Default Divination I :: Oneiromancy

Professor Reynolds was sitting on the edge of his desk, waiting for the students to file in once he opened his class. Today however he looked a bit more exhausted than usual...his glasses had slid down the bridge of his nose and he'd made no effort to fix them, and he hadn't bothered to button up his navy sweater vest today either. Still, as the first students began to arrive, he made an effort to smile for them as they entered the room.

"Hello class...please take a seat, and we'll begin today's lesson shortly," he announced. "Keep chatter to a minimum, please!"

OOC: Class will begin in 1-2ish hours or so. Nolan IS in the room so please keep the chitter chatter down! Thank youuuu!

Oooh, she knew this, she'd read about it the other day when her mother was going on about a weird dream she'd had. Carin remembered looking up the term in her textbooks and being rather interested by the concept.

"Oneiromancy is the idea that you can predict the future by interpreting your dreams," Carin replied. She also recalled that when her mother had tried interpreting her dream, it had made no sense at all.

"But, sir, how accurate is that considered to be? I mean, if the prediction is based on interpretation, than any expert could come up with a different future, seeing as interpreting something is a matter of point of view, it's subjective. Right?" she asked curiously. It always amazed her how many people believed and relied on divination without much solid facts around it.

hmm, Emmaleigh had flipped through her book for class. Hadn't she seen "oneiromancy" in there? She raised her hand to answer. "I think it has s-something to do with d-dreams Sir." she stamered.

Fee smiled at Rubiey widely.
She had become really important to Fee. Sweet.
As she noticed another girl sitting next to her she turned her head.
Oh it was Emmaleigh.
"Hi", she said smiling.

"As far as i know Oneiromancy is about dreams and to figure out what they meant."

Luna raised her hand as the professor asked the question. "Oneiromancy is thinking that what happens in your dreams is going to happen in the future, sir," Luna said.

From her seat, Lorelai BLINK!BLINK!BLIIIINKED at some of the words used. Sure, she wasn't bloody brilliant in this lesson, nor did she even think she could spell the lessons title properly herself [without her timetable to aid her], but THIS was beyond belief. Little -and we MEAN little- kids knew the answer, and she just .. didn't.

Oh, first fail of the term.

She was sure glad she had read her textbook over the summer. Not that it would help her much.

Moooooooo. :) || Have a supermegafoxyawesomehot Christmas.

Just as Jenny found a seat and was pulling out her quill and parchment, she looked up at the professor and blinked.

What? What did one...onei...one-iron-mency mean? Sighing, Jenny figured out that this was going to be one of her worst classes anyway. Even DADA was better than this.

Jenny prepared to take notes as a few other people (who were quite interested in Divination, she noticed) answered the professor's question.

Thankfully Chloe hadtaken divinations at her previous school so she was not completely in the dark for this class. Even so, she had never heard onoiromancy. Thus, she took her book out and turned to the index and found the answer cause she certainly was not gonna let herself fall behind. she raised her hand and answered, "Oneiromancy is interpreting one dreams in hopes of predicting the future.".

Lina raised her hand, not sure if she was bored or interested. "Oneiromancy is the practice of interpreting dreams. This is usually done using a set list of symbolism in which to derive meaning, or by personal interpretations which could be more or less accurate based on the sensitivity of the person... either in knowing themselves or being able to sense the meaning and feelings behind a person's dream. Some say that the definition of imagery is set, while others believe that it's a matter of what the symbols mean to you. The latter belief better explains why different dream 'dictionaries' from different cultures have different definitions. The way a dragon can be seen as evil and connected to the serpent in one culture, but a sign of luck, prosperity, and wisdom in another culture."

Salander gave the Professor a half-smile. His heart was still racing slightly but he's pretty much caught his breath by now. "No thanks Chief, I'm good." he replied. He appreciated that this Professor was nice enough to offer him something to drink, the only other thing his past teachers offered him was detention or dismissal. boo.

Oh no, big words... not good. Salander brow furrowed as he struggled to listened to other students giving the answer to the Professor's question. "Uh yeah, what they said." he answered casually, nodding his head and pretending that he knew what the answer was all along. But the lad started to feel uneasy. He knew he will get lost in the lesson very quickly unless he had something to follow the discussion with, since he knew his brain doesnt have a fool's hope in providing the answers. Quietly he opened his bag and rummaged it for the Divination book. Where is that thing that had a lot of fog?....

She raised her hand at the first question, might as well take a stab. "Is it the type of divination that is based on dreams, sir?" For someone who was rubbish at this lesson, it was quite a good guess. In her opinion.

"Yes, points to all of you!" Nolan said with a smile, hopping off his desk and heading over to the chalkboard to jot down the definition for their notes. "As many of you said, Oneiromancy is the art of interpreting dreams to find out about future events, or even to uncover certain personality traits hidden deep within your unconscious mind," he explained. "The best way to do this is through the use of dream diaries, where people record their dreams in a notebook of some sort before they forget them, usually right when they wake up."

Onerwhatamy? Daniel was suprised with himself. This was something familiar. He didn't know what the professer had said but he knew what it meant. Dad had kept a dream diary for his therapist. " It's a divination based on dreams. People belive dreams can tell you about the future. But their kind of weird. I mean seeing a mushroom could mean your going to pass something" Yeah they were weird like that.
Nolan chuckled and nodded. "Yes, sometimes symbols can have very...random meanings. Although at times this can be good...the stranger the dream, the more you have to interpret!" he explained.

He KNEW teaching a lesson would cheer him up! These kids had such clever answers.

"That is true of MANY forms of Divination," Nolan explained, beginning to pace in front of his desk. "For example, in tea leaf reading, people will always see different shapes. What looks like a spoon to one person may look like a frog to another," he said. "However, I've often found that if people take their interpretations seriously, along the line they find that their predictions are correct. That's not to say that EVERYTHING in this class you interpret will be correct. That is both the beauty and downfall of Divination...you never know if the prediction is right until it actually happens," he explained.

Nolan nodded. "Right you are...for simplicity's sake, we're going to have a set list of symbols and their meanings when we do our readings, the same one we used last term," he explained with a smile.

"Dream interpretation is one of the oldest forms of Divination...one of the oldest and most unique examples of this was the Ramesside Dream-Book. Does anyone know which ancient culture that book was from?" he asked the class. Yay history!

Simon listened to all the answers various fellow students gave to the first question the professor gave the class. His quill moving across parchment as he took notes on what was being said. As the next question was asked, Simon decided to take a chance on this one and raised his hand to answer.

"Ancient Egypt " he replied as he lowered his hand back to the table in front of him.

Trixie raised her hand to answer the question, a grin on the sixth years face. She really did actually enjoy Divination a lot. "Was it the Ancient Egyptians Professor?" she asked but it was almost stated as a fact. She thought she had it correct, in fact she was pretty certain but it was always good to get things checked wasn't it? "From Deir el-Medina to be more specific" that was if he wanted detail.

Writing down the topic on the top of the page in her notebook, glaring at her writing utensil for it's boring-ness, the Slytherin leaned back in her seat before writing down what the definition of oneiromancy was. Ooh question, she knew the answer to. "The ancient Epgyptians." she said, raising her hand slightly before putting it down after answering. That was right...right?

Woooot, she got the question right. She was getting good at this.
Hmmm, Ella definitely rememebered reading about this kind of Divination somewhere. The Ramesside Dream-Book.......?
"Ancient Egyptian culture?" She said with her hand raised. That was the only culture that sprung to mind really.

Yeah! Points for Huffies. Awesome.

And then, hmmmm, Treyen wasn't sure, but he raised his hands nonetheless, there were one sort of people that liked dreams and stuff, "Egypt, Professor" he said, and if he was wrong, then that's what he was here for, to learn.

Anicent cultures? Finn was pretty sure that there were only a few ancient cultures? So if he really didn't know the answer he could just take a guess? He thought for a few minutes, before raising his hand. He was sure that it was that one, from what he remembered vagely. "Isn't it from the Egyptian culture?" He inquired as he glanced around the room, grinning at Lexi, who seemed to be staring at him.

Carin raised her hand when she heard the next question - she'd almost missed it, having been thinking about the Professor's reply to her previous query. So basically, it turned out that any interpretation might be correct... well, that wasn't very helpful. She'd say it's a downside of the subject rather than the magic of it...

It would be magical if a prediction did come true, though.

She was striking lucky today, seeing as they were covering a topic she knew a thing or two about, just when she most needed to start gaining back the points she'd lost. Oooh she liked dreams!

"That would be Ancient Egypt, sir, sometime around 1213 BC while Ramesses II was ruling," she replied. Well, the monarch was easy, considering the name of the book.

"Wasnt it Egypt?!", Fee raised her hand.
She wasnt quite sure about that but she had decided it wouldnt be to bad to say something wrong. She was there to learn.

Riley had been sitting there writing down as much notes as he possibly could. He had NO divination expereience at all at his old school and he had met Professor Nolan in Diagon Alley and he wanted to look good for the guy who saved his shoes.

He listened and watched as a few other people raised their hands and he thought he had heard that name of the book before, when he was reading his Divination textbook. "Professor I think the oracles and priests used that book in Ancient Egypt and the Nile River civilizations." he said with a bright grin, yep he knew that answer!
