Default Divination 1

Once you arrive to the Divination classroom, you enter to find what looks like a standard classroom setup. Desks arranged in the center of the room, facing Professor Bishop's desk and organized into pairs, look toward a charmed blackboard which currently simply says "Divination Lesson 1" in a graceful cursive. A good-sized bookshelf is against the right-hand wall and contains a large amount of small fabric-wrapped shapes.

Professor Bishop is seated at her desk, writing on something, the wooden box from her office moved to the desk in here, but she's still aware of the room. Don't think she isn't, just because she looks occupied with other things.

Feel free to take a seat, talk quietly, get your things ready and class will start shortly.

Feel free to post your character entering, speaking to each other or the professor. I'll check in when I can, so don't go overboard, and the lesson will begin tomorrow.

Dianna listened to every single answer to the Professor's question. She wasn't very good in Divination but she wasn't bad either.

"Um..Because it can give you great insight into your environment, your hopes and fears, and your potential and it is simple, but powerful. They say a strong energy has built up around this spread due to its use by so many people over the years... Also the cross itself is a free-standing cross and has been used extensively as grave markers." she said as she lowered her hand.

Emily's hand shot up again, she was eager to earn her house points.
"The Celtic cross spread is particularly popular because the layout of the cards is quite simple and is also powerful. The layout is best described in two sections, firstly there is the cross which is made up of the first six cards, then there is whats known as the staff which is made up of cards seven to ten.
The central part of the cross relates to what is most important to you at the time of the reading, the larger cross referrs to your movement from past to future - left to right, and your unconscious to your conscious mind - bottom to top. The staff which form a line on the right hand side represents your life."

Instinctively, she knew it was probably due to them having learned them before, at least in the case of the older students. But then, that was part of why she'd decided to teach it in the first lesson. The Tarot was one of the easier forms of Divination to grasp, and possibly one of the least frustrating. At least, less frustrating when one wasn't dealing with what seemed to be a mini-insurrection and invisible onlookers. Either way, she wasn't going to falter. "Good job," she replied to those who had answered, ading each one to the list that had already been started. "It seems you all remember quite a bit, and an extra point to those who decided to go into a bit of detail," she added. Not to make those who hadn't feel bad, but just to give a bit of a reward to those who had felt the need.

Renée gave another little special smile to the little Huffie who had been so amusing, as he had tried his hardest to continue to answer. It almost reminded her of Jared's insistence he was horrible at the subject, really. "Unfortunately, no. Chocolate Frog cards aren't actually part of the Tarot. But maybe you could try and set up your own oracular cards using them. There is a theory that any cards can be used for some form of Divination," she replied to him gently. It would certainly be an interesting project. It was something to think about, maybe later in the term.

Then Renée smiled at the other two who had tried to answer, but been just the slightest bit off. "That was definitely a good guess, Miss Draven, but surprisingly no. The Angel is not part of the Tarot, or at least the traditional Tarot. There might be some variations which might depcit something similar however," she replied to the young Slytherin, before glancing at Mr. Chosen with a bit of a grin. "I'd be interested to know what version of the Tarot would use regular animals, Mr. Chosen, but a point for trying to come up with a meaning. And yes, the Hanged Man is one of the Major Arcana. Representing sacrifice and looking at things from a different perspective." Something she wondered if the boy related to a tiny bit, when he wasn't trying to sleep through class.

And the Slytherin boy from the beginning of class seemed to have snapped out of his stupor, for which Renée had another thought about Jared and all his fans. At least he had an attempt at an answer, so she sent him a smile. "I believe you're thinking about the Hierophant, Mr. Salander, which was already mentioned," she replied. "As Mr. Hudson also said, it in fact has also been known as the Pope. Appropriate for a card that commonly represents education, religious beliefs, power and discipline." To introduce a few of the basic tenets. As with all of the cards and their symbolism, the interpretation was often more important than the surface meanings.

Renée then turned her attention to two of the young girls in the class, who had tried to come up with answers. She appreciated the attempts, as she had everyone else, and for that she gave them yet another smile. "The Page and sword are indeed part of the Tarot, but actually they're included in the Minor Arcana. Swords are one of the four suits, and the Page is one of the four court cards. They do have meanings, however, as every card in the Tarot does." Well, there were four pages in a deck, but the concept still stood. And in fact Miss Molina had included that in her explanation, noting that it was a suit. She'd just been a bit late in her answer.

Text Cut: Huffies at war

And then she had the fun of dealing with Jake and Treyen, yet again. Or, actually, simply continuing their earlier battle. Renée had the feeling Treyen was simply trying to get on her case yet again, especially with the answer he'd given to contribute to the discussion, but she wasn't about to let it get to her. Not right now, and not when she'd hoped he had come to the conclusion it was better to simply go along with things than fight them. Of course, she wasn't about to let his war of words with Jake continue much longer either, as it could get distracting to the others if it kept going. "Jake, the Tarot is not intended to be used as a way of insulting people," she said calmly, for the moment ignoring Treyen's comment about the arrogance of making new cards even though it had been addressed to her. People created their own forms of oracular cards all the time, so the egotism wasn't really the point. However, she did raise an eyebrow slightly at his following response. That was the strike she'd been waiting for. "Yes. The Emperor is part of the Major Arcana. And in fact one interpretation of it can be the attempt to control the uncontrollable, or the need to accept that some things are not worth controlling. It also represents the masculine principle, balanced against the feminine principle represented by the Empress, as well as stability," she responded, before finally continuing her path toward the bookshelf an picking up one of the wrapped items that had been lying there, flicking her wand to finish off the list that had begun.

Listening quietly and yet intently, at the professor's interesting lecture, Elle shot her hand up the moment she asked a question.

"In the Celtic Christian world it was put together with the Christian cross and this design was often used for high crosses – a free-standing cross from stone. It is often used for funerary purposes and possessed a great deal of energy, plus magic. The Celtic Cross was and is used to express everyone's white pride," She answered.

Lucy was listening in the class very attentively as she was really interested to learn about the cards. She didn't really like them but she lovely to know a bit more about them. As the class was on professor asked a question to the class. Lucy knew this one but she was nervous, she didn't want to say anything wrong in the class. but then she decided to tell so she raised her hand and said "Professor, the most common spread happens to be the Celtic Cross, because it's the oldest and most popular pattern for reading the tarot, they are simple, but powerful. A strong energy has built up around this spread due to its use by so many people over the years." she said and paused to know what professor had to tell on that.

Helena raised her hand. "There are ten cards used, with five arranged in a cross and four placed vertically beside the cross and another one is placed horizontally across the central cards of the cross," she said, barely breathing, remembering something she read a few days ago from a book. "Also, each card has a different meaning."

Thank goodness for books. Bennet was so much better in subjects that weren't heavy in spell work. He was only average in those subjects, but in classes that allowed for a student to do reading before class and truly understand concepts, Bennet was a star. Divination happened to be one such subject, which was why he enjoyed it so much. And why he bothered to actually read ahead of time. Although, this question required more thought than regurgitation.

Raising his hand, Bennet offered, "Perhaps this spread is so popular because it mirrors the duality of life - the masculine and feminine. The circle represents the feminine, while the staff represents the masculine, and the unity of the two in one spread represents the balance of the human mind and experience. Such duality is a belief of many cultures, which would explain why many Tarot users would appreciate a spread that conveys that tenet.

"On another note, the vast number of cards in the spread probably makes it easier for a beginner because it gives them more information to aid in the interpretation, as opposed to smaller spread readings which require more intuitive familiarity with the context and meaning of each card, intuition that a beginner might not yet have developed."

Kurumi pondered the thought for a moment. There had to be some difference between the Celtic Cross and the cross she had seen all the time on Catholic churches. The biggest difference was that circle in the center, that surely had to be the key. "Professor, I've read in some books that what makes the Celtic Cross special and unique from the one that is used in Christianity is the circle. I believe that it means eternity that emphasizes the endlessness of God’s love or it could represent a halo and therefore the unending mystery of how through the crucifixion and resurrection Christ continues to offer the hope of salvation to the faithful throughout all time." Kurumi paused, she wasn't really sure what this had to do with Divination other than the circle was invoking divine powers and intervention. "Not only that, but it is much older than the Christian cross and therefore evokes a much deeper and ancient magic. So,perhaps in using this particular spreed we are tapping into much more ancient forms of Divination...that are more powerful?"

Simon couldn't believe he had got another one wrong, he nodded whilest the Professor talked to him and smiled a little smile at least she wasn't shouting at him, he was trying his hardest it was just he didn't know much about this subject.

Simon then heard the next question and put his hand up. "The Celtic Cross is a basket ball team." Simon had no clue what so ever about this one so he just guest again. "Are all them people who can see it to the future." Simon thought it would be unfair if they could.

Oh The Celtic Cross Tarot spread? Freya raised her hand "Because The Celtic Cross Tarot spread is the most simple and the easiest to get the results you want for the most questions, whether it be a love query or life direction the Celtic Cross has the when, where, and why to all." she said.

Satine wrote notes with everyone's answer and then shot her hand up, "Professor, would it also be because it's one of the most recognized because it's so old." she said the question more as a statement but she still wasn't sure if that was true.

Parke flipped through his notes once again. Not that they had a direct answer to the professor's question. He hated questions like this. There was no factual answer. He read through is notes one last time before hesitating slightly, and then raising his hand. "I'm assuming its popularity has to do with the spread's ability to cover many different angles or aspects of a given situation in great detail. It gives the asker, for lack of a better term, a complete analysis of his or her situation based on past events, self imposed restrictions, the asker's environment, etc and details possible outcomes." Of course he was just making assumptions based upon what he'd read. Who knew what was actually correct.

Spreads, for the life of her, Emmaleigh couldn't remember if they had talked about them in class last term, or if her knowledge came from her outside reading. She didn't know why the celtic cross spread was so popular, but she did know a little about it. She raised her hand before beginning. "Could it be popular because the spread is useful for general readings about the past and future and stuff, like the three card spread, and because it can be used for specific questions as well. Or maybe because it can be modified a little bit." She added

Violet smiled and did a little cheery dance for herself, by keeping her arms close to her and shaking them a little like she had maracas in her hands. She giggled to herself a little bit after she had done so and went back to paying attention. Violet then finished writing the other names of the Tarot Cards completing her list. Then she put her pointer finger on her chin and began to think about what the Professor was asking.

"Now that we've gotten that established, why don't we get into a bit about the spreads, as Mr. Owlwraith brought up earlier. He mentioned a few of them, but perhaps we could go into a bit more about the differences between them. The most common spread happens to be the Celtic Cross. Who wants to tell the class why that is?" A bit more discussion, and then maybe it would be time to start the practical portion of the lesson.
"Never said it was, Professor, with all due respect," Jake shrugged. It had been TREYEN who brought up that Jake was actually referring to somebody, and Jake never said that the card was directed at Treyen.

Even if he did think it.

Oooh, what had she just picked up? Something to throw at Treyen? Jake could help with that.

Jake raised his hand. "No idea, but hey, worth a shot, right? Maybe because the position of the cards means something? Like... up, down, left, right and middle... If... that's what the Celtic Cross thing is. But yeah, so the different places could mean past, present or future. And then maybe what could have happened, uhhh... telling what someone thinks of something, or how they would approach a situation?"

Maybe?

Luin quickly wrote down all of the cards in the major arcana on her parchment and then wrote down "Celtic Cross". She though of the question for a bit and then raised her hand, "The Celtic Cross spread has survived so long and is so popular because the layout of the cards is simple, but powerful. It's a good one to use when you have a specific question that needs to be answered, because it takes you, step by step, through all the different aspects of the situation."

Representing sacrifice and looking at things from a different perspective." Something she wondered if the boy related to a tiny bit, when he wasn't trying to sleep through class.

Weelll....Legend honestly had no clue, why it would use regular animals in tarot cards. He didn't even understand the cards! "Maybe they were just trying to throw people off ma'am." Wait. The Hanged man was actually one of them? SCORE. Legend grinned, and sat up a bit straighter. Maybe he could learn to like this class?

Alright Celtic Cross? Because the people who created it were Irish! Or something. Legend raised his hand. "Maybe...the other spreads were complicated and this one was the simplest? Cause...you know...it's just a cross." That made sense right?

Renée nodded as a few of the students responded related to the actualy Celtic cross, that she imagined coudl be seen anywhere in the general vicintiy of Hogwarts, or in Ireland as well. It wasn't quite what she'd been after with her question, but it had posed an interesting idea. "Yes, traditional Celtic crosses are used in those ways, but the spread of the same name is just symbolic. Not necessarily related to religion, or ideologies such as Nazism. Perhaps there is a bit of simplicity in the spread, however, like Miss Hollingberry mentioned, as it's one of the spreads that provides the most information," she said with a nod toward Mr. Owlwraith. "Inspiration could be involved as well, although I'd imagine you wouldn't want every reading you did to symbolize death," she concluded with a smile. Even as a metaphor, most people preferred not to consider death.

The central part of the cross relates to what is most important to you at the time of the reading, the larger cross referrs to your movement from past to future - left to right, and your unconscious to your conscious mind - bottom to top. The staff which form a line on the right hand side represents your life."

After addressing the answers about the cross, Renée turned to the rest of the students offering answers. It helped knowing people did the reading, even if their answers were all a bit different. Individuality was nice too. She nodded, before setting the fabric wrapped object down on her desk to walk a bit again. "The Celtic cross spread in fact is rather old, and because of that, powerful. Most spreads contain their own power, however, just like the cards themselves hold power. Information," she said, before turning fully back to the class. "And most likely that is because it uses more cards, so more details are provided, instead of needing the interpretation to be quite as thorough. Other spreads, like the three-card spread Miss Swynford mentioned, are just as useful, but require a bit more work to understand what they tell you.” And at that point she thought it would be good to go into the meanings, and the spread itself, but it seemed first she had some other answers to deal with.

Simon then heard the next question and put his hand up. "The Celtic Cross is a basket ball team." Simon had no clue what so ever about this one so he just guest again. "Are all them people who can see it to the future." Simon thought it would be unfair if they could.
Sending another glance to Simon as he’d tried his hardest yet again, Renée fought to not laugh again. She didn’t want to embarrass the Hufflepuff, even as she had the thought that it was possible he was doing this to get a laugh out of her, or the rest of the class. Either way, she managed it without a giggle, even though it was tough going. “That is entirely possible, given the prevalence of minor sports teams in existence,” she responded, a hint of amusement still in her voice. Especially if she considered old teams from back in the States, but she wanted to get back to his answer. “I’d hope for the other teams’ sakes they aren’t. That would make it a bit difficult. But let’s get back to Divination.” The mythical basketball team would likely be impossible to beat. But they needed to get back on topic.

First, it seemed there was going to need to be a bit more progress gained regarding whatever the deal was with Jake and Treyen. Renée turned to look at the older Hufflepuff as he denied the intention towards his housemate and smiled a little, before glancing at Treyen for a moment. “You may not have said it, but we both know you meant it that way. Whether toward him or not,” she said gently. She hadn’t actually known, as class was definitely not the time to be getting into that, but it wasn’t that hard to figure out. But she nodded as he went on to attempt an answer to the question at hand. “Certainly. The placement of each card has just as much meaning as the card itself, although that is true of any spread. Not specific to the Celtic cross spread, and you’ll find more cards are involved than just what you mentioned.” And at that, she returned to lean against her desk, near the package she’d retrieved from the shelf. Hopefully they could get back on track.

A wry smile crept onto Renée’s face as she noticed how Mr. Chosen had perked up, though. Odds were it was over being told he’d guessed correct, but his response had been fascinating as well. “Perhaps. Maybe you could look into that sometime,” she replied, reaching over and picking up the object before addressing his attempt at an answer regarding the spread. “Actually, you’d find that both correct and incorrect. Since the spread involves more cards than most, some people might find it more complex. But as was also mentioned, it provides a clearer answer to the question that is asked, since there are more details filled in.” Which seemed a good time to go into more detail herself, and she flicked her wand yet again toward the chalkboard as she thought about how to continue.

“Well, continuing with the Celtic cross spread, placement is important, as while each card obviously had internal symbolism with it, where it is in the spread affects the reading as well.” And a depiction of the layout appeared on the board, as well as a listing of what each card signified.

SPOILER!!: chalkboard

1. the significator
2. the question, conditions surrounding it
3. conscious awareness
4. unconscious knowledge/influences
5. past events/influences
6. future
7. yourself, in relation to the question
8. family/friends
9. hopes and fears
10. probable outcome

“Keep in mind that there are actually quite a few different adaptations, so the cards could switch around. In general, they’ll keep the meanings, though, the cards just move around a little. Not to mention you can find variations that add an eleventh card, or even more,” she added, fingering the fabric in her hand before placing the package down on the desk yet again and letting it open to reveal a deck. “In that way, spreads like the three-card spread can be seen as easier. Not only is the number of cards established, but their meanings are pretty static. Past, present, future.” Which was why when she let them all go try to do readings, in a bit, she’d let them choose what spread they wanted to use. She had one last question for them, though, and she looked up again while running a finger delicately acroos the top of the deck of cards now on her desk. “The Celtic cross spread has one card that isn’t included in most other spreads, but can sometimes be considered one of the more important ones in a reading. That would be card number one, or the significator. Does anyone want to give me an answer as to what significance that card holds?”

ooc: last question, then things'll change up a little bit. ; )

Preston dutifully and very carefully copied the chalkboard down into his spiral notebook. He wanted to make sure it was as near as an exact replica he could make of it so he could use it when he needed it, and he was positive he'd need it.

Erasing lines and words here and there when something didn't look quite right to his standards. Finally, done writing the last of what each card signified, Preston laid his pencil down on top of his notebook and listened carefully to Professor Bishop.

Jake. Was. Not. Amused.

He STARED up at Bishop.

REALLY? She was telling him what he'd said? Well... she was right but that was IRRELEVANT.

So now he was disillusioned and, more importantly, SO LOST. Jake didn't know the answers, so he just... sat there. Doodling.

Listening... learning...

Simon couldn't believe that he had got another question wrong. "Professor I'm really sorry, I am trying my hardest." Simon sighed. "I ain't doing it on purpose, honestly I ain't." Simon hoped that the Professor would believe him, he had this feeling that she was thinking he was doing it on purpose.

Simon want to answer but at the same time he didn't he was sure he would get it wrong. "Professor I'm rubbish at Divinations." Simon tried to think of what the card ment. "Is it that it is the best, it's the most important one."

Kurumi flew to her notes and began copying down what Professor Bishop was saying along with the diagram on the board. The significator? Kurumi had thought that she had read that as having another meaning. "Professor," Kurumi asked with her hand raised. "I thought that the card in position number 1 represented the present. It shows the general tone of whatever the one seeking interpretation is asking about."

For the first time ever, Evelyn was lost.

So so lost.

And it had nothing to do with the fact that she was not paying attention!

...

Blinking, the Slytherin exhaled a long breath, trying to wrap her head around what they were talking about now. Significator...card...one...thing...question. Alright. What is the significance of the significator? Oh now that almost just lost her right there again. "It's significant because..." Losing her train of thought. Ugh. "...it...it's like the prologue to the whole story. I think."

Hmm, right?

Eh?

Not only is the number of cards established, but their meanings are pretty static. Past, present, future.” Which was why when she let them all go try to do readings, in a bit, she’d let them choose what spread they wanted to use. She had one last question for them, though, and she looked up again while running a finger delicately acroos the top of the deck of cards now on her desk. “The Celtic cross spread has one card that isn’t included in most other spreads, but can sometimes be considered one of the more important ones in a reading. That would be card number one, or the significator. Does anyone want to give me an answer as to what significance that card holds?”[/COLOR]

Eino raised his hand. "Professor, the significator indicates who are in the present right? That would, naturally, affect the outcome of our future." It made sense. The person you are will determine the choices you make, and those choices would lead to a certain future. "However, Divination is the study of the future, so a present substance might not always be taken into consideration. By removing the significator one is able to read the future as, well, fate. Something that just happens, that it is destined to be. By including the significator the future would be subjective, and possibly change."
