The reason for this lesson to be held downstairs near the Kitchens is something only Professors Hadley and Zookara know. Talking of whom, the two are both standing near the teacher's desk in the front of the classroom, talking quietly to each other, while waiting for the students to arrive. This is a simple room which has been slightly refurbished, leaving it looking like a normal classroom, had there not been the constant delicious smell from the nearby kitchen.
Please take a seat, and refrain from excessive chatting, the lesson will begin shortly.
OOC: The lesson has now officially started. Any late arrivals risk losing house points, just pretend you've been here all along. Make sure to be familiar with both the rules for Arithmancy and Muggle Studies.
Emmy's hand shot up instanrly, and she replied,
"The entire phone is the handset professor - whether it be a touchscreen, flip phone, or an ordinary old fashioned mobile, like the Sony Ericsson K770i..."
"Uuuuummm isnt the whole mobile the handset? It depends on what mobile you have",Fee said.
Iphone par example had no handset in particular. The whole thing was thr handset.
But whats with older mobiles?!
★ BabyQuad ★ PERRY THE PLATYPUS ★ Ern's Fave ★ dangerous with brooms ★
Legend wanted to go to sleep. Honestly. Wasn't Muggle Studies usually more interesting? THIS is what happened with you mixed Artihmancy and Muggle Studies together.
You got a big ball of boring.
The Gryffindor raised his hand as he leaned back in the chair. "That is a trick question. In mobile or cell phones or whatever you want to call them. The handset is the phone. That is because there is no base, and it's MOBILE so they have to make it simple as easy to take around." There. Could he go to sleep now?

"The entire phone is called a handset Professor, whether its a candy-bar shaped or the clam-shell model." at least thats what this Slytherin lad thought.

"Professor...in the case of your iPhone, isn't the entire body the handset?" Kurumi asked pointing at the iPhone that could fit in ones hands. "In the case of my phone," she further explaining taking her's out of her robe's pocket and setting it on the table. "This bottom part is the handset and the top part that opens up it the earphone." At least, she thought that was correct...
Heh. Weren't they just a clever bunch? He nodded as several people answered correctly, a small grin playing around his lips. "Yes, well done. In this case one could say the whole cell phone-" He held up the iPhone and wiggled it around a couple of times. "-is the head set." Yes, simple answer.
Just as he was about to step back to allow Pepper!Fina to continue, he noticed something pink out of the corner of his eyes. Something pink which was being held up. Held up by Kurumi. It was...his sister would have squealed with delight probably. "Yes, exactly, thank you Kurumi." Jeremy nodded with a grin, making a mental note on how the phone had looked like so he could get one for Al for her birthday.
"Now, thank you for your attention and participation. It is now time for the Arithmancy part of the lesson."Dundundun. With a grin to his colleague Jeremy moved backwards until his back hit the teacher's desk and he went to sit on it, waiting for her to take over.

Josephina had been pacing quietly in the front corner of the room, eying her colleague as she breathed in and out. She didn't know why she was feeling nervous; wasn't like this was her first lesson ever teaching. Nor was it her first time around Zookara. Perhaps it was the long-awaited part where it was her turn to do the lesson that was getting her nervous? Yes, the waiting.
At long last, he turned the lesson over to her for the Arithmancy portion. "Thank you, Professor Zookara," Fina said politely, as she nodded subtly in his direction. Turning her attention on the class, she gave a small smile before beginning. "You all are probably wondering, 'what in the world does this strange muggle communication device have to do with numbers?'" It was a simple enough question and totally legit.
"If you all look carefully at each of the numbers on here, you'll notice that the numbers two through nine have letters next to them. For those of you who took my class last term, you might remember the lesson on Cryptomancy." She paused allowing them to think back to a year or so ago. "Well with this lesson I wanted to touch on a different style of cryptic messages, as well as possibly trying some variations on common calculations." Flicking her wand, the chart appeared on the board with each number and they're corresponding letters:
"As a warm up, I want you to convert the following numbers into words using the phone as our 'number system'." Josephina flicked her wand again as some words/phrases appeared on the board below the number system:
ooc: Please do just one - to give others a chance - and have your character raise their hand and speak it out. Points are first correct answer for this particular question (but I will take points if you post more than one answer ;D)

Ooooh! A puzzle! Kurumi really liked puzzles. Maybe they were going to calculate their heart numbers or perhaps their personality number's later? Or was this going to be a class with a strange version of Morris Code?
Kurumi flew to her parchment as she began trying to crack the code.
Kurumi raised her hand. "Professor, I believe that the 3663 47 5683 line should be 'FOOD IS LOVE'?" She was pretty sure that 47 had to be IS as no other two letter words could be made with those combinations...were they going to eat something? Like...maybe have an end of the year party?

Evelyn was beginning to think they’d never get to the arithmancy part. The actually part of the lesson she’d really understand. Fones and owls…it was just all mumbo jumbo in her mind at the moment, and she had nooooooo idea what was going on until now.
But now that they were, she was beginning to feel a bit more comfortable. They were going to go onto cryptic messages again? With the numbers on phones? Glancing towards the chart on the board, a small smile appeared on her lips as the numbers and letters flew through her mind.
Writing down the phrases into her notebook, including the number system type thing, the Slytherin started with the calculations until she was finished. It didn't take long. She rather liked cryptic messages.
Raising her hand after...cookie girl...Evelyn raised a brow before going on with her answer. "The last phrase, is it...'Can I go yet?'"

Humph. Puzzle and number? Freya never good at these two things. She always get stuck when juggling number. She let out a small piece of parchment and a quill from her bag to write down the number and possible answer. She raised her hand when she finished the puzzle. "Professor, The second one is it Zookara?" she said not so sure.

Whoah numbers... here we go.... the lad winced as he scribbled a set on his parchment...
8447 47 386!
It took him a while to figure it out but he got it eventually " Professor that fourth one reads This is fun!" Or This is dum... hmmm double meanings to a code?

Gah! Cryptomancy again! Vashti wasn't very fond of it, but of course she was going to try figuring at least one of the lines out. She wrote down the first line on her paper as well as the letters that corresponded to each number, then tried working it out until...
She raised her hand. "I think the first line is 'Hadley,' Professor."

Oh figures that one of her best students would solve THAT particular code; though she doubted that Evelyn really wanted to go, but was simply answering the question. "No you may not go, but yes, that is the correct phrase for the last one," she winked at the girl, tossing her a piece of licorice. Mostly because she got the impression the girl wasn't fond of chocolate.

The brunette looked over at her colleague, a small smile on her face and then turned back to the girl, with a nod. Of course she would use the Professor's names. They were simple enough to solve AND the students should all know those names. "Quite right, my dear." She said simply, tossing a chocoball in her direction.

Noting the scrupulous scribblings of another Slytherin, Josephina wasn't about to deny it that Slytherins were on TOP of THEIR GAME. Like seriously. "Yes, I quite agree and am glad to see someone else sharing my affinity for codes." She beamed at the fourth year, tossing him a jelly slug.

Of course the first code would be the last to be solved, but no less wrong, as it was naturally her OWN name. "Of course, quite right," she said, tossing the last girl a chocoball as well.
Time to move on though, as it seemed they were all warming up nicely to these numbers and their new letter assignments. Smart kids. "Excellent. But sadly we're not going to spend much time on codes. I just wanted to show you all another example of how codes could be used and how different they could be," Fina continued, pacing slightly. "Now thinking about how you calculate your four core numbers, there is one core number that will not change no matter if you used the telephone number system or the Pythagorean. Can someone tell me what that number is?"

Hehe, well...no, she didn't want to leave Arithmancy class. It was a favorite of hers of course, though she wouldn't mind leaving Muggle Studies. Why did they have to combine the two? It just...ruined it.
A rather small smile appeared on her lips as she was given licorice instead of chocolate. Thank Merlin at least one professor noticed she didn't like that horrid sweet that made Destiny go crazy and ride sheep like they were horses. Twirling the piece of candy around on her desk, her gaze moved back to the Professor as she asked a question. Meep!
"That is...the Life Path number." she said after raising her hand, before going back to twirling the piece of licorice.
Riley had to think for a little bit on this question. He eyed the Professor intently, hoping that something in that face would give the answer away but sadly he was not able to get Arithmancy help from body language and the boy was far from a mind reader so he popped open his textbook and quickly looked up the different types of numbers until he was able to find the one he was looking for. "Umm Professor, I think the one you are talking about is the Life Path Number, it won't change if you use the Pathagorean." he nodded matter-of-factly.

Catching the chocoball, Kurumi's first instinct was to question whether this was normal chocolate or something crazy...was it going to turn into an armadillo or something? She set it down on the table and watched it for a few moments. She even took out her wand and poked it. Nothing. Phew, just normal chocolate. She then stuck it in her robe pocket to save for later. There may be a maze coming up...or something more complicated... and she was going to need a sugar boost.
As the conversation changed to core numbers and...Pytha...pytho...pythu...well, pyth something, Kurumi decided to just sit back and listen with her parchment and quill ready for notes.

Noticing the content look on Evelyn's face when she received the chocolate, Josephina knew she had won the girl over. Granted the girl's affinity for Arithmancy wasn't going to hurt anything, but also being attentive to the girl's likes [and anyone's really] wasn't going to hurt anything.
Hearing her and then a boy - Gryffindor one - speak up on the subject as Life Path number being the one that didn't change, she nodded in agreement. "Yes, that is correct to the both of you," Fina replied. "The Life Path number is calculated using other numbers, rather than letters to numbers, so it doesn't matter what system you're using, it will indeed remain the same."

Noting confusion on a typically active student in her classes this term, Fina blinked a moment or two at the girl, before realizing she probably hadn't reviewed her core numbers. One of the hardest issues for a subject like Arithmancy and teaching to a variety of years was that there were always new students incoming each year who hadn't done last year's numbers.
"It seems some of you are struck by confusion as to what I'm talking about," Fina continued, giving a small smile in the young, but intuitive girl's direction. "Just as a quick review, I was referring to the Pythagorean Number System, which is discussed in chapter two of your textbooks. The number we will specifically work with during the lesson will be your Expression Numbers, which is in chapter seven of your texts.
Can someone please tell me how this number is found?"

Well it was beyond her that someone was confused. Then again, not everyone read their books before the school year or lessons. Tapping her pencil with one hand, and continuing to twirl the licorice with her other hand, her eyes scanned her notes that she had written so far. Something about a phone being annoying, her equations for deciphering the phrases using the telephone numbers, a drawing of an owl…
And another question was being asked. How was the expression number found? Meep! Raising her hand that held her pencil, because obviously she wasn’t going to advertise her awesome candy licorice, the Slytherin smiled just a tad once more before answering. "You use your full name. The one on your birth certificate." That everyone should know. Obviously. "And using the Pythagorean number system, you assign the letters of your name with the correct number before adding up the numbers of each name separately…first…before reducing and adding up the total of each name altogether." Slightly long explanation, but whatever. It’s what had to be done. Oh… "And then reduce the last number."

"Precisely, Miss Flores-Shepard! I couldn't have said it better myself," Josephina nodded at the Slytherin girl. "Except one minor detail. Not only today are we going to calculate our Expression Numbers using the Pythagorean System, but we're going to use the Telephone number system as well."
Turning around, she wrote her full name on the board as an example:
Turning back around to face the front, she pointed at her names as the example. "So as you can see clearly, the numbers are VERY different between the two systems. All I need for you to do now during class is to calculate your expression numbers using the two systems."

Marie watched the professor figure her numbers. This was something she would have no problem doing, Marie found this class rather easy, unlike Astronomy, now that class just confused the heck out of her.
After writing the number systems down she wrote her name then got busy figuring out her numbers.

Noting a raised hand, Josephina nodded at him as she listened to his question. Valid point and sure to be one that others - particularly those new to Arithmancy would have question over. "Full names as in your birth name. Your name on your birth certificate would do just fine." Because that was they're legal names which was what counted and they should all know those names.

Looking over the young first year's work, she nodded in approval. "It doesn't really appear to make much difference, but the numbers are easier to work with and generally you avoid less chances for mistakes if you added the numbers in each name up first, reduce those two a single digit and then add those numbers together." Less numbers adding together at one time, ultimately would be the end result. Which meant less chances for accidentally missing a number . . . or something.

Merlin, Destiny was much better at Muggle Studies than Arithmancy. She didn't know how Evelyn could like this class so much and not only that, the girl understood it all!
Too many numbers make Destiny a wonky girl.
She'd much rather listen to Professor Zoocarcass talk about the teph-a-lone than figure out whatever it was she was supposed to figure out. Pulling out a piece of parchment, because up until that point she didn't need any, she got to work figuring this stuff out. Too bad she didn't share her whole name with Evelyn. Would have made this a LOT easier.

Aw right, the telliphone numbers. What did their expression number using that muggle device's numbers have to do with anything though? It was just the one that was using the Pythagorean number system that really mattered right? Or..maybe not. Who knows.
The professor knew, but Evelyn didn't feel like asking. Not when everything lapsed into silence...unless it was Salander who was talking. Hehe, long name?
Glancing down to her notebook, she decided to just use another page since this one was full of pointless drawings and such, and took up too much space. New page then! Pausing with the twirling licorice act, Evelyn leaned forward and started on the calculations. Meh, it failed that she had to use just her regular last name. Pfft.
