First lesson since his most recent return to Hogwarts and Ethan Truebridge was sitting at his desk in the front of the classroom, a magical gramophone sat on his desk, the soundtrack of Les Misérables playing quietly.
The blackboard was apparently 'singing' along, as the words were sung on the record, in runic the translations appeared on the board and then disappeared again moments later.
Truebridge ignored it and kept his hazel-green eyes on the door, watching as the students began to file in.
"Sit wherever you like. Four to six people at each table if you please."
SPOILER!!: classroom description
The classroom is bright and airy, very clean and comfortable. There are no desks in this classroom, rather there are several wooden tables which would fit between four and six students quite comfortably. The tables are arranged rather higgledy piggledy, all out of alignment with each other and yet there is plenty of room to weave through the tables and walk up to the front of the classroom, or down to the back.
The front of the classroom has a large blackboard, charmed to write on itself, and when it isn't taking notes it quite often it has something to say, though you'll need to transcribe it from runic to English to make any sense of it. Truebridge also has a desk at the front of the class, set to one side, and a perfect view of all the tables arranged haphazardly around the room.
At the back of the classroom, set to one side, there is the door out into the corridor. Along the back wall there is a large bookshelf almost overflowing with books, mostly old, all very well taken care of. You're welcome to look at any of these books but if any harm befalls the tomes, there will be a severe price to pay. A long and comfortable couch takes up the rest of the back wall.
The windows along the remaining side, opposite the door and Truebridge's desk have soft white curtains that are almost transparent. When pulled they simply diffuse the light and ensure it is not too bright, allowing the room to stay bright and lit at all times. The window frames are the most interesting, if you go and inspect them, all of the exposed wood has been painstakingly carved with runes, mostly bindrunes and rune charms, set in ligature and carved then stained red. These have all been activated and almost thrum under your fingertips. No cold will pass these windows, no student will fall to their deaths. It is a barrier of safety and of comfort, and a good example of runic magic. The door into the classroom is similarly marked.
ooc note: Please note that class has finished. The thread will be open for a short time longer to allow everyone to complete the last task. Please read the following posts to catch up with the lesson, or the latest one if you wish to jump in on the current activity/question. Not all of Truebridge's posts are included here, just those relevant to the progression of the lesson.
And Ellie had said that every year, and obliged pretty much every year. You would think that she'd just realize that Runes was WAY over her head and not come at all.
But this was a different term. Different teacher....Wait.
That guy was here first term!
"Good day, Professor Truebridge." Why Runes? He was SO DADA material.
Ellie continued on her way and sat at some random table, not really paying attention to which table, or who she sat with.
Chloe entered the ancient Runes classroom right after a Ravenclaw girl she did not know. She was awestruck by the elaborite runes and emptiness of the classroom. She looked toward the professor and said, "good day", and went to take a seat. She quickly realized no one she knew had arrived yet. She saw the slightly younger Ravenclaw girl seemed tto be sitting alone. She walked up to the girl ana said, "Hi, my name is Chloe. Mind if I sit with you?".
looking to the left to hide his left eye to Britt and Em he returns the wave then tries to busy him self digging in his bag
turning slightly ridgid at the ramdom hugging he gets to see who it is " oh Hey Joey,,, naw it is cool " side steping the girlfriend question for the moment " how was your summer did you do any gigs??"
Yeah i got a lot of gigs a tour actually.what happend with your girlfriend huh.i have tell you something later at the pathways.just dont freak, she said with a smile.
" Well, , let me quote a muggle song by MeatLoaf, " Two Out of Three Ain't Bad" Rex laughed. You like Potions better and I like charms better." Rex told Rene.
"True I like potions most people don't but I think its the professor the y do not like" she replied looking away from him and around the classroom

Victoria heard a noise to her left and saw that soemone had sat next to her. From the looks of her she appeared to be in Ravenclaw. 'Maybe a third year?' She thought.
She smiled at the little red-haired, something they had in common, girl.
"Hi there. My name's Victoria. What's yours?" she held out her hand to the girl.
Helena entered slowly, looking around for a seat. "Good morning, professor Truebridge," she said, trying to smile.
And there she is, thought Helena, as she saw her friend sit at a table. "Mind if I join you?" she asked, smiling to Georgiana.
Passing from page to page, trying to understand something, Georgiana was more confused than ever. Merlin it is so early! she thought. She could be right now on her bed sleeping and not trying to figure it out what Ancient Runes was about. It seems confusing.
Something interrupted her thoughts, she heard a voice and looked up to see Helena "Hey there!" she smiled "Of course!, sit down". At least she won't be waiting for the class to begin trying to understand Ancient Runes. "How are you? Ready for the first class?" she asked while closing her book.

Doop, doo, do, dee, bop.
Boredom.
Ellie was in that state until someone came up to her. Of course, she'd NEVER be bored. Hahaha. "Hi, Chloe." She smiled up at the girl. "Ellie." She introduced. "And sure, I don't see why not."

Brittany was relieved to see that he waved back at her. She was afraid he would you know hate her for not coming after him and seeing if he was alright. Even though that definetly still wasnt out of the question becuase she actually had a plan to corner him at the end of class anyway. But she did otice he was trying to turn around fairly quickly. looking up at her the shinner around his left clearly visiable " cool did you do the US or EU ... you want to meet for lunch "
Ethan's crooked grin turned to a low chuckle as the girl mentioned her awake status. He'd guessed it was fairly obvious how tired he was. "Yeah, I'm pretty tired," he agreed. "You're not?" he asked as he mocked a slight frown. "How do you manage to be so wide awake so early in the day?"
The 16 year old quickly glanced up at the front of the room - no, class wasn't starting yet - before he looked back at the girl next to him. Smiling, he nodded. "Good to meet you Cassie," he said, accepting her offered hand. "I'm Ethan Flint... and I'm fine, other than wishing my head was back on my pillow... and the fact that Ancient Runes isn't exactly my favorite class." He added this last part in a very low whisper as he leaned closer to Cassie, so only the girl next to him would hear. Ancient Runes was an absolute snore which certainly wasn't helped by the fact that he was already this close to dreamland as it was.
Ethan glanced up just as another yawn was threatening to escape and saw a familiar face appear at his table. "So there you are," he said, trying to smile but instead lifting his hand to cover the yawn he was unable to stifle. He shrugged slightly. How was everyone so awake at this hour - Cassie, Dozer, the counting boy, everyone else in the room, he noticed as he looked around. Sure, he figured the professor would be wide-awake - didn't most old people get up before the sun? - but Ethan was a definite night owl and figured at least someone else would be. He shrugged once more before turning his eyes back to his brother as he watched him take out his supplies. "Prepared, are we?" he commented as he let his eyes rest on his own messenger bag. Maybe he should take out his own supplies... nah, that could wait a minute. Too much effort right now.
Ethan looked back over at Cassie as Dozer seemed to notice her. "This is Cassie," he informed his half-brother. Turning back to the girl, he nodded towards the boy at their table, "My brother, Dozer."
Dozer gave yet another polite nod as he was introduced to the girl sitting with Ethan. "Nice to meet you Cassie." He vaguely wondered what connection she had with his brother but didn't pursue the topic. Maybe it was just a coincidence. Meeting new people was always nice. He should know. Glancing around again he noticed Georgiana sitting off with some other first years. She seemed a bit preoccupied so he didn't bother with a greeting.
Ethan's comment made him chuckle as he glanced down at his ready supplies. "That I am. I'm not slacking off again this year. I promised Mom good marks on the end of year exams." He said it sternly, with a matter of fact air. Dozer wasn't going to disappoint her this year.
The 15 year old looked around the room and wondered when they were going to begin. Ancient Runes was by far one of his least favorite classes so the sooner they got started the sooner it would end. Sighing, he turned his attention back to his companions.
"So, Cassie was it? What year are you in?" He almost added that he didn't recognize her but again, the reason behind that was obvious. Last year hadn't exactly been his best year.

She also saw that a second person had joined her at the table. She held out her hand to the second girl as well. "Hello. My name is Victoria."

"Perhaps I am simply used to seeing you smiling, Lexi." Truebridge answered quietly and turned his attention elsewhere.
Even in the worst of situations, that young Gryffindor had always found something to smile about.

"Morning Professor Truebridge." The ravenclaw nodded, as he turned to look who was in the classroom.
"Morning, Finlay." Truebridge paused and eyed the boy. "It surely isn't necessary for me to point out that if you fight in my classroom you'll regret it deeply."
Surely.
Particularly with that prefect badge the boy was sporting.

""Ancient Runes. I've heard many people in my life call the subject 'boring' or 'useless'. As with any subject however, it is one that you will get as much out of as what you put in." Truebridge looked around.
"You each have a textbook in front of you on the table." He flicked his hand and from the shelf came a textbook which duplicated itself dozens of times over.
"Don't open them." No really, don't. "Before we get to that point, perhaps you would each raise your hand and tell the class something you know about Runes, and if you don't know anything, please share your opinion on whether or not you think Runes are a useful subject so that I know who needs convincing."

Victoria could see by the colors on her robes that she was a Gryffindor. She had heard that there had been some sort of rivalry between her own house and Gryffindor. Victoria couldn't understand why though. Chloe seemed nice enough.

Chloe had met two new people today which was great but before she could even get to talking to them class started. She heard the professor ask a question and had an idea of an answer and responded with her hand raised, "Runes can be used for protection.".

Closing the book Truebridge had loaned him as he finished reading juuuuuuuust as the man started teaching, Jake placed it in the corner of the desk, equidistant from both edges of the table before raising his hand.
"Straight lines. All in straight lines. And no horizontal lines."
He was good at remembering.

Watching as Truebridge handed out textbooks, Simon listened intently to the man leaving the book alone on the desk. Thinking over his question, the boy tried to decide what to mention seeing as he did know quite a bit about runes, finally opting for something they learned last term and raised his hand to answer.
"There are five Quileute runes and they are the Rune of Battle, the Rune of Protection, the Rune of the Hunter, the Rune of the Craftsman, and the Blank Rune," he replied lowering his hand.
Victoria shook the girl's hand. "Nice to meet you too, Ellie." She smiled back. "I see that you're in Ravenclaw. That's great! Is this your first time taking Ancient Runes?"
She also saw that a second person had joined her at the table. She held out her hand to the second girl as well. "Hello. My name is Victoria."
Ellie shook her head.
"Naww.... Well," she bit her lip, thinking, "Naww. I've taken it. Just never stuck with it."
Simplest way to put it.

Now, Truebridge. And Runes. And....most likely a headache.

Ermm.... Runes, right.
Ellie thought about this. HARD. And she remembered the project! Art project of funness! Back when, when they made their own bag to keep their Runes set in.
So THERE. She did retain information after all. "They come in sets."
CHyeah.

Lexi gave Truebs a great big smile at his comment. He was right. She did typically smile... She could angst it up AND smile for the lovely Runes Professor, yes? Of course. Listening to his little speil to the class she peered at the Runes textbook and then raised her hand. "Sir, I don't think Runes is useless, by any means... I have just never understood it. Not once has the subject ever made sense to me," she said in a quiet voice.
Dozer wasn't quite sure what type of answer the Professor was looking for but he had read up a bit before hand. When he had made that promise to his mom he had been serious. The 15 year old glanced around once and then raised his hand.
"Runes are a type of alphabet used for magic and divination." He paused. "At least that's what I've read. I'm not sure I completely understand the concept though."
<~~ Pride!! Because really... what do YOU have to be proud about? :<3:

Victoria heard the Professor speak and looked to where he was standing at the front of the class. She scanned the room and saw that no other hands were up yet. She shyly raised her hand. Then, Professor Truebridge called on her.
"Well, I've always wanted to learn more about it. I'm afraid I don't know very much though. We didn't exactly have a class for it back home. Just a few books in the library. I'm happy that there's one here though. I've always wanted to learn about them. Ancient Runes is a generally theoretical subject that studies the ancient runic scripts." Victoria blushed as she sat back down.

Before Mia could answer Marie or even acknowledge Evelyn and the little first year snake, the Professor started to address the class. So she dragged her gaze away from Salander and listened to what the Professor was saying.
At his question, Mia raised her hand. "Runes are used for writing messages, inscriptions and epitahs. They are also used for amulets and charms, as an oracle for divination and for rituals, magic and spells. They have been around since the Dark Ages when waves of immigrants came to settle in Britain. The Friesians from the Netherlands, the Angles and Saxons from Germany, then the Jutes and Norseman from Scandinavia. They each brought with them their ancient symbols known as runes. There were twenty four of them and they are collectively known as the 'Futhark.'"

"You're right." He paused. "Nothing much anyway." Heeeh. Jimmy grinned but then he turned serious.
"Yeah. I know. But... you're my friend Lexi and you were alone." Simple.

Aww class was starting.
Jim listened to Truebridge-the-fight-breaker-upper and smirked at the warning he gave Finn. Heh. Yeah. It was TOTALLY Finn's fault. Grin.
He didn't open the book. He did raise his hand though.
Something he knew about Runes. Hmmm. "There are three main uses for runes. A writing system, an oracle of the future and for natural and elemental magic."
That'd do. He figured others would say about the same thing.
Pause.
"And... yes, they're useful."
He couldn't lie about that.

well professor, the primary characteristic which distinguishes a runic alphabet from other alphabets is that each letter, or rune, has a meaning. Furthermore, they are also used for divinatory readings and to create magical spells.
