There was a brisk snap to the air in the unheated classroom as Tate set himself up at the desk in the front of the room and tightened the scarf still tied around his neck. Once the fire in the corner did its job, the room would be much more comfortable, and he would be able to remove the scarf and get his fingers working normally again.
The fireplace was surely enchanted, because it wasn't long before feeling returned to his hands and the room felt almost cheery with warmth. Almost. It was still a little nippy, but would surely warm through the class period. Tate flicked his wand at the door, letting it swing open to admit students to Defense Against the Dark Arts.
[He was surprised when it was over. Most classes rushed through content and then had a practical aspect. Not this one. Here, his mind was still spinning and his head felt a little bit like it was water logged. Which was probably the reason he was slow in packing up his things; a slow mind was a slow body.
When he finished, he hoisted his bag onto his shoulder and gave Tate a small smile and bow of his head. "You've given us a lot to think on, Headmaster. Thank you." It didn't really matter there was no 'practical' component; the thinking and the discussions had been the active part.
With a final bow of his head, he slipped out of the room and joined Arya in the hall.

"You had hoped to play a little game here today, Tate? And which game would that be - two truths and a lie?"
Gevrik disillusioned himself as he spoke up assertively from the back of the room. He was standing just near the door - leaving enough space for students to get by, but not enough space for anyone else - with his arms crossed over his chest and his legs firmly locked in place.
His ever-intense eyes were fixated on the 'Headmaster.'
"Or is it that game where you corrupt young minds with your biased, false history?"

At the dismissal, Simon finished up his notes before packing up his parchments and quill into his bag. Getting up into his feet, the Gryffindor slipped the bag onto his shoulder and moved to leave as well, his gaze raising from the table as he did so. However he was stopped in his tracks when a man suddenly disallusioned himself, the form becoming the school's ministry guest. At the man's words he realized he probably meant to speak to the headmaster alone so the sixth year proceeded towards the door, vaguely curious as to what was up.
"Thank you Headmaster Tate, great les-"
*Picking up his bag he saw Gevrik appear out of nowhere. Hearing what he said Matty frowned. He liked Headmaster Tate and the way Gevrik was talking to him made him a little mad. False history? What was he talking about? He was now not sure if he was to leave or sit back down.*

"Mister Gevrik," Tate nodded at the man. "Which part did you object to? My definition of the Dark Arts? The history of Salazar Slytherin? The precious Knights?"
Honestly, he didn't care. His hands were tied so tightly with all these curriculum changes in place, and he'd gone with his gut and taught what he thought the students needed.
"Check the history books. I only taught the truth. I'm not afraid... are you?"

Jim looked up from his copy of The Quibbler and looked between that Ministry dude and the headmaster.
Uh huh.
Well.
Jim wasn't gonna move until that dude was gone or ... at least wasn't blocking the door so much. Besides, the seventeen year old was intrigued by the man's words.

The Slytherin lad stayed quiet for a great deal of the lesson, having felt in, almost equal parts in agreement and conflicted about his House founder's ideology and comparing them to his own. The discussion drifted towards the Knights of Walpurgis-- a group Salander has never heard off until they were linked to the Death Eaters. And then one Gryffindor mentioned something about a Cult.
.... that piqued his interest.
As he packed up his things a smirk formed on his face. What happened to the rest of the Knights of Walpurgis? They probably formed a rock band or invented a festival with lots of eating and drinking. They certainly got the unbeatable name branding down pat.
He turned and nodded towards the Professor "Great class Headmaster. Very informative. Thanks a lot! "

... and just as he made his way for the door, the Garlicman appears out of thin air.
Seeing that was both cool and terrifying at the same time.
Salander froze at the spot where he stood, shifting his eyes between Tate and Gevrik. Wait? Lying? Whose lying? Did they just spend all that time listening to a whole bunch of misinformation campaign? Or did this guy suddenly show up for a cover-up? Its not like that hasnt happened before.....

The thing about just stepping out into the hallway, was that you could still hear what was going on in the room. And the thing about new staff members, was that they tended to be unmistakable when they spoke. And the raised voices only compounded that.
Sabel turned with wide, blinking eyes to look back into the room, stopping dead beside Arya as he stared. When had Gevrik gotten there. More importantly, what was going on? He could feel anger seeping into his core at Ikenna's words, whether right or wrong. He was blatantly accusing and threatening Tate and that act right there banished any would-be trust he had for the ministry man.
Slowly, he moved back to the door, lingering just outside to hear the conversation.

*Matty looked between the two confused. He was still unsure of Gevrik, and this was not helping matters. The winners? He frowned thinking it over. The winners were who? Well the losers had to be those knights of Walpurgis. Another bit to the puzzle he was trying to figure out.*

"No, not true," Tate was glad the girl had recognized the myth as just that... a supposition. "Some probably did pursue Darker and Darker magics. At one time, Grindelwald held the interest of some of the Knights, and later, Voldemort did. These wizards both pursued new avenues of magic and would have led their followers down dark dark paths."

Kurumi nodded at the Headmaster's words and added to her notes.
Aw, class was over, already? Kurumi frowned even more when there was mention of a game that they didn't have time for. She didn't have anything planned after this, besides spending some time in the kitchens baking, so she could stick around...oh well. Seeing as the class had been dismissed, Kurumi went to putting her things in her bag when...

...for the second or third time this term, Mr. Ikenna appeared out of no where and scared the living daylights out of her. Squeaking rather loudly, Kurumi ended up dropping all her parchment that then scattered all over the floor around her desk. Fantastic...she had just finished alphabetizing them too.
Kurumi tilted her head to the side as she tried to pick up her papers without causing too much of a distraction to the two's conversation. The precious Knights? Wait, what was that supposed to mean? Professor Tate certainly had been interested in discussion them and how they were not all bad. Was he perhaps a fan?
Then her eyes flashed to Mr. Ikenna who was clearly not pleased with the way class had been instructed. What did he mean by winners? Was he talking about those who had smushed the 'precious knights' quest of pureblood and therefore wizarding supremacy? Kurumi tapped her pages against the floor in attempt to make them one nice stack. Kurumi had thought that Mr. Ikenna was a nice man, but seeing the sneer on his face when addressing her Professor made her put those thoughts out of her mind. Was this man...was he one of the Knights of Walpurgis?! Wait, were they even still around? Still, the Headmaster had dedicated a good portion of class to them...

It's finished?
Okay. Helena quickly scribbled the Headmaster's question, then packed her stuff and got up. "Goodbye, Headmaster," she said, smiling. "It was a very interesting lesson."
Or maybe I should wait, she thought, seeing Ikenna Gevrik in the room. What was he doing?

Sakura was moving to get up and leave when Gevrik appeared in the room. What was he doing here? Surely he didn't need to learn what they were. Then again she'd heard he'd been in other classes as well...
Sakura hadn't minded him before, he seemed ok, but now she resolved to stay put in the classroom until this was over. "I found the lesson quite interesting headmaster. It was nice to have the chance to discuss ideas and not just be told what we needed to believe. Even if it was 'subjective'." Sakura said with a small smile at the headmaster, and a tight one at Gevrik.
Of course the history was biased, all history was biased, any fool knew that! They might as well just get rid of any class that would involve history if they were going to object to it so much. Ok, so technically this was DADA and not HoM, but still talking about the past in this lesson had been good, and somewhat cathartic in the way that she got to express her ideals about Dark Magic without being told to just get over it and forgive people who turned to the Dark Arts.
And what did he mean about people suffering because of the Headmaster? Also, why would he bring it up in a room full of children? Surely this would have been better kept to a private environment?

There was something more going on here, something that made Jimmy have a truly Ravenclaw moment and keep his mouth shut, though he was listening openly. No point hiding that.
Not all the history books at least. Just the stuff that was mass produced right? Jim had the feeling stuff had been left out, because of lack of knowledge more than anything he guessed. Stuff that was kept hidden rather than lost. That was something for sure. What kind of person, or people, would want their escapades kept silent? The way that Gevrik dude said 'winners' kinda... gave a new level to whatever it was he was trying to say. It was like there was some kind of subtext they weren't all privy to.
Still, Jim was of the opinion that even the 'wrong' information was still something to learn from. Even if the full story wasn't there, it was good to have something to piece together, even if it was just opinion, even if it was just whatever propaganda stuff was currently in vogue.
Told you a lot about a time and a society, and the government if you knew what was in vogue and all.
Curious but not judgmental, since he didn't really have any particular loyalty to any professor, let alone to the headmaster (despite the guy being cooler than Jim had expected), he was well able to put any sort of personal reaction aside and listen.
He gave Ikenna Gevrik a closer look, realising that the dude had to have been in the class for the entire duration of the lesson, or else slipped in when that kid had left or something. So he must have heard people's opinions and all. That'd be interesting to know; what Gevrik thought of the answers kids gave, if anyone caught his attention. Well what a bloody lesson to choose to get involved in, huh? Normally Jim kept his mouth well shut after all, but not this time, and he would have if he'd known about the audience. Not that, when he thought about it, his personal opinions had been aired all that much.
But still.
.... that was some impressive disillusionment right there.

With a roll of his eyes at the attitude of some of his classmates, Jake packed his notes and stuff away before getting his wand from his bag and holstering it, returning Neptune's to her.
Standing up and slinging his bag over his shoulder, Jake smiled at Neptune as he offered his hand to help her up.
But the smile soon left.
Gevric.
"Tate's an awesome teacher. And headmaster. And guy," he pointed out loudly, staring at Gevrik. Seriously, the guy had been awesome to him in this lesson. "The only damaged kids I saw were the ones with far too much attitude and a need for attention."
And he should know.
Jake was not afraid to stare his opinion here, whoever it agreed with. He still respected both men, after all… but surely Ikenna could have waited to do all this if he didn't want people to hear and pipe up.
And he wasn't leaving yet.
Mainly because Neptune still had his cloak.

Writing as quickly as a flying dagger, Elle jot down neatly notes of what Headmaster Tate had said. He spoke quite fast, but it was an interesting lecture. Full of knowledge, insights and things not written in the books. Tate was an awesome teacher. He was the kind of wizard professor in which you need not study for a test because of his clear teaching skills.
"Homework soon to be posted... whatever happened to the rest of the Knights?... Death Eaters.... offspring..." The First Year muttered to herself as she scribbled the assignments.
Finished writing, Elle shut her notebook closed, slipped it into her bag together with her quill and approached the Headmaster.
"Good day, Sir. I'm Elizabeth Woods. One of your students? I just wanted to tell you how inspired I am at your knowledge with these... how knowledgeable you are at everything! It was a great pleasure meeting you, Headmaster Tate. The lesson today... my first time here at Hogwarts, you as my professor, the mystical yet beautiful and regal school... they were all great encounters that I would look forward to again in the future."
Elle nodded and smiled. Someday, she hoped to be as powerful and successful as him. Hopefully!!!

Some kids were total... well... kids. And it was funny that one of the few people who had an issue was this attitude ridden first year. Jake said nothing. Didn't even look outside the door at the girl, just looked at Tate with a no expression other than his eyebrows raising, which he couldn't seem to help.
There was voicing an opinion, and there was being a surly child.
Anyway, back to the matter at hand.
Getting his cloak back.
And totally eavesdropping.

His ever-intense eyes were fixated on the 'Headmaster.'
"Or is it that game where you corrupt young minds with your biased, false history?"
Satine was completely startled when Mr. Gevrik entered the room. She smiled at him but then her smile quickly faded with the convo between the Headmaster and the man. She wasn't really sure what to do or say...
AWKWARD...uh yes...
What game was he talking about and why was he under a charm hiding him away...this was not at all what Mr. Gevrik had talked about when they were in his office.
She glanced at him almost willing him to stop and to be the person he was in his office...polite and unassuming and not causing issues...yes this was an issue...a small one in her book...
You did not talk to the Headmaster this way...

The group may have had an affinity for him for that reason, although I doubt they needed an excuse. Both Voldemort and Grindelwald had an interest in pureblood supremacy. Grindelwald's philosophy was one of dominance over Muggles, while Voldemort's was more about elimination and oppression. I think Emily put it best, in that they used the Knights' ideologies to gain followers and were thus able to pluck from that group those who were best in line with what they believed. But they were willing to use Dark magics to get to those goals."
He paused, considering. "I had hoped to spend some time playing a little game today, but it appears we've run much longer than I intended. Let's leave it here, and we'll have a more active class next time. I promise we'll have a very exciting lesson. Maybe even wands," he grinned, knowing there had been initial disappointment at the lack of wands at the beginning of class.
"You're dismissed for now, although I want you to think about this... if the Death Eaters were an offspring group of the Knights of Walpurgis formed of extreme views, what has happened to the rest of the Knights? No answer necessary... just think about it. I'll have your homework posted shortly and you'll have 7 days to complete it."
Satine glanced back at Cassirin and then started packing up hoping to get out of the room that was thick with anger and testosterone. She glanced at the Headmaster as she walked out, "Sir, I enjoyed our discussion today...sorry it didn't go as planned." she said glancing over her shoulder towards the sneaky man...
The feeling that she was going to vomit on Jim had just passed... when... Really? Lexi quirked an eyebrow and looked between Mr. Ikenna and Tatertot. Really? Heaving a slight sigh she gathered her things and rose from her seat a bit shakily.
"Mr. Ikenna, nice to see you. Headmaster, great lesson..." she trailed off. It was so rude to eavesdrop on adult's conversations... at least where they could see you anyway. Looking back at Jim she gave him a rather weak smile and headed toward the door in a bit of a rush.

They were dissmissed. Already? Lessons sure when quick at Hogwarts. They used to drag at her muggle school. But mabye that's because she had hated them so much.
She made a final quick note in her journal just as Mr.Gevrik came into the class. 'Interesting' she thought as they started to... talk? Or argue? Either way, she was getting out of here.
She would have stayed, but lots of other students seemed to be trying to eavesdrop too, so it would be too suspicious.
She packed up her things then walked past the two men without a word. She still thinking about the book her and Nika had seen in the library and the notes she had made in class. Huh. Interesting.

Honestly, he didn't care. His hands were tied so tightly with all these curriculum changes in place, and he'd gone with his gut and taught what he thought the students needed.
"Check the history books. I only taught the truth. I'm not afraid... are you?"

Sierra released a small sigh as she stood from her seat and prepared to leave. She hadn't said too much toward the end of the lesson. She'd just done a whole lot of listening. The discussion had grown way too big for her. At eleven-years-old, she hadn't even heard of a lot of the topics the older students--and that dictionary eating Gryffindor--had spoken about.
She made herself a mental note to do a whole lot of reading about history in general before the next class. For now, though, she just wanted to get back to the common room and relax. Grabbing her bag, she headed toward the door, ready to leave.
That was, of course, until that Gevrik man she'd spoken to at the Hog's Head pretty much appeared out of nowhere. Had he been there the whole time?! Either way, Sierra sort of paused right where she stood and pretended to smooth out the wrinkles in her uniform skirt as she listened to the discussion between the two men.

He was NOT going to be pushed around his own classroom the way he'd been pushed around his school.
"It's my class," Tate spread his hands and gave the man a disarming smile. Read this: we will teach Defense how it pleases us, kthx. "As far as I can tell I'm still in charge of this classroom, and the man upstairs who has the power to protest how I choose to teach also happens to be me. Funny how that works."
That wasn't to say that Tate didn't believe that every word he'd taught was true or that he didn't feel like it was an important topic to handle. It just meant that he wasn't going to explain himself anymore.

Tate glanced back toward Jake and shook his head slightly, although he couldn't help looking a little pleased. "No need, my boy. Mr. Gevrik's opinion of me is formed. Has been since he showed up here."

And mind you, it certainly seems that usually what needs to be done in order to avoid repeating it is people risking their lives and fighting for it. Voldemort didn't try to come to power so long ago you haven't paid fair attention to it, did he? Last time I checked, quite a few people died at the hands of he and his Death Eaters while working to stop him.
On another note, I adore how you assume that since I am a first-year, and not fond of the subject matter you decided to present, that I'm, what, a pansy? Where on earth did you come up with the absurd notion that I imagined the world was 'puppy dogs and rainbows'? If I decided not to attend it would be because I would rather attend classes in which I am taught things. It's very disconcerting to me that our headmaster would, in a class composed primarily of first-years, many of whom happen to be muggleborn, teach the first lesson of the year about something like this. Even more disconcerting, is that someone who has that little tact is our headmaster. I'm not sorry if it seems as if I'm hissing."
Charley stood abruptly, gathered all her things and walked towards the door, sitting down barely outside the classroom so she could wait for her friends.
As she heard another voice sift into the corridor, she looked back into the classroom to see the man who had come into her Divination lesson also challenging Tate. A wide, cocky, contented, smile swept across her face, accompanied by a light chuckle. Glad to see there's someone on my side.
She continued watching him from just outside the room.
WHY was that girl still fighting? The class was over, and there were certainly bigger issues right now. Like the hulking great man at the back of the class. Tate gave her a sideways glance, bemused, before turning back to the man.

And this one had a strange sense of timing and an effusive love for adjectives. He gave her a polite nod and a tight smile. "Thanks, child. I hope you enjoy our second class just as much."

"It just went longer than I expected," Tate reassured the Ravenclaw girl. "But that is easy to repair. No need to apologize."
Ikenna was not oblivious to the student reactions to his temper. Realising that he could be undoing all the good he had worked in his office, the dark man took a breath and slowly lowered his folded arms.
His nostrils flared slightly but he managed to contrive a neutral tone nonetheless.
"It is currently your class. Rest assured that your style of instruction will be discussed at a later date, Tate."
Nodding once to the few students around him, Ikenna turned and deliberately strode out of the room, disappearing completely once he had reached a clear portion of corridor.
