"Right, sorry Professor," the little redhead replied. At his next question her hand shot up once more and she answered, "It's an invisible charm called the cushioning charm. If I remember correctly from Quidditch Through the Ages it was developed by Elliot Smethwyck." Selina replied. She was so happy to be in her element. Quidditch and flying was her thing, finally a class she knew with certainity she would understand.

Again, Sierra eyed the dictionary-eating Gryffindor. Of course she'd chime in with a name and a date. Returning her attention back to the professor, Sierra raised her hand again. "That's the Cushioning Charm," she suggested.

...invented in 1820 by Elliot Smethwyck, apparently.

"Correct! One point to each of you for your answers," Vindictus replied. "Now who can explain how this charm works?"

Selina once more shot up her hand, "It creates an invisible pillow or comfortable area for your... lower area and the comfort of said area." At her end of her answer she blushed. She had mentioned the bums of everyone in class.

sweetpinkpixie 01-22-2011 03:40 AM

How it worked? Wasn't that implied in his previous question? "Professor, the charm creates an invisible pillow on a surface. It doesn't have to be only brooms, but I suppose you could use it on a hard chair as well."

krazypenguin 01-22-2011 03:40 AM

Ama's hand flew up "It creates an invisible cushion to sit on." She said matter of factly.

Anna Banana 01-22-2011 03:45 AM

Despite the fact that she was slightly annoyed with the dictionary eater, Sierra smiled on account of that fact that she was earning more and more house points by the minute! This made her happy, of course. She could just see that hourglass changing question by question!

Raising her hand again, she said, "The charm creates an invisible pillow right on the handle of the broom. It makes the handle more comfortable to ride on."

ArianaBlack 01-22-2011 03:46 AM

Nika knew the answer to this question because qudditch intrigued her so she did some research on flying. "Well Proffesor, the cushioning charm basically does what the name says. It makes an invisible cushion to appear on the broom so that it makes it more comfortable for the person flying." She hoped her answer would suffice. Hopefully she can help get points back to Gryffindor

uh..How does the charm work?

"Well, maybe...it gives the rider the feeling of like sitting on a cushion?" She said tentatively

top94a 01-22-2011 03:55 AM

Raven smile, maybe he can give an answer to the question it's basically common sense, he raised his hand, "err, professor, it will provide a cushion like invisible pillow around the broom, that can support the riders" Raven say, unsure

"Correct! Two points to each of your for your answers," Vindictus said. It was apparent that the students had done some reading prior to class. "These are just two of the many charms placed on broomsticks. They're applied in different layers so that one charm won't compromise the effectiveness of the other. Now its time for my final question of the lesson."

Pause.

"What other types of charms do you think are placed on broomsticks? No more than five charms per person."

krazypenguin 01-22-2011 04:09 AM

"I think anti-apparition so people can't steal your broom, a flying charm, crafting charms to form the wood, and probably anti-fire and water charms to keep the elements from damaging your broom." Raising her hand, she blushed. This was a harder question but she was pretty sure that her answers made good sense.

Selina thought hard back to the one summer her father and her had built a broom, more like he had built and she had watched. What were the charms that he put on that broom. And then she remembered, "Gripping charm, flying charm, disillusionment charm, and the one's we previously stated are all charms on the broom, sir."

ArianaBlack 01-22-2011 04:13 AM

Nika thought hard. Any other charms. Well I guess I should just guess... she thought to herself.

"Err Professor is there a charm for making a broom go faster? And would there be a charm so that the broom would break as easily?" Nika thought hmmm maybe I should give another guess. Nika wanted to get as many house points as possible, "Is there a charm to make it easier to control?"

sweetpinkpixie 01-22-2011 04:16 AM

No more than five charms per person? Did that mean that the ones they had already mentioned were fair game? He didn't specify that they weren't.

"Well, since we have already discussed them, the Cushioning Charm and the Braking Charm. There is also the Flying Charm, without it, the broom wouldn't be able to fly. The Gripping Charm to help you hold onto a broom better. Finally, the Disillusionment Charm so that non-magical people cannot see that witches and wizards are flying around on brooms."

Anna Banana 01-22-2011 04:30 AM

Hmm...five other charms placed on brooms. Surely Sierra could come up with something to say besides the few that had already been mentioned. This was the last question, too, so as soon as Sierra had answered this one, she was likely free to go. With that thought in mind, she raised her hand high to suggest an answer.

"Well, there was that charm we did in the beginning of class--Up!--where we summoned our broom into our hands," she said, trying to say something different from what the others had already said. "...there's also the ones that have already been mentioned, like the Disillusionment Charm and the Gripping Charm."

Luin was surprised that she was not able to get an answer in to the first question. She must not have been paying attention as diligently as she thought. she then raised her hand to answer about the charms, " There is the Cushioning charm as mentioned before, a Disillusionment charm so that the rider of the broom can be unnoticed by muggles or whoever they do not wish to be seen by, a gripping charm so the rider would be able to grip the broom better, a flying charm which is what makes it possible for the broom to fly, and i guess you could use a summoning charm to make a broom come to you but I dunno if that counts."

top94a 01-22-2011 07:33 AM

Raven new in flying, no contest with that, even he loves answering, but he didn't know any, other than those discussed earlier, he decided to again listen, and watch the class.

"Well, there is the obvious charm, the flying one, and I've read somewhere about a charm placed on the Firebolts, for example, some kind of protective charm against the wind." She stopped for a moment, imagining someone on a Firebolt without that charm. It seemed unlikely that someone could hang on it at that speed.

Disneymaniac 01-22-2011 09:30 AM

What charms? He didn't know any charms. He was too far behind at this school, and he didn't like it. Maybe make stuff up. Yep. "I guess there would be a restraining charm on it, to hold you in place. Also an anti-gravity charm, to make you float." He had to think back to his rollercoasters. But they were on tracks. It didn't help.

jengirls109 01-22-2011 04:52 PM

Jaina raised her hand "Professor, is there one to keep the broom from going too high or too low? They would be good ones for those learning, like us." She smiled and hoped she earned house points.

lilshorty7923 01-22-2011 06:12 PM

Effy didn't know too much about brooms, but she decided to give the question a try, "Umm a flying charm? To make it fly... And a fireproof charm?" It would be kind of irresponsible not to have one, wouldn't it? "Is there a charm that protects the riders from the high speeds and keeps them on the broom?" She had a feeling charms like those would be necessary.

demented_death_eater 01-22-2011 06:20 PM

Leave it to Vindictus to ask the class a challenging question - all he wanted them to do was think. It was the Ravenclaw in him that decided to make itself known.

Not bad. Not bad at all.

"Those of you who provided answers besides the two charms we discussed will receive points. However, I cannot reveal all of the charms that go into a broom - trade secrets!" he said to the class and smiled. "Make sure that you read up on brooms before the next lesson. Class dismissed!"

nogoodforyou 01-22-2011 06:23 PM

It was over? When Helena started to enjoy flying... Oh well.

"Goodbye professor," she said smiling as she passed professor Vindictus.

Hugo skipped up the field to the professor after putting back the school broom. "Sir, can I have my broom back?" he asked politely. He wouldn't go back without his precious Firebolt. He thought about the points he had not received, because he was too shy to answer.

Hugo, who was too tired to say that it didn't state you couldn't bring your own broom, and just nodded. "Thanks, professor. It won't happen again." he said and walked away.
