Default CoMC #2 - Blue Whale, Birds & Gift Shop

So, the next stop is the exciting Blue Whale, Marine & Reptile Gallery

As you enter the large room, the bone theme is still present - you notice this if you look up to see several sea creatures' skeletons hanging from the ceiling. By the walls are a couple of replicas and parts of fishes, like sharks and those things that live so deep underwater you might never have known them.

Some of them even have names associated with the Wizarding world, like this big lizard, called Komodo Dragon. This gallery has more to offer, but don't worry, the class will get to them soon.

Maya kept walking and finally stopped to stand infront of what looked like a dried out fish with a thing poking out of it's head.
"What... is this?" She hoped to hear some fun answers. Unless everyone in this class was supersmart. Meh. "Give me your best guess." Come onnnnn.

Hehe. "Nice comparison." You know, atleast she knew how a flamingo looked like. "Yes, it is indeed a Dodo." Dododo. Hehe-

Having been staring at it all throughout the discussion, the Slytherin girl followed the rest of the class and the professors to the next roo- CRINGE! Bugs. Bugs and more bugs. Bugs meant creepy crawlies and creepy crawlies meant things with eight legs. We ALL know what eight legs means TOO!

Crossing her arms, as if trying to be as small looking as possible so no eight legged monsters would get her, hazel eyes landed on the bird that the professor was asking about. Hehe, that kinda looked like..."A diriclaw?" she asked, raising a brow. WELL!? It looked like one.
"Yes, very good. It is a Diricawl." Nodddd. Yes, yes, muggle old man, no need to stare at us for calling the creature different.

"That called a Dodo bird," She lowered her voice, eyes flicking briefly to the passing muggles. "Or a Diricawl to... us." She straightened back up, nodding her head slowly, a grin working its way back on her lips.
"You are correct. Good answers." And the way she answered. Hehehe.

She eyed the bird that the professor pointed out, she was pretty sure she knew what kind that was, it sure was funny looking too. She quickly raised her hand, "That's a dodo, Professor. At least it was, they are extinct though."
"Very good, indeed it is a Dodo." Did she know the magical name?

Emily followed the class into the creepy crawly section. This would also interest her, she had decided.
She looked the ugly bird up and down. It was a model of...
"It's a Dodo I think. They're an extinct bird." In a nutshell. It was such a shame animals became extinct. Well, except the dino's.
Extinct, ey? "Good. Yes, it is a Dodo." Buuuuuut... "What makes you think it's extinct?" Smirk.

Ellie pondered on this as she walked into the next room.

EWWWW BUGSSSS!

Where was Spike?! He would SOOOO love this room. Ellie would take lots of pictures of the icky sticky creepy crawlies JUST for him so he could keep them forever and ever. He'd better appreciate it.

As for the bird...yeah, she hadn't a CLUE.
Stalew eggo? What was she talking about? Maya turned to the young girl for a moment. "Give your Stalew Eggo to Mister Stryker before you hurt anyone with it." She had NO idea what it was, but it sounded dangerous and shouldn't be in the vicinity of children.

"That's a Dodo," she said with her hand shooting up in the air. "It is a flightless bird that was unique to the Indian Ocean island of Mauritius." She paused fora moment and frowned. "The Dodo's extinction occurred during recorded human history and was directly attributable to human activity."
Oops. It had not been Maya's intention to scare the beejevies out of that girl. Though...it was interesting, she thought, that it had had that effect. Heh.

Anywyas, moving on? and hope she wont report her to Tate.
"Very good. Yes it is a Dodo...and all those other things you said." They sounded elaborate.

To be honest, Sierra was sort of ready to head back to the castle now. She'd seen more than enough Muggle creatures for the day. Or maybe for the year, too. She felt her eyebrows furrow a little as they headed into The Creepy Crawlies and Birds Gallery. What a combination--didn't most birds eat creepy crawlies?

With a very unamused expression spread across her face, Sierra turned her attention to whatever it was the professor was pointing out. She perked up when she saw that it wasn't a Muggle creature, but a magical creature--a diricawl! "That's a diricawl, Professor," she said. She didn't have to ask what it was doing here. She knew the Muggles had their own version of the creature called the dodo bird. Supposedly, it was extinct.
"Yes! Good, good. A diricawl." And see, she said nothing about it being extinct or whatever. Straight to the point. Refreshing.

He like all animals, so it didn't really matter to him where they were in the museum.

When Professor Saylen pointed out the bird, Christopher's hand shot up in the air at full speed. "That would be the Dodo Bird, or Raphus Cucullatus, which is extinct. They became extinct in 1690, but they are featured in Lewis Carroll books, ensuring that they will not be forgotten." Christopher smiled, he loved classical Muggle books. He wished more people could appreciate such wonderful literature.
"Correct you are...on this being the Dodo bird." The other part, however, "I will ask you too - what makes you think it's extinct?" Hehe.

"Professor... I beleieve that is a Dodo... they're extinct." she said. She was relatively confident about this one.
Oh, Maya could stand here and argue with this childe on wether or not it was our or 'their' problem, but atleast she had an opinion. The Mexicana nodded and carried on. "Very good. But, again, why do you assume it is extinct?" Whyyy people, whyy?

She tried her best to keep her eyes completely away from any and all "creepy crawlies," breathing slowly and deeply as she tried to focus on the bird Professor Saylen was now asking them about. Slowly, she raised a hand. "I think it's a dodo bird," she answered. "They're supposed to be extinct." Of course, they weren't, and they were known to wizards as diricawls, but she decided it wouldn't be wise to say that outloud, not while there could be Muggles around to hear.
Supposed!
Maya practically beamed at this. "Very good. Indeed it is a Dodo, and indeed many think they are extinct."

Ah. "Mhm, very good. Dodo's have been featured in many stories." Nod.

Lookit! A Diricawl! The bird could've been an awesome one if he didn't prefer a Demiguise. Which was by no mean in the same category as a Diricawl, they only share one little ability and it doesn't work the same way, so, yeah.

"Well, that's a...," he didn't have to finish the sentence, because he had a more important question, "How did they manage to get him?" Or her. And, yes, 'they' being the Muggles and 'him' being the Diricawl/Dodo.

K-Lee loved Diricawls. They were one of her favourite magical creatures. They were all 'Hey, I'm a Diricawl. I used to be known to humans as dodo's but they think I'm exctint now, but it's cool, I can do the bird equivalent of apparating/disapparating but I can't fly, like penguins!'

Merlin K-Lee wanted a pet Dircawl.
"Correct you are. Good answer, it is indeed a Dodo." Nod nod.

He then lowers his voice to a very soft whisper, and glad that he had moved closer to the professor when they moved here, and said, "Though Fantastic Beasts identifies it as a Diriclaw."

He looks around to be sure no one was close enough to her the whispered part besides his class mates.
"Yes, it does indeed. Good answer. But, how do you know it is extinct?" Was the Dodo or Diricawl extinct, ey?

"Very good, all of you." She paced as well as you could in that little space between the kids and the Dodo. "Do you think keeping them in the dark about the truth has helped the creature survive?" And more importantly, "Do you think if we did this with more creatures, like the Blue Whale, they would be safer?" Tell the truth kids.

Zooom! maturity is boring ★

Harper nodded fervently. Most definitely yes yes yes yes yes yes yes.

"Mmmmhmm, I think that keeping muggles oblivious to the fact that they are...diricawls to us, helps them. Because - well, look at the Salem Witch Trials. They thought they were witches, they tried to destroy them. If they thought that Dodo birds - or Diricawls - were magical, they would want to get rid of them cause they would be an extreme threat."

Then she remembered the second question. She didn't quite have an answer to that, as she was eager to hear what other people thought first.

Charley forced herself to keep her mouth from gaping in awe as she listened to Professor Saylen's responses.
A diricawl!!
"I didn't know that dodos and diricawls were the same species, Professor. I think it helped to keep it in the dark, though. I'm not sure that it would help with the whale, though. They are much larger, and there is only so much water on Earth to put them in. Someone would be bound to notice sometime or another, right?"

K-Lee nodded. "It has helped the dodo/diricawl survive, but it wouldn't work for a blue whale. They are waaaaayyyy to big to hide the continued existence of, in water at least. If they were on land maybe they could be hidden." Yep, like dragons and giants.

"If they are small and tricky enough like dodo's it could work, but whale sized is too big." K-Lee finished her answer.

Nika cocked her head to the side and raised her eyebrows. "Huh? Who do you mean by them. Keeping what in the dark? HUH!?! Professor I'm really really confused." Nika was not following. Nika being a muggle born had no idea what her professor was talking about.

Arya nodded her head, repeatedly rocking back on her heels. "I do think they would be safer." And then she lowered her voice again so the passing muggles wouldn't over hear her. "But I don't think it would be fair to... them to deprive them of such a magnificent creature like we did with the diricawl." She paused to consider the candy in her jacket pocket. "Maybe if we let them continue to think the whales are endangered?"

Luin thought about it for awhile, that was definitely an interesting conundrum. After evaluating her answer in her head for a minutes, she raised her her hand, "I believe that keeping their existence purely known to the wizarding world has helped them survive throughout these years. Because muggles don't believe they exist, they have learned better ways of treating creatures. They also do not hunt the diricawl/dodo any more because they believe it is extinct. If we did this to any other animal they could be safer, although I do believe the muggles may start to...freak out if many more creatures did this close to one another in time."

"But they are rare to find too."she added in about the dodos. But keeping them in secret? belle thought about it and pondered, well if they were not known then how could people save them? and know about them and what to teach future students. I think it is wrong to deprive us of seeing their beauty if they were kept secret and what they contribute to the world.

Blink. Blink. Blink.

Did she think he was THAT stupid?!

Treyen literally narrowed his eyes at the woman, and then raised an eyebrow. Yeah. He was NOT commenting on that. It was perfectly obvious that such a thing never happened, no one traveled, he was oh-so-sure of that.

He had no other theory as to why the Diricawl was there, but he wasn't taking Saylen's answer.

Does Mr. Amazing Stryker have something to say about it? No? Okay.

"Nah." Yeah, awesome answer to her question. "They're completely different, there's no comparison that could be made." First, one was a mammal and the other a bird. Second, one was magical, the other one not. Third, he didn't care about the whale, whilst the Diricawl was a whole different case. "I have never seen a Diricawl before, so, they do an awesome job at keeping to themselves, it doesn't matter if the truth is out there or not with this particular creature." It vanishes at will, the Diricawl IS a smart creature.

Do what?!

"You never gave me one to give him!" Great. If she wasn't supposed to have it out, it was probably a lot of fun and NOW she was missing out.

POUT.

Ohhhh! It was a Diricawl, wasn't it? Yes. Ellie could see that now.

"Noooo.... the muggles would still know about the creature and hunt it whether they knew it by its proper name or not..." Duh.

Cruddd... Vow of silence just flew out the window again.

"I don't think it would work anymore," Patroclus began, his mind quickly trying to organise this thoughts, so as it word them best. "I think the Dodo exticntion was easy to pull off, because Muggles in thoses days weren't so environmentally aware, they didn't realise that by their relentless hunting that they could wipe out the enitre speices."

Simply put, they were simpltons.....

"However the Muggles nowadays are realising what they are doing to the environment, and I think us simply hiding the Blue Whales from them would ring some alarm bells. Yes the Whales are becoming harder and harder to find, but I think like the muggles should have done long ago, we too should just let nature run it's own course!"

The sixth year thought about what the professor was saying, his glance moving between the creature and the woman as he mused on his answer. "It might but it would be messing with nature as well as those who threaten it in the first place," Simon answered. "The diricrawl has the ability to disappear and reappear to escape being caught, for it to work with most other animals, charms and other magical interference would be needed to implement the idea."

Emily jotted some notes down on her note pad, then turned to look at the Professor.
"I think it would help them survive definately, but at the same time, it would seem sort of unfasir that the muggles would't be able to know they exist anymore. I know there are a handful of them that are the reason these creatures are becoming endangered and in fear of extinction but there are many other muggles that love animals and creatures and do not with to harm them, so taking the knowledge of their existence away from them would be sad." she said.

Vashti considered this for a moment before raising her hand to offer an answer. "I guess, in a way, it has helped the 'dodo' survive and hiding creatures like the whale would help them survive too, but I don't know if it's realistic to think that we can hide a creature like the Blue Whale. The 'dodo' has the ability to disappear and reappear at will, so it has its own means of keeping itself safe and keeping its species alive, without all that much help from us. The Blue Whale, on the other hand, is a pretty normal creature that doesn't have the same abilities as a 'dodo' to keep itself safe, so it would require a lot of work from us to somehow protect them from the people that don't care about them and to keep this all hidden from others who actually do care about them and are trying to make sure they don't become extinct. I think the people that are actually trying to prevent their extinction would notice if they suddenly disappeared completely, and I don't think they'd be so happy about it."

Merlin, she never realized how hard it was to not use exclusively magical phrases until now, when she was put around Muggles that didn't know anything about the magical world. She knew some of the other students were still using them, but she personally felt she shouldn't, out of respect to the Muggles. Vashti knew that if she had turned out to be just a Muggle and suddenly heard a group of students calling creatures she knew strange names, she'd be awfully curious and might even ask about it; so she wasn't going to risk the chance that any of the people around here were like her.

And at this point she wasn't really sure if she'd answered the questions. Merlin's beard, she really ought to work on giving just a couple sentences for answers all the time. She'd probably actually remember the question that way.

"Very good. Yes it is a Dodo...and all those other things you said." They sounded elaborate.
Kurumi wasn't sure, but she thought she saw the Professor's temple deflate. Phew, there was no chance for an explosion now.

Them? Kurumi noted everyone's sudden looks around at all the non-magical people and figured that that was who Professor Saylen was referring to. "Professor, I am not sure if it would keep them safer or not...whenever an animal is getting closer and closer to extinction, people tend to look to zoos. Zoos are widely regarded as guardians of endangered species. In the case of a blue whale, people will think that it is more deserving of protection than a cow because blue whales are endangered and the loss of a single blue whale may impact the survivability of the species. So, perhaps it would damage the possibility of the blue whale surviving if it became hidden from non-magical eyes."

Selina listened to Kurumi's answer and smiled. Someone like Kurumi was hard to find. She was the only person she knew that was genuinely concerned about the right thing all of the time. The only fear that Selina had for her small friend was that people would take advantage of her nice behavior.

In response to the Professor Selina said, "I don't know ma'am. How can we be sure that by hiding them away from Muggle eyes would ensure their protection. We cannot always control magical creatures. Take for instance dementors. They are always running about and the whale is not exactly as small as the dodo."

"In the case of the blue whale we may be able to protect it but if we bring all of them here there will been a major over abundance of phytoplankton in the ocean cause the blue whale is huge and it only eats phytoplankton. Phytoplankton produce carbon dioxide which in small amounts combined with water produces oxygen. However in large amounts carbon dioxide becomes a toxic gass gas that can kill the other wild life and burn holes in the ozone layer causing global warming. Similar stories can been said about other endangered muggle animals. The point is if we remove an entire species of wildlife from it's natural habitat we upset the delicate balance of nature which can have much more profound effects then muggle outrage. We just have let muggles protect these endangered species the best they can. The only reason that we can have our diricrawl is because theycan disapear which means they can have their place in nature and disapear from view at a moments notice from muggle view. It's makes the dodo now known here as diricrawl in a way magical which other muggle creatures arenot and therefore do not belong here.", Chloe responded with her hand raised high

"Hmmm." Maya crossed one arm on her chest while her other hand tapped her lips. "Those are some interesting thoughts." Yes they were. "So, you're basically saying that Muggles have not learned from the past and are still closeminded... Interesting." Well that's what Maya thought the girl said.

"I didn't know that dodos and diricawls were the same species, Professor. I think it helped to keep it in the dark, though. I'm not sure that it would help with the whale, though. They are much larger, and there is only so much water on Earth to put them in. Someone would be bound to notice sometime or another, right?"
Oh, she didn't knowww! Wow. "Why would you relocate the whales? Wouldn't it be just as good to let them be where they are?" Hm?

"If they are small and tricky enough like dodo's it could work, but whale sized is too big." K-Lee finished her answer.
Maya was starting to get confused by their leetle brains, "What's the difference between water and land?" But she was curious to hear why they thought this way, for sure.

Maya saw the girl's raised eyebrows and went searching for a raised hand...but, alas. "By them I mean people not like us, and we're talking about the wale and dodo. Try to keep up." Pfffshhhhh. Hehe.

"Maybe if we let them continue to think the whales are endangered?"
Aw. "That is another interesting thought. How about if we 'deprived' them of half of the total whale count?" She raised an eyebrow.

Because muggles don't believe they exist, they have learned better ways of treating creatures. They also do not hunt the diricawl/dodo any more because they believe it is extinct.

Completely different creatures? Pshhhh, really? Hehe.
HAH. "It is true, the Dodo does have an advantage with its abilities. Maybe if the whale could do the same there would be more of them." Blah. Perhaps evolution could help them out in the future?

Ohhhh! It was a Diricawl, wasn't it? Yes. Ellie could see that now.

"Noooo.... the muggles would still know about the creature and hunt it whether they knew it by its proper name or not..." Duh.

Cruddd... Vow of silence just flew out the window again.
Blink. "Yes, changing the name wouldn't really help it that much...but what about us helping the creature?" That was the question, yo.

Breathe!
Good, good. "Interesting to hear you also think Muggles have learnt from their experiences." However the young Prefect's last comment made Maya worried. "Run it's own course?" But, but...but, "You are saying that we shouldn't help the whales and...que sera sera, whatever will be will be?" Is that what he is saying??

Messing with nature... Okay, Maya was getting worried. "Messing with the wrongdoers isn't such a bad thing." She smirked but looked serious again, "But yes, it would require a strong commitment from dedicated people for it to work."

Zoos. Bleh. "Indeed, zoos are a good way of trying to cope with a creatures extinction." Sometimes it works, sometimes it doesn't.

Hm. "Interesting thought. So one could say, without muggles the whale might survive...but with muggles the whale might not survive either." Oh how confusing. Sigh.

I'll leave the thread open until Midnight EST so you can answer Maya (if you wish), ask something else or whatever, and let your characters say bye bye to the museum This is not an invitation for your characters to run amok in the museum, beyond the room they are in, and raise attention.

Great lesson, everyone!
The third class will start soon *gasp*

DODO BIRD!

Jacob pushed his way to the front of the crowd in front of the extinct, yet not extinct bird... How did that Make any sense? But he did know one thing.

"I WANNA PET IT!" He yelled loudly.

Yes he wanted to pet it so much... he wanted to pet it so very much. Unlike the whale... he wanted to touch this one. The whale would like eat him. But he wanted to try and chop it up and fit it through a door... Someone get Jacob his Sword... He wanted to chop the whale!

Jacob cleared his throat as if he'd never screamed the other statement. "Professor, The Dodo bird was hidden because of its... ability." he said trying his best to be cautious of how he wording things around the muggles. "Whales don't really have anything that would make our community take interest. If the Whale could like fly or something then the ministry should have already taken action on the creatures population issue. But seeing as they don't have any abilities like that... our community as a whole probably wouldn't take it upon ourselves to really do anything about it." thats just how it went. If a person doesn't get benefits from it or it doesn't affect them directly, they don't really do anything.

And they were going back now? Well that was disappointing

Charley blushed.
"Oh, I didn't mean relocate them. I was simply thinking that it would be hard to keep muggles from finding out they existed since they are so large."

Belle explained to the professor, "Well i would like to see the last one of the species and then keep it in secret for a while." That is what she thought about the situation. She heard the professor end the lesson and said goodbye to the musuem. "I had so much fun! I love this place! I hope we can come back soon." Belle said happily. She loved exploring the muggle world.

"With this wonderful discussion, and probably more questions floating around your heads, it is time for us to wrap this lesson up." She nodded and looked around, just to make sure everyone was still with the group. Hehe. "I'll let you have half an hour to look around this room before we head back." A small smile stretched her lips, though quite quickly her eyes narrowed as if expecting them all to go crazy. As soon as they were ready, the alley near the museum was calling for them. HEH.

OOC: This lesson has ended!

Emily's heart sank a little when she heard the lesson had come to an end. Finihsing off the last of her drawing and notes Emily wandered around the room, marvelling at the various displays.

"This has been a fantasitc lesson Professor, thank you."
sh said smiling.

After a showrt while Emily rejoined what was left of the group waiting to depart.

Arya nodded her head. "That sounds fair." They really didn't need ALL the whales. Not if they were going to eat them and use there skin for Merlin knows what. Nope.

Aww. They were about to leave and they only just arrived. That's how it felt to Arya. Her eyes danced around the room that she'd yet to explore. So many creatures to see, but she had a totally relevant question to ask before looking at the dead animals. "Professor?" Brown eyes returned to the woman. "Do we get souvenirs?" Because you didn't go to a museum and not get a souvenir right? Arya thought so. Hehe.

Hm. "Interesting thought. So one could say, without muggles the whale might survive...but with muggles the whale might not survive either." Oh how confusing. Sigh.
Feeling even more relaxed now that Professor Saylen looked even less like she was about to burst, Kurumi looked back at the dodo...erm...dirclaw...and frowned. Was there really a way to prevent an animal's extinction? It seem like this was more of an environmental issue than an issue of non-magical people doing to the animals exactly.

The world was such a confusing place.

Still thinking about all this, Kurumi's train of thought was broken when Professor Saylen addressed the entire class again. what? Time to head back to school already? Kurumi wasn't ready to leave the museum yet. There was so much more to explore!

"Professor Saylen, about what you asked earlier," Kurumi said turning her attention away from the dodo and back to her. "I understand the benefits that there may be if these creatures were...hidden from certain people's eyes...but I think the problem is more about the changes in the envirnoment. As long as we," yes, witches and wizards were included in this calculation, "continue to destroy the environment and therefore the ecosystem, these creatures will continue to go extinct."

Bad Wolf / / Linux99rules!

Disappointed, Emmy looked around the huge room they stood in, gazing in awe at al the exhibits.
"Thanks, professor - I can quite honestly say this has been one of my favourite lessons!"
She tried to picture what it would have been like, millions of years ago, swimming around the oceans with Icthyosaurus and Metriorinchus - just as she used to when she visited the museum as a little girl with her parents.
