Transfiguration Lesson I, Part Two: FIRE! [On the Grounds] A sizable section of the grounds, far away from trees, and shrubs and most things flammable, has been designated for the next part of class. Professor Kingsley is standing there, directing you all to gather near a blue line glowing in the snow. "Now that we're all here, I want you to spread out. The only things at risk of catching here are yourselves, but if you are careful, that won't happen. You may pair up if you like. Use the focalia spell to conjure your wood and then, to test your wood, try to light it with incendio." He paused, turning to the younger students. "Don't be afraid to ask for help, either from me or another student. And don't worry if all you can manage is a stick or two at a time that doesn't burn. It takes practice." Pausing, he looked over everyone. "Safety first, please, and remember that if the fire seems a bit much, aguamenti is your friend." |
Oh, few. No maze just making fires. "Are we going to roast marshmallows?" Kurumi asked innocently as she cleared an area around her to start her fire. Maybe they were going to have a BBQ? |
Adelyn was all bundled up and just sat down. SHe peeked around and said nothing whatsoever. |
Conjuring their own wood. That had to be useful, eventually, no? And that way you didn't have to set on fire the nice trees around you, we all know they can walk and kill you if you do. Wand out, Treyen was going to conjure up the wood...when...marshmallows? Hey, they did that once, didn't they? Like, at that Camp Out, didn't they? All he could remember was cupcake girl, and the sleeping bag, and the fact that Prefect Cedric offered to shared one. Odd. Really odd. Now he couldn't concentrate, he sort of wanted marshmallows. |
Arya kept far, far, faaaaaaar away from the other students. Especially the younger ones. She had been ignited once, she did not need to relive that experience. Tugging gently on her yellow beanie with one hand, wand twirling in the other, she stared at the glowy blue line. Concentrate. Focusssssss. Yea, that was kinda hard to do with all the thoughts that suddenly flooded her mind. Being on the grounds tended to do that to her. Currently she was wondering how fast a snowman would melt if incendio was used on it. Hmm. What was the incantation again? |
As much as Raiden had been planning to keep himself away from other students for this... on the way down, he'd suddenly remembered that, as a prefect, it was kinda his job to be near the kids. Especially the younger ones, when they were lighting things on fire. Who knew which would be the first student to accidentally ignite him- or herself. So he found himself in a spot close enough to a cluster of students to put out fires should the need arise, yet far away enough that he could work by himself and not 'accidentally' get hit by anything from them. He'd help if needed, of course, but for now... the young man settled down on the ground and went about his own work. Focalia. That was it, right? Right. Muttering the spell, he followed the wand movements given to them, and was not surprised when a small amount of firewood appeared. With an absent flick of his wand, it ignited, and the prefect half-grinned. Now to figure out limits. Heh. |
Simon joined the rest of the classout on the grounds, seriously wondering why they were out in the middle of winter for a class. Listening to the professor, he moved to an area away from other students, his wand out to prepare for what to do. At least we'll be warm, he mused to himself thinking of the wood they were to conjure and a fire. Focusing on the image of wood, he crouched down and aimed his wand a bit. "Focalia!" he cast as he focused, the wood slowly appearing as it was conjured. |
Preston watched some of the students sit in the snow and raised an eyebrow. And then another mention marshmellows... And a few just look aimless. "Time to practice. Remember, the incantation is focalia to conjure the wood. It's a simple 'x' movement in the air. Everyone up and give it a go. And no, there are no marshmellows. No food is permitted in my lessons." Standing back to survey the entire group -- easier to see trouble -- he called out to those who had been practicing already. "Well done, Mister Kururugi. Mister Bennett, try to light the wood, now." He paused, looking to the older students. "Those over fifth year will likely have an easier time. Put out your fire and use evanesco to vanish the wood and try again, varying the quantity of wood and the intensity of the fire. Those under fifth year, conjuration is one of the harder disciplines, so focus on creating the wood." |
Professor Kingsley knocked some sense into him, he forgot about the marshmallows already. Perfect! However, his face fell. 'Conjuration is one of the harder disciplines'. Greeeeat. He'll be here until tomorrow night. Sigh. That wasn't going to stop little Lockhart from trying, though, all he needed to do was focus. Focus. Yeah, that. Sooooo, focusing, the boy nodded at his wand and made the X, haha, that was a fun movement, "Focalia" he said, and then he blinked, blinked, blinked...there was only a little twig on the ground. He frowned. There was little he could do with one twig, chances are the fire will extinguish as soon as it hit the twig...because, you know, it was really little. "Evanesco" he said, all annoyed, and the twig disappear. It was rather incredible to see how he managed to do some spells oh-so-awesomely and some were a complete failure. He'll try again. |
Keeping her poka dot green and white blanket wrapped around herself, completely wishing that it was Josh instead of a blanket, the Slytherin finally sat herself down away from the others and looked around. And thank Merlin that Mr. Ruffles reminded them what the incantation was and the wand movement, because she soooo was not paying attention in class. Scooting her bag away from herself, she finally noticed the blue line thingy that was near them. Meh? What was that? Not that she really cared what it was. Probably some barrier thing so they all didn't go crazy and ran the wood up to the castle to burn it down. Hehe. Burning down the castle. Now THAT was impossible. Or was it? "Focalia," she said, not muttering, but speaking clearly and confidently as she made the X wand movement in the air in front of herself. What appeared, was not really what she was expecting since the professor made a whole bundle of wood appear with his spell...but she supposed two little wood log pieces was good enough. Just do that spell a few times and she'd have a bundle of wood! Mhhmmm! "Professor!" she called out, waving him over. "Can i light it?" PLEASE!?!?! She had to...make sure they were dry and all. You know. Hehe. |
Quote:
Aiming her wand at a piece of wood she made an x movement in the air. "Focalia!" Seeing the wood was conjured now she happy sighed. Sweet succes. |
Conjure the wood with an x and a don't forget focalia. Fo-fo-fo-cal-cal-liaaa! Fletcher had this. He totally made up a rhyme for the spell and everything. Wrapping his blanket about his neck like a large scarf!cape, Fletcher flicked out his wand from its holster and closed his eyes. He was discovering that this helped. The boy took a breath and imagined a nice, medium-sized pile of... some wood. He didn't know what type of wood, specifically, but it was dry and old and chopped into very even pieces. Kinda looked like Professor Saylen's stash of firewood outside her hut. *Snickerrrrr* But now that he had a good mental image, anyway, Fletch made the x-shape in the air and silently commanded, "Focalia!" There it was, the pile of wood just as he'd imagined it. The color was a bit different from his mental image but wood was like snowflakes. Probably. No two pieces are exactly alike. "Incendio!" Fletcher happily lit the wood and shuffled closer to it for a spot of warmth. Shame Kingsley was such a stickler for that no-food rule. He had a chocolate frog in his pocket he was dying to set free.... and uh, wasn't there a way to transfigure or charm food and make duplicates? Like enough for the whole class?? |

His eyes widened slightly, Feenella had gotten conjured wood on her first try. Sigh. This certainly put some pressure on him, even if no one was pushing him to do this. The boy noticed Arya not too far away, and she wasn't giving the spell a chance, she had to conjure up wood before...the...fire...oh. Lafay. But Arya will be good with the lesson, wouldn't she? No one was getting on fire, anyway. Back to the spell. This time he closed his eyes, and pictured a bunch of logs, wood will make an appearance my friend, because he had to get the spell right. "Focalia" he said, eyes closed while he made the X movement. And what do you know? A bunch of wood was in front of him. AWE-some. He grinned, and touched the wood, haha, it was real...or at least solid. "Incendio" he said, with a flick of his wand, and watched as three of the logs got fired up. Oooooh, pretty flames, pretty, pretty flames. He was mesmerized by it, as usual. |
Simon briefly looked up as Professor Kingsley acknowledged his and Raiden's individual work. The fifth year nodding slightly as he showed his understanding of his instructions. "Now a nice fire," he mused quietly almost to himself. "Incendio!" he cast, smiling as the wood caught fire creating a nice little campfire. |

Jenny looked around at everyone else. Some were just summoning wood, while others began making fires...no fair. A fire couldn't be better at a time like this; she was still cold even with her blue blanket around her. Sighing, Jenny practiced making X's with her wand before turning to a clearing and pointing her wand at it. "Focalia!" A few thick pieces of firewood appeared in front of her. Not bad. |
It started with an 'f', she knew that much. It was the rest of the incantation that she couldn't seem to remember. Her eyes flicked to the professor when he spoke. Ah ha! That was it. Focalia. Repeating the word mentally, she continued to practiced the 'x' wand movement in the air. "Focalia." She repeated the wand movements and watched as.....hum. Twigs. Arya tugged on her beanie with her free hand, a small frown crossing her lips. Twigs was not what she wanted. Ya can't roast marshmallows on a twig fire, and you certainly couldn't keep warm with them. Instead of vanishing the two twigs. She kept them. Build a HUGE pile of twigs.....or practice making the twigs, logs. But just in case she was stickin with the twig mountain. |
Quote:
Still clutching that scarf (that wasnt even his to begin with), he spotted Fletcher transfigure a nice wooden pile then set it aflame with ease. With his back to the Professor, he sat himself slightly in front of the GlitterPuff, and made the flicking wand movement at the ground in front of him "Focalia." Nothing. He scowled then repeated it again "Focalia!" he growled. The breeze picked up slightly, blowing in a few dried leaves into that spot. But no twigs, not even an inch. He huffed, then pointed his wand at Fletcher's burning pile "Accio." A few burning twigs rolled his way, then used his shoes to shove them together right on top of the generously given leaves. "Incendio...." the boy cast belatedly, pretending that he was able to conjure up the wood and the fire. If he wanted to keep warm in the great outdoors, he'd learn to shrink a self heating tent with a wide screen tv and a jacuzzi thankyouverymuch. |
Freya let out a small sighed. They going to conjure the wood?Better doing it right away before she's freezing to death. She pulled out her wand trying to picture a wood in her mind. She kept the picture in her mind and making a X movement in the air with her wand before saying the incantation "Focalia!" the wood slowly appeared. 'Yesssssss.I did it' She looked around and saw a few students tried to lit a fire. Okay let's try it. "Incendio!" she said the incantation and suddenly a big fire was burning the wood. Oh Sweet Merlin..NO..!!NO..!! "Aguamenti!" she pointed her wand to the burning wood and a jet of clear water come out from her wand extinguish the fire. "Phew..That was close." she sighed. "Evanesco!" she said and the wood suddenly disappeared. |
Quote:
He smirked and promptly doused both fires with a simple, nonverbal Aguamenti. "Better luck next time!" He vanished all the wet wood and scratched his chin, trying to think up something good and big and made of flammable material for this assignment..... |

From his location, he cast a non-verbal evanesco to eliminate the pile. Quote:
------ "Keep practicing," he called out to the students. "You are doing quite well. Remember, conjuring the fire is a way to see how well you cast the spell for the wood. Damp or fresh wood won't burn, but correctly conjured dry wood will." |
Destiny was keeping her eyes on Evelyn. Yes. She. Was. Even though there was a Professor with them, she did not trust her friend with fire. Perhaps they could make a compromise of some sort. Evelyn will stay away from fire and Destiny will stay away from chocolate.. ..NAH! Shaking that CA-RAZY idea from her head, Destiny pulled out her wand before glancing at Evelyn one last time. She was still watching her..even if her eyes weren't on her. "Focalia!" she said, pronouncing the incantation loud and clear, then making the snazzy X movement with her wand. Pssssh. Easy stuff, she thought as she noticed the board sitting in front of her. Sure the board was VERY thin, and had a few holes here and there, but that did not make her any less awesome. Arms raised above her head in triumph, she waved them around to get Professor Ruffle's attention. "Can I karate chop this thing in half!?" She'd get to the fire part later. |
Eyes flicking to the professor, a half-smile flickering across his face at the praise, he gave the man a nod before looking back to what he was doing. A little water put out the flames, and then a quick evanesco vanished the wet wood. He tried it silently this time, and with a bit more intent behind it. Eyes on the spot on the ground before him, he repeated the 'x' motion. It seemed when he really focused on it, and meant it, more wood was conjured. And larger logs than before, too. Hmmm. Not surprising. Lips still pressed closed, he flicked his wand, and the wood burst into flames. Awesome. He held his gloved hands closer to the flames, gathering a bit of the heat into his fingers instead of putting it out immediately. The gloves only kept him so warm, after all, and this jacket was never meant to seal out the cold of sitting in the snow. |
Louisa strolled into the blue line area and threw her bag randomly while clutching her wand tightly in one hand and the parchment in the other. She wouldn't risk memorizing what the spells were. Besides, she really needed a fire out here. She took one glance at the spell and repeated it many times in her head before. "focalia." And moved the wand in an 'X' move with a big picture of firewood in her head. Tadaaaa! A pile of ragged pieces of woods laid in front of her on the ground. Blink. She stepped closer and knelt down to stare at the… things she just conjured. Hmm.. those were 'woody' enough to be firewood right? With one slightly shaking finger she poked the thing. Aye. It was wood, phew! They were not wet or rotten, just er.. little things that could be lit, hopefully. One step back and cough cough, "Inci—what?" She re-glanced at the paper. "Oh yeah.. Incendio." She pointed at the piled small pieces of wood. A tiiiiiny little flame was lit and quickly faded out. The little girl stomped her foot on the ground causing the snow underneath to swallow it whole so she fell on her butt. Grrr. She tossed the parchment and laid the wand on top of it and started freeing her foot from the ground mumbling "stupid little fire! And wand" With an evil glance at the stick lying there innocently. Few seconds had passed before Louisa was on her feet again and giving the pile another go. "INCENDIO!" Shouting would do the trick then. HEH! BANG! An orange-yellowish flame was lit and started to grow bigger eating the ragged pieces of wood quicker than it was supposed to which led to a two-minute-warmth and then nothing was there except for coaled stuff. Black awful smelling stuff to be accurate, which made the girl coughing and "Bl—ood--y he--ll!"ing at the same time. |

Movement watch. Check. Just try it Feenella, how bad could it be?!Besides that the professor was around. "Incendio",she pointed her wand at the wood. Why didnt anything happen`?! Hellloooo?! "Incendio", she said again doing the movement. Argh. Nothing. |
Quote:
And the concentration was broken by a much familiar voice trying something out. The second time he heard it he knew that she needed help. Eyes on Feenella now, and then he left his fire unattended, yeah, that's right, and took a few steps toward her. "No, no, like this" he said, making the wand movement again, "One flick up, and two small ones down" but, of course, he didn't say the incantation because she will make it happen on her own, yes. He smiled, "Try it again" and focus, that was the most important and most annoying thing. Focusing. |
James, just like the first part of the class, stayed quiet and 'practiced' making it look like he was having a bit of trouble. Oh. It was so hard. Woe is Jim. A half disguised yawn might have given him away. |
Quote:
Jenny pointed her wand at the pile of wood and just did small random wave movements. "Incen...dio?" A tiny flame barely appeared on the wood and vanished before she could even blink. Jenny sighed. She looked around to see if there was anyone she could talk to. |
Dianna watched as the others tried the spell. She knew she had to try it too so breathing a deep breathe she held her wand and muttered, "Focalia.". Concentrating hard Dianna saw a piece of wood appear until finally she was sure that it was real and not just her imagination. |

Preston looked at her pointedly before checking on the rest. Quote:

Her beanie pulled low on her forehead, Ivory repeated the incantation in a little musical litany as she stepped a little ways away from the other students as instructed. Didn't want anybody's newly conjured blanket to catch on fire now did she. Tying the edges of her own said blanket around her neck just for additional warmth over her cloak, she found a good little spot and brought up her wand, the skin contact making the little regular blue flame flicker happily at its tip. It was a shame that the small core inspired flame didn't create any form of warmth. Staring woefully at it, she turned her attention to the spot in front of her. The empty spot. Well the soon to be not so empty spot because it would be filled with a nice bundle of logs, right? Right? The was the idea anyway. Alright concentrate. Thinking about the incantation, she repeated it aloud again. Glad that all the repetition on the way over had resulted in the right pronunciation. Visualization though that was another matter. Burrowing her brow in thought, she tried to think of fire wood. Camp fire wood. Dry camp fire wood. Really dry wood. Wand moving in an X pattern, Ivory tried the spell for the first time. "Focalia." Staring down the resulting still empty space, she centered her stance and tried again this time concentrating on the wood winking into existence. "Focalia." Hmm well maybe winking into existence wasn't the best analogy. Maybe thinking about it in the form of conjuration. As in not to concentrate on where it came from but more on it being there. One second empty space the next occupied by fire wood. Keeping this concept in her mind, she took a deep breath and tried again. "Focalia." Not more than a second later, a tiny bundle of three miniature logs appeared. Three very brittle logs. Kicking them softly with the toe of her boot she watched the wood break off easily. Blowing out a sigh, she flicked her wand. Not bothering to light those logs on fire, she instead cast Evanesco. No point in making a fire on wood that was disintegrating. It seemed there was such a thing as too dry. Oh well, time to try again. |
she kept her green scarf wrapped snuggly around her neck she raised her wand and made the "x" in the air "Focalia!" She looked down at the sad little pile of twigs on the ground *sigh* that wasn't right lets try again "evanesco" the tiny twigs vanished from their spot at least she'd got that spell right. She smiled, alright now here we go "Focalia!" she said as she made the movement in the air. A nice bundle of fire wood appeared at her feet.Yay! alright now to light it. "incendio!" an itty bitty spark flew out of her wand and went out before it even touched the wood. oh well she'd try again |

Jenny noticed someone far away showing another person (wait...she looks familiar) teaching the wand movement of the spell, or at least, that's what it looked like to Jenny. Quickly turning back to her pile of wood, Jenny tried to copy what she saw as much as she could; the pair in question was too far away and she didn't want to look like she was eavesdropping or something. Jenny pointed her wand once again. "Incendio!" Jenny said with a bit more confidence this time. A slightly bigger flame appeared on the pile of wood, burning brightly in the cold. That wasn't so bad, right? |
Ari had certainly done this before. Although she knew that nearly none of the teachers trusted a blind girl with fire, she was glad that she had the chance to prove that she was a competant witch. Turning her head from side to side, she determined that she was a safe distance away, and knew that accidents always happened. She had done this before, and, as her spells usually required, without the visual image in her head, she had to remember the texture and smell of dry wood. Pulling out her wand, and pressing her dark glasses closer to her eyes, she made the X motion smoothly and uttered "Focalia". She waited a moment, before extending a hand. She felt three reasonably-sized pieces of wood--dry wood. So far, so good. Remembering exactly where the wood was--Ari was quite good at remembering things--she took one step back, lightly jerked her wand up, then down twice, and said "Incendio". After maybe three seconds, she heard the quiet crackle of the wood, which grew louder after a few moments. She smiled to herself and slowly walked around the fire, feeling for any places where the flame should not have spread. But nothing felt out of place. |
Quote:
"I'm so sorry. Professor. I didn't know what happened. I think I'm imagining the wrong fire in my mind." Freya smiled apologetically. She's not so sure what to do next. She want to try again but what happened if the fire she created this time much bigger and she couldn't cast the Aguamenti in time? An assistance?Yeah that was a good idea but who? Most of her friends were first year. She looked at Fee to ask her help but she seems had a problem creating the fire too. |
Quote:
Destiny should've known Professor Kingsley wouldn't let her do anything fun. She might have gave him a little glare before nodding her head and turning her attention back to the board in front of her. Pffft. What kind of fire would she create with that thing? It had holes and the fire would just seep through. If she chopped it in half, she could have placed one on top of the other and no fire would seep. Whatever, she knew the spell now, she could practice her karate in the dorm. Ha! Tossing the holey board to the side, she once again moved her wand in the X motion, "Focalia." she said, and once again sitting before her was a thin piece of wood. The only difference this time was no holes. Picking the board up, she examined it for a second to make sure it wasn't wet, and when she knew for certain it wasn't, she placed it back on the ground. Must not karate chop! It was a huge urge to resist, but she managed and with a quick glance towards Evelyn, Destiny pointed her wand at the board. "Incendio!" Mwaha! She had fire. Where was Mia? She'd do good in this lesson. Hehe. |
Alice was excited to try this spell. She had read about it, and to her being able to produce elements was just awesome. Alice closed her eyes and pictured a pile of logs, much like the ones that were found in her own fireplace at home. "Alright, here goes nothing," Alice said, pulling her wand out of her holster. "Focalia!" Alice said. She smiled brightly as the wood appeared before her. Whew, that seemed much easier than the scarf for some reason. Now to try and light it... Alice pictured the logs on fire, more for her own mental reference rather than her needing it for the spell to work. After a deep breath she said, "Incendio!" A small flame appeared in the middle of the logs, spreading a little bit before going out completely. Hmm...that didn't go quite as planned. |
Quote:
A small smile flicked across her face as she gently tugged at the edge of her old beanie. "Evanesco." Arya quickly vanished her twigs and log, watching the space in front of her become devoid of wood again. She already knew the fire part, and wanted to work on the wood part first. Making an 'x' motion with her wand she said, "Focalia." This time a three smallish logs sat in front of her. Another flick and they were vanished as well, clearing space so she could continue conjuring. |
Quote:
Right. Louisa took one deep breath to release the too excitement (i.e. anger) and "Fo—calia" With a sweeeet Looking closely, she knew they were good enough… at last. "I did it! I did it!" She clapped and jumped once before containing the excitement. Oooh! Now that was something to tell Enya about. Sparing the previous attempts of course  Now the fire part! She stood there concentrating hard on the pile and piercing it with her |
@ Jenny *snuggles* Aw....no marshmallows? Concentration...concentration...Concentraion...Concentration..... Kurumi repeated the words over and over in her head and imagined a nice modest sized pile of wood in front of her. OK, image perfected - just like the older student had explained to her - now it was time to try the wand movement and incantation to make the image in her head appear in front of her. "Focalia," she said with confidence as a small pile of wood appeared in front of her. Sure, none of them were logs...but it was a starter right? She could work on making them pretty and not like they had just gone through a wood chipper later. She looked over at Jenny standing standing next to her with her small flames dancing on her wood. "Aw....they are so cute," she said kneeling down to get a better look at the little flames. Kurumi stood back up and decided she best try and light her wood. She picked up piece. It felt solid enough...she waved her wand and said, "Incendio," only to find that sparks flew out of her wand, showering her wood, but by no means creating anything that looked like fire. She scooted closer to Jenny. Maybe they should be working together on this one too? |
Now time to try out the wood. Dianna fixed the wood so that it was directly in front of her before muttering, "Incendio.". Surprisingly nothing happened. Maybe it was because she wasn't sure if it would work. Trying a bit harder and with more effort and concentration, Dianna pointed her wand at the piece of wood. "Incendio!". Success! Wood=Burning. Dianna watched as the fire grew bigger. Good enough to make some s'mores. |
*snuggles back* SPOILER!!: Kurumi "Evanesco!" Jenny pointed her wand again and her pile of wood vanished. She then turned over to Kurumi, who had just complimented her tiny yet useless flames! Right now, Kurumi DID look like she was struggling to make a fire... "Maybe you should say it a bit louder?" Jenny suggested to Kurumi as she tried to picture another pile of wood in her head. Thick, dry, sturdy pieces of brown wood. She pointed to the clearing in front of her. "Focalia!" Slightly bigger pieces of wood appeared, but the good thing was that they were perfectly dry and sturdy. Yay! |
Hmmm. Vanishing the wood once more, Raiden considered the empty space before him. Wand tapped absently on the ground, conjuring nothing as he thought. He knew intent could affect the amount, but... could he vary the type? Maybe by just focusing on that? He flicked his wand, silently casting and tracing the X pattern. Instead of the small logs conjured previous, a handful of cherry logs appeared this time. They lit easily, and didn't throw off as much smoke as the previous attempts. Interesting. |
Quote:
Incendio! she yelled probably much more louder than was necessary. Jenny had told her to try saying it louder...Flames burst out of her wand and her wood quickly caught fire. The flames were a little too large and nearly singed her robes. Ooops.... "Aguamenti! Aguamenti!" she squeaked as water came out of her wand and drenched her pillar of fire until it was no more. She still had her eyebrows, right? "Maybe...I said that too loud?" |
Quote:
Hm...now how to make the right amount of fire. Even though she saw that one guy showing how to do the wand movement, he was too far away and she couldn't even figure out what it looked like anyway. So much for that plan. "Do you know what the wand movement is for Incendio?" Jenny asked Kurumi, but she had a strong feeling Kurumi didn't know. After all, Kurumi just almost burned herself last time. |
Raiden to the rescue? Quote:
Kurumi blushed and quickly cast the proper spell to make her wood chip remains vanish. "Unfortunately, no," she blushed as she conjured up another pile of wood. This time, she produced one big log. Much better than wood chips. She looked around to see if there was anyone nearby. She saw the older Slytherin boy she had given cookies to after the second task. He was smart and brilliant. Maybe he could help the two of them? "Um....excuse me...Mr. Raiden?" Kurumi asked shyly running her fingers through her pony tail. "D-d-d-do you mind helping my friend and me?" |
lolol *comes to play* Stretching his fingers over the flames, in a vague attempt to measure how much heat was being thrown off, he very nearly missed Kurumi's sudden burst of flames. Eyes widening, he tightened his grip on his wand, but she had quickly handled it by herself. Relaxing, he had gone back to what he was doing, though his attention was now split between his own work and their work a short ways away. Looking up as the little girl approached, he listened to her, then glanced back over toward where she'd been practising with another student. Mister... Raiden? Heh. Fighting back a grin at that, he nodded before vanishing his own work. Didn't want to leave it here, and lit. Who knew which student would trip over it or something else. Pushing himself up from the ground, he brushed his hands off and nodded, stepping around her to move closer to where she and her friend had been working. "What did you need help with?" Pause. "And you don't have to call me 'mister', you know..." He was only eighteen, so not really old enough for that in his own mind. When professors said it... it was different, and they used his last name instead too soooo... Yeah. Mr. Raiden just sounded odd. |
yayz! SPOILER!!: MISTER Raiden "S-s-s-sorry," she blushed fiddling with her fingers. "My mother always told me to call people that to show respect..." She turned back to her single big log - still better than wood chips - but was a little afraid to try and cast the fire making spell again. What if she actually singed her eyebrows off this time?! "Um...well...Jenny and I are having a problem with the Incendio incantation..." that much was probably obvious to him seeing as she had just made a pillar of fire and neither of them had managed to keep a flame for more than 10 seconds. "Is...is there a special wand movement...or something...?" Kurumi began running her fingers through her hair as she looked shyly back and forth between Raiden and her log. |
SPOILER!!: yay! SPOILER!!: Kurumi lol "Yep, we definitely need help here!" Jenny said as Kurumi asked Raiden...was that his name...to help them. "I'm Jenny, nice to meet you, by the way." Well, it would be awkward if she didn't send out a proper introduction, right? |
Hmmm. "Your mum... she's Japanese isn't she." He wondered if that was something all Japanese parents had in common. His father had always told him that Mister and Miss and Lady and Sir were respectful terms. He grinned. "Don't apologise. I used to do that when I was younger too... I called my best friend 'Miss Daphne Hopton' for a while." And there had been 'Miss Healer Intern Lady Trelawney' and 'Miss Evolette McKenna' and Merlin knew how many more. It had been a habit hard-broken. Ahhh. The incendio spell. Kneeling down, he touched the log Kurumi had conjured and looked at her friend. Jenny. "Nice to meet you Jenny. I'm Raiden Kururugi." He withdrew his fingers from the log and conjured a few of his own without comment. "Incendio's rather easy actually, once you've gotten the hang of it..." He looked from one girl to the other, and gave his wand a gentle, circular flick before pointing at the logs and muttering the incantation. The flames burst forth from where his wand had been pointed. "It's more about intent than loudness." He repeated the small circle and flick, and the flames doubled. "As long as you're focusing on it and you say the spell correctly, you should be able to do it..." He flicked his wand again and doused a bit of the flames, to keep the small fire manageable. "Don't get frustrated if you can't get it right away, either. Some spells take time to learn, and nobody gets it right on the first try. If you get upset though, it doesn't make it any easier to cast." Actually made it harder in most cases. |
SPOILER!!: Raiden-sensei "My mother is," Kurumi flushed. A very traditional one at that. Kurumi smiled at the older boy with her violet eyes. He kind of reminded her of her oldest brother. She looked at Jenny and saw her blushing and looking like she had just seen the most delicious cookie in the world. "Hello....earth to Jenny..." Kurumi whispered jabbing her in the side gently with her elbow. Kurumi then watched as Raiden conjured some fire flames on her log. She flushed at his comment about loudness...had he heard her scream at her pile of wood chips earlier? Her hands went to her cheeks to hide the redness. "Intent...concentration...focus..." Kurumi repeated the words several more times in her head before copying his wand movement and whispering, "Incendio" and pointing her wand at the log...only a little too far right. A small fire appeared on the ground and burned brightly. "Uh...is there a way to move the fire from there to the log..." she asked in a panicked voice. |
SPOILER!!: Raiden :) Just then she felt a jab on her elbow. Kurumi was trying to get her attention. "Oh, sorry Kurumi." Then Jenny looked at Kurumi's face; she had an expression that looked like she was looking at something weird... Shaking her head violently, she turned back to Raiden, determined not to give in to his handsomeness. "Thanks Raiden! I'll try that." Jenny looked back at her own pile of wood. She poked the wood twice to make sure they were dry and sturdy as before and then she pointed her wand. She tried to mimic Raiden by gently making circles. "Incendio!" Flames flew out of her wand. Then...there they were. Big enough to burn bright and warm and small enough to not burn anything else outside the vicinity. Yay! Giving Raiden a nod, Jenny looked to see how Kurumi was doing. Yep, she still needed help. Jenny could help her...except she doesn't know as much as Raiden did. |
Kellen couldn't help but smile to himself when Kingsley mentioned no food in the lesson. It seemed to him that quite a lot of the teachers this year had incorporated food in their lesson plans, and most of it was some kind of junk food; perhaps they were trying to plump all the students up for something. Keeping a safe distance from the other students casting, he made the slashing 'X' in the air, intoned "Focalia!" and watched the half-dozen blocks of wood appear. Without testing them with fire, he could tell they weren't right; too fresh. He and Sabel had brought back fresh wood to their campsite when they'd been camping, and nearly smoked the whole place out after stubbornly insisting they could make a fire with it. Vanishing the wood with a non-verbal evanesco, since Kingsley seemed to be a fan of non-verbal spells, Kellen thought about the ideal type of wood they'd used to get a fire going. Dry, and lots of splinters to catch fire faster. With this in mind, he repeated the wand motion, "Focalia!" Better. Now to test it with incendio, also cast non-verbally. Quote:
Varying the intensity of the fire? Why did that sound like it would only lead to problems? Hopefully none of the students would find themselves experiencing tendencies toward pyromania. |
Patroclus grinned as he watched the Professor demonstration, this was going to be an awesome spell to learn! Finding a spot on the blue line, Patroclus took out his wand again, "Time to give it a whirl," drawing an 'X' in the air, the boy uttered, "Focalia" but in true first time style, nothing appeared. "Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" the Lion boy grumbled, noting that students younger than him were succeeding. "Calm," he breathed before preparing himself again. "Focalia" Patroclus spoke again, crossing his wand in the air, marveling at the clutch of wood that appeared at his feet, "Aw yeah!" he smiled doing a victory dance, "Incendio!" as the flames whooshed from his wand, the wood pile went up in a warm rush of air. Patroclus couldn't help but do another dance, but this time around his bonfire. |
Ahh, he was right. Her mum and his dad, they had more in common than their shared homeland. At least his dad had gone past his traditionalist views, and integrated himself into this society pretty well. Who knew if Kurumi's mum had done the same. He watched both girls attempt it, biting back the small smile when Kurumi's ended up just off of her logs. Before the flame could go out, he cast a silent charm, and a light, warm breeze lifted it into the missed wood. "Try it again," he murmured, waving one hand over it. "Might go out, since you hit the dirt first." She'd done it though, as had Jenny. The boy nodded encouragingly at them both. Quick, they were. "Good job." |

Oh yay! Raiden had managed to save her flame despite her aim being terrible. OK, time to focus on aiming at the log this time. She gave her wand another wave and repeated the spell. A weak flame came out of her wand, but she knew that was not going to be enough to keep burning. "Just a little more," she said as if she were asking her wand and the fire for permission. The flame hit the log this time and stayed there burning nice and bright. No pillar of fire this time. Just a steady flame. Now she really wanted marshmallows.... "Thanks," she smiled giving Raiden a quick look before returning her focus to the fire. How long should she stare at it? Was it safe to lower her wand now? Were they really not going to roast marshmallows? |
Ahhh good. Kurumi had gotten it this time! A good-sized flame and she'd not cast it into the dirt. The prefect leaned forward, hands feeling the warmth from her little fire. "It was just a hot air charm," he murmured in Jenny's direction, likely squashing all her excitement over it. "If you aim it right, you can get it under and then it's almost like levitating the flame onto the logs. Have to be careful though, else it'll... well it'll go out." He leaned back, one gloved hand touching his rather pink ear, and looked between them again. "Need anything else, ladies?" He pushed himself to his feet. "If not... I'll be over there, in case something comes to mind." He eyed the fires. "Be mindful of those. Don't burn yourselves." |

Fletcher closed his eyes for a moment and took a breath, deciding to conjure up a different type of wood. Or not wood at all, just something that he knew was made of wood and would be flammable if he did it right. "Focalia," he half-whispered, making the x-shape with his wand. He opened his eyes and after a brief pause, realized he had succeeded in conjuring up a copy of Professor Kingsley's desk. Haha SCOREEEEEE. Fletcher grinned and walked around the desk in admiration of his spellwork, nodding as he noticed that the desk was, in fact, much more brittle, dry, and worn than the real one sitting inside the professor's office. Still, this would make a great bonfire. "Incendio," Fletcher ordered lazily, flicking his wand at the desk and then taking a quick step backward as the large piece of furniture went up in flames. AWESOMEEEEE. |
lol. omg Roro. ...Sensei? The young man let himself laugh at that, just a little. Sensei. He was... er... a bit underqualified for that. Just a little. Watching as the two combined their fires, he moved back to where he'd been previously, and had just settled on the ground again when... "Fletcher...?" the muttering was more to himself than anyone else, but his eyes had turned to him as he looked around at the other students, just in time to see him conjure a desk. Why had he- ... O_O!!!!!! WHAT WAS HE DOING??? Raiden's jaw dropped in utter confusion as the desk went up in flames, and he remained where he was on the cold ground. What... what even?! Was he insane? The prefect hurriedly pushed himself to his feet again, his immediate concern being making sure that the younger students were nowhere near the flaming furniture. "Fletcher are you mad?! Put it out!" Big desk equalled big fire, after all. |
Vienna made an X in the air with her wand and said "Focalia" nothing happened the first time round but she had expected that. Trying again "Focalia" She was amazed when a pile of wood was laying on the ground near her. Knowing her next task was to light the pile on fire she was just about to when all of a sudden she saw one of the older students light up an entire desk looking extremely pleased with himself about it. Vienna moved away taking her pile of wood with her so she could cast the incendio charm. "Incendio" she called and nothing happened not even a puff of smoke after the third time she was becoming increasingly frustrated and about to give up |
yup, quoted myself Quote:
Kellen couldn't help but send a look in the boy's direction. Really? Really, Fletcher? Conjuring up a crappy old desk to set on fire? Was the Hufflepuff trying to prove a point about something, or was he just completely unable to participate in something without multiple people paying attention to him? Hmm, probably. But it appeared Raiden was gearing up for full Prefect Mode, so after he'd put his correctly sized fire out and vanished the wood, Kellen just... stood and watched. And waited for Kingsley to notice. Since that was quite obviously what Fletcher wanted. |
Wooooot! Professor said she could burn the wood! Mwahahahahahaha! Erm..right. Clearing her throat, Evelyn glanced around before looking at the two wood pieces on the ground in front of her. This was completely different than Potions class. She didn't have to make a small little flame. She had to make sure the wood was dry enough to BURN. Besides, they were outside, no where near something that could catch on fire and burn the whole grounds down. Sorta. "Incendio." she said, letting the flame fly towards the wood. It was...burning! It was BURNING! YES! IT-... It was gone. Whaaa? |
Quote:
His eyes widened, though, at the most amazing demonstration ever! Of course, it had to be Sir Awesome the one to do so. "WOW" he said, eyes still widened, but their look was one of amazement. Lookit those flames! Sooooo pretty! And high! "Wicked!" yes, that was all he said, eyes still on the burning desk. Haha. |
Quote:
Or not, as the case may be. Flicking his wand forcefully, a torrent of water doused the desk. Another swipe, and the smoldering, sopping mess vanished. "Everyone put out your fires and vanish your wood. Class is dismissed." He made his way into the group of students, ready to extinguish any fires. "Your homework will be, in part, to practice all the spells mentioned today as you see fit. Whether that means you outfit a snowman or create new a new set of winter wear or roast marshmallows, find ways to use them." He looked over at the melted snow near where the bonfire has been. "Those of you who are not proficient with incendio.. or are unable to control yourself... are restricted to practicing that spell in the Transfiguration practice room I will be opening." He paused, before adding, "Mister Fletcher, a word, please." |
Whaaaaat? Extinguish the pretty flames? But he couldn't kill them! How could someone be so evil as to kill flames? Oh, yes, the fire needed to be done with soonish. His mouth was open, as he watched in disbelief how Professor Kingsley destroyed Fletcher's work. No, no drama there, right? With a very disappointed look on his face, Treyen flicked his wand and said "Aguamenti" before seeing the water put a stopper on...fire. Bye-bye flames. And then he Evanesco'ed the wet wood off the ground. There. He was done. "Great lesson, Professor, see you soon!" he said, taking his bag along with him as he...left. |
Quote:
Just then, the professor said that class was over. What? Already? Maybe he had to end it early because that one Hufflepuff guy conjured something that looked like the Professor's desk? Sadly, Jenny pointed her wand at the fire she and Kurumi just made. "Aguamenti." It took a while but eventually the flames died down. Then she waved her wand to make the used wood vanish. "Thanks for the lesson, Professor!" Jenny said as she gathered her blanket and other things. Then she tried to wave goodbye to Raiden (was he even looking?) and turned to Kurumi as she headed back to the castle. "Do you want to roast marshmallows later?" |
Quote:
"Sure," she smiled picking up her things. "Let's just try not to PINGO them any strange flavors." |
Dianna put out her flame and saw that she had also been burning some part of grass. Accidentally of course. *whistle* "Great Lesson Professor Kingsley!" Dianna said as she got all her belongings and marched back towards the castle. |
Shooting a crooked grin at Treyen, who obviously was enjoying Fletcher's handiwork as much as he was himself, Fletch put out his wand to calm Raiden. "All right, all right," he grumbled, giving the prefect dirty looks. "It was just for prac---" Quote:
Slowly edging away from the now-soggy desk, Fletcher hid his hands behind his back. Oh, class dismissed. That's great. He edged away even farther but halted on the spot when Kingsley called him out. "Er... yes sir," he said, nodding slowly and waiting for the rest of their classmates to leave. Maybe the 'word' he wanted to say would just be 'awesome,' followed by 'that was awesome. Good work. I'm impressed.' Maybe????! |
Quote:
"Oh yeah, can't forget about that." Jenny nodded solemnly. |
'Just for practise'. Right. Raiden's lips pressed into a thin line, fingers twitching at his side as he waited for Fletcher to put it out. Others had managed to practise just fine without conjuring furniture to light aflame. Thankfully, the professor put it out before Raiden had to, and before Fletcher had any more of a chance to protest that it was 'only practise'. Shoving his hands into his pockets, he looked around at the other students before taking a few steps toward the castle. "Great class, sir," he called in the professor's direction. It had been; they'd had fire and nobody had lit themselves up or anything. That was a triumph in itself. The young man paused, to make sure that nobody would need help before he went back to the castle. Or to make sure that Fletcher wouldn't be conjuring any more furniture to light on fire. Either way. |
Alice wasn't sure what to do with her conjured wood, so she left it there, making sure it was completely out. "Hope you don't mind if I just left the wood I conjured there Professor Kingsley," Alice said as she collected her things. She was looking forward to practicing incendio a bit more because she didn't feel like she'd really gotten a hold on it during class. "Thanks for the great lesson Professor!" Alice said with a smile and tiny wave before she was off and heading towards the castle. |

And then, eyes back to the boy. Quote:
"Mister Fletcher," he said, sternly. "Would you care to tell me exactly what you were thinking when you began your... display?" Eyes narrowed, he tilted his head to the side as he considered the boy. |
"Excuse me, sir. I don't think I can get this.." She pointed to the little bonfire she had done, ".. vanished." Because she didn't want to risk that evanesco thing, her cookie was crunched instead of disappearing last time she did that. Louisa mounted her bag and tugged her wand, "Have a good day, sir, that was really.." Fun? "..great lesson." Uh-huh. She liked almost all the lessons as a matter of fact but still conjuring a bonfire was massive she would go and promise Johnny to roast him a marshmallow of her own made fire. How cool was that? |
Patroclus didn't want to stop dancing around his fire, but it seemed he would have to. "Aguamenti!" the Fire dancer, uttered pointing his wand at the fire, which was doused with a spray of water. Rendering it a pile of steaming ash, "Evanesco!" the boy added, before re holstering his wand. "Thanks for a enlightening lesson Sir," get it....Enlightening! "See you next time!" |
Quote:
"Errrrrrrrr," he started, very articulately. "I was thinking, sir... well I was wondering, really, if I could conjure things that didn't necessary look like firewood but were made of wood and could therefore still be flammable??? So I imagined a desk," not just any desk, but he left that part out, "and I was surprised it worked!" And it had been AWESOME. He tried to smile politely, angelically even, but Kingsley's narrowed eyes made his facial expression fall dreadfully flat. Well. The transfiguration professor shouldn't be that upset. It could be a lot worse. Fletcher's initial idea, after all, had been to conjure up the Slytherin table from the Great Hall. |
Quote:
Because, like it or not, the boy was a champion and thus is a position to influence a great number of students. "Or, perhaps, what it could have provoked among students who imagine themselves your peer or your superior who, had I not ended class, tried to out do you?" There were two words to describe the expression on Professor Kingsley's face. Annoyed. And disappointed. |
Quote:
It was the disappointment evident in his tone and expression... even amongst all the ruffles. "I... I didn't even think that far ahead," Fletcher answered in a tiny, miserable tone. He most definitely looked like an admonished child... even though there was a teeny, invisible Vindictus-like devil on his shoulder flexing his biceps at the implication that people looked up to Fletcher. Heh. People admired him. And his skillzz. HEHEHEH. That was cheering. And then yeah, there were people like Raiden who considered themselves superior to him and would have stepped in and shut Fletcher's fire-party down faster than he could say, 'fwooper.' So what was Kingsley going to do with Fletcher? Or worse... TO Fletcher?! Not throw him in detention, surely.... maybe he should say something....... "Sorry about that er... situation, sir," Fletcher looked up and nodded somberly. And? "And I won't let it happen again." In your line of sight. Sir. |
"You did not think," the professor repeated. "What if everyone had tried to copy you? Or had tried to make even larger things to set ablaze? I expect you to set a good example for your fellow students. You represent the school and are held to a higher standard." Sighing heavily, he dropped his arms. "Come to the transfiguration practice room after the third task. We will continue this, then. Now, go." |
Did he know Fletcher entertained ideas of setting things of epic proportion on fire, and encouraging his fellow classmates to do just that? How would he know though? How would he know that just a few moments ago Fletcher had been totally determined to conjure up a table from the Great Hall and egg LiL Lockhart on to making a campfire out of it? Unless... Professor Kingsley was a legilimens?! GASP! Yes, that had to be it! He was invading Fletcher's miiiiiiind!!! There was no way he could have figured the Hufflepuff's obvious pyromaniatic intentions otherwise!!!!!! "Uh uh uh," the boy tried to imagine his brain as a tightly sealed safe as he mulled over Kingsley's words. He squinted his eyes in concentration and then nodded hurriedly to the professor. "I'm sorry." Again. "Yes sir." He tucked his wand in his back pocket and bowed his head in a perfect picture of piety, shuffling out of the room somewhat... backwards. You weren't supposed to turn your back to a legilimens, right? Wasn't that the rule or something? |
