Transfiguration Lesson I, Part Two: FIRE! [On the Grounds]
A sizable section of the grounds, far away from trees, and shrubs and most things flammable, has been designated for the next part of class.
Professor Kingsley is standing there, directing you all to gather near a blue line glowing in the snow.
"Now that we're all here, I want you to spread out. The only things at risk of catching here are yourselves, but if you are careful, that won't happen. You may pair up if you like. Use the focalia spell to conjure your wood and then, to test your wood, try to light it with incendio."
He paused, turning to the younger students. "Don't be afraid to ask for help, either from me or another student. And don't worry if all you can manage is a stick or two at a time that doesn't burn. It takes practice."
Pausing, he looked over everyone. "Safety first, please, and remember that if the fire seems a bit much, aguamenti is your friend."

SPOILER!!: Raiden :)
Hmmm.
"Your mum... she's Japanese isn't she." He wondered if that was something all Japanese parents had in common. His father had always told him that Mister and Miss and Lady and Sir were respectful terms. He grinned. "Don't apologise. I used to do that when I was younger too... I called my best friend 'Miss Daphne Hopton' for a while."
And there had been 'Miss Healer Intern Lady Trelawney' and 'Miss Evolette McKenna' and Merlin knew how many more. It had been a habit hard-broken.
Ahhh. The incendio spell. Kneeling down, he touched the log Kurumi had conjured and looked at her friend. Jenny.
"Nice to meet you Jenny. I'm Raiden Kururugi." He withdrew his fingers from the log and conjured a few of his own without comment. "Incendio's rather easy actually, once you've gotten the hang of it..."
He looked from one girl to the other, and gave his wand a gentle, circular flick before pointing at the logs and muttering the incantation.
The flames burst forth from where his wand had been pointed.
"It's more about intent than loudness." He repeated the small circle and flick, and the flames doubled. "As long as you're focusing on it and you say the spell correctly, you should be able to do it..."
He flicked his wand again and doused a bit of the flames, to keep the small fire manageable.
"Don't get frustrated if you can't get it right away, either. Some spells take time to learn, and nobody gets it right on the first try. If you get upset though, it doesn't make it any easier to cast."
Actually made it harder in most cases.
"Oooohhh..." Jenny looked in amazement as Raiden (right?) gently waved his wand and flames flew out of his wand. Now that made sense! Better than whatever she saw from that one guy she was spying far away on. Yes, this guy is definitely better than the OTHER guy...and cuter too.
Just then she felt a jab on her elbow. Kurumi was trying to get her attention. "Oh, sorry Kurumi." Then Jenny looked at Kurumi's face; she had an expression that looked like she was looking at something weird...
Shaking her head violently, she turned back to Raiden, determined not to give in to his handsomeness. "Thanks Raiden! I'll try that." Jenny looked back at her own pile of wood. She poked the wood twice to make sure they were dry and sturdy as before and then she pointed her wand. She tried to mimic Raiden by gently making circles. "Incendio!" Flames flew out of her wand. Then...there they were. Big enough to burn bright and warm and small enough to not burn anything else outside the vicinity. Yay!
Giving Raiden a nod, Jenny looked to see how Kurumi was doing. Yep, she still needed help. Jenny could help her...except she doesn't know as much as Raiden did.
Kellen couldn't help but smile to himself when Kingsley mentioned no food in the lesson. It seemed to him that quite a lot of the teachers this year had incorporated food in their lesson plans, and most of it was some kind of junk food; perhaps they were trying to plump all the students up for something.
Keeping a safe distance from the other students casting, he made the slashing 'X' in the air, intoned "Focalia!" and watched the half-dozen blocks of wood appear. Without testing them with fire, he could tell they weren't right; too fresh. He and Sabel had brought back fresh wood to their campsite when they'd been camping, and nearly smoked the whole place out after stubbornly insisting they could make a fire with it.
Vanishing the wood with a non-verbal evanesco, since Kingsley seemed to be a fan of non-verbal spells, Kellen thought about the ideal type of wood they'd used to get a fire going. Dry, and lots of splinters to catch fire faster. With this in mind, he repeated the wand motion, "Focalia!"
Better. Now to test it with incendio, also cast non-verbally.

For a moment, he'd thought Kingsley was going to say that those over fifth year should try testing the burn-ability of their wood by building a fire manually. It seemed an odd thought to have, on reflection, but there it was.
Varying the intensity of the fire? Why did that sound like it would only lead to problems? Hopefully none of the students would find themselves experiencing tendencies toward pyromania.
Patroclus grinned as he watched the Professor demonstration, this was going to be an awesome spell to learn!
Finding a spot on the blue line, Patroclus took out his wand again, "Time to give it a whirl," drawing an 'X' in the air, the boy uttered, "Focalia" but in true first time style, nothing appeared. "Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm" the Lion boy grumbled, noting that students younger than him were succeeding. "Calm," he breathed before preparing himself again.
"Focalia" Patroclus spoke again, crossing his wand in the air, marveling at the clutch of wood that appeared at his feet, "Aw yeah!" he smiled doing a victory dance, "Incendio!" as the flames whooshed from his wand, the wood pile went up in a warm rush of air.
Patroclus couldn't help but do another dance, but this time around his bonfire.
Ahh, he was right. Her mum and his dad, they had more in common than their shared homeland. At least his dad had gone past his traditionalist views, and integrated himself into this society pretty well. Who knew if Kurumi's mum had done the same.
He watched both girls attempt it, biting back the small smile when Kurumi's ended up just off of her logs. Before the flame could go out, he cast a silent charm, and a light, warm breeze lifted it into the missed wood.
"Try it again," he murmured, waving one hand over it. "Might go out, since you hit the dirt first."
She'd done it though, as had Jenny. The boy nodded encouragingly at them both. Quick, they were.

"Good job."
Jenny's eyes drew back to Raiden and widened in amazement as the flame from the ground flew gently to Kurumi's log. Even her mouth was open in amazement. "What spell is that?" Jenny asked before she could stop herself.

Oh yay! Raiden had managed to save her flame despite her aim being terrible. OK, time to focus on aiming at the log this time. She gave her wand another wave and repeated the spell. A weak flame came out of her wand, but she knew that was not going to be enough to keep burning. "Just a little more," she said as if she were asking her wand and the fire for permission. The flame hit the log this time and stayed there burning nice and bright. No pillar of fire this time. Just a steady flame. Now she really wanted marshmallows....
"Thanks," she smiled giving Raiden a quick look before returning her focus to the fire. How long should she stare at it? Was it safe to lower her wand now? Were they really not going to roast marshmallows?

Ahhh good. Kurumi had gotten it this time! A good-sized flame and she'd not cast it into the dirt. The prefect leaned forward, hands feeling the warmth from her little fire.
"It was just a hot air charm," he murmured in Jenny's direction, likely squashing all her excitement over it. "If you aim it right, you can get it under and then it's almost like levitating the flame onto the logs. Have to be careful though, else it'll... well it'll go out."
He leaned back, one gloved hand touching his rather pink ear, and looked between them again.
"Need anything else, ladies?" He pushed himself to his feet. "If not... I'll be over there, in case something comes to mind." He eyed the fires. "Be mindful of those. Don't burn yourselves."

"I think I am OK now," Kurumi chirped. "Thanks, Raiden-sensei." She would have to try and remember that hot air charm for later. Actually, it sounded like something that would be fun to play with now. Maybe Jenny and her could pretend their logs were juggling fire...tempting...

"Oh, that's cool!" Jenny smiled. "I would love to do that! Well not to burn down a building, but at least like to bring something in case I'm stuck in cold weather." Yeah...that would be awesome. Even then, Jenny worried about how her clumsiness might lead her to burn herself anyway.

"Hey, Kurumi, do you think we should combine our fires together?" Jenny looked at her fire. It was burning still, but it was on the verge of dying down already.

"Sure," she smiled as she was about to reach down and pick up the burning log. Woah...that was so not a good idea. She took out her wand again and instead charmed her log to float over beside Jenny's so the flame from her's could catch on Jenny's too. Soon, they had a nice medium sized fire going instead of a small one. Kurumi's tummy grumbled. "I wish we could roast marshmallows..."

Fletcher closed his eyes for a moment and took a breath, deciding to conjure up a different type of wood. Or not wood at all, just something that he knew was made of wood and would be flammable if he did it right.
"Focalia," he half-whispered, making the x-shape with his wand. He opened his eyes and after a brief pause, realized he had succeeded in conjuring up a copy of Professor Kingsley's desk. Haha SCOREEEEEE. Fletcher grinned and walked around the desk in admiration of his spellwork, nodding as he noticed that the desk was, in fact, much more brittle, dry, and worn than the real one sitting inside the professor's office.
Still, this would make a great bonfire.
"Incendio," Fletcher ordered lazily, flicking his wand at the desk and then taking a quick step backward as the large piece of furniture went up in flames. AWESOMEEEEE.

The young man let himself laugh at that, just a little. Sensei. He was... er... a bit underqualified for that. Just a little. Watching as the two combined their fires, he moved back to where he'd been previously, and had just settled on the ground again when...
"Fletcher...?" the muttering was more to himself than anyone else, but his eyes had turned to him as he looked around at the other students, just in time to see him conjure a desk.
Why had he-
...
O_O!!!!!!
WHAT WAS HE DOING??? Raiden's jaw dropped in utter confusion as the desk went up in flames, and he remained where he was on the cold ground. What... what even?! Was he insane? The prefect hurriedly pushed himself to his feet again, his immediate concern being making sure that the younger students were nowhere near the flaming furniture.
"Fletcher are you mad?! Put it out!" Big desk equalled big fire, after all.
Vienna made an X in the air with her wand and said "Focalia" nothing happened the first time round but she had expected that. Trying again "Focalia" She was amazed when a pile of wood was laying on the ground near her. Knowing her next task was to light the pile on fire she was just about to when all of a sudden she saw one of the older students light up an entire desk looking extremely pleased with himself about it.
Vienna moved away taking her pile of wood with her so she could cast the incendio charm.
"Incendio" she called and nothing happened not even a puff of smoke after the third time she was becoming increasingly frustrated and about to give up
Hopefully none of the students would find themselves experiencing tendencies toward pyromania.
...enter Fletcher.
Kellen couldn't help but send a look in the boy's direction. Really? Really, Fletcher? Conjuring up a crappy old desk to set on fire? Was the Hufflepuff trying to prove a point about something, or was he just completely unable to participate in something without multiple people paying attention to him?
Hmm, probably.
But it appeared Raiden was gearing up for full Prefect Mode, so after he'd put his correctly sized fire out and vanished the wood, Kellen just... stood and watched. And waited for Kingsley to notice. Since that was quite obviously what Fletcher wanted.

Wooooot! Professor said she could burn the wood!
Mwahahahahahaha! Erm..right.
Clearing her throat, Evelyn glanced around before looking at the two wood pieces on the ground in front of her. This was completely different than Potions class. She didn't have to make a small little flame. She had to make sure the wood was dry enough to BURN. Besides, they were outside, no where near something that could catch on fire and burn the whole grounds down.
Sorta.
"Incendio." she said, letting the flame fly towards the wood. It was...burning! It was BURNING! YES! IT-...

For a moment there, Treyen thought that his unattended fire had gone wrong, so he started to walk towards it only to find out that his fire was okay, still burning and all. Good.
His eyes widened, though, at the most amazing demonstration ever!
Of course, it had to be Sir Awesome the one to do so.
"WOW" he said, eyes still widened, but their look was one of amazement. Lookit those flames! Sooooo pretty! And high! "Wicked!" yes, that was all he said, eyes still on the burning desk. Haha.

Things had been going quite well... but Merlin's flaming pants, what was that boy thinking?
Or not, as the case may be.
Flicking his wand forcefully, a torrent of water doused the desk. Another swipe, and the smoldering, sopping mess vanished.
"Everyone put out your fires and vanish your wood. Class is dismissed."
He made his way into the group of students, ready to extinguish any fires. "Your homework will be, in part, to practice all the spells mentioned today as you see fit. Whether that means you outfit a snowman or create new a new set of winter wear or roast marshmallows, find ways to use them."
He looked over at the melted snow near where the bonfire has been. "Those of you who are not proficient with incendio.. or are unable to control yourself... are restricted to practicing that spell in the Transfiguration practice room I will be opening."
He paused, before adding, "Mister Fletcher, a word, please."

Extinguish the pretty flames? But he couldn't kill them! How could someone be so evil as to kill flames? Oh, yes, the fire needed to be done with soonish. His mouth was open, as he watched in disbelief how Professor Kingsley destroyed Fletcher's work. No, no drama there, right?
With a very disappointed look on his face, Treyen flicked his wand and said "Aguamenti" before seeing the water put a stopper on...fire. Bye-bye flames. And then he Evanesco'ed the wet wood off the ground. There. He was done.
"Great lesson, Professor, see you soon!" he said, taking his bag along with him as he...left.

"Yeah." Jenny heard Kurumi's stomach grumble again. She wished she didn't have to hear that noise again; it reminded her too much of her own hunger as well.
Just then, the professor said that class was over. What? Already? Maybe he had to end it early because that one Hufflepuff guy conjured something that looked like the Professor's desk?
Sadly, Jenny pointed her wand at the fire she and Kurumi just made. "Aguamenti." It took a while but eventually the flames died down. Then she waved her wand to make the used wood vanish.
"Thanks for the lesson, Professor!" Jenny said as she gathered her blanket and other things. Then she tried to wave goodbye to Raiden (was he even looking?) and turned to Kurumi as she headed back to the castle. "Do you want to roast marshmallows later?"

Kurumi helped with the Aguamenti portion. They were done already? No dangerous maze where they had to transgifure things to keep them warm or they would turn into ice cubes? While it came as a kind of relief, she was glad that she wouldn't be going back to the dorms with frostbite.
"Sure," she smiled picking up her things. "Let's just try not to PINGO them any strange flavors."

Dianna put out her flame and saw that she had also been burning some part of grass. Accidentally of course. *whistle*
"Great Lesson Professor Kingsley!" Dianna said as she got all her belongings and marched back towards the castle.

Shooting a crooked grin at Treyen, who obviously was enjoying Fletcher's handiwork as much as he was himself, Fletch put out his wand to calm Raiden.
"All right, all right," he grumbled, giving the prefect dirty looks. "It was just for prac---"

"---tice," Fletcher finished his sentence with a small open-mouthed "o" expression. Whups. Ya caught me, professor.
Slowly edging away from the now-soggy desk, Fletcher hid his hands behind his back. Oh, class dismissed. That's great. He edged away even farther but halted on the spot when Kingsley called him out.
"Er... yes sir," he said, nodding slowly and waiting for the rest of their classmates to leave. Maybe the 'word' he wanted to say would just be 'awesome,' followed by 'that was awesome. Good work. I'm impressed.' Maybe????!

Jenny stopped. She immediately almost threw up as her thoughts went back to the treehouse, where the pair of them Pingo'd a whole bunch of stuff food flavors. That was quite unenjoyable.
"Oh yeah, can't forget about that." Jenny nodded solemnly.
'Just for practise'. Right. Raiden's lips pressed into a thin line, fingers twitching at his side as he waited for Fletcher to put it out. Others had managed to practise just fine without conjuring furniture to light aflame.
Thankfully, the professor put it out before Raiden had to, and before Fletcher had any more of a chance to protest that it was 'only practise'. Shoving his hands into his pockets, he looked around at the other students before taking a few steps toward the castle.
"Great class, sir," he called in the professor's direction. It had been; they'd had fire and nobody had lit themselves up or anything. That was a triumph in itself. The young man paused, to make sure that nobody would need help before he went back to the castle.
Or to make sure that Fletcher wouldn't be conjuring any more furniture to light on fire. Either way.
