There was a brisk snap to the air in the unheated classroom as Tate set himself up at the desk in the front of the room and tightened the scarf still tied around his neck. Once the fire in the corner did its job, the room would be much more comfortable, and he would be able to remove the scarf and get his fingers working normally again.
The fireplace was surely enchanted, because it wasn't long before feeling returned to his hands and the room felt almost cheery with warmth. Almost. It was still a little nippy, but would surely warm through the class period. Tate flicked his wand at the door, letting it swing open to admit students to Defense Against the Dark Arts.
Neptune cast a glance Jim's way. "Someone's chatty today," she casually ventured.
Well. They were. She smiled down at her desk, then leaned into Jake, and scribbled down a note to find the article about muggle super heroes. Sounded interesting to her.
She casually threw up a hand, "Mr. Slytherin, I believe, was of the Darker sort." Neptune yawned. Fading ideals was the same as having standards. Pfff.

Name a Dark Wizard. Well, there were loads worth mentioning, but Kurumi tried to search her brain for one that wasn't among the obvious bunch. "There is Herpo the Foul," Kurumi offered after her hand had shot up in the air. "He is one of the earliest known Dark Wizards."

Sierra found herself nodding along as the headmaster answered her questions, oddly, with more questions. In so many ways, though, his questions answered all of hers--for the time being. It sort of made her believe that at some point, everything would just fall into place for her, and all these crazy-looking puzzle pieces she'd been dealing with would soon fit together and make sense.
...hopefully. Maybe it was just Tate's pep talk that made her feel that way, though.

...and just like that, the headmaster suddenly became one of Sierra's favorite professors! Yes, the muggle talk--as important as it did seem--had definitely been discussed in all the other classes, too. Let's learn some magic now!
"Emeric the Evil," she said, her hand raised high in the air. Now this was a topic she had loads to say about! The headmaster hadn't said to tell anything other than a name, so for now, that's all Sierra said.

Luin listened to the conversation about the statute of secrecy and decided not to say anything on that at the moment. Other had much more strong opinions about it thatn she did. She wrote down the topic on her parchment and thought on the question for a bit. It was strangely easy, which was quite odd once she thought about it. She raised her hand, "There was Gellert Grindelwald, professor." she sat back in her seat then, and looked around as everyone else mentioned others.

"Depends. My own tail is more important to me than that of some random muggle." And to plenty of girls too, who Jim was quite sure would prefer he escaped any situation with his pretty unscathed. "Besides, most of the people in here wouldn't be allowed to intervene because of an entirely different law." Yeah. Underage magic. Jim glanced briefly to his right at Marie.

Then as Tate spoke again she nodded her head. THANK YOU! No more Muggle statute talk. Raising her hand she said, "Bellatrix Lestrange." Definitely a Dark witch.
"I have no intention of getting in the way of a dark witch or wizard, and if they're after a muggle -or anyone or anything that isn't me- then thats the perfect chance for me to escape." He grinned. Yes. She believed wholeheartedly that muggles didn't need their protection. They weren't an infant or some creatures, they were humans just like wizards, just without magic.
Some of the responses were really just...making her a little peeved, and she didn't bother responding to any of it cause it wouldn't do anything but make her more peeved. So to say that she was more than glad that Tate changed the subject was an understatement.
Hmm. Dark wizards. She could think of a few, most that had already been named, and for obvious reasons one name stuck out more than others. Eyes flicking to Jake, she turned them back on Tate and nodded her head in agreement. Yea. That dude. He knew who they were talking about.

From Muggles to Dark Wizards. Weird topic change, that.
Vashti was silent for a moment to think of a Dark Wizard - or Witch - who hadn't already been mentioned. After a couple seconds, she raised her hand. "Peter Pettigrew," she answered.

Dark Wizards? well, Lafay immediately jumped to minds, but that wouldn't be wise to say. So she thought a minute, trying to think of one that hadn't already been said. Tentatively she raised her hand, "That werewolf guy, Greyhound, or Greyback or something."

Mmhmm, something about muggles.
Having decided not to answer, since she'd just go on and on about her opinion on the matter, the Slytherin instead wrote down a few random things in her notebook as she kept an open ear on the discussion. It was mostly a to-do list though.
Though the next question, she was a little slow in answering too. Mostly because people kept saying the dark wizard she kept thinking. Gah! "What about that Bullock author..." she said after raising her hand. Wrote that one book. Yea..that one.

Eino tried to think of a few, or any recollections he might have from events in the latest issues of the Daily Prophet, but he couldn't remember anything of the sort, thankfully. He then raised his hand. "Professor, Witch of Endor was known to practice Dark Arts, such as conjuring dead people. She doesn't have a recorded name, but she is one of the most ancient witches recorded to have explored deaths and ghosts."
He gathered himself before continuing. "I want to focus our lesson today on Dark Wizards. Annabelle raised her hand for the professor. "I know a that they have talked about Lord Voldemort and i know of Gellert Grindelwald from my grandmother." She was excited for the DADA lesson.

Dark wizards.
This was something Marie knew a little bit about since her family was full of them.. yes she did. Hand in the air she answered. "Sir there was Igor Karkaroff." Sure he changed later on but he had been a death eater.
She didn't miss the look she got from James either. What had she done now to get a look? She was being nice today. No looks needed Jimmy.
Yeah, she totally wasn't thinking that she had missed his birthday. She would so be kicking herself later though when she did remember.

Kurumi’s mind was racing again as everything that had happened so far this term came back in a giant whirl. She felt dizzy and her raised hand dropped to her desk and lay there. All this discussion was a bit too much for her to handle.
"I believe that some would say that the period of transition, of getting accustomed to that which we do not know, would be worth the discomfort. All change is uncomfortable." He shrugged. It was more than that little bit of discomfort that concerned him, but it shouldn't be a reason not to change in some situations.

Tate let the last few students argue amongst themselves, although he found it was interesting to see which side each student landed in the argument. There really wasn't a black or white position in this debate, regardless of what anyone thought, and they'd covered the entire spectrum in class already.
He could call it a day, really. If he wanted.

Quite a horrible book she heard.
Tate gave her a wrinkled-brow-quizzical-look. "Not sure who you mean. Let me know if you think of her name, and we might be able to add her to the list."
He gestured at the list on the board and gave them all a moment to study it before turning back to the class. "Each of these people, for one reason or another, was deemed Dark by one of your classmates, but they were all very different in what they did and how they interacted with the Dark Arts. Jaina raised her hand. "Um, Professor, I don't know much about any of them, but I heard Slytherin didn't like muggles and muggle borns. Would that be a trait they all had?"
Lexi looked over the list for a moment... Well the Death Eaters on the list were pretty obvious. Pureblood maniacs... Muggle haters.
"I am not sure about everyone on that list, but a fair few of them were known Death Eaters that believed that anything other than a pureblood witch or wizard was wrong," she said with a scowl. Funny. Some of them (if not all of them) were half blood or less. Filthy hypocrites.

As a list of dark wizards was presented to them, Sierra finally made a move to sit up a bit straighter to get a better view of the board. She had, of course, been slouching since the conversation in the beginning of class turned, once again, to witches and wizards assisting muggles.
Now, though, the topic was on something she was a little more familiar with, so she narrowed her eyes in thought as she studied the list of people on the board. Something they all had in common besides the fact that they were all known to be dark? Hmm...
"Well," she said, raising her hand, "one thing that really stands out to me is that they all had seemed to have some sort of cause they stood for. There was something they really wanted or really took pride in that caused them to act the way they did." Or, so it seemed, at least. For all Sierra knew, one or all of them could have just enjoyed being evil for the pure fun of it.
"Jake," Tate glowered at the boy. Constantly. Pushing. Lines. "Manners. I won't remind you again."
Neptune's mouth fell open into a comical O of SHOCK. "Jacob! Are you misbehaving in class? Do try to keep it together." Giggle. She reached over and needlessly fussed with his collar.
Theeeeennnnn she raised her hand, again with the casual, this is so easy air. "Superiority complexes? They had egos that went both deep and wide."

Arya considered the list with a frown and narrowed eyes. Her hand rising slowly, but eyes never meeting headmasters. "They all fear death....at least the one's I'm familiar with fear death. Either by another wizard, or their own mortality." How was it that she was only now realizing this? Hm.

"She means Owle Bullock, author of Secrets of the Darkest Arts." His dad had owned that,Jim reflected, and then sold it for a small fortune on to some guy who'd wanted to remain anonymous.
Glancing at the list and then at Neptune as if daring she comment about him giving answers again his hand went up. "Some of them had the deathstick in common."

Kurumi nodded at what Professor Tate was saying. It didn't seem like his line of thinking was that different from what Mr. Ikenna had said in his office. "So, Professor Tate. Would you agree with the statement that our greatest strength as a human race is our ability to acknowledge our differences, our greatest weakness is our failure to embrace them?"
Kurumi then went to her parchment to write down the list that was being made on the board.
They were all mean people? Well, that Severus Snape character had only seemed to have been a bad person, but he had really been perhaps the most fantastic person in the whole Harry Potter era. "All of them studied and practiced the Dark Arts," Kurumi said with her hand raised - kind of stating the obvious.
