The Defense Against the Dark Arts classroom had a slightly stale odor to it after having been shut up for most of the summer, in spite of the half-hearted cleaning attempts Tate attempted. He wasn't a cleaner, and he didn't have time to learn to be one.
He threw open the windows as he entered the classroom, opting instead to spend the first few minutes in the room tracing chalk outlines on the floor. The lines created a sort of flat maze, covering the room from the door to his desk at the front. Tate cleaned his hands on his robes before taking a seat behind the desk.
"Hold that thought," Tate smiled slightly at Kellen's response. You couldn't win a duel with Protego alone, but it was an important spell, especially for the youngest students in this class.
"Now, let's continue in this train of thought for a moment. How can we 'be prepared' as the Muggle Scouts say? As the GlitterPuff says... how can we be vigilant?"
Patroclus could see where this lesson was heading, well at least he thought he did.
"Practice." Patroclus offered, "having a well drilled knowledge of the spells in your arsenel. Knowing them inside and out." that was really sort of assumed preparation, Patroclus thought, "Another way, could be to know your enemy, that's if you already had an idea who they are or will be." Patroclus thought this section of hs answer was more to do with Auror's etc. "If you know théir strenghts and weakness you can be ready for them, prepared for sneak attacks, and such."
From his experience, some duelist had tells, signs that gave away their oncoming attack.
*With a shaking hand Matty raised it up.*
"By remembering your spells, always having your wand, be aware of what is around you at all time, and never turning your back to others?"
*It took everything in him to not stutter. As soon as he had spoke he went back to his paper and started making notes again.*
Moooooooo. :) || Have a supermegafoxyawesomehot Christmas.

Jenny finally looked up from her notes. Now's her chance to say something; she might sound quite unintelligent for a first year, but oh well, Jenny raised her hand. Here goes nothing...
"I think we can 'be prepared' if we can learn to recognize all the signs of Dark Magic and use our quick thinking and common sense to respond to those signs properly. Similarly, the Muggle Scouts have their own set of healing skills known as first aid to help those who are injured or wounded in emergencies; these skills also require quick thinking and common sense."
Jenny breathed slowly for a few seconds before returning back to her notes. That was quite a lot she said. Surprisingly, she remembered the part about the first aid too; her father used to talk about being a Boy Scout back in Japan a lot.

Simon had been busy writting a few things down as the class progressed but he could never seem to get an answer in. Before he could speak what came to his own mind it seemed like somebody else had to first and beat him to it. On the latest question, the gryffindor boy tried his best to think of something different then the rest and raised his hand before answering.
"To help yourself be prepared and vigilent it is good to be well-rested and fed," he answered despite the fact that it might seem silly. "If you're tired or distracted by hunger your attention isn't as sharp as it could be causing you to miss signs of danger," Simon explained feeling a little better with his answer.
Having nodded towards Jermaine, Noel sat back with a parchment and quill in front of him, taking notes every now and then for later use even though this was all just common sense at the moment, and listening to what everyone was saying.
He did however glance towards Sandra every now and then, and noticing the exchange between her and that one guy from the feast and pathway. It was a shame he wasn't sitting right in the middle, blocking the guy's view, but then again, he wasn't about to get up and move either. Best just go back to taking review notes, and continue listening in on the answers.
"Education if you dont know what you should be looking for you might as well be asleep" but the list was so much longer that that seemed to cover most of it
And was he serious about his answers? Headmaster Tate must think he isn't joking, but perhaps the boy had some mind issues?
Danika didn't agree with Fletcher there. Using Divination as a Constant Vigilance strategy? No, thank you. Constant Vigilance was acquired by experience, not by gazing into a crystal ball.
That just seemed foolish.
And clearly not a best defense, nor a good offense.

Kurumi, who had been busy as a bee writing down notes in her notebook, peaked over at Adam who she was lucky enough to get a seat next to. She was glad the he looked as confused as she was. Growing up knowing nothing about magic was certainly starting to take its toll and it was only the first class. But the, the professor began to talk about "being prepared" and other qualities that seemed strongly connected to something that was within her world of knowledge: kendo. Perhaps being a witch was not so different from being a kenshi (swordsmen). Kurumi quickly wrote out her thoughts on paper before raising her hand - she was trying to be brave for her first class.
"Professor," she said in more of a whisper than she had intended. She didn't know much about magic, so she was a little nervous about speaking. "Perhaps all forms of magic can be compared to the art of kendo? Kendo is a physically and mentally challenging activity - from what experience I have with magic and hearing from others, it seems to be similar. Magic, and in our case defense against the Dark Arts, is not something that you can go at light heartedly." She took a deep breath as she looked down at the notes she had taken. "For magic, as is in kendo, one must mold the mind and body. Cultivate a vigorous spirit and through correct and rigid training, one can master great spells and learn to counter harmful ones. Not only that, but a way that we prepare ourselves in kendo is to forever pursue the cultivation of oneself. I think, that if one applies this principle to magic use, you will be able to do amazing things." She paused for a moment, wondering if she should go on or if the professor was even familiar with such a concept as kendo. "In kendo, your life and power comes from your weapon. In magic, that weapon is your wand. Once you come to understand your weapon and fully embrace it and connect it with your spirit and being, that is when your true power comes out. Not only that, but you must study your opponent carefully and understand their methods before you know how to move against them. If they are used to attacking from the right, then you must be prepared to defend accordingly and attack from the opposite." If nothing else, the ideas she was sharing made sense in her head. She hoped that it did to the others around her.

Reason: my horrid spelling...
Fletcher winked at Danika to show he understood her message. Uh huh. Yeah. He'd meet up with her after class. Sure. She was smart. They could "study" together. Easy po cheesy.
Fletcher turned in his seat, surprised that he was the one being tapped now. Oh, but it was Rae! Awesome. They had been great DADA partners last term.
He gave her a wassupwassup manly head nod and a wink, you know, as all the cool guys do. And then he spotted yet another one of his many girl....friends in the class too.
Oooh heyyyyy girl heyyyy Sandra! Fletcher mouthed, "You. Me. Later." at her and wiggled his eyebrows for emphasis. Cheyaaaaa she remembered him from the feast.... surely....
Fletcher straightened up in his seat momentarily when the professor... er... Headmaster....? HeadProfessor? Professor Tot? Head Tater? Lord Vader? Lord Vadertot? Whatever. When the dude in charge addressed him, Fletcher couldn't resist flashing his trademark crooked grin.
"Yeah sorry 'bout that. I agree with you sir, unless you friends are with you in detention." And earning one of those was his goal for this term. Just not with Sir Tot. Er, TaterVader. He wanted a detention with the Tiger!Lady CoMC Professor. Or the hottie that taught charms. Yeahhhh.
But back to class. He liked DaDA generally.
"It means," Fletcher piped up loudly, waving his hand about, "that you must always be practicing CONSTANT VIGILANCE!"
He slammed his fist down on his desk for emphasis and knocked his own bag off the edge in the process. "You should strike down your enemy before he strikes you! Be the best! On your toes! If you're not first you're last!"
That somehow made more sense in his head than outside it. But hey, at least he was participating, right?

But then the boy was shouting about vigilance. Surprise of the century... Fluffy!Puff had something to contribute. Perhaps he wasn't holding an oxygen supply under his well-coiffed hair.
"It sounds like we generally agree on how to interpret this quote, although there are some of you with some REALLY disturbing and violent tendencies." Like Destiny karate chopping people and Lina drawing up battle plans. He'd be watching those two.
For recruitment, of course.
"We all generally agree that being proactive, making plans, being vigilant, as GlitterPuff says, all of this is important aspects of defensive thinking. In order to be defensive... we have to be prepared. We have to be thinking about what is coming at us, expecting the worst."
"Hold that thought," Tate smiled slightly at Kellen's response. You couldn't win a duel with Protego alone, but it was an important spell, especially for the youngest students in this class.

We're putting Mama Ern to bed... and Tate too. Please remember that answering the question is GOOD. WE LIKE THAT. But please no chatting. We shall resume at about 5/6 pm EST tomorrow.

He was still staring at the man, slack-jawed and all, until he DELIBERATELY mentioned Fletcher by the name of GlitterPuff. He was so suddenly upset by the horrendous name that he almost (almost) didn't even notice Sandra noticing him noticing her! GASP!
For the love of tea time and hot buttered scones! "Sir, sir, my name is Fletcher, just for future reference. And I hate glitter."
It was right up there on his list of disgusting girly thigs, like giggling, unnecessarily large purses and lip gloss that smelled good but tasted bad.
But to stay on topic, to impress those Durmstrang girls, Fletcher raised his hand again with an idea. "Well, to be one step ahead of your enemy and prepared for whatever they might throw at you, you should always, always gaze at your handy dandy crystal ball before you duel them to see what spells they'll cast and what the outcome will be. Then, you can even place a wager on the outcome of the duel so you'll win AND be handsomely rewarded."
Brilliant idea if he did say so himself. "And you should always, you know, be taking good care of your wand so it works properly and if you own an invisibility cloak, keep that on your person at all times along with some Peruvian Instant Darkness Powder for a quick escape." Genius!
"Oh, and uh," Fletcher's arm was getting tired from his smart but long-winded answer, "be resourceful and mindful of your surroundings while dueling." He was just assuming this was in a hypothetical duel for some lady's honor, right? "Because you might just come across something that could make the difference, like a stack of freshly-filled water balloons for a sneak attack to your enemy's face."
Rae was listening to everyone else's response when she looked at Fletcher, shouting CONSTANT VIGILANCE and pounding his fist on the desk. It was times like this that reminded Rae of why she was friends with this kid. His outburst made Rae laugh on the inside. And when he mentioned having friends in detention with him, Rae knew she was on that list. After all, they were mischief buddies right?
Right, another question. Rae can at least try to answer this? Even if she will make herself look stupid. Why can't she just be in Transfiguration? She raised her hand slowly and hesitantly "Er.... Well maybe having a plan of not planning... If that made any sense. I mean, Do things you normally don't do, to make yourself unpredictable and to catch your enemy off guard... Right?" Most likely wrong..
GlitterPuffHAHAHAHAHAH! Rae listened to Fletcher's outrage and then his answer all while trying to hold in her laughter. She even had to burry her face in her arms on top the desk in order to keep herself from laughing uncontrollably. Yes, she needed to be around Fletcher more, this year would be a lot easier with him around. Though now he seemed to busy with all those girls. Eesh,

"Now, let's continue in this train of thought for a moment. How can we 'be prepared' as the Muggle Scouts say? As the GlitterPuff says... how can we be vigilant?"
Muggle scouts? She had no idea what the headmaster was referencing to. Muggles held no interest to Sandra.
After a few students gave their answers, she figured this was as good a time as any to chime in. Letting the strand of hair fall on her shoulders, she spared Fletcher an amused look before turning her gaze to Tate and raising her hand.
Water balloons. He was cute.
"Like some of your students have already stated, one should alvays be avare of their surroundings. If it is possible, you should get to knov your opponent and their style of dueling. Do they counter more than they defend? Defend more than attack?" Her eyes briefly flicked towards Fletcher. "It also would not be wise to put your trust in a crystal ball or predictions. The future is fickle, one simple action can prove said prediction wrong and cost the dueler more than a few galleons." She didn't know if the boy was serious in his response or not, but either way she didn't agree with it. Sandra wasn't one to put her faith in the future.
Plus she would hate to see something happen to that pretty face of his.
"Now, let's continue in this train of thought for a moment. How can we 'be prepared' as the Muggle Scouts say? As the GlitterPuff says... how can we be vigilant?"
Brittany raised her hand nervously. She had yet to contribute so this was as good as anytime. "Well you should always know your own strength and weakness. Dont ever put yourself into a predicament that you know you will fail in. You also should know your opponents strengths and weakness. Study them from the moment you see them. From the way they stand to the way that they move so you can know how you should move." She said. Brittany hoped she wasnt embarrasing herself and the headmaster... Uh professor understood what she was saying. "And i know it might sounds crazy but you should never trust people to do the right thing. Always look out for trouble from everyone because it could be your best friend that betrays you." she said finally growing quiet and hoping beyond belief that everyone wasnt staring at her

Marie thought about this one a little before attempting to answer it. She had no clue what a Muggle Scout was but she did know how to be prepared. Raising her hand she said, "Never let your guard down. Always expect the unexpected and always be aware of your surroundings... Even if you think you are in a danger free zone." Yep, one could never tell when someone might jump out at you and yell BOO!
They were talking about violence. Well, Viy kinda knew a bit about that. Not that she fought with people regularly, though. Not at all. Just the occasional pushing into Lakes and the like. *GIGGLE*. Constant Viligance? What was THAT? She was pretty sure some famous, dead guy had said it. Dumbledore? No, no way. Moody! Mad Eye Moody! He'd said it. And now Tatertot was asking them how they could stay vigilant all the tiime. Thinking hard, Viky eventually raised her hand.
'For a start, you make sure your opponent isn't bigger than you. Because if your magic fails to defeat them, there's always the muggle way' and if your opponent is bigger, that's not gonna work either. Haha. And now she was going to be serious 'But you should always carry your wand. Practise spells when you can. And if you end up in duel, don't try out spells you don't know? Because you might not do it properly, and it could backfire or go wrong'

Jack sat in a desk in the back, trying to stop himself from putting his feet up on the table. No, he should be relaxed in a DADA class, not when the Professor was talking about keeping on the lookout of dark wizards who may come around the corner and kill you or something. And the guy who looked a lot like him kept shouting, which made Jack jump once or twice.
"... maybe always having your wand on you? So that you're always 'armed' if someone tries to jump you.." But Jack didn't really agree with 'a good defense is a good offense', since it kind of defeats the object of being a defense, since it's become on offense. Siiiigh. "But like, don't get borderline paranoid that there's a dark wizard around every corner."

From her seat at the back, Lori had just sat silent and listened to Mr Head!Professor!Sir!Dude-Person, and her classmates. For one, she was just noting stuff down, answers and things, explanations and such. Some of things she already knew, for there was always time to recooperate your view and knowledge on things with others explanations and opinions.
Always time.
Her head tilted slightly, and she frowned over at that nooiiiiiisssyyy Hufflepuff. She had mind to go and hit him with her heel. He was portraying their house as a loud, uncontrolled mess of children. And no, they were NOT! Certainly not with Lorelai in their ranks, obviously. Hufflepuffs were dignified, and they had a sense of gli--
GLITTERPUFF?! Snorting a little at that, Lorelaishook her head; that poor boy would never live this down, bless him. Not that she wouldn't be encouraging the first years to call him it. She might just track him down and give him a pot of her glitter, actually, just to make him feel at h-HE DIDNT LIKE GLITTER?!
Scandal.
OH, IDIOT BOY WAS SO MEEEEEEAN TO GLITTER.
"Glitter's pretty, actually." She informed herself in a whisper. Might aswell keep her own glitter spirits up.
"Practice, Professor!Sir!Headmaster! To be prepared, one must not only know how to defend themselves, but must have the skill to perform necessary spells. Say for example... I was a first year, didn't know many spells, but found myself in danger? You'd have to use what you got, right? It's not first years fault that they're all little and don't know as much as most other older students. Just unfortunate. BUT, say they had had a lesson practicing saaaaaaay.... The stunning spell. Then if they knew the basics, sure they'd be fine. But if they practiced and practiced to perfect -obviously not on people, because that's just plain wrong- then their hope would be of a better chance.... Right?" because that had sounded right in her head and wrong out loud.
"But if so, you could always rely on a heel to attack your opponent. A nice, high, sharp, bruise enducing, nightmare bringing, fear serving heel." Which, of course was a skill and needed perfecting.
Taylor was taking notes and listening to the professor and the other students. "Practicing your spells is a good way to be prepared. And also be aware of your surroundings." She said.

Cedric wanted to answer but remained silent nonetheless. He just wasn't in the mood to answer. And his classmates had probably mentioned all the possible answers anyway.
He slouched lower in his downright hard seat, determined to shut his mouth up in the moment. But then ideas incessantly shed through his mind. They weren't wild or bright ideas but still they were ideas and so, he felt the need to say it to the whole class.
Upon raising his hand, and sitting upright, Cedric answered in an earnest tone, "To be vigilant is to stay watchful and alert at all times. To be vigilant, we must be a keen observant even to the most intricate, subtlest details, with a vision to our action's outcomes and is always on guard for jeopardy or perils. And above all that, to be vigilant, you must want to be vigilant."
Now, 'nough of all that 'vigilants'. He was sorta tired of the said word.
And could someone give him popcorn? It was fun watching Fletchy and the Headmaster. It was like a movie scene. Specifically, it was like a scene in a movie where a terror teacher ceaselessly spanked his screwy student with a stick. But in screwy!Fletcher's case, he hadn't been whacked by the headmaster with a stick but rather stabbed by the man's needle-sharp, menacing words. Tragic, right?
"Now, let's continue in this train of thought for a moment. How can we 'be prepared' as the Muggle Scouts say? As the GlitterPuff says... how can we be vigilant?"
Freya raised her hand nervously "Well. First of all we've to know your own strength and weakness. So when we faced our opponent you could cover up your weakness with your strength. Second, we have to watch our surrounding and stayed alert all the time we never know what's waiting for use if don't stayed alert and watch our surrounding. And the most important thing is we must know what we against of." she said
How can we be vigilant?
That was the question.
And the answer..?
"Alertness. We should always be on the look out in our surroundings, you know keep a watchful eye on anything suspicious. And I guess figuring out the weak spots and training well can be part of it too.." Dianna said as she let down her hand.

Shaking off the last of his daze, Salander took a quick glance around the room and raised his head in silent greeting Mia! Evelyn! Little Sophia! and even the Durmstrang girl... Aleksandra sumthin. Then he cast a wary eye on Diggy and that other mysteriously popping Gryffindor that sat a little tooo close to him at the Opening Feast-- whoever he was.
And of course, the great Glitter!Puff had to speak and was duly called at, from which Salander bowed his head so low to keep himself for guffawing loudly in the room. Glitter!Fletcher heh.

Salander leaned forward and crossed his arms on the table and replied "Practicing your moves-- but not just any moves, these have to be techniques that have proven to be the most effective in achieving your purpose, whether its trying to take down an enemy or defending yourself from an onslaught. In fact it would be better to learn these from a Pro, only they would be able to show you the subtle advantages of using a particular stance or wand gestures-- or better yet-- an even improved variation of the "standard". Certainly a lot better than practicing something straight from the textbook, which can be incredibly structured and oftentimes much too theoretical for real live defense/ offense."
He flicked his eyes onto the floor, trying to pull together how he could best answer the next question "One of the best way to keep vigilance is to maintain presence of mind. If you have presence of mind, all your five senses-- sight, sound, touch, taste, smell-- is immediately heightened. In fact, presence of mind may also activate the much debated "sixth sense" some refer to this as "intuition", or the "gut feeling". This 6th sense is said to be able to detect threats before any physical manifestation presents itself from which only your 5 senses will kick in. Sometimes its only that which separates someone from getting out alive in the nick of time and ending up dead on the spot."
The he added "Vigilance is also greatly helped by learning from previous experiences, it teaches you to recognize tell tale signs of what you're about to face, or what can happen next. After all there is a saying, 'Knowing your enemy is winning half the battle'."

Neptune Bott S T A R E D as Lina, the true definition of Dark DARED to address her. The only reason Neptune figured Lina was even HERE in this class was for Mr. Tate to use an example of a Dark creature feature.
Neptune would have had shackled her. That would have been vigilant. And pleasing.

Her blue peacock feather, SPARKLY and blue, rose up to indicate she was ready to give her answer, "Mr. Tate, I think vigilance is achieved in pairs." At this, Neptune tilted her head towards Kellen, leaning as far she dared so that her hair just nearly brushed his arm. "You know, keep people you trust in your vicinity. Human shields, I guess. Heroes." GIGGLE. "People that have your back."
Cameron frowned. Teachers alwaaaaaays started their lessons with a heap of questions. Borrrrrrring. But she maintained that slightly interested - but not really - face and doodled idly with her pencil. Man.. talk about dreary. She was pretty sure her brain was turning to mush. Oh.. lookit! It was the Durmstrang girl. Smiling in her direction she propped her chin on her palm and watched Tate. Maybe to answer the next question?
Vigilance? "Doesn't that also mean that we need to have a certain degree of like.. um.. knowledge of ourselves too? I mean.. to be prepared you have to be able to judge your own ability compared to your opponents. right?" Cameron knew SHE didn't want to go off dueling someone like.. Trixie. Or god forbid.. Raven. She knew her limits.

Cass held back her giggle at the word...Glitterpuff. Then she rested her chin on her palm and started thinking. after a few minutes her hand shot up in the air and she said "Alarms are always a good way to keep constant vigilance. Like Caterwauling Charms or the spell Cave Inimicum."
Lexi raised her hand and fought the urge to giggle at Tatertot before saying, "Sir, we can always practice both offensive and defensice spells regularly. I think that is the key to success, being able to both protect ourself and take out the other guy... or girl." Yeah she was all about learning BOTH sides of a duel.
