Default Observatory

The Milky Way Galaxy contains anywhere between 200 and 400 billion stars. A tiny fraction of those can be viewed right here, in the Hogwarts Observatory. This circular room was locked for a long time, but Professor Antares opened it again two terms ago - complete with a huge telescope that was a new addition then. As it is difficult to operate, students need permission from the professor before they are allowed to use it, but a number of smaller telescopes that anyone and everyone is free to use are stowed away in cupboards lining the rounded walls along with empty potion vials and other astronomy items.

Large star charts are pinned up on the walls as well. Not all of these belong to the school. Those that do not have a great number of notes and calculations added to them - although Professor Antares is first and foremost a teacher now, he is still able to supply colleagues with data and measurements. You are, of course, free to study his charts, but make very sure not to remove or misplace anything.

Stargazing, naturally, is an activity best pursued at night, and as such, the Observatory usually remains unlocked. Of course, there are superseding school rules that limit the hour at which students can still be out of bed. If you desire to study the wonders of the cosmos later than that, you need a note from Professor Antares. Should a student be found without such a note (or, alternatively, a creative excuse), he or she can expect... trouble.

In the same way that a library is more than just a building where books are stored, the Observatory is as much a place of scientific inquiry as it is a shrine to the grandeur and beauty of the Universe. Professor Antares, when he doesn't use the telescope for work, often comes here to think to himself, or for some peace and quiet. Please respect him and any other teacher or student spending his or her time here in this way by not running around or shouting.

Because he'd recently spoken about how pretty the sights of Hogwarts Grounds Saylen's office were from the Astronomy Tower...and because he hadn't been up here in a while, then Treyen decided to visit it today.

The last visit had been a very odd one, indeed, with that guy from Hufflepuff who no one ever heard of. Yes, he was still thinking that boy was no Hufflepuff, but a Slytherin in disguise.

Either way, he was no longer here.

And Treyen was. And...Emmy was here? "Emmy?" he asked, approaching her, "Hey," he smiled, but soon the smiled disappeared, "What are you doing here?" and leaning so dangerously close to the openings of the Observatory?

Emmy's head started buzzing, as though filled with a swarm of bees, and her vision began to go fizzy and starry. Her breathing became ragged and much too fast; and she could feel herself overbalancing - she was too close to the edge! "Treyen?"

Well, yes, who else?

And since he didn't like how close she was, and had quick reflexes (thanks Quidditch Captain for making him practice) then he leaned forward and took her hand, pushing her towards him as he did.

"What exactly were you thinking?" he asked, eyebrows knitting together. And he was forever oblivious, "The best sights of the Grounds are the other way," not to mention that Saylen could spot her from where she stood. And that was no good. Catching Saylen's attention was never good.

First the Acromantulas, and now this awful mistake with Hogwarts' sights. Seems that Emmy owed him more than just cupcakes.

It wasn't until now that he noticed her worried face, "Are you...are you alright?" because he was now concerned.

Emmy took several deep breaths and almost collapsed - she would have fallen to her death if it weren't for Treyen. "S-s-sorry about that, Treyen..." She closed her eyes and held his arm tightly.
"Tough times, been getting to me lately - I get a lot of panic attacks these days. Thank fully that one wasn't too bad..."

Emmy didn't have to answer, it was clear that she was NOT alright. Whatever it was that was troubling her must be important, right? Because she didn't even felt that way around Acromantulas.

Yes, he was worried, and shook his head, "It's okay, you don't have to apologize," really, she didn't have to. But, maybe she should sit? Treyen wasn't precisely sure he could carry her weight, it was likely that he could, but if he couldn't and she fainted or something then she'll get hurt, no? "I think you better sit," he said, taking her to the nearest step and sitting next to her.

He didn't even notice he was still holding her hand, though, since many thoughts were crossing his mind. Tough times? Panic attacks? Were they even going to the same school and attending the same lessons? "Do you want me to bring the Healer?" he didn't mind. At all.

The Hufflepuff boy couldn't refrain from asking the most important question, "What's wrong?" he could take it, right? Whatever it was? Yup. Lockharts were strong like that. That's why he almost cried when he found out that Kingsley was gone. Ha. Brilliant. Not.

Emmy sat down gratefully. "Thank you so much Treyen - I dread to think what would've happened if..." She trailed off, shuddering involuntarily.
At his next question, she simply sighed.
"It's...difficult. My dad was in hospital quite a lot over the summer, but nobody seemed to know what was wrong. Mum's been updating me weekly, and the last I heard, he'd detiriorated again - but that was almost two months ago! And of course, I'm a terrible worrier, so I've been getting quite worked up lately. I try to keep it out of the public eye..."

Really, it was nothing, but he supposed he could at least accept the 'thank you' part? "No problem," he said, with one single nod, what were friends for, right? Well, friends were there to help you take out the Seeker whenever the Captain wasn't looking. Ha.

But then she said the 'If' part and he looked at her, eyes widening a bit before shrugging the thought away, "Well, there are no Ifs, because nothing happened, right?" he gave her a small smile, as to say not to mention any 'If' situation ever again? At least not about this moment.

Oh?

That was...a very awful situation Emmy was in. Treyen hated those. He never knew what to say, or at least thought he didn't. "I see, well, that's...," terrible news? He didn't know for sure, so he didn't finish that sentence, "...eh, I hope your dad got better, though." Yes, but he was actually wondering what had managed to upset the banker, didn't they live quiet lives? "Look, I want to tell you not to worry, but I know you will do so no matter what I say...," true, if he had some insight into the situation, then he may have had a different opinion, but he was just as clueless as she was, as far as 'news' that is, "Still, try not to. Things will work out, eventually." No matter the outcome? Well, it's been said that bad news travel faster than good ones, but it seemed to work the other way around in his experience.

"I assume you've written to your mom, right?" if not, then she should.

Emmy gave him a small, lopsided smile - after all, she did feel a little better... Just talking to a close friend did wonders for your state of mind, she realised.
"I'll do my utmost not to worry! Although, it is difficult..."
Taking a breath, she changed tack, "Still! I guess they would have written if it were bad news."
Drooping a little, she answered, "Yes. I've been writing to her several times a week..."

At that point, Dapple, her beautiful snowy owl dropped out of the sky, and lurched towards her. She was bleeding, and one wing seemed to be damaged. There was a letter tied to her leg...

Good. Treyen was about to nod, but failed to do so, "I know it is," or 'must be' if we're going to be precise, since he'd never been in such a position. His worries usually had an answer just as soon as he'd had them. His sister, however, was different, and she had reasons for it, too.

He said nothing at her next statement. She was kind of right but he didn't feel like worrying her even more. Either one of two things happened. One, her father is on the same state, and so the need to write the same thing was unnecessary, evil, but unnecessary. Two, her father was better, but her mom didn't have the time to write a letter since he was recovering and all. Selfish, but it could happen. Three...oh, yeah, three things, not two, sorry. Three, er, her father, well, was no longer with them or is even worse and they didn't feel the need to worry Emmy even more.

And he'd been right about one thing...she'd written to her mom.

The boy was about to say something when an owl made its appearance known. And the poor thing didn't look too good either. "Is she yours?" he didn't want to take the letter if it was her owl, but if it wasn't hers, then they ought to seek the owner, and probably take it to Saylen....wait...let's rephrase...Emmy will be taking the owl to Saylen...and Treyen will find the owner. Yes.

Yes.
Emmy gasped and rushed to catch the bird before she hit the flagstones.
"Oh my god, Dapple! Yes, yes, she's mine..." she added absently, trying to feel for any broken bones.
Dapple's wounds were not as bad as they had first seemed, thankfully.
The wing was not broken - clearly, something had been fired at the owl, because there seemed to be a crude arrowhead protruding from beneath the shoulder joint.
As she ran her fingers lightly over her panicked bird, Emmy felt something attached to Dapple's leg.
A letter, addressed to 'Emelia J Frost, Hogwarts'.
With her hands shaking, she gently removed the letter, and opened it.

'To my darling Emmy,

Please forgive me for not writing sooner - circumstances have not been favourable.
Your father, thank the lord, is quite well, however he is still in grave danger.
It seems he made some ill-advised business connections, and I fear they are not who they seem.
Michael will hear nothing against them, of course, but I'm sure I saw at least one of them carrying a wand...

The next paragraph was in a much hastier hand - evidently her mother had been harassed.
I cannot write any more at the moment - the men have turned up at our house, and- I was right, they've drawn their wands, and are bombarding the house with all kinds of magical weaponry.
I will write as soon as I can my love.
Your loving mother,
Jane.

Emmy sat down again, her legs suddenly unable to bear her weight. The letter was dated five weeks earlier.

Emmy sat down again, her legs suddenly unable to bear her weight. The letter was dated five weeks earlier.
Oh, dear Gilderoy! It was her owl. That...couldn't be good for her, right? And...Dapple? Well, that was creative. For a Snowy owl, that is. Kaika had named hers 'Snowy'. Yeah, she had quite an imagination.

Since it was her owl, then it must be her letter. And it was. Treyen read whom it was for, and frown a bit, was her name Emelia? How come he didn't know that? Focus, Lockhart, focus. He remained seated, though, paying enough attention in case Emmy needed enough help.

She sat back, though. But from the look on her face it didn't seem that she had good news.

That's when he decided to take a peek, "See? Your dad was getting better...," he hadn't finish reading the letter, though, and then...'grave danger', 'ill-advised', 'wand'...oh. "Oh," yes, that was all he said. Then he eyed the date and his eyes widened a bit.

Looking from Dapple to Emmy he started to speak again, "Do you remember parts of the Harry Potter times? When they were hiding from Voldemort they couldn't write or contact their loved ones, you know, yet they were doing fine," Dobby had died, correct, but neither of them did. He was kind of hoping that such a fact made her not worry that much, "And when Sirius Black was hiding, he didn't contact Harry Potter through the usual methods, and it could take up to weeks for Harry's owl to find him," yes, but Sirius Black died in the end, probably not a very good fact to share.

She couldn't believe that she'd forgotten something like this.

Fallon looked at Iris concerned. She'd answered that question way too quickly for her liking. "Are you sure?" Fallon could tell that something was wrong and she was going to figure it out.
Iris smiled at Fallon. "Exactly. And you're welcome; it's what friends are for." Iris sighed, and lay back on the floor, so she was looking up at the solar system model on the ceiling. The prefect smiled when Fallon brought up her sewing hobby. "I put together my outfit for the Tea Party, but it's not really 'cool'." In all honesty, she'd not really made much since learning how to sew. Maybe it would be worthwhile starting again.

Still lay on the floor, Iris looked up at Fallon. She then gave her a sad look and stared back up at the ceiling. For a long while, the girl was silent.

"I miss him." The prefect said, finally. She was almost silent and it hurt for her to admit; to make the feeling real. "I miss him a lot." Iris brinked a couple of times, and a tear or two slipped from her eyes. She focused on Venus, and watched it as it rotated around the solar system model. The sunset seemed insignificant and unimportant now. The beauty of the landscape didn't even matter to Iris. She'd finally voiced the thing that had been on her mind the most.

Emmy sat next to Treyen, letting his words of comfort wash over her.
A single tear ran down her cheek, as she whispered,
"But what if they're d-" she gulped, unable to speak the terrible ideas teeming in her mind.
Her friend carried on speaking, reassuringly calm, and she grasped onto the finest threads of hope he gave her.
"Oh yes! I'd forgotten... Maybe you're right, maybe they'll be ok..."
She didn't really believe it, but she tried to convince herself that it had to be the truth. It had to be.

If was a good thing she didn't finish that sentence. He wasn't going to lie, though, the thought had crossed his mind, but since she was already thinking about that, then it was his job to make her see other situations.

Clearly, those other examples were ones with a positive outcome. Except with the many eventualities they caused. But still.

He smiled, "Sooner or later you'll hear something from them," he said, without specifying what kind of news she could be getting. It was better it he not too many detailing was made. He was, however, entirely worried for her family. If there was something he could do..."For now, just let's try to stay positive, and try to mend Dapple," yes, the poor owl.

While there was nothing he could do, perhaps there was someone else who could, "Maybe you should talk to our Head of House." She certainly knows a lot more than he does.

Either her, the pretty Healer, or...well, the Headmaster. But the Healer was their best option, no?

In all honesty, she'd not really made much since learning how to sew.

Fallon smiled at Iris. She let her eyes wander up to the solar system as Iris's did. It was really interesting, even though she never really did too well in Astronomy. "I'm sure it is. I can't wait to see it." She was really excited for the tea party thing. It was going to be cool. "Just throwing this out there, but the school I'm looking at has a fashion design program. I think you'd be good at it." And it helped to be able to sew your own clothes.

Fallon moved over closer to her friend as she hardly heard her whisper. As tears started to fall, she put her arm around Iris's shoulder. She watched as her eyes wandered back up to the ceiling. "Do you want to talk about it?" She was here to listen or her to just supply comfort. Whatever Iris wanted.

The prefect grinned. "It's yellow." She said, simply. It was enough to explain to Fallon that it totally was not Iris's style at all. Not that yellow is a bad thing. Green is far better, though. She looked at Fallon as she spoke up. "Really?" Iris said, sounding pretty surprised. She wasn't sure if she was saying that to the course or the fact that Fallon thought she'd be good at it. "I dunno... I'd really like to go travelling when we graduate. There's so many beautiful places in the world..."

Great. She was crying. Worse, it was the silent tears. When Fallon sat down next to her and pulled her into a hug, Iris sniffled up and tried to hold back some of the tears. It was a wasted effort, though. Iris nodded and then shook her head. "I don't know what to talk about. There is nothing to talk about." Wiping away a tear or two, Iris looked at Fallon. "I've not seen him properly in months. Whenever I do see him, he's busy with homework or game strategy. And whenever he's probably not busy with those, I'm out on patrol or in a prefect meeting."

Iris took a couple of deep breaths, and looked out over the lake. Her eyes lingered on the giant oak tree for a couple of seconds. "He probably spends more time with the girls in the Quidditch team than he does me." She wasn't going to admit it out loud, but Iris Beaumont was jealous of those girls. So very extremely jealous. Even the First Year. She got to see Aaron more than Iris did.

"Halloween, Bonfire Night, Christmas, New Years... He wasn't around for ANY of the big holidays this year. I honestly don't know where he was hiding or what he could have been doing... He just... wasn't there..."
Iris wasn't even talking to Fallon anymore. She was just talking aloud, her gaze back on the giant oak tree.

Eyes closed, and breathing deeply, Emmy started to calm down a little, although she still couldn't think clearly.
"Yes... Dapple, she needs attention... Head of House? I suppose... I'd rather not, but perhaps..." she stopped, aware that she was rambling again.
"Dapple first - she needs help more than I do."
Shakily, Emmy got to her feet, but had not walked more than a few paces before her balance gave out, her head began to spin, and she had to grab onto the nearest solid thing - which seemed to be Treyen.

Iris wasn't even talking to Fallon anymore. She was just talking aloud, her gaze back on the giant oak tree.
Fallon giggled at the long description of the costume. "Mine's red." Together they made Gryffindor colors. Which was weird. Fallon nodded her head. "Yes really." Of course Fallon was going to encourage her best friend! Fallon nodded. She'd completely understood, having already had this conversation with Descoteaux. "I was talking with the Charms professor about that. I figured I could go to school for photography and then start working as a travel photographer. Get two things done at once." It really was a brilliant idea. And gave her a better head start on her future.

Fallon just nodded and tried to comfort her friend. She'd only been in the opposite position not that long ago. And it was even more than a guy. This was different in so many ways though. She couldn't stand seeing her best friend like this over her other best friend. It wasn't good. "You don't have to talk about it if you don't want to or don't know what to say."

Fallon watched as Iris gathered herself and turned to look out over the lake. Fallon always had a feeling Iris didn't like that about Aaron playing quidditch. The Slytherin team really was mostly girls.

And now Fallon could tell Iris was just saying things to let them out. She let Iris finish before she said anything. "I want to say I know what you mean, but I don't. And I'm sorry I can't say that and for what you're going through. I'm always here if you need me. And I have a Beater's bat you can borrow if you need it." She gave her friend a caring smile.

Treyen...blinked. Many times. Though, he knew it must be very hard to keep her head straight, after all, it's only been a couple minutes since she got the letter, perhaps it hasn't sinked in yet.

And now he was about to speak about the owl, but she suddenly stood up. Wasn't she going to wait for him? Or, well, if she was going to Saylen's then he wasn't feeling like following, but he wasn't going to let Emmy wander off on her own. The letter was still too soon as to figure out how she'll really take the news.

As he made a move to get up, he actually couldn't do so, because her balance was failing and he seemed to be the only support at the moment.

His hold on her was now pretty tight, "You need to rest," he said, looking more worried than before, "And...I think we have to get you something to drink," because eating was out of the question, but a glass of water could be good. As for Dapple, "Do you think she can wait a while? Until you're better?" he didn't want to take the owl to Saylen, REALLY.

Emmy found herself clinging to the young Hufflepuff for dear life - what was wrong with her? She couldn't walk, couldn't stand even, her head was spinning, and quite honestly, she was scared. What if it was a serious mental thing...? She ordered herself to stop thinking like that - everything was fine; it must be.
"My head... Feels really weird..." She said, fighting off an unpleasant feeling that someone else was in control.

And there was little he could do now, that's why he'll have to leave this to someone who could manage it much better. It's not that he wanted to stop by Healer Moretti's office or anything, but he was actually concerned about the look on Emmy's head.

Very concerned.

Forget about the owl. Emmy was more important now.

And so what if he needed to take the creature to Saylen while Emmy was being taken care of? They were friends, no?

"That's it. I'm taking you to Moretti." It was NOT a question. And he tried to stand up as much as he could muster while still holding Emmy. They were going, whether she wanted to or not. Yes. The Hospital Wing seemed like the best place right now.

Head spinning, and feeling fuzzier by the minute, Emmy held on tightly to Treyen. She tried not put too much weight on him, but in her current state that was... difficult.
"Thanks Treyen..."she murmured through a haze of purple fireworks,
"You're the nicest person I know..." she smiled, hoping it would come across right.

The good thing was...she was not objecting to him taking her to the pretty Healer. The bad thing...he had to practically carry take her to the Hospital Wing and they were on the Observatory.

Difficult task ahead. Considering he wasn't one of the tallest boys.

"It's no problem, really," he shook his head, or at least tried to, and...wait, what? Really? She hasn't met Arya yet, then. "Thanks, you're a nice person too," the boy nodded, and kept on walking towards the stairs...

..this wasn't going to be easy, but at least Emmy was holding Dapple.

So, Healer, here we go!

"Red and Yellow." Iris repeated, with a disbelieving grin on her face. "We're going against EVERYTHING Slytherin by wearing those colours." The prefect sighed. Not that there was anything wrong with the other houses. They just weren't as cool as Slytherin. She looked to Fallon as she continued to explain about this university. "That sounds fantastic, Fallon. You'd be brilliant at it, too."

Iris talked for a while. She wasn't even sure what she was talking about. The girl was just letting her feelings out. Something she didn't do, often. As Fallon tried to comfort her a little, Iris giggled and smiled. "Thanks, Fallon. It means a lot to me, it really does..." She sighed a little, somewhat happier than before. "Though... I don't think I'll need your bat." She added, with another giggle.

"It's so weird. Just... everything. Magic. It's so bizarre. We use it every day... but we don't really understand it. Where does it come from?" Iris had taken her wand from her pony tail, and conjured up some small, coloured balls of light, then twirled her wand lazily, smiling slightly as the light danced around. Iris wasn't sure how she got onto this topic. It was cheerful and interesting... so it would do. There was no point moping around, she could always go and look for Aaron later. Now though, she was going to hang out with Fallon.
