The reason for this lesson to be held downstairs near the Kitchens is something only Professors Hadley and Zookara know. Talking of whom, the two are both standing near the teacher's desk in the front of the classroom, talking quietly to each other, while waiting for the students to arrive. This is a simple room which has been slightly refurbished, leaving it looking like a normal classroom, had there not been the constant delicious smell from the nearby kitchen.
Please take a seat, and refrain from excessive chatting, the lesson will begin shortly.
OOC: The lesson has now officially started. Any late arrivals risk losing house points, just pretend you've been here all along. Make sure to be familiar with both the rules for Arithmancy and Muggle Studies.

Less numbers adding together at one time, ultimately would be the end result. Which meant less chances for accidentally missing a number . . . or something.
Kurumi looked up from her work and blushed red like a tomato. The professor did have a point, but she was just used to adding things up in a straight line without breaking things down into smaller parts - at least, that is how she had been trained to do math in her muggle school. Kurumi nodded to the professor shyly and wondered if she should completely start over when she looked back at the board to see that the professor had broken things down into smaller bits...She was pretty sure she had done the calculations correctly...but now she was freaking out, on the inside of course. "P-P-Professor...are my calculations wrong?" she asked in a timid voice.
Kurumi flew back to her parchment and scratched out her previous work to mimic the method the professor had written on the board.

Freya let out a small sighed, she never good at juggling numbers. She took out piece of parchment and a quill from her back before she began scribing her Pythagorean and Telephone Number. "Better be done with it then" she muttered to herself.
Cass hadn't been paying any attention to the class....she felt terribly about it...she just wasn't feeling like herself lately. Then she noticed that her classmates started writing on their parchments, so that would mean there was an activity. She looked up from her own blank piece of parchment and saw that there was an example of the activity on the board. She sighed softly before reaching for her quill.

As they started the arithmancy discussion, Grayson had started sort of doodling in her notes. Not to the extent that she wasn't paying attention, but at least she was doing something. And besides, she somewhat knew about the expression number and all that. From reading, and getting bored enough to do random calculations. But a faint grin had crept onto her face at Salander's question about what they needed to use name-wise. Oh, she knew where that had come from, even if it seemed Professor Hadley didn't. Or the professor just didn't care. Either way it was amusing to her, and reminded her of violins again.
But then they were really officially expected to do their own calculations, and she let herself get back to a more serious mode. And flipped to a clean sheet of paper. No need to use her doodled paper for this, especially if her work would be examined at some point. Then she started scribbling.
As she finished, she raised her hand. "Professor Hadley? Do master numbers count with the telephone system?" if she wasn't mistaken, eleven was one of those, and she definitely had an eleven in there.

So...calculations time with not one but two number systems. Well this would be interesting, wouldn't it? Vashti wondered briefly what her numbers would end up being and if it was possible to get the same one for both. That'd be cool.
Picking up her quill, Vashti began working out the equations.
SPOILER!!: Vashti's parchment

Well, they weren't the same. Not that she'd really expected them to be, but it would've been neat if they were, wouldn't it? Vashti set her quill down, waiting for whatever they would be doing next.

Ok, that took a while....
Salander finally looked up from his parchment, trying to squeeze the creak out of his neck. It took that long to finish writing his name as stated on his birth certificate, coding them into the respective number system, adding and reducing the numbers down as the Professor requested.
He looked to Grayson's question and raised a weary hand "Same question here Professor. I've had 11 come up several times, and in the Pythagorean system, the final sum was 11 as well, unless you want us to reduce it further to 2? "

Too many numbers make Destiny a wonky girl.
She'd much rather listen to Professor Zoocarcass talk about the teph-a-lone than figure out whatever it was she was supposed to figure out. Pulling out a piece of parchment, because up until that point she didn't need any, she got to work figuring this stuff out. Too bad she didn't share her whole name with Evelyn. Would have made this a LOT easier.
SPOILER!!: Destiny's Pythagorean Number Work Stuff
Aw right, the telliphone numbers. What did their expression number using that muggle device's numbers have to do with anything though? It was just the one that was using the Pythagorean number system that really mattered right? Or..maybe not. Who knows.
The professor knew, but Evelyn didn't feel like asking. Not when everything lapsed into silence...unless it was Salander who was talking. Hehe, long name?
Glancing down to her notebook, she decided to just use another page since this one was full of pointless drawings and such, and took up too much space. New page then! Pausing with the twirling licorice act, Evelyn leaned forward and started on the calculations. Meh, it failed that she had to use just her regular last name. Pfft.
Josephina walked around the room, nodding as she checked the students work; it was rather tedious but there were certain things - after doing this for years - that begin to jump out at you when you realize how blatantly wrong the answer was.
That was not the case with some of these brilliant future Arithmancy experts. "Nice work, girls" she said approvingly, before moving onto the next.

Oh this girl was panicking! Such a young, overachieving mind; much like Fina when she was younger. The girl's worries got the best of her as she set to reworking her calculations. "No, you're not wrong, as you can see, it makes no difference, but I personally find it easier and less room for error if you simplify each name down to a single digit before adding them together. Smaller numbers are much easier to work with, wouldn't you agree?"

Blatant errors that stood out on the page, like this particular Slytherin's work. "My dear! Your calculations are soooo very close to being correct, except on both systems, you misadded the final numbers. Take the first one for instance, you added 1, 6, and 3, which does in fact equal 10, not 11. Good effort though just be sure to pay attention to details throughout the whole calculation not just the beginning."

"Please check your addition on that particular system especially, as I think you'll find the number to be incorrect. Good work otherwise though"

Ah Ravenclaws; Josephina was sure that the fourth year had a number of questions turning in her brain - like what was the point of doing this with the telephone number system? Or does this even matter? But that wasn't the question that was asked.
"Miss Kelly," Fina addressed, mostly to bide her time with creating a thoughtful answer. "Master numbers are only of relevance if it is the number before directly before you reduce to a single digit. For instance, the number eleven needs to appear right before you reduce to the final answer. If it is just one of the components in one name, then it bears no significance and is just, ultimately, another number."

"Like I've said to Miss Kelly, the number 11 only matters when it comes as the final sum. So you should present your answer as eleven slash two, because it is significant, particular for the core numbers to get a master number for your final sum, as your interpretation will read different from just an ordinary two."

THERE done. FINALLY. Legend rested his head agaisnt the desk. He didn't care if people had finished way before him. LOOOK what he had to do. The Gryffindor didn't even care if some stuff were wrong.
Josephina had to admit she was surprised to see Legend Chosen attempting the calculations; especially after he had tried to coerce her into giving him a slide on doing pretty much any sort of work. Overlooking his calculations, she understood why. Six names, true, but they were all short, minus the first two names. But even they weren't as long as Salander's name who had FIVE names and pretty much all were long, and yet Salander wasn't complaining and his calculations were correct.
"Mr Chosen . . ." She began, making it seem like she was displeased. Which she was, sort of, that he was complaining, when he had little to complain over compared to Salander. Perhaps the two could partner when it was necessary to do some calculations in the future? "I am impressed, first of all. And secondly, in the Pythagorean calculation, on your fourth name, you've made a minor error, as it should be 8, not 5. The extra 3 point difference would bring the final sum to 28, which makes your number a 1." Which actually, from her memory, fit nicely with what Katie had said in her office about him wanting to be king... Or in other words, a leader.
Moving on though, Josephina glanced sideways at the clock. OH NOES! They've ran over the time limit for the lesson! "Sorry to disappoint you all," she looked over at her colleague, Professor Zookara for a moment before turning back and continuing. "But unfortunately we are out of time and the lesson has to draw to a close. Lucky for you guys too, we've decided to NOT give you any homework. However the material presented to you in this lesson is fair game for either the Muggle Studies or Arithmancy final, so don't throw away those notes. Class dismissed."

Cass sighed mentally. Of course she was wrong. She and numbers didn't go together and it would be silly to pretend otherwise...but she wanted to pass this class, so even if it took a million tries, she was going to get this right. So without another word, she set aside the parchment with the wrong answers and brought out a new one to start on a new set of numbers.

Cass looked down on her paper and noticed that it was only bigger by one. her previous answer was 8 and now it was 9. She hoped she was right this time.
Then she looked down once again on her parchment and decided that she should also redo her telephone method. So she dipped her quill into her pot of ink once again and bent low over her parchment.
When Cass had finished, she was surprised when she saw that she had come up with the same number as her previous answer. "Well, my answer was probably right the first time, or I'm wrong again the second time." She said to herself as she placed her quill back into the ink well. Oh well. Here goes nothing.

Hearing the girl mutter about being right the first time, Josephina nodded; she was correct on the second problem. "Much better," She replied in satisfaction of the girl's work. "It's just minor attention to details, but nothing I'd really stress yourself over. It takes time and practice." Something she had many years of; "Good day, Miss Prewett"

And what in the name of Merlin was Professor Zookara smiling like that about? Honestly, no one ever smiled like that unless they had flatulence issues... Which was possible, but seriously? Must he show it off? Shaking her head at him, she stifled a chuckle as the students filed from the room. Edging closer to him, she whispered at him, "What's so funny, Jere?" Cause she liked jokes too.
