Default Transfiguration Lesson II :: Building and Binding

The room is once again set up with the desks around the perimeter and a large opening in the middle. One corner of the room, however, is devoid of chairs and is curtained off. The windows are open just slightly to let some fresh air in, but not enough that anything could slip through, except for maybe some parchment.

Professor Kingsley stands near the board waiting for the students to arrive.

(So sorry about not opening on Friday. Something came up and I was not around this weekend at all).

Lesson Spell Summary

Tacque : transfigures target object (toothpick, twig, worm, string, bobby pin, etc) into a nail or stake

Malleus : allows you to use your wand as a hammer (charm)

Cordage Creatus: transfigures target object (wire, necklace, string, snake, eel, etc) into rope

Picking up a board, he placed it on his desk, before levitating a worm from the bucket. "Tacque," he said softly, turning the worm into a nail. "I'm going to teach you a spell now that utilizes your wand like a hammer. The incantation is malleus and the movement is just as you would tap with a hammer."

Picking up the nail, he held it against the wooden board before intoning, "Malleus," and repeating the motion several times, as if he were hammering the nail. Between his fingers, the metal slid into the wood smoothly, though the wand did not touch it.

"Please take care with this spell. I don't want to send anyone to the hospital with smushed fingers. Gesture lightly as if you were tapping lightly. The force you use with your wand would be like the force of the hammer."

Holstering his wand, he gestured to them. "When you think you have the nail right, come and get a board and see. If you focused too much on appearance but not on structure, your nail will smush when you try to hammer it."

Well she had about 4 nails now, all varying colours of metal. Sarah wasn't entirely sure it should have been that way, but meh, it would do - as long as the poor worms weren't deformed when they were changed back.

Looking up and squinting, she listened to the professor as he explained the next spell. They were moving on already? .....A hammer? Cool. Grinning, Sarah picked up her nails and hit them against the desk, testing to see how hard they were. A small tapping noise could be heard, letting her know they were at least solid. Hopefully that meant she wouldn't be surrounded by a pile of mushed worms at the end of this part of the lesson.

Walking up to the front, she took a board and smiled at Professor Kingsley as she passed him on her way back to the desk. Going over the spell in her head again, Sarah tapped her wand on her hand to get the motion and the right speed for it. Satisfied, she held a nail in place and began. "Malleus!" Tap, tap tappity, tap. The nail slid in, just as they were shown, and a grin spread across her face. It had only taken her seven years to get good at things.

SPOILER!!: Professor #2 Cordage Creatus

Returning to the board, he added a new spell. Cordage Creatus.

"If you all could pause for a moment, you can return to practice in a moment." Pausing to wait for the noise in the room to die down, Professor Kingsley clasped his hands behind his back.

"Hammer and nails is one way to bind things together, but another is rope. If you can transfigure a shoelace or a piece of string into sturdy, thick rope, you can manage any number of things, including creating shelter with nothing more than a blanket and some trees to tie the rope between."

Flicking his wand at the board, a list of items appeared under the incantation. Shoelaces, string, ribbon, wire, vines, snakes, eels

"There are other things, as well. Obviously, living creatures are more difficult."

Pausing, he looked around. "The incantation - Cordage Creatus - is pronounced cor-dahge crey-ah-toos, accompanied by two loose circles with your wand. I will be right back with your <ahem> subjects."

Preston disappeared behind the curtain and rummaged around before returning with a crate.

A crate that slithered.

"When you are ready to try this last spell, come and get a snake. They are defanged and not poisonous at all. You are quite safe."

Rope. Right. Were they going on a camping trip or something? All this talk of nails, rope....blankets? Huh. Either way it was kinda fun. And if her dad ever ran out of nails at home, she'd be hunting in the garden for worms....

Shaking her head, Sarah placed her hammer wand back in her wrist holster, and shoved the wood to one side. Reading the board up front, she said the spell a couple of times, and made the circle motion with her head. Hmmm, she could do that. Yeah.

....Wait, what was that?

The crate was moving. Slithering along. That was... O_______o The man said snakes. Okayy, she could handle that. Snakes were not on her fear list - never handled one however. Gulping hard, Sarah edged her way up to the crate and peered inside. "Okay snakey. This is not going to hurt, I promise you." Crouching down, she slid her hand inside and gripped one around the head, placing her other hand around the tail. "Ewww," she muttered, trying not to let go as it wriggled on her way back to her desk.

Letting go with her right hand, Sarah flicked her wrist to release her wand. The snake was thrashing with it's now free tail, desperate to escape, as if it knew what was coming. Sighing, Sarah held it level with her face, and looked directly into it's eyes. "I know you can't understand me, but please - you will get changed back." Nodding at it, she turned it's head away so she didn't have to look when it transfigured. Making two circles with her wand, she muttered "Cordage Creatus", and breathed a sigh of relief when the snake turned into a limp rope in her hand.

HeadGirlMC | Treddie & Trixiver <3 | Copy Girl | Katie's Ickle Minion | I love YOU more

Hmm.... Trixie must have dozed off completely this lesson because she was totally lost. Her mind had wandered off elsewhere, not that that was an unusual thing for her to do, in fact it happened quite frequently but it wasn't so good when she was a NEWT student now.

"Psst....Sarah" the Slytherin directed over at the Head Girl. "I'm lost what are we supposed to be doing?" she whispered whilst looking down at what she had done.

Ewww Worms. Wait what worms? So THIS was what they were doing? Avoiding mushing worms? How lovely. And they had nails, and a hammer. Oh goodness this could NOT end well. Trixie copied what Sarah was doing, approaching the front of the classroom and grabbing a board. Deeeep breath. The almost seventeen year old adjusted her nail and got it into position. "Malleus" she spoke clearly and with a few taps of the wand the nail broke into the wood, avoiding it splitting.

La laaaaa De Da...

Trixie's mind was REALLY not into her work today. But she caught the word rope and a few other random words throughout the Professors speech. And the other word she had caught was....

SNAAAAKE...

Actually she didn't mind snakes being a "snake" herself. *Wink* So the snakie skipped up to the front and grabbed her own snake to practice with. Woah. She had never held one of these before, it was really cool. She carefully brought it back to her desk and prepared to transfigure it. "Corda....." Corda Whata? How did you pronounce it again. It was a good job she had others around her. "Cordage Creatus" she declared, perhaps not as clearly as other spells she had done before. But she watched thankfully as the Snake turned into a long rope.

Phew!

Worms certainly were wiggly little creatures, weren't they.

Arya soon found all the wiggling and crawling distracting, and transfiguring them actually became more difficult. Though the worms where fully transfigured, they weren't really sturdy. Not good at all for actual use. A few simply turned silver as they continued to wiggle around. It was only when she placed the other worms on the neighboring desk, and used two fingers to hold the worm still that she could actually successfully transfigure the worm.

She hadn't been aware of the professor with the pile of wood boards until he spoke up from her nails. Carefully she pushed aside the two nails, ignoring the wiggling worms on the other desk, and transcribed the new spell after Kingsley preformed it for them. Instead of retrieving her board, she finished transfiguring the other two wiggling worms. She was gonna need the for the nailing process.

Skipping over to the front, she retrieved two boards and placed them on her desk. Repeating the incantation for the new spell quietly as she did. Hm. Holding the nail, she murmured fixate until all the four nails were neatly lined up on the wood.

"Malleus," Her wand repeatedly hammered the first nail, missing on the first few tries and instead hitting the wood. Good spell that fixate, else that would have been her fingers.

She ceased her hammering when the professor spoke again, eyes moving back to him. Her hand automatically moved for her quill and parchment as he spoke of ropes.

They got to work with snakes this time? Sweeet.

Arya skipped to the front of the class and stuck her hand into the crate, allowing one of the snakes to slither up her arm before moving back to her desk to practice the new spell.

"You're all doing excellently," Preston called out to them as he paced the room. The lesson period was drawing to a close, however, so he returned to the board.

"You can stay to practice for a while longer, but I want to assign your homework now, as class is drawing to a close."

He tugged on his ruffled cuffs as his eyes traveled across the room. "Some of what I've taught you so far this term has direct application. But, many of these spells can also be used creatively in any number of situations."

Flicking his wand at the board, the homework appeared.

List 10 different uses of the spells taught so far this term. You must name at least three different spells.

"I want you to share with me creative uses of the spells from this lesson and the lesson before. If I had taught you the spell for turning a rock into a chair, for example, one of the things you could list would be 'to break up for firewood.' That's the sort of thing I'm looking for."

Holstering his wand, he looked at the class. "You may stay and practice, but once you are done, please return your snake/rope and board to the front of the class. I will take care of restoring the creatures to their original form. Don't want you reverting worms that are then partially stuck in the wood."

ooc: I'll leave this class open until later tomorrow so you can continue to play, but if your charrie is ready to leave, they may.

Teehee. Evelyn was still rather excited over the fact that she transfigured something at least ninety percent of the way with only a few tries.

Continuing with hammering the worm/nail into the board, after a moment or so when it seemed it was pretty much in there, the she-snake Slytherin beamed proudly at her work and laid down her wand to the side. See that!? It was practically perfect! Except, with the color problem she had, but it was easily fixable. At least she actually got the nail part of it right.

Woooot!

Half listening to what the professor was saying, and half paying attention to her awesome work right in front of her, Evelyn lifted her board to look at the bottom and to see if the nail went through. Well, just barely. At least it didn’t scratch up her desk.

Cordage…Crea..toos…

Uh huh. Yea, whatever.

Still fascinated with the board and nail, it was only when she heard the unmistakable sounds of slithers did she pause and slowly place it back on her desk. “You defanged a snake?” she asked in disbelief, staring at him as if he were the cause of the extinction of some rare dragon. Jeez, why not just kill the snake!! Poor creatures.

Scrambling over, Evelyn looked down in the box. She should just…take them all away from the evil professor before he could take away anything else from them! But alas, she probably wouldn’t get far, not to mention in a load of trouble. Seeing one that looked like her Tiki that she had awhile back, the Slytherin smiled and picked it up. It was definitely smaller than her snake that she had, but it had the same coloring. So cute!

Tiki Jr. Most definitely!

Making her way back to her desk, she placed the board on the ground near her feet before placing the Gryffindor colored snake on her desk. Hmm, reminded her of Josh. Again. Sigh. Josh.

Blinking after a moment or so, she shook her head to clear her thoughts before picking her wand up once more. Sorry Tiki Jr. You…gotta be turned into a rope! Besides, there was only one Tiki in the world, and this was not him. "Cordage Creatus." With two circles of her wand, the snake actually turned into a rope…

That had the same colors as the snake and hissed. PFFFT!

Dianna was ready to leave any moment but she needed to try this spell.
Taking a deep breathe she pointed her wand to wards the snake who was looking right at her. Ignoring this she muttered, "Cordage Creatus!" and close her eyes.

Surprisingly, the snake turned into a long rope just like that. She quickly reverted it back and returned it to the crate before returning to her seat to fix her belongings.

~~~
After she had all of her belongings back into her bag, Dianna left. "Thank you Professor for the wonderful lesson!" she smiled.
With his metal worms, back to regular worms, Patroclus prepared himself to try again.
With his wand over the worms, he muttered, "Tacque" POP, one of the worms was instantly turned into a nail, however it was only one. So moving that one to the side, Patroclus tried again, "Tacque!"
Third time was the charm, before his eyes the squirming worms turned to little metal spikes!
Grinning over his success, Patroclus paid very closer attention to the next section of the lesson. He could not help but think that his knowedge would have been great with the muggle studies assignment last year.
Quickly scribbling the new spell and movement into his notebook, Patroclus swapped his quill for his wand, and prepared to get hammered!'
"Malleus. Malleus. Malleus." Patroclus repeated over and over, trying to get the words to feel comfortable in his mouth. Taking one of his worm-nails in his fingers Patroclus raised his wand, and brought it down at the same time saying "Malleus"
And much to the boy's delight it worked! First go and everything!
Taking the Professor suggestion, Patroclus fixed four more nails into the upright position, and "Malleus, Malleus, Malleus, Malleus!" the board infront of him was now riddled with nails!
OK. Now the lesson had gotten a little harder.
Patroclus was not at all scared of Snakes, he had three of them as close friends......get it??
But for some reason transfiguring them into ropes, had him slightly concerned that the snakes would not appreciate the attention.
Moving to the front of the room, Patroclus selected a snake and returned to his desk, "Sorry about this bud," he whispered. "Cordage Creatus" speaking the spell drawed two loose circles in the air with his wand, and was pleased to see that the snake did not mind having a stick waved at it.
Confident that he was not going to be bitten, Patroclus focused on the snake and drew two circles in the air, and incanted, "Cordage Creatus"
The snake gave a shiver and then was replaced by a coil of rope!
Patroclus the snake charmer!
Leaning against the desk, Preston watched the students finish up their work. Drumming his fingers against he sleeve, he nodded at those who returned their materials. "Thank you."
As they came, he restored the worms and snakes and tucked them back into their containers. "Those of you worried about the snakes, their fangs will be stored. It was just a safety precaution for class. Wrap up your work and return your materials."
He let his eyes wander around the room, watching everyone's progress.
After taking up a snake and then failing for the tenth time to get the Cordage Creatus spell right (half a snake and half a string was not a suitable way of getting the spell correct) the boy decided to give up, mainly because he didn't want to see the snake anymore, and because it was already time to leave.
No problem, he'll practice it soon, very soon. Like..on Transfiguration Practice Room? Yup. There.
Treyen gathered all his things and returned the snake. Ha. Too bad he didn't get to transfigure it entirely. If only he'd kept his eyes closed he'd done it in record time, probably.
"Thanks for the lesson, Professor!" he said, while exiting the classroom. It had been a great lesson, he'd learned how to get a hammer when no one's around.
It's actually practically two spells simultaneously as you need to conjure nails and direct them, and far too difficult for a mixed age class. Plus, the hammering charm is useful if you need to drive tent stakes into the ground or other things that are more permanent than conjured nails."
He paused. "If you're interested in that spell, however, come by the practice room after class."
----
"As for the rest of you," he said, returning his attention to the class, "I want to see you hammering your nails in before we can get to the last spell."
Salander nodded his head at the Professor. He was quite curious how the spell for that would go, not to mention the multiple benefits of actually knowing a spell like that. "I'll be stopping by the practice room Professor thanks!"
Returning to the board, he added a new spell. Cordage Creatus.
"If you all could pause for a moment, you can return to practice in a moment." Pausing to wait for the noise in the room to die down, Professor Kingsley clasped his hands behind his back.
"Hammer and nails is one way to bind things together, but another is rope. If you can transfigure a shoelace or a piece of string into sturdy, thick rope, you can manage any number of things, including creating shelter with nothing more than a blanket and some trees to tie the rope between."
Flicking his wand at the board, a list of items appeared under the incantation. Shoelaces, string, ribbon, wire, vines, snakes, eels
"There are other things, as well. Obviously, living creatures are more difficult."
Pausing, he looked around. "The incantation - Cordage Creatus - is pronounced cor-dahge crey-ah-toos, accompanied by two loose circles with your wand. I will be right back with your <ahem> subjects."
Preston disappeared behind the curtain and rummaged around before returning with a crate.
A crate that slithered.
"When you are ready to try this last spell, come and get a snake. They are defanged and not poisonous at all. You are quite safe."
He was intent on transforming a better nail out of the worms when he looked up and watched the Professor demonstrate how to transform items for ropes. Then his attention was taken by the crate with the familiar sound of hissing. And he was pretty sure this time it wasnt coming from Lexi. Oh boy... he winced, trying not to make it appear that he was bothered by the critters. He finally got the nerve to come near the crate when the Professor said they were not poisonous and were defanged. Ouch for the snake, but this Snake has had his fill of being a teether to things 10x smaller than him, and isnt about to complain how things are prepped in their favor. He stuck his hand in and grabbed a snake by the base of its head, the serpent's body coiling immediately around his arm. Defanged or not, the serpent can still work those muscles "Cordage Creatus!" the lad cast out, almost knocking the serpent's head with his wand. Most of it transformed into rope, but the tail end still remained wriggling, and it still kept its serpentine texture. He let it go and dropped it onto his desk. He was happy with that
"You can stay to practice for a while longer, but I want to assign your homework now, as class is drawing to a close."
He tugged on his ruffled cuffs as his eyes traveled across the room. "Some of what I've taught you so far this term has direct application. But, many of these spells can also be used creatively in any number of situations."
Flicking his wand at the board, the homework appeared.
List 10 different uses of the spells taught so far this term. You must name at least three different spells.
"I want you to share with me creative uses of the spells from this lesson and the lesson before. If I had taught you the spell for turning a rock into a chair, for example, one of the things you could list would be 'to break up for firewood.' That's the sort of thing I'm looking for."
Holstering his wand, he looked at the class. "You may stay and practice, but once you are done, please return your snake/rope and board to the front of the class. I will take care of restoring the creatures to their original form. Don't want you reverting worms that are then partially stuck in the wood."
ooc: I'll leave this class open until later tomorrow so you can continue to play, but if your charrie is ready to leave, they may.
Ok time to go. He brought his pristine board and his mostly-rope, partially left-over snake tail and one half of his broken rusty nail back to the front of the class. "Thanks for the lesson Professor! I'll be stopping by the practice room soon." he nodded politely and left the room.
The snake had proven more distraction than the worms had, and she found it incredibly difficult to transfigure the creature. More because she was more fascinated with the snake itself than turning it into a rope. Though she already knew that the spells would prove useful to her when she was of age. All of them would be of great use when she goes camping.
But aww.....the lesson was ending. Arya lingered behind a little bit longer until the professor had given last call. Snake wrapped around her hand, she placed the creature back into the crate it had come from.
"Awesome lesson professor," she said by way of bidding farewell to the man with a smile. Grabbing her belonging, Arya skipped out of the classroom.
With several flicks of his wand, and numerous mutterings of the spell "Reverto," Patroclus was once again faced with the squirming worms and the toothless snake.
Scooping up his items, Patroclus smiled as he returned them to the Professor, "Thanks for a great lesson sir, it was a hammer of a good time!"
What? that didn't even make sense!
Smiling weakily again the boy headed for the door!
Amy walked up to the front and retreived a snake and set it on the desk "Cordage Creatus!" the slithering little snake was now a rope all curled up on the desk it was pretty except that in some spots it had snake skin instead of rope. "reverto!" she changed it back into a snake
"Thank you all, for your hard work," he said as they exited.
Once the room was clear of students, he gathered the worms and snakes and set off to tend to the creatures.
