And yet... there was still a reason. Stern. You. On our list. Yes.

The look on Raiden's face quite suddenly went a bit indecipherable. Stern was being... dodgy. He wasn't stupid, after all, and landing on your back wouldn't cause you to have a black eye.

So Stern didn't want to tell him something.

"What happened." He moved slightly, leaning again to look at the bruise on his friend's face. "Your back suddenly become your eye socket, Stern?"

Sure, migratory body parts explained everything.

"If that happened, I would be concerned on a number of levels," Kellen remarked. "Would I have to walk around shirtless in order to be able to see? I doubt that's allowed in the Hogwarts dress code."

Still, he didn't think distracted musings would turn Raiden off his questioning, so he amended his statement, "I meant, I walked into something and fell on my back. Not my face."

Which was technically true.

"No doubt the professors would be worried about it, but I doubt the majority of the students would be particularly bothered about it." Stern was deflecting.

...oh really. He'd walked into something and then fallen on his back? Raiden couldn't find himself believing that. Because really, the whole 'I fell on my back' part was so irrelevant, and Stern wasn't one to speak in such a way.

"Care to try again, Stern?" He nudged the guy, to try and get him to turn more toward him. "And why didn't you put any bruise paste on it if that's the case?"

"I would be," Kellen muttered. Having a giant eyeball on his back? Creepy.

His nose wrinkled at Raiden's question about the bruise paste, "I did, actually. This is what's left over. It's due for another coating in about an hour." And he was definitely counting the minutes until that hour was up. He didn't really want to walk around with a pseudo-eye patch on his face.

As for the nudges, he sighed and turned back to face Raiden fully. No sense in continuing to be all shifty, now that they were talking about the cause of said shiftiness, "Look, I got it because I was being dumb. Can we talk about something else?"

...he already had?

That was alarming. REALLY alarming. Because any time Raiden had had a bruise from walking into something, it had only taken one coat of bruise paste and a few minutes to clear it up.

One hand reached up and grabbed Kellen's jaw, turning his head slightly so the prefect could get a better look at what remained of the bruise. That... was definitely not an 'I walked into something' bruise. That was more of a 'something very solid hit my face at a high speed' bruise.

"I fail to see how your being dumb would produce that," he murmured, squinting at the mark. "Unless stupidity can suddenly cause sporadic bruising, and I'm pretty sure it can't because I've seen quite a few unintelligent people so far today, and they were all clear."

Either he'd been playing chicken with a bludger, or something had happened.

"How did it happen? Did you go to the nurse or anything about it?"

...apparently they couldn't talk about something else. That was unfortunate, because Kellen didn't particularly like being a snitch. Even about a jerk like Hufflejock Fletcher.

He tugged his chin free of Raiden's hand, "No, I did not go to the nurse. She has a lot more pressing things to deal with than a punch to the face."

There, happy? He'd been punched in the face. Story is told. Ish.

Raiden was about to snap back that he was sure the nurse would welcome such a simple case between all the broken bones and head injuries that so plagued the student body... when Kellen said it.

Someone had hit him?

Someone had punched Kellen Stern in the face?

And had apparently done it rather well if he was still putting bruise paste on it.

"Who was it?" The question was quiet, even. The prefect had gotten very good at keeping his temper in check. Which was a welcome change from previous terms. "What did you supposedly do to make them do that to you?"

His hand lowered slowly before his arms crossed over his chest.

Kellen wasn't especially sure he liked the tone of voice coming out of Raiden. It was too... controlled? Was that the word? Still, he ignored the first question in favour of answering the second, "I'm still not entirely sure. From what I can gather, it was a kind of retaliation, hit-man type thing... from a girl."

That made it sound like a girl had hit him, "I mean, she got the boy to hit me. Which... yeah, talking about the something of the else now?"

Come on, couldn't Raiden see this was a tad embarrassing?

...apparently the punch to the face had affected Stern's brain. Poor Ravenclaw, was he going to now be dumb for the rest of his life now? That was the only reason Raiden could come up with for him possibly even thinking that Raiden would just let this go without a word.

"Well you're not dating anyone that I know of... and you're far from the type who would cheat on a girl anyway, so there's no reason to believe she'd send a guy after you in revenge..." Idly, one hand went to his mouth, and he pressed his thumb against his lip, biting on the nail as he considered what else could have been the reason behind this. "I'll drop it when you tell me, you know. Who did it, Stern. I'm fairly sure the 'why' is stupid as hell, already."

His stomach burned with that vague feeling of anger. One thing that Raiden didn't take well to was his friends being assaulted.

Kellen scrunched his lips to the side, irritated. At what, exactly, he didn't really know. He crossed his arms, "Well if we were dating, we sure aren't any more." Did it count as dating if you'd never actually gone anywhere together?

He'd drop it? Yeah huh, that was doubtful. Still, if they would at least stop talking about it, he guessed... ah, what the hey. Fletcher was probably walking around with his chest puffed out about it. If Kellen couldn't deflate it, someone else was welcome to.

"I don't suppose you're familiar with Duncan Fletcher?"

Raiden wasn't sure if it mattered to him who the girl was. At least not in that moment; it was more important to find out who had tried to break Kellen's face. The messenger was more important when they were the one doing the violent acts.

...Duncan Fletcher.

"That..." he started, voice sharp. Oh, temper. Raiden bit his tongue and took a breath. "The Hufflepuff whose name came out of the Goblet. That idiot saw fit to put his fist in your eye?"

Over some girl who probably hadn't even had good reason for hitting Kellen in the first place? Raiden knew his friend could be a bit abrasive, but even Daphne hadn't been pushed to put a hit out on his face.

At that moment, Kellen felt as though he'd just touched a match to a trail of dynamite powder. Hopefully Fletcher had some bruise balm? He couldn't borrow any of Kellen's.

"That... would be him, yes." Considering how angry Raiden was being about it (though, admittedly, the prefect should get ten points for controlling his temper), Kellen didn't think it would be wise to add that the girl in the equation was Neptune.

"Right." The prefect took another breath, looked at the floor very hard for a moment, and then looked back at Kellen. His expression had gone calm again. "Right. Okay then."

The Hufflepuff Common Room was... near the kitchen? Classes were over for the day, so Fletcher would probably be near there, or possibly in his common room...

"I think I'm going to-" Going to what, Raiden? Tell him to apologise? Find out what his exact reasons were for doing what he'd done? "-go break his face."

Yup. Totally a good prefect. A good, snapped prefect, very calmly and serenely telling one of his best friends that he was going to go bust someone's eye socket in the same way he'd done said friend. Raiden glanced over his shoulder toward the stairs. If he found a Hufflepuff, would they be willing to send Fletcher out of the common room?

"Ah. Hah. Raiden, that's not a good idea." Kellen didn't really want to get in the way of his friend, as the prefect had that 'I am about to hurt someone quite, quite badly' look about his face, but this wasn't, technically speaking, Raiden's fight. Right?

No glancing. No.

Kellen put his hands on Raiden's temples and turned his face away from the stairs, "Remember the whole Triwizard thing? You know? You and Fletcher being Champions? Competing for the school? Not exposing a weakness to the other two schools? And all that?"

He gave Raiden's head a slight shake, "Breaking his face would count as exposing a weakness."

Not a good idea? And why was Kellen touching his face. Raiden's face was not one of the faces in question in this discussion. It was about Fletcher's face, and Kellen's face. Specifically, making Fletcher's face look worse off than Kellen's. Not difficult, but Raiden wasn't quite sure how bad it had been previously, so he was going to aim high and make sure he made it worse.

"The only weakness it would expose is the fact that Fletcher has a tendency to bruise, which I doubt is a real weakness that can do us any damage as a school." He wrapped his hands around Kellen's wrists and removed them from the side of his head. "You bruise and we're not any weaker as a school because of it."

It wasn't like he was going to disable Fletcher. Just... break him. Probably quite a bit. Raiden had learned this summer that he could hit fairly hard when he wanted to.

"I'll only hurt him a little bit. He'll still be able to compete."

Probably.

"Well what if you have to work together with him during the Tournament?" Kellen pointed out. Somehow, he didn't think that Fletcher would be the most willing partner if Raiden had turned his face to the consistency of mashed potatoes.

"Come on, Raiden, you know what I mean." Hopefully? He knew what he meant, right? Maybe?

"Besides, what if you get put in detention? Then you won't be able to compete, and what would that have proven?"

"I'll work with Miles." Because obviously if there were a partner task, they'd be interchangeable. "He'd let me punch Fletcher, I bet."

The prefect dropped Kellen's hands and looked at the staircase again. Maybe Arya would tell Fletcher Raiden needed to speak to him? She was surely wandering around somewhere... and this was all on the assumption that Fletcher was in his common room. Could be sitting in the great hall stuffing his face and waiting.

"Did he get detention for hitting you?" Raiden raised an eyebrow. "I'm not going to do it in front of a professor or anything. I'm not an idiot."

Just enraged. Obviously better than an idiot.

"Would have proven that Fletcher looks like hell with a black eye."

This definitely needed to be proved.

"Well I'm not Miles." But if Raiden wanted to punch Fletcher, Kellen wouldn't exactly stop him. He just wouldn't give him any encouragement.

"No, he didn't, but I didn't exactly go around telling everyone it happened, either. Could you say the same for Fletcher? Maybe he'd go right to a professor and complain about it." He could help but smile a little at Raiden's defense of his 'brilliant plan', "I know you're not an idiot."

And... okay yes, that needed to be proven.

No argument there.

"I'm aware." Kellen and Miles were very, very different. But that didn't mean that Kellen shouldn't let Raiden hit Fletcher.

Mrph. Stern. Just stop.

"Maybe you should have, I could've hit him a lot earlier." The prefect would have maybe grinned at the next thing he said, but he wasn't exactly in a grinning mood. "How many people do you think would believe I'd punched someone out, Stern."

Plus... Raiden was a Slytherin. He knew how to stay out of trouble. He was not like Dakest, who seemed to be destined to end up in the dungeons after every potions class because he couldn't keep his mouth shut.

"Think he's in his common room? Or wandering around somewhere?"

Needed to hit him before this rage cooled too much.

That... was actually a good question. How many people would believe Raiden had mercilessly beaten the snot out of someone else? Kellen tapped his first two fingers off his lower lips, considering it, "Probably... not very many."

As for Raiden's other question, Kellen tossed a shrug off his shoulders, "Don't know, don't care. As long as he stays away from me, he can be anywhere in the school he likes."

Which... kind of reminded him of something else. Strangely enough, "When you're not in a violent kind of mood, there's something else I wanted to talk to you about."

Not very many? Raiden looked down at himself; one of the few images that had clung to him throughout his years at Hogwarts was the whole 'harmless' and 'terminally sweet' thing. No matter how tall he'd gotten, no matter how he worked at making his body not skinny and stringy... pretty much everyone still looked at him as a harmless boy.

"Not many that would rat on me, at the very least," he said flatly, fingers flexing in and out a few times. He'd only ever punched one person in his life, and that had been Jake... and he hadn't wanted to.

Fletcher would do well to not be found any time soon. Whether Kellen wanted him found or not.

Hmmm? Something else? The prefect looked at Stern and frowned.

"I am perfectly calm right now, Kellen." Definitely. He wasn't feeling totally violent... just a little. He only wanted to knock Fletcher out.

"True, true. If I suddenly see Fletcher looking a little worse for wear, I'll just assume he hit his fat head off a door frame or something." At least, if questioned that would be Kellen's statement.

Not really believing Raiden all the way about the calm thing, Kellen told him anyway, "I can't produce a formed Patronus, and I was looking for someone to help me out with it. I figured either you or Sabel. What do you think?"

Okay, it was a totally different topic, granted, but... might as well, right? Maybe it would even distract Raiden from committing bodily harm, though Kellen wasn't going to hold his breath on that one.

Yup. Totally calm prefect, wasn't he. Totally and utterly calm. Just very cheesed off.

...wait what? Kellen couldn't produce a corporeal patronus? He was like... sixteen at least, wasn't he? Surely he'd... but then again Kellen wasn't that great at defence magic. So it stood to reason that he might not be able to... But still. Sabel could do it. It was one of the things that Raiden remembered from that fight.

"I can help you, if you want me to." He nodded. "I've been able to do it for a few terms... it's difficult at first."

And they did weird things sometimes. Like how his had been a duck at first, and then it had gone to a rabbit... and it had gotten stuck somewhere between the two, unsure as to what it was meant to be. That had been slightly disturbing.

"Why are you just bringing it up now?"

Kellen couldn't help it; he snorted at Raiden's description. Then he clarified, "No, that's not... that's not funny."

Totally was.

As to why he was bringing up the Patronus, Kellen glanced around before admitting, "Two reasons. First, Kingsley says it'll help a ton with my concentration. Second... well a magic user's Patronus and animal form are usually the same."

Assuming they tried to get an animal form, that is. He grinned a little sheepishly, "I thought it would be a good heads-up."

It wasn't funny. It wasn't meant to be funny. Raiden really was going to make a Hufflepuff pancake out of the Glitterpuff. It wasn't going to be pretty.

"Well it will help with your concentration a lot. You need to be good at concentration to get it down, and that's a key thing for... being an animagus." He may have made a face. Electing to become an animal... errr. Raiden had had enough of being a fuzzy little creature. "They're connected, huh. Well that takes all of the mystery out of what I'd be."

Snort.

"I didn't know you'd gotten cleared for the animagus thing."
