Default Divination 2

The grounds after dark can seem like a different place than they appear during the day, but as long as you stay clear of the forest, there shouldn't be much to be afraid of. Especially when there appears to be a large bonfire set in a clear spot near the lake, and Renée had made sure everything was set up. A multitude of logs were arranged near the fire, for the students to sit on if they liked, especially as there was still some snow on the ground. Behind the improvised seating, several smaller unlit fires were arranged for later, but for now the big fire was the focus.

Not to mention the containers of various campfire treats: hot dogs and marshmallows near a collection of sticks, and other s'mores makings a bit further from the flames along with a smaller basket of hazelnuts, not far from the curled up form of her crup puppy on a pile of blankets. She'd tried to leave Bowie behind, but he wanted to be outside with her. As long as he stayed away from the fire, she was okay with it and she knew he'd enjoy being around the students. And for now she stayed near the fire, keeping warm as she waited for people to arrive.

ooc: Feel free to post your charries arriving, etc. Ask about the food if you like, but wait for approval to take any. I'll be around for another couple hours for replies. And as always, try to keep the chatting to a minimum. The lesson should start in around 12 hours or so.

Kita tightened the scarf around her neck as she walked down towards the grounds. She was a bit confused about this lesson: how can Divination take place in the grounds? Shrugging, she walked a little further along and spotted... was that a huge fire? "Wow!" she breathed out just as she reached the place where the rest of the class and the Professor were. She smiled.

"Evening Professor," she said before taking a seat on one of the logs.

She was wearing her black zipper hoodie to keep her warm and of course you cold see her half of her best friends necklace hanging out of it. "Good evening, professor," she said as she noticed the professor on the opposite side of the fire. Jaina, of course, was wearing all of her new presents from her birthday. She couldn't wait to show Charley that the shirt fit perfect! She hadn't removed her earrings that Ben had gotten her and they shimmered in the light of the fire very beautifully.

Chloe headed out the grounds with a jacket on over her robes. It was still rather cold being night time so she was glad to see a huge fire set up in the area she knew the lesson would be held. As she got closer her jaw dropped seeing all the awesome camp fire food next to the camp fire. She saw the professor and walked over to her and said, "Good evening professor, I hope you will be sharing allof these awwesome treats, no?".

Adelyn pulled her scarf and robes tighter around her as she walked in the dark towards where the fire was located. Even around the huge fire, it was difficult to make out the faces of the other students. "Good evening, Professor Bishop." Adelyn said with a smile, before taking a seat around the fire with the other students, dropping her bag on the ground next to her.

MENTAL SLAP. Come on Hugo- just because this lesson is a total waste of time and brain cells, doesn't mean you can't learn anything from it. Right? Right. It was... Outside. There was food. That was good. But AHH... DIVINATION?? SIGHH. "Hell...o... Professor," he said smiling as brightly as he could.

As more and more students started arriving, Renée started making a note of those who seemed more entranced by the fire itself than the idea of a lesson. It was always a risk, and it seemed there were a number of possible pyromaniacs here at Hogwarts much like anywhere else. She wasn't going to let anything happen, anything destructive that is, and it seemed there were a few students who were ready to hold their friends back. "Hello everyone," she said, to all the newer arrivals who had spoken to her and returning Destiny's wave.

"Yes, it was a rhetorical question, K-Lee, but you're right anyway," she replied to the young Slytherin, who seemed to be a bit embarrassed by her comment. "And thank you Emily," she added to the older Ravenclaw, who had already availed herself of a stick and some marshmallows. Returning her attention to everyone, she smiled again even though it was dark enough that she was mostly silhouetted instead of visible. "I think we'll let a few more people head out, and then start the lesson. Feel free to grab some treats if you'd like, but be careful near the flames," she said. She was fairly certain Lily wouldn't like an influx of burns in her hospital wing from the lesson.

Meh. Destiny didn't know and she couldn't even think about past Divination classes because next thing she knew, she was being sat on.

SAT ON!

And what a pity. He stood up before she even had a chance to push him off of her. Turning to the person who obviously still wanted to be near her since he sat next to her, she waved off his apology as she noticed who it was. It was the boy from the stands during the Triwizard Tournament thing! The one who tried to help her stuff marshmallows in Professor Vinny's vuvuzela!

"You're not going to jump in the fire, too, are you?" she asked, as she noticed him eying up the fire.

Merlin. She couldn't hold everyone's hand.

Mmmm. Chicken!girl was talking to him, right?

"Huh? What fire?" he asked, knitting his eyebrows together and looking at her while he spoke. Ooooooh, yes, that fire, "Oh, no, wait...what? Too? Who is going to do that?" his eyes were back on the fire before she could answer and he smiled. He'd never be in the way of the pretty fire.

And Treyen was surely going to be in its way if he dared to interrupt the dancing of those flames.

So, yes, it was better to be an spectator. Always. When it came to fire, that is.

SPOILER!!: Bishop

And then Bishop spoke. Treats? Right now? He only cared about the fire. And since he was nowhere near feeling hungry, then he'd leave the treats for later...like, when the lesson is over, so he could have something to eat on the way to the Common Room. Yup.

Jake had a little toy golden snitch and he kept mostly to himself these days. There he was at the back of the room, letting the toy go and catching it again, waiting for the class to start in silence.

It seemed the fire itself was distracting everyone from the goodies, but that was fine. They'd last, especially as the snow was acting sort of as a refrigerator, charmed to not melt except for right in the vicintiy of the flames. Either way, it seemed like everyone who was going to show up was there, so the lesson might as well begin, and Renée glanced over at her crup on the blankets for a moment before she spoke again. "Take care that your snitch doesn't get too close to the fire, Jake. I wouldn't want it getting damaged," she said to the Hufflepuff near the back of the group, just as a precaution before she shifted her position to face the class, the fire behind her and slightly to her right. The snitch wasn't bothering her, as long as it didn't distract anyone from class.

"Okay," she began. "I'm not going to pretend you don't know what we're going to be discussing, as, well, obviously," and she gestured toward the bonfire with a grin before availing herself of a marshmallow to roast. "So why don't we just get into things. Pyromancy. Divination by fire. Does anyone want to tell me what they know about it?" There were any number of possibilities, as she knew as a subject, it was fairly unspecific. In the same respect, that gave them more to discuss, while they decided if they wanted any of the food that was waiting.

Alright! Dianna immediately grabbed a marshmallow and placed the whole thing in her mouth. Okay, not her best idea so far...

But this was one of the things she loved Divination.

Umm...Pyromancy? "It was one of the earlier forms of divination and the most basic form of pyromancy is that in which the diviner observes flames, from a sacrificial fire, a candle, or another source of flame, and interprets the shapes that they see within them... but there are also several variations on pyromancy.." she said a she lowered her hand and tried to swallow the rest if the marshmallow.

'Sacrificial fires'? Yes, Treyen eyed the girl as soon as she replied to Bishop. That was...well, the boy never liked that form in which Pyromancy was supposed to be studied. Or the way the Greeks did it, anyway.

The Hufflepuff boy raised his hand, "Well, the flames in torches were also studied," and by who? Yeah, he failed to say that, "It was a good omen if it formed a single point...and a bad one if it had two. Ironically, one would think that three points will be the recipe for disaster, but it was actually much better than having one," yes, he nodded.

she put her hand down and grabbed a marshmellow. She stuck it on a stick and put it in the fire to toast it. She took it out of the fire. She started nomming on it. yummy. Ouch hot. but yummy.

As the Professor was speaking to Jake, Salander crept quietly behind her and sidled next to Lexi "Not too close!" he joked as he slipped his arm suddenly around her as if trying to pull her back from the flames. Not that she was, but with the way she's been looking at it, it would probably be best to air this side of caution yknw?

Then the Professor asks the question-- what does he know about Pyromancy? Hmmm "Well Professor, its when pretty girls gets a little too happy playing with fire...." he snickered, then added "But uhm I think its got something to do with Priestesses reading wood or bones or ashes or something after burning.... you know like how some would read tea leaves."

Simon looked back up at Professor Bishop as she started the class in ernest, listening to what she had to say and asked at the end of ehr dialogue. The captain thought about what he knew on the subject, hearing what the other students said as well and finally raising his hand in answer. "Sometimes objects are thrown into fire and meanings are derived by how the object in question is finally consumed by the flames."

Lexi gave a little EEP as Salander grabbed her. Nooooooo! He could NOT move her away from the BEAUFTIFUL flames. Giving him a little pout she said, "It's not like I was trying to burn stuff... yet." Snicker. Perhaps later... when no one was looking she could burn her parchment or something. Yesh. Definitely. Hehehe.

Snickering as Salander answered the Prof she turned and scrunched up her nose at him and giggled. Cute boy. Raising her hand she said, "The Athenians practiced Pyromancy in the Temple of Minerva." Little tidbit. Not sure if it was very useful though.

Selina kept her head down when Bishop addressed the class. The last thing the newfound Seer wanted was attention drawn to her during a divination class. But when Bishop asked about fire Selina froze. In all of her studying on divination since her revelation fire was a key in every piece of literature.

Raising her hand timidly Selina said, "It is an element. Some seers can draw energy from the element, channel if you will, to help fuel their visions. Ma'am."

Luin looked over at the professor, and then listened to what she said, Hmm...pyromancy, interesting topic. She did really like the last lesson, despite not her best subject. She shrugged and listened to some of the other answers given. She then raised her hand and said, "There is a type of pyromancy, named Capnomancy, divination by smoke; light, thin smoke that rose straight up was a good omen; otherwise, a bad one."

Emily had read up on pyromancy when she heard that was what the lesson would be about. She raised her hand to contribute.
"Well as the others have said, there are many variations of pyromancy, one of them is scapulimancy. This was done using the scapulae or shoulder blades of oxen, and turtle shells were also used. This form of pyromancy was particularly dominant in Ancient China during the Neolithic period, and during the Shang and Zhou dynasties. This practice was done by heating the bones/shell and interpreting the cracks that appeared in it."

Belle turned around and saw Jania, "Hey Jania!" she called and hugged her and unzipped her jacket a little bit to show her necklace she is wearing. She winked at her and smiled and gave the professor her attention. She had no idea about the study of divination by the fire, she was taking notes in her notebook hearing the other students responses.

Pyromancy. That sort of Divination seemed pretty cool, and Sierra even found herself studying the fire out of the corner of her eye, wondering just how it could be used to tell the future.

...and then a thought occurred to her. During her home-schooling years, her mother and sister had taught her a little about Pyromancy. Just some basic facts, though, of course. They'd never actually experimented with it. Anna, it seemed, was like Sierra--terrible at Divination. Sierra did raise her hand, though. She remembered another form of Pyromancy that hadn't been mentioned yet. "Botanomancy is another form of Pyromancy," she said. "It's when you burn plants."

As she said that, she eyed a nearby bush.

Kurumi slid down in her seat a bit not wanting to seem like a show off. Her mother had been a shrine maiden for many years and had actually specialized in Causinomancy. Mostly, her mother do so using the prayer papers written by the older priestesss and visitors to the shrine, but there had been other things as well. "Professor," Kurumi said slowly raising her hand. "Another form is Causinomancy which is divination by burning an item. My moth--- I've heard that you can perform this on various objects, but prayer papers or thing in which a person has written their wish or question are best."

Pyromancy? Oh, Helena knew something!

She raised her hand. "There are a few types of Pyromancy. Alomancy, Botanomancy, Capnomancy, Causinomancy, Daphnomancy, Sideromancy and..." uhhh what were the other ones? She suddenly turned red. "I can't remember the other ones." Uhhhh this was sooo embarrassing.

Jaina timidly raised her hand. "Is that like when the Celtics used to read the future by using the fire to talk to the gods and goddesses? I mean, I'm sure it was used by more than the Celtics, but I know a lot about that. Like they would have huge feasts and such and they would place a special wood on the fire and they would see images of what was to come from the god or goddess they requested it from." It sounded good and she looked at Belle sittign next to her to see if she sounded like she knew what was going on.
