First lesson since his most recent return to Hogwarts and Ethan Truebridge was sitting at his desk in the front of the classroom, a magical gramophone sat on his desk, the soundtrack of Les Misérables playing quietly.
The blackboard was apparently 'singing' along, as the words were sung on the record, in runic the translations appeared on the board and then disappeared again moments later.
Truebridge ignored it and kept his hazel-green eyes on the door, watching as the students began to file in.
"Sit wherever you like. Four to six people at each table if you please."
SPOILER!!: classroom description
The classroom is bright and airy, very clean and comfortable. There are no desks in this classroom, rather there are several wooden tables which would fit between four and six students quite comfortably. The tables are arranged rather higgledy piggledy, all out of alignment with each other and yet there is plenty of room to weave through the tables and walk up to the front of the classroom, or down to the back.
The front of the classroom has a large blackboard, charmed to write on itself, and when it isn't taking notes it quite often it has something to say, though you'll need to transcribe it from runic to English to make any sense of it. Truebridge also has a desk at the front of the class, set to one side, and a perfect view of all the tables arranged haphazardly around the room.
At the back of the classroom, set to one side, there is the door out into the corridor. Along the back wall there is a large bookshelf almost overflowing with books, mostly old, all very well taken care of. You're welcome to look at any of these books but if any harm befalls the tomes, there will be a severe price to pay. A long and comfortable couch takes up the rest of the back wall.
The windows along the remaining side, opposite the door and Truebridge's desk have soft white curtains that are almost transparent. When pulled they simply diffuse the light and ensure it is not too bright, allowing the room to stay bright and lit at all times. The window frames are the most interesting, if you go and inspect them, all of the exposed wood has been painstakingly carved with runes, mostly bindrunes and rune charms, set in ligature and carved then stained red. These have all been activated and almost thrum under your fingertips. No cold will pass these windows, no student will fall to their deaths. It is a barrier of safety and of comfort, and a good example of runic magic. The door into the classroom is similarly marked.
ooc note: Please note that class has finished. The thread will be open for a short time longer to allow everyone to complete the last task. Please read the following posts to catch up with the lesson, or the latest one if you wish to jump in on the current activity/question. Not all of Truebridge's posts are included here, just those relevant to the progression of the lesson.
"I shall teach you both and you can practice whichever you like. We'll practice on spare pieces of wood and when you are confident of which method you prefer, we'll work on the tables." Truebridge conjured a piece of wood and simply duplicated it, passing it out by charming one piece to float over to each student and come to a gentle rest on the table in front of them. "Please collect some gloves and goggles from this box here. You must wear these." He summoned a box and placed it on his desk. Eh. If it were up to him he'd let them go to it without worry about protective gear but apparently parents got jumpy about such things these days.
"We'll begin with the magical method. Some of you may remember a similar sounding spell from a class I taught on Kappa a few years back. The incantation is 'Intaglio', and the wand movement is simply moving your wand against the surface exactly where you wish to cut. The trick with the intent here is that you need to keep in mind the rune you are attempting to carve. Concentrate on the meaning and on the name of the rune, repeating it over and over until you are done. For example, if I wished to carve Uruz, I would touch my wand to the wood, and say' Intaglio Uruz uruz uruz uruz uruz...' until I have completed the shape of the Uruz rune." He paused.
"So the incantation and the intent changes as you carve different runes. Is that understood? You may practice on the pieces of wood I handed out just now, but you may not cut into the table yet. Furthermore, you'll find that the worst that will happen as far as injuring yourself goes, is a cut and a bit of blood, you certainly won't severe a finger or anything of that sort. It isn't that sort of spell. But of course you'll all be particularly careful won't you? "
ooc: going to leave it here for a bit. Feel free to practice the spell and carve up your bit of wood. Anyone not wearing the provided gloves and goggles will be in a lot of trouble IC. Truebridge will be around to check people's work and provide help. Remember, no carving the table just yet.
Hmm this seemed easy enough. All she had to do was concentrate on what she was doing... Okay not so easy. With all that was happening her mind was wondering about 20 different times every five seconds *sigh*. And which one was she going to use? She mind as well used the one she called out in class even though everyone already called it out . But she did want to be different... Nahhh, she'd just go with that one.
Clearing her throat softly she rolled up her sleeves before beginning. Concentrating hard... well hard as she could she began "Intaglio... Kenaz Kenaz Kenaz". Did they have to say it over and over each line they made?
Lex was surprised that the second attempt at carving the symbol was MUCH better than the first. Excellent. Carving the Runes were not the problem... it was understanding them that was typically the problem. Smiling at her piece of wood she then cast a glance around and was amazed at the craziness that had ensued since she was concentrating so hard. Bleh. Whatever.
Taking a deep breath she moved her wand to an unmarked part of the wood and said, "Intaglio Kenaz, Kenaz, Kenaz, Kenaz, Kenaz, Kenaz..." She continued until the rune was carved there. She grimaced. It wasn't very pretty... Oh well. It would do. Maybe.
Getting the gloves and goggles, Kay walked back to her sit. The first class of the year and drama already. Why were students leaving in the middle of the class? Shaking her head she put the goggles on. 'these feel fun.' she thought looking around. Grabbing her gloves next she put them on and put up her wood.
Pointing her wand...."Intaglio Uruz Uruz Uruz Uruz." She said over and over. Yes it looked like it was working and then.......fail. *sigh* 'ok try again' Pointing her wand again..."Intaglio Uruz Uruz Uruz Uruz Uruz Uruz." Watching her wand cut the wood she smiled. 'Not great but better.' Keep trying.
Yep things were better and she still had time to keep trying.

At least they werent going to start on the desk, a fact made true as the professor delievered pieces of wood to each of the student desks with one flick of the rest. Simon listened carefully to the instructions and the incantation needed, absently murmering it to practice and until he was ready to actually try it out on his piece.
"Intaglio Sowilo," he cast, his wand pointed at the wood and moving it to make the mark. The whole time imagining it and repeating Sowilo in his head to keep the intent strong to complete his task. Stopping to inspect his work, he shruged, the carving ragged on the surface.

A few minutes later, Sierra was back to working on carving the symbol for Eihwaz into her wood. "Intaglio Eihwaz, Eihwaz, Eihwaz...," she said, as she slowly moved her wand in what she hoped was the right direction. She stopped the incantation and gently moved her wand away, not wanting to accidentally perform an unintentional carving on something like the table or a textbook.
Her eyes flickered back to the textbook, and she compared the symbol printed in it to what she'd already carved into the wood. Sure, she had to tilt her head sideways a little to really get a true picture of what she'd done, but it looked close enough. She still wasn't finished, though. No, her backwards, slanted Z needed just one more line on the bottom. "Intaglio Eihwaz, Eihwaz, Eihwaz...," she said again, as she continued to trace her wand along the wood.
Oh, she was supposed to be thinking about the rune's meaning, too, right? Err...change? Confrontation of fears? Transformation? Yup, that was her rune alright. So with thoughts of changing her feelings towards the subject she was currently in class for, Sierra allowed to wand to etch away at the wood.

Marie sat there not paying attention to anything going on around her. She really wanted this class to be over. She needed to find out what was going on with her boyfriend and Neptune. She didn't even bother moving when Professor Truebridge came over and opened her book back up. It wasn't like she was planning on using it now anyway.
Not bothering to take the things Salander tried handing her she just continued to sit and stare. She wouldn't be needing those materials anyway, not like she was going to use them. Why should she care now anyway? If James didn't think it was important enough to be in class then she didn't think it was important enough to participate. Yeah, she was so going to be kicking herself later for those thoughts.
It wasn't until she had a face full of water that she snapped out of the daze she was in. "What the hell was that for?" she shouted as she jumped up from her seat. Okay, so maybe there had been a fire at their table but she didn't know that. Heck she didn't know anything that was going on around them now.
Drying her face off with Salander's robes... since he seemed to be the one that got her wet, she gave him a shove. "Do I look like I needed a shower?" If she wasn't in a bad mood before she sure was now.
sorry I haven't replied to everyone, but I read everything, I promise.

Truebridge began walking around the classroom to inspect their progress. Plenty of students were getting the hang of it and he nodded approvingly, offering the occasional 'good work' or 'thats it' as he passed their tables.

Kurumi took a pair of goggles and put them on her face only to find that they were five times the size that they should be and were certainly not going to do a good job at protecting her with them falling off her face. Putting those back, she picked up another pair that were just a tad big, but seemed fitting for the task at hand. After picking up a piece of wood and a pair of gloves, Kurumi began to return to her seat when she felt a knot form in her stomach as she remembered nearly setting her desk on fire last term in Transfiguration. A carving spell wouldn't set things on fire, would it?
Setting her piece of wood on the table, Kurumi flipped through her textbook for what looked like was the simplest of the runes to try out first. "OK, Kenaz it is," she said to herself. No argument there. Taking a deep breath, Kurumi pointed her wand at the wood and first just went through the movements of the spell without saying anything aloud. After a few practice runs like thing, Kurumi took another deep breath. Here goes nothing. "Intaglio Kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz kenaz kenazkenaz kenazkenaz kenaz..." Things were going smoothly, until that last kenaz when Kurumi's piece of wood shot off from her desk, smacked right the chalkboard, and went shooting off back towards the class. Hopefully it wouldn't hit anyone...Kurumi couldn't deal with more drama at the moment...
Kurumi's head shot around and searched the sky for the piece of wood. "W-W-Watch out!" she whimpered.
Truebridge ducked.
"A bit too much passion in that Kenaz perhaps, Kurumi."

"AHHH!!!"He screamed, one eye half covered.
...
Really. Couldn't have been that bad.
"Stand up, you're fine." Suck it up. Really. "A scratch like that is easily dealt with." Truebridge did try his best to sound comforting.
He tried.
"Let me take a look."

First cookie dough carrying birds and now attack by wood chip.
Adam's forehead was beginning to swell a bit where the wood and first smacked into him, so that needed to be attended to first. Reaching into her pocket, Kurumi pulled out her handkerchief and pointed her wand at it."A-A-Aguamenti," she whimpered as a small stream of water came out of her wand and soaked her handkerchief. After a quick freezing charm, Kurumi set the now ice cold handkerchief on his forehead. "Here, that should help a little..."
Ug, she really didn't need this right now. Her nerves were already shot.
Holding the magic made ice pack steady, Kurumi looked at her piece of wood. Hey, at least she had managed to successfully carve the rune into it!
"Alright Kurumi. Take a seat and try to keep a hold of your piece of wood alright?" Truebridge winked at the Gryffindor.

Heaving a deep sigh, she stood up on shaky legs and headed up the front and picked out some goggles and gloves before returning to her table and sighing again. And what was even worse was that Finn, Sal, Marie and the little first year was all sitting with her so she was going to look like an absolute moron if this went wrong.
She put the gloves on her hands and the goggles over her eyes and then picked up her wand. "Be good to me." She murmured quietly giving her wand a little shake and then turning back to the piece of wood.
Sweeping her wand over the wood, Mia said the incantation. "Intaglio...Thurisaz...Thurisa...Thuris...Thuri... Thur...Thu...Th..." Yes it hadn't taken long and her mind had began to wander off and she was losing her focus. Ironic that she was trying carve a rune that is supposed to help with concentration and she was losing hers very quickly.
With a frustrated little grunt, Mia stabbed her wand at the piece of wood and sparks flew out of the end of it.
Ooops.

And Tiwaz for strengthening resolve and compete. he nodded his head. Right. Compete. And suddenly theres an evil cackle somewhere echoing in his head.
He turned his head towards Jimmy and the blond Ravenclaw girl go back and forth and then asked to be excused. Dang... Dramatitis. Ridiculously contagious it looks it. Maybe he ought to touch base with Jimmy later, never knew him to lose his cool like that.
His attention returned to Truebridge as he began to demonstrate the spell. He then reached out for several protective gears and distributed them to their group, handing one directly to Marie. It was then when he noticed the change in her demeanor. Gone was her smile from earlier, now she was moping, much like he was.
He missed something again didnt he?
He slapped the protective gears on and focused on his piece of wood "Innntaaglioww Teeee-wazzzzz " he uttered, repeating the spell as it carved out a straight vertical line, wood shavings curving up and falling out as he goes. But some commotion up front distracted him, moving his goggles up to have a better look. Seems like Kurumi was turning her piece of wood into some kind of rocket, since it looked to have smacked a fellow Gryffie in the head.
And for the first time since the class started, his mood began to lighten, snickering at the chaos of the young Gryffindors. But he just about missed Mia muttering beside him, sparks from her wand falling into his work area....
Suddenly he could feel heat and a strange popping sound. He looked back down at the work area, and saw the wood shavings were on fire.....
THE WOOD SHAVINGS WERE ON FIRE!!!
He gasped at the small blaze that started to spread. "A-A-A-Aguamenti!!!" he blurted, dousing the fire out.... and just about everybody else on their table.
Oops.

She watched as Matty demonstrated the correct way of doing it and was just about to attempt it again when Sal started yelling about a fire.
EEEK!!!
She had done it again. Mia was just about to push her chair away from the desk when suddenly she was drenched with water. She sat there for a moment blinking a couple of times, trying to figure out what had happened when she saw Sal standing there with his wand out and realised that he had put the fire out.
Mia slumped down in her chair. No point in telling the Slytherin off for wetting her seeing how it was she that had caused the problem in the first place.
"Er...maybe I should try the other way of carving a rune into the wood."

"Try again Mia. Think of nothing but the rune. Remember what prof said. Picture it. Don't worry you'll get it."
Truebridge stopped near the table and observed for a moment.
"Five points to Slytherin for a fast reaction, dowsing the fire. Five points to Hufflepuff," He nodded at the Hufflepuff boy, Matty "For helping to encourage your classmate." Truebridge stepped closer. "Mia, you're more than welcome to wait to learn the other method, but I think you're more than capable of doing this, it's just a matter of remaining calm and focused. That will come with practice."
Truebridge clearly wasn't at all bothered by the sight of flames. For good reason too, while some things might catch on fire, the rune charms surrounding the room did mean any fire would be sluggish and easily put out before it caught severely enough to do any damage or burn anyone dangerously.

Before she had started working on her piece of wood and like a warning from heaven, Louisa saw a flying wood and then FIRE! She gasped and almost jumped under the table if an older student didn't step in and put it out. She stood still for a moment to take it all in. Okay. That was a bad try from that girl. What if she made the same mistake? Huh? No way. She wasn't taking any chances! Everybody knew wood catches fire like… the best. Ahem. She pointed her wand at the piece of wood, which stood almost in the center of the table now, and focused on it. "Intaglio Ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz ansuz.." Moving the wand around and a few seconds later she heard a sound… like a big saw working on a piece of wood.
What? O__o
Louisa stopped suddenly and stretched out for her wood. "Er…Professor…" The young girl could see through the carvings! Uh Oh. "Was this supposed to happen?" Awkward smile "I mean the shape is almost the same but.."She put one finger into one of the holes.
Truebridge looked up when his attention was called for and went over that way. He eyed the board.
"Just try again. A little less.... eagerly this time, perhaps." Truebridge suggested.

Think about it, if you're having trouble say something, especially with wood that for some reason can't stay on the tables, and flames that spontaneously appear, it's important to be aware of your own safety and use all the provided safety precautions. Then he looked at Truebridge and raised an eyebrow without realising. Well... give the children wood and this is

Focusing (GASP!) on his board of wood again, Jake cast his spell, thinking of protection and shields as he did so, and trying not to say those words out loud.

Yes.

We're not amused either.
Truebridge nodded at Jake.
"Good job." He added quietly as he walked by.

If you're carving a rune, and only thinking about one intent, will it only help with that one aspect?" she paused a moment, trying to string together her idea. "Like, if I'm carving Fehu, and only concentrating on luck, would it still help with achieving goals, and hard work paying off? Or would I have to carve the rune for each intent?"
After she was done taking notes, the young puff made her way the front of the room where she grabbed a pair of safety goggles, and sat them on her face. She headed back to her table, where she rummaged through her bag, and pulled out her own pair of gloves. She placed them on her hands, and looked at the list of Runes, trying to decided which one to try first. Nauthiz looked fairly easy, and yet it would still be useful for the class. She slipped her gloves on, and took her wand and thought about which hand to try first. Taking the wand in her left hand, Em held it against the wood. After a deep breath, the girl mutteredintaglio, nauthiz, nauthiz, nauthiz, nauthiz and thought about the meaning of the rune. She did this untill she had finished carving the symbol. After she finished, Emmaleigh decided to switch hands, and try the Wunjo rune. This time, she gripped the wand tightly in her right hand, and repeated "intaglio, wunjo, wunjo, wunjo, wunjo, wunjo," as she traced the rune's shape on the board, still concentrating on the meaning of the rune.
"It would yes, but less so." Truebridge answered. "You can think about as many meanings as you like when you focus your intent this way, but especially while you're just getting the hang of it, focusing on only one or two meanings will have a much more significant effect." He watched her work for a bit then nodded in approval.

Taking out her wand, Charisa pointed it at her desk, keeping her thoughts steadily focused on her chosen rune, Thurisaz, and its good meanings. Like the purging of the negative, study, and concentration. Yeah, definitely not conflict or hardship.
"Intaglio thurisaz, thurisaz, thurisaz..." Charisa thought hard about the rune and its beneficial uses as she recited the incantation and ran her wand over the part of the surface of the wood where she wanted the rune to appear. Gradually, the marks being scratched in began to look like a rune. Pleased, Charisa continued. "Thurisaz... thursiaziz..." DARN. Her rune stopped growing more rune-like.
"Would you like me to shrink those gloves for you?" Truebridge offered, watching the girl struggle a bit. "It might help you concentrate a bit better if you aren't distracted by the discomfort."

She weaved through the other tables, which were placed, seemingly randomly, around the fascinating room, and took a seat at the other end of the table. She saw that most of the other students had grabbed safety tools already and were practising chants, and suddenly felt clueless. She usually was the top student in her classes, but she had no idea what was going on.

Was this class over yet? She wanted OUT of there.
"Marie." Truebridge didn't raise his voice but he turned his attention fully on the Slytherin girl. "Sit down, begin your work and apologise to Salander if you please." And if you don't? Well.
Well she could try that if she really wanted to.
He walked up to the front of the room.

Adam got up with the help of the teacher. He could handle the pain it just stung slightly.
Then he paid attention to what Professor Truebridge had said.
Nodding his head slowly Adam flicked his wand up and put it close to the wood.
"Italgio...Italgio...Italgio."
There the wood have been carved in now.
Adam squeed inside, he had never been very good at magic or even tried it, so this little session was lifting his spirits.

"You're forgetting the 'In' part." Truebridge commented. "Its 'Intaglio'. And the name of the rune you are carving or it won't be invoked with magic."
But the boy was eager, which was good. And not hollering about his little scratch either. Another good thing.

Truebridge ducked.
"A bit too much passion in that Kenaz perhaps, Kurumi."
...
Really. Couldn't have been that bad.
"Stand up, you're fine." Suck it up. Really. "A scratch like that is easily dealt with." Truebridge did try his best to sound comforting.
He tried.
"Let me take a look."
"Alright Kurumi. Take a seat and try to keep a hold of your piece of wood alright?" Truebridge winked at the Gryffindor.
Seeing as Professor Truebridge had come to check on Adam, Kurumi nodded to the professor and grabbed her piece of wood that now had Kenaz carved into it despite it flying halfway across the room. Settling down at her seat once again, Kurumi set the piece of wood down and stared at it for a few moments before turning to her textbook again to see what rune to try next. Wunjo looked like it was pretty simple and would be useful as well.
OK, less passion. Focus was good, passion was a little too much. Got it.
Kurumi pointed her wand at the piece of wood and repeated the wand movement. "Intaglio wunjo...wunjo...wunjo...wunjo..." she said in a steady rhythm and in a much calmer voice this time. When the saw dust had cleared, Kurumi looked down to see Wunjo carved rather nicely next to her Kenaz rune. No flying wood. No smacking people in the head. No water all over the place.
Mission accomplished.

Waiting until most of the people had gotten their protective gear, since there would be less people to get close to that when she herself got up, the Slytherin was just about to get up and go get a pair herself but, Salander had already done that apparently.
Muttering a 'thank you' to the older Slytherin, Evelyn took a pair of gloves and eye-wear before settling down in her seat, making herself comfortable and sliding on the gloves, all the while keeping an open ear for what Professor Truebridge was saying.
Staring down at the piece of wood in front of her, the teenage girl pulled out her wand and tapped it against her hand, thinking of which rune she should carve into it. Why not her favorite? Thurisaz? However, before she could even begin to think of the incantation, a sudden blur caught her off guard as her gaze snapped up to the moving thing in the air, causing her eyes to widen. What in the world was that!?
Staring at the moving piece, in a moment, it clicked in her mind that it was a wooden board much like her own, except hers wasn't connecting with a Gryffindor's head at the moment. She couldn't help but snort at that actually. Hehe, what!? It was FUNNY!
...wait. Fire. FIRE! FIRE!! Lookit it!
"NOOOO!" she whined rather loudly, watching the flames disappear under the water being conjured from Salander's spell. Alright, so she was upset the beautiful flames disappeared...and she was also upset that now her lap was getting drenched. Stumbling out of her chair, the Slytherin scoffed, glancing down to her wet front...
Before glaring at Salander that is. This...was his fault. He could have totally let the fire be.
It wasn't like it hurt him!

Then, Kurumi got doused in water. Lots of it. Her bangs became plastered to the front of her face covering her eyes and her shoe started making a squishy noise. Did any body have a towel?
Still, instead of getting angry, Kurumi found herself laughing. First class of the year and complete chaos was breaking out. It felt good to be back at Hogwarts.
"Perhaps, I should have carved Ur instead," she laughed picking up her piece of wood. "Seeing as it is a rune that represents water, maybe it could have prevented this." She parted her soaked bangs and looked up at Salander. See, everything could have some educational value.

As he doused the flames out, he could hear someone wail on their table-- Evelyn looked mortified. "I'm putting it out! I'm putting it out see?!?" he said, completely oblivious of the fact that he was getting rid of the flames that had the Slytherin girl all enthralled. When he as finally done he saw the sopping mess that was their group and started to tergeo the water from the table "Err... sorry guys..." he mumbled, grinning at Kurumi's suggestion and then hearing Mia's remark "Honestly I'm just about ready to try the pocket-knife version." Because in Hogwarts, wooden sticks are infinitely more dangerous than metal blades.
And before he knew it, Marie was yelling at him, using him as a towel then shoved him so hard he lost his balance, hit someone and fell backwards. He looked back up at the drippingSlytherin blond. What came over her? She was just quiet and mope-y and dry one minute and now she actually got him on the ground.
He grappled the edge of the table and hauled himself back up. "Sorry..." he mumbled, then added sheepishly "You want me to vacuum you up?" Least he could do.

Truebridge stepped closer. "Mia, you're more than welcome to wait to learn the other method, but I think you're more than capable of doing this, it's just a matter of remaining calm and focused. Truebridge clearly wasn't at all bothered by the sight of flames. For good reason too, while some things might catch on fire, the rune charms surrounding the room did mean any fire would be sluggish and easily put out before it caught severely enough to do any damage or burn anyone dangerously.
Then he turned his head at Professor Truebridge. Oh no! Fire, water, and this corner of the classroom looking like a mess and they arent even halfway done with the lesson. Salander winced, expecting to be told off and made an example of in front of the entire class....
....and get 5 points for Slytherin.
Wait. What?
His mouth still askew when the Professor started to move away "Oh, thank you Mr Truebridge sir." he called out. He looked at the Slytherin girls and the Hufflepuffs and beamed. 5 pts a piece for getting wet.
Yeah thats what crazy is, when its broken you say theres nothing to fix++++++++++++++++++++ +++++++And you pray that everything will be okay, while you're making all the same mistakes
Alice stopped to observe her first finished rune. Hmm it was sort of wibbly and wobbly…in fact it looked much more like...well two wibbly wobbly lines than a Rune. How had she even managed to get lines in wood to look like that? She sighed and decided to try again. Well what else could she do? She decided this time to try Wunjo. She began to carve” Intaglio wunjo, wunjo, wunjo, wunjo” Right, well this time nothing was happening. Hmm. Okay focus Alice thought, you need to focus. “Intaglio wunjo, wunjo, wunjo, wunjo” Alice now mainly focusing on how silly she felt saying the word wunjo over and over. Not good. She shook her head as if to clear it from thought and tried once more “Intanglio, wunjo, wunjo, wunjo, wunjo” She looked and there it was! The beginning of a line! It was only a very small line but it was progress and it was actually a straight line! Alice continued with her carving with a smile on her face. This class was turning out to be rather fun.
Truebridge began walking around the classroom to inspect their progress. Plenty of students were getting the hang of it and he nodded approvingly, offering the occasional 'good work' or 'thats it' as he passed their tables.

Raven nodded to professor, very nice professor --know how to encourage ickle firstie, Raven think.
Raven clear his mind. Concentrating in the rune Isa, then to its meaning to him, its reflection and reinforcement of his magic. He grip his wand firmly, focused on wood, and to the rune, thought of making a great reflection, he cast the spell loudly "Intaglio Isa Isa Isa Isa Isa Isa" then the wand produced blade like light direct hit at the wood, like slicing it, leaving a more visible line, yes, is more likely rune Isa. Raven lightly hurt again but the gloves is intact with him, no visible would, he examine his hand, he saw a redish hand, but yes, it's okay, nothing to worry about.
Raven took on the gloves again, ready to cast again to finish the work. he give a deep breath and say loudly "Intaglio Isa Isa Isa Isa Isa Isa Isa" now he produce the rune Isa on wood visibly, Raven smile, let the professor assess his work. he wish it alright for the professor. "err, Professor, how about it?" Raven ask about his produce cut on the wood. He wish the professor say it okay or nice, because his hand hurt.

Emily looked up as Professor Truebridge adressed the class.... she looked doewn at her handy work and was very impressed with her runes.
Deciding to practive one more time on a spare bit of the wood, Emily put her wand to the wood and traced the shape of the rune as she said the incantation "Intaglio anzus anzus anzus anzus...". Yet again another good carving.
"And what is the other way?"
*Shaking his head a little like a dog he tried to clear away the water from him.Pointing his wand to the group he started to slowly dry everyone off.*
"Try again Mia. Think of nothing but the rune. Remember what prof said. Picture it. Don't worry you'll get it."
"I don't know." She whined. "But anyway has got to be better than me trying to carve runes with my wand." Mia appreciated that Matty was trying to help her but her confidence always took a battering when she almost destroyed things.
Before she could say or do anything, Professor Truebridge was standing in front of them.

She was happy that both Sal and Matty had received points but she still felt like such a tosser and she sank down even further in her chair when the Professor stepped even closer.
He thought she could do it. None of the other Professor's had ever given her any encouragement before. Mia slid back up in her chair and she looked at Professor Truebridge, then to Matthias and then back to the Professor. "Okay." She squeaked out. "I will keep practicing the carving this way."
"Thank you sir."
*Once the professor left Matty pumped a fist in the air then turn to Mia and the Slytherin.*
"Looks like your a Slytherin firefighter. And Mia Prof has faith in you too. Here I'll do one with you-"
*Pointing his wand to the bit of wood he started to say Intaglio wunjo, wunjo, wunjo, wunjo... This one was still faint but stronger then the first.*
Watching the reactions from both Matty and Sal, Mia snorted and then burst out laughing. "It's five points, boys. Anyone would think you were just announced as the next Minister for Magic." She shook her head still chuckling under her breath as she pulled her piece of wood closer.
Right. She could do this. Both Matty and Professor Truebridge thought so. With another sweep of her wand across the wood, Mia once again said the incantation. "Intaglio...Thurisaz...Thurisaz...Thurisaz...Thuri saz...Thuris...oh hey!" She said looking down at her piece of wood. "I think I did it."
Okay so it was really faint and you had to squint to see it but it was there, she was sure of it.
"Hey I'll take any points I can get."
*Looking at it Matty could sort of see a faint outline of the rune. It was really hard to see but the fact that Mia had tried and saw some success was the point. He smiled and nodded.*

Sebastian looked over, finally noticing Sophie sitting next to him. Oh goodness, now he was going to become eve more nervous than he originally was. Ugh! He gave a little wave to Sophie and turned his attention back to Professor Truebridge. He shook a little bit; of fear of embarassing himself and then he opened up the book to Chapter 5 as he was instructed too. Okay, so they were carving into the desk? Oh boy.
He looked over at the other people carving into the desks and took a deep breath in and out. It couldn't be that bad. Bonnie and Sophie could help him, right? Hehh. He read the chapter and shrugged. Okay, so it wasn't that hard.
He walked up and got a pair of gloves with some goggles. He put the goggles upon his face and put on the pair of gloves, taking his seat once again. He grabbed his wand out of his bag and looked through the chapter picking two runes that he wanted to carve. Okay so he would use Laguz for facing your fears, as it was what he was doing right now. As well as carving Dagaz for having a happy outcome or happy life. "Intaglio Laguz laguz laguz laguz laguz laguz." He said, carving the rune into the wood. Cool, it looked pretty good. Now on to Daguz. He mumbled, "Intaglio Daguz daguz daguz daguz daguz daguz." He messed up just a bit, but it still looked like the rune in the book. He was pretty proud of himself right now.
Sebastian finally took notice of her presence next to him. The little wave he did in her direction seemed a bit nervous but she could have imagined it. With a whisper she said to him when he had manged carving in two runes. "Good job!" Sophie then focused her attention back on her own wood. Touching it with her gloved hand she judged it to be cool enough to begin with the next rune. "Intaglio Thurisaz thurisaz thurisaz thurisaz thuuuuuuuuurisaz.""AtchOO!" To sneeze on the last word was never good in any spell casting. Sophie looked down at her piece of wood her mood dropping. The second rune had totally damaged the first rune. A bit sad really Sophie asked Professor Truebridge "Sir, do you think I could get a new piece of practice wood? I sneezed and the result didn't exactly become pretty." The prefect held up her wood to show the professor so that he could see the jumbled mismatch of lines.

As he was done carving his second rune, he heard a 'good job' coming from Sophie and he gave a small smile. Hmm, maybe this could be easy? Seb watched as Sophie was about to carve another rune, but her sneeze had gotten into the words, messing up the rune.
*SNORRRTTT*
Oh goodness. "Sorry." He muttered to Sophie, trying to keep the laughter inside of him. Yeah, he wasn't going to laugh because he knew he could do much much worse. Alright so on to another rune...
The Gryffindor scanned through the runes and picked another one that seemed to benefit his liking. Okay, here was one. Algiz. Hmm, well he guessed he could put it on the wood. What it meant to him was that you are always protected from danger here at Hogwarts. "Intaglio, Algiz, algiz, algiz, algiz." He said pointing his wand at the wood while looking at his book to see if he was carving it correctly. One of the three stem things were a bit slanted to the side, but it looked alright he guessed.
"What statement would that be, Arya?" Truebridge asked as he passed behind her and Sabel.
He walked up to the front of the room.
"Does anyone need any help or have any questions before we move on to the other method?"

He nearly jumped to the ceiling when Truebridge spoke as he passed around behind both him and Arya. Thankfully his carved rune was already such a mess of curvy lines and jagged, rough edges that the streak that went through the center of it made no difference. So there was a balance to be had between how focussed one was and how much attention was paid to the rest of the environment for safety reasons.
Blinking, he glanced back at the Professor and then over at Arya. Her explanation brought another question to mind and he turned his eyes back to Truebridge. "Do Runes have to look like near-exact replicates of the ones in the books or can they be like handwriting? Individual based on the caster while retaining their magical properties? Is the effectiveness of the Rune more based on the intent than the accuracy?"

Emily did as the teacher suggested and kept thinking of the runes meaning.
"Intaglio Thurisaz, thurisaz, thurisaz..."
The rune slowly started to appear on the wood
"Oh, thanks for the advice professor!"
Emily then went for another rune
"Intaglio Daguz, daguz, daguz, daguz..."
Emily suddenly thought of something and raised her hand
"Professor, this may seem a silly question, but can you only carve runes in wood? Or can other things have runes carved into them, like stone?"
She thought she already knew the answer, but just wanted to check.
