Default HoM III Lesson - Held beside the Lake

Just yards away from the edge of the Lake are a number of blankets laid out and some of the cushion and pillows from the last lesson. Each blanket is large enough to hold four or five students.

With a glance at all the students following her, she lead the way and situated herself and her own picnic basket on the blanket nearest the lake.

"Do come and find a blanket and settle in. Our picnic will begin soon."

Very well. Eino got up and took a few steps closer to the lake, but still stood at a safe distance. How should he address it-- or how should he address him? AIHIJNFJIGSFUIJWN! It was silly to talk to a squid, but even sillier to worry so much about it! He cleared his throat and fixed his tie as he contemplated. Should he shout? Maybe if he did it would scare Bartholomew, but if he didn't he wouldn't hear him. Wait, do squids even have ears? They probably don't. All this thinking discouraged Eino, but no one else seemed to have the courage to embarrass him/herself, and the Professor was very excited about this, so he was at least doing it for a loony Professor. That thought did not help him either. Nothing that came to his mind helped him! "Ummm..." He said nervously looking at the quiet lake. "Hi Mr. Batholomew, my name's Eino."Finally, he said something. He pretended he was just talking to another new face and introducing himself, which he had done a lot during his first year. He waited for a little while but nothing happened, so he repeated himself, louder this time. Maybe he is shy. "Well, it's very rude to leave me talking to my myself, Mr. Batholomew. You could at least give me a small sign!" And just as he finished the water moved. BY THE TIDY WHITIES OF MERLIN AND KING ARTHUR-- Oh, it was just the wind. Disappointed and upset, Eino returned to his seat. "I tried, Professor, but it doesn't work! Maybe he is taking a nap. We should throw some fishes in the water and see if he comes up to get them!" He suggested not sure if squids ate fishes.

Kurumi giggled at Eino's attempt to talk to Batholomew. "Maybe he would like a cookie?" she offered handing him one of the many chocolate chip ones they had in their basket. It was worth a try, right?

Hope is the only thing stronger than fear.

Daisy nodded in agreement with her Professor. Raising her hand she said, "I heard that Bartholomew was really nice and everything, you just had to treat him with the proper amount of respect and not insult him. My cousin got a chance to meet the Giant Squid when she was here."

Really a chat now and then would probably be good for the Willow and the students.

"We could try, but I'm not sure is Bartholomew will be willing to come close when not many of you seen to keen on talking to him. He may be squid, but I'm sure he had have feelings."

Appreciated the chat? For a split second, Salander's eyes grew large in alarm, but quickly passed it off as agreement, nodding his head quickly " Well you're right it didnt talk Professor, but the Whomping Willow was uh... quite expressive indeed, even without words." Because actions speak louder than words right? At least the Willow seem to think so.

The Slytherin lad looked tentatively over the lake. For some reason he just couldnt shake the image of the giant tentacles reaching out from the murky depths and dragging anything and anybody it could reach back down into the water. Then something about what the Professor just said struck him "Professor, just how much contact have the squi-- Bartholomew had? I mean if hardly anybody talks to him, then like the Whomping Willow, wouldnt he be a bit..." what was her word "... temperamental?" Heckling aside of course.

Lexi furrowed her brow and said, "But Professor, we may not KNOW those languagesbut we know they exist. And wouldn't the grindylows and merepeople and whatever else there is down there keep Bartholomew company?" This lesson was confusing her and that made her brain hurt. She wasn't trying to argue with the Professor by any means, but she just didn't GET it.

The history of hogwarts was important to who? Surly she wasnt using Jacob as part of that 'us'.

Jacob was going to be stubborn and difficult today. "Unless Hogwarts' history is extremely bloody, and violent, then no." he said plainly and started listing things that fit that category. "And by extremely bloody and violent I mean, people spontaneously combustioning, small cute fuzzy animals randomly imploding, Little puppies running around headless, and ugly disfigured people popping out of no where randomly running around the grounds and yelling about how aweful their complemetery breakfast and hotel service was."

Wow there was a lot of randomness in Jacobs image of violent history.

Rene was really confused how can a squid be part of history wouldnt that be more suitable for the care of magical creatures class. Her head was hurting already GREAT.

"So, If I may your saying that history is important which I agree, Its good to know what happened in the past as to not recreate it in the future, not certian that it will not happen. But how is a squid history and not really ment for the COMC class."

"Oh wait," Fletcher looked up from his one-man cupcake party and around at his classmates, realization just now dawning on him. He had enough pink frosting on his face to classify him as Glitterpuff the Pink-Nosed Hufflejock but that didn't stop him from speaking up.

"I heard that you have to compliment Mr. Barty Henry, to get on his good side, before you really try talking to him. Otherwise he'll try to drown ya."

Like what had happened to Sadie, heheh. It had worked even if that had just been Fletcher pretending to be a squid.

He shoved a cupcake into his face and munched obnoxiously, confused about where the squid was and who the heck Barthomew was.

"There's definitely no calamari in there," he whispered to the two girls sitting beside him. "I think the cupcakes have gone to the professor's head." Yeah the history of Hogwarts was totally important and all but Fletcher was too distracted by the food to pay attention just now.

He polished off one cupcake and reached for another, successfully getting a bit of pink frosting on the tip of his nose in the process. He leaned toward Awesome Bott and nudged her back. "Hey, Bartholomew would make a good name for a cat. It has 'mew' at the end, you know, like the sound kitties make. Mew mew! Mew mew!" Fletcher demonstrated the noise for Neptune although it sounded more like a TIE fighter than a kitten.

Neptune was lost in a fit of giggles at Duncan the pink nosed dear. He was MEWING and it was absolutely precious. He wasn't exactly turning cupcakes into kittens, but ... well... it was almost as good. He certainly made the cupcake seem more appetizing.

But anyway. Ravenclaw at work here. Clearly she was paying attention and learning. Clearly.

"I heard that, too, Duncan! Besides, everyone knows you can never give too many compliments - particularly to things that can EAT you or your peers." Perhaps the squid took requests? There were a few people she wouldn't have minded it eating.

"Professor, I think you should produce this Bartholomew for us! If he's been around as long as the school, then he IS history. You won't even have to teach at all. Tell him you LIKE his shade of pink!"
Sounded like a good plan, so says the Bossy Bott.

What was he thinking!? Maybe the Professor was a giant squid whisperer, but he had never heard of anyone who could talk to giant squids anyway, but in spite of the embarrassment it was worth a try, what if Bartholomew had responded? It would be pretty cool. Other inhabitants? Well, the Professor had already mentioned Whooping Willow, and he only knew of another one. "Professor, there are also Thestrals in the school... right? Don't they pull the carriages for the sixth and seventh year students at the beginning of school?" He had heard they were invisible creatures, so he had never seen one.

Ellie was... half paying attention. Mostly she was eating her brownies and watching the lake be all twinkly. There was no 'all right class started' announcement, so she figured all this was idle chit-chat. And she had no idea how much time may or may not have been passing. It was very nice. To just sit. And stareeee. And not think. And especially not learn.

But this last statement sounded like it would be importantish. At least from what she'd heard.

"Let's." the little girl answered. Let's talk about the... inhabitants of Hogwarts...? Yeah. Wait. "Like who, exactly?"

She was still not looking at the professor. But she was paying attention. Now. Sort of. Heh.

"I'm sure Bartholomew is best taught in CoMC, but I'm speaking of him and what he has seen. What of all the other beings that happen to call Hogwarts their home? Maybe we should talk about them as well."

Once again their Champion had hit the nail on its head. "Very true. Compliments usually warrant a better impression."

"You know if I could possible produce him, I would. But I am neither his keeper or him, so we will have to wait and see if he will grace us with his presence."

She did hope that he would show, but she wouldn't blame him for keeping his distance as well.

"While we wait and see if he will come to us, why don't we talk about inhabitants of Hogwarts?"
"Nothing much really," Daisy said. "She said you had to give him compliments and show that you were a kind hearted person. Oh and he saved a kid and he gave her a clam but she never really said why the clam was needed." She shrugged. "All in all he's supposed to be really nice and trusting. ?"

He might come out if we lure him with food...Like what Hermione Granger did during her time at Hogwarts, but Cass knew that the Professor would like that very much. So she kept the idea to herself.

"Well, aside from Bartholomew, there are also merpeople down there, and there are house elves down at the kitchen, and ghosts...everywhere." Cass answered. There were also creatures at the forbidden forest and stuff, but she wasn't particularly close to them....

Inhabitants? That could only mean one thing. She had been a student here once, and Jacob was willing to put money on it that she was a Ravenclaw. Jacobs eyes widened.

"S-So, You've seen it too?" he said, stuttering slightly. "So, I-I'm, Crazy?" he turned and looked up at the castle, he pointed up at Ravenclaw tower. "You've seen him! The Gorilla up in the common room! That one that tried to eat my banana costume..." Jacob was sane... he was sane! "It's been mocking me. They've said I'm crazy, but I'm not crazy! I'm NOT!"

See! Jacobs not crazy! She's seen it. 'I'm Not Crazy, I'm Not Crazy, I'm Not Crazy.'

Jacob curled back up into a feeble position.

Niffler...Crup...

It was totally a crup. "Crup." she whispered back to the Gryffie, a sly little smirk on her face. Pssh...she just, needed to find the cloud that looked like a crup. Or Niffler, and then say it was a crup.

Which is what she did now. Leaning her head back, the Slytherin first got used to the sun in her eyes before searching for said cloud. Mwaha! It was better then talking about talking to giant squids or trees.

Because everyone knew you could hear trees speak as the wind rushed through their rustling branches and leaves. *snort*

Evelyn pretty much spaced out and was staring into the sky still, looking for that certain cloud.

That is, until a certain question came up. Oh...OH! Pfft, forget about the house elves and merpeople. Really, who cared about THEM?

"Yes, lets talk about the inhabitants." Smiling, her head turned to her she-snake friends and her other favorite Gryffindor. "I vote we talk about the professors. Such strange creatures."

Teehee. Or the Ravenclaw students. Some of them were quite questionable. How did that kid make it into that house anyways?

"I... suppose so Professor." Salander replied tentatively. They hold flying lessons over the lake around here? Well that ought to be a soft landing for some of them who arent that great on the broom (such as himself). But then again if there's a giant squid just waiting for clumsy flyers at the bottom of the lake....

He winced upon hearing Fletcher's reply Compliment the giant squid to be treated well in return? Like what was he supposed to say? 'Hey Barty you're quite a dish?'

Then the discussion went for a more interesting turn-- Hogwarts inhabitants-- specifically Professors. The Slytherin lad had to smirked at what Evelyn started, then heard one of the blonds sitting with Fletcher ask about the Muggle Studdies Professor. Well now if he's fair game... "How about you Professor Welton..." the Slytherin lad started, slyly glancing at her fingers quickly for a certain trinket that he hoped wouldnt be there "... any Significant Others?"yes he had to ask, for the sake of the menfolk at this school!

Oh nom. Finlay was still a little distracted by these yummy brownies, but his ears did perk up when he heard Neptune speaking, and he watched her carefully. They were talking about the professors? That was wierd, but then they were an inhabitant of the castle. Now he was tempted to join in, (Because he was rather cheeky) but he had a feeling Lexi might slap him or something if he did that, so he decided to put a bit more of an intellectual point across. "Ghosts inhabit the castle don't they?" He was pretty certain because he had seen one of them....

Barty?!?!

"Jacob, I really don't think he would take a liking to be called that and please try not to jump into the water."

Yes, that eagle was something, wasn't he?

Turning her attention back to the class, she nodded.

"When I was a student, I used to come down and sit by the lake and watch Bartholomew. I would talk to him, but I don't know if he ever really understood me."

Of course, she had a feeling he did, but she wasn't sure.

"Haven't any of you ever tried talking to him?"

"Think about all the languages in the world that exist but we don't all speak. We might not speak them but they all exist, correct?"

"Of course Eino! Feel free to talk to him. I don't think he will come all that close to us, but feel free to come closer to the water and have a few words with him."

She couldn't really help but have a slight giggle at the what she was seeing on the young Slytherin's face.
"It's an interesting theory, I'd really love to know if it was true. But you know if your brothers told you, they might have been tugging your leg. I know I used to do the same to my brother."

Siblings did always have a way of tugging each other's legs and all.

"You know I always wondered that myself. It's obviously not his natural habitat, but Bartholomew isn't really an ordinary giant squid either. How do you think he ended up in our lake?"

"I've never heard him speak English but I think he might understand it."

Squidish?!?!

"Maybe we could learn it! But first, let's see if Bartholomew will come to us."

You do make a valid point Patroclus. It is more sounds that we hear but again we aren't accustom to what we hear but we can definitely pick up on emotions and all."

Yes, they were all a smart bunch of kiddies!

"Of course there is a way. Think about parseltongue. Snakes don't speak in words to us, but again they have their own means of communication. Now think of all the other possible means of communication amongst non-speaking beings and creatures."

Hearing the voice of Miss Bott, she glanced over. Bartholomew did like to hide and all, but maybe she had a point. They needed to see him and then they would believe for sure.

Looking back to the water and then to her students she sighed happily. It appeared that they were getting the jest of things.

"You know I'm sure you are wondering what this has to do with History of magic? Well, it's important to know about all things that relate to history right? So why not learn about what is around us. Bartholomew is a part of the history of Hogwarts and the history of Hogwarts is important to us, correct?"

Yes, minor details that added up to the grand scheme of things.
Aaron was NOM NOM NOMMING on his basket when he nearly choked.

Bartholomew???

Aaron shot his hand strait up.

"Professor, I met him my first year. And by met him, I mean I swam out to him and he picked me up.... Aaron looked around to the other students. "Come on, doesn't anybody remember the floods? Bartholomew knew how to stop them... And me and my friends found out from him..." Yikes, bad memories went into Aaron's head. Bad... wet... Memories.

"Yeah," Fletcher spoke up and nodded toward Neptune. Awesome Bott needed to be renamed Giggles if you asked him. "What's ole Barty up to these days? Is there like, enough fish and merpeople for him to eat down in that dirty lake? Do you know if it connects to the ocean somehow, professor?"

While researching the Triwizard Tournament, Fletcher had come across a source that said the Durmstrang students had entered Hogwarts by appearing from under the lake inside a giant sailing ship. It was hard to believe but just slightly probable. And now Fletcher was curious...... curious to see if Professor Welton knew the answer.

He was momentarily distracted from his question regarding the giant squid's dietary habits, however, by the professor's query and one of the She-Snakes' responses.

"Pssssh forget Zookara," Fletcher rolled his eyes at Neptune and itched at his pink-frosted nose with one hand. Why was it so itchy? It was like there was something there he couldn't see... but since he couldn't see it and didn't care enough, the frosting remained firmly fixated to his face.

"What I wanna know is, has anyone else seen the love triangle between three of Hogwarts' inhabitants?" He raised his brows and glanced around the class picnic. "You know who I'm talking about. Professor Dodson, Professor Carlton, and Professor Lafay. Or it could be a rectangle, if you throw in Brielle."

Oooh la la, the geometry of love. Fletcher just wanted to know if he could narrow the love triangle or whatever down to a love circle, between just himself and Carlton. He hated the color pink but her highlights were one HAWT exception.

"Niffler" Patroclus winked at Evelyn, whilst also listening to the professor.
He was a great multi-tasker!

Inhabitants of Hogwarts? Well they were all inhabitants of Hogwarts yeah?

"Let's talk about me! I enjoy food!" Patroclus joked, a laugh acting as a fullstop, "Now your go, Evelyn, talk about how great I am? Then Destiny you follow, and Marie you sum up!" With this subject matter, they were all bound to get A+'s

Listening to the others around him, whilst waiting for Evelyn to discuss how attractive and brainy he was, Patroclus over heard the Hufflepuff Champion talking about Professor Dodson, his Head of House; Professor Carlton, as well as Lafay and the sexy french girl!
Love Rectangle? Patroclus questioned to the girls, we shall discuss that.....after we discuss me. Discuss!"

Bartholomew knew how to stop them... And me and my friends found out from him..." Yikes, bad memories went into Aaron's head. Bad... wet... Memories.
"Yes, the flood. I was really hoping someone remember that. I wasn't present, but I'm sure that it left an impression on the students."

"Well, the last time I checked the lake was full of things that Bartholomew could eat but I don't think he is the type to eat merepeople."

Of course it was very possible, she would probably have to look into it for maybe even talk to Maya about it.

"You know, I do believe the lake would be connected to the ocean in some way. I haven't been to the other side of the lake, but one would think there was a river or stream that would feed the lake and all."

Again with the talk of professors and love triangles and polygons.

"Really class, we shouldn't be talking about such things. You wouldn't want the professors to speak of you and your relationships, would you? I say we stop this now and more on."

Discuss!"
Again, she shook her head and waved her hand over her basket. The lid of it closed as all the other picnic baskets followed in succession.

"Class, I really think this lesson is going nowhere. Perhaps, I should just give out the homework and let you loose to wander about."
