It's a very comprehensive list, Charley, Henry interjected. Charley could hear that he sounded as if he were about to cry. She herself was welling up as she was forced to think about all the turbulence and tension they had in their family.
I know, I know. But with everything we've gone through, there are probably more cons.
There was a longer stretch of silence between them before Henry responded.

While Henry was part of her biological family, they were much closer than she was to other members, and ever since their father left, he'd taken over as the male head of household, to the chagrin of Charley's other older brother, Nathaniel. Henry was the only father figure their seven-year older Andrew had ever had.
Charley physically hurt to think about the weeks following her parents' split. Her chest tightened, her stomach felt uneasy, her heartbeat sped up, and she had a blasting headache, though that surely was influenced by communicating with Henry.
With a sudden burst of unfortunate inspiration from their conversation, she elaborated even more.

Cons of Biological Family:
5. If they leave, they leave roles in the family that need to be filled.

ooc: sorry for the very long post. I haven't been able to attend to every class consistently enough. Plus poor Charlotte has some intense father issues.
Jaina smiled at Charley. "I don't think that's a con as far as I'm concerned." She meant it, too. It never mattered that they weren't biologically related to her. The fact that they were there was enough for her. She knew her parents wouldn't approve of her friends, and that didn't matter to her either.

She watched Charley as she made her list. She kinda looked like she was off in thought. She even heard her giggle. When she saw her writing, she thought she'd ask. "Charley, what are you doing when you go off in thought like that? It's like you're deep in thought but somewhere else. It's ok if you don't want to tell me. I was just curious."

"I'm not sure if it's just me.. but Im seeing a trend in the pro's and con's.. I mean family is family and they share common pro's and con's whether or not they are biological or other."

Families? Hmm. Cedric for one had a lot to say about families. He was a part of a great, though rather small, family! He wasn't really sure where they were headed to in this class by talking about families but he guessed he should just do as their teacher say. It wouldn't hurt to do so anyway.

"Thank you." she smiled, taking the quill and giving a good once over. Seemed ordinary to her, and she hadn't dropped down dead or anything so it wasn't poisoned. Not like Sierra would do that, HA! Just...just being cautious.

Writing the first few words at the top of a new page in her...Ancient Runes notebook, ugh, the Slytherin girl paused for a moment before flipping the page and writing the same thing down before creating the lines and whatnot- OMG! The quill just turned BLUE!

...

Giggle.

It turned bluuueee. That was so awesome. Before she could get distracted anymore what the color changing quill, Evelyn quickly stared jotting random things down in the columns as they appeared in her mind. The trouble was though, she was trying not to get angry as she wrote them down.

Rae was sitting silently, and perhaps got a bit more silent when she head what they were listing. She hated talking about family, it just brought bad memories and a sense of loneliness. Her head turned around the room just looking at the people jotting down their pros and cons. Then there was Evelyn, her parents were different in many ways from Rae's. But they both ended up the same way in the same house, there was also similarities in that way. So Rae decided that instead of writing down the things that hurt, (since there weren't many pros in her mind) She will just write down what her friend did.

Rae wasn't sitting too far away from her, maybe a table away. She took a glance at Evelyn's paper, not trying to hide or anything, Ev must know why Rae would use her answers anyways.

This was like...REAL LIFE. Like...why were they kept out of it? Ellie wanted to KNOW if things were going to affect her.

"It might be hard to see now, but even if you're abused by your family, then they still love you. They themselves just likely have insecurities that they take out on you because it helps them feel in control." Ugh, who knew that this would be such a touchy topic with the students these days?

-Other family members may be jelous/dislike you for 'intruding' in their family

Kurumi thought for a moment. "Professor, do we find it by adding our father and mother's family's names together?" That made sense to her at least. Just using her father's last name seemed unfair since it wasn't only his blood running through her veins.

FAMILY OF FRIENDS AND ROLE MODELS
PROS:
- You choose who your friends are, and who it is you look up to.
- These people came into your life because they chose to be there, not because they had to be there.
- They care for you and care what happens to you.
- You love your friends for who they are, not because you HAVE to, and vice versa.
- They like you because you ARE you and want to know you
- They accept you for who you are.
- They are fun to be with.
- They are great listeners / Emotionally present
- They're always there for you / Stick with you until the end
- They're loyal
- You always seem to have more in common, therefore more fun with friends
- You can trust them and know (sometimes) they have something in common with you, so they can relate.

- Friend cheer you up and help you get through tough situations
- Can assume roles of absent members of biological family
- Always willing to lend a helping hand
- They are someone who you can go to about anything
- When you need someone to be there they are never far away

- You aren't being judged 24/7.
- You are the one that chooses who stays or goes, instead of being stuck with people you don't like.

CONS:
- Friendships can break up much easier than biological families.
- Sometimes they drift apart from you and there is nothing you can do about it. People change.
- If you hurt them, they'll go away forever / Because they don't have to be in your life, they may leave you for good if something bad (argument, divorce, etc.) ever happens.
- You can choose the wrong friends/role models
- Not your biological family
- Might not be accepted by your biological family
- They all suck.
- Their intentions for having you might be bad
- might try to mold you to their taste
- They have their own family already / sense of not belonging

Adoptive Family
Pros
-They chose you, so therefore must WANT you
-They're fair and understanding
-They actually want to know you
-They need you like you need them. To them, your not an accident.
-They can act like a normal family

Cons
-Can turn into/like your old family
-Arn't actually your real parents. (They never gave birth to you) so in that sence, you'll never belong to them
-Other family members may be jelous/dislike you for 'intruding' in their family
- They all suck.

Ellie was uber excited by this. She even sat straighter in her chair. Then Hadley ruined it with 'calculation'.

SIGH.

She'd almost forgot this was Arithmancy. With math. And other uselessness she didn't understand. "Is it your last name alone? Added and simplified and..." arithmancy-ed, "stuff." She'll still try, though.

Emily listened to the Professor's reasoning, and though she was right, there were exceptions to the rule. Emily didn't respond, instead she turned to chaper two of her text book....

"Is it a matter of using your biological name- fathers side of course and simplifying it... then doing to same to your mothers biological name and then adding the two together and simplifying that?" she asked... hoping she made sense.

Luin had taken down her notes with her pros and cons and then listened to the professor as she spoke of the family name number. She thought on it for a little while, then tentatively raised her hand in order to answer, "Well..the pythagorean system assigns a number to each letter in the given last name and they are all added together. Although sometimes that would make for a fairly large number, depending upon the name, so perhaps it is divided by the total letters or something?"

This was probably her favorite Arithmancy ever... because it was about family. Arya LOVED her family, and those friends that were close to her heart. Which would explain why she had difficulty coming up with Cons for both lists. Brown eyes on the professor and the other students, she listened for how to calculate this new number.

Samira smiled as she heard the assignment. She didn't think that she was going to enjoy arithmancy at first, but family was one of her favorite topics. Quickly scribbling a line down the middle, Samira began writing the pros and cons of a biological family.

Pros:
1. Will always be there for you
2. Will always love you
3. You'll know that they will always be there by your side no matter what
4. With family, you are assured that they are your family forever, unlike friends
5. they can give you help and guidance in life

Cons:
1. You can't pick your family
2. You must follow their rules, even if you don't agree
3. They usually don't allow you to fight back without a punishment
4. they can sometimes neglect you or abuse you and you can't get away
5. They can choose favorites

Pros and cons of unbiological family:
Pros
1. they give the best, honest advice
2. They are your shoulder to cry on
3. You can choose your friends, and they choose you, so you can make sure it is the right choice
4. the adventures!

cons:
1. fights or boys can easily break friends up
2. they may not like your other choices of friends, therefore not want to hang out with you
3. they can turn on you with the snap of a finger.

Patroclus loved his family, it was as simple as that. And recently it had become more and more important for them to be close, his mother and Father had both been only children, and both set of Grandparents had moved on, so essentially they were all that was left of their lines.

Turning to the set task, Patroclus had a bit of an issue, his family was his role models, his Mother Father and Brother meant everything to him, and he tired everyday to make them proud and aspired to be like them. However for thr point of the lesson he would just place them in the Biological section!

Oh man... that was confusing. So... Jake could find the Blackly-Upstead name, or he could do the Lawson name... which could confuse people since everyone now knew him as Morgan (or 'that Upstead Lawson Morgan kid').

Shrugging his shoulders though he knew PERFECTLY well how to find that number, Jake quickly scribbled a real list.

Pros:

A lot of the time they do love you unconditionally.

I definitely have these, it's not that I'm not writing because I don't know.

Adoptive family

Pros:

You choose them and they choose you.

Becuse of the care system, if you're treated wrongly, you never have to stay, but that never happened with me.

They love you.


Cons:

You have to legally change your surname which is pure hassle. You wouldn't believe how many times my surname has been legally changed.

You're often stuck with the name your original parents gave you. It's a good job I like my name.

They'll never treasure you like they do when they have their own child.

You'll always be thought of as 'my adoptive son'.

They have no baby pictures of you.

It takes a while to get used to what family is... because things are different.

They break up, just like other families. But in a way, this is worse. You feel for once like you're loved and in a place where you belong. You don't have a broken family and everything will be fine for the rest of your life. But then you go away for a year to be educated by someone, and you come back to find that your parents have split, your mother isn't living in that house anymore and your father won't even speak to you, at least at first. It hurts, but you have to deal with it, like you deal with everything else. Then you find out all the stuff you'd rather not know and end up blanking one of the parents, even though you love them. Their marriage was a mistake, so their adopting a son was definitely a mistake.
He put down his quill, having missed out one section completely, because he wasn't sure what to put. He was busy getting a little too personal on his last one without realising. And getting teary-eyed. But that would go away soon.

Someone loved their family. Josephina had the distinct feeling that Prefect Hudson over there had a loving and supportive upbringing. A household that could almost be considered normal, if there was such a thing.

Omg, she was way too distracted. She was going to ask Sierra for another quill but, well the Professor started speaking and the quill just changed to red. Teehee. It was all Gryffindor like now. Oh crud, it was all Gryffindor like...now. Meh. Darn thing. Turn colors again!

Oooh. The Professor wanted some volunteers. Now Finn had a bit of a dilema. He could either sit back, and like not volunteer himself, or he could be a good prefect and volunteer himself. Now...he did want to try and be a good role model for Ravenclaw, show that he was a good prefect and all that jazz. So he decided that it probably would be a good idea for him to volunteer. As long as he wasn't going to regret it or something, because that would be really bad.

"I'll volunteer Professor." Good Work Carmicheal.

All through the lesson the Gryffindor prefect Connolly had kept her head low and focused on completeing the different tasks set by Professor Hadley. Writing up the pros/cons with her own family had made Sophie think about them more than she had done so far in the term. The brunette even got slightly homesick. When Professor Hadley asked for volunteers Sophie raised her voice from the back of the room. "I'll volunteer professor!" This was probably a stupid move which Sophie would regret later but she genuinly liked Professor Hadley and wanted to give her a hand in the lesson.

Picking up a piece of chalk Emily wrote up the Professor's biological name, then she began to calculate his Family name number.
