First lesson since his most recent return to Hogwarts and Ethan Truebridge was sitting at his desk in the front of the classroom, a magical gramophone sat on his desk, the soundtrack of Les Misérables playing quietly.
The blackboard was apparently 'singing' along, as the words were sung on the record, in runic the translations appeared on the board and then disappeared again moments later.
Truebridge ignored it and kept his hazel-green eyes on the door, watching as the students began to file in.
"Sit wherever you like. Four to six people at each table if you please."
SPOILER!!: classroom description
The classroom is bright and airy, very clean and comfortable. There are no desks in this classroom, rather there are several wooden tables which would fit between four and six students quite comfortably. The tables are arranged rather higgledy piggledy, all out of alignment with each other and yet there is plenty of room to weave through the tables and walk up to the front of the classroom, or down to the back.
The front of the classroom has a large blackboard, charmed to write on itself,and when it isn't taking notes it quite often it has something to say, though you'll need to transcribe it from runic to English to make any sense of it. Truebridge also has a desk at the front of the class, set to one side, and a perfect view of all the tables arranged haphazardly around the room.
At the back of the classroom, set to one side, there is the door out into the corridor. Along the back wall there is a large bookshelf almost overflowing with books, mostly old, all very well taken care of. You're welcome to look at any of these books but if any harm befalls the tomes, there will be a severe price to pay. A long and comfortable couch takes up the rest of the back wall.
The windows along the remaining side, opposite the door and Truebridge's desk have soft white curtains that are almost transparent. When pulled they simply diffuse the light and ensure it is not too bright, allowing the room to stay bright and lit at all times. The window frames are the most interesting, if you go and inspect them, all of the exposed wood has been painstakingly carved with runes, mostly bindrunes and rune charms, set in ligature and carved then stained red. These have all been activated and almost thrum under your fingertips. No cold will pass these windows, no student will fall to their deaths. It is a barrier of safety and of comfort, and a good example of runic magic. The door into the classroom is similarly marked.

Really, they had to use their own blood for this?
"That would be blood and the color would be red." She said hesitantly putting her hand in the air. "We're not really gonna use our own blood for this are we?" Because she did not feel like bleeding today.
Mia raised her hand in the air. "Er...I believe runes were originally stained by blood." Please let that not be the case now. She did not want to be pricking her finger to stain her runes. "Although there is an alternative to that and that would be red ochre and earth pigment. Symbolically it served as the blood of the earth. So the colour of course is red."
"Looking over from his desk he smiled.*
"Great job Mia!"
*Putting up his hand Matty said.*
"Originally runes were stained with blood; either the blood of the person using them, or the blood of a sacrificed human being or animal."
*Matty didn't like the sound of that but he didn't mind blood. He'd seen enough of it by getting so many bloody noses.*
Patroclus was still so pleased with his Desk of Runes, that it was only just that he heard what Professor Truebridge had said, and by some magic stroke of luck Patroclus was quite sure he knew the answer.
"Professor, I believe to stain a rune you use Red Ochre," the Lion smiled, "Something earthly just like the runes!"
*Putting his hand up Matty remembered that not only blood could be used.*
"Also saliva, sweat, and tears?"
*Matty had a feeling there were more but he wasn't sure. And those were all used in the old days. Did they use other things now? He kind of hoped so.*
As Dianna raised her hand, she hoped what she and her other classmates have said will not be done by them. She didn't want to have and infection on her finger again. *shudders*
"If I am not mistaken, it would be blood as the color will be..red." she said as she lowered her hand.
"Yes you can use whichever method you like, or both, as you please." Truebridge answered.
ooc: you slay me. Boring little ministry worker? We laugh. Derisively.
He finished his rounds and passed Jake's desk again hust as the boy asked another question.
"Yes, you can use it to carve in general, but it is far more difficult to form the shapes with just the 'Intaglio' aspect, and there is an addition to the wand movement -two taps on the surface before moving your wand in a smooth line against the surface you are intending to carve. And of course it is a component part of several other specialty spells, like the one we used in Defense Class to conjure carved cucumbers for Kappa."
He cleared his throat.
"Alright now for the final part of the lesson. While it is not entirely necessary, there is one final step which will help to seal in the magic, and give your carved rune life. This is far more important when you are making a personal rune set than what it is to carve into other surfaces, as it will attune the runes to you on a personal level. Can anyone tell the class what is used to stain the runes, and what colour the runes are to be stained?"
Raven didn't answer, he is basically no idea. he just listen to every answer given by the class
Kurumi smiled at Professor Truebridge as he complimented her work.
Kurumi looked down at her now finished desk. What color? She sure hoped that crimson was appropriate because, well, that is the color she had stained her wood with. Timidly, Kurumi raised her hand. "Professor, would red or crimson be appropriate?" Then again, she supposed the color was more along the lines of maroon or rosewood, but no need to get that specific.
"Any shade of red is fine." Truebridge agreed, "In a traditional sense."

"Thats right, blood was the original choice and red ochre is a replacement choice, and very much for the symbolism involved."

"Thats right other bodily fluids are permitted. It's all a matter of uniting the rune with its creator and more firmly bonding it to the intent. However blood, and red ochre which is symbolic of blood, and the colour red in general, are more effective depending on the magic to be cast."

"You don't have to use blood today. However, you may wish to consider it when you create your own rune sets, and indeed if you are creating a particularly powerful runespell then blood is the best answer. For those of you who have coloured your runes magically, that is fine too. Much of it is a matter of symbolism, and indeed if you prefer not to do things the old ways I am fine with that," Obviously or he wouldn't have taught them the Intaglio method, "But it is still important for you to know the traditional and ancient methods, even if you put your own interpretations on them in the long run. So the last thing we will do before class ends is colour our runes. He set up some red ochre that had previously been mixed from powder with oils in bowls on each table, tiny brushes set for each group and a second bowl with water and a few cloths as well.
"No blood today." He wasn't in the mood to deal with any squeamish children, "But if anyone wishes to use blood for the seal next time, you may whenever you wish, come into the classroom and carve some more runes and use your blood by adding just a few drops into the red ochre mix."
He headed up to the board and gave it a tap. Startled, the blackboard began writing again. It had apparently dozed off.
"The homework will be up shortly. Finish painting the red ochre into the rune carvings you just made, and then you may leave." ooc: Class will close in 24 hours.
Yeah so not gonna do that. She liked her blood right where it was thank you very much. And that was in her body. Maybe one day she might be brave enough to stain a set of runes with her own blood.
When the Professor had set the bowls down onto the table, Mia picked up a brush and dipped it into the mixture. Then she set about painting her runes with calm and patience, working with her hands always brings. What a shame she couldn't do the same when working with her wand.
Finishing off the last rune, Mia cleaned off her brush with the water and then dried it on the cloth before placing it back onto her desk. She looked around at the rest of the group and gave them a smile before placing her stuff back into her bag and standing up.
"Thanks Professor Truebridge. That was a great lesson." She said as she hoisted her bag onto her shoulder and headed for the door.
*Picking up brush Matty smiled. In an odd way it rem*inded him of paint class when he was a kid. Dipping the brush he then slowly ran it over his runes. He was very glad that they wouldn't be spitting, sweating, or bleeding in class today. That seemed to make things a bit of a downer. Once done he cleaned up, picked up his pack and headed out.*
"Thank you sir, see you next class."
Taking a small brush in hand, she started painting her runes. Truthfully, they do look more alive when painted bloody red. Brushing careful strokes she finished in no time.
"Thanks Professor for the wonderful lesson." Di said as she fixed her belongings and left.

Well, she hadn't done it properly with the supplies that Professor Truebridge had suggested, she had used Pingo instead, but adding an extra coat of color never hurt anybody. Taking one of the red ochre containers and returning to her desk, Kurumi went to painting over the runes she had carved. Thank Merlin's pointy hat that they didn't have to use blood. Sure, she understood the importance of blood in many potions and spells, but that didn't mean she liked it. Blood always made her a little queasy. Kurumi had nearly gagged when a Hufflepuff boy had suggested spitting into the runes. That was just...gross...and seemed very unsanitary.
Having finished painting over all her runes, Kurumi waited a moment for it all to dry. As she waited, she began to wonder what Professor Truebridge was going to do with the desks they had carved into. Cast a spell and erase all their hard work? Or had they all just picked their assigned seats for the rest of the term?
Seeing that the red ochre had dried, Kurumi put all her books and parchment back in her bag and flung it over her shoulder. "Thank you for the lesson, Professor Truebridge," she smiled with a bow. "If you don't mind my asking, will we be using these desks for the final?" Seemed likely considering they had carved runes that they thought would be useful for studying and classwork.

"I do hope so." Yes he would prefer it if they all came back. And Matty had proved to be an excellent student and active member of the class.

Finding what the Professor to be slightly humorous Patroclus could help but laughing gently at his comment, 'No blood today' funny man.
Moving to the front of the room, the Prefect selected a pot of ochre and returned to his and Destiny's desk, where he tip the brush into the rich crimson oil and then dragged it over and onto the runes he had craved. The oil ran into the craving, pooling and leeching their colour into the wood. Once they had tried, Patroclus packed his things, whispered "Good bye," to Destiny and headed towards the door.
As he arrived at the desk of Truebridge, the Prefect smiled, "Thanks for an awesome lesson Sir," first Runes lesson, and first lesson of the term. Great way to get started.

Well, that was a relief. He wasn't just going to wipe all their work away with a simple spell. She would have to make sure that she got her desk each lesson so that she could admire her work reap all the benefits of the runes she carved. "In that case, then I hope you are here for a long time, Professor," Kurumi smiled as she adjusted the strap of her bag over her shoulder a bit. The her smiled turned into a nervous one. Assuming the final is held indoors... Well, there had been stranger things at Hogwarts. "Thank you again for the lesson," she bowed once more before making her way towards the door.

After she took off her ridiculous goggles, Helena took out her wand and used a simple spell to colour the freshly carved runes. She raised her hand. "Professor? If we don't use blood, will the runes... 'work'?" If the answer was no, she would never use blood anyway.

Blood, that is Raven need to strengthen his magic, what a fascinating king of coloring, but the professor no blood today, so Raven is going to paint it by choosing the given materials. Raven colored his runes immediately, and finish it in a very meaningful stroke.
"Thanks Professor for the wonderful lesson, Good day again" Raven say, before he march up into exit
"They can and do use the galdr." Truebridge corrected, "However, with little to no magical ability within themselves, the magical effect of the rune is certainly not as powerful, if it has any sort of magic to it at all. The nature of the rune allows them to be used for divinatory purposes by muggles and wizards alike, however, as with any magic, and with many forms of divination for example, full understanding is much harder for a muggle to reach." Sabel. Questioner.
But at least the boy's questions were good ones, and Truebridge was always willing to answer questions directed at him by students.

Sabel's attention was drawn back to the Professor as he explained the nature of Runes more in regard to the muggle side of things. A slow nod left him as he mulled the words over. So muggles could use magic, albeit with difficulty and little success. Still, wasn't that something? How many wizards knew this? How many Dark Arts Practitioners? Pureblood fanatics? It wasn't much, but something was still something.
Nodding his head a little, he spared Truebridge a small smile, holding back the rest of his questions for his own silent debate. "Thank you, Professor."
His attention once again returned to dusting out his runes, listening quietly as the discussion turned to binding and making runes personal with blood. It seemed a rather strange and almost taboo subject, to mark something in blood as the implications and symbology were immense. But then that was the purpose of magic, to have power through symbols and words and if one wanted to be fair, all things could be taboo from one perspective or another. There was relief however, that they would not be marking them with blood. At least not yet. Gave everyone a bit of time to mull things over.
Once he was satisfied his runes were clear enough to paint, he carefully filled the grooves with the paint, doing two coats before replacing the brush and cleaning up. There was satisfaction in the design, in the choice of runes and the outcome and in the process of being able to do something actively creative. Luin looked down at her rune and then at the bowl and brush on her desk. She brought out quill and parchment and quickly jotted down her notes from the class on the side away from her rune and put them away again. She then started painting in her runes. Looking at the paint stuff warily, Jake looked down at the rune on the top of the table and blue away the sawdust before he started. Once Jake had a brush he painted some of the stuff very clearly on his carved rune. He kind of... liked it the way it was.
Once the first was done, Jake clearly did the second, before ducking under the table to paint over the third. He really REALLY had to do it sparingly now, else it would drip.
And, almost as an afterthough, Jake painted over his little carved message as well. Hehe.
When he was finally done, Jake got back up, put the brush in the water to wash it off and wiped it dry, staying standing and stretching his back. Once he'd packed his stuff away and slung his bag over his shoulder, Jake stood and approached Jake, reaching into his bag again.
"I have your book, Professor Truebridge," he smiled slightly. "I enjoyed it." 'NOTHER, PEASE! "And I loved the lesson. I swear, you could make any lesson interesting.

Of course, having been listening to the discussion and writing down a few things in her notebook, Evelyn looked over to the professor when he gave the okay to paint in their carved runes on the table. With red? Well, not her choice of color but if it’s what’s used, then so be it.
She didn’t particularly enjoy the fact that they could use their own blood in the future though. No, that was not something she’d be doing. It just…
Pfft.
Taking a brush, she barely dipped it into the red mixture before leaning over her runes and carefully painting the middles of them to color them red. It didn't take all that long, but it probably took longer than necessary. She wanted them to be perfect! By the third rune, Tiwaz, it seemed she was finally done. Rinsing the brush in the water and letting it dry on the cloth, Evelyn packed up her bags before standing up and pushing in her seat. Mwaha! Done.
"Goodbye, Professor Truebridge. Have a nice day." She smiled on the way out, before slowing down and waiting outside the door of course. Can't leave Destiny and Marie!

Yeah blood was not something Simon wanted to deal with right now or for that matter most times. People could chose to use it but not him and he was thankful Professor Truebridge provided the worthy and accepted substitution for the final step.
Picking up the handle of one of the offered paint brushes and dipped the tip into the red ochre mixture. Satisfied he had a decent amount of the liquid on his brush the sixth year went about painting each of the runes he had carved in turn. When it was complete and each rune was saturated and stained red by his progress, Simon dipped the brush in the water this time to rinse before drying it off with the cloth and using the cloth to wipe any spill he may have made in the progress.

Oh, hey! Class was finally coming to a close!
To be honest, it hadn't lasted all that long at all, but since this subject was one Sierra struggled in, it just seemed to last double the amount of time others did. It had been a fun lesson, though, and she hadn't done nearly as terrible as she imagined she would. Actually, she really didn't do terrible at all, considering she'd actually managed to carve three runes into the table.
...but now the runes were meant to be painted, so before Sierra packed her bags to leave, she dipped a brush into the red ochre and then began coloring her runes. Hmm. The red ochre did give them a nice finishing touch. Sierra gave her runes a good look before grabbing her bag and stepping away from the table. As she walked out the door, she turned and gave the professor a small wave. She'd give him a nice compliment on the lesson, too, but mehh--she just wanted to take nap, honestly.
Lexi abandoned her ... borin. Whatever it was. She didn't like it. It seriously made her hand hurt trying to CARVE the runes out. Who wanted to do manual labor when they had a WAND? Not Lexi that was for sure.
Looking at her piece of wood for a moment she decided that she was indeed ready to have a go at the desk. Clearing her throat she got her wand in place and said, "Intaglio Thurisaz thurisaz thurisaz thurisaz thurisaz thurisaz...." She repeated herself until the rune was finally carved. Taking her wand away she beamed at it and gave a little bounce in her seat. YAY! She was doing it well. It LOOKED like the rune and everything.
She moved on to the next rune then, "Intaglio Ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz anzus..." Same as before she repeated the chant until she had completely carved the rune into the surface of the desk. Casting a glance around she smiled slightly. HERS loked amazing. REally. It did. She was so proud of her handywork she SO wished she had her camera on hand to snap a quick pic of it. Mhm!
"Intaglio Kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz..." she chanted. The third and final rune was FINALLY done. YAY! They were all sufficiently spaced out across her tabletop and looked FABULOUS. Sticking her wand back in it's holster she beamed and ran her fingers across each carving just... 'cause. Hehehe.
Hearing Truebs' next instruction she took one of the paintbrushes and set to work CAREFULLY painting each of her runes with the red ochre. Ooooh it was SO pretty. All of them were. Mhm. She took her time and painted each one with great care, making sure to get into every nook and cranny of the carvings. When she was finally done to her satisfaction she rose from her seat, returned the brush and her safety equiptment to their correct places and began to gather her things. Pausing for a moment she turned to smile at Truebs. "Thank you for an amazing lesson, sir. First time Runes has EVER made sense to me," she GUSHED at him. "Have a great day!"

They didn't have to use their own blood... or any blood at all to do this final step. Staining the runes with the mixture that Trues set on the table would be easy now. This was a good thing because that meant class would be over and she would finally be able to go find James and hopefully find out what was going on with him.
After putting everything away so she would be sure not to get any stain on it she set her bag on the floor. She then grabbed one of the paint brushes, dipped it in the stain and very carefully started to fill in the runes that she had carved into the table. It was actually kinda cool knowing that these symbols would be on the table the whole year.
Vandalizing school property in the name of education.
How cool was that?
After putting the finishing touches on her runes she cleaned out the paint brush and laid it on the cloth to dry. She then admired her work for a minute before getting up to leave.
"Um, thanks fornot letting me slackgetting me motivated Professor. Class wasway too long interesting. Gotta go now. Have a great day." She said as she grabbed her bag and headed out the door.
Now to find James. Where could he be? Hopefully not in his common room... where she couldn't get to him.
