily surprised her. She managed to hide the jump, though, and turned to Jared with a light smile. "Jared," she replied, her voice at the same cadence as his own. It was nothing if not another ability to disguise other reactions.
"I have to admit, I'm surprised to see you in here," she said honestly. Unlike herself, who actually could possibly have memories in here. Not as many as if she'd actually been on any of those plaques, but memories nonetheless. She liked the companionship, though. Being alone with memories could get stifling after too long, and besides, there was still that nagging thought about food in her head.
It seemed he had surprised her, at least a little, though she did not seem surprised, not at all, when she turned around. Calm, if anything. "That's my name," Jared agreed, grinning lazily.
"I have to admit, I'm surprised to see anyone in here." He smiled slightly, taking another step inside and glancing around the place as he spoke. Metallic glints and lustre seemed to stare back. The place did seem to possess that vague feeling of little company and unspoken secrets.
"I suppose this place gets to see more house-elves, than it gets to see humans," he said, unaware that he might have echoed a part of her thoughts.

Renée knew Jared had detected something of her initial response to his appearance, as she'd picked that up almost as soon as she'd looked at him. But she was forced to laugh at his response to her words. "In fact it is," she said, amused. Just because she'd managed to calm herself down, the laughter seemed that much more welcome. It relaxed her more as well. She shrugged, though, as the conversation continued.
"I have to admit I was thinking a bit of the same thing. I got a bit distracted on my way downstairs, to be honest." That whole goal of finding sustenance after too many hours in her office. With a bit of curiosity as to if he'd had any other thoughts simlar to her own, she watched as he stepped further inside, and smiled as he glanced at the objects in the room. "It seems the memories sort of permeate the air, something like that. I think that's what drew me in." Of course, she hadn't many true memories of her own in here, but that's what happened when one wasn't a student who'd particularly excelled in much more than mischief. And doing well in classes.
Another giggle bubbled up at his next musing comment, however. "You know? Sometimes I have to wonder what exactly you're hiding from me, Professor Descoteaux," she responded, laughter still in her voice. "Perhaps you have a bit more of my ability in yourself than you'd thought." Either that, or he was beginning to know her a bit too well.

"You can't know for sure," Jared said, his smile faint but warm. "I might be someone else in disguise." Good thing Legend Chosen didn't happen to be around, to hear that. If Jared knew the boy at all, and he felt like he did, Legend would take his statement as further proof that he had come to Hogwarts to overthrow the current Headmaster.
"I intended to take a look inside this room, at some point," Jared said, inclining his head to look at a cup, gilded and rather charming. He could see why those that had their names engraved on an item here, must be proud of their achievement or achievements. "Someone I know should have a plaque or two bearing her name, here. She has been..." Bothering me? Badgering me?"Inquiring if I've seen it." Memories? "This place does hold an amazing number." Cups, trophies, plaques, each a result of a collection of memories. The secretive touch to the atmosphere didn't surprise him, given that.
Ah? "Now what makes you think that, Professor Bishop?" Jared asked, the half-smile returning. "What could an innocent man like me, possibly have to hide?" Return of the lazy little grin.

A bit of a contemplative look came onto Renée's face at the point Jared made, as she idly wound a finger through a curl of hair that hadn't quite been pinned up by the feather. "That's true. But then, you have to admit, I'd be more likely than some to know if you were an impostor," she pointed out finally, mischievous sparkle in her eyes. At least, it would definitely be more likely if the impostor wasn't an Occlumens. In some cases, her ability came in rather useful. People could rarely surprise her. "I guess it's a good thing we don't have anyone listening, though. Who knows what rumors a comment like that might start," she added, instinctively picking up on unsaid additions to the topic, before it seemed the conversation was shifting to other ideas.
"Mmm," she said, a bit noncommittally, as he confessed to an intention to explore this room. Looking around again, she smiled at all the names that she saw, wondering what stories they had to accompany them, before she realized he'd continued speaking. "Oh? Who is it?," she asked, returning her attention to him. "Perhaps I could help you locate them." She figured she was still rather familiar with the awards and plaques that were in here, barring the new additions. Her sense of exploration hadn't left her, at least, or her tenacity. She wasn't about to pry if he chose to keep the information hidden, however. There was the distinct possibility she might prowl the room anyhow, though. It just seemed to instigate that feeling in herself. "It does," she said with a slight nod, as he responded to her comment about memories. "I'd imagine it could be said there are more than just what are directly connected to each object, even." The memories brought in by visitors and the like.
But then he'd responded to her teasing comment, and she turned to him again with an eyebrow raised, as she'd kind of gone off on a little bit of a prowl as she'd spoken earlier anyway. "Oh, nothing," she said lightly, expression flickering back to her normal amused one she seemed to get around him. "That would be quite the question, though. Given certain things . . .," she continued, trailing off a little. She knew he'd know what she was referring to, just as she knew he knew she'd let him have his secrets for now. Especially as she imagined he still hadn't figured out all her own.

"More likely than some," Jared agreed. Her ability did give her an advantage there though, he supposed, if he had been an impostor, he'd have found that out beforehand and not given her a chance to break into his mind in the first place. Her next comment caused him to shake his head, his manner not unamused. "There's a certain student that has more or less taken to calling me Professor Evil," he grinned. "Even if it is - I believe - more often to himself than to my face."
"Lily Potter," Jared said, the lazy grin growing - if that were even possible - even lazier, as he responded to her question. He doubted she had expected a straight response from him, and teasing her, even if only a little, had started to become a habit. "She contacted me personally, the other day." Back to the memories, and it seemed she had just expanded their scope. Jared gave a light nod, inspecting another cup. "It's amazing, how many years back one can go, in this place." Decades back.
"Certain things?" He looked up from the gilded cup, to catch her expression. She seemed amused, too. "Now I have to wonder what exactly you're hiding from me, Renée."

Renée sent Jared another grin as he agreed with her comment about her advantage, especially given the convoluted argument that followed. She knew he could block her, but she assumed that an impostor might be less able to. "Occlumency is just as rare as Legilimency," she replied with a wink, before listening as he spoke of student issues. Nodding slightly at his explanation, a smile crept onto her face. "So another nickname then," she commented lightly. "At least nobody thinks you'd hold creatures hostage." She really was still amused that Ellie was that determined to not like her, but it remained a challenge to break through that wall. "Most unflattering things aren't directly said to our faces, I believe. probably out of fear of losing points," she observed. "But then some flattering comments aren't as well." That was somewhat of a different concept altogether, but the spectrum of thoughts she'd seen among the students when it came to herself was quite funny.
She raised an eyebrow at the lazily given diversion to the award conversation, however. "Oh? You've taken to conversing with deceased historical figures now?," she said back, teasing tone to her voice. Especially as it harkened back to their conversation about Euripides. She knew he was teasing her, and for now it wasn't that important to pry and get the actual answer. If he didn't want an extra set of eyes in his search, so be it. And it seemed he'd gone back to perusing the trophies anyhow, and she shrugged lightly as he spoke. "I've always been curious if, given quite a bit of exploration into the corners of this room, one could find awards going all the way back in history." Past recent historical times, at least, although she wasn't sure if there would be much from the beginnings of Hogwarts.
As he'd looked back up at her, she carefully let her eyes flicker to an expression of innocence, although a hint of sparkle remained. "Whyever would you think I'm hiding anything from you, Jared?," she asked, feigned lilt to her voice as she stood there, before she laughed lightly. There wasn't much she hadn't at least alluded to in their conversations, and she had a feeling his secrets were more intriguing than her own anyway.

"But certainly not a skill that can't be learned," Jared said, as if finishing the sentence for her. "I've received more nicknames in a fortnight, than I did in the past ten years." His smile was light as the conversation returned to the topic of nicknames. And students. "Don't tell me, Renée, that you've been accused of holding a creature hostage." He'd like to know which student could come up with that. Then again, if he could be blamed for plans of treachery, Renée could be for kidnapping creatures.
"I have a feeling students can hide the unflattering comments better than the flattering ones," Jared grinned. Even though he knew he'd not deduct points from a student for an 'unflattering' comment - as long as, of course, the student had a valid reason, an actual point, and did not make one just for the sake of being disrespectful - he could see why the students might think so. Not all teachers tolerate talk and discussion that labels them or their methods anything but good. Then again, as far as he and Renée were concerned, it was more the students misjudging them and forming all sorts of conspiracy theories, than anything else. Neither of them had been told they were incompetent and, frankly, Jared knew that neither of them were. They'd not have been at a school like Hogwarts, if they had been that. Incompetent.
"Our talk about Euripides might have encouraged me to." He had that typical amused look in his green eyes now, the one that he had realized he often had around her. "That makes me curious too, actually." That in response to her comment about ancient awards. Curiosity had killed the cat, but he supposed the two of them did not have to worry about that, neither of them being a cat. "I can tell a thorough search of this room can have interesting outcomes." Names from history books, possibly printed on to a plaque or cup.
"Because of that look you just gave me?" Jared asked, his own look of amusement giving way to warm laughter.

"Of course. Yet few seem to really master the skill," Renée said with a smile. Both of them obviously did, but then that didn't need to be said. Not to mention she was aware of at least one other in the school who had mastered either ability. But then she grinned as the conversation went to nicknames. "I can't say I've had the same. I've been compared to a chess piece a couple times. And had at least one student trying not to drool, but nicknames, not so much," she replied with a shrug. Perhaps it was because her name was easier to pronounce. She didn't really worry about it, and the drooling had been quite hilarious and irrelevant. She'd had to mention it though, if they were comparing experiences. His reaction to her previous revelation met with another shrug from herself, though. Even as she was flattered at even the amused shock. "Accused? Not technically, but yes. It might have been in someone's mind, while they were trying to ignore my crup puppy in my office," she replied with a laugh. Somebody who they both knew had a simple predilection for trying to dislike her. She wasn't going to say it outright, though. He'd probably figure it out anyway.
The comment about hiding comments from him met with another mischievous grin, however. "Possibly," she said simply. Hiding things from her could be difficult, even though she didn't usually get into the students thoughts. Only when it seemed to be useful, like with certain students. It would be interesting to get into Jared's antagonist's head, actually, but she banished the thought. The theories were really quite amusing, actually. Especially as they were completely unfounded, and her comment about Headmaster Tate to Ellie came to mind again. The man wouldn't have hired either of them if they were unqualified, or untrustworthy. It didn't seem to stop the students, though, and she wondered if they had reason. She hadn't heard of any really twisted professors, at least not recently. Beyond the rumors about Hecate, and as the Potions mistress was still there, she felt her argument stood.
Another laugh bubbled up as Jared replied to her calling him out on the Gryffindor. "Once again I wonder if you can get into my thoughts," she replied lightly. "Spoken to our good old Greek friend, then?," she added, continuing the teasing. They really seemed to almost constantly amuse each other, which was fascinating. Kind of like the awards, it seemed, as he went on to confess to a curiosity himself. "Curiosity and exploration. Two concepts that intertwine often," she said softly, with a faint smile. "I'd imagine it would take quite some time to really get a thorough exploration of this room finished, but I have to agree with you anyway." Histories could always be interesting, but then she imagined he knew that. She imagined there were several people at Hogwarts who knew that, actually.
A wry grin crept onto her face as he answered her facetious question about secrets. Quite readily, actually, and complete with laughter, which made her wonder again how often he truly laughed. "I assure you, my secrets aren't half as interesting as you might think they are." Most of them could be discovered with careful research. She just preferred not talking of the incident, and her writing was secret only because she chose it to be.

"And even fewer openly admit their mastery," Jared reflected. He could see why. That could ruin the point one had acquired the skill, in the first place. Then she spoke again, and he let his thoughts move on, finding himself amused once again. "Chess piece?" He asked, his smile almost inquiring. Whyever on earth? He grinned at her mention of a student trying not to drool, though he did not say anything else on that matter. Not exactly being oblivious to how a number of the ladies at Hogwarts behaved around him, he had realized that he did not exactly know how to tackle that kind of thing.
"You have a crup?" Did female professors and pets have an undeniable bond? It occurred to him, once again, how keeping a pet might be a hassle. Though he had to admit that being at Hogwarts meant more free time, even for him or perhaps especially for him, and keeping a pet sounded far more feasible now than it had, in the past. He simply hadn't had time, before. Speaking of crups... "Ellie?" He had a feeling it might be her, and it almost surprised him that she had yet to let go of her unhappiness. He supposed he could still hope. Perhaps ask her.
"I suspect you'll know if I try," Jared grinned. She knew more about businesses of the mind than most people, and he guessed she'd know or at least realize if someone tried to break into hers. "What makes me really curious," he said, his tones light again, "Is how Euripides became an old friend of ours, without my ever knowing or realizing it." He couldn't keep back the grin that flickered across his face, then. "We should explore this room properly, at some point." He doubted he - or she - would have enough time right now, to do that. Their were some classes still scheduled for today, at least for him.
"So you say." He smiled, and there was definitely a mildly teasing touch to his smile. It is impossible to give a fixed definition of 'interesting,' and her secrets might be more interesting than she herself realized, at least to others. But he'd let her keep them to herself unless she felt like she should share, and not pry, for the simple reason that he had seen that some things simply should not be brought out into the open, and are better left unsaid or concealed.

Renée glanced at Jared with a bit of interest as he mused about the topic of mastery and such. She wondered a bit if he thought revealing oneself was helpful, but then discarded the idea. Secretive people never were supporters of revealing abilities. "Perhaps that's due to the fact others don't understand how the mastery isn't for evil reasons all the time," she replied, before smiling as it seemed he didn't understand her flippant comment about chess pieces. "Yes. Twice now, at least, although rarely to my face. My last name," she explained. The students generally only got her last name, of course, so connections would be made. "Among other things, a bishop is a chess piece." She didn't really think he didn't know that, but the explanation was made anyway. She appreciated his response to the other comment she'd made, about students trying not to drool, however, and grinned back. "At least in my case, it oddly seems to be Slytherins. Mostly." She already knew his fan club spread out wider than hers ever would, but the observation was still valid. She didn't know what it was about Slytherins that seemed to gain their attention.
His reaction to her comment about Bowie made her laugh a little, though. "I do," she said with a nod. "He's about eight months old." And technically illegal, but nobody had seen through the Disillusionment spell she often used so far. "I have a phoenix as well. Why is it you seem so surprised at me having pets?" It wasn't that odd, really. Not to mention he had to have figured out she was essentially alone here anyway, since she remembered mentioning her father and brother back in New York earlier. But any real contemplation of his reasoning fled as he accurately saw through her evasion of the Ellie situation, and she simply looked at him and shrugged. Yes, it was, but she wasn't going to complain about how complicated the situation was to him. It wasn't his place to help, or at least she didn't think it was. Not right now.
Relieved as they went on to new topics, she smiled again at his next statement. "I imagine I would, but the problem would set in when I tried to block the attempt," she said lightly. Not having mastered his specialty. She waited as he went into another instance of musing alound, however, before another grin came to her face. "Well, why not?," she asked, amused. They seemed to discuss him often enough for the deceased Greek to qualify. His comment about exploration was met with another light shrug, though. Not out of apathy, but out of a simple need to react somehow. "Perhaps. I'd imagine it would take us a while, with all our other responsibilities," she commented, only briefly thinking that she was almost voicing his thoughts again. Sometimes it was unavoidable, even when she wasn't using her ability.
"Hmm, a challenge," she replied when he denied her excuse about her secrets, going back to the usual teasing demeanor but with a bit of an edge. It was much more comfortable, really, being playful. She still theorized her secrets paled when compared to others, like what he so diligently blocked from memory. He still wasn't going to get them easily, however. Not without having to deal with more of her not being teasing and fun, since the topic naturally led to otherwise.

Evil. Secretive. Same thing, to some people. Even though he could not, of course, deny that the secretive and the dark had always had a connection. He let the thought drop as she explained the reference to a chess piece, and a half-smile slipped out. "Trust students to make connections of that kind," he said. Then again, he referred to her as Renée far more often than Professor Bishop, so that could explain the students, and not him, making that connection. Not to mention, it never had been like him to relate names to items. "Among other things," he agreed, smiling. It seemed like he wasn't the only one here, whose last name caused students to over-think.
"The Snakes are a handful," Jared agreed. He had a feeling he might have been one himself, had he attended Hogwarts but, of course, that was speculation, even if based on logic - he didn't see himself as a Hufflepuff, his Slytherin traits far outweighed his Ravenclaw ones, and, being the type to think, plan and strategize before acting, it seemed unlikely that he might have been placed in Gryffindor, a house that seemed dominated by leap-before-you-think kinds, often driven as much by impulse as by courage.
"Not surprised, really," Jared said. It just seemed that most of the staff had pets, crups and kittens being the most popular choices. "I'm just beginning to realize that not having a pet possibly makes me part of a minority on the staff. Though," he added, "I have been thinking of getting one. It'd be nice to have the company of a creature that doesn't have the perpetual urge to eat me." His grin, a little lazy, a little wry, lingered for a moment. Speaking of pets... "The phoenix is a beautiful creature to keep." Loyal too, if a person could manage to domesticate one, that being an almost titan's task in itself since phoenixes naturally preferred high, open places. "I'm impressed that you could domesticate one." It had been known to happen, quite a number of times in fact, but that didn't make the task any less a challenge.
Realizing she most likely wanted to keep her problems with Ellie to herself, Jared easily let the subject drop, grinning instead on her comment about not being able to block the attempt. "You could always complain to the Headmaster," he said, though even thinking of such a situation made him smile. He couldn't imagine himself and Renée bickering and complaining about each other, like students. And Euripides? "I give up and accept him as an old mutual friend," Jared said, laughter in his tones, though his expression turned more somber as she spoke again. "Perhaps after classes, some day," he said. They certainly did not have time for such a task, right now.
Ah. "Depends on how you look at it, mademoiselle."

Lazylittlegrin.
Renée simply watched Jared as he seemed to ponder the discussion of beliefs about their abilities. Something seemed to have hit a chord, and she wondered what exactly that was. It could be easily gotten, but she had a feeling she’d agree with the sentiment anyway, giving her reason to hold back. Not to mention he quickly had distracted her with the comment he did make, and she smiled back at him. “At this point, I’d think we should expect ideas like that from the students. And at least it’s not hurting anyone.” If it helped the students remember her name, so be it. Besides, a name was just a name. His echoing of her statement made her grin come back, as it dovetailed so well with her thoughts. It was really quite fascinating the meanings that could be given to the simplest of things. Or the most complex, if they considered his name as well. Although people didn’t seem to come up with ways to remember that, instead simply choosing others. It was interesting, really.
She laughed a little at his observation about the Slytherins. “Actually, I can’t say I’ve had many issues with the Snakes. Other than a few admirers. And Miss Skye,” she replied. That was another amusing interaction, the Slytherin girl’s continued irritation at herself. “Actually, in my first lesson, I seemed to find the Hufflepuffs more of a handful.” Specifically, Jake and Treyen, and perhaps Simon, a bit. With his desperation for finding a correct answer, when he simply needed to learn. The other two were another story altogether, although she knew a bit of Treyen’s problem was the same as Ellie. It was all so similar, yet different, to when she had been a student. But then she had hardly been the typical Ravenclaw. That tangent was dislodged by the renewal of the pet discussion, though, and she looked back to him with another smile.
“Okay, not surprised,” she said mischievously, as he denied it. “I don’t think it’s so much of a minority. Some people need the companionship of pets, while others don’t. I’d imagine there’s both here.” She giggled a little at his comment about thinking of getting his own pet, though. That only reminded her of their first conversation ever. “So no pet manticore for Monsieur Descoteaux?,” she asked, laughter still in her voice, before it calmed a little as he spoke of Anastasia. “Yes, they are, and thank you,” she said simply. There were more domesticated phoenixes now than there had been in the past, truly. “I didn’t have too much difficulty, however. I rescued her from a man in Russia who was mistreating her, while I was visiting, so the loyalty sort of stemmed from that.” That was her theory, at least. And for a moment she longed for being twenty again. It wasn’t really that long ago, but the memories were still there. Not to mention she knew she’d changed since then.
The comment about complaining to Tate brought another grin to her face, however. More for reminding her of her almost identical suggestion to Ellie in her office than anything else, but at least it was amusing. She couldn’t imagine they’d get anywhere near that point. “The mere thought of you managing to get into my head amuses me too much to think of complaining,” she replied, entertained. There was a moment of wondering if he’d find it a challenge, but then they were speaking of Euripides again. It couldn’t be said that their conversations were slow, that was for sure, and another grin graced her features. “Why thank you. I’m sure if he was around, he’d be happy we came to that conclusion,” she responded mischievously. As if they truly had to worry about the ancient’s thoughts on the matter, when it was all just teasing on their part. She let her amusement fade a little as they spoke on other subjects, though. “Maybe. I’d look forward to it, although we still have to find time for my challenge to teach you Divination,” she reminded him with a quick grin. Both pursuits sounded quite diverting, really, from the stresses of being a professor. Oddly enough.
She feigned a sigh at his response to things, though. “Isn’t that always the case?,” she went on to tease. Challenges always did depend on interpretation. And his lazy grin only spurred her on more.

Oh, he did expect ideas from students. The wrong kind. Jared nodded, amused that he - and he suspected she, too - expected the students to cause, and think in terms of, mischief. Not that that could be helped. Hogwarts, and its undeniable link to - and history of - danger and mystery, almost seemed to give one an appetite for trouble.
"I could have assumed that in advance," he said, his green eyes lighting up in a teasing manner as she referred to admirers. Now, though, did not seem like the time to discuss tactics. How to handle... admirers. He also had a feeling that even if they did discuss that, practically, he'd find himself going semi-blank again. It almost amused him, to be honest, because he had never had to face this kind of difficulty before. His eyes flickered, a more serious expression, at her mention of Rae, though. He hadn't expected her to keep Renée in her bad books, not like he had expected Ellie to. Then again, so much had happened, even in the past month and the relatively cheerful atmosphere of Hogwarts, that he found he expected most things, even random students disliking him, now.
"I can relate to that." This, as she mentioned Hufflepuffs. He had found at least one a major handful, that one being Jake. Not that the boy liked creating trouble. It just seemed that Jake had that peculiar kind of intelligence that attracted it, in one way or the other. Jared couldn't blame him. He'd taken a liking to Jake.
"There seem to be more of those that need it," Jared said, his half-smile an impulsive reaction to the mischief in her tones. It was, after a fashion, relaxing. Pet manticore? Merlin. "I value my life, thank you very much, Renée." He inclined his head ever so slightly, an amused look playing around his lips. "Though I suppose a baby dragon might make for some nice company." Until it decided it liked breathing fire and singed his hair - assuming, of course, that it did not destroy his entire office first. "Creature police." Saving phoenixes and all. "How did that come about, if I may ask?" The mention of Russia had caught his interest as much as the thought of Renée rescuing a phoenix from a man. He had a feeling her statement regarding the bird's loyalty could be entirely true, the phoenix always having been a noble bird. The kind to repay trust.
"The mere thought of me managing to get into your head amuses me too much to even think of attempting it." And it did. He couldn't see himself getting into anyone's head, not like Renée could and did, let alone hers. He'd leave Legililmency alone for now, and perhaps for later too, and trust his perception to get him satisfactorily through life. People did, after all, get through it without both. He smiled at her comment about Euripides [the poor man didn't even know he had them for old friends, did he now?] before the smile turned into pleasant laughter. "I can't imagine what kind of rumours that would generate." Him, in the North Tower, attempting to get the hang of Divination. He could see himself failing spectacularly at it even now, but that only made him want to give it a try. He couldn't turn down something that sounded like a challenge.
"Is it?" His voice carried the same teasing quality as hers as he spoke. The questions had become circular again, no real answers really, but that was fine. It meant a touch of fun. Better that, than a conversation that drags. Not that theirs ever did. Drag.

"Is it?" His voice carried the same teasing quality as hers as he spoke. The questions had become circular again, no real answers really, but that was fine. It meant a touch of fun. Better that, than a conversation that drags. Not that theirs ever did. Drag.
The very topic of student theories about themselves was quite funny to Renée. Given she was privy to the fact that at least one student had their own about herself, along with the ideas that nobody wanted her at the castle. Ellie’s accusation hadn’t really hurt, especially since she knew that it wasn’t really true. There were people perfectly happy with having her at Hogwarts. But anyway, the topic had really been related to troublemaking, and she smiled a little to herself as she remembered. Remembered being a bit of one herself when younger, which perhaps was why she understood the tendency even nowadays towards the idea. And at least it seemed the thought had amused Jared as well, or his agreement had. Either way, it worked to continue their camaraderie. And the conversation.
A bit of a curious smile crept onto her face as he finally spoke, however. Regarding the topic of Slytherins and admirers, and she glanced at him mischievously. “Are you saying you would have assumed the Slytherins would take to me?,” she asked in amusement. The other option was that he assumed she’d just get admirers in general, but that was reading too much flattery into the mix. Considering what had happened at the opening feast and all. Nothing then would have made her think she’d’ve gotten admirers. Curiosity, perhaps, but definitely not drooling. It seemed her mention of Rae had made the emotion in the room more serious, though, and her expression faltered a little. Not so much got completely serious, but at least less amused. It seemed grudges were as prevalent as admiration, really, when it came to herself. Even the amusing ones.
“You can relate to finding Hufflepuffs a handful?,” she asked, once it seemed the Rae moment had faded away a little. With the tiniest of flickers of her ability, she grinned a little as it seemed the handfuls were at least the same on one count. “It’s amazing what one little question can start, when certain Hufflepuffs decide to answer,” she added then, a bit cryptic. But it was true, as she remembered the Major Arcana battle of meanings between Jake and Treyen during her lesson. It was all entertaining, and at least they’d shown they both understood what they’d been talking about. Ravenclaws weren’t the only intelligent ones in the school anymore, if they ever had been. She’d always disbelieved that old saying.
She shrugged slightly as he lightly shot down her attempt at disproving the pet theory within the staff at Hogwarts, still smiling as she saw the half-smile of his that had accompanied the statement. “An opinion,” she replied, before laughing at his response to her manticore comment. “That’s always good to know.” Valuing life before exotic pets. The laughter only continued as he brought up dragons. “Slightly less dangerous. At least while small,” she said impishly. Fire hazard though, especially in their offices. And she imagined it hadn’t been attempted for eons anyway. She tilted her head slightly as he called her the creature police though, regarding him with eyes still sparkling with amusement until he asked about her rescue of Anastasia. “Anastasia? I happened to come across her abuser while looking for a Divination expert I’d been told about.” She shrugged. “I’ve never been good about animal mistreatment, so I took action.” At twenty years old, and the memory of the Russian’s face made a half-smile creep onto her face. Just because she wasn’t necessarily outwardly threatening didn’t mean she couldn’t make her point known if she wanted.
The smile only grew as he went on to address the idea of getting into her thoughts. “I guess I should thank you for that then,” she said, going back to the mischievousness. “I have to admit, I would have been interested if you’d tried.” What he’d go after, that sort of thing. It wasn’t necessarily an all or nothing thing, when it came down to it. But skill levels made a difference. And she wondered what was going through his head again at the renewed smile, until she abandoned that thought as he spoke again. “Like us coming in here to investigate the memories wouldn’t? What sort of rumors do you think would start anyway?” As far as she thought, professors visiting each other wasn’t that odd. But then, she hadn’t really tried it yet. “It’s just a simple attempt on my part. One professor helping another learn their subject,” she added with another grin. And the implied challenge for herself, with his self-professed failure to understand Divination.
“Perhaps,” she replied with another little grin, as he continued the circularness of things. Leaving things open-ended led to interpretation. And amusement. Not everyone understood that. Static conversations were, well, boring. She had a feeling they were alike in the dislike of that idea, which was why she was drawn to their conversations. Hopefully she’d find that in the other professors as well, or at least something similar.

"People in general?" Jared suggested, grinning at the question behind her question. It seemed Hogwarts, or perhaps schools in general, had a tradition of students tending to be attracted to teachers. He couldn't know for sure, never having taught before, at least not in an environment like the one here. Rigid, by certain standards.
"Indeed." He smiled lightly, not exactly sure what she had on her mind right then, though he could certainly have guessed it pertained to Hufflepuffs and their - for lack of a better term - 'antics' during her lessons. Her next comment confirmed this, and he found himself, once again, agreeing. Certain Hufflepuffs could blow a simple question completely out of proportion, and not in a bad manner, either. Though, he had to say, even though he could relate and, probably for that reason, understand her comment better than most others might have, the comment in question had been vague. "I'll let you be cryptic for now, mademoiselle," he said, his smile lingering for several moments. If that pleased her.
"Like yours," Jared returned, once again teasingly. His was an opinion, however. He couldn't call it a fact, having neither complete knowledge of all the staff's pets, nor any interest in acquiring the said knowledge. Dragons? "While very small," he said, the amusement he felt apparent in his tones. To be honest, he'd not risk something like that, keeping a dragon - a baby dragon - in his office, even if he felt sure he could manage one. The castle and its students provided too much of an unknown factor, too many elements he could not precisely predict.
Anastasia? Quite the name. Jared nodded, clearly interested. "I can see I should be careful around you, Renée," he said, her semi-smile making him give her a mock cautious look. Not that she might catch him mistreating an animal in actual. But yes, ladies can be scary. Jared could agree to as much, there and then. He had good reason to be scared of her. Or so, at least, his semi-teasing tones said.
Perhaps unconsciously, she almost made the talk of breaking into her mind sound like a challenge, and Jared contemplated that such an act could actually mean more enigma associated to her, given that he didn't think it was possible to get to know all about her, just by getting into her mind once, or even several times - should, of course, that ever happen by some unlikely chance. The thought added another layer to her personality, really. "Coming down here isn't that out-of-the-ordinary," he mused, as the conversation returned to the topics of rumours. The Divination Professor teaching the Charms Professors her subject, however, was. Out-of-the-ordinary. He doubted Hogwarts had had many professors that chose to teach each other their subjects, especially without any real necessity. Rumours? "All kinds, I suppose." Even conspiracy theories. Given the students and their tendency to over-analyze at times, anything seemed possible.

Perhaps? Ah. Jared grinned.
Jared’s response to her question about the Slytherins was met by a raised eyebrow from Renée. She could read the flattery into the whole comment, even with how simple and innocent the words were, but part of her wondered if he actually meant it. Some people might have just taken it all as a joke, with the grin and all. But they had too much between the lines in their conversations to take it all at face value. “Maybe,” she replied with a grin. “I’d like to think that. So far experience leaves it all under question.” She did have an idea that she’d won over some from other houses, but not in the matter of amusing crushes. No, that was still sticking with Slytherins in her case, to her knowledge. What made it all funnier is that it proved Hogwarts wasn’t really that different from her previous jobs. Generally, at least.
The Hufflepuff topic was amusing in an entirely different way, and she found herself watching as he agreed with her. “I can’t say I’d really expected that. Hufflepuffs being the trouble,” she replied lightly, shrugging a little. That wasn’t entirely true, as she’d expected a bit from Treyen. Not exactly what she’d gotten, but something nonetheless. She imagined the fact it had evidenced knowledge of the Tarot wasn’t actually surprising, given his dedication to Professor Reynolds, however. That tangent was interrupted when Jared had replied again, and she glanced at him with another laugh as he gave her permission to be cryptic. “Why thank you, monsieur,” she said with a light smile. “It’s not every day I’m given the freedom to be cryptic.” Even if it was just for a moment. The teasing came in when she considered permission was usually not necessary, and she had a feeling he knew that as well. Not to mention he was quite adept at the skill as well.
She gave him another bright grin as he referred to the opinions, though. “Of course.” Everyone had opinions. They made things interesting, as facts were so static. The topic of staff pets was certainly one filled with opinions, as even she knew the number in the castle remained in question. She’d been thinking about how she hadn’t spoken to many of the other professors earlier anyway, but she could be fairly certain none of them had contemplated pet dragons. That would be one pet that wouldn’t be overlooked, even in the castle grounds. “I’d imagine sticking to even less dangerous pets is a better idea.” As well as legal ones. Dragons didn’t exactly qualify there, either.
She’d caught the slightest of pauses when she’d instinctively said her phoenix’s name, but didn’t think much of it. Perhaps it was simply curiosity, and in fact she felt Anastasia’s name needed less explanation than Bowie’s. Her crup wasn’t in question, though, and the slightly mischievous look reappeared as he spoke. “I wouldn’t worry, unless you plan any nefariousness,” she replied, not figuring he did. At least he’d been warned, teasingly and indirectly. She imagined his skills would have given her more challenge than the Russian’s, though. Just by the very fact they were both here, teaching at Hogwarts. That entailed a certain skill set that the common wizard didn’t necessarily have. The fact her implied challenge regarding attempts at getting into her head gave her more to think about, as she knew enough about him to know he at least had to be wondering about the idea. That was her intent, and it was certainly amusing. Dangerous, as well, since she’d already told him her ability at blocking was lacking.
She shrugged again as he posed the idea that her being on the third floor wasn’t out of the ordinary, but grinned yet again as another thought came back to her. “No, it’s not. Especially as even this time I simply stopped here as a distraction from intending on searching out a snack after grading papers. However, us sneaking in here by ourselves could be seen as suspicious.” She had to point that out, as it seemed to have not been implied enough with the rumour topic. “I think we already know that to be true,” she added. The students here obviously had active imaginations. It was both promising and worrisome, at least when the idea of rumours about themselves came into play. So far they seemed clear, beyond the already discussed individual amusing conspiracy theories. And she had a feeling he was still trying to get out of her offer for Divination tutoring. It didn’t really matter, as they hardly needed reasons to speak. The very amusement of the paths their conversations always took meant the promise of continuation, as spiraling thoughts always piqued new ones.

He smiled at the raised eyebrow, a lighthearted sort of semi-smile. Had she taken the comment as more than harmless teasing? Not that he didn't consider her beautiful. But then, he had found out long ago [to, surprisingly, the disapproval of a good number of acquaintances] that he valued intelligence far more than looks, in people in general and in the company he tended to keep, in particular. He inclined his head, acknowledging her statement, before grinning at her comment about Hufflepuffs.
"Perhaps the times have changed," he said. Since she had attended Hogwarts. He doubted they had in general, however. The good and bad students, the trouble-making and non trouble-making, they'd always be there in all the houses, some remarkably more prominent than the others. It was just their luck that the more prominent ones they had to tackle, at least in the present and on certain fronts, belonged to Hufflepuff. Knowing that she did not, in actual, need his permission to be cryptic, his expression changed to a more amused one at her next comment, his look pretty much saying, I'm generous like that, aren't I now, mademoiselle?
They had come back to pets, and Jared found himself imagining, once again though for a brief moment, a baby dragon in his office. The thought actually appealed to him. He could get one and easily, never really having let go of his links to several Dragon Reservations. Even keep the students safe from it. Trouble was, who would keep the dragon safe from the students?
Nefariousness? "Renée." Jared's attempt at an injured look failed spectacularly. "You don't think I could." The look came off as a teasing grin more than anything else, really, though he had a feeling she'd be able to guess the look he had originally intended to give her. The glint of a name on a plaque caught his eye as he fell silent for the moment, and he took a small step forward to examine it. Ah. The one, or at least one of the several, that he had been looking for. He returned his attention to Renée as she spoke again, frowning ever so slightly for a second as she mentioned her intentions of searching out a snack. He had, of course, not known that.
"It seems I've unintentionally caused you to postpone that," Jared said. "We could move our conversation to the kitchen, if you'd like that."
As for the rumours, he doubted either of them could do much to stop them if they started. But they hadn't yet, and he'd hope they did not in the future either, even if he didn't believe something like that might deter him from letting her teach him Divination. Not being a rumour magnet is always a plus. Especially if people already think you're around to overthrow the Headmaster. It'd be a disaster, even if a humorous one, if someone decided Renée was an accomplice.
Hmm, move or just finish? :P (eventually we need new RP)

Not being a rumour magnet is always a plus. Especially if people already think you're around to overthrow the Headmaster. It'd be a disaster, even if a humorous one, if someone decided Renée was an accomplice.
The extended silence that sprung from her reaction to Jared’s obviously unintentional flattery, given his reaction to her own, could have worried some people. However, Renée was not one of them, and she merely chose to remain amused by the whole situation. Especially considering all their talk of rumours, and students getting ideas. And student crushes. All of those put together could equal quite the disaster, if she’d chosen to take the flattery as completely intentional and serious. Of course, if it stayed in here, it would all mean little anyway. Every once in a while she’d always wondered if the walls of the castle had eyes, though, and not just the typical gossip from the portraits. There didn’t seem to be many in here, luckily.
As the Hufflepuff topic gained a response, she smiled back. “Perhaps. I highly doubt they would have changed that much, though. If they had, sorting would have to change just the same.” The good old sorting hat and his songs. Those hadn’t changed, so she imagined the basic idea behind the sorted students hadn’t as well. Or at least hadn’t changed much. She’d wondered about her Ravenclaws occasionally. And at least it seemed she didn’t have to worry about him misinterpreting anything, not that the thought was really related to worry over Ravenclaws. The look on his face after her teasing comment regarding allowances for being cryptic simply distracted those thoughts, and she grinned. Odds were it wasn’t generosity behind it all, but the idea was entertaining. She was too good at being cryptic to adhere to rules about it, and she knew by now he was the same way. Trying to reign her in would be hypocrisy.
Glancing at him again as they fell into another bout of silence, a half-smile crept onto her face as she sensed he was honestly thinking about pet dragons. And the possibilities, but the smile grew more at the switch to saving the creature from the students. That was so true. She’d already had at least one moment of worry over Anastasia, when it came to notice from students. Bowie, less so, but then the crup was too energetic to worry about student handling. That was definitely more of a ‘worry about the students’ situation, not the other way around. His words, not to mention the spectacularly failed attempt at an injured look, only brought another laugh forward, however. “No, I don’t. But at least you can’t say you haven’t been warned,” she responded, trailing off as his attention shifted to a plaque. Craning her neck, inadvertently loosening another coil of hair from her haphazard feather pinning, she tried to peer at it herself, over his shoulder, curiosity mounting, but resigned herself to having to look later as he turned back to her. She could ask again, but she knew by now it would just lead to another diversion. And they already had one, in her comment about snacks.
She regarded him for a moment as he actually reacted to the revelation, then gave him another half-smile. “If it makes you feel any better, the distraction of this room postponed it before you could have,” she replied. So true, and in a way his arrival had merely provided more of a distraction. She hardly felt the need for sustenance anymore, but knew it was still necessary, and she gave him a slight shrug at the offer. “We could. If you like,” she said vaguely, before a mischievous grin broke out on her face again. “Professor Descoteaux, would you like to join me in a snack raid?” The facetiousness of the question was highly apparent, even as the intent was less so. She had thought about asking if he wanted to join her, after all. Before the ironic distraction of his appearance when she’d least expected.
They could disprove any rumours later, if any even surfaced. Even the students had to realize their professors needed to eat, so there was nothing behind this excursion. Part of her even thought the rumours could be oddly fascinating, as long as they didn’t help further the reputation she already had with one student. She imagined Jared had the same thoughts, regarding his own little conspiracy theorist.

She had a point, there. "The sorting hat certainly isn't going to run out of business anytime soon," Jared smiled. No matter how much times change, basic traits such as courage, intelligence, ambitiousness and loyalty don't. That said, even those basic traits could cover such a large number of different qualities and drawbacks. If all the Eagles had been book-smart, for instance, perhaps no one could have taken the House Cup from Ravenclaw. Even a single trait could, in the end, make itself apparent in dozens of different ways.
Variety and unpredictability. Fantastic, as a combination.
He inclined his head, acknowledging her statement about having warned him. She had done that, even if teasingly, almost indirectly. Jared couldn't imagine a situation, or even a potential situation, in which she might need to spell out that warning for real, but her comment still made him half-smile as his thoughts returned, for a brief moment, to the earlier almost challenge-like mentions of breaking into her mind. Did entering another person's mind sans permission count as nefariousness? Possibly.
Ah. It was good knowing he hadn't been the sole cause of the delay, really. He'd not have wanted to keep her from something like that. Especially if she had especially come down for that purpose. Snack raid? Jared grinned lazily. "It'd be an honour, my lady." He responded to the facetiousness in her manner in mock reverential tones, the kind a knight-in-shining-armour from a seventeen century story might have employed, when talking to a princess. "Please." His tones returning to their normal cadence, he motioned lightly for her to lead, though an amused spark lingered in his eyes and smile, both.
