| | Astronomy 1 Honestly, it wasn't Josephina's top preference to teach this subject but she'd done reasonably adept in it during her school days, so she figured why not? Minus the fact that she totally missed Antares already; he always seemed like such the gentlemen at the feasts. Quiet and more the observational type, but nice.
Nonetheless, she'd agreed to help out and give the kids some type of astronomy lesson this term so here she was. After the long walk up to the tower and now some deep breathing, she opened the classroom door and practically collapsed into the large chair at the front of the room. Don't worry kids, lesson will begin as soon as the substitute professor catches her breath. She's not used to those stairs

| Steps 1+2 Again Post 3 Toothless - Napoleon of Crime - Gryffinclaw - Owl Emissary - Pirate Auror - DoctorDonna Simon felt like he was cleaning his broom rather then the telescope for Professor Hadley had been right it did tend to lean towards the same reasoning...if you wanted the equipment you worked with to work properly, you had to treat it with respect. So he was finishing up the refreshed first coat once more as he started the whole process over. Once he had once more awaited the alotted time, he added one more fresh coat of the cleaning solution. Thankfully the smell wasn't too overwhelming or he would have been done for by now.

2. Allow to air dry for a minute, before applying another coat of cleaning solution and rubbing it onto the looking glass and all over the telescope. Keep the rubbing to clockwise circular motions and continue until you've done all over the scope.
3. Take a fresh towel and rub in the same direction to towel dry the scope.
4. Repeat steps 1-3 as necessary until dust and debris is gone
5. Once the scope is clean, spray a thin layer of holding cream over the scope to help prevent future dust outbreaks. 6. Allow the solution to dry fully before operating the telescope. This may take up to 24 hours. Finally finding and retrieving said fresh towel, Jake got to work on rubbing the telescope clean, trying hard to get that solution off. It smelt weird, and Jake didn't really understand how you had to put something ELSE on an item to clean it.
Well... he understood, but he didn't like the nonsense knowledge.
Again with the tongue poking out, Jake rubbed all the solution off... and then looked at the telescope in disappointment. "I'm sure Antares kept these clean, but some fool really did a number on this thing," he grumbled to himself, grabbing the first cloth and starting over again with rubbing the cleaning solution on. He wouldn't need a fresh towel for later, either... the one he'd just used had plenty of clean space. YUP.
"So... where is Antares? I must have missed it if it was said..." Wibble.

Not a terribly long process? That meant it WAS a long process and if there was anything more the Slytherin hated besides cleaning...it was a LONG cleaning process.
Sighing heavily and loudly, she staaaaared at the Professor as she created the LARGE instructions for them all to see as well as the cleaning supplies. Ugghhhhhh. Where was Destiny? Could she clean hers quickly and then clean Evelyn's? Her Slytherin friend knew that Evelyn only made things worse when cleaning. It just didn't come naturally to her like it did to Destiny.
The dark haired Slytherin will more then likely end up breaking the telescope than fixing it and making it all nice and clean. But, if the professor INSISTED, then she was going to clean this thing! WOOOOT!
Taking one of the towels, she stared at it for a moment before looking at the solution that was needed to clean the astronomy instrument. Nooooow, apply a light layer? This was soooo not the same as cleaning a broom. |

"It's not a terribly long process but it is very important because of how delicate and expensive the parts of a telescope are... As a fragile piece of equipment, using a simple charm would not do justice to cleaning a telescope." Hadley explained. "Just think of it like a broom... You wouldn't use tergeo or something on your broomstick, would you? Same thing with a telescope."
Right. She was rambling. "Now, onto the cleaning process..." For this, Hadley used her wand to make the cleaning supplies materialize by them. As well as a large paper with cleaning instructions for them to follow. ooc: I'm not sure how available I'll be today, Sunday, so I'm posting all the cleaning instructions now. Feel free to make separate posts for each step ... or include two steps in one post ... For full credit, at least five posts though are required =). Have fun with this!!! Selina watched as Hadely began to start the lesson in Astronomy in the realm of cleaning. She tried her hardest to jot down all of the notes that were being spewed out. For an odd reason she could not find herself able to write fast enough. Once she was finally caught up Hadely had allowed them to get started on their cleaning of the instruments.
Then Selina went to the telescope and eyed it. Why was the machine so odd looking? Selina then looked back at her notes and sighed. Okay, she could do this. Very carefully Selina drew her hand to grab the towel and opened the cleaning solution provided. It had a strong oder to it and Selina felt like she was going to pass out. Swallowing her disgust Selina applied it to her towel.
She then waited several minutes for it to dry. As it dried Selina pondered what was happening lately in school. All of the teachers were filling in for others. It was an odd occurence she could not quite put her finger on. Before she could think any more she noticed her towel was dry and reapplied. Once it was ready Selina carefully rubbed the entire telescope in a clockwise motion until it was adiquite.

Kyle sighed looking at the telescope - gunk! There was still gunk on it.
She quickly began again with step number rubbing the solution over the looking glass as well as the entire telescope. The rag was spotless at first, afterwards was black.
She crinkled her nose. And kept using the rag until the next step.

Selina admired her work and pressed on. She took a fresh towel and moved in the same circular motion she had previously to dry the entire telescope. Since she was so tiny and the telescope was so large Selina had to stand on her toes to reach every part of the tall telescope until it was completely dry. Once it was dry Selina went around a second time with her third step to make sure it was trully dry before she pressed on.

"Okay, one more," she agreed, smiling almost teasingly. She'd already applied another layer of the cleaning solution to her towel, and had begun to apply it onto the scope itself.

What was left? K-Lee looked over the instructions and saw only two steps left. YES! Making sure the scope was completely clean, she sprayed on holding cream.
She hoped that after this telescope there weren't any more telescopes to clean. Now to see what step 6 was.
Whaaa- Might take 24 hours? "Professor, if these take 24 hours to dry fully, what will we do with them for that time?" K-Lee really hoped she didn't have to wait 24 hours.

Well, now that she had the cleaner next to her, the Slytherin...continued to stare at it. Didn't they have some gloves or something they could use? What if this stuff burned her hands!? HMMM!?
Scoffing quietly, she slowly and carefully placed some of the cleaner onto the towel before switching from staring at the cleaner, to staring at the dirty telescope. Eh. This towel was going to be black by the time she was done wasn't she? Merlin, if she knew she'd be cleaning in the lesson, she'd have stuck with dropping the class. Sighing heavily, making SURE the professor...could've...heard that, Evelyn started on cleaning the telescope.
Ew..
Ewwwww....
LOOK at all the DIRT and DUST that was coming off! HOW long have they been sitting here? And why didn't they use these in the lesson a few terms back when they had that substitute in Astronomy instead of making those cruddy toilet paper roll telescope things?! Pffft.
Once the first task was terribly done, Evelyn smirked before glancing up to the instructions. WHAT?! They had to do another coating?! Meh. DRY FASTER!

Jaina removed the last layer of cleaning solution with a fresh towel. Her hands were dirty from the cleaning, so she didn't touch her newly cleaned telescope...that would mean more cleaning! She sprayed the holding cream on it. "Well, that should do it! It needs to dry for 24 hours, right?" As she bent down to pick up the towel she dropped, she noticed the pink streak. She quickly stood up and shook her head once to get rid of it. Dang it, Ben! she thought. She wiped her forehead with her dirty hand leving a dirt mark across it. "I swear Ben will be the death of me if I don't keep this hair under control when he's in the picture," she giggled, "It's the only thing I haven't mastered yet."

She kept rubbing, rubbing, rubbing continuously in clockwise circular motions until it was all over the telescope again.
Dropping the old dirty towel onto the table infront of her she grabbed her other clean town, and rubbed the same direction onto the telescope as before, clockwise that is until the telescope was dry. Then, she did it again a second time repeating her first step of using the clean towel and the solution provided - then rubbing counter clockwise after waiting for it to air dry. Then as the dust and debris was now gone, she took her can of Holding Cream and sprayed a layer over the entire telescope.
She waited for it to dry, and sat there calmly waiting for the telescope to be dry. She'd have to work with it in a few days time - what a waist.
"Isn't the looking glass of the telescope the most important part of it?" she inferred, smiling. Professor Hadley walked around the table as she watched the students cleaning their telescopes. They seemed content with it ... doing it because it was part of the lesson, but had it been their choice, many would have neglected this very important and tedious task. "Exactly. The looking glass is indeed one of the most important parts, so involves exceptional care. Partly why it is preferable to use manual labor for cleaning the telescopes rather than magical cleaning methods," Professor Hadley noted. Quote:

Waiting for a reply, Riley eagerly sprayed the entirity of his telescope with the indicated cream that would keep the pesky dust and dirt monsters off of his clean shiny telescope. He didn't work hard for nothing! He propped the finished product up to allow it to dry and then waited for further directions and a response from the semi-Astronomy Professor. "Mr Sinclair, I assure you this product is not one that could be used for beauty purposes." As for where she got it? The cupboard of course. His hands repeating the earlier clockwise circular motions as he worked hoping at least this time the telescope would appear in better shape cleaniness wise then before. The quidditch captain had no desire to repeat the steps over and over again to make things perfect in everyway for it already had to wair 24 hours once everything was done before using and he didn't want to waste time cleaning.

K-Lee nodded, understanding what Professor Hadley was saying. She had finished her cleaning so wrote on a name card her house, name and year. Putting it next to her prettyfully clean telescope, K-Lee stood up.
Grabbing her belongings, K-Lee gave one last look at her clean telescope before leaving the classroom, glad that she was done with cleaning for the night. "Bye Professor Hadley, thanks for the lesson."

"I swear Ben will be the death of me if I don't keep this hair under control when he's in the picture," she giggled, "It's the only thing I haven't mastered yet." Charley finished scrupulously cleaning her telescope, then looked to Jaina.
"It should, yes. May I?" she asked, reaching towards the spray bottle of holding cream in Jaina's hand.
"I'll take a well-deserved trip to the library later, and try to find something that might help."
She reached over with her towel and gently wiped Jaina's forehead.
"There, all better," she said then giggled.

Emmy rubbed - again - yet more cleaner onto her now gleaming telescope, making sure that every millimetre was clean and sparkling. She was rather pleased with her work...
Even though it was so painful at the time, she was sure it would be worth it in the end.
She took her second cloth, and, finding a dry area, began to rub the cleaner off, following the same clockwise circular motions.

"That sounds like a good idea, but this is the first time I haven't been able to control it with a certain person. Maybe something's wrong with me." She filled out a card for her telescope: Quote:

With steps one, two, and three now complete, Sierra glanced back at the list of instructions, ready for step four. Well, she wasn't necessarily ready for it, but she was more or less ready to get it over with. Besides, Professor Hadley had just announced that once they were done with all the steps, they were free to leave. That alone was enough to get Sierra motivated.
Wait...what?! She now had re-do steps one, two, and three?!
With a fierce glare in her eyes and a frown on her face, she picked up another fresh towel and turned toward her telescope. Step four of the instructions had said 'as necessary', so if she didn't think it necessary, she didn't have to do this step, did she?! Mehh...she should at least look like she's doing something...
After dabbing a bit of solution onto her fresh towel, Sierra dabbed at a few spots that could use a little extra cleaning. She let those spots air dry for a minute, and then she applied a second coat of the solution. When all the little spots that weren't quite as clean were finally up to par, she used another fresh towel to dry it all off.
Finally--step five!

Luin finally went on to step three. She rubbed her towel over the telescope in the correct direction, quickly drying it. She hummed to herself a bit as she worked, this was going to be somewhat tedious but she was always fascinated by astronomy, so hopefully their next lesson they would be looking through these telescopes.
