The reason for this lesson to be held downstairs near the Kitchens is something only Professors Hadley and Zookara know. Talking of whom, the two are both standing near the teacher's desk in the front of the classroom, talking quietly to each other, while waiting for the students to arrive. This is a simple room which has been slightly refurbished, leaving it looking like a normal classroom, had there not been the constant delicious smell from the nearby kitchen.
Please take a seat, and refrain from excessive chatting, the lesson will begin shortly.
OOC: The lesson has now officially started. Any late arrivals risk losing house points, just pretend you've been here all along. Make sure to be familiar with both the rules for Arithmancy and Muggle Studies.
Selena stared at the iPhone. Pretty... she wondered what music was on it... or if it had reception here. She wanted pizza. Or something. Hehehe. "The telephone was invented by Alexander Graham Bell, invented in 1874," she said after she raised her hand. Then she resumed staring at the iPhone her father wouldn't get her. They didn't want her calling weird strangers. Whatever.

"Well, most people believe that Sir Alexander Graham Bell invented the telephone, but that's not true - he just happened to get to the patent office first. I'm afraid I don't remember the name of the man who did invent it..."
Emmy was disappointed that she couldn't answer fully, but maybe someone else would.

Again, both of Keefer's hands waved in the air. The answer was quite interesting, since it was a story of controversy.
"Professor, in most of Europe, Meucci is officially considered the inventor of the telephone. But that makes sense, because he was from Europe. In the United States, people tend to think of Alexander Graham Bell as the inventor, though he was really one of two people to independently invent it. Actually, way back in June 2002, the United States government passed a symbolic bill officially recognizing Meucci as the foremost inventor of the telephone! It's like they were finally conceding it or something."
Oh, they were so clever. Jeremy refrained from grinning proudly at Fina but simply continued to smile at the class. "Correct to all of you who mentioned Charles Bourseul, Antonio Meucci, Johann Philipp Reis, Alexander Bell, Elisha Gray or Thomas Edison." He quickly flicked his wand at the board to make the names appear so they could copy them down if they wanted to. "Like I said, it is still unsure who exactly was the inventor of the electric telephone, however Bell was the first one to receive a patent for the invention of the telephone." At this he briefly gave Kurumi a small smile, who had mentioned Lewis Lattimer who had been helpful with said patent.
"Furthermore, Thomas Edison is probably one of the most famous of the previously mentioned, because he invented one very essential thing about the electrical telephone. The carbon microphone." He held up the respective part of the red telephone for everybody to see and pointed at the end closest to the cable to indicate that that was were the microphone was. "Can anybody of you tell me what this part of the telephone is called and what the other end is called and used for?" He nodded at said end, waiting for them to reply.

With both hands waving about in the air, Keefer looked like he was doing a dance--except, in his seat. But raising just one hand was no fun.
"I think that end is just called the microphone, but I could be way wrong. That's the part you speak into. And isn't the end you hear out of just called the earphone? That's the opposite end. It is where the other person's voice is projected for you to hear."
Then again, that could be totally wrong. He didn't remember ever hearing proper names for those parts.

Grayson had been quiet again, simply because it was odd to her discussing telephones in Hogwarts. Yes, it was Muggle Studies, but for some reason she'd never thought they'd talk about phones. Not to mention she still wasn't exactly sure how Arithmancy was going to work into the class. Other than phone numbers, and those didn't really say much about a person. It piqued her curiosity, though. To see how it all got brought together. But as Professor Zookara continued, she raised her hand. "Um, the whole thing is called a headset, I think. And the part where the microphone is is the mouthpiece, and the other's the earpiece," she said, a bit tentatively. It wasn't like she sat at home thinking about what parts of telephones were called. There were so many other things to do.

Wait...those parts had proper names? Kurumi always called them the speaking end and the listening end. Leave it to wizards to know more about her world than she did - why did it always seem to be the case. What sounded smart....hmmmm...Kurumi raised her hand. "Professor, I think that end is called the transmitter or microphone because it is where you speak and sound is sent. The other end is the receiver or speaker meaning that is where the sound arrives for us...erm...muggles to listen to." That made sense...whether or not it was correct was another story.

Amber was seriously lost. Why did she come to this lesson again? Oh yeah, her parents who think muggles are unimportant and not useful to humanity. She raised her hand uncertainly. "Umm... is it called the ear piece?" She'd seen a kid listening to a thin box with these strings sticking out of it. He had the strings in his ears and he was singing, so were those strings the same as this stick... thing?
"Well i dont know what its called but you speak into the lower half and you can hear what the other is saying in the upper half. With that you send the information you want to share."
Fee kinda knew about telephones but what that thing was called? No idea, she never really asked.Just using seemed fine, didnt it?!

That part of the teph-a-lone looked dangerous. It reminded her of one of those medieval flails, and if it was anything like that medieval flail, it could do some serious damage.
Destiny wanted to ask if she could hold it, you know, to get a better look at how the thing worked, but she doubted Professor Zoocarcass would trust her enough with it. Pfft, he had no reason not to trust her, though. She had successfully cracked a walnut with a Beater's Bat and left no damage..except to the walnut but that was the WHOLE point! So, now she had to guess what the thing did from afar since she wouldn't be able to hold it.
"Ugh, it's called a teph-a-lone." Didn't they discuss that already? "And I think you hold it to your ear and you can see the people talking to you."

Emmy's hand went up, slightly more slowly this time...
"I'm not sure, but I think the receiving end is called the amplifier? And that's the end that converts electrical pulses back into audible soundwaves, anyway."
Short answer, for once, but hopefully right...
Raising her hand Dianna tried her best in answering.
"I think that the top part of it is called a erm.. maybe an earpiece? That is the part where you can hear the person your speaking too. And the bottom is the mouthpiece? Where you can speak into.." she said as she lowered her hand.
Wait a minute wasn't that and iPhone? Hahaha..

"That's where you speak to.." She answered raising her hand, "And the upper part is where you hear from." He didn't want them to show the class that, right? Cool. Because that'd be not very exciting.
Hearing that girl's answer who wanted to see people through a pheletone, Louisa couldn't help supressing her little giggle. Now that girl was a really funny and.. way too magical than others.

"Well the piece towards the bottom is the part that you speak in to, and the top piece is where you hear the voice of the person you are talking to. As to their technical terms, I am not exactly sure what they are called." Alice had never really thought too deeply into telephones, mostly because the whole communication process with them and the telephone wires, and individual numbers could get pretty complicated.

Salander tilted his head as he watched the Professor gesture towards the phone. It was a simple enough question, but got even the muggle-raise lad stumped. Hardly anybody even thinks about what the proper parts are called dont they? "That part where the cable is hanging off from-- thats the mouthpiece I think... the other end where you listen from is the earpiece. And that whole thing is called a handset."

Why the heck didn't she trust him that the thing was called a telephone and not a teff-alone, or whatever she wanted to call it?! Okay, this was Destiny here, so no need to answer that question. "No, it's te-le-phone." He pointed out every syllable of the word on the board as if talking to a five-year-old. "It doesn't have anything to do with grass or being alone." Because teff was some kind of grass, right? He might have to ask the Herbology professor about this one...
"No, you can't." Jeremy shook his head at her answer. Well, at least she had gotten the 'hold to your ear' part right. Destiny probably could have come up with something different there too...like sticking it up your nose and then you can smell the other person or something. So he should probably be glad that she at least had it semi-right. "You can HEAR the person you called. It's like..." Yes, what was it like? "Do you know what a walkie-talkie is?" Probably not, but it was worth a try.
Turning back to the rest of the class, he smiled at the many people who had answered correctly. "Yes, absolutely correct. This whole part of the telephone is called the handset, whereas the upper part-" He gestured towards the part not directly connected to the cable-thingie. "-is called the earphone where you can then hear the other person you are talking to." Yes, hear, not see. "The other side is called the microphone and is the part where you speak into so the person you are calling can hear you." More or less.
He reached behind him to pick up the iPhone lying on the table and held it up for the class to see. "Now, last question before Professor Hadley will continue with the lesson." Jeremy directed a grin at Fina before turning back to the class. "Where is the handset in this mobile phone?" Was this a trick question? Maybe.

Evelyn was lost. So so, very, very very lost.
She knew that the tellynose was totally annoying, but that was pretty much it. Some had buttons!? That would make it even more complicated! Wait, all of them had buttons right? Button...thingies...
And she had no idea what the professor was talking about. Walking-talking? Umm duh, everyone did that everyday. Walk and talk at the same time? It wasn't that hard. A little toddler could do it!! And they did! No matter how annoying and irritating and frightening they were, they were smart enough to do that.
But, back to the question. However, the Slytherin couldn't help but lean back away form the black little thing. It looked like a miniature version of the MUGGLE BOX! OMG! It was a hand held version of the thing that turned you into a MUGGLE!
Tellynoses and Muggle boxes are uniting! RUN for you LIVES! After....after class though. She didn't want to get a detention.
"It's not who you are that holds you back, it's who you think you are not."

Alice raised her one eyebrow...was this a trick question? "Well, with a mobile phone like that, the whole phone is the handset," Alice said, not sure if that was what he meant. "There is usually two little dots on the top so you can hear the person, and two at the bottom so the person can hear you. With a cell phone they aren't quite as separated as they are with a household phone like the one you were holding before."

"Professor...in the case of your iPhone, isn't the entire body the handset?" Kurumi asked pointing at the iPhone that could fit in ones hands. "In the case of my phone," she further explaining taking her's out of her robe's pocket and setting it on the table. "This bottom part is the handset and the top part that opens up it the earphone." At least, she thought that was correct...

Marie sat listening to everyone talk about the hello-phone thingy... and of course Destiny was arguing about what it was called. "Professor, you are both wrong, it is called a Hello-Phone." she said waving her hand in the air. Everyone should know it's a hello-phone. That's what you say when someone calls you right... Hello!
Well this was an easy question. She raised her hand again, "The handset is in your hand of course." Duh, where else would it be... In his pocket?
"That doesn't really have a handset does it? I mean it has the earphone on the top and the microphone at the bottom..And it's a touchscreen...Wait, so does that mean that the whole phone is the handset?" she was confused and was more likely asking than answering.
