Transfiguration Lesson I, Part Two: FIRE! [On the Grounds]
A sizable section of the grounds, far away from trees, and shrubs and most things flammable, has been designated for the next part of class.
Professor Kingsley is standing there, directing you all to gather near a blue line glowing in the snow.
"Now that we're all here, I want you to spread out. The only things at risk of catching here are yourselves, but if you are careful, that won't happen. You may pair up if you like. Use the focalia spell to conjure your wood and then, to test your wood, try to light it with incendio."
He paused, turning to the younger students. "Don't be afraid to ask for help, either from me or another student. And don't worry if all you can manage is a stick or two at a time that doesn't burn. It takes practice."
Pausing, he looked over everyone. "Safety first, please, and remember that if the fire seems a bit much, aguamenti is your friend."

Jenny gulped. Now THAT was the part she was afraid of...Jenny couldn't be sure how to set her pile of wood on fire without accidentally burning anything else on the way. Most of all, she completely forgot (or didn't know at all, maybe) what the wand movement was.
Jenny pointed her wand at the pile of wood and just did small random wave movements. "Incen...dio?" A tiny flame barely appeared on the wood and vanished before she could even blink. Jenny sighed. She looked around to see if there was anyone she could talk to.
Dianna watched as the others tried the spell. She knew she had to try it too so breathing a deep breathe she held her wand and muttered, "Focalia.".
Concentrating hard Dianna saw a piece of wood appear until finally she was sure that it was real and not just her imagination.
Even though there was a Professor with them, she did not trust her friend with fire. Perhaps they could make a compromise of some sort. Evelyn will stay away from fire and Destiny will stay away from chocolate..
..NAH!
Shaking that CA-RAZY idea from her head, Destiny pulled out her wand before glancing at Evelyn one last time. She was still watching her..even if her eyes weren't on her. "Focalia!" she said, pronouncing the incantation loud and clear, then making the snazzy X movement with her wand. Pssssh. Easy stuff, she thought as she noticed the board sitting in front of her. Sure the board was VERY thin, and had a few holes here and there, but that did not make her any less awesome.
Arms raised above her head in triumph, she waved them around to get Professor Ruffle's attention. "Can I karate chop this thing in half!?"
She'd get to the fire part later.
"No you may not," Preston called out to her. "Practice getting the spell right and then the fire. This is not the place for shenanigans."
Preston looked at her pointedly before checking on the rest.

She took one glance at the spell and repeated it many times in her head before. "focalia." And moved the wand in an 'X' move with a big picture of firewood in her head.
Tadaaaa!
A pile of ragged pieces of woods laid in front of her on the ground. Blink. She stepped closer and knelt down to stare at the… things she just conjured. Hmm.. those were 'woody' enough to be firewood right? With one slightly shaking finger she poked the thing. Aye. It was wood, phew! They were not wet or rotten, just er.. little things that could be lit, hopefully.
One step back and cough cough, "Inci—what?" She re-glanced at the paper. "Oh yeah.. Incendio." She pointed at the piled small pieces of wood.
A tiiiiiny little flame was lit and quickly faded out. The little girl stomped her foot on the ground causing the snow underneath to swallow it whole so she fell on her butt.
Grrr. She tossed the parchment and laid the wand on top of it and started freeing her foot from the ground mumbling "stupid little fire! And wand" With an evil glance at the stick lying there innocently. Few seconds had passed before Louisa was on her feet again and giving the pile another go. "INCENDIO!" Shouting would do the trick then. HEH!
BANG!
An orange-yellowish flame was lit and started to grow bigger eating the ragged pieces of wood quicker than it was supposed to which led to a two-minute-warmth and then nothing was there except for coaled stuff. Black awful smelling stuff to be accurate, which made the girl coughing and "Bl—ood--y he--ll!"ing at the same time.
Flicking his wand quickly at the mess, Preston vanished the smokey wood and embers. "Are you alright? Try not to put so much anger or force into it and it won't be as dramatic."

"A little more confidence and you should be fine," he called. He didn't necessary think doing one-on-one and not watching the rest was the safest idea. "An older student may be able to help you and if not, we can chat about it after class."

Her beanie pulled low on her forehead, Ivory repeated the incantation in a little musical litany as she stepped a little ways away from the other students as instructed. Didn't want anybody's newly conjured blanket to catch on fire now did she.
Tying the edges of her own said blanket around her neck just for additional warmth over her cloak, she found a good little spot and brought up her wand, the skin contact making the little regular blue flame flicker happily at its tip. It was a shame that the small core inspired flame didn't create any form of warmth. Staring woefully at it, she turned her attention to the spot in front of her.
The empty spot. Well the soon to be not so empty spot because it would be filled with a nice bundle of logs, right? Right?
The was the idea anyway.
Alright concentrate. Thinking about the incantation, she repeated it aloud again. Glad that all the repetition on the way over had resulted in the right pronunciation. Visualization though that was another matter.
Burrowing her brow in thought, she tried to think of fire wood. Camp fire wood. Dry camp fire wood. Really dry wood.
Wand moving in an X pattern, Ivory tried the spell for the first time. "Focalia." Staring down the resulting still empty space, she centered her stance and tried again this time concentrating on the wood winking into existence. "Focalia." Hmm well maybe winking into existence wasn't the best analogy. Maybe thinking about it in the form of conjuration. As in not to concentrate on where it came from but more on it being there. One second empty space the next occupied by fire wood.
Keeping this concept in her mind, she took a deep breath and tried again. "Focalia." Not more than a second later, a tiny bundle of three miniature logs appeared. Three very brittle logs. Kicking them softly with the toe of her boot she watched the wood break off easily.
Blowing out a sigh, she flicked her wand. Not bothering to light those logs on fire, she instead cast Evanesco. No point in making a fire on wood that was disintegrating. It seemed there was such a thing as too dry.
she kept her green scarf wrapped snuggly around her neck she raised her wand and made the "x" in the air "Focalia!" She looked down at the sad little pile of twigs on the ground *sigh* that wasn't right lets try again "evanesco" the tiny twigs vanished from their spot at least she'd got that spell right. She smiled, alright now here we go "Focalia!" she said as she made the movement in the air. A nice bundle of fire wood appeared at her feet.Yay! alright now to light it. "incendio!" an itty bitty spark flew out of her wand and went out before it even touched the wood. oh well she'd try again

"Okay." Jenny looked back at her pile of wood. Most of the people she knew were first years, so that wouldn't be much help; she couldn't even ask Kurumi for help if it turned out that Kurumi had trouble with fire too. So she did the best thing she could do - watch everyone else.
Jenny noticed someone far away showing another person (wait...she looks familiar) teaching the wand movement of the spell, or at least, that's what it looked like to Jenny. Quickly turning back to her pile of wood, Jenny tried to copy what she saw as much as she could; the pair in question was too far away and she didn't want to look like she was eavesdropping or something.
Jenny pointed her wand once again. "Incendio!" Jenny said with a bit more confidence this time. A slightly bigger flame appeared on the pile of wood, burning brightly in the cold. That wasn't so bad, right?
|Who's On First? | Challenge Accepted.| | :Ink For Blood: | Team SUITS!|
Ari had certainly done this before. Although she knew that nearly none of the teachers trusted a blind girl with fire, she was glad that she had the chance to prove that she was a competant witch. Turning her head from side to side, she determined that she was a safe distance away, and knew that accidents always happened.
She had done this before, and, as her spells usually required, without the visual image in her head, she had to remember the texture and smell of dry wood. Pulling out her wand, and pressing her dark glasses closer to her eyes, she made the X motion smoothly and uttered "Focalia". She waited a moment, before extending a hand. She felt three reasonably-sized pieces of wood--dry wood. So far, so good.
Remembering exactly where the wood was--Ari was quite good at remembering things--she took one step back, lightly jerked her wand up, then down twice, and said "Incendio". After maybe three seconds, she heard the quiet crackle of the wood, which grew louder after a few moments. She smiled to herself and slowly walked around the fire, feeling for any places where the flame should not have spread. But nothing felt out of place.
Preston watched the girl manage her own problem before it got out of hand. "Do you need some assistance? Perhaps we should talk about what went wrong?"
------
"Keep practicing," he called out to the students. "You are doing quite well. Remember, conjuring the fire is a way to see how well you cast the spell for the wood. Damp or fresh wood won't burn, but correctly conjured dry wood will."
"I'm so sorry. Professor. I didn't know what happened. I think I'm imagining the wrong fire in my mind." Freya smiled apologetically. She's not so sure what to do next. She want to try again but what happened if the fire she created this time much bigger and she couldn't cast the Aguamenti in time? An assistance?Yeah that was a good idea but who? Most of her friends were first year. She looked at Fee to ask her help but she seems had a problem creating the fire too.

Boooo!
Destiny should've known Professor Kingsley wouldn't let her do anything fun. She might have gave him a little glare before nodding her head and turning her attention back to the board in front of her.
Pffft.
What kind of fire would she create with that thing? It had holes and the fire would just seep through. If she chopped it in half, she could have placed one on top of the other and no fire would seep. Whatever, she knew the spell now, she could practice her karate in the dorm. Ha! Tossing the holey board to the side, she once again moved her wand in the X motion, "Focalia." she said, and once again sitting before her was a thin piece of wood. The only difference this time was no holes.
Picking the board up, she examined it for a second to make sure it wasn't wet, and when she knew for certain it wasn't, she placed it back on the ground. Must not karate chop! It was a huge urge to resist, but she managed and with a quick glance towards Evelyn, Destiny pointed her wand at the board. "Incendio!"
Mwaha! She had fire.
Where was Mia? She'd do good in this lesson. Hehe.

"It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not."
Alice was excited to try this spell. She had read about it, and to her being able to produce elements was just awesome.
Alice closed her eyes and pictured a pile of logs, much like the ones that were found in her own fireplace at home.
"Alright, here goes nothing," Alice said, pulling her wand out of her holster. "Focalia!" Alice said. She smiled brightly as the wood appeared before her.
Whew, that seemed much easier than the scarf for some reason. Now to try and light it...
Alice pictured the logs on fire, more for her own mental reference rather than her needing it for the spell to work. After a deep breath she said, "Incendio!"
A small flame appeared in the middle of the logs, spreading a little bit before going out completely. Hmm...that didn't go quite as planned.

And keep up the good work she did. Sorta. She had conjured more twigs, but each new conjuration was better than the previous. It was only on her third try that she finally conjured a log. Not a huge one, but it was big enough to keep her warm.
A small smile flicked across her face as she gently tugged at the edge of her old beanie. "Evanesco." Arya quickly vanished her twigs and log, watching the space in front of her become devoid of wood again.
She already knew the fire part, and wanted to work on the wood part first. Making an 'x' motion with her wand she said, "Focalia." This time a three smallish logs sat in front of her.
Another flick and they were vanished as well, clearing space so she could continue conjuring.

Flicking his wand quickly at the mess, Preston vanished the smokey wood and embers. "Are you alright? Try not to put so much anger or force into it and it won't be as dramatic."
The girl nodded her head at the Professor. Yeah she was all right, although being able to light a fire would be better. She was impressed by the way he just flick his wand and the work is done easily and messy things disappear. She'd reach that once she became like third year… right?
Right.
Louisa took one deep breath to release the too excitement (i.e. anger) and "Fo—calia" With a sweeeet false smile. Well, nothing happened because the 'X' motion was absent. Eyes rolled. "Fine.." She mumbled, "Focalia!" With the movement a nice pile of firewood was laid in front of her.
Looking closely, she knew they were good enough… at last. "I did it! I did it!" She clapped and jumped once before containing the excitement. Oooh! Now that was something to tell Enya about. Sparing the previous attempts of course
Now the fire part! She stood there concentrating hard on the pile and piercing it with her LASER eyes. "Incendio." Loud and clear… anger-free of course. The task was complete now because a nice decent flame was lit and grew bigger slowly to form a nice fire. Nice enough for an eleven years old student anyway. Louisa smiled widely at her masterpiece and looked up at the Professor swinging her body amusingly. Yeah, this class was definitely FUN! ^__^
Kurumi repeated the words over and over in her head and imagined a nice modest sized pile of wood in front of her. OK, image perfected - just like the older student had explained to her - now it was time to try the wand movement and incantation to make the image in her head appear in front of her. "Focalia," she said with confidence as a small pile of wood appeared in front of her. Sure, none of them were logs...but it was a starter right? She could work on making them pretty and not like they had just gone through a wood chipper later.
She looked over at Jenny standing standing next to her with her small flames dancing on her wood. "Aw....they are so cute," she said kneeling down to get a better look at the little flames. Kurumi stood back up and decided she best try and light her wood. She picked up piece. It felt solid enough...she waved her wand and said, "Incendio," only to find that sparks flew out of her wand, showering her wood, but by no means creating anything that looked like fire. She scooted closer to Jenny. Maybe they should be working together on this one too?

Now time to try out the wood. Dianna fixed the wood so that it was directly in front of her before muttering, "Incendio.".
Surprisingly nothing happened. Maybe it was because she wasn't sure if it would work.
Trying a bit harder and with more effort and concentration, Dianna pointed her wand at the piece of wood.
"Incendio!".
Success! Wood=Burning. Dianna watched as the fire grew bigger. Good enough to make some s'mores.

"Aguamenti!" The baseball-sized flame vanished. There was really no point in using that spell since Jenny planned to get rid of the wood as well, but oh well. Better safe than sorry.
"Evanesco!" Jenny pointed her wand again and her pile of wood vanished. She then turned over to Kurumi, who had just complimented her tiny yet useless flames! Right now, Kurumi DID look like she was struggling to make a fire...
"Maybe you should say it a bit louder?" Jenny suggested to Kurumi as she tried to picture another pile of wood in her head. Thick, dry, sturdy pieces of brown wood. She pointed to the clearing in front of her. "Focalia!" Slightly bigger pieces of wood appeared, but the good thing was that they were perfectly dry and sturdy. Yay!
Hmmm. Vanishing the wood once more, Raiden considered the empty space before him. Wand tapped absently on the ground, conjuring nothing as he thought.
He knew intent could affect the amount, but... could he vary the type? Maybe by just focusing on that?
He flicked his wand, silently casting and tracing the X pattern. Instead of the small logs conjured previous, a handful of cherry logs appeared this time.
They lit easily, and didn't throw off as much smoke as the previous attempts.

Kurumi laughed. She hadn't really pictured actually fire in her head, but instead had thought about sparklers she had played with back in Japan. Jenny may have a point...maybe she should try yelling the spell this time? She looked back down at her humble pile of wood and pointed her wand. "Louder...got it," she winked. Incendio! she yelled probably much more louder than was necessary. Jenny had told her to try saying it louder...Flames burst out of her wand and her wood quickly caught fire. The flames were a little too large and nearly singed her robes.
Ooops....
"Aguamenti! Aguamenti!" she squeaked as water came out of her wand and drenched her pillar of fire until it was no more. She still had her eyebrows, right?
"Maybe...I said that too loud?"

"Maybe you did." Jenny blinked. She didn't get what she meant by "louder" to Kurumi. "I meant maybe you should sound more confident in yourself or something like that...?" Yep, she took the Professor's advice into consideration. Come to think of it, she needed to follow that advice herself too.
Hm...now how to make the right amount of fire. Even though she saw that one guy showing how to do the wand movement, he was too far away and she couldn't even figure out what it looked like anyway. So much for that plan.
"Do you know what the wand movement is for Incendio?" Jenny asked Kurumi, but she had a strong feeling Kurumi didn't know. After all, Kurumi just almost burned herself last time.

-blink blink-
Kurumi blushed and quickly cast the proper spell to make her wood chip remains vanish.
"Unfortunately, no," she blushed as she conjured up another pile of wood. This time, she produced one big log. Much better than wood chips. She looked around to see if there was anyone nearby. She saw the older Slytherin boy she had given cookies to after the second task. He was smart and brilliant. Maybe he could help the two of them?
"Um....excuse me...Mr. Raiden?" Kurumi asked shyly running her fingers through her pony tail. "D-d-d-do you mind helping my friend and me?"

Stretching his fingers over the flames, in a vague attempt to measure how much heat was being thrown off, he very nearly missed Kurumi's sudden burst of flames. Eyes widening, he tightened his grip on his wand, but she had quickly handled it by herself. Relaxing, he had gone back to what he was doing, though his attention was now split between his own work and their work a short ways away.
Looking up as the little girl approached, he listened to her, then glanced back over toward where she'd been practising with another student.
Mister... Raiden?
Heh. Fighting back a grin at that, he nodded before vanishing his own work. Didn't want to leave it here, and lit. Who knew which student would trip over it or something else. Pushing himself up from the ground, he brushed his hands off and nodded, stepping around her to move closer to where she and her friend had been working.
"What did you need help with?" Pause. "And you don't have to call me 'mister', you know..."
He was only eighteen, so not really old enough for that in his own mind. When professors said it... it was different, and they used his last name instead too soooo...

Yeah. Mr. Raiden just sounded odd.
"S-s-s-sorry," she blushed fiddling with her fingers. "My mother always told me to call people that to show respect..."
She turned back to her single big log - still better than wood chips - but was a little afraid to try and cast the fire making spell again. What if she actually singed her eyebrows off this time?!
"Um...well...Jenny and I are having a problem with the Incendio incantation..." that much was probably obvious to him seeing as she had just made a pillar of fire and neither of them had managed to keep a flame for more than 10 seconds. "Is...is there a special wand movement...or something...?"
Kurumi began running her fingers through her hair as she looked shyly back and forth between Raiden and her log.

Kurumi began running her fingers through her hair as she looked shyly back and forth between Raiden and her log.
Jenny looked over Kurumi's shoulder as Kurumi began talking to the older Slytherin student nearby. Hm...he looks cute. NO! JENNY! DON'T THINK LIKE THAT! What would your father say??!!
"Yep, we definitely need help here!" Jenny said as Kurumi asked Raiden...was that his name...to help them.
"I'm Jenny, nice to meet you, by the way." Well, it would be awkward if she didn't send out a proper introduction, right?
"Your mum... she's Japanese isn't she." He wondered if that was something all Japanese parents had in common. His father had always told him that Mister and Miss and Lady and Sir were respectful terms. He grinned. "Don't apologise. I used to do that when I was younger too... I called my best friend 'Miss Daphne Hopton' for a while."
And there had been 'Miss Healer Intern Lady Trelawney' and 'Miss Evolette McKenna' and Merlin knew how many more. It had been a habit hard-broken.
Ahhh. The incendio spell. Kneeling down, he touched the log Kurumi had conjured and looked at her friend. Jenny.
"Nice to meet you Jenny. I'm Raiden Kururugi." He withdrew his fingers from the log and conjured a few of his own without comment. "Incendio's rather easy actually, once you've gotten the hang of it..."
He looked from one girl to the other, and gave his wand a gentle, circular flick before pointing at the logs and muttering the incantation.
The flames burst forth from where his wand had been pointed.
"It's more about intent than loudness." He repeated the small circle and flick, and the flames doubled. "As long as you're focusing on it and you say the spell correctly, you should be able to do it..."
He flicked his wand again and doused a bit of the flames, to keep the small fire manageable.
"Don't get frustrated if you can't get it right away, either. Some spells take time to learn, and nobody gets it right on the first try. If you get upset though, it doesn't make it any easier to cast."

And there had been 'Miss Healer Intern Lady Trelawney' and 'Miss Evolette McKenna' and Merlin knew how many more. It had been a habit hard-broken.

Actually made it harder in most cases.
"My mother is," Kurumi flushed. A very traditional one at that. Kurumi smiled at the older boy with her violet eyes. He kind of reminded her of her oldest brother. She looked at Jenny and saw her blushing and looking like she had just seen the most delicious cookie in the world.
"Hello....earth to Jenny..." Kurumi whispered jabbing her in the side gently with her elbow.
Kurumi then watched as Raiden conjured some fire flames on her log. She flushed at his comment about loudness...had he heard her scream at her pile of wood chips earlier? Her hands went to her cheeks to hide the redness.
"Intent...concentration...focus..." Kurumi repeated the words several more times in her head before copying his wand movement and whispering, "Incendio" and pointing her wand at the log...only a little too far right. A small fire appeared on the ground and burned brightly. "Uh...is there a way to move the fire from there to the log..." she asked in a panicked voice.
