K E L L E Y 2 5 3 3 5 7 25 7 She seemed to have had an easier time with the calculations than most of the other students. Well, there's a reason I'm in Ravenclaw. She grabbed her textbook and flipped through to the page that gave the information associated with the number as a Family Name Number, also copying down the descriptions in the front of the book. 7: Analysis, research, solitude, wisdom, spiritual focus, investigative, mystical SEVEN (7): Analytical and Mystical Key Words: Intellectual, inner wisdom, scientific-technological minded, metaphysical and occult mysteries, loner, eccentric, intuitive, private, skeptical, reserved, analyst, education, calculation, logic, ritual, reason, dignity Astrological Equivalent: Pisces Tarot Card Equivalent: The Hermit (silent, wise, seeks truth. The solitary Hermit is the wise teacher and withdraws to mediate); the 7s of each Minor Arcana suit Colors: Violet, purple Gems: Amethyst, alexandrite Flowers: Lavender for silence, rose-scented geranium for preference and discernment SEVEN (7): You inherit a desire for knowledge, you value learning, and you respect quality, facts, and theories, as well as a need for spiritual understanding. Your family traits will be those of observation, analysis, perfectionism, and the desire for privacy. That's so true...More about Henry and I than the others, I think, but very true. |

Marie sat there quietly as Finn read her parchment then looked in his book. Right, of course he would pick out that last part first. "Yeah, so I've been told." She said with a shrug. She knew she was very opinionated and could be quite stubborn. But being a Slytherin and a Malfoy sometimes she had to be those things to get what she wanted. Well that's the way she seen it anyway. Oh, now she liked the way he was thinking about family. Of course Evelyn and Destiny were like family to her, they were like her sisters... as was Mia too. "Yeah, we're very close." There wasn't anything she wouldn't do for them. Including taking the risk of points loss or detention to protect them. Grabbing her quill she started to write this down on her parchment. SPOILER!!: Marie's Parchment Hmm... looking back at the books definition she still wasn't sure about the rest of it. Maybe everything didn't have to fit her... did it? She was just about to ask Finn what he though when.... O________O Did Josh just... PROPOSE to Evelyn!? Were they even back together? Oh Marie would definitely be talking to Evelyn after class. |
Since others had volunteered and been chosen before sh'ed had a chance to, Vashti decided to work on her list a bit more. Perhaps there were some things she'd forgotten to put down. SPOILER!!: Vashti's pro/con list Mm, that was all she could think of for the moment. If another one came to her she'd just add it later But now it was time to calculate, so Vashti moved her paper up a bit so she'd have more room to write on. SPOILER!!: Vashti's calculations Wait, wait. So she'd gotten an eleven which, according to the textbook, was a master number. But she'd never gotten a master number before, so she suddenly wasn't sure what to do with it... So she simplified it further just in case before looking at the textbook's description for each. SPOILER!!: still calculations + description So...they were kinda the same either way really. But how true were they for her family? She chewed her lip as she thought about it for a few moments before scribbling down an interpretation. SPOILER!!: full calculations/description/interpretation paper Once she was finished, she laid her quill down on her desk and leaned back to stretch her legs out a little, waiting for whatever would come next. |

sorry....semi-meltdown :( Kurumi stared at her parchment, quill in hand, and felt as though all the breath had left her body. She looked around as everyone began calculating their family numbers...but it wasn't as easy as that for her. Her father, the man she loved and grew up admiring so much, wasn't who he said he was. There was no person named Charles Hollingberry, at least, not one that had a birth certificate. No, her father had faked his own death years before she was born, changed his name, and run away to Japan to work. He had even changed his appearance slightly...Kurumi didn't know who he was...or who she was anymore. Hollingberry...or...the other name... Tears already stinging her eyes, Kurumi put her hood over her head when she saw her hair turning a dark slate blue. She could control the changes for the most part these days, but explosions of intense emotion were still impossible. Leaning forward now so that he face was hidden a bit, Kurumi began to calculate... SPOILER!!: imagine shaky handwriting and tears smudges Hands shaking, Kurumi looked to her textbook and read the description aloud in a low whispered as her voice showed how she was feeling inside. "You inherit an independent spirit, a forceful nature, a strong will, and the ability to come up with original ideas." Frowning even more, she wasn't sure this fit her at all. She was not very independent, nor was she forceful by nature. Strong willed? Perhaps...but the rest did not seem to fit. Hands shaking even more now, Kurumi found herself unable to see for a moment due to the tears. Picking up her quill again, Kurumi began another calculation. SPOILER!!: imagine shaky handwriting and tears smudges times like ten Using the sleeve of her robe to wipe away tears now, Kurumi returned her blurred gaze to the textbook. Your greatest growth will come from compassion and forgiveness. Her hair finished its metamorphosis to dark slate blue and Kurumi clutched the hood of her robe tightly as she read the sentence over and over and over again. Forgiveness...compassion...all things she had wanted from her mother who refused to so much as look at her without her brown colored contacts in. All because she was a witch...all because she was different...Then there was her father who had taken extreme steps in his life to protect himself and his family...but why? How could Kurumi forgive without answers? Unable to take it anymore, Kurumi buried her face in her arms and sobbed softly. |

Everyone seemed to be working fine. She glanced at the girl next to her and noticed her page was full of smuges. Her hood was up and she was... crying? "Hey, are you alright?" she asked worried. She'd never spoken to the girl, but she coudn't be much older than her, and she was crying! She had help if possible! |
Jake was no idiot. He'd seen that Kurumi girl around, and she was definitely NOT as chipper as usual. He could see her hands shaking... he'd been keeping an eye on her. "Kurumi?" Jake called softly over. He'd move if the mood struck him. "D'you need a hand?" he asked her, decidedly not calling attention to anything. The young man bit his lip. What did he say? That's right. Families = teh suck. |

She frowned. "You asked me a question? I think I mustn't have heard you. What is it?" |

A little shocked that his Mother's name was not to be used in the equation, Patroclus selected a new piece of parchment and wrote out his surname, then began to assign each letter it's corresponding number. Then it was simplify time! SPOILER!!: Patroclus' Parchment Look back over the parchment, Patroclus couldn't help but smile; it was true his family was perfect! |
quick post Chief, you know why Salander has been sitting quietly behind Lexi, chin resting on one hand and the other holding a quill at the ready but the parchment has been nice and spotless for a good while now. He had finally managed to shift his eyes from the pretty blonde bob in front of him when he heard a soft, sobbing somewhere off to his side. All he could see was a small, hooded figure and had no clue who it was until he heard Jake whisper out... Kurumi? Now why was she crying? He frowned, deciding to try to speak with the young Gryffindor after class. He shifted his eyes back to front to try to figure out where the lesson was currently at. Ok something about families and crunching numbers. Someone said Families Suck. Well heck Salander agrees 101%. So apparently they need to code their family names and get the meanings. Simple enough he mused as he began to scribble earnestly on his parchment SPOILER!!: Salander's Parchment He dropped the quill back onto his parchment, leaned back into his seat and resumed staring at the lovely blonde locks that bobs from time to time in front of him. |
Text Cut: Zoerawrr Professor Hadley walked around the classroom, checking on the students calculations and skimming their interpretations. "Yes I could see this Jake. Fun loving, optimistic. Total sense of humor." As if his 'families suck' comment wasn't enough. "Just remember that these may just be themes present in your life. They don't have to run your life, but just underlying messages." Text Cut: Hera "Good, good. Curiosity runs thick in Ravenclaw veins, if I may say so." She had Eagles in her family, so she would know. "Actually curiosity runs parallel to your ravenous thirst for knowledge." Text Cut: Nordic Witch Suddenly, without warning, Professor Hadley gave a loud whistle. "We have here, our first master number!" Except the Gryffindor Prefect was clearly oblivious that she even had one. "You my dear... The Connolly family name is actually an eleven, not just a two. This number indicates your ability to encourage and inspire others. It realls is no wonder you're a prefect. Truly, living up to the family name." Text Cut: RachieRu It sounded a lot like a Ravenclaw, if Josephina was being honest with herself. And honestly, when wasn't she? "Original thinker, eh? So I guess you do got some knowledge up there in that noggin of yours." Oh Finn... you're so fun to pick on. "But yes, just remember though that these underlying themes applicable to specific areas of your life. So while they might seem general, it is up to you determine how they apply to specific areas of your life." To that she directed the whole class, not just the Ravenclaw Prefect. Text Cut: Nixy! Another original thinker, eh? And interesting how they were both prefects. "Very good... I'm guessing that your Slytherin ambition and cunning nature will run parallel to the forceful nature that comes with being a Beaumont. Not to mention being a prefect will help to enhance your independence and strong will." It sounded good anyway. Text Cut: Roselyn Uh ... "Evelyn dear?" Professor Hadley approached and squatted down to the level of the girl's desk so she could look her in the eye. But then suddenly she heard something about Josh wanting to get married to her? "I think, if it means anything, then you have inherited the fun-loving, optimistic nature of your family name. And I'm sure some of your friends would agree." Not Josh, but Destiny and Marie for sure. "And it doesn't matter truly if your family members don't seem to fit this number. Just remember that these are general themes. They aren't laws. They aren't even set in stone. So ... Er, do me a favor? Don't rush into marrying someone just because you like they're family name number better. That's hardly a reason to get married." Oh yes, take it from her, the perpetually single, almost thirty year old professor. Text Cut: Macavity "Leadership and organization, eh, Captain Bennett?" Josephina asked, looking over his parchment. "Well then I suppose that's a good thing Professor Vindictus selected you as captain, eh?" Perhaps that clueless jock DID know a thing or two about numbers. Or was it just mere coincidence? Whatever. Point is that maybe he wasn't so ... brainless. Text Cut: Anna Banana "Self discipline ... Well Sierra, that seems to work. Particular as a slytherin, or for your brother as well, because if you ever want to get anywhere in life and I'm pretty sure your father would want you to, then you'd need discipline. Thoroughness. Important trends for both yourself as a Slytherin and your brother." There father would not be let down if they followed the themes in their family name number. Text Cut: Zebragirl "It means basically that you learn toward the stricter side of things. The more mature or responsible side, if you will. You want to help people because you feel that its necessary. It's the right thing to do, so you strive to do right." Mmhm. Maybe. "Family oriented also could reflect on your biological or chosen family, despite using your biological surname to calculate the number. Just think about that one." Text Cut: HaRoHeGiNeLu "You ... are quite the original thinker. I could see that already, if nothing else, but like mentioned to some of your classmates, the Ravenclaw in you." Hadley explained. "Independence is hard to see at such a young age, but I am sure that theme will follow you through your Hogwarts years." Text Cut: Lottiepot "Precisely. I couldn't have interpreted the number better myself." The Head Girl really did have a grasp on this stuff and if she kept it up, she'd do fine on her NEWT exams. Text Cut: The1HBIC "Like Prefect Carmicheal said, that family oriented bit doesn't have to pertain to your actual family. It could pertain to your chosen family. Or even the future... though probably years away ... the family you will soon raise and love of your own." Scary thoughts those were, even to her. Text Cut: Lara_the_Firelady" "Josh Carter! Please. Settle down. No one is proposing in my class based off numbers." Hadley said, eyes ready to bulge from their sockets. "Your master number does not mean you are the master of everything. Just because you got a master number in your calculation doesn't not mean ANYTHING of the sort. NO! But rather, your family name has the power to give you the abilities to inspire and encourage others. That does not mean you know everything. At all." Ugh. Can someone please stick a pin in his big head and deflate it a bit? Text Cut: Walrus Now here was a kid Josh could learn from. "Captain Blunt! Problem solver, eh? Like figuring out some plays for the Ravenclaw Quidditch team?" Perhaps a touchdown would do it. Heh. "Just remember though these are themes that may apply to specific scenarios in your life. They themselves are hardly specific, but it is your interpretation that makes them unique to you." Text Cut: grangerfan8 Same thing for you, Miss Lovegoods. Heh. Josephina was beginning to wonder slightly if some of these kids were copying off their neighbors. Had it not been for the unique last names, she might have believed it. "Helper... family-oriented. Very ... Hufflepuff." Yup, no other way to really describe it. Text Cut: ArianaBlack EEK! Another oblivious student! What was it with Gryffindors and being oblivous to master numbers?! That called for another loud whistle on the part of the Professor. "Miss Adler dear, you've got the master number 22!! Which means you're not a four, but your family name number actually follows a different description. You have the ability to build things that will benefit large groups... The skills of leadership and good work ethic. Endurance. Traits that are admirable in a Gryffindor as well, if I may say so." Text Cut: jengirls109 "Of course. Like I said to Miss Greingoth over there, it's a very hufflepuff number as well as Slytherin. Being the thorough and cautious person that you are ... it will get you far in life, i reckon. Just remember to not be TOO cautious, because there is such a thing." Text Cut: scarsandtetris At first Josephina was not sure the girl had fully gotten the activity as she wrote down other attributes about the number seven, but none pertaining to the family name number. "Yes ... desire for knowledge. Very much a Ravenclaw attribute. You love to learn and thrive on facts and theories, but have a thirst for spiritual understanding as well. Very nice." Text Cut: Snape'sGirlThru&Thru Oh good. Another student who figured out they had a master number, but at least Vashti wasn't so ... conceited about it. Perhaps Josh's family number was really an eight in disguise; yup, inflated ego, totally him. "Yes Vashti. Couldn't have explained it better myself. You've got the right idea." Text Cut: sweetpinkpixie Um ... ... Was it just her or was Kurumi sobbing?! Oh. Oh. Perhaps they needed something sweet BEFORE they went off gallivanting. "Kurumi..." Professor Hadley said gently, touching her arm. "I'm sorry. I'm here... if you wanted to talk. Sometime." Because someone was clearly bothering the young girl. Something that Hadley wasn't sure she could begin to understand, but empathize no doubt she could do that. Text Cut: Luinevaug "Another cautious and thorough student," Josephina said outloud, as she glanced at the next student's parchment. "It will take you far though... that sense of thoroughness. The hard work. The discipline. You'll see. Just keep working hard and it'll pay off in the end." Maybe. Text Cut: PattyH. See Josh! Even Patroclus and his perfect family wasn't being all smug and conceited and bragging! "Subtle pride. I like that. And your interpretation. Very nice, Prefect Hudson." You make Gryffindors proud. Looking at the whole class to address for another moment, she smiled. "You're all doing fairly well. Continue to work on your interpretations of your family name numbers for a few more minutes before we move on... Remember that the textbook interpretations are general and it is up to you as arithmancers to apply specific twists to those textbook meanings and make them personalized and unique for you." |

Should I tell her? Go ahead. She is your best friend. Get out! Sorry. "I'm not sure how exactly to word this, but my brother Henry, the Ravenclaw who graduated last term; he's a very...accomplished Legimilens. That basically means he can read people's mind. Legimilency is another branch of magic, one they don't normally teach here, and one most people never master any part of. Not as if it's necessary such as Charms, though, so that's perfectly all right. Anyway, he's started teaching me somewhat, and every once in a while, he'll sort of..put his own thoughts into my head, and I'm sort of able to do the same, since he'll read my thoughts. He knows how difficult our family situation is for me, and he watches out for me. He's basically my father, even though he's my brother and he's only six years older than I am. So, a lot of the time when I seem spaced out, I'm not daydreaming, I'm talking to my brother. In my head. Sometimes I am just daydreaming, though." She giggled then looked at Jaina inquisitively. "Do you understand, somewhat?" Quote:

Family. Oh, yes, he'd kept quiet about this on purpose. Totally, ON PURPOSE. Though, he completely adored his family, he still haven't figured out some things about a certain relative of him. So, yeah, better not to draw attention until he knew where he stood in said matter. So, yes, well...he began to write. Quote:
More blinking. Well, that explains their need to keep Gilderoy in the dark. SPOILER!!: Interpretation A little interpretation for sure, because his mind was entirely unfocused thinking many things. Involving the family, that is. Especially the last bit. He ought to learn from it, certainly. But dedicating to research was something he very much loved. No problem in figuring stuff out, then. |
and all you concerned people *snuggles* Quote:
Kurumi did raise her head a bit when she felt someone touching her arm and she looked up to see the concerned expression of Professor Hadley looking down at her. "S-S-Sorry for interrupting class, P-P-Professor," Kurumi said bowing her head in apology and drying her eyes with the sleeve of her robe. Taking a quick peak around, Kurumi saw that there were several other students with concerned faces and she quickly turned her gaze back to her parchment where they remained on a single word: lies. "I'm...just having some family issues at the moment and...calculating my family number is a bit overwhelming..." She adjusted her arm so that her second calculation was covered, but it was probably too late to keep those numbers from Professor Hadley's sharp gaze. |

Hmm...get anywhere in life? Of course she wanted to get somewhere in life. She nodded once to the professor before turning back to her parchment. Okay, so maybe self-discipline isn't such a bad thing after all. Sometimes it pays to think before you act and figure out what would be best for you in the long run. So now her parchment read: ...but hard work isn't really the only way to work. For example, if someone does something for you, then you really didn't have to do any of the work yourself--they did all your work for you. Now I do think Greingoth's--well, some of us--have been known to be cautious. For example, seeing other people smiling makes me think they're up to something. This is one of the main reasons I'm so leery of Okay, so maybe self-discipline isn't such a bad thing after all. Sometimes it pays to think before you act and figure out what would be best for you in the long run. Conclusion: I |
Jake: *keeps talking until something that comes out of mouth makes sense* Jake glanced over at Kurumi and then at Hadley. This session needed lightning up. "I, for one, know that no family situation is perfect. I mean... also, look at the word. It's fam... which sounds like ham... which..." Uhh... new track? "Family sounds like... gravity. It ALSO sucks." BAM! Who cared that gravity didn't actually suck. "Nobody... NOBODY has an ideal family situation. I mean, come on. I'm on my third or fourth surname, and I've had a bunch of foster families. The number of which is bigger than a hippogriff's hindquarters. AND even when you're set, that can still go wrong. My parents split, so where does that put me? Confusions, man. Just stick with the friends as a family. Too bad there's no surname for that." NEXT TIME... Jake was gonna go with a totally made up surname. "Just sayin'." |
Quote:
'My family is also very boring and strict, so I would also agree with this.' Yep, pritty much. Then, she thought about what the teacher had said. Well she really cared for her friends, so she was family-oriented in that way. She sat twirling her quill again, while people worked. Might as well work out her adoptive name then. She sighed and started to write again. Quote:

Text Cut: Steelsheen Continuing her circling around the classroom, Professor Hadley nearly missed Salander, as he was writing so dutifully. Backtracking to him a bit, she smiled as she skimmed over his work. "Yes, you've got the right idea," And at least you're not conceited about the master number bit. "Except that spiritual living doesn't have to pertain to religiousness. It could simply be about believing. And who doesn't want to believe? In something? Even just a little..." Chew on that one for a little while, eh? Text Cut: scarsandtetris ... and jengirls109 too I suppose Just as she was about to move onto another Slytherin's parchment, she overhead bits of the conversation two first years were having and frowned, creases forming subtly on her forehead. "Um sorry to interrupt, but Miss Kelley?" Fina paused, trying to search for the right words. "Could you perhaps visit my office after the lesson? Not a bad thing, just a concern..." She reassured the young Ravenclaw. "You could bring Miss Maloney too, if you like" Quote:
Text Cut: Mordanyes "Dear... Make sure you look at the interpretation for number six according to chapter 27. Not simply general characteristics about the number six." She paused, turning the girls' book to the appropriate page. "Similar, but you'll see there that you inherit the conservative attitude about helping others because it's responsible. Stubborn streak, yes, very Slytherin..." Heh. Text Cut: Lockhartian "Yes... yes... very nice Treyen! And you didn't think you had the aptitude for Arithmancy..." Hadley mused, smiling at him. "You've got all the right ideas down though about your family name number. And Lockhart too... Very famous name." In other words, high expectations for you, young boy. Text Cut: sweetpinkpixie Oh dear ... Kurumi's quietness and blubbering was making Hadley want to TEAR UP! Drawing a deep breath to keep her cool as best as possible, she gave the second year a comforting smile. "No... No dear... Just... it's harder on some people I guess than others." She noticed the girl adjusting her arm to cover up the parchment. "We don't have to talk about your family number unless you want to. When you're ready, you let me know." Pause. Awkward. Hadley bit her lower lip cautiously, before proceeding. "If you'd like to leave... if it's making you that uncomfortable, you can leave. I won't take it personally and it's with my permission. But if you do stay, then I think you'll find most of the personal family discussions are nearing its finish." Because while some of them might have personal connections to their destination, it wouldn't be like this. No, it would be more positive... hopefully. Text Cut: Hera "Very nice. You know, even though it was never your family name, you might also see some common themes in your own life represented by your mother's family name." Fina nodded at the Ravenclaw girl, approvingly. Might was the keyword though. Text Cut: Anna Banana Passing by Sierra's desk again, she smiled as the girl seemed to make some slight adjustments in her interpretation. It would be interesting to see how her brother would interpret their last name... perhaps next year he'll opt to take Arithmancy class. Text Cut: Zoerawrr Somehow, despite Jake's attempts to cheer up the situation, Professor Hadley wasn't finding his words all that comforting. It didn't change the fact that ideal family situations didn't exist But he was write on one thing. "Yes... Gravity. Good metaphor. Because gravity does suck in keeping us down on Earth and grounded..." Hmm... possibilities here. "Much like families do. Or at least have the potential to do." Maybe. Yes Jake. You were onto something. Just not what you thought. Text Cut: Zebragirl Striding by another Emily's desk again as she heard a thank you, Professor Hadley couldn't help but notice something in common between the two Emily's. Despite the differing houses they were both overachievers in calculating another family name. "Very nice. You know though that you shouldn't be so shocked by the influence your adoptive family has on you. The family name number, as mentioned before uncovers truths in your surname, whether this be your birth name, adopted name, or eventually your married name. It reveals information about traits of that family, which if you recall about families, are passed down to you. Whether you realize it or not." |

He meant, like... sucked in a bad way. LIKE. The fact that HIS family sucked so much he'd been taken away by social services buuuuut... "OOOH! My Lawson family grounded me a few times, that's true." A Lawson TRAIT? CHARACTERISTIC. It was all coming together. |
