In an area on the grounds close to the Quidditch pitch, Professor Carlton has designed a small, circular racetrack. It's temporary, of course, and will quickly be replaced by magic as soon as the lesson is over. For now, though, it exists for the sole purpose of the wooden horseback racing that is about to begin.
"Find a place at the start line," Professor Carlton instructed, using her wand to gesture toward a white line stretching from the left side of the track to the right. "We'll get started in just a moment--as soon as everyone has had a chance to get a wooden horse, dress up in their western attire, and get to the starting point. I'll explain more directions in just a bit."

Kurumi hopped along still holding onto the reins of her still GIANT horse getting closer and closer to the finish line. While it had been fun using charms and racing with her other classmates, Kurumi was going to be glad when this was all over. She peered over Murasaki's head and saw that the finish line was only a few feet away now. "Oh thank you thank you," she cried as she crossed the finish line. The wind suddenly stopped and she now found herself dangling in the air by the reins. She took out her wand and pointed it at Murasaki's head. "Reducio!" she cried with tears in her eyes as her feet slowly began to get closer to the ground.

Or..
The Professor has stopped them and conjured a wind to try to get things yet more harder exciting. Louisa held on to her stick-horse with one hand and started pulling off as many as she could of feathers before the wind could get any stronger. Fast she worked but she wasn't able to look feather-free enough because she started losing balance on her stick-horse so she stuck to her feathers costume with a roll of her eyes.
Now with both hands hugging the stick-horse tightly she zoomed away to find Vashti's back right in front of her. "VASHTI!" She called over the wind which made her movement slower.
So far the Shield Charm had been incredibly helpful in this class - well not just this class, but this entire term. Handy little spell, it was. Using the time she had while the charm was still active, Vashti tried to wipe more of the shaving cream and feathers off her and tried to make Secretariat goes faster so she could finish this race.
Only problem was that the shield went away faster from her lack of concentration and, though the feathers had graciously stopped, another obstacle soon came up. And no, it wasn't the music (though that was a distraction and basically an obstacle because of that). A strong gust of wind began blowing, and Vashti felt as if she were slowing down (though she hadn't done anything of the sort) and soon came to a standstill.
Oh come ON.
At least the wind was causing most of the shaving cream and feathers to blow off, but now she was stuck. But she was a Quidditch player - she'd played in a storm before. This wind shouldn't be a problem, right? But it kinda was. Secretariat wasn't a broom and she wasn't over a hundred feet in the air and going a hundred miles an hour. So yeah, this was a bit more difficult.
While considering using the handy little Shield Charm once more, Vashti heard her name being yelled again. She whipped her head around and though her hair was flying in her face from the wind, she caught sight of the girl's face and recognized her immediately. "LOUISA!" she called back before turning her head back around to cast, "Protego!" The Shield Charm was back, and even though it wasn't helping her speed as much as she'd hoped, she was at least moving again. It was only a matter of time before she hit the finish line, right?

Edmond could feel a headache creeping up. Great. Just great. He held on tighter to Taco. He had to produce a successful Protego Totalus sooner or later. Ed knew that he would fall, his arms and shoulders were tired. Ed just wanted to finish. He held out his was and said with all the might he had, "Protego Totalum!"and there it was. A stronger shield. He sighed in relief as he passed the fifth lap. He did it! Ed finally finished!

Louisa was struggling with her stick-horse but being behind Vashti helped a bit and she could fight the wind more than she hoped. Yay! Vashti recognized her. "Hey Vashti, could I keep floating behind you? I'm not sure that I can cast that Shielding Charm yet.. I haven't tried before." She yelled over the wind to the girl before her.
Louisa's hands got loosened a bit all of a sudden! Maybe because the girl was exhausted after this athletic class that she didn't get used to yet.
BANG!
Louisa partly fell off the horse-stick but her hand was still clutched to the end of the stick-horse which was a funny scene. From the outside it looked like the stick-horse dragged her slowly against the wind while in fact she was still controling it by her wand-hand.
"I won't let go just now we're near the end!" She bellowed to the stick-horse as if it was getting rid of her. Her feet started to ache from being scratched by the ground but she insisted.
Louisa gathered her strength and tried to shift herself but she failed and fell off completely with her stick-horse on top of her body. She grunted mildly as she got up quickly, levitated it to the level she wanted and "Locomotor Stick-horse!" And followed Vashti as quickly as she could once again. Her legs and whole body aches from the fall but she could feel the challenge supplying her of strength.
Carpe Diem: Make today extraordinary! WOOT WOOT! GRYFFINDOR!!
Sophia leaned forward on her horse, and casted "Protego!" to protect herself from the wind. She leaned even more forward and she crossed the finish line. She landed on the ground and stood, waiting for instructions from the Professor.

Kurumi's feet were now able to touch the ground and she gladly dismounted her horse. She patted it on the horse on the head. "Thanks for the...err...exciting ride," she smiled nervously. Who knew that 5 times around a seemingly harmless track could be so crazy. Kurumi sighed as she crumbled to the ground beside her still levitating horse. Her arms were very sore from holding on for so long. She looked up from her position on the ground to wait and see what the professor would say next. Maybe she would bring them ice cream too...

Making sure to keep most of her concentration on the shield, Vashti glanced behind her once more as her first year friend called to her once more. She nodded. "Yeah, that's fine!" she said as loudly as she could. A thought occurred to her then. Perhaps she could cast the Shield Charm for Louisa? That wouldn't be considered cheating or anything, would it? Just helping out a fellow student so she didn't get-
MERLIN'S BEARD. One moment Louisa was on her stick horsey, the next she was flung off and holding on by only one hand. "LOUISA! Are you-" Vashti started, but then the little first year was completely on the ground, her stick horsey right there with her. The third year purposely slowed herself down a bit, trying to get to her friend and calling her name again, but then, within the next moment, the girl was on her feet, using the charms from the beginning of class, and hopping on once more.
"Are you okay?!" she called and only then realized that her shield was gone again and she was losing speed and moving backwards quite fast. Nearly losing her balance as she did so, Vashti turned forward once more and cast, "Protego!" Once again the wind was blocked from her face and she could move forward once more. Merlin, was this frustrating.

Apparently mispronouncing his incantation as 'wingardium lemmingosa' had done something weird to the spell, and the horse began acting... well, like a lemming! It began to follow every last move of Marie's flight path as though the pony was chasing hers. Combined with the bucking and jerking, Eli's stick pony (and Eli himself) kept nudging into her and bumping her again and again.
Bump! Crash! Bam! It was out of control! The head of Eli's pony knocked into her, then zoomed forward a little and slammed him into her right side.
Greaaaat. She was going to kill him.
And then, to make matters worse, the other she-snake had popped one of the balloons right above him. It splattered down onto his purple head like the world's biggest splat of bird guano, coating him liberally in white shaving foam and obscuring his vision.
"Ugh!" he cried out, letting the reins of his stick-pony go with one hand to wipe the foam from his face with his sleeve. "You did that on PURPOSE, you--"
The insult was lost as he ran headlong into a flurry of feathers. They got into his mouth and he spat them out, disgusted by the flavor of feather and foam.
BAM! He crashed into Marie again, this time right into her backside.
Dead boy. He was a dead boy.
"Mr. Jarod!" Lexi exclaimed, as she floated closer to him on the end of her umbrella. She raised her wand to him and casted a spell that caused him to come to a sudden halt. Luckily, she'd casted so skillfully that the sudden change in pace didn't knock the poor boy off his horse. "You'll fly away from Miss Salazar from this point forward or else you'll risk losing the points gained from this lesson." Her eyes traveled from Eli to Marie and back again. "You may continue, Mr. Jarod--away from Miss Salazar and away from any mischief. I'm watching..."

The Impediment spell wasn't the best, but at least it had blocked the worst of the wind for a few minutes. Enough to let Grayson guide Lily forward several feet, her determination rising every inch she got closer to the finish line. Unfortunately, after that few minutes, the spell faded and she was suddenly smack in the middle of the windstorm. Returning to her iron grip on the stick, she forced herself to keep trying to move forward. She felt like she was getting pushed back three inches to every inch she made it forward, but her determination wasn't failing. She also, sadly, wasn't about to let go of Lily for even the second it would take her to cast another Impediment spell. She'd just have to hope her shield charm worked well enough.
Glancing around as she heard Professor Carlton speaking to someone else, she almost lost her momentum for a second. But she still didn't see her ferret on the professor, and as long as the boy didn't lose points she didn't want to stop now. Getting hurt would be bad, and if she let the wind win she knew she'd get hurt. She just needed to finish the race, and then she could worry about everything else again. So back to fighting against the wind. When she finally got past it, she almost fell off Lily in surprise at the lack of pressure. But, with another look back to make sure nobody had seen her stutter, she continued forward and past the finish line. Finally, she thought, before jumping headlong off the wooden horse and pulling her wand out. "Finite," she cast, letting the horse fall to the ground. "Sorry Lily," she said then, reaching forward and carefully picking the horse up. At least it didn't look very damaged.

Marie was NOT happy here!
Snakefaced FREAK!
Really!?
What was the problem of this purple haired freak... was he trying to get himself killed... or punched in the nose because really, Marie WOULD do it, she would knock him off his broom and punch him in the nose if he banged into her one more time... or called her a freak. "That's Miss She-Snake to you. The only freak I see here is you!"
Oomph! He had done it again... he slammed into her. "Get the hell away from me!" she yelled at him as she pushed him away. Pulling up on her broom horse she was about to push him to the ground when he did it again. He ran right into her backside. That did it, this boy was going DOWN!
Pulling her wand out she was about to hex the boy into next month when all of a sudden...

Professor Carlton was there.
HA!
HA!HA!
He was gonna get it now. "Yeah, stay away from me." Oh wait, he would lose points if he kept bothering her. Hmm, maybe he should keep flying near her, let him lose all kinds of points.
Right, she had a race to finish, WITHOUT him ramming into her. Leaving him there to be told off by the professor Marie concentrated on that finish line. Even though the wind was still blowing she was determined to get the hell away from that maniac. Head down she raced across the finish line and left purple in her dust.
If that boy came hear her ever again he was going to be sorry. He wouldn't always have a professor near to protect him. or threaten to take points away.
Jimbo will set his turtle loose on you. { The Farley } "That's trademarked, don't use it."
As he finished the race, he quickly got off the stick horse and threw it to the ground in a bit of an angry manner. He was quite a sight. Covered in shaving cream with a feather here and there, his hair was sticking out in a manner that obviously said he'd just been hit by a strong wind. Except that it was stuck in that position. Because of the shaving cream. So he looked rather silly, really.
And he was wearing bright pink. With stirrups. Although his pink hat was nowhere to be seen. He had his arms crossed and he wore a frown upon his face. If it hadn't been for the feathers, he would have enjoyed this class more. But there were feathers. And annoying music. And almost EVERYBODY looked like a bird. But Jimbo hadn't noticed that just yet. He was still trying to calm down and get the image of a feather covered mutant bird Salander out of his head.
But when he finally managed to somewhat blur that image, he looked up...and FREAKED OUT once more. He was SURROUNDED. SURROUNDED by birds. They were EVERYWHERE. And there was no escape.
He screamed.
Dropping himself to the ground he curled into the fetal position.
"Please don't hurt me, don't hurt me, please! Scary mutant birds out to get me!" he cried.

...then, just like that, the music that had been playing over and over and over came to a sudden end. All balloons and feathers fluttered harmlessly to the ground, and the wind slowed to normal conditions. Lexi blew a loud whistle then said, "The race has come to an end! Congratulations to all those who were able to finish...and great job to everyone," she announced. She lowered her umbrella then casted Finite as she gracefully landed back on the ground.
"Please cast Finite and lower yourself to the ground. Remember to slow down first, or else you'll likely suffer from a crash landing," she advised. "Please return your wooden horses to the boxes on the far end of the field and, if you borrowed western attire from me, please return those to the boxes, as well. Check the announcement board in the common rooms and outside my office! Homework will be posted there!"
"Miss Kelly?" she said, motioning for the Ravenclaw girl to come see her before she left. Lexi assumed ickle Draco was missing his mum right about now.
..."Mr. Farley? Mr. Farley, are you alright?" she said, finally noticing a Slytherin boy curled into a fetal position on the ground.

Like the giant cockatoo flying in the wind, Salander held onto his wooden steed for dear life as it lay lodged between the racetrack fence. He tried to pull himself back closer to the stick horse when....
SNAP!
....and just as his luck would have it, the lodged part of the stick broke.
"AAHHH!!!" he yelped as he rolled backwards on the ground, the wind blowing him over like some kind of be-feathered tumbleweed. Out of sheer panic he slammed the broken shaft his horse into the soil and held onto it tightly, as he struggled to point his wand ahead of him and urgently cast " Protego!" The shield formed just enough to cover himself, granting him momentary reprieve. He lay on the ground and looked up, and saw that he was still a few more feet from the finish line. I'm almost there. Cant stop now!
He gritted his teeth and recast "Protego!". He then lifted his stick horse from the soil and plunged the shaft back down a little further forward, pulling himself towards it. With the protego charm shielding himself from the brunt of the tempest, Salander half crouched, half pulled his way towards the finish line.
He lay sprawled on the ground for a few minutes, trying to catch his breath. He could hear Professor Poppins Carlton giving out instructions. He raised a weary, slightly be-feathered arm and said "Will do Professor.... " he warbled.

Daisy had just crossed the finish line when Professor carlton called it the end. She waved her wand and said "Finite." She then quickly changed her clothes and replaced the westren ones where they belong along with the horse. "That was a great lesson Professor but next time can we do something less messy?"

Kurumi did as the professor instructed and said good bye to Murasaki. While it had been fun - minus the whole wind section - she hoped that she would not be seeing the horse anytime soon. "Thank you for today's lesson, Professor," Kurumi smiled and bowed deeply. She waved good bye and hurried off to start on her homework.

Marie heard Professor Carlton blow a whistle letting them know class was over. Merlin, it was like Vindictus was there with them. Pulling up to slow down she slowly made her way towards the ground... which was only about five feet below her. Once close enough to the ground she jumped off the horse. "Finite!" she said as she pointed her wand at the horsestick.
Taking the now not flying horse back to the box she made sure to glare daggers at the boy who better run every time he sees her and he is alone. Oh yeah, she was going to make his life a living hell for the rest of his days at Hogwarts. "Thanks for the... interesting lesson professor... and for getting clown boy away from me." Yeah, with that purple hair he definitely looked like a clown to her.
Emmy slowly flew across the finish line, as the professor blew her whistle.
She descended, and said "Finite." pointing her wand at her hobby horse.
Hopping off, she patted her steed, saying, "Well done, GeeGee - good job!"
Walking up to Professor Carlton, she said "That was a great lesson, thanks professor!"

Lily in hand, Grayson looked around for a moment, trying to figure out what they were supposed to do now that they'd finished and landed their horses. It seemed only a handful of them had managed to really get past the wind, which made her feel a little accomplished. But now that she'd finished, she also was losing most of her determination to finish. Which made her worry over Draco wherever he was sneak back into the front of her mind. But she turned as she heard a whistle blow, and nodded as they were told to return the horses to the boxes. That made sense, and she wondered why she hadn't figured that out on her own.
Then she heard, among the other things Professor Carlton was saying, her name, and she stopped halfway to the boxes. The professor wanted to see her. Maybe that means she's going to keep her promise, she thought. But she figured the professor would want her to bring Lily back first, so she continued on her way to the boxes and carefully set the imitation palomino into its box. "Bye Lily," she said, giving the head a little pat. Then she turned and headed back to where Professor Carlton was. Glancing at the Slytherin she was talking to. Isn't that the boy who tried to sneak past the Age Line?, Grayson thought, before she turned her attention back to the professor. "Professor?"

...then, just like that, the music that had been playing over and over and over came to a sudden end.

" Rex slowed down on his horse. " Rex said "Finite' and landed easily. " Miss Carlton, you told me to remind yo that I am staying adter class" Rex told her. " Of course, it is for a good thing " Rex said to the professor. " You said to make sure I told you that I am going to help you clean up" Rex explained to Miss Carlton.

She didn't feel like a failure. Sure she hadn't finished, but she HAD FUUUUUN! And she gained a new bff that she was going to keep f-- WHAT?!
Casting a quick finite after pulling Porcelain to an immediate stop, Lorelai gripped the wooden horse and hurried over to Professor Carlton. "Do I haaaaave to give Porcelain back? I gave her wings and glitter... And she's my new best friend.... Please Professor?" Here a pout, there a pout, everywhere a Lori pout.
One hand sat stroking Porcelain's head, and the other held the wooden stick close to herself. Porcelain wasn't going NOWHEREEEE!
"Thanks for the fun lesson though, Professor." We had fun playing dress up like three year olds. It was FUN.
Patroclus and NeighNeigh had to get a wriggle on, they were close to finishing.....
But as Professor Carlton began to talk Patroclus knew it was all over. "Finite!" he muttered, whilst still in the air, landing in an acrobatic roll, as the magic left the horse.
"Thanks for a great lesson Professor," the boy smiled, dusting the dirty and shaving cream off his jeans. "I wish we could ride these between classes." Patroclus could see the benefit of having a hovering horse to whisk him to classes......sleep ins, long lunches, the pluses were endless.
Returning NeighNeigh, was harder then the boy had thought it would be, he was instantly remided of parting from Mr Feathers back in Transfiguration last year.

Louisa smiled up at Vashti as she shouted, "I'm fine...thanks for letting me behind y--." But she was interrrupted by the Professor's voice. Everyone went silence as she spoke, and they obeyed... well most of them did.
"Finite!" She casted and dropped on the floor on her butt. She was too tired to stand up immediately so she heard what the homework was while sitting there with the stick-horse in her lap.
"That should be fun." Jumping up and standing next to Vashti as soon as the Professor was done. She held her stick-horse and walked over to the box on the far end of the field glancing around to see if Vashti was still with her.
Eli gasped. HE was in trouble for this? Seriously? "But perfessor-- I'm having trouble...." The broom jerked and bounced off the turf again, barely missing Marie... Thank goodness because she had her WAND pointed at him.

Eli managed to jump-fall off his own stickpony and stormed over to the professor, just in time to hear this. "Clown boy? Seriously? Perfessor, she's a BULLY. I wasn't doing anything wrong; it's not MY fault I my stickhorse kept jamming up into hers; the charm went wrong and I didn't know what to DO. Believe me, I didn't want to crash into her, I don't want anything to DO with her! And Professor Carlton, she's always bullying me and she was gonna hex me, did you see? She had her wand pointed at me and everything, and last year she and her thug snake friends beat me up in the corridors and she's got it out for me. Listen to her even name calling me right in front of you if you don't believe me. She's a mean snake bully!" he glared at Marie defiantly. Oh, she was gonna get in trouble for all her meanness now! Professor Dimples would totally make her pay!
Sarah had just about made it through the finishing line for the fourth time, when Professor Carlton called a halt to proceedings. So she wasn't going to get a fifth and finish the race then? Phooey.
Pulling the reins of Winston in, Sarah slowed him down to an almost stop and prepared herself to land. "Finite!" she said, wand pointed at the horses head. With a thump, she hit the ground and cradled the horse in her arms. "Imma miss you, Winston, you did good," she sniffed, slowly walking over to the box where they had to put them back.
"Great lesson, Professor. Thanks!" Calling out over her shoulder as she went, Sarah gave the woman a smile and placed Winston in the box with the others. Now just to line dance her way back to the castle.

"Oh, yes! Miss Kelly...your ferret," she said, pulling a still-sleeping Draco from her little black bag. She pet the ferret one good time then placed him back in his mum's arms. "Adorable little fellow. Thanks for letting me hold him! If you ever decide to get rid of him, which I doubt you will, but if you do, you know where to find me." She gave Grayson a polite smile then turned toward Rex Trigwell.

"Right. Help me, umm...move these boxes back to class, please," she said, gesturing toward the boxes the students were returning their western attire and wooden horses to. "If the class is locked, just leave the boxes right outside the door. Thanks, Mr. Trigwell!"
OOC: I've already locked the class thread, so you can just roleplay Rex carrying or levitating the boxes off the racetrack, but you don't need to worry about roleplaying him bringing them back to class.

"Mr. Jarod, that's enough! Same to you, Miss Salazar," she warned, giving each a glance that clearly said enough was enough. "Another word or negative action from either of you, and they'll be detention in the near future. Separate from one another and drop the matter---this instant." She finished with another warning glare before turning and heading off the track.
She'd return later to charm it back to its normal state.
