Default Observatory

The Milky Way Galaxy contains anywhere between 200 and 400 billion stars. A tiny fraction of those can be viewed right here, in the Hogwarts Observatory. This circular room was locked for a long time, but Professor Antares opened it again two terms ago - complete with a huge telescope that was a new addition then. As it is difficult to operate, students need permission from the professor before they are allowed to use it, but a number of smaller telescopes that anyone and everyone is free to use are stowed away in cupboards lining the rounded walls along with empty potion vials and other astronomy items.

Large star charts are pinned up on the walls as well. Not all of these belong to the school. Those that do not have a great number of notes and calculations added to them - although Professor Antares is first and foremost a teacher now, he is still able to supply colleagues with data and measurements. You are, of course, free to study his charts, but make very sure not to remove or misplace anything.

Stargazing, naturally, is an activity best pursued at night, and as such, the Observatory usually remains unlocked. Of course, there are superseding school rules that limit the hour at which students can still be out of bed. If you desire to study the wonders of the cosmos later than that, you need a note from Professor Antares. Should a student be found without such a note (or, alternatively, a creative excuse), he or she can expect... trouble.

In the same way that a library is more than just a building where books are stored, the Observatory is as much a place of scientific inquiry as it is a shrine to the grandeur and beauty of the Universe. Professor Antares, when he doesn't use the telescope for work, often comes here to think to himself, or for some peace and quiet. Please respect him and any other teacher or student spending his or her time here in this way by not running around or shouting.

Who needs a telescope when you had the wide open sky in full view right there?

Taking a quick peak at the telescope, she shook her head before turning her gaze up to the open sky. Hmm, how can one do homework on a night like this? This should be illegal. Actually, now that she thought of it, this technically wasn't homework but extra credit work. They didn't really have to do this. But extra credit would be nice.

Hearing something move, the Slytherin girl finally blinked and turned her head towards Josh. Hmm, he found one? Taking a quick look at his parchment she smiled and turned to her own, just about to write down what he wrote but...huh. When did THAT get there?

Blinking, she scratched out the words before adding underneath. No one saw that! At least, she hoped not. O_O

11:13 pm - Leo Constellation
11:30 pm - Lupus Constellation
Josh Constellation ♥
11:50 pm - Hercules Constellation

Hmmm. Hercules Constellation was interesting. Josh wondered why there was such a constellation though. ''Did those ancient people who studied Astronomy like Ancient Egyptians named constellations after heros?'' he asked looking up from his notes. ''If they did i want one for myself too.'' Hehehe. But Hercules was in the Greek Mythology so it could not be Ancient Egyptians who named that one. He did not know Ancient Greek people studied Astronomy though. Well apparently they did since all the names seemed to be in Latin.

But why was it there? Opening the text book the Gryffindor boy searched information about that Hercules Constellation ''Do you know anything about Hercules, Rose?'' Maybe the she-snake knew why his name was there since the boy could not see anything related to it in the index of his textbook. So closing it quickly, he put the book away to get observing through the telescope again yet when his eyes spotted four lines on Evelyn's notebook instead of three, he stopped and tried to read it but... Had not they found three constellations yet? ''What is that third one?'' he asked looking curious ''That one you have killed?'' Maybe she accidentally had spelled the name wrong and had scratched it.

Maybe...

Smiling at the girl again for no reason at all, he looked up and gazed at the shiny stars without the telescope's help this time. Shouldn't there be a serpent constellation too? It would be nice for Evelyn if he found a Slytherin constellation so a little bit leaning back, his dark eyes searched the group of stars which looked like a snake. And as he did so, he started to mumble a slow song...

"Oh telescope, why couldn't you be lighter?" As the brunette entered over the observatory threshold she stopped to regain her breath.

Rejuvenated Sophie carried her telescope over to what she deemed to be a good spot. Extracting her textbook, notebook, quill and ink from her backpack the prefect placed them at her feet. Sticking her eye to the telescope she surveyed the night sky. One of the constellations looked very much like a dragon in appearance. Pulling some strands of hair out of her eyes she fetched her textbook and search through the spring constellations. Out loud she said to herself "Can that constellation be Draco?"
Arriving with a picnic basket, full of food provided by the elves, that all seemed to absolutely love Patroclus, the other Lion Prefect spotted his female countapart sitting over by one of the large open arches.

Before he had time to even say 'hello' Sophie seemed to have already spotted a contellation for them to investigate!
"Hello to you too!" he laughed as he dropped the basket down, and put down his telescope bag.
"I brought us up some dinner, so that we wont have to head all the way down to the Great Hall!" There were at the highest point in the school, why would they want to walk all the way back down. "There's sandwichs, cakes, juice, salad, and I think an elf may have added toothpicks." Clever little creatures!

"OK, so Draco you said?"

Quickly unpacking his telescope, opening out its legs, ensuring all the tightening screws were in the correct positions and firmly wound, Patroclus looked at Sophies telescope and copied the co-ordinates that see had. Putting his eye to the lens he had his breath taken away by the sheer number of stars that they could see, "Wow!"

Focusing his mind onto the task, and his attention of the collections of stars, Patroclus was able to discern the reptilian shape from amongst all the lights! "Aww I see it, yes definately Draco!"

Pulling out a piece of parchemnt the LionBoy quickly jotted down a heading and then began to list the Constellation, "so the time is 9:38pm", then he had a funny thought, "Don't let anyone see that the first stars we saw were ones of a Snake Dragon, every one will think we have swapped houses!"

Nika ran up to the tower for the second night this week. She held her telescope in hand and again put it down as fast as she could. Her stomach let out a big lurch and Nika suddenly regretted that last treacle tart that she ate. Nika rubbed her stomach as she looked for somewhere to sit. Nika put her permission slip on the table and looked through the telescope. She kept one eye closed as she looked through it with the other. Unlike the first time Nika had some trouble finding a constellation that she recognized easily. She took the book that she had gotten from the library out of her bag and flipped through the pages. One constellation from the book seemed to catch her eye. Nika read through the page and found what she was looking for at last. "Aha!"

Quote:
To find the Leo constellation look just south of the pointer stars in the Big Dipper.
Nika smiled widely because the book had just helped her a lot. Although it wasn't very specific Nika knew where the Big Dipper would be. She put her eye against the telescope again and searched the night sky for Leo. She found the Big Dipper and looked just south of it. "OH there it is! There it is!!" Nika almost jumped out of her seat with excitement, but remember that she was near a fragile object. Nika quickly looked at Leo once more before turning back to her book and her notebook.

SPOILER!!: Notebook

Journal Entry #2

Tonight I see Leo. I found this combination by looking just south of the pointer stars of the Big Dipper. I read that Leo is best seen in the spring. The Leo constellation has one star that is brighter than all of the rest. It is called Regulus. The sky is full of stars tonight and they are really easy to see.
That's it for tonight professor! Bye! Enjoy the rest of the night.

Nika smiled and closed her notebook. She giggled at the thought of the little message she wrote to her professor at the bottom. Maybe it would cheer her up. It must be awful to have to go through millions, okay not millions, of journal entries that she probably didn't even care about. She was the arithmancy teacher after all. Nika packed her things up into her bag and clutched onto the telescope. She started to yawn and that's when she realized how tired she really was. Nika head out of the room and made her way to the dormitories.

Once again, Helena climbed up the stairs to the observatory, this time having professor Hadley's permission as well. It was still early, dark outside, but early, buuut she'll have a lot of work to do. Still three constellations to look for.

She'll also have to wait for Caroline, as this was professor Hadley's request. To bring a friend with her. The girl took her telescope and looked around at random stars, until Caroline will show up.

That was a good question. She didn't really study astronomy all that much to certainly know, but she could give a good enough guess. "I suppose so." She muttered, continuing to slooooowly cross out the third line in her notes. It was pretty much a black blob there by now, but she had to be sure. Smiling at his last comment, she giggled quietly before growing silent for a few seconds. "I mean, heroes were really big in those days, right? If you were a hero, you were like a god. And gods are supposed to be immortal…" Right? Or something. "It'd be no wonder you'd have some design in the night sky named after you so you can live on forever."

Looking back up to the sky, her gaze traced the stars, looking for any other constellations. They should just like...pop out or something so they were easier to find. What was that big star right there anyway?

Did she know anything about Hercules? "Not much." she said truthfully, turning her head to look at the Gryffindor instead. "Just that he was really...really really strong, and all the ladies loved him." Hehe, she had noooo idea if that last part was true, but she knew he was famous for his strength. Giggling quietly, Evelyn glanced down to her notebook, staring at the blacked out words when he asked about them. Oh. "Oh, it's nothing." she muttered, shrugging her shoulders lightly. "Just misspelled a word."

Mmhmm. Not complete a lie. She misspelled Hercules. And it ended up looking like Josh...with a heart at the end. NO BIGGY! To distract herself, the Slytherin turned her attention back to the stars, searching for ANYTHING that could be a constellation.

''Right!'' What she had said, indeed, made sense. Heros should have been immortal and always remembered like forever as Hercules seemed to be. Plus if they had not named constellations after such interesting and worty names of heros, what would they name them after then? Fruits? Pineapple Constellation. And actually a Strawberry Constellation would be fine. Laughing at the part of the girl's words about himself, he nodded in agreement and turned back to face her. Seriously. He deserved a constellation named after him even now because he had been after a very hard quest which was not completed yet, like all heroes did. His quest was even way harder than Hercules' second one: Killing the highly poisonous nine-headed Hydra which repeatedly sprouted two more heads for each head cut off. And this quest of him was getting Evelyn ROSE Flores Shepard back as his girlfriend. Yes, that was way harder to manage with the Slytherin's stubbornness and broken heart which previously had caused by the hero himself. Pfff. ''Now i started to wonder how it'd be like if we, you and me, lived during those ancient days.''

Hercules was really strong and all ladies loved him. ALL ladies loved him? ''All ladies? Now, that's unfair'' Josh said with a playful smile. ''Seriously unfair...and i know he had twelve very hard quests to deal with.'' Hercules would surely have been a Gryffindor if he lived now. Hehehe. Anyway. He had to observe stars now and he turned back to the dark sky to do it so though observing Evelyn instead felt really attractive. Hmmm. He could see another group of stars, a constellation maybe, but he had no idea which constellation it was. It did not look like the Serpent. C'mon stars! He needed to find the Serpent! Show it now! Show it now!

As he checked his watch to see what the time was now, as maybe the Serpert had a certain hour to show itself, the lion boy nodded again when she said she had misspelled a word. Right. Just as he had guessed. And he just ignored the fact that what she had done on it seemed a little bit of an overreaction to a simple misspelling. ''Oh! Look at that huge star!'' in a sudden the boy exclaimed pointing at a certain spot up at the sky. ''It has a reddish glint on it! Awesome!'' and looking all excited he eyed the girl back before picking up his quill to add words to his notes. ''Very similar to you. You both have red on you which looks very cool and both are shiny and beautiful'' YAY! ''I, hereby, name this and the five other little stars around it as Evelyn-Rose Constellation!''

Hearing footsteps coming up the staircase Sophie turned her head around to see her co-prefect and friend Patroclus enter the observatroy. Finally he was here! The two lions had decided to partner up for Professor Hadley's extra credit assignment when it was announced on the common room bulletin board. Beaming the brunette said "Afternoon, Patroclus! I see you've brought food with you. Good thinking. Then we don't have to go down to dinner if we aren't finished by then."

Flipping through her textbook Sophie figured that she had made the right assumption when no other constellation looked like a dragon shape. Patroclus confirmed her thoughts when he looked through his telescope lens after adjusting the scope after her co-ordinates and said it was Draco. "One constellation down, 4 to go."

Taking a parchment the prefect noted the time and then jotted down some information about the constellation.

SPOILER!!: Sophie's parchment

Time: 9:39pm
Constellation: Draco
Extra: Is found in the spring month, visible all nights on northern latitudes.
Characteristics: The constellation is circumpolar and looks like a drawing of a dragon.
One myth of many:
Roman myth calls this dragon Ladon and he guarded the golden apples on a tree in a garden tended by the Hesperides, the daughters of Atlas. Hercules was sent to obtain the apples while under pledge to Eurystheus. He learned from Nereus that he could not pluck the apples himself, but must get help from Atlas. Hercules shot and killed Ladon with an arrow, making way for Atlas to enter and pluck the golden apples. The goddess Hera was greatly distressed by the death of Ladon and placed the dragon in the heavens.

Rising to her feet Sophie giggled "I won't tell but nobody would think we would have changed houses. What constellation do you want to find next, Leo?" Sticking her eye to the telescope lens the brunette started her search for a new constellation.

Bagel Bites Perpetually kept by Erin

And he's back.

He just had to empty his bladder, you know, and not so surprisingly, he did take a little long since the bathroom wasn't very near the Observatory. Cedric, his bag on his shoulder, hand carefully holding his telescope, tottered toward his 'perfect spot'. He held his telescope aloft, ready to take a look to the vast, star-dappled sky. Unless one didn't notice, his embarrassing worry about lurking creatures in the dark had, if not eliminated, subsided. It was his first time to go to the observatory this late at night, and that could sufficiently explain his worry.

A sudden rush of air blew in his direction, and he felt his body slightly shudder. He should have brought a sweater. So much for wishful thinking it wouldn't be quite windy.

Cedric looked through his telescope, and again, before his eyes, as was expected, was the stars gracing the skies.

After a considerable amount of time, Cedric had got lots to write about the stars and sightings he just beheld. He took his quill and parchment and start scribbling...

Quote:
The Cassiopeia constellation is still visible. But now that I look at it, its W shape seemed to shift to M shape. I conclude, even though this conclusion is premature as you might say, that the shape of the Cassiopeia constellation depends on our orientation and viewpoint. Anyway, the Cassiopeia stars has brought some companions tonight which I find surprising and enthralling (or could it be that I did not just recognize them before? Probably). There, in the said constellation's south side, was the Andromeda constellation. Its shape is pretty intricate, bearing a somewhat contorted V shape.

Default Astronomy Extra Credit Assignment Post #1
½ EagleBrain ♥ Creeperdoodle ♥ Raven Dor ♥ Berry ♥ ½ Team House Elf

Emily walked up to the Observatory at the top of the Astronomy tower, it was late at night, but she had permission from Professor Hadley for being out of bed after curfew, she was going to start working on her Astronomy Extra Credit Assignment.

Even though it was spring, the night air was cold and bitey. Emily pulled her robes around her tighter and adgusted her scarf so that it hugged her neck more.

Once she found herself a spot she put down her bag and went to retrieve the telescope she had cleaned in the first Astronomy lesson. She found it easily- labelled with her name. Thinking back to when she first saw the telescope it had been incredibly dusty and dirty and now... well now it looked brand new. Hopefully it would work just as nicely.

Emily set up the telescope at the spot where she had left her bag. Finding a stool to sit on Emily searched through her bag for her notebook and quill. Ensuring it was titled, Emily then turned her attention to the night sky. There were so many stars like little lights across the sky. She had always considered stars to be the lights of heaven.... they were after all heavenly beautiful.

Consulting a star map Emily searched the night sky in search of constellations.

After a few minutes Emily came across...
"Hydra", she said to herself, admiring the sluster of stars.
She gazed at the constellations for another minute then returned her attention to her notebook and took up her quill. She consulted her text book for more information.

She then sketched the constellation.

SPOILER!!: Emily's Notebook

Astronomy Extra Credit Assignment
Constellations

21 March

11:49
Hydra: is the largest of the 88 constellations, was named Hydra by the greeks but was also known as the Serpent during the Babylonian period. Both Hydra and the Serpent are depicted with a Raven- also Corvus the constellation- sitting at the end of its tail.
The brightest star of the Hydra constellation- also the backbone of the Hydra serpent- is Alphard.

After finishing her sketch Emily consulted her text book once again.... so Corvus- the Raven sat on Hydra's tail. Corvus was a seperate constellation.

Emily looked down the barrel of the telescope at the magnificent night sky. Indeed there he was... "Corvus... pretty Raven".... though really it didn't look like a raven at all... it looked more like... a wonky rectangle. But being a Ravenclaw, Emily felt some sort of allegience to the constellation.

She added more notes to her notebook.

SPOILER!!: Emily's Notebook

12:15
Corvus:
is the latin name for Raven or Crow, and was one of the forty-eight constellations named by Ptolemy. Though once considered to be composed of seven stars it is infact composed of eleven.
Gienah, also known as Gamma Corvi, is the brightest star in the Corvus constellation.

Buuut enough about that. They had constellations to find. "Shall we?" She asked, facing again the telescope.

The girl looked at the still clear sky, but nothing. She looked again and again in her textbook, then a thought ran through her mind. "Oh, I forgot to tell you, professor Hadley said you don't need her permission to be here late if you're with me." You know, just in case she wanted to know that she's not going to get in trouble.

Smiling once again, Helena scanned again the sky, until... "I found Lyra!" She suddenly said, rather cheerfully. But she checked her textbook, just to be sure. And she was right.

Emily continued to look through her telescope for some time until she saw the distinctive X chromosome shape of Lupus...
"Lupus... the wolf", Emily muttered to herself- as she did whenever she came across a constellation she knew. They hadn't discussed Lupus in class, b ut still she thought it was important to include. Checking the time, Emily added more notes to her notebook- taking a seat on her stool as she did so.

SPOILER!!: Emily's Notebook

12:40
Lupus:
Latin for wolf, lies between Centaurus and Scorpius. Lupus was one fo the forty-eight constellations identified by Astronomer Ptolemy. Lupus contains no particularly bright stars- the brightest of these is the star named Men. Because of its proximity to Centaurus, it was once belived that Lupus was the prey of Centaurus, based on the name Therion which was given to the constellation by Hipparchus of Bithynia, it was considered to be a beast. A non-descript animal which has/would fall prey to Centaurus. Then Ptolemy's name- Lupus was translated, and from then on he was known as the wolf.

After making a quick sketch of Lupus, Emily searched through her bag, then produced a thermos of piping hot tea. Just what she needed to keep her mind sharp.

Despite the cold it was quite a nice night out, a light breeze ruffled her hair and sent a light shiver down her spine. She sipped on her hot tea, relishing the warmth it spread throughout her body.

After her short break she looked back up at the sky, then consulted her star map. She decided to take a look at Centaurus, it was after all the neighbour of Lupus, so she wouldn't have to search for long.

Centaurus, untile the many constellations, actually looked like the image it was supposed to represent. Just by looking at the stars positioned in the sky she could easily identify them as resembling a Centaur.

SPOILER!!: Emily's Notebook

1:10
Centaurus:
represents a Centaur from Greek mythology that goes byu the name of Chiron. The Centaur is a creature that has the body of a horse and the torso, head and arms of a man. The myth suggests that Chiron was accidently wounded by Hercules- who was being mentored by Chiron. Chiron was in so much pain that he pleaded with the gods to end his suffering. Zues the king of the gods gave his consent and let him die, granting him a place among the stars.
Rigel Kentaurus is the brightest star of the Centaurus constellation.

Emily checked the time on her silver pocket watch... it was getting too late. She needed sleep.

After packing up her telescope and storing it safely she placed her belongings in her bag and left the Observatory, descending the stairs to the seventh floor, where she would locate her common room.

Samira gazed up at the stars through her telescope. The stars really were beautiful and Samira decided that this was the perfect place to come and relax. The first constellation she saw was the Big Dipper. She looked up at it and smiled. It really was very pretty.

Samira pulled out her journal and favorite quill and began to write.

Tonight i saw the Big Dipper. The Big Dipper is also known as Ursa Major or the Big Bear. The two stars at the end of the bowl of the Big Dipper are called the "Pointer Stars" because a line drawn between them points to Polaris, the North Star. The Big Dipper is a circumpolar asterism, which means it stays above the horizon all night long as it apparently rotates around Polaris due to the Earth's rotation. It is also comprised of very bright stars in an easy-to-locate pattern.

Nika walked to the observatory for the third time that week. She carried her telescope carefully and looked at the ground. No tripping for her tonight. She looked up from the ground only to find a place to sit. Her eyes met those of Samira's and she instantly smiled. "Hey Samira! Mind if I join you?" She laid down the telescope and turned to Samira again. "Atronomy homework?" Nika smiled knowingly.

Nika reached into her bag for her quill and notebook. She peeked into the telescope again and looked through the beautiful night sky. She found a constellation right away. She scribbled into her notebook and reread her entry.

Tonight I see the Little Dipper. It looks a lot like the Big Dipper only it's smaller. The Little Dipper is also known as Ursa Minor. A well known star in the little dipper is the north star. The north star is known as Polaris.

Now that he mentioned it, it probably would have been rather different for them if they were living during those ancient times. Hercules was before even Hogwarts time, wasn’t he? "It'd probably be really different, of course." Obviously. No Hogwarts, no Ollivanders, no Diagon Alley, no Hogsmeade…Merlin, the Ministry of Magic probably wouldn’t have been created during that time. "What if we were muggles?" That question came out of nowhere, but it was one that popped into her mind. Hmm, what would a muggle life be like? And during that time period?

Breaking out of her thoughts, she smiled before shrugging her shoulders. "A strong guy who lived through twelve very hard quests…" Hehe, well her previous thoughts on the matter were starting to sound truer then what she had thought. "I wouldn't doubt that he had quite a fan club." Grinning, her focus went back to star gazing and looking for any constellations. Hmm, she should've brought some sort of guide on what the constellations looked like. Oh wait, Josh had his book? Maybe she could borrow it for a moment or so. Or maybe not...

Which star!?

The red one? Hearing his description of the star, her blushing red cheeks may have just confirmed they both had some sort of red on them if it weren't for the Gryffindor crest of the shirt. Thank Merlin it was dark out, huh? "Really? I would have deemed it the Joshua Carter constellation." she smirked, writing it down in her notes anyhow since she wasn't finding any other constellations at the moment. "It being a Gryffindor color and the brightest in the sky." Josh was a little ball of sunshine after all.

Just as she was looking back up to the night time sky, her gaze landed on an area she hadn't really been looking at before. Hmm, yes, she supposed staring in the same spot would make it a tad harder to find different constellations. Especially since in this spot, there was onethat kinda looked like the Draco constellation. She couldn't be sure though. "Can I borrow your book?"

Wow, Sophie's notes were detailed, Patroclus smiled to himself, after looking at his own Parchment, however he decided he would add in descriptions from the text book later, right now he was having to much fun looking into the stars.

"I think we should look for Leo, just for the sake of our Reputations," The male Prefect laughed, as he bumped his telescope just the tiniest bit, without noticing.

Putting his eye back to the lens he noticed that Draco was gone, "Hold on, check this out!" He said, waving Sophie over to his telescope, "Look that really faint collection of stars, I swear I have read about it."

Hoping onto his knees, the boy began to search for the co-ordinates and the match constellation, "Here we are," he announced after a few moments, "Vulpecula or Little Fox!"

She put an eye on the lens of the telescope. She looked up when Helena spoke. "That's good. I figured that since you asked that it was okay for me too!" She grinned and got back to work. Default Astronomy Extra Credit Assignment Post #3
½ EagleBrain ♥ Creeperdoodle ♥ Raven Dor ♥ Berry ♥ ½ Team House Elf

Emily came back up to the Observatory the following night, she'd had a full on day with classes and homework and now she was going to get some more of her Astronomy Extra Credit Assignment done.

Again Emily went through the motions of setting up her telescope and stool, she took out her notebook and headed the next page with a title and the date.
SPOILER!!: Emily's Notebook

Astronomy Extra Credit Assignment
Constellations

Continued...

22 March

Once this was done she cocked her head to the night sky. All the pretty stars looked down at her. Somehow Emily always felt insignificant when she looked up at the night sky. There was something about it that just made her troubles seem mundane and unimportant. Nothing mattered... nothing was worthy of matter... the night sky oozed Greatness, it was a beautiful thing.

Searching the sky's Emily came across a constellation, after consulting her star map she realised it was...
"Cancer"
Emily flipped open her text book and did some light reading on Cancer, then she made a few notes in her notebook, sketching in a diagram as she did so.

SPOILER!!: Emily's Notebook

10:08
Cancer:
is one of the thirteen Zodiac Constellations. Though Cancer is not composed of any particularly bright stars- none brighter than fourth magnitude. Having said that Tarf also known as Beta Canceri is Cancer's brightest star. Greek mythology suggests that Cancer- who had played a minor role in Hercules' Twelve Labours- was sent by Queen of the Gods, Hera, to distract Hercules. This resulted in Caner- the crab, being crushed by Hercules' foot. Hera was gratful for the crabs effort and gave it a place amongst the stars.
Cancer is also in close proximity to the Beehive Cluster- a group of open cluster stars- and has one of the largest star populations in comparison to other nearby star clusters.

Silly Cancer... doesn't even resemble a crab.
Emily released a sigh, then searched for another constellation she could add to her notebook/journal.

"Hey! I was looking for Scorpius!" Helena suddenly said. "That's SO not fair," she added, now crossing her arms. Acting, of course. She couldn't be mad at Caroline for spotting Scorpius before she did. "And sure," she said, almost whispering. About the textbook. That ruined her being-mad-at-Caroline-acting.

She looked again at the pretty and shiny stars. Uhh there were just too many! But she found another one. "I found Hydra," the girl grinned, now taking a few notes from her textbook.

Super Slytherin Buddy || ⅓ She-Snake Trio || 'I taste like chocolate and potatoes'

Heave, ho. Heave, ho. Heeeeeave!

Destiny found herself sitting on the steps to the Observatory, her very nice and clean telescope sitting on the step just below her. The thing was so bloody heavy and the fact that she did not like walking up stairs did not help at all. She scooted herself up a step at a time, heaving the heavy, useless piece of junk up along as she went.

For someone who just ate about two whole boxes of chocolate, the girl really had no energy at all.

She had lost track of time thanks to her trek up there, but that did not matter. She didn't start until a little after dinnertime, so it couldn't really be that late, could it?

She was a slowpoke if it was.

Resting against the wall, catching her breath and glancing over at the windows she still had to make her way over to, Destiny glanced at her watch..the watch she had no recollection of getting..and noticed it was only a little after nine. Sweet Merlin! She was a slowpoke. It was a good thing she got that permission slip, wasn't it?

Hoisting herself up, she dragged the telescope over to the nearest window, setting it up quite quickly and shoving her eye to the..thingamabob where her eye goes. Astronomy was her worst subject, she didn't know what it was called! Just when she thought the sky could not get any more boring, she spotted something that looked familiar. And it was a good thing she had looked in the textbook during th lesson. She was looking at the Crater constellation and it made her realize just how thirsty she was.

GAH!

SPOILER!!: Notebooook!

Astronomy; Looking at the boring stars for extra credit.

Entry 1:
After practically dying because of those steps I had to walk up, all while carrying my CLEAN telescope, at around 9:45pm, I finally found the constellation Crater. It really does look like a cup. You know, if you connect all the dots stars. And by noticing it IS the shape of a cup, I realized how thirsty I was. Crater is a mean constellation, teasing me like that.

When Patrcolus scanned her notes Sophie felt like she had gone a bit beyond what was needed with them. She did though want to make an impression in Prof Hadley and maybe earn an extra point or two for being ambitious. It was definitley fun looking at the stars with a friend as company.

Letting out a warm laugh she nodded "Of course we should for the sake of our reputations. But who will know that we found the snake constellation first, nobody except Prof Hadley and she is trustworthy." The brunette adjusted the postion of her telescope and was about to search the heavens when Patroclu beckoned her over to his telescope.

The excitment in his voice made Sophie bolt over. Sticking her eye to the lens she saw a very faint constellation that looked a bit like a fox. She had been about to fetch her own textbook when Patroclus found the matching constellation. Looking one more time into the lens and then at the textbook image Sophie beamed. "Good job on finding Vulpecula. Do you think we will get extra points for finding a hard to see constellation?"

SPOILER!!: Sophie's parchment

Time: 9.45 pm
Constellation: Vulpecula or Little fox.
Extra: Is found in the spring months, but hard to locate.
Characteristics: A faint constellation that was identifed in the 17th century by the astronomer Johannes Hevelius. It was then illustrated as a fox with a goose in its jaws.
Mythology: It is rumoured that the fox ate a goose which is why its known only as the little fox in present time. It's a dim constellation with no brighter stars than 4.4.

Default Astronomy Extra Credit Assignment Post #4
½ EagleBrain ♥ Creeperdoodle ♥ Raven Dor ♥ Berry ♥ ½ Team House Elf

Emily stiffled a yawn as she gazed up from her notebook once more. She was learning a lot about these constellations, well... in terms of general background information anyway... she didn't really know them in depth but she supposed this was what was to be expected from the assignment- basic knowledge of some constellations.

Checking the time on her pocket watch, Emily realised she had spent half an hour looking at Cancer... ugh... time to move on.

Getting off her stool Emily adjusted the bearings on her telescope and continued searching the night sky. She knew what she was looking for... she was searching for Draco. And there it was...

"Draco... latin for dragon"
, mumbled Emily to herself. After observing it for a few minutes Emily sat back down on her stool and took up her text book. What could she learn about Draco?..........

SPOILER!!: Emily's Notebook

10:46
Draco:
is latin for Dragon. It is a Northern circumpolar constellation- meaning it never sets and is always visible in the Northern hemisphere. The brightest star in the Draco constellation is Thuban. Draco was also one of the fourty-eight constellations identified by Ptolemy.

Emily suddenly had a thought... were they supposed to be looking for circumpolar constellations???... they had been mentioned in class after all... or were they supposed to be looking for Spring Northern Hemisphere constellations??...
Deciding it probably didn't matter too much, but to be on the safe side, Emily made the conscious decision to search for Leo.

After consulting her star map and adjusting her telescope yet again she gazed through the lense at the pretty balls of gass... because thats what they were right?... they weren't pretty twinkling lights suspended from the roof of heaven, they were just balls of gas reflecting the light from the sun...

"AHA!" she exclaimed a little too loudly... "Leo!"... or was it Leo? Emily doubled checked in her book. Yep it was definately Leo.
Emily added an entry about Leo into her notebook.

SPOILER!!: Emily's Notebook

11:10
Leo:
is one of the Zodiac signs and lies between Cancer and Virgo. (Was there a reason all the Zodiacs were clumped together?)... In various cultures though the constellation went by other names or variants of Leo, in each of these cultures he represented a lion. The brightest star of the Leo constellation is Regulus which forms the lions breast. This has its own representation, as Regulus is also known as the King Star and so, being part of the Leo constellation gives it a certain Regal interpretation.
