Because the Headmaster has no use for a second office, he has re-purposed this room for an entirely different use. The room is larger than it should be; the fact that Tate reduced a wall into an adjoining room is obvious by the fact that his ‘office’ has two doors along the same long wall. Rather than leaving an empty office or reinventing the standard dueling area, the room now serves as a training facility for those with an interest in Defense and Defense related careers: Aurors, Hit Wizards, and the International Task Force (among others).
The two windows in the room face out over an inner courtyard and let in tree-filtered light throughout the day. Beside one such window, floor-to-ceiling bookshelves have been stuffed full of countless Defense texts. The titles range from ancient tomes in spidery indecipherable scripts to glossy hardcovers featuring some of the premiere Defensive authors of the day. The long table is conducive for transcribing notes from the various books, but there are also a few deep chairs pushed together for general reading or quiet conversation. There is a sign posted on the bookshelf.

Along the opposite wall, leading from the far door halfway to the window, Tate has set up various pieces of exercise equipment, intending for those interested in pursuing a Defensive career to develop themselves physically as well as mentally. A punching bag is suspended from the ceiling in the corner, sitting beside a stand of free weights and other odds and ends, mats and exercise balls and the like. Stretching along the remainder of the space to the window is an enormous climbing wall, complete with hand and foot holds all the way up to the ceiling. There are no ropes, but the floor is generously cushioned with a charm.
Between the two windows sit a series of padded dummies, perfect for any dueling practice needed for class or just to be used in the process of learning new spells. Drag one or two out and practice. Either of the windows onto the courtyard may be opened and, weather permitting, training can extend into this open space. Try not to kill and trees or squirrels in the process.

Jackie walks along the corrinder twirling her hair around her fingers. She finds a room that says DEFENSE TRAINING ROOM. Hmm, interesting she looks around and sees books about defense against the dark arts. She looks through the titles and finds an interesting looking one Jinxes for the Jinxed. She would have been lying if she said that she wasn't a little bit nervous. She had not duelled in a long while and DEFINITELY had not duelled a boy. Especially not one she liked.
Her eyes scanned the area and landed on... A PUNCHING BAG?! Oh, SCORE! Making sure her wand was safe in it's holster she made her way there and took up a fighting stance. With a little smirk she punched the bag as hard as she could, giggling as it swung out away from her. Oh that was fun! Without warning she began to swing frantically at the bag working out aggression. Ahhh! Now where was that boy?

Looking down she realized she didn't have her robes on. Oopsies. It always took her a while before she got back into the habit of wearin them anywhere aside from class. Shrugging to herself she smiled back up at Jim and returned his wave.

Anyway, I was flailing about trying to scare him. Saying I was being attacked by the Grindylows and he tried to SAVE me. So he got a knee to the face," she said in an amused tone.

Okay... she was a little rusty. So what. As soon as the last spell left her wand she flicked her shield up and held it strong as she glided to the right as he moved left, the stinging hexes bouncing off of her shield as she moved.
Dropping her shield only long enough to cast a few rapid fire stining hexes of her own, still muttering incantations, she flicked her wand upward and lunged far right as she caught the last blast of light leave his wand. Grazing the side of her shield she felt the breeze of it. Grrrr.
Righting herself she began to slow, deliberate, graceful glide as she brought her wand down over and over as she cast an onslaught of stunners followed by a few jelly legs jinxes, all while she moved wide around him, aiming high, mid, low, high, mid, low. Harder to shield and dodge. "Wish we had some music to listen to," she commented with a grin, eyes still locked on the boy, shield back in place.

Her jaw clenched and her brow pulled together as he didn't even cast back at her. "Depends on whether you can sing without making cruppies howl," she said as she focused on his weaknesses... vulnerabilities. If he had any. Sigh. Keeping up the side steps and little glides she tried to lunge around him. No such luck. Hmmm. She had an idea as she moved them around so that his back was to the stretch bookshelf. Bringing her wand around in a fluid motion she cast as she said, "Relashio" as quietly as she could. Hopefully the flash of light would disorient him while she made her move. Fixing her wand on the bookshelf behind him she quickly swished and flicked and levitate a LARGE tome and sent it barrelling toward Jim's head before shouting, "Densaugeo." In her haste to move she left her shield down... rookie mistake...

Jimmy wasn't sure he'd seen a pumpkin with antlers before so that'd be interesting.
Cross steps the other way brought him around to cast a few non verbal stingers and a nice loud "Stupefy!"

"ARRRRGH!" she shouted... in a muffled tone as a bloody PUMPKIN appeared around her head. No time to flail, Lexi. NO. She felt her hair moved about as antlers grew through the pumpkin shell. Falling hard and fast her pumpkin head hit the mat behind her and broke leaving guts and goop around. "YOU GOT THAT IN MY HAIR!" she shouted, incensed. Flicking her wand up to cast a shield as she shook her head around a little bit to regain her composure she got a determined look in her eyes.
Rolling to the right she came up on her feet and began to slice her wand through the air shouting the incantations for the stinging hex, bat- bogey hex, trip jinx, and stunner... all in rapid fire, all aimed at his face. Stupid Jimmy got goop in her hair.
"The antlers are a nice touch, you have to teach me how to do that... after I hex your face off," she said through clenched teeth as she brought her reinforced shield up and began to pace again.

Salander made his way towards the DADA training room, eager to try out the punching bag that was said to be hanging in the far corner. As he walks into the room the duelling caught his attention. "Jimmy?" he said, instantly recognizing his Ravenclaw friend.
He shifts his eyes at the other dueller. It was Lexi. With antlers on her head.
Ok now thats something you dont see everyday.
He sidesteps against the wall, keeping his eyes on the action. Who knows if he'd pick up a trick (or ten).....

Jim had time to wish that he had a camera so he could take a snap for the yearbook and then Lexi was on the ground and yelling.
"Technically, you're the one who broke the pumpkin, so. You got it in your own hair. Which is still very pretty by the way." Grin.
Woahhh. His eyes widened as a barrage of spells came his way, the stinging hex managing to graze past his shoulder before he had a shield up to catch the rest. It was like being in a steel drum that someone was beating on with a hammer, and each one, as they hit his shield, drove Jim back a step and he braced himself.
Actually that was pretty impressive.

Woahhh. His eyes widened as a barrage of spells came his way, the stinging hex managing to graze past his shoulder before he had a shield up to catch the rest. It was like being in a steel drum that someone was beating on with a hammer, and each one, as they hit his shield, drove Jim back a step and he braced himself.
Actually that was pretty impressive.
"If you hang shiny things from them antlers, maybe you could convince a bird to build a nest." He remarked, "But yeah, I guess I could show you." Pauuuuse. "Heh. You could practice on Sal."
And then they could butt heads. Or antlers, like literally.
He tilted his head at Jimmy just as the Lexi's spell brushed past the Ravenclaw's shoulders. Ooops.
Seemed like the Great Interrupter struck again.
But true to form Jimmy rebounded back, in more ways than one. Salander was chuckling at his jokes until he said she could use the Slytherin lad as target practice. "Heyyyyy focus you two. Leave the spectators out of this." he said pretending to pout.
Speaking of which, whats a spectators' event with a side of profit?

Salander's head spun quickly at the voice "Headmaster!" he blurted out. Really why was he so surprised to see him here? He was after all the DADA Professor as well.
And did he just ask about "What book?" he mumbled confused. There are books in the gym?

UNnecessary birds! Jim conjured a worm and the birds got distracted and started fighting over it. He ignored them and grinned at Lexi.
"Thats true." He agreed. "Effective ain't it?" Grin.
"They envy us do they?" Hah. If she said so. James cared not. He eyed the birds which were trying to peck themselves into non-existance over the worm. No early birds there.
"Tutor?" Snort. "I don't really do that sort of thing. I'll show you but if you can't figure it out, you're on your own. Besides, what makes you think I'm good enough with non-verbals to go teachin' someone else?"

Really... just tossing books around willy nilly? He ought to make them visit the library to confess to Madame Donovan.
"Shall we begin again? I'll observe this time." He eyed the pumpkin goop warily before skirting the mess and taking a seat on a windowsill.

He shrugged. What did being at Hogwarts for only a year have to do with it? It wasn't like there'd been all that much focus on learning non-verbals last year. Jim didn't say anything though. Rock and a hard place. Headmaster didn't need to know that he could do stuff.
"Nah. You can keep them on for a while." Jim decided. "Maybe I don't know the counter-jinx." Grin. Maybe.
Well. He did but he had no intention of showing it.
He glanced at Tate.
Respect the space blah blah. Well Jim hadn't been the one to throw a book. If that was just about the book anyway.

... darn. He turned his attention to Lexi and bowed and saluted like it was second nature. No need for paces, already far enough away.
"Stupefy!" He made sure to enunciate loud and clear, and his wand movements were really obvious. No chance that Lexi couldn't block that right? Even if it was pretty bloody strong. Still. She'd block it. He had faith.
