| | The Runes Classroom
When there is not a lesson on, you are still more than welcome to make use of the Ancient Runes classroom, though abuse of the privilege will result in punishment and a locking of the door. The classroom is bright and airy, very clean and comfortable. There are no desks in this classroom, rather there are several wooden tables which would fit between four and six students quite comfortably. The tables are arranged rather higgledy piggledy, all out of alignment with each other and yet there is plenty of room to weave through the tables and walk up to the front of the classroom, or down to the back. Each table has runes carved into them, some a little straighter and clearer than others, and all stained with red. They seem to thrum encouragingly when you sit down to work, but do not provide any distraction; on the contrary you feel far more focused and confident about learning when you sit at these tables and surround yourself in the runes carved by the students and by the professor.
The front of the classroom has a large blackboard, charmed to write on itself, and when it isn't taking notes it quite often it has something to say, though you'll need to transcribe it from runic to English to make any sense of it. Truebridge also has a desk at the front of the class, set to one side, and a perfect view of all the tables arranged haphazardly around the room.
At the back of the classroom, set to one side, there is the door out into the corridor. Along the back wall there is a large bookshelf almost overflowing with books, mostly old, all very well taken care of. You're welcome to look at any of these books but if any harm befalls the tomes, there will be a severe price to pay. A long and comfortable couch takes up the rest of the back wall, and this is a good place to curl up and read or work on some of your homework.
The windows along the remaining side, opposite the door and Truebridge's desk have soft white curtains that are almost transparent. When pulled they simply diffuse the light and ensure it is not too bright, allowing the room to stay bright and lit at all times. The window frames are the most interesting, if you go and inspect them, all of the exposed wood has been painstakingly carved with runes, mostly bindrunes and rune charms, set in ligature and carved then stained red. These have all been activated and almost thrum under your fingertips. No cold will pass these windows, no student will fall to their deaths. It is a barrier of safety and of comfort, and a good example of runic magic. The door into the classroom is similarly marked.
Keep your voices down, Truebridge's office is right across the corridor. ooc: feel free to create your own roleplays in this thread but beware that Truebridge is likely to show up at any given moment, so I wouldn't do anything that he'd likely punish your characters for... unless thats what you want to happen. Anyone who wants to study more or learn more about Runes can come here too, I'll send Truebridge in to help out, just indicate you want to talk to the professor in the title of your post. |

Jake had been searching for a place to escape to for some time. Everywhere he went he felt trapped, and even though he was on his way to Truebridge's office he knew that no matter where he went it would be the same.
Nevertheless, he wanted somewhere quiet and alone. He wore sunglasses but over the top of his usual glasses, being to lazy to put his contacts in.
Instead of knocking on Truebridge's door, however, Jake found that another door caught his eye, and why not? It was the usual classroom... and maybe it was empty. Jake pushed on the wood and turned the handle, to find the familiar class just as it was in the last lesson. He smiled and entered; if it was open, there was no problem with him entering, right?
Immediately, Jake took off his sunglasses and went straight for the bookshelf he knew was at the back. The young man WANTED to look at one of these, since he sooooooo trusted Truebridge's literature choice... but he already had a book with him. Jake made sure the classroom door was shut before going up to sit at Truebridge's desk.
Sitting at the desk with a perfect view of the room and the door, Jake smiled to himself. It wasn't perfect, it wasn't home... but it would do. The boy cracked open his book. It was on the scariest subject known to him... People.

Emily walked into the room, humming to herself.
She stopped as soon as she entered. Where was she?
Great, she was always getting lost! What floor was she even on?
She looked around and saw and older Hufflepuff boy reading at the table. Why was it Emily always became nervous around older people?
She didn't even know what room she was in.
Luckily... Yes a bookshelf!
Trying to look like she had ment to come in here, she walked to the back of the class and pulled out a book. 'Ancient Runes book? Must be and Ancient Runes classroom.' she thought
She hadn't done too well in the ancient runes lesson so she sat down and also started to read.
She hoped the older student woudn't mind. She would just sit here quietly, and read and chew some gum... dang she didn't have any. Guess, she would just sit and read then...

As the door opened, Jake, from Truebridge's desk, peered over his book and saw a younger girl. He was on a chapter in his book about the psychological different between stereotypical males and females and he was so confused.
So... he'd take a break from that for a few moments.
Watching the girl read for a small amount of time, Jake found himself talking.
That tended to happen.
"What book are you reading?" It was always about books. Jake LOVED books now that he didn't have as much difficulty. Granted, the letters and words still mixed themselves up but it was easier than before.

Emily looked up to see the older boy looking at her. It was her right?
It had to be, there was no one else here. "Uh... Ancient Runes Made Easy" she said cautiously "I found the lesson quite hard, so I'm just looking them up. What about you?"
Mabye the boy shared her love of reading. Then mabye she could talk to him. If not, she'd probably just sink into the floor with embarrassment.
Well if she did, at least she woudn't have to do any more ancient runes!

Well if she did, at least she woudn't have to do any more ancient runes! Jake nodded at the book; he was quite familiar with it.
When she asked about what Jake was reading the young man looked down at his own book and shrugged. "A book about people," he shrugged, putting it into the back he'd brought and pulling out another. "I think I'll get started on this one, though," Jake added, holding up the new book. What Every Body Is Saying.
Thinking back to what the girl had said about the lesson, Jake was quiet for a moment. "What did you have trouble with? Maybe I can help."
He'd like to. Jake wanted to show that just because he was big and slightly imposing now and used to be kind of rubbish with school, that he wasn't like that. He had a brain. "I got an O on my OWL," the young man added, as though to persuade her.

She was slightly confused, but grateful all the same. "I just don't understand what some of the runes mean... and why they're so important..." If you want people to like you mabye you should stop acting like an idiot and introduce yourself, Emily told herself "I'm Emily by the way. And an O? Wow, my sister didn't get any O's. Just E's" Great, talk about family. That'll really interest them!
Great, now she was talking to herself inside her head! Not wierd at all!

Great, now she was talking to herself inside her head! Not wierd at all! Jake gave a single nod before getting up from the desk of Truebs and going to sit by the girl. It was easier than talking across the room.
"I got eleven O grades. And one E," Jake went on, since they were talking about grades and all.
"Okay, so... the runes. Truebridge teaches us the Futhark runes, of course, and that's the textbook we have. They're important because, as many people believe, even muggles in fact, that they are magic in its purest form. Like... natural, you know? They have their own meanings and when they're carved properly, they give off energy appropriate to the rune."
It really was a confusing topic... and Jake was worried that he was getting it wrong... he was quite confident though.
"Thousands of years back, people started to use them to tell stories and stuff. We can also translate them into letters in the alphabet, you see. Have you ever heard of The Tales of Beadle the Bard?"
As for the meanings... "Is it that there are specific runes you have trouble with the meanings? The topic can be confusing if you let it. And a lot of people do."
Was he forgetting something?
Oh yeah.
"I'm Jake, by the way." Probably should have introduced himself when she had.

"I'm Jake, by the way." Probably should have introduced himself when she had. Emily smiled as he came and sat next to her. Hopefully she woudn't act to stupid or nosey. She had a habit of doing that around older people. "What was the E in?" she asked. Wow, what did she just decide not to do?!?!
Emily sat and nodded slightly as Jake talked. "So each rune has a different meaning and gives off that particular energy. Like... Thurisaz means thorn, and is supposed to help you focus?"
Wait, had she just skipped ahead? Anyway... "The tales of Beadle the Bard? Is it a book written in ancient runes?"
That would be cool! Like a secret letter... except in book form...
As for specific runes, "Do you have to learn the meaning of every rune for class? Just 'cause there's 24 of them and I don't think my brain has enough room for them all." she smiled anyway. "Yeah, it does sound confusing"
He made it sound a lot easier out loud, rather than in text book form. There's something she never though she'd say! "And Hi Jake" she added once Jake introduced himself.

He made it sound a lot easier out loud, rather than in text book form. There's something she never though she'd say! "And Hi Jake" she added once Jake introduced himself. "Transfiguration," Jake replied, Summoning his textbook from where he'd been sitting earlier and flipping through it. "I'm aiming for twelve Os this year. It's my NEWT year," he added, just in case she didn't know.
And she probably didn't... since he didn't mention it earlier.
On to the runes!
Wait, what? "Thorn?" Jake repeated, and found the right page. "Ah, no. The whole 'thorn' thing is about the sound it makes when you translate it, okay? So Thurisaz makes a 'th' sound, like in 'thorn'... that's all that means. For the meanings, you gotta look at chapter five."
Jake flipped back to the last chapter and gave Emily a smile. "So Thurisaz is what it says here, kind of like you said: focus, discipline, conflict, a painful event, yada yada yada. "As for remembering the meanings, I wouldn't worry about that too much. I like to try and remember them. The brain does have an unlimited capacity."
But she didn't have to worry. Nope. She seemed... quite young. She'd pick up on it.
"Beedle the Bard was all written in runes, yeah. Originally. But anyway, is this making any sense to you?"

"Beedle the Bard was all written in runes, yeah. Originally. But anyway, is this making any sense to you?" "Oh your in seventh year?" wow, she was amazed she was even in the same room as him, let alone talking to him. Why did older students make her nervous? At least this student was a nice one!
Thorn is the sound it makes? What? Was she saying it's name right? "Oh ok..." she said looking confused but nodded anyway. "Yeah. I may look confused, but I look like this all the time. So don't let it fool you" she laughed "Your much better at explaining it than the books..."
Hopefully he'd take that as a compliment. "Ancient runes seems to be my worse lesson. I hate it when I don't understand something and everyone else does. It makes me feel a bit stupid, if you know what I mean..."
Probably not, but she coudn't get worse, right?

Probably not, but she coudn't get worse, right? "The rune meanings and the translations to the latin alphabet are completely different. That's quite important to remember," Jake pointed out. "When we're taking about meanings, focus on chapter five. Chapter six will help you on how to say it... look... thoor-ee-saws."
Leaning back slightly in his chair, Jake gave the younger girl a friendly smile. "Thank you. One day I hope to teach at a wizarding school, maybe at WADA, so I'm glad I'm not totally confusing you."
He nodded in understanding at Emily's words. "I'm like that with Divination, probably because I'm only really there for the grade... I believe in prophecies and that's the extent of it. What year are you in, anyway? You look quite young... I promise you that you'll pick up on it all super quickly. Truebridge is an amazing teacher."

Emily had always liked to work, but if they had to translate something, she was gonna need help! "Oh you'd make a great teacher!" Emily smiled at him "And what's WADA? I don't know much about other wizarding schools"
Her family tree barley left England. She would love to explore the world! Mabye that's why she was so interested in Dragons? "Yeah, the teachers seem great! And really helpful and fun... well most of them..." she had a feeling Jake would know what teacher she was talking about. Everyone seemed too. "And I'm a first year gryffindor..." she had felt a need to say her house "And I know I'm a first year, so I still have loads to learn, but my mam and sister were both super talented witches, so I feel like there's a lot of pressure on me to be great at everything! That's why I read so much..." Great, she had gone back to being nervous as she had started rambling and telling this poor boy her life story. She was great at first impressions!

"It depends on what Truebridge decides, to be honest. We'll be learning anything in the book, I guess," Jake shrugged. If he knew what they'd be learning, he'd have it all learnt already, in advance.
"WADA stands for Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts. My father went there, and I think Truebridge there. Either way, kids gotta learn the regular things as well as the arts in that place," Jake smiled wryly. He had in fact wanted to attend that school for his last year... but came back to Hogwarts for some bizarre reason. So now he was having to practice his music every evening, singing when nobody was around.
He listened when she spoke, which was more than could be said about other people in conversations. Giving an understanding nod, Jake went on. "Lafay? She hates me. Honestly, I know what you mean about not everyone being understanding. A lot of them, though... yeah. They're awesome."
Jake smiled again as he flipped through the textbook just to peruse. "Oh, I know about pressure. My original family, they were Slytherins and my first father wasn't in my life, so I had this pressure to get into Slytherin. I thought I was going to burst into tears when I made it to Hufflepuff. But I got a new, much more supportive family. Honestly, pressures about school are stupid. As long as you are the best that YOU can be, things will turn out great for you."
He'd probably confused her with talk of his families and stuff like that, but he didn't really notice. It made sense to him, so of course he wouldn't think about how it appeared to someone. Plus, the way things were going, he was probably going to get an even more messed up family now.
Ugh.

Ugh. "Wizarding Academy of Dramatic Arts? That sounds so wicked! Although my sister's always been more of the 'dramatic' one. Though she'd probably say the same for me!" she smiled to herself and made a mental note to actually write to her sister some time! "The dragon la- Lafay seems really scary." she said stopping far to late at saying her nickname, it really was catchy "I'm just hopeing to survive her class, let alone pass it!"
Emily was a little confused. Had he had more than one family? If so, did he want to talk about it? Ah, pressure again! "Well, my mam was in Ravenclaw and my sister in Gryffindor, so I wasn't really under any pressure for houses..." No, she had to ask him. Why are you so nosey?!?! "So you've had different families?" she said, choosing her words carefully "Sorry to be nosey, and you don't have to tell me anything. It's just... if you want to talk, I've been told I'm a great listener!"
She had such big ears as well as a big mouth! Lucky her! "Although you might be embarressed talking to a first-year. Anyway, just forget I said anything..."
Now she was the embarressed one! What was she thinking? She wasn't, that was the whole point!
Looking for a change of subject she looked around the room. "Are we even supposed to be in here?" she had just realised she was in a classroom. What floor was she on again?

Drama drama drama. You were never short of it in this place.
When it came to his family, the corners of Jake's mouth twitched into a smile. "It's fine. I wouldn't have mentioned it if it was like, taboo or something," he pointed out, and then looked thoughtful before speaking. "My biological parents were about nineteen when I was born. My dad didn't stick around longer than three weeks, as was his nature, and my mother didn't really like me. I was a reminder of the life she couldn't have. I left her house when I was ten, and after my first year I lived with my dad for a few weeks. But he... had loads more kids. Couldn't deal with me."
Remembering what came next, Jake smiled oddly. "I was in a lot of foster families, and finally I was placed with someone who I liked. She got married and they adopted me. They actually used to teach here."
So yeah... that was about it. "They divorced recently, though."
Jake wasn't good at realising when he was bringing the mood down.
The room? Oh. "Well, the door was open. I'm sure Truebridge wouldn't leave it open if it wasn't meant to be used."

The room? Oh. "Well, the door was open. I'm sure Truebridge wouldn't leave it open if it wasn't meant to be used." Aw! Family was always a touchy subject. She had found this out rather quickly when making friends. "Oh, sorry..." she said, although Jake didn't seem too sad. Although, he was a lot older, so he's probably learned to deal with it by now. "Well, can I tell you something I've never told anyone else?" She wasn't! "My sister is actually my half-sister. Her dad left my mam because he thought she was a freak just because she's a witch." Yep, she just had! Well she'd have to talk about it sooner or later. "Only, my family don't know I know that. I overheard them talking one day..."
The mood was officaially down... "So we won't get in trouble if the professor comes in here?"
They'd better not, Jake was just helping her with work! If anything, he should get points for helping! Actually, they should really get back to that...

It was Ava's fault.
And Marie.
Hmmm? Oh... confiding. Jake could handle that. "I see," Jake nodded. Wellll... "I don't have any full siblings. I have a step-sister and a step-brother that my biological father adopted when he married their mother, and then there's Dale, my little half-brother, and the twins, who are my half-brothers, I think... oh, and Daniel, oldest half-brother. In my new family there's Ava. She's the real daughter, so... I don't know... I never liked her. Because she's my mum and dad's real kid, and I'm just the one they adopted."
Why was he going into this? It was just depressing.
"Families are completely diverse. There's secrets and lies in every single one. You'll never find the perfect family."
Uh. Yeah. Enough of that.
"Anyway. Runes. Was there anything else you didn't get in the lesson? Like the carving and the galdr and stuff?"

"No I think I understand everything else. The galdr is the chant we had to... chant to get the power of the rune into the wood, right?"
Or something along those lines. Power probably wasn't the right word. Oh well... "Oh. Just one more question!" This had been bugging her for ages. "Has Arithmancy got something to do with numbers?" Yep, she was getting dumber by the minute.
Numbers, family... uh!

Numbers, family... uh! "Yeah, as we were carving them manually. It, like... assists with putting the magic into them, I guess."
Jake thought it was super cool if you asked him. Not using a wand to make pure magic and all. Like if he was ever trapped in a box, had a carving tool and remembered the right galdr, he could... make himself feel more comfortable? Like the room felt. Yes.
Ah, Arithmancy. "Yeeees..." Jake said slowly. "But it's not really maths. There's a little adding, but it's dead simple. There are numbers, though... yeah. But it's finding the meaning of the number about certain things with you and stuff. It's pretty cool. Not as hard as people think."

Anything that envolved numbers was hard in Emily's opinion.
She looked at her watch. Woah, it was getting late! "Well I'd better be going back to my common room" she said standing up, and putting the book she had took back on it's shelf. Ah books! "Thanks for you help and, well... everything!" she smiled at him.
Mabye older people wern't meant to be feared. They could eve come in useful! "Thanks!" she said again "I'll see ya around Jake."
Should she shake his hand, or..? No, Emily was not one for personal offection, and Jake didn't look like one either. "Bye" she gave him one last smile.
Mabye Hogwarts was going to be better than expected! But first, the library! To get some books on ancient runes... and dragons!

Mabye Hogwarts was going to be better than expected! But first, the library! To get some books on ancient runes... and dragons! Placing his textbook back into his bag as Emily put the stuff back, Jake stood up as well. "Bye," he responded, going back to Truebridge's desk and sitting in his seat.
Without even realising, as he started to read, Jake put his feet up on the edge of the desk.
It was a habit he'd picked up from his father, no doubt.

Helena was wandering around the fifth floor (how did she end up there, anyway?) and found herself entering the Ancient Runes classroom. "Hello... definitely not professor Truebridge," she said, smiling to the boy sitting at the teacher's desk.
She walked towards the bookshelves and scanned every single book. She liked the runes, so she wanted to learn more about them. She took Magical Hieroglyphs and Logograms and let herself fall on the couch.

Funny how they seemed to be drawn to this classroom, almost as if the book-loving energy of Truebridge was emitted from this place.
Or, you know, not.

Or, you know, not. " I was just looking for some extra reading," said Helena, suddenly looking up from her book when she heard his voice. " I really enjoyed the first Runes lesson." Okay, now why am I telling him this? she thought. He probably doesn't care.
" What are you reading?" she asked, smiling. " And I hope I'm not too annoying. I talk too much," she said as she leaned her head down, feeling her cheeks turn red.
