Excitement fills the frigid winter air as the start of the Third Task looms near.

Did you bring a heavy winter coat or cloak? Did you remember to wear your thick House scarf, a pair of mittens and even a hat to keep your head warm? Did you remember to bring loud noise-making devices and banners to hoist in the air?

Cheering on the champions might keep you warm, but once they've entered the strange circular maze, there isn't much else to do than wait and hope that whatever the champions are facing isn't as bad as what you're imagining.

The snow-topped hedges are impenetrable, both to sight and to sound. A black wall just beyond the few flickering torches that fill the starting area with uncertain light, they are moving slightly in the wintry breeze and rustling faintly. As there is nothing to see, there is nothing to hear.

NOTHING.

And which is worse? Complete silence that leaves the champions to an uncertain fate – or loud noises of a struggle? But there is one lingering doubt hidden in the back of your mind that you and no one else dares to speak - will this be the task where red wand sparks will light up the sky because a champion is in serious distress and will they make it out . . . alive?

While waiting for the first champion to emerge from the maze, there is not much else to do than sit tight, stay warm, say a few cheers, do the wave, and catch up on the latest gossip.

"I loooove hot chocolate", she told her friend.

Kurumi poured Fee a cup of hot chocolate with one of the extra cups she had brought and handed it to her. She looked at Fee's expression and was not convinced that she was fine. This probably wasn't the time and place to talk about super serious things, especially when the champions were risking life and limb out there.

Kurumi bowed her head to the new girl. She had seen her around, but never actually talk with her. Kurumi nodded as the events with the clabbert came to a close and the champions moved on. She had to admit, she was a little jealous that they were getting up close and personal with so many different magical creatures and plants during this tournament.

"Maybe I should enter if this happens again while I am at Hogwarts...." Kurumi whispered thinking aloud. "Oh? What? Um...me too..." she stammered trying to cover her tracks. She had never talked to the Beauxbatons student, but the two Hogwarts' champions had helped her out during class...so she was secretly rooting for them.

She couldn't believe she was late! Huffing and puffing a little, Melanie raced up the stands. As she came to a stop near the top, she clutched at her scarf to prevent the wind from blowing it away, tying the yellow garment nice and snug around her neck. Despite the fact that she was all decked out in her winter clothes she was still shivering. Melanie knew it was cold, but she didn't think it would be this cold. In all honesty, she didn’t mind too much though... She could see!

Melanie could see what was going on and she was happy about it! Admittedly, a pair of omnioculars would be nice, but up at the top of the stands she had a bird's-eye view of what was going on. She took a seat and looked out at the field, leaning forward and resting her elbows on her knees and her head on her hands. She could make out a full grown clabbert going after the champions… It didn’t look too dangerous. It did look relatively repulsive though, Melanie noted, wrinkling her nose slightly.

She hoped she didn’t miss much... The girl considered asking someone in the stands what happened thus far.

He asked, resisting the urge to smack himself over the head to get rid of the images floating around inside. Mockingly floating around inside.

"It really has just started." Hecate said from behind the two. "Hello Kimber, Jeremy." She said with her beater's bat in hand... She was just angry... and felt like bringing it... it felt good to wield it.

Most people probably wouldn't think a timid and shy girl like her could do well in the tournament, let alone have the courage to put her name in the Goblet of Fire. "I look at people like Raiden and think how amazing they are...inspiring even. I want to be able to do that too...make people feel inspired..."

Fee wouldnt be brave enough to do it, she was too scared. But there was a reason for Kurumi to be sorted int o Gryffindor. Showed clearly.

"Yees Raiden is really cool and he manages everything well", she said,"but remember he is 6 years older. You never know how you will be by then. You are a great person dont worry and i guess theere will be a lot people inspired by you. If there arent already."

Kurumi was really kind and sweet, Fee could imagine that next term she would inspire some firsties mucho.

Suddenly the hedgerows grow thick and dark, blocking all view of the champions and the task on the converted pitch. What fate awaits our champions as they proceed on the constantly changing pathway?

Fifteen minutes later....

The hedgerows grow shorter and shorter to reveal an eerie scene on the pitch. The low-lying fog obscures the path and you notice stepping stones sticking out of what appears to be water. Who will be the first to proceed across the pond?

Jenny turned back to the maze; she gasped as the hedges suddenly disappeared again, revealing some kind of body of water with stepping stones. For some reason, they don't look safe. What if they stepped on a trap and crocodiles came clashing on them, or even worse, slipped into the water only to be caught by some evil underground creature? She tried not to give it a second thought as she bit into her cookie.

Alice was a bit disappointed to see the hedgerows getting thicker and thicker, until it was basically like being back in the first and second task. Nothing to stare at but a wall from nature. Alice let out a small, sigh, rubbing her hands together again to try and stay warm.

It was about fifteen minutes later, although it felt much longer by her standards, that the wall thinned out and Alice could see what looked like stepping stones...resting on water.

Alice turned towards Lexi. "I guess they're going to come out that way, huh?" Alice asked, before focusing her eyes back on the rocks. The end was near...

Amber frowned, letting the vuvuzela fall to her side. Why were the hedges closing again? Stupid magic, not letting her see Raiden and Fletcher beat Noel's butt. What? Was it horrible that she wanted her school to win? Of course not.

Suddenly, Amber heard the annoying wail of yet another vuvuzela and turned to see Sal. She grinned, waving at him before sitting back down. Hmm... maybe she could come up with another cheer soon?

Then as suddenly as they had disappeared, the hedges grew thin and allowed the spectators to watch the real action yet again. Maybe this time they'd stay.

Amber craned her neck and saw what looked like a pond and some stepping stones. She tried to think of a good cheer, but nothing was coming to mind. Oh well, she'd come up with something sooner or later.

Salander waved his vuvuzela at Amber then nodded heartily at Alice "Yeah! And it was a good start" the lad grinned. "Its awesome that they know what to do." Despite that thing he noticed between Raiden and Fletcher, he was glad that none of them lost their heads when faced with the swinging clabbert, although Salander was more anxious about the bowtruckles scattered about. He still didnt like anything that resembled a piece of wood moving on its own.

He hollered in disappointment when the hedges closed back up. Just as he lifted vuvuzela for another annoying blast he accidentally hit it behind his leg, sending the the trumpet flying out of his hand and rolled down the benches. "Nutz!" he muttered as he went after it.

By the time he managed to retrieved it and got back to his seat, the hedges opened back up to reveal a foggy, swampy sight. "Whoah... talk about Black Lagoons..." the lad muttered. Then His eyes widened in alarm as he totally recognized the Dugbog, "Hit it! Hit it! Yeah!!!" he yelled as Raiden and Fletcher dealt it their blows.

Then the lad grew silent at the next sight, the Flying Professor's declaration hung heavily in the air. A Kappa? "Dude that is totally the Creature from the Black Lagoon! Just look at it!" he muttered, his eyes unblinking. He didnt like the sight of the Champions lined up in the middle of the swampy marsh just within arm's reach of the Kappa-Creature thing.

He watched the entire scene unfold as the Champions dealt with this challenge. Young Alice's words echoed in his head, Intense? Nail-bitingly yeah!

Kurumi couldn't even respond to Jenny as she saw the Hufflepuff boy bowing. Things got worse when she head their flying professor yell out Kappa. "JENNY!" Kurumi shrieked in fear grabbing her friend's arm. "Kappa are really scary...and they eat small children!" She jumped to her feet and yelled down at the champions...who probably couldn't hear her anyway.

"You need to write your name on a cucumber and throw it into the pond!

Her brothers had often scared her with stories when she was little about them. How they attack horses, cattle, and humans, usually dragging its prey into the water...then it feeds on their blood, or drains their life force, or pulls out their livers through their anuses, or sucks out their entrails, leaving nothing behind except a hollow gourd. She was afraid to go near water for two years after Takashi had told her a story of a Kappa pulling little children into the water and drowning them.

"Fire! Fire is also good! Kappa are afraid of fire!"

Stopping for a moment, she realized that most of this may not be true about actual Kappa...maybe they were just Japanese folktales that she had grown up hearing...tehehe...oops...

Vindictus ignored the chattering around him. The action had moved on. "FLETCHER AND NOEL ARE FIGHTING!" he shouted and pointed at the pitch.

Sure enough, the two champions were fighting over a . . . rooster.

Kurumi heard Professor Vindictus yell that two of the champions were fighting with each other over...a rooster? Did the task require that they roast the bird or something? Was there only one to go around? Why was there a rooster and a Kappa? Kurumi was so confused

She turned away from Destiny, who was distracting her from the task. Who knows what she had...where they fighting.....over a rooster?

Why on earth were they fighting each other over a rooster?

She knew it wasnt right to keep quiet about what was bugging her but she didnt want to ruin the third task by crying and explaining her probelms.Once again...

Freya heard Professor Vinductus shouted Kappa, she turned her gaze to the third task and saw a pond. Hmm..That definitely look like Kappa. Ohhh..this task is going to be really interesting. Wonder what creatures the have to face next? Then she heard another shouted from Professor Vindictus that Fletcher and Noel are fighting. She looked to the champions and saw they indeed fighting over a roster? Is the roster really that important?

Breathing out a sigh he didnt realize he was holding, the Slytherin lad was relieved when the Champions moved on from the marshes. He watched as the Trio entered a lighted clearing, frowned curiously at a gnome and smiled at the adorable crup. Then the most curious thing happened... "Is Fletcher and Noel fighting over that rooster?" he muttered, watching the scene unfold, and getting even more bizarre when Fletcher disarmed Noel and pocketed the Frenchlad's wand.... "What is going on?!?" His scowl deepened when he read the body language between the GlitterPuff and the Beauxbaton. He's been in enough fights himself to know what was coming if the two yoyos didnt cool off stat.

And it didnt escape his notice that the Slytehrin Prefect was distancing himself from the others. Well if one Hogwarts Champion was gonna get himself into a smack down with the French dude then the other should be mindful that he still has the hopes of the entire school to carry on his shoulders.

Which truthfully wasnt such a bad strategy.

What was bad was when Fletcher finally did get ahold of the bird he started behaving like a mutated halfling. Eh maybe he wasnt quite over that shrinking potion.

Salander watched as the situation gradually improved as Noel got his wand back from Raiden. Curiously, he kept his eye on the motionless poultry as the surroundings started to change. "Theres something important about that bird, enough for Fletcher to lose his head over it." And if he knew his buddy well enough, he wasnt the type of guy who would get into scrapes unless it was over something that is of great value.

Can't even speak.. oh no. Rae could not speak. She was watching, staring, barely breathing. Even if these events were a bit confusing and odd, she anxiety did not go down one bit. When things started changing, The sixteen year old noticed that Fletcher was going first.. WHAT? Why? No! Her head instinctively turned away to where Sal's shoulder was. It wasn't her intent, he just happened to be sitting next to her when she couldn't watch. "Just tell me what happens." Because watching was no longer an option either. Hopefully Sal would just keep her filled in..

How they attack horses, cattle, and humans, usually dragging its prey into the water...then it feeds on their blood, or drains their life force, or pulls out their livers through their anuses, or sucks out their entrails, leaving nothing behind except a hollow gourd. She was afraid to go near water for two years after Takashi had told her a story of a Kappa pulling little children into the water and drowning them.

"Fire! Fire is also good! Kappa are afraid of fire!"

Stopping for a moment, she realized that most of this may not be true about actual Kappa...maybe they were just Japanese folktales that she had grown up hearing...tehehe...oops...

Jenny almost jumped as Kurumi suddenly grabbed her arm, spilling more hot chocolate into her already dirty robes. She can't go back to the castle with chocolate stains on her clothes! (Not that she completely freaks out about the dirtyness, it's just plain weird.) Jenny tried to think of a spell. But she couldn't because the word "Kappa" was intriguing to her. What does it mean?

Then Jenny heard someone yell that there are two champions fighting, one of them that weird Fletcher boy. Really? As in dueling or some fight over some stupid trivial thing?

It seemed as though the rooster fight was over and after a wand or two was thrown, the champions began to look less like 5-year-olds fighting over a cupcake and more like the 7th years that they were...ish.

Kurumi calmed down as it seemed the soul sucking Kappa, or whatever it was, had gone away for the moment. She sat herself back down on the benches and noticed that -oops- Jenny was covered in chocolate spots. Hopefully she hadn't burned herself with the hot chocolate. "Scourgify!" she said pointing her wand at all the spots on Jenn'y clothing. That should take out the stains. "Maybe that rooster lays golden eggs..." Now that would be a very special rooster.
