Arithmancy Two: Families & Their Name Number

Back to "normal", the Arithmancy classroom had refashioned itself over the few days since the last lesson. The chairs and desks were now arranged in a semi-circle, with the larger desk for Hadley completing the circle. It almost looked like how one might imagine a Kindergarten classroom to appear, minus the large desks with a shelf under them.

Professor Hadley sat perched in the chair at her own desk, her hands placed neatly on top of it. There were however, two items that were normally found in her office which seemed to have made their way to the classroom. If you'd visited the Professors office, you might recognize the faces in the photographs - one containing the Professor herself with her two sisters and the other of her parents.

"Take your seats, we'll begin shortly,"
Hadley said, rather cheerfully.

ooc: The actual lesson will be begin in approximately 14 hours from now. You're welcome to RP your characters entering, but please limit your chattering. You've been warned. Also, if you haven't submitted your homework, you have until the actual lesson opens. (So ~14 hours). They'll be graded over the weekend/next week - for those who have submitted.
The lesson has begun... If you missed RPing your characters entering just pretend like you've been here the whole time. =)

Now this was a class she always looked forward to! Or...she was until she was just outside the classroom and realized she didn't bring a quill and brought the wrong notebook. What...what was this? Some cruel way to get back at her for putting off her Transfiguration homework for so long!?

Cruel world!

Walking into the classroom anyhow, not feeling like walking all the way back to the dungeons from the second floor, the Slytherin sighed at the circle like way the desks were situated before smiling sweetly to the professor. "Good day, Professor Hadley." she said, taking a seat at the desk next to the Professors. Eh, might as well. It was close to the door too so she could stare others down as they came in.

Fun times. Fuuuun times.

Hera 03-04-2011 02:53 PM

Emily dragged her feet, somewhat reluctantly into the classroom. She was incredibly tired, her eyes struggling to stay open.
"Hello Professor Hadley" she said, making the effort to smile.

She sumped into a seat at the front of the class, hoping the proximity to the Professor will keep her awake. She began to take out her writing materials and set them on the desk in front of her.

HaRoHeGiNeLu 03-04-2011 03:01 PM

Since the last lesson was quite successful in Ellie's opinion, she decided to actually attend the next.

"Hii Professor Hadley." LOOK! We're HERE.

Heh.

Ellie walked in and around to the far side of the classroom to take a seat. And yes, her camera was back. BEAM.

SarcasticStrawberry 03-04-2011 03:05 PM

Caroline sluggishly walked into the Artithmancy classroom. Although the most of the time she didn't understand the class, she did her best, and usually worked out good for her. She had to admit that Professor Hadley was one of her favorites this year. She walked by the professor's desk on the way to finding her on seat. "Good Morning, Professor Hadley"Caroline said, gleefullly. She found at seat with no one else around yet and took a seat. She put her bag on the desk and pulled out what she needed for the class, notebook, quill, and textbook. Check check and check. All that was left to do is to wait for class to start.

Ivy Nienna 03-04-2011 07:13 PM

Running, running, running, stopping, trying to stop, skidding.

Bushy tailed and wide eyed, Ivory skidded past the doorway just a tad out of breath. Ooooh, what kind of prefect was she anyway. Running late and interrupting. She'd never keep her badge at this rate.

Lips parting apologetically to excuse herself, she paused just inside of the classroom. The near empty classroom.

"Oh."

Oh, was right. Yes...well...hmmm. It would seem she was not late after all. Staring down incredulously at her charmed wristwatch, she shook her wrist energetically.... as if that alone would make the apparently running fast minute hand drop back. Gah. It would seem glaring at the watch face made no difference. She'd rushed, dressed in a hurry, ran flights of stairs wearing two different socks only to be right on time and maybe even a little early.

Exhaling a sigh that sent her longs bangs up and out of her eyes, she walked all the way into the classroom with a smile towards the woman sitting behind the desk. "Hello, Professor."

Plopping down on one of the front seats, she leaned back slightly. Now to catch her breath and get rid of that ridiculous hammering feeling in her chest that always happened when she woke up late. Or well, 'thought' she woke up late.

Zebragirl 03-04-2011 07:42 PM

Walking into the classroom Emily smiled at the teacher.
"Good day Professor!" Good job she was in a good mood today. The letter was still in her bag!
She bounced to her seat and took out her things. Hopefully the lesson would keep her in this good mood. (They happened only rarely!)

AlwaysSnapesGirl 03-04-2011 08:23 PM

Arithmancy, whoo! It was a class Vashti always liked, and so she was usually in a good mood when there was a lesson. This day was no exception.

She entered the classroom and greeted Professor Hadley with a smile. "Hello, Professor," she said, before quickly finding a seat. She set her bag down on the floor by her seat then pulled out her textbook, quill, and notebook and set them on her desk.

jengirls109 03-04-2011 08:54 PM

Jaina sat down at a desk and said "Hello, Professor." She pulled out her notebook for class, along with her quill, sketch book from Charley, and her drawing pencil. She'd spent all night and most of her free time working on a drawing of an abraxan for Ben and it had to be perfect.

Mordanyes 03-04-2011 09:00 PM

Arithmancy. Not one of K-Lee's favourite subjects. She had never been very good at it, but she atill was giving it a go.

Walking into class, K-Lee sat down on one of the seats. Now remembering she had forgotten to greet the professor, she quickly did so. "Hello professor." she just had to hope the lesson wouldn't be too hard.

Felixir 03-04-2011 09:01 PM

As he entered the room and headed for the back of it, Jake gave Hadley an 'mmmm' of greeting, clearly not in any mood to be anywhere. He sat at the back and siiiiiiighed, as though he NEEDED the rest.

And he did.

With a slight smile, Jake just... sat.

Fred's Girl Courtney 03-04-2011 09:39 PM

Claire walked into arithmancy feeling tired. She never got enough sleep. Oh well. It wasn't going to keep her from doing as well as she could in class. She wouldn't let it. As she walked past the professor's desk, she smiled and said, "Hello, Professor Hadley." It wasn't the most original thing to say, but it was better than saying nothing, right?

sweetpinkpixie 03-04-2011 09:49 PM

Yay for Arithmancy! Perhaps, next to Care of Magical Creatures, it was Kurumi's favorite class because there was almost always a logical answer. It felt refreshing to Kurumi right now to have something constant, something definite, and the feeling probably showed on Kurumi's face as she bounced into the classroom. "Good day, Professor," Kurumi smiled before taking a seat.

The layout of the room confused Kurumi for a moment and the pictures of Professor Hadley's family made her even more so. Thinking about her family was probably one of the last things she wanted to do right now.

Holmesian Feline 03-04-2011 09:54 PM

Ah another day another arithmacy class which was a good thing since Simon fairly enjoyed and did well in the subject so he was looking forward to it. Stepping inside the classroom with his bookbag over his shoulder, he glanced around taking in the layout of the room since it tended to change as well as the students already there. "Hello professor," he greeted with a polite nod before crossing to the other side of the room. Taking a seat at one of the desks and setting his books on top as he waited for class to begin.

Walrus 03-04-2011 10:01 PM

Jacob walked into the arithmancy class, greeting the professor with a loud yawn. He wanted to go to bed, today was going so slowly, and he hadn't gotten enough sleep last night, he had studied for OWLs all last night... today was not a day for anyone to mess with him.

He walked over to a emtpy desk and put his bag down, before dropping himself into the chair, "UGHH!" he groaned loudly and his head smacked down onto the desk, he wasn't really sure when the last time he was so tired.... oh yeah, yesterday.

Stupid OWLs.

Luinevaug 03-04-2011 10:27 PM

Luin walked into the Arithmancy classroom, said, "Hello Professor" then looked around and quickly found a seat at the front of the class. She quickly pulled out her supplies and sat back in her seat, thinking as she twirls her quill with her fingers. This term had been quite a lot of work so far.
She glanced around the room, hmm, they definitely needed more ravvies to participate more, they needed to make up on their points.

pundantic 03-05-2011 03:09 AM

Selina walked into the classroom yawning. She had been up the night before working on practicing her Potion making for Lafay's class. When it hit midnight she had already lost track of time and was well into her study period. Only at that time did she notice how late it was and she scurried off to bed. Now, the morning after, she was feeling the effects of her late night.

She passed the Professor's desk and said, "Morning Professor." Then Selina took her seat and waited for class to begin.

Rosiana Price 03-05-2011 03:53 AM

Elle tied her hair up in a pony before entering. Hair as neat as possible, she chose a seat somewhere in the middle of the class and took out the necessities: notebook, quill and textbook.

But of course, before sitting, she greeted the Professor. "Good morning, Professor Hadley," she said with an earnest smile. "Can't wait for class!"

vijaya 03-05-2011 09:50 AM

Lucy entered the room and saw someone had already taken her seat. oh, she didn't like that, that was so bad. Never mind i'll take the other seat she thought and looked for some better seat. She got a seat and sat there. She looked at Professor and said "Hey Professor, how's the day?" and smiled.

Nixy! 03-05-2011 10:11 AM

Iris walked into the classroom. Arithmancy... the perfect way to start the day, really. Today, she'd scraped her hair back into a pony tail. Being honest, Iris couldn't be bothered with looking as perfect as she could EVERY day. It was too much effort.

Offering Professor Hadley a smile as she entered the room, Iris then walked over to her usual seat, and begun to take her things from her bag. As Iris took her quill out of her bag, she noticed the photos that were in the classroom. She raised her eyebrow slightly, wondering why they might be needed.

Wenzlebug 03-05-2011 10:35 AM

The last lesson sort of bored him. Well, in all fairness to Professor Hadley, almost all of his lessons bored him these days. He needed a boost of some sort, probably a letter from a certain Durmstranger will do, so as to bring his spirit or essence back to his body, so as to stop him from being both a slacker and procrastinator. He was preparing for the upcoming NEWTs, however. And that wasn't really slacker-ish.

Cedric lingered on the threshold of the room for some seconds... for no particular reason but you could say he was just fighting the urge to walk away.

With mustered courage and willingness to do so, he walked into the room and gave the professor a small smile with a "Good day, professor" and then he, of course, walked to his usual seat: the one in the front row.

potterobsessionist 03-05-2011 04:21 PM

Alex walked into the classroom happily. He wasn't late and he wasn't wearing his chicken costume. Yes, it all pointed to the fact that young Mr. Reed was shaping up. Nevermind that it had taken four of his friends to get him out of the chicken suit which he had insisted he would wear to class.

"Good day Professor." he smiled and took a seat. So, right Arthimancy. Numbers and such right? Yay for a class that made him look stupid.

Anna Banana 03-05-2011 04:25 PM

Arithmancy--it was a subject Sierra neither hated nor loved. She was on the fence about it, pretty much. With a rather blank expression on her face, she pushed open the door to the classroom, walked inside, and...

...immediately perked up. Oh, look! Evelyn's here, too! Maybe Arithmancy wouldn't turn out to be so meh after all. It seemed like it'd been weeks since Sierra had seen her older Slytherin friend. Sure, they'd been at Quidditch practice together, but at the same time, practice didn't allow much catching up time, now did it?

Sliding into an open desk next to Evelyn, Sierra turned her attention to her friend. "Hey, Ev," she greeted. She should probably say hello to Hadley, too, right? With a glance up to the front, she added, "Morning, Professor Hadley."

Of course Evelyn would be one of the first, if not THE first to enter the room. "Good day, Miss Flores ... Shepard." She said, still rather cheerfully despite almost forgetting the second half of the girl's name. Somehow though she had the distinct feeling the girl would find today's lesson interesting; what with her having taken on her best friend's name and all.

Oh good!! At least someone had energy!! "Miss Stone! That's wonderful!" Of course it was; and with the redhead here, she was sure that a certain boastful Treyen wouldn't be too far behind.

Right?

I'd hope that if you truly late, you wouldn't think to make such a commotion noting your entrance." Hadley mused at the girl, a smile playing at her lips. "But welcome. Morning."

Another Hufflepuff. Except this one was ... grumpy? Perhaps it was just a form of ... Seventh year-itis? Yup, that had to be it. She wasn't going to disrupt it though. So instead she just gave a friendly smile toward him and moved onto the next student.

"Good day, Miss Hollinberry. Always a pleasure." Hadley said, returning the smile.

And in walked half of the Quidditch Captains; it was nice to see them focusing on some definitive and logical classes, in addition to just Quidditch.

Except... Err ... Why was Jacob groaning? Did he get a splinter or something? Wouldn't surprise Hadley in the least.

"Captain Bennett? Would you mind seating yourself near your fellow Captain? Keep an eye on him and make sure he's alright. I don't want to have to bother the Healer for something that might be prevented."

Odd question. "Hello dear. The day?" Hadley paused, contemplating the question. "It's a clear, sunny day in March." Duh. If you looked out the window you could tell that.

Another quiet one, but this one was a prefect. Offering a return smile back at the girl, Professor Hadley just hoped she was handling alright. She imagined the girl had a lot on her mind, even if she didn't have any major exams to take this year.

Just as Professor Hadley was about to close the door, two young Slytherins slipped in. "Good morning Mr Reed. Miss Greingoth." She said, acknowledging the two young snakes, before flicking her wand at the door, which closed.

"Well I guess we might as well start, as seems like many of you are present. Now I assure while the first part of the lesson might seem dull, it will hopefully get better. So bear with me." She paused letting this sink in for a moment.

"For those of you who have been to my office, you might have seen these photographs I brought with me today. They are indeed, my family. There is a lot of changes happening in the wizarding world, much of your views about the world, your beliefs might be influenced by your family. Your backgrounds. I'm not here to change that, but I am here to remind you to keep an open mind. Remember that while you love your family, they might not always be right. You have to do what is right and develop your own ideas and beliefs.

So before I go further... What is family? Who are they? What does it mean to you as a person? To who you will become?"

Felixir 03-05-2011 05:09 PM

UGH.

REALLY?!

Jake full on SCOWLED. Was she RUBBING IT IN?!

The young man raised his hand and said in only a sliiiiiiiiiiiiiightly furious manner: "Families are not fixed, and they don't HAVE to influence your views. Also, they suck. Families can go... fly a kite."

Except his dad. His dad was cool. And Jake was not bitter at all. PFFYEARIGHT.

Lottiepot 03-05-2011 05:11 PM

Family?

Trixie raised her hand at the question, though it was quite a hard one to answer, it was all down to a matter of opinion after all wasn't it? "I think there are two types of family. The first is your blood family, those that are related to you and offer you all the support and kindness and care for you no matter what and you love them with all of your heart. Like my parents, I'd say they were the closest family I have, as well as my cousins" A few of which resided in this school. "I think these are the types of people that are likely to change your opinion at a younger age for they have more influence upon you. But the Head Girl also had a differing opinion. "However, I think I also have another family. Managed to convince her to distract the Whomping Willow whilst he attempted to chop a branch off. "...That perhaps your family might not be able to do. They can change who you are likely to become as much as blood family can." And that was what family meant to her.

Felixir 03-05-2011 05:16 PM

Jake looked at the head girl, finding himself calming down... slightly. See... that was what HE said.

"You see... what I did there is I encapsulated that answer into a nice bite-sized morsel," he said to the Professor with a firm little nod.

Clearly

Emily did as the Professor instructed, straightening up in her seat... it seemed to help, even if it was just a little bit.

Family.... thought Emily. Family was not her favourite subject, particularly lately. What with her parents' high expectations, lack of affection and endless criticism.
Emily raised her hand nonetheless.
"Family... usually refers to a persons biological heritage- so parents and grand parents so to speak. However it is not limited to biology. Close friends and non-blood-related releatives may also be considered family. Families also come in various shapes and sizes and whilst we may not all get along with one another at the best of times, we are... for the most part, a constant presence in each others lives, and we are there to support one another when we are needed most. Unless you are unfortunate enough to have a 'family' biological or other that wish bad things to happen to you... in which case you're better off without them."

Emily often thought she'd be better off without her parents, but when push came to shive she knew deep down her parents cared about her. They cared about her enough to set her up with a handsome, rich, pure-blood wizard whom she wasn't in love with, forcing her into a marriage she didn't belive in... but that was the last thing she wanted to think about.

Looking down at her parchment she wrote a single word:
Family.

"Ellie." She liked Hadley when liking a professor seemed rare for her these days... Well... she only disliked one, but whatever. She wanted the professors she liked to call her by the name she liked. Not 'Miss Stone' that was far too formal.

...Changes to the wizarding world? Sure, Ellie'd noticed the changes at Hogwarts but, the whole Wizarding world? She was unaware of this. Is this what you get for being cooped up at school? Geeeez.

Emily's smile vanished. They were gonna talk about FAMILY!
She opened her book and stared at the page. Not reading, just staring.
"A family is supposed to be there for you. They're supposed to care and support you." Emphasis on the word supposed.
"But that dosen't all ways happen. In fact, it rarely happens."
Well, she didn't know this. She was probably wrong, but that was what her family was like.
Ok. She was going to stop talking now. 'Just look at the page and hopefully they'd get off the family topic.'

RachieRu 03-05-2011 05:32 PM

What were families? Finlay frowned, poking a hole throw his parchment. "Families are annoying." His one was anyway. Well actually really it was only his parents that were annoying, his siblings were pretty cool. Although he did think after speaking that his answer probably wasn't the best answer to the question. "I think family comes under two definitons though. The ones you pick, like your friends, and then the idiots ones that you are stuck with." That was a good answer right?

Except his dad. His dad was cool. And Jake was not bitter at all. PFFYEARIGHT.

Well she figured she might get some response like this, but Hadley had not expected it to be the first one spoken. "You are correct ... On some level. Families don't have to influence your views. But I think that the idea of family does not suck. It might not be your biological family, but everyone has someone they can count on, rely on, learn from. THAT is family too."

For example if your family were say, Vegans, then they'd most likely want you to be a Vegan too and therefore your opinion has been influenced already" she stated.

Or as the Head Girl just said that in a nice mini-novella sized speech. Geez, the girl could talk! It was no wonder Tate selected her for Head Girl... "Precisely. Families come in all kinds of colors and shades. There is the family you are born into, as you mentioned, and the family you grow into."

Clearly

No need for bitter retorts, Jacob.

"Yes, yes, of course, Jake. But the Head Girl here, she elaborated the answer for those who might not be able to pick up on that bite-sized morsel." Nothing wrong with elaboration. When succinct. Oh what an oxymoron.

At least they all were on the right track. No one seemed to be disagreeing on the idea of two families developing in your lives over time.

Nodding at the girl, she smiled. "Yes your close friends. But just as you should be open minded about views presented your way in the media, you need to be open about your friends. Not picky or selective, but well, just open. You never know who you might meet with that openness." Mmmhm. Not that she was picking on Evelyn or anything, but she knew that Slytherins in particular tended to have this superior view of themselves, limiting their sight.

"I'm not sure you're ever really better off without your biological family. Even if they don't seem right to you, they are your family. And some day, maybe not today or tomorrow ... or next week, but some day, you will appreciate them." Maybe.

Jake ACTUALLY glared for a moment. He had an angry little moment in which he almost said 'are you saying my answer wasn't good enough' or even 'are you saying I'M THICK' even though he KNEW she wasn't saying that.

With an annoyed HUFF (he WAS a Hufflepuff after all) Jake sat back in his chair.

"Professor... I know of a few people in the class with adoptive families. Like... literally adopted into them. Which section do they go under?" A third one?

Professor Hadley blinked up at the boy, who seemed rather ... annoyed? By something? Um ...

"Adoptive families are a part of you too. So you could either make a third section for that OR swap it out for one of the first two sections." Yup. Give them a choice for where it fits best. "You decide where it seems to fit best, or if you're better off making a third category, that's fine too."

Lottiepot 03-05-2011 06:20 PM

CH'YEAH Jake..!!

Trixie resisted the urge to poke out her tongue at him, she didn't want to look so immature and she would have smirked but the fact he was glaring at the Professor made her giggle. The huff was just the icing on the cake. The Head Girl instead chose to simply raise her eyebrow at him and then turned back to the Professor with a smile.

Now what was that task they were supposed to be doing?

A list of pro's and con's to do with biological and other family. She took her notebook and quill out of her bag and set them up on the table.

Ehh.. What about the ones that went over both of the categories? She was pretty certain there WERE things that her family did that her friends could too.

MistressofDawn 03-05-2011 06:24 PM

Victoria nodded as she pulled out a piece of parchment and a quill. As she drew a line down the middle, she began to think of what could be pros or cons for blood-related families. Hm...She closed her eyes, trying to think of ideas.

Felixir 03-05-2011 06:31 PM

Jake hadn't been looking at the Head Girl, so he didn't catch any of that. Instead, he was already leaning over his parchment. He'd divided it into two columns and three rows. The rows were labeled with the types of family, and the columns with 'pros' and 'cons'.

Immediately, on the one for 'adoptive family' and 'friends and role models' he put you can choose them in the pro section.

But then immediately wrote you can choose wrongly in the con section for the both of them.

Oh dear, what an angsty piece of parchment.

With a small, kind of upset frown, he got to work even more.

Nixy! 03-05-2011 07:36 PM

Catching up all together. ^_^

Iris looked at the professor as she started her lesson. She listened, and kept quiet. She listened to all the other students answer her question. But she stayed quiet. Iris didn't offer her answer.

Family.

It was a subject that Iris didn't know the answer to.

What was her family?

Her mum and her brother. That was it. Grandparents? Aunts and uncles? She didn't know what it was to have those. They'd all disowned her before she was even born. Her dad? He left too. For some woman at work, who was younger than her mum.

Yeah. Family. It's a cheerful topic for Iris.

By the time the prefect had found her voice to try and put together some kind of answer, the class had moved on. Picking up her quill, Iris scribbled down some form of an answer. She could give it to Professor Hadley with the rest of her work at the end of the lesson... that way, she'd still be able to get some kind of credit. As she wrote, Iris listened to the other people who were talking.
SPOILER!!: parchment
Your family is the people who are biologically related to you. They should be the people who teach you right from wrong and who should love you. They should be the people you can always depend on, no matter what. At Christmas, all of your family should come together and spend the holiday with each other. A family should be nothing less than two parents, siblings and grandparents. They're what you need to grow up to your full potential. Before you go to school, they should teach you everything. Your parents and grandparents how to love and read. Your cousins how to climb trees and fly kites.

To me, "family" is just a word. A stupid one at that. My 'family' disowned me, because my parents moved to England. They had a change of heart 4 years ago, but then decided that they were going to re-disown me because I refused to leave Hogwarts. My 'family' are so closed minded that they've never loved me, and only ever acknowledged me once. I haven't called someone "dad" for years. He left us. My family is my mum and my brother.

People who complain about their cousins, and brag about the things their dad's buy them, and wish their family were different annoy me. Families are taken for granted - you should sit back and be grateful for your family. It's only when you don't have a family there for you that you realise how much of an influence they have. I try not to hate my 'family' for how they've treated me. I don't want to be a hateful person, even if they give me every reason to be one.

Some people say that their friends are a different kind of family. I disagree. You don't get to choose your family, but you do get to choose your friends. You love your friends for who they are and how they love you. You love your family because they are exactly that - family.
Putting her quill down, Iris sighed. Family really was a stupid word.

Pros and cons.

More fun.

Iris had a feeling that her list was going to be drastically different to everyone else's. Or... nearly everyone else's lists. Mainly because she didn't consider her friends to be family. Going with logic, you'd think that she would for the comfort and all... but she didn't for that very reason. Her 'family' didn't exist in her mind. Her friends were MORE than her family ever could be to her.

The prefect didn't really want to discuss her list with any one else in the class. If they wanted to with her, then fine... but she really didn't want to.
SPOILER!!: parchment

BIOLOGICAL FAMILY
PROS:
- They are always going to be there for you.
- They will always love you.
- IF they are there for you, then they always will be.
- IF they love you, then they'll never stop loving you.
- There will always be someone in your family who doesn't lose hope in you.
- Family is for ever.
- Your family can change, can get better. (e.g. new, caring love interest after father leaves mother for a pretty, younger woman.)

CONS:
- Your "family" isn't always there for you.
- They can be immature.
- Pride, customs and arguments can ruin family relationships.
- Some family members will judge you as if you were your parents.
- You can never win with older family members.
- Family doesn't last for ever.
- Families can fall apart and break up.
- Divorce.
- There is the power to disown and disinherit family members, both from wills and the actual family.
- You have to love them, because they're your family.
- Big brothers like to bully you. (PRO: This is only because they love you, though. <3)

FAMILY OF FRIENDS AND ROLE MODELS
PROS:
- You choose who your friends are, and who it is you look up to.
- You love your friends for who they are, not because you HAVE to, and vice versa.
-

CONS:
- Friendships can break up much easier than biological families.
-

Iris looked down at the lists she'd put together. Her second list was VERY empty. She didn't know what to write though... So she left if blank. Maybe she'd go and talk with someone about it, but for now she left it like that.

She'd gone back to the Pro's of her family, too, and changed it a lot. There were lots of crossings out and things being changed. Iris did not like this lesson. She didn't want to talk about her family... it's like talking about an imaginary friend.

jengirls109 03-05-2011 09:38 PM

Jaina's eyes widened. Family?!?! she thought. Her parents didn't even know she was in school for witchcraft and wizardry! As far as they were concerned this was a hospital to cure kids like her. They were still demanding an answer as to whether or not she was coming home for good or not. They said she could not use her owl to deliver the message, so here was her paradox. She had been in and out of hospitals before coming to Hogwarts as her parents strived for her to be 'normal.'

She pulled out a piece of her notebook paper and did as the professor told them to do. Pros of a biological family......she couldn't think of any....oh wait...she thought of a couple.

Pros of Biological family:
1. feed you
2. clothe you
3. provide housing

Now on to the cons....

Cons of a Biological family:
1. you MUST conform

ok so she was done with that. On to the friend family. This would be easier. She thought of Charley, Belle, Alice, and, of course, Ben. What did they have as pros and cons?

Pros of Friend/Chosen Family:
1. You get to pick them.
2. They like you because you ARE you
3. They accept you for who you are.
4. They are fun to be with.
5. They are great listeners
6. They're always there for you.
7. They're loyal

She was trying to think of the cons to her friends...she could only think of one.

Cons of Friends/Chosen Family:
1. If you hurt them, they'll go away forever.

She put her quill down and waited patiently. No one would talk to her or ask her anything. They were mostly the older kids.

Zebragirl 03-05-2011 10:11 PM

Family. Honestly! It just had to be family. Guess Emily being happy was just too good to be true.

She took out her quill, ink and parchment and slamming it on the table slightly (but not very hard) she started to write, frowning.

SPOILER!!: parchment

Biological Family
Pros
-Provide shealter, food and water
-If you fall ill and need an organ or blood transplant, they are a match to you.
-Siblings know what you go through, and help you

Cons
-Are harder to get rid off as they will always be a part of you (some may put this as a pro)
-Divorce
-Must obey their rules
-Expected to live/do how/what they want without question
-Arnt always there when you need them
-Get cought it the middle of arguments you can never get away from

Adoptive Family
Pros
-They chose you, so therefore must WANT you
-They're fair and understanding
-They actually want to know you
-They need you like you need them. To them, your not an accident.
-They can act like a normal family

Cons
-Can turn into/like your old family
-Arn't actually your real parents. (They never gave birth to you) so in that sence, you'll never belong to them
-Other family members may be jelous/dislike you for 'intruding' in their family

Family of Friends and Role Models
Pros
-You love them for who they are, not because you have too
-You can choose who your friends are/who you look up too
-You always seem to have more in common, therefore more fun with friends
-You can trust them and know (sometimes) they have something in common with you, so they can relate.
-They like you for you and want to know you

Cons
-If you hurt them, they'll be gone forever and never come back
-You can choose the wrong friends/role models

There. She twisted her quill around her finger and sat with tears forming in her eyes. She blinked them back and sat up straight.
She was fine. Totally.

She read back her list. She had managed 3 pros for biological? Wow, that was 3 more than she had thought she was gonna write.
She'd repeated herself on adoptive family pros but she had just wanted to make herself clear. They wanted her. She gave a small smile and continued to twist the quill in her hand. She was gonna be up all night again.

ooc: I'm off to work now... I'll be back online in about 10 hours to continue the lesson then ... and tomorrow. But feel free to discuss with your classmates and keep your lists organized so I can read them easily and give you proper credit. =)

Nika quickly reached into her bag and grab a quill and some parchment. Taking her quill she drew a crooked line down the middle of each side of the parchment. She wrote 'PROS' and 'CONS' on it in big loopy handwriting. She took time looking at her parchment trying to think of things to write.

SPOILER!!: Nika's Pros and Cons of biological family!

Pros:
  • Will always love me
  • Provide necessities of life (food, water, shelter)
  • Help me reach my goals
  • Protect me

Cons:
  • May not always let me do what I want
  • Very strict about certain rules
  • May not get along very well

She looked over her list hoping that she had written enough. She flipped her parchment to the back side and drew another crooked line.

SPOILER!!: Nika's Pros and Cons of chosen family

Pros:
  • I can choose them so I can pick who I want
  • They love me for who I am
  • Get a long well
  • Stick with you until the end
  • Friends cheer you up and help you get through tough situations
  • They know you the best out of anyone

Cons:
  • May not always tolerate you
  • Can leave you
  • Easily broken

She looked around the room trying to find a friend to discuss with.

Sierra raised her hand into the air...

...and then quickly brought it back down. She was about to share her opinion on what a 'family' was, but then the professor moved on and directed the lesson to completing some activity in their notebooks.

Well, blah. Sierra had been about to suggest that a family could be biological, or it could be the people who care for you, care what happens to you, and are there by your side through thick and thin (whether they're biological or not). She'd just jot all that down on her paper, though.

As she pulled out her notebook and a quill, she briefly wondered what in the name of Merlin this had to do with Arithmancy. What were they going to do--calculate the number of people who might be considered family in some way or another?

She set up the charts on her paper and then began writing.

Biological Families

Pros
* You might inherit their good genes (looks, health, etc.).
* They care for you and care what happens to you.

Cons
* You might inherit their bad genes (looks, heath, etc.)

Other Families

Pros
* These people came into your life because they chose to be there, not because they had to be there.
* They care for you and care what happens to you.

Cons
* Because they don't have to be in your life, they may leave you for good if something bad (argument, divorce, etc.) ever happens.

Sierra put down her quill and studied her paper. There were a lot of things that overlapped, and there was also a lot of things that contradicted other things. Who knew family could be so confusing...

"Another con of chosen family is that they aren't your biological family," she said softly, giving Jaina a tight hug, then continuing her own list. She'd remained quiet and solemn the entire lesson. Family was always a very difficult subject for her.
She picked up her quill and divided a leaf of paper in her notebook into four portions and began to write the pros and cons of both types of families.

Pros of Biological Family
1. Often provide for material needs
2. Often more present in daily life

Cons of Biological Family
1. Want you to adhere to expectations
2. You can't choose them
3. Feel entitled to hurt you because they believe that since you are family you must forgive them
4. Likely not to feel need to accept you

Pros of Chosen Family & Friends
1. Chosen by you
2. Know you well
3. Emotionally present
4. Care about you
5. Accept you the way you are, and because they love you that way, not because they think they have to

Cons of Chosen Family & Friends
1. Not your biological family
2. Might not be accepted by your biological family

That's all I can think of for now, she thought.
It's a very comprehensive list, Charley, Henry interjected. Charley could hear that he sounded as if he were about to cry. She herself was welling up as she was forced to think about all the turbulence and tension they had in their family.
I know, I know. But with everything we've gone through, there are probably more cons.
There was a longer stretch of silence between them before Henry responded.
Maybe there are. If anyone thinks of them, though, it'll be you.
The ends of her mouth curled into a very small smile.
Thank you.
And I know you're in class still; I apologise about that. You've enough to think about now; I'll, uh, let you go. Oh I almost forgot! Would you tell me next time you are going to Hogsmeade? No need to pop in, a letter will do just fine.
She giggled, and could tell he did as well.
I'll be sure to. And, before you go; I love you!
I love you too; very much! Enjoy the rest of your day, Charley.
She blinked and sighed in relief.
Occlumency is so much work!
She grabbed her quill, and added to the portion of her paper entitled Pros of Chosen Family & Friends:

6. Can assume roles of absent members of biological family

While Henry was part of her biological family, they were much closer than she was to other members, and ever since their father left, he'd taken over as the male head of household, to the chagrin of Charley's other older brother, Nathaniel. Henry was the only father figure their seven-year older Andrew had ever had.
Charley physically hurt to think about the weeks following her parents' split. Her chest tightened, her stomach felt uneasy, her heartbeat sped up, and she had a blasting headache, though that surely was influenced by communicating with Henry.
With a sudden burst of unfortunate inspiration from their conversation, she elaborated even more.

Cons of Biological Family:
5. If they leave, they leave roles in the family that need to be filled.

ooc: sorry for the very long post. I haven't been able to attend to every class consistently enough. Plus poor Charlotte has some intense father issues.

sweetpinkpixie 03-05-2011 10:33 PM

Kurumi remained silent during the discussion about family. Kurumi had spent most of her free time up to now in the library doing research on her own just trying to figure out who they were. More specifically, what secrets were being kept.

What was family? Kurumi wasn't sure she knew the answer anymore seeing as everything she thought she had known about her parents had been thrown out the window that one day in the library and her visit to Hogsmeade to talk with Mrs. Elo.

Choosing to remain quite for the first part of the discussion, Kurumi frowned and picked up her quill before starting on the second task.
SPOILER!!: front side of parchment

The Pros and Cons of a Biological Family
PROS
  • they provide a sense of belonging
  • made up of the people I care about and that care about me
  • I always have someone to talk to
  • we share the same blood type, so if there were a medical emergency we could help one another
  • no matter what happens, they will always be your family
  • having siblings makes you feel even less alone
  • you always have someone to talk to
  • they give you unconditional love
  • they are always present within yourself because the same blood flowing through their veins is in you

PROS
  • you can't choose them
  • parents push their ideas onto you and insist that they are right
  • if there is a history of disease, there is a chance that you will get it as well - like cancer
  • Divorce
  • have scary grandparents that pinch your cheeks
  • be expected to take over the family business even if it isn't your dream
  • they lie to you and keep secrets

Setting her quill down for now, Kurumi couldn't bring herself to continue brainstorming and instead stared at the list she had compiled.

Ugh, Jake was so mad. So, so mad.

Mainly because family was touchy with a LOT of people. Even at his primary school, yeeeeeeeeeeears ago, the topic had never been breached, because of the diversity and the issues.

But too late now.

He screwed up his first piece of parchment and vanished it, starting up a new table. But then he found himself staring at it.

Quote:

Families

They all suck.
And that was all he could think of for now... maybe... maybe when he'd chilled out he could write some more. As of that moment, he was glancing around the room and looking out for any upset faces. Just in case... because... he could DEAL with his emotions for now... but some couldn't.

Too bad for Jake... he was really terrible at recognising emotions and facial expressions.

Fail.

He walked over to a emtpy desk and put his bag down, before dropping himself into the chair, "UGHH!" he groaned loudly and his head smacked down onto the desk, he wasn't really sure when the last time he was so tired.... oh yeah, yesterday.

"Captain Bennett? Would you mind seating yourself near your fellow Captain? Keep an eye on him and make sure he's alright. I don't want to have to bother the Healer for something that might be prevented."

Simon looked at his fellow captain as Professor Hadley brought his attention to the Ravenclaw and asked him to look after him. "Umm...sure Professor," he answered, moving closer and taking a seat next to where Jacob was seated. He looked him over wondering if it had anything to do with his worries over his tests that he had brought up in Professor Vindictus' office when they had both been there.

Whatever the case, he'd be there like the professor asked but didn't push for info since the class had begun. His parchment out, Simon started taking notes on what his classmates answered about the meaning of family, turning over to a new sheet as the professor handed them their next task. He divided both sides of the paper, labeling all the sections as he was told.
Hmm biological first I think, he mused to himself turning back to the first side and thinking over the pros and the cons before starting to write.

Quote:

PROS:
Support both monetary and emotional

CONS:
Dealing with an older brother
Being compared with said brother by others

Well, that wasn’t her most favorite thing to do in the world unless it was ‘The List’ in which she wrote down the people she didn’t like, but this pros and cons things about family…there was more than likely going to be more cons on her list then pros. First of all, there was something extremely important that she had to do first. So important…that it had to be whispered.

DUDE.

This was like...REAL LIFE. Like...why were they kept out of it? Ellie wanted to KNOW if things were going to affect her.

Sierra peered down at her parchment and frowned. This activity was about her family, for Merlin's sake! Shouldn't she be able to write much more than this?! Feeling the need for a distraction, she let her mind wander to anything and everything but Arithmancy. Why couldn't this be Potions class?! She was actually pretty good at that. This list stuff--now this was something else altogether.

Somewhere in the back of her mind, she thought she heard someone calling her name. She pulled herself out of her thoughts and turned to the person on her side--Evelyn, who was asking for...something. "Hmm?" she asked. Then a second later, she realized her friend had asked for a quill. "Oh, yeah, sure." She fished in her bag and pulled out a spare quill, passing it over to Evelyn.

Hurry up and get something on your parchment, Evelyn! That way I can copy what you've got!

In all seriousness, though, Sierra just needed to put a lot of focus into thinking about her father. He was the family member she was closest to, after all.

The fact that they were there was enough for her. She knew her parents wouldn't approve of her friends, and that didn't matter to her either.

She watched Charley as she made her list. She kinda looked like she was off in thought. She even heard her giggle. When she saw her writing, she thought she'd ask. "Charley, what are you doing when you go off in thought like that? It's like you're deep in thought but somewhere else. It's ok if you don't want to tell me. I was just curious."

Quote:

Biological Family PRO'S:
  • Provides support
  • Provides guidance
  • Are there for you

Seventh year-itis XD

Families? Hmm. Cedric for one had a lot to say about families. He was a part of a great, though rather small, family! He wasn't really sure where they were headed to in this class by talking about families but he guessed he should just do as their teacher say. It wouldn't hurt to do so anyway.

Quote:

BIOLOGICAL FAMILY

PROS:
- They are always there for us.
- Wealth, looks, plenty of good genes... I inherited those from my parents, my only family.
- Mom and Dad are a lot of fun, especially the latter.
- I don't need to be my 'best' self when I'm with them.
- They support me in all of my endeavors... well, not really all. Mom is always vocal of her 'very little indisposition' toward my love for plants and stuffs like photography.
- Having siblings would have been a lot of fun.
CONS:
- They could be taken away just too soon... like Dad.

OTHER FAMILY

PROS:
- You choose them. I choose my friends well.
- They always lend a helping hand.
- Makes me laugh when I'm in gloom.
- They're like siblings to me.
- I look up to them. They're very good influences.
CONS:
- They can't be always around.
- They leave, too.

Cedric practically gaped at his parchment after putting down his quill. This activity could be quite emotionally draining.

Quote:

Biological Families:
Pros:
  • They love you unconditional
  • They are someone for you in the world that through the right and the wrong will stand by your side
  • When you are down and dejected they are the only one's who will stand by your side
  • They give you a sense of belonging
  • They are your family

Cons:
  • They know you when you are not being yourself and will point it out
  • When you want to be alone they don't let you because they love you
  • They are the first to point out when you are being wrong or mean

"Families":
Pros:
  • They are someone who you can go to about anything
  • When you need someone to be there they are never far away
  • They make you laugh and you feel comfortable around them
  • You choose them, so they are always the people you need
  • When you love someone to the point of calling them family they are special people

Cons:
  • When they hurt you it hurts because you choose to put your trust in them
  • You put yourself at risk putting your heart on the line for a friendship
  • Sometimes they drift apart from you and there is nothing you can do about it
  • People change

Mwahaha!

"Thank you." she smiled, taking the quill and giving a good once over. Seemed ordinary to her, and she hadn't dropped down dead or anything so it wasn't poisoned. Not like Sierra would do that, HA! Just...just being cautious.

Writing the first few words at the top of a new page in her...Ancient Runes notebook, ugh, the Slytherin girl paused for a moment before flipping the page and writing the same thing down before creating the lines and whatnot- OMG! The quill just turned BLUE!

...

Giggle.

It turned bluuueee. That was so awesome. Before she could get distracted anymore what the color changing quill, Evelyn quickly stared jotting random things down in the columns as they appeared in her mind. The trouble was though, she was trying not to get angry as she wrote them down.

SPOILER!!: Evelyn's notebook

Chosen Family

Pros
  • You know that they’ll be there for you no matter what.
  • You aren’t stuck with the people that are in your actual family.
  • You can be more yourself.
  • You aren’t being judged 24/7.
  • You are the one that chooses who stays or goes instead of being stuck with...people...that you don't like.

Cons
  • One should be rather careful with who you choose.

And just through all of those words had the quill turned to yellow, red, green, orange, and purple. OMG! Sierrraaaa...where did ya get the quill hmmm? 'Cause the younger Slytherin girl may have to go buy another one. Evelyn was too attached to this one now.

Rae was sitting silently, and perhaps got a bit more silent when she head what they were listing. She hated talking about family, it just brought bad memories and a sense of loneliness. Her head turned around the room just looking at the people jotting down their pros and cons. Then there was Evelyn, her parents were different in many ways from Rae's. But they both ended up the same way in the same house, there was also similarities in that way. So Rae decided that instead of writing down the things that hurt, (since there weren't many pros in her mind) She will just write down what her friend did.

Rae wasn't sitting too far away from her, maybe a table away. She took a glance at Evelyn's paper, not trying to hide or anything, Ev must know why Rae would use her answers anyways.

DUDE.

This was like...REAL LIFE. Like...why were they kept out of it? Ellie wanted to KNOW if things were going to affect her.

The third year took out her notebook, drew the lines, and labeled them as instructed. But... Pros...Cons... Who thinks of these things? Her family was...her family. And her friends were her friends.

What was good or bad about either of them?

"Perhaps ... but please ... Miss St-- Ellie. Please. Let's focus on the lesson now. You can come by my office and discuss current events later if you'd like." Professor Hadley urged the girl, really just wanting to move off that topic.

Turning her attention to her parchment she drew a line down the middle all the way around to the reverse side. Then labelled each side, first pro's then con's.

"I'm not sure if it's just me.. but Im seeing a trend in the pro's and con's.. I mean family is family and they share common pro's and con's whether or not they are biological or other."

"It might be hard to see now, but even if you're abused by your family, then they still love you. They themselves just likely have insecurities that they take out on you because it helps them feel in control." Ugh, who knew that this would be such a touchy topic with the students these days?

"Yes ... Family is family. And it doesn't really matter whether biological or not, if they've made it into your 'family', then chances are they care about your well-being. But in any family, they can just as easily enter in, as they can break your heart. They affect your mental and emotional well-being. They are, in some sense, your heart, mind, and soul." Family was there to support you, whether you choose them, or they ... chose you.

"In a little while, we're going to go on a mini adventure, but before we do that, I want to show you a quick calculation." She paused as she flipped to the page in the textbook. "Using the Pythagorean number system in chapter two, we're going to do a rather simple calculation of your family name number. Unfortunately for this you're going to have to use your biological family name, although if it's legalized, then I suppose adoptive would work too. Anyone have any idea how to calculate this number?"

Kurumi thought for a moment. "Professor, do we find it by adding our father and mother's family's names together?" That made sense to her at least. Just using her father's last name seemed unfair since it wasn't only his blood running through her veins.

No.

The stubbornness in Ellie wanted to continue with this conversation. She wanted to KNOW.

But Hadley HAD called her 'Ellie'...so she supposed that made up for it. Besides, if it was really important, her mommy and daddy would have told her all about it during the holidays. Unless.. you know, this happened post-holidays...

Eh...she'll write home just in case. No need to bother Hadley in her office, though.

....

Fieldtrip?!!! YESSSSSS!

Ellie was uber excited by this. She even sat straighter in her chair. Then Hadley ruined it with 'calculation'.

SIGH.

She'd almost forgot this was Arithmancy. With math. And other uselessness she didn't understand. "Is it your last name alone? Added and simplified and..." arithmancy-ed, "stuff." She'll still try, though.

Emily listened to the Professor's reasoning, and though she was right, there were exceptions to the rule. Emily didn't respond, instead she turned to chaper two of her text book....

"Is it a matter of using your biological name- fathers side of course and simplifying it... then doing to same to your mothers biological name and then adding the two together and simplifying that?" she asked... hoping she made sense.

Luin had taken down her notes with her pros and cons and then listened to the professor as she spoke of the family name number. She thought on it for a little while, then tentatively raised her hand in order to answer, "Well..the pythagorean system assigns a number to each letter in the given last name and they are all added together. Although sometimes that would make for a fairly large number, depending upon the name, so perhaps it is divided by the total letters or something?"

PatInTheHat 03-06-2011 07:20 AM

This was probably her favorite Arithmancy ever... because it was about family. Arya LOVED her family, and those friends that were close to her heart. Which would explain why she had difficulty coming up with Cons for both lists. Brown eyes on the professor and the other students, she listened for how to calculate this new number.

Samira Malfoy Potter 03-06-2011 09:44 AM

Samira smiled as she heard the assignment. She didn't think that she was going to enjoy arithmancy at first, but family was one of her favorite topics. Quickly scribbling a line down the middle, Samira began writing the pros and cons of a biological family.

Pros:
1. Will always be there for you
2. Will always love you
3. You'll know that they will always be there by your side no matter what
4. With family, you are assured that they are your family forever, unlike friends
5. they can give you help and guidance in life

Cons:
1. You can't pick your family
2. You must follow their rules, even if you don't agree
3. They usually don't allow you to fight back without a punishment
4. they can sometimes neglect you or abuse you and you can't get away
5. They can choose favorites

Pros and cons of unbiological family:
Pros
1. they give the best, honest advice
2. They are your shoulder to cry on
3. You can choose your friends, and they choose you, so you can make sure it is the right choice
4. the adventures!

cons:
1. fights or boys can easily break friends up
2. they may not like your other choices of friends, therefore not want to hang out with you
3. they can turn on you with the snap of a finger.

satisfied with her work, Samira leaned back in her chair and waited for her next instructions. She glanced around to see if there was anyone she could strike up a conversation with.

Patroclus loved his family, it was as simple as that. And recently it had become more and more important for them to be close, his mother and Father had both been only children, and both set of Grandparents had moved on, so essentially they were all that was left of their lines.

Turning to the set task, Patroclus had a bit of an issue, his family was his role models, his Mother Father and Brother meant everything to him, and he tired everyday to make them proud and aspired to be like them. However for thr point of the lesson he would just place them in the Biological section!

SPOILER!!: Patroclus' Parchment

Biological Family
Pros
  • Love you un-conditionally
  • Take you to places you never thought possible
  • Pass onto you traits that form you into a happy healthy young person
  • Support you through every decision
  • Realise that they need you, just as much as you need them
  • Allow you to borrow their things and are blunt enough to ask for them back
  • Pass on their genes, their looks, their loves, their dislikes
  • Share with you their world, their friends
Cons
  • Can be smothering at times
Second Family
Pros
  • Always there for a laugh
  • Keep you grounded
  • The adventures
  • The NickNames
  • The jokes, personal and ongoing
  • The fact that they back you up, in class, in trouble and in life
  • No matter how different your backgrounds your likes and dislikes it just works
Cons
  • Not everyone will always get along.....especially if they were 'together'
  • They can change, and things just no longer feel right
  • Distance can hurt a friendship
  • Time can make memories foggy

With his lis complete, Patroclus listening to the next section the use of Numbers to figure out a family name number, "Either what Kurumi said, the mixing of the Maiden Name, and family name, or perhaps the first names of everyone in the family!"

'P' seemed to be a common letter in the Hudson household!

LOL, I love that Jake's 'they all suck' is on there

Family was there to support you, whether you choose them, or they ...

Oh man... that was confusing. So... Jake could find the Blackly-Upstead name, or he could do the Lawson name... which could confuse people since everyone now knew him as Morgan (or 'that Upstead Lawson Morgan kid').

Shrugging his shoulders though he knew PERFECTLY well how to find that number, Jake quickly scribbled a real list.

Quote:

Families

They all suck.

Biological Family

Pros:

They HAVE to look after you even if they don't like you. They HAVE to be there.

Parents brought you into the world.

They can always be on your 'side' if something happens outside of the home (as a matter of family unity)

A lot of the time they do love you unconditionally.

They sometimes see you as belonging to the family, and straying away is like betrayal.

Cons:

Even though they have to be there and look after you, sometimes they don't.

You'll rarely get an honest answer about if they actually like you.

If they split up, you can be shipped around forever.

If you're taken from them, you have to try and find a new family.

Friends and Role Models

I definitely have these, it's not that I'm not writing because I don't know.

Adoptive family

Pros:

You choose them and they choose you.

Becuse of the care system, if you're treated wrongly, you never have to stay, but that never happened with me.

They love you.

Cons:

You have to legally change your surname which is pure hassle. You wouldn't believe how many times my surname has been legally changed.

You're often stuck with the name your original parents gave you. It's a good job I like my name.

They'll never treasure you like they do when they have their own child.

You'll always be thought of as 'my adoptive son'.

They have no baby pictures of you.

It takes a while to get used to what family is... because things are different.

They break up, just like other families. But in a way, this is worse. You feel for once like you're loved and in a place where you belong. You don't have a broken family and everything will be fine for the rest of your life. But then you go away for a year to be educated by someone, and you come back to find that your parents have split, your mother isn't living in that house anymore and your father won't even speak to you, at least at first. It hurts, but you have to deal with it, like you deal with everything else. Then you find out all the stuff you'd rather not know and end up blanking one of the parents, even though you love them. Their marriage was a mistake, so their adopting a son was definitely a mistake.
He put down his quill, having missed out one section completely, because he wasn't sure what to put. He was busy getting a little too personal on his last one without realising. And getting teary-eyed. But that would go away soon.

"Not quite," Professor Hadley said, shaking her head sadly at the two girls.

Although sometimes that would make for a fairly large number, depending upon the name, so perhaps it is divided by the total letters or something?"

The next two though represented their house well, as they gave precisely the correct answer. "Yes. One point to each of you. The family name number is calculated by assigning each letter in the surname with the appropriate number, then adding those numbers together and reducing the sum to a single-digit, unless we get a Master Number, in which case we do not reduce. Can I have some volunteers please?" Professor Hadley asked, looking around the classroom. Ugh. They were all so exhausted. Pity.

Someone loved their family. Josephina had the distinct feeling that Prefect Hudson over there had a loving and supportive upbringing. A household that could almost be considered normal, if there was such a thing.

ooc: Just so you guys know, you're more than welcome to post Pro/Con lists if you haven't done so already... As well as write on your parchments about the family question, as Nixy! did... That is, if you want the participation credit =)

Jake raised his hand. Sure he'd volunteer.

It might serve as a distraction.

Emily jotted down the correct answer on her parchment, then looked back up at the Professor...
Had she just asked for a vollunteer?... vollunteer to do what exactly? she thought.

Feeling a bit uncertain Emily raised her hand, "I'd like to vollunteer", she said.

Omg, she was way too distracted. She was going to ask Sierra for another quill but, well the Professor started speaking and the quill just changed to red. Teehee. It was all Gryffindor like now. Oh crud, it was all Gryffindor like...now. Meh. Darn thing. Turn colors again!

MEEP!?

"Yea." she nodded slowly, looking up and towards Professor Hadley. Wait, did she ask her a question? Or did she just...wait, what? Awwww volunteeeeers. Eh. "Yeaaa, I'll...volunteer." Sierra! She needed a different quill. Or maybe Rae had one. When did she get here?

RachieRu 03-06-2011 03:14 PM

*will add pros/cons list in next post...or at some point*

Oooh. The Professor wanted some volunteers. Now Finn had a bit of a dilema. He could either sit back, and like not volunteer himself, or he could be a good prefect and volunteer himself. Now...he did want to try and be a good role model for Ravenclaw, show that he was a good prefect and all that jazz. So he decided that it probably would be a good idea for him to volunteer. As long as he wasn't going to regret it or something, because that would be really bad.

"I'll volunteer Professor." Good Work Carmicheal.

Nordic Witch 03-06-2011 03:24 PM

All through the lesson the Gryffindor prefect Connolly had kept her head low and focused on completeing the different tasks set by Professor Hadley. Writing up the pros/cons with her own family had made Sophie think about them more than she had done so far in the term. The brunette even got slightly homesick. When Professor Hadley asked for volunteers Sophie raised her voice from the back of the room. "I'll volunteer professor!" This was probably a stupid move which Sophie would regret later but she genuinly liked Professor Hadley and wanted to give her a hand in the lesson.

Nixy! 03-06-2011 03:33 PM

Iris looked at Professor Hadley as she spoke.

Volunteers?!

The prefect raised her hand without thinking. "I'll volunteer, Professor."

Ah ... perfect. Five volunteers ... One from each house and one extra from Ravenclaw? What to do about Prefect Carmicheal now? She'd think of something for him to calculate. Maybe the lines on his hand? Shaking her head, she shook that thought off.

"Perfect. You four. Come up to the chalkboard and calculate the family name number for your respective head of house." Because they should all know who that was and if they didn't? Then they had a problem.

Now what to do about the slow Ravenclaw? "You sir. Can come on up as well..." And clean up the chalk dust. Explain why it's necessary to be quick? "And you're going to interpret the meanings for each of the family name numbers of each of the heads of houses." You better not let me down, Carmicheal. Or I'll be speaking to Max personally.

Felixir 03-06-2011 03:44 PM

Jake smiled slightly and headed up to the front, picking up the chalking and writing a childish 'M' up there... and then stopping.

...

And biting his lip.

Uhhh...

Looking over at Hadley with slight worry, Jake quietened his voice and spoke to the woman. "How d'you spell her name?" Morrettee? More-et-ee? Muhretty?

Jake wasn't GOOD with reading and writing and spelling. WHY HAD HE VOLUNTEERED?!

Picking up a piece of chalk Emily wrote up the Professor's biological name, then she began to calculate his Family name number.

Oh, that was it? Hehe, well, she could do tha-

Wha?

Pausing as she was just getting up, the Slytherin girl stared at the professor, wondering if she just went crazy or Evelyn had heard her wrong. Calculate the family name number for...their head of house? Did the professor even KNOW that Lafay was the Slytherin head of house?! What if...what if Lafay got wind of this? What if it was a horrible number that insulted her family? What if she found out that Evelyn had calculated it!?

What if she wrote out the calculations so fast that no one saw her do it, so there was no witnesses and she'll be totally burn free!? Yea, that sounded like a good plan.

Hurrying up to the board, she quickly wrote out the Professor's name and then the numbers underneath before adding them together and reducing. Fast fast fast. No one look at her! She wasn't here!

Blink. Er ... what?

"Moret-ti" Hadley said slowly, trying to enunciate on the two syllables for Jake. "M. O. R. E. T. T. I." She wrote each letter carefully and neatly after Jake's M. Now go on and calculate it; I know you can do this.

"Perfect." Hadley said to the other three. But why was Evelyn moving like that? Like she didn't want to be seen? Odd behavior. Now to wait for Master Carmicheal to interpret them... like interesting how the Gryffindor and Ravenclaw Heads had the same Family Name Number.

Felixir 03-06-2011 04:08 PM

Okay.

So.

Now Jake felt bad about being annoyed at Hadley... she was actually being really nice. Writing that out and all... He looked at the name on the board and nodded at it, before continuing to write the numbers and symbols in still a rather childish manner.

Quote:

M O R E T T I

4 6 9 5 2 2 9

4 + 6 + 9 + 5 + 2 + 2 + 9 = 37

3 + 7 = 10

1 + 0 = 1

1

Dangit, he never got a master number!

"One..." Jake mumbled, thinking that was right. He could... vaguely remember what that meant from the textbook (he had just been looking before coming up here after all) and smiled slightly.

And if ANYONE made fun of his little spelling issue... he'd... well... he'd be quite upset. XD

RachieRu 03-06-2011 04:09 PM

At first Finlay thought that like the professor hadn't heard him, cause she kind of like picked four other people, but then she went back to him. Waiiit. He had to interpret. Well...at least he hadn't got to calculate anything, because that wouldn't be too cool. He just had to interpret instead. He got up, and wandered to the front, taking text book with him, now he just needed to wait for the other four to calculate the numbers.

But ahh. Emily was done, and her number was 4. He looked in his textbook, before speaking, kind of to the class, and kind of to the professor. "The family number 4 says that a person inherits a belief that hard work is the right way to work, and about self-disipline. I think that this could like relate to Professor Vindictus' flying, and quidditch because you have to work hard to be succesful in that sport, and be quite disiplined. The number seems to suit him quite well."

Next? Ahh. Evelyn was done, and her number was 9. Using his finger he skimmed down to the end, and read what it was about. What...that was about Lafay? He looked like a little confused, and definetly double checked between what he was reading and the number. Oh... "The Family Number 9 talks about inheriting artistic flair, a concern for others, and an attitude for looking for what is possible. That kinda relates to Lafay cause..." Then he needed to think how that related to the slytherin head of house, because well he didn't know if Lafay actually cared for others. "Well, she must have some artistic flair due to her being a potions mistress, I would assume to be able to brew her potions, she has some artistic fair, so the potions are succesful?" Ermm....That was okay right?

"Oh...and Sophie already interpreted Madam Dovoans number, so I won't repeat...." Thanks Sophie.

Now just to wait for Jake to finish....but he would say something else though. "The gryffindor head of house, and Ravenclaw head of house has the same numer, which could relate to them both being head of houses, because they both may believe that we, as students, should work hard to be succesful maybe?"

Oh. there now he was done. And number one? Well that was pretty easy seeing as it was at the top of the page. Finn quickly read what it said, before interpreting it. "Finally the family number 1 says that people inherit an independent spirit, forceful nature, and the ability to come up with origional ideas." Now how did this relate to Healer Moretti? "Well I think this relates to Healer Moretti as it kinda shows how she can come up the ideas of how to heal us all. I mean we might come with the same injuries, but all need a different type of treatment? Also she's all up in that hospital wing on her own sometimes, so maybe it would be a good thing that she had an independent spirit...

PhoenixRising 03-06-2011 04:18 PM

"Ah yes, thank you all for that fine demonstration. And to the lovely Prefect Carmicheal for his fine interpretations. Fascinating, yes, how two of our heads of houses have the same family name number." Er. Did she say that already? Whoops.

"Anyway, resume your seats and go ahead and calculate your own family name numbers and their interpretations on your parchments." And then we'll move onto the mini adventure... the last part of the lesson.

ooc: I'm off for a couple hours. So go ahead and calculate and I'll be back in a few to respond / continue =)

Felixir 03-06-2011 04:29 PM

Jake went back to sit down at his desk at the back, and picked up his quill that had been sitting in the ink, loading up, ready to write.

He had a whole bunch of names to choose, and that didn't seem right to him. He didn't 'believe' in Arithmancy all that much. In fact... he took it for the grade.

BUT SHHHHHHHHHHHHH!

Deciding on the best name, Jake got started.

Quote:

3 1 5 1 6 5

3 + 1 + 5 + 1 + 6 + 5 = 21

2 + 1 = 3

The book says: THREE (3): You inherit a fun-loving, optmistic nature, a sense of humor, and a creative spirit.

My dad is very musical and creative, and I am definitely creative. Since I became a Lawson, I have also become more 'fun-loving' and found a better sense of humour. Being optimistic... that could be debated.

As a side note, I do think that that fact that I was adopted into the Lawson family is significant in how this number relates to me.

He shrugged. In HIS opinion, all of the interpretations of all numbers could relate to anyone if you looked hard enough.

Hera 03-06-2011 04:37 PM

Emily returned to her seat, pleased with how the activity went.
"Great interpretations Finn", she said smiling at her fellow Claw.

Once she was seated she wrote her name on a fresh piece of parchment and began to calculate her family name number.

Quote:

Browne Family Number: 5

5 Meaning/Interpretation: Seems to suggest that Families with this name number are characterised by free spirit. That there should be no restrictions or limitations, and that routine is not favourable. This number also suggests that these Families like to travel and are risktakers with a revenous curiosity.

Father: Auror, constantly travelling, very curious nature, lacks routine, engages in risk-taking activities on a regular basis- Fits interpretation perfectly.
Mother: Teacher, travels seasonally, incredibly curious, craves routine and organisation- Not quite.
Myself: Student, aspiring to be an Auror, very curious and loves to learn, routines are very rarely adhered to, loves to travel, has been know to take risks- Fits interpretation reasonably well.

Nordic Witch 03-06-2011 04:53 PM

Sophie turned pink as she did more than she was supposed to. Guilty she looked over at Finn and mumbled ashamed of herself "Sorry!" before returning to her seat. The next task was to calculate her own family number.

Quote:

CONNOLLY

3+6+5+5+6+3+3+7=38

3+8=11

1+1=2

Connolly family number = 2

The textbook says: TWO (2): You inherit a peaceful nature, the desire to reduce conflict, a sensitivity to things, a gift for detail, a love of gathering things, and a loving nature.

My mother ownes a magical creature hospital and has always strived for our home to be peaceful and my father has always tried to end conflicts of opnion or fights in a peaceful way. I like to have peace around too so i guess the desire to reduce conflicts fits me too a tee more so now that i've become a house prefect. The gift for detail can be debated and the same goes for gathering things since i'm not an avid collector of anything except maybe chocolate frog cards. And the last one you'll have to ask my friends and family about. I try to be loving whereas if i'm of a loving nature that i'm not sure about.
Sophie sighed. Another number would probably have fit her just as well as this one did. Was there a number which could be unique for just her or was that impossible? Prof Hadley might say something about that later in the lesson.

RachieRu 03-06-2011 04:55 PM

Oh. The lovely Prefect Carmicheal? Finlay liked that a lot. "It was my pleasure Professor Hadley." Finlay smiled, before heading back to his seat and sitting down. Now there was only one more bad thing. He had to calculate something by himself now, which really wasn't his trong point. Sure he could interpret the stuff, he just needed to get the right number first. Which he was going to try to find out now.

I think the bit about the indepedent is kind of true, because my father is very indepedent, and so are my brothers, which kind of shows I have inherited my indepedence. The forceful bit could relate again to my indepedence because I might be a bit forceful about not wanting to be tied down too much.

That....kinda looked right. He hoped.

Nixy! 03-06-2011 05:06 PM

Iris sat and watched the students who did the demonstrations on the black board. As they were told to calculate their own numbers, Iris wasn't sure if Hadley was talking to the people who'd just done the Teachers names, or the whole class.

She picked up her quill anyway, and wrote down her surname. The surname that she really didn't like.
SPOILER!!: Iris' Parchment

BEAUMONT
2 + 5 + 1 + 3 + 4 + 6 + 5 + 2 = 28
2 + 8 = 10 = 1

My Family Name Number is: ONE.
Textbook Meaning: You inherit an independent spirit, a forceful nature, a strong will, and the ability to come up with original ideas.

My family could be considered to be these things for a number of different reasons and evens.

My parents chose to be independent when they broke away from their families in France and moved to England.

The rest of my "family" (i.e. My dad's parents, siblings...) have definitely shown their forceful nature when they DISOWNED me because I was born British.

Me, my mum and my brother are all very strong willed. It was tough when my dad left, but we all pulled through it. We all got on with our lives instead of breaking down and losing it without him.

I suppose the most "original" idea my family ever made was the move to England. Before my parents moved, none of the other Beaumonts had even visited the country, never mind lived there.

Iris looked at the textbook, with a frown. She didn't like this task. It was making her think about all the family issues that Iris didn't like to address. The ones she just wanted to forget.

Her interpretation wasn't very creative or insightful. To be perfectly honest though, Iris didn't want to try and interpret these things about her family. Doing so wouldn't bring her dad back, and wouldn't make her family accept her, so what was the point, really?

Roselyn 03-06-2011 05:37 PM

Slumping down in her seat, she waited for Finn to interpret the number, and she...Evelyn wasn't so sure about it. Artistic flair? Concern for others? Taking out her Arithmancy book, she flipped to the chapter about the family number and read about Lafay's, seeing if she had heard the Ravenclaw prefect correctly or not.

An emotional nature?

Okay, there has got to be some way she miscalculated that number, yet the Professor hadn't corrected her. Hmm, well Lafay was rather emotional now that she thought of it. Her anger and irritation levels were...way up there.

Shaking her head slightly, she pulled her notebook closer to herself, flipping to a new page to calculate her own family name number. Bleh. Like she'd want to know about the Flores name. Couldn't she use Destiny's last name instead? Actually, the Slytherin would more then likely do that sooner or later to see why Destiny was...the way she was.

Interpretation: Well, I do like to be creative at times, not to mention my family is always coming up creative solutions to problems, and I suppose they do have a sense of humor, which, kinda rubs off on you if you have to live with them so I maybe inherited it too? Maybe. My parents were pretty fun and loving when I was younger too. I...could be fun. And loving. I guess. Too.

This failed. Her family was like...the complete opposite of this! In her eyes at least. Or...it was so opposite that it looked as if the description would fit them. Now, THAT she could believe.

...

That didn't stop her from sighing dramatically and letting the amazingly addicting to watch color changing quill to drop to her desk in annoyance. Even those flashing rainbow colors couldn't get her to smile.

Simon sat back as the other students volunteered, his own hand acting a little too slow even with his quidditch reflexs. He watched them work, paying attenttion to Madam Donovan's results interested to see if what developed matched the various staff members. When the four were dismissed and the class moved on, the sixth year turned to his own parchment to count out his family name.

EIGHT (8): You inherit an attitude about money and power that will cause you to seek recognition in business and finance. Your family name brings you the qualities of leadership, organization, a high value placed on success, competency, and doing a job well, as well a possibly inflated ego.

Well my family does tend to be hardworking and organized, my father and mother both strong leaders of the family. Though money and power aren't that important to us, those we care for are which explained the predominate Hufflepuff loyalty that surfaces.
Mother: Librarian- A job that requires strong organizational skills
Father: International Magic Lawyer, the result of a successful career
Brother: Auror, dilegent and hard working in his work
Me: No I do not have an inflated ego...not even as quidditch captain, though I guess my leadership qualities have been surfacing to be trusted with such a position

One second into the activity, and Sierra was already frowning. Her last name had so many letters in it! G-r-e-i-n-g-o-t-h! Bahhh! She scooped her quill off her desk, straightened up her parchment, and then stared at her paper for a few seconds before starting. So...how were they meant to be doing this again? Oh, yeah--chapter two!

G + R + E + I + N + G + O + T + H
7 + 9 + 5 + 9 + 5 + 7 + 6 + 2 + 8 = 58
5 + 8 = 13
1 + 3 = 4

Hmm...the Greingoth family was a four, apparently. Now just what did that mean? Sierra glanced back at her textbook and silently read:

Quote:

Sierra made a slight face before taking notes on her parchment.

...but hard work isn't really the only way to work. For example, if someone does something for you, then you really didn't have to do any of the work yourself--they did all your work for you. Now I do think Greingoth's--well, some of us--have been known to be cautious. For example, seeing other people smiling makes me think they're up to something. This is one of the main reasons I'm so leery of Hufflepuffs some people. Thoroughness sounds pretty accurate for my family. After all, when we set a goal to accomplish something, we always see it through to the very end. I'd say we're very ambitious people. Self-discipline? Psh. I'll just pretend like that one's not even there.

Conclusion: I don't know if I like the number four.

Emily smiled to the people who had done that on the board. Well done to them!
She dipped her quill in her ink, and wrote her surname. Her birth and legal one anyway.

SIX (6): You inherit a conservative attitude that sees helping others as the responsible thing to do. You are an excellent problem solver and are family-oriented. You may have inherited a stubborn streak as well as strong opinions

I think I have inherited my dads problem solving skills as he was always good at thinking on his feet and doing puzzles. My mother was always very stubborn when she didn't get her own way and I deffinatly have some strong opinions that I'll voice. I disagree with 'family-oriented' as we never had a family meal/outing in all the time I was with them, so they never put me or my sister first.
Emily bit her lip. Hopefully that would do. She re-read what she had wrote, then raised her hand. She was slightly embarrassed by what she was about to ask.
"Um, professor? What does a 'conservative attitude' mean?"
Whatever it is, she was sure her family probably had it. Probably meant mad.

Woah. She was right?

Woah.

Arithmancy got a lot easier this year, apparently. Or Ellie tried harder...

Nah, totally the first.

Sighing, Ellie wrote her name on the paper, and went into her bag for her textbook....which she didn't have. Darn. Honestly, she never carried it around because she never needed it, and now when she did, she forgot it. Great.

Or so she'd like to think. She thought she was independent. And she did have a strong will to get Bishop out of the school.

Heh. That was so cool.

What was with all the Hogwarts kids and not liking the families they belonged to? Was it just her or were there literally no others that had just a great a school life then their home life? Trixie adored her family, no doubt about it. True they would have their petty arguments but she certainly wouldn't go as far as saying that she wanted her family to just leave her or whatever.

So with that, the con side of the list was going to be slightly difficult. The Head Girl picked up her quill and started scribbling down notes here and there.

Biological Family
Pro's
•They can't ever leave you legally, so in theory they will always be there for you.
•They can understand everything about your past or your homelife and help you if you have a problem.
•Your always going to have a home and a family to return to when times are tough.
•Your parents are more likely to hve a deep bond with you, provided your close.
•They will always love you, even if it doesn't feel like it, and even if it's really REALLY deep down.
Con's
•You can't go to them if you have a problem with your family.
•Your going to get effected more if you argue with them compared to non biological family.
But on the other hand, Trixie was incredibly close to her non biological family, her best friend, close friends and her boyfriend made Hogwarts what it was and without them the Blondes life simply wouldn't be the same. She would find it hard surviving with just one of them, she certainly needed them both.

Non Biological Family
Pro's
•You can choose who they are, if you don't like them then you won't pick them to be close to you. Your more likely to pick someone who are similar to you and care about who you are and not just because they have to.
•You can go to them whenever you need support as they are only an owl away. You can tell them any issue you want, including family problems
•You have the ability to love them as much as you love your real family because of how alike they are, they can change your life for the better, especially your best friend! *Cough* Oliver
Con's
•They can simply leave you because there is no biological contract keeping them to you. They can just up and leave if you have an argument or a falling out.
•They might not know you as well, which makes it hard when you have a problem and they simply can't help you.
By the time she had finished they had already moved onto the next subject. The Slytherin placed her quill down, blinking down at her list, had it really taken her that long to write it all? She watched as people volunteered their services and then it was time to move onto the next part. Calculating her family number for her own surname? Err.. Okay.

M A L F O Y
413667

4+1+3+6+6+7= 27
2+7=9

The number nine apparently means that the family I belong to have a concern for one another, something I find to be very true for my family as we look out for one another all the time, we always have and i certainly look out for my cousins at school. A number nine family also give generously to one another Does parents spoiling their children come under this? Because then that might be true. They can also be artistic. My parents used to do a lot of creative things with me I guess and now I'm like it, and feel the need to serve, probably making them a very close knit family which we are. And lastly, a number nine child is supposed to inherit emotional traits, and in my family, that is very true!

There. That would do right

The1HBIC 03-06-2011 06:15 PM

Marie sat there watching and listening as the others figured out the numbers for all the head of houses. That was simple enough. Marie was good at figuring the numbers, it was the interpretations she sucked at. Something that Finn seemed to be good at though. Hmm, maybe he could help her with her interpretation when she got her number figured. Good thing she was sitting next to him... or she would be when he returned to his seat.

Taking the parchment that had her list on it (will be added later) she wrote her name near the bottom and started to calculate it out.

SPOILER!!: Marie's Parchment

Book: SIX (6): You inherit a conservative attitude that sees helping others as the responsible thing to do. You are an excellent problem solver and are family-oriented. You may have inherited a stubborn streak as well as strong opinions.

Interpretation:

After reading over the textbook meaning Marie frowned a bit. That didn't really sound like her... well all except for that last part. She WAS very stubborn and DID have strong opinions about things. As for family oriented, she loves her family and spending time with them. Just not as much time now that she was getting older. She would much rather spend time with her boyfriend friends than stay home with her family. Her helping others though? Did this book not know who she was? She thought about any time she may have helped someone else with something. Well, there were the times she broke some noses when those boys made Mia cry. They didn't bother Mia anymore after that. So not only did she help someone but she also solved a problem. That probably wasn't what the professor was looking for though. Not to mention it wasn't a very conservative attitude to have.

She looked over at Finn who already had his work done. Good. Now he would have time to help her. "Um, I don't think this number really suits me. What do you think?" She asked showing him the six on her parchment.

Yep, she was gonna take total advantage of his Ravenclaw smarts here.

It was Marie. He turned to face her, smiling at her. "Lets have a look...." Finn took her parchment from her, and began reading over the summer. Ahh. Number 6. Giving her the parchment back he grabbed his textbook, and began to quickly read it.

"Well..." Okay. It didbn't really suit her that much, but it was her number, so he was sure that it must suit her a little bit at least. "The last bit definetly suits you Marie." Picking up his quill he circled the end bit before speaking again. "I mean, you are very opinionated...." He grinned at her. Yes she was very opinionated, but it wasn't a bad thing. But then he did think of something else, and circled family-orientated too. "You know...you she-snakes really do seem like a close knit family, so that one suits you too."

Family...

Obviously, as the Gryffindor figured observing around, talking about families was a problematic thing for some people in the class. Well...Josh had slight problems with his family, too but who didn't? Nothing was perfect in this world. And yes, there was no such thing like 'perfect'. One should ask what he was thinking about when that person decided to create a word with such a meaning, whoever he or she was. Anyway, at least he was happy with his family no matter what so he had no hesitations like others as he wrote down his last name on the piece of parchment, ready to calculate it.

Hmmm...so he got two. Interesting and nice. Josh liked two. Yep, he liked it but.....WAIT! Checking the text book again, he did not need much time to see that he was wrong. That was only a '2', it was '11'. Now, that was different. He got a master number. MASTER number! Hehehehehe

The result : 11/2 a MASTER number!!!!

ELEVEN (11/2): You inherit the ability to uplift, encourage, and inspire others. Your family name brings with it a sensitivity to others and the desire for spiritual living. You will learn from life through many tests that illuminate certain universal truths.

Interpretation: I don't know what those others who know me think but i think this is pretty accurate. No one in my family is whining-like-baby-moody kind of people and they do like to help others. Just like i do. Yeah, we are good people! Sometimes my mother can be a pain in the back by repeatedly telling me study but other than that she is okay. She still has the same characteristics after all. I don't know about my little sister yet because she's too little but i'm sure she'll turn out to be like us. And that's true, people are inspired by us because we are just the perfect example of the fact that a pureblood witch and a muggle dude can be happy together. That is the universal truth my parents has illuminated that way.

Once he was done Josh put his quill back on the desk with a content expression on his face. Now, he could feel that he missed home. He even missed his mother yelling at him or sending him away to Ryan just to ged rid of the fuss he created. Hahha. Nice memories. Now to see what others were doing.

That didn't stop her from sighing dramatically and letting the amazingly addicting to watch color changing quill to drop to her desk in annoyance. Even those flashing rainbow colors couldn't get her to smile.

And by others, of course, he meant Evelyn. Wondering what the Snake Girl possibly got, his dark brown eyes searched her in the class...there she was! As pretty as usual, she seemed to be busy with her calculating. With a little warm smile on his face, Josh kept watching her as she worked on her number wondering which last name she was using for this. Her original one or Destiny's? Probably the original one as it was much more reasonable to calculate that one at her case.

Then when she seemed to be done after a minute or so, Josh was still watching her beautiful face without moving his gaze even for a single second, the boy's smile vanished too when he saw her displeased expression and disappointed sigh. Ah! She, the lion boy assumed, got a result that she did not like. There was no way Josh could let a little number make this Slytherin girl unhappy. No way!

So he grabbed his white quill, drew a circle around the '11' and took the parchment waving it towards her cheerfully ''ROSE! Hey Rose!'' the professor would not be annoyed if he raised his voice a little to ger her attention, would she? Hehe. ''Look here, hun! If you don't like your family number, it seemed to me that you don't, you can MARRY me and have THIS as the family number'' he waved the parchment some more ''I got a master number. A MASTER number, Rose. This is also the proof that i am The Master of Everything. We can be both happy with this number!''

Bahahahaha! Yeah, everybody knew he was right. It was just difficult for them to accept it.

Walrus 03-06-2011 07:16 PM

Jacob set his quill down... this is why he didn't enjoy this class. It was all numbers, and guess work. Nothing factual... It was like Divination which he quit after his first class just numbers instead of chrystal balls.

You had to live life... you couldn't just sit there and try to explain it. Hm.

All this talk of family was actually starting to have them missing them a bit more. She would have to write them once this class was over. Placing her quill down on the table, she eased back in her seat and waited for the next set of instructions.

Can I have some volunteers please?" Professor Hadley asked, looking around the classroom. Ugh. They were all so exhausted. Pity.
Nika wrote some notes on her parchment and in the corner she began to calculate her family number.

SPOILER!!: Nika's Calculations :)

Adler= 1+4+3+5+9

Number= (22= 2+2) 4

Nika looked through her text book and found the page on family name numbers. She frowned slightly when she read the short description it had for the number 4. All of the other numbers had way more written to describe them.

Nika took some more notes on her parchment including how her family liked to be careful and get things done with hard work. It wasn't really true though, she thought to herself. Her dad is so lazy it's not even funny.

Staring at the meaning of the third number as well as her rather failed attempt of an interpretation for her family, the Slytherin girl squeezed her eyes shut as she cringed...hearing her name being called out in the class. Not just any name though. Her middle name. Only one person called her by her middle name. Well...he had been particularly quiet for the first part of the lesson.

However, the Slytherin opened her eyes after only a second or so and searched out the Gryffindor who was-

Blink.

...

Stare.

Did she hear that correctly!? The girl was starting to think she was having hearing problems in this class, because this...she didn't know what to do about this! Except...blush. A lot. And stare. 'Cause there was nothing really going on in her mind right now except the 'M' word echoing in her ears.

Huuuh?

Jaina watched as they calculated the famliy name numbers. Well, here came the number part. She sighed heavily.

Well, that explained why she was a Hufflepuff!
