Classroom Thirteen: Muggle Studies & Arithmancy Joint Lesson

Joint Lesson: Arithmu-Studies
The reason for this lesson to be held downstairs near the Kitchens is something only Professors Hadley and Zookara know. Talking of whom, the two are both standing near the teacher's desk in the front of the classroom, talking quietly to each other, while waiting for the students to arrive. This is a simple room which has been slightly refurbished, leaving it looking like a normal classroom, had there not been the constant delicious smell from the nearby kitchen.

Please take a seat, and refrain from excessive chatting, the lesson will begin shortly.

OOC: The lesson has now officially started. Any late arrivals risk losing house points, just pretend you've been here all along. Make sure to be familiar with both the rules for Arithmancy and Muggle Studies.

Adeline walked into the classroom. She didn't know much about aritchmancy, but she did want to give this a try. She knew mostly older kids were going to be here, so that made her nervous."Hello Proffesor Zookara and Proffesor Hadley. How are you?" she asked sweetly.

iBeJenn 10-11-2010 02:21 PM

Selena skipped into the classroom looking forward to the muggle part of this lesson, not the Arithmancy. Because really, who liked doing math? Pfffft. She had a smile on her face, courtesy of snicker bars and chocolate frogs, and waved at the professors. "Hello Professor Hadley and...." she started, then realizing she didn't know the other professor's name. Eep. Fail. "Zooooo....kara?" she said, hoping she was right. Mmm... hopefully so. Hehehe. "How are you two?" she asked.

Then she took a seat and sighed. She was hungry again... and she just ate. Why were they so close to the kitchens again? Selena was going to run right out later for fooood.

Bam chicka wa wa! Denver had arrived. He was here for Muggle Studies. But he actually had no intention of participating in the Arithmancy part. He didn't do Arithmancy. He did Muggle Studies though. He was good at it. He nodded politely to the two people. Neither of which he actually recognised. But he would smile at them anyway, before taking a middle seat.

Ivy Nienna 10-11-2010 02:26 PM

L...is for the way you look at me...O...is for the only one I see...V...is very very...."

Duh-dumming, humming, and almost singing the unmistakable old classic, Ivory slipped her way into the classroom, her journals for both subjects carried in the crook of her arm.

Large brown eyes blinked at her surroundings. Her near empty surroundings. Glancing down at her watch, she saw the small little magical red hand hovering right over Time for Class.Hmm...well would you look at that. She was early. It wasn't that she was always late its just that she wasn't usually one of the first. It was nice.

Shrugging her slim shoulders and smiling, she weaved through the desks and found herself a seat in the second row near the middle. "Morning Professors!"
Giving them a little wave, she arranged her journals before her and crossed her ankles under her seat.

Leaning back, she took a deep breath and almost gave an appreciative little hum. The smells coming from the kitchen were just tantalizing. Was it early enough that she could make a quick run for a buttered roll? Hmm. Pondering this, she sat up in her seat on the fence of indecision.

Lauralicious 10-11-2010 02:28 PM

Fee walked into the classroom.Weird one, Fee was kinda excited about this lesson.
What was going to happen?!

Teaking a seat she smiled at the professors.
"Good morning,professors."

She fluffed up her curls and checked her refelction. She really could need some ligloss. Argh.
Her blue eyes scanned he room, but none of her friends seemed to be here...

neaped 10-11-2010 02:35 PM

Huh? What was this? A combination of his *cough cough* favorite classes?
He greeted the teachers and Fee and took a seat.
Mmm, this was going to be fun...

WeasleyObsession7 10-11-2010 02:51 PM

Sophia walked into the class room. "Hello Professors!" she exclaimed, happily. She walked over to her seat with a strawberry flavoured quill in her hand.

hermionesclone 10-11-2010 02:52 PM

Anyone =]

Kita walked into the class in a slightly frustrated mood, even though she didn't show it. Why the classes had to move, she didn't know. All she knew was that she could have just come out of her common room instead of taking a tour of the second floor of the castle. Sighing, she plastered a smile on her face and said, "Hello Professor Hadley. Hello Professor Zookara." She only knew them from her lessons, and not very well, but she still felt the need to greet them.

She didn't know how she felt about this lesson. Arithmancy was a lesson she loved and Muggle Studies was something that came naturally to her because of her heritage. Still, both subjects proved to be just as great as each other; she knew she wouldn't forget the baseball lesson.

Kita moved towards the middle of the classroom and sat down on a seat. "Quit it!" she hissed, glaring at her stomach which seemed to demand more food despite the fact that she had just eaten. Even if it was just some chocolate her mother had sent her. She looked around the room and noticed her best friend. She waved at her but decided to stay put.

AlwaysSnapesGirl 10-11-2010 03:08 PM

Whyyy did these two professors think it was a good idea to have class down by the kitchens - or, in other words, by that wonderful place where food was made and prepared? Did they really expect Vashti to be able to focus on whatever they were teaching when she could smell all the yummy, delicious food coming from just outside the classroom? Urgh, she was so hungry now...

"Hello, Professors," she greeted them, managing a smile, before finding a seat and trying so very hard not to think of what all the food that was being made must be. She was, of course, failing at this.

Foooood...

Marie finally found classroom thirteen where Arithmancy and Muggle Studies was being held. She didn't even know this room existed and she had spent a lot of time on this level this term. What with her avoiding the Great Hall and choosing to eat in the kitchen instead how had she missed this room?

Walking into the classroom she seen both professors talking quietly. "Hello Professors," she said as she went to look for a seat. Looking around she didn't see Evelyn or Destiny but she did see Dylan. A smile crossed her face as she walked over to him. "Hey, hope you don't mind me sitting here." she said as she sat next to him.

PhoenixRising 10-11-2010 04:39 PM

Josephina was quietly just talking to Jeremy her colleague at the front as it started getting slightly noisy. But for it being a joint class between two subjects that people don't normally take BOTH, Fina was disappointed at the turnout so far.

There were a number of students that she didn't recognize, but also those whom she did.

"Good morning,"
She said politely to those who greeted her and Jeremy. "Just take a seat and we'll begin soon."

Disneymaniac 10-11-2010 04:48 PM

Dylan nodded to Marie as she sat down. And then saw the woman speak. Who was she? Any chance of an introduction or was he expecting too much?

Louisa walked into the classroom with the surprised look still glued to her face. Why would they take a combined lesson in a room near the kitchen? They will not study about enslaving house elves and such, right? Because it'd be really.. well interesting actually.

She passed the two professors with a nod and a smile who might've gone unnoticed considering the fact that they were busy. Louisa came by her two friends, "Hi girls." She greeted them as she sat to a nearby seat.

CharGryffindor 10-11-2010 07:58 PM

Rubiey wandered into the Classroom, slightly confused as to why they were doing a joint lesson. Oh merlin, pleeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeease don't let them be teaching muggle maths! She sucked at that.

"Hello, Professors!" She said brightly, taking a seat.

SilverTiger 10-11-2010 08:04 PM

'cause I love Jess and Lisa :P (Posts may be scarce though cause of work)

Grayson bounced into a heretofore unkown classroom by the kitchens, Draco ensconced in her school bag as quite often happened. She had plans to try and sneak into the kitchens after class, and figured she may as well bring her ferret along too. He was probably hungry. Right now he was asleep, though, or pretending to be. But first she had Arithmancy and Muggle Studies. An odd combination in her brain, but the professors were cool, so she didn't worry about it. "Hi Professor Hadley, Professor Zookara," she said with a smile, heading for an empty seat. She wasn't about to not greet the professors, even if class was about to start. Getting all the way down here from the towers took time. Especially when a girl didn't feel like sliding.

Lottiepot 10-11-2010 08:44 PM

Did she want to be here?

Like really? As long as it didn't turn out like LAST lesson right. She'd be fine, hopefully. Though she couldn't exactly trust whether Jeremy had told her father about it or not. So the Blonde entered silently, such a shocker for a swot like her. The sixteen year old took the nearest seat she could find. Please someone enter and give her entertainment. Not that she didn't love Arithmancy or even Muggle Studies, she adored them both, it was just.... Yeah she hadn't really thought about what could happen.

Bridget Hazel walked in to...

THE KITCHEN??

Who would have a lesson in

THE KITCHEN??

Hazel hoped that they won't get to make food...she's horrible at it, and she knows it. Not thinking of the negatives, she walked over to the girl she have never met before. She's sitting alone. I hope she won't mind, thought Hazel. "Is that seat taken?" Hazel pointed at the seat beside her.

Roselyn 10-11-2010 09:02 PM

Evelyn was rather excited.

She didn't have to walk far! MWAHAHAHA!

Making her way into the classroom, school bag slung over her shoulder and a rather pleased smile on her face, the Slytherin paused and looked around. Woot, Marie was there, sitting near some boy that she didn’t know. Meh, he was a Slytherin so what did she care? As long as Marie was talking to someone!

"Good day…professors." Professors. Twice the professor! Such a dangerous arrangement. For students that is. Twice the rules, twice the eyes, twice the hearing range…

Meh.

Kaos.Doodles 10-11-2010 09:16 PM

Legend yawned. He really didn't understand how these two lessons could join together but whatever floated the Professor's boats. Strutting into the random classroom (cause he was cool like that) he took a seat somewhere at the front. "'Sup Professors." He said with a nod.

noodles 10-11-2010 09:17 PM

Nommy. Classes near the kitchens could only mean one thing.

FOOOOOOOOD!

And boy did it smell delicious as Oliver entered the classroom with a bright smile on his face.

“Professorrrs.” He greeted the pair, doing a little half curtsy thing. Ch'yeah.. he'd learned his lesson about not greeting the staff from Lafay. Hehe.

He bounced his way to the desk behind Trixie and sat.

They were gonna get to eat during class, right?

Steelsheen 10-11-2010 09:37 PM

Classes by the kitchens? Oh this boy didnt need to be asked twice about coming to this class. Or rather classes.

Salander walked briskly into the room, his tummy already grumbling. He has come to the conclusion that this had to be the most awesome classroom in the entire castle! Sure he did think that nothing beat the Potions classroom which was next door to the Slytherin Common Rooms, but this is located right by the treasure trove baby! Nothing beats a classroom thats just a wall away from the kitchens!

''Greetin's Professor Z! Professor H-- Hadley." the lad greeted them both, correcting himself quickly to address the lady Professor by her full last name. He then positioned himself closest to the door, juuuust in case they need someone to request the Houseelves for some snacks y'know? Salander would be soooo helpful to get that done!

HOPEendures 10-11-2010 09:44 PM

Near the kitchens, maybe even a little to close to the kitchens."I really hope there won't be another food fight," Daisy muttered to herself as she walked in. She smiled at both of the Professors and said, "Hello. How are you both doing today?" She plopped on the nearest seat and sighed.

Gryffindorgurl 10-11-2010 11:04 PM

Amber entered the boringly named Classroom Thirteen, located next to the Kitchens. Hmm, knowing her she'd probably sneak into there after class and steal some snacks but whatever. Amber didn't know how to feel about this mixed class. She hated numbers, which was why she hadn't taken Arithmancy this year. And she'd only taken Muggles Studies to tick off her parents... and she was failing that one too. She sighed and took a seat near where most of the other kids were seat. She spotted Sal and waved before putting her bag next to her on the ground. Sigh, maybe this wouldn't be very boring after all.

Yourenodaisy 10-11-2010 11:18 PM

This was probably the only time Emmaleigh didn't have to rush to make it to class, because today, all she had to do was leave her common room, pass the kitchen and turn the corner. It made her a little jealous of the others who actually had classes on their own floor, But then she smiled. The Hufflepuffs were the only ones with the Kitchens right outside their door. She did enter a little apprehensively thought. She loved Muggle studies, it was kinda easy since she was raised mostly muggle, but she got to learn more about muggles in America. Arithmancy was another matter all together. It just confused her, A LOT. But she was here, she would try to learn it. She found herself a seat and before saying, "Good Day, Professors."

Mell 10-11-2010 11:38 PM

How cool was this?

She didn't have to walk far from her common room to this lesson. That was really cool. Especially since she had decided to have a nap and had only just woken up.

So Mia entered the class with slightly wrinkled robes and definite bed head. "Hello Professor's Hadley and Zookara." She greeted them with a small yawn.

It usually took her a good hour before she perked up after having been asleep so that was why she hadn't entered the class with her usual skipping and happy smile.

She needed some caffeine.

PattyH. 10-11-2010 11:50 PM

Patroclus was exhausted!

Walking from the Tallest Tower would not have usual tired his so, but today Patroclus was rather tired already.

"Morning Professor......Professor!" Patroclus smiled at the instructors, ladies first of course, then Zooky-Dooks! Finding a seat the boy, got his things out, then let his eyes close.....he wasn't sleeping....just resting!

luciussoulmate 10-12-2010 04:08 AM

Vienna was extremely curious about this lesson she really enjoyed muggle studies but Arithmancy was not her strong point. Beaming at the professors she said "Good day Professors" and went and sat down

Canoir Greengrass 10-12-2010 04:56 AM

Freya didn't have to walk far to this classroom. She opened the door to classroom Thirteen. She always love muggle studies but Arithmancy was not her best subject. "Good Morning Professors." she said smiling to both Professor and took a seat.

sweetpinkpixie 10-12-2010 06:38 AM

Kurumi entered the classroom and bowed to both professors. "Good morning, professors," she said cheerfully. Being on the kitchen level was like being in her second home. Outside of the library and the common room, this was the floor where she spent the most time as she was always baking cookies or some other sweets. After the baseball game in Muggle Studies and the crazy maze from Arithmancy, Kurumi was really excited to see what they were going to be learning. She found a seat near the front and got her quills and parchment ready for any note taking and potential stick figure drawings she may find necessary.

draco_and_hermione 10-12-2010 07:15 AM

A joint lesson? that was interesting. But Emily was good at muggle studies, if not arithmancy, soi it should be....okay. She walked into the class room and nodded a greeting to the professors before taking a seat near the middle.

Destiny 10-12-2010 09:28 AM

Stepping into the classroom, Destiny's stomach gave an involuntary grumble. The Professor's..they were torturing her with having class set up right by the kitchens! The one thing that she envied about the Hufflepuff's was how close their Common Rooms was to the kitchens. She would NEVER EVER tell anyone that, though. She could just as easily walk up the steps and go to the kitchen. She didn't need to live right down from it.

But she wanted to.

She should talk to Lafay about having the Slytherin Common Room moved. She did have to talk to her Head of House anyway. "Hello, Professor.........s." she greeted, walking by and taking a seat next to Evelyn.

Two was usually better than one, except when it came to joint classes. Two Professors..blah.

TeafortheSoul 10-12-2010 09:40 AM

Arithmu-studies?!

Aside from the fact that it was the LAMEST name ever, James still managed to show up and not late either.

Arithmu-studies. Pshshhhhh.

He strolled into the classroom, hands thrust in pockets and sat down in the first available seat that he could find, not bothered to be fussy or try to sit with anyone in particular, or get involved with any weird sort of seating arrangement politics. Nahhh. Just sit down. Shut up. And hopefully?

Arithmu-studies would be over with soon enough.

Cool. A joint lesson.
Dianna never attended muggle studies for some reason she didn't know why but now was the chance to see how it all goes.
"Helloo Professors." she happily chirped as she entered the classroom.
What will they be learning today?

Once Josephina noticed that a good number of students had made their way into their seats, she gave a signal to Jeremy that it was time to begin the lesson. After all, both their classes were elective classes, so not ALL Hogwarts students would be here, even if they wanted them to be.

Notice a few stomach groans, Fina momentarily wondered if she should give them the snack now. No, they have to earn it she decided.

"I do hope you found this classroom with ease," after all, it wasn't every day they had a class on the level by the kitchens. "For those who don't know, I'm Professor Hadley, teacher of Arithmancy, and this is Professor Zookara, the Muggle Studies professor." She indicated with a polite hand movement toward her colleague.

"Some of you might be thinking, 'If we're doing muggle maths, then count me out' or 'How do these subjects go together?' And I want to assure you that the first is not true and the second, well just about any subject matter learned at Hogwarts could find a way to go together. Professor Zookara will now lead us into the first part of the lesson ..." With a small smile toward him, she took the seat at the large teacher's desk at the front and waited for him to continue.

..Professor Hadley stood up and introduced herself.

Not doing Muggle Maths? WOOOHOOOO! Rubiey noticeably relaxed, and breathed a sigh of relief. Thank Merlin.

Okay, lets start this lesson then! Rubiey was open to anything. Especially seen as the classroom was so close to the kitchens...

Alice noticed Rubiey in the class, so she swiftly moved over to sit next to her. She hoped Rubiey didn't mind, or either of the professors for that matter since she was sure Rubiey didn't care.

Alice was curious to see what this class would be like, but she had enjoyed Professor Zookara's first lesson, and was interested to see what Professor Hadley was like since she hadn't had the chance to meet her yet.

Once Professor Hadley motioned that Professor Zookara would be leading the class first, Alice shifted her attention to him, waiting for him to speak.

Legend raised his hand up high as soon as Hadley took a seat at the desk. He just had to ask a question of course. "Professor, what's the point of it being a joint lesson if you're just going to sit down and not teach together?" Honestly they could have each done their own mini lesson, and then they'd figure out how they were related.

Jim smirked. That. Was. Brilliant.

Stupid, but funny.

Besides, wasn't it too early to tell how they were going to run a lesson? Not that, you know, James had any sort of loyalty to either professor but...

"Less classes for us to go to." He pointed out. That was a GOOD thing, Gryffindor.

And she'd only taken Muggles Studies to tick off her parents... and she was failing that one too. She sighed and took a seat near where most of the other kids were seat. She spotted Sal and waved before putting her bag next to her on the ground. Sigh, maybe this wouldn't be very boring after all.

Peeking out the door and concentrating on the aroma from the kitchens was pretty much keeping the Slytherin lad too preoccupied to care much about why they were there or why the joint classes between two seemingly unrelated subjects. He smiled at Amber and returned her wave just as his eyes shifted to a half-awake Mia entering the room. Bed-hair... Mia... Rawrrr

Kurumi swallowed her laugh and ended up coughing like she was choking on some food. While she hated people saying rude things to professors, not even she could deny that the boy's comment was funny and did make a good point. "Well, they do say that math and numbers are a universal language..." she offered in defense.

tonks2 10-13-2010 07:58 AM

Hmmm... This was going to be veeery interesting! Emmy glanced around, and finally found someone she knew - Patroclus! She inched over and sat at the desk next to him, murmured a soft "Hi Patroclus!", then looked expectantly at the two professors.

BearyMay 10-13-2010 10:21 AM

They were going to do math in the muggle way? She wasn't good in arithmancy much but at the same time haven't gone to any muggle studies class. This was going to be interesting combining the two.
Dianna diverted her attention back to the professors.

Lislchen 10-13-2010 12:53 PM

Ooooooh, students! Nice, very nice. Quickly finishing up his apple he made the rest disappear before giving Pepperfina Professor Hadley a grin in reply to her signal. Go ahead. And she did. He chuckled lightly at her first words, concerning their choice of location for this lesson. Interesting choice. But also genius...so close to the food. Heh.

Then she went on introducing first themselves and then sort of the lesson during which Jeremy just stood next to his colleague, nodding occasionally. Well, what else was there to say really? She had said it all. "Thank you, Professor Hadley." She had just 'professor'ed him too so. He took a step forward, giving the class a small smile before opening his mouth to start off with the lesson...

...and closing it again. Oh, question. Err. Regarding the boy (Legend) for a moment, Jeremy finally replied, "Just because we are not teaching at the same time, which by the way would probably quite confusing, doesn't mean we are not teaching together. There is a common object which I'll introduce in just a minute, which Professor Hadley will be using as well in her part of the lesson." Did that make sense? Yes, it had to suffice. Because now was time for the start of the lesson.

Reaching past Josephina, Jeremy retrieved a bright red object - which up until now had been hidden from view by the teacher's desk - and presented it to the class by holding it up slightly. "Anybody know what this is?" Easy question for the start.

OOC: The lesson has now officially started. Any late arrivals risk losing house points, just pretend you've been here all along.

Dianna raised her hand.
"Sir, I believe that is a telephone." Dianna said as she lowered her hand.
They were going to learn about..Telephones..?

Oliver smirked and looked around and then raised his hand. Muggle Studies was easy, man. “That's a muggle telephone.” He replied. “Like a reh-heally old fashioned looking one.” He eyed it. It looked like the one used in the ancient TV show of batman. Awesome.

Yourenodaisy 10-13-2010 01:29 PM

Er, what? that was the special item? well, I guess the ones that were not raised muggle would not have seen one, she thought as She raised her hand. "Sir, Thats a telephone. Muggles use them to communicate." But whats that got to do with Arithmancy? she thought.

Canoir Greengrass 10-13-2010 02:43 PM

"Absolutely correct." He grinned at the four people who had answered his question, mentally noting their names for participation. "Now, you probably know the Wizarding World does not have telephones, however, we have something else." And here came the part of the lesson he was probably going to dislike most. Jeremy reached down once again to release one of the weird grey school owls from its cage so it could sit on top of the desk...or fly around the classroom. Nice. That had NOT quite gone as planned.

"Okay, err-" He drew his attention from the gross owl and back to the class. "-you probably have identified this as an owl." If not, there was something seriously wrong with them...and Maya was failing to teach them anything. "What do those two have in common?" At this he gestured back and forth between the telephone in his right hand and the owl. Would it be inappropriate to mobilize the owl? Probably not. It WOULD come back to the cage when it was done with...whatever it was doing.

Or he could throw the phone at the owl?

BanaBatGirl 10-13-2010 03:50 PM

"They're both er.... used for communication?" Fletcher answered, his attention not at all on the professors but rather on the owl. Oooh live animals and muggle fellytones.

This class was going to be fun.

Fletcher allowed first his eyes, and then his head and entire neck, to follow the path of the owl as it circled the room. Around and around and around she goes, where she stops... nobody knows! Though it would be like superawesome if the owl landed on one of the professor's heads....

He started rummaging around in his bag with one hand while he continued watching the owl's trajectory. If he could just find one of those little owl treats he'd been feeding Muffin the other day.....

Destiny 10-13-2010 03:55 PM

Destiny watched with narrowed eyes as the Muggle Studies Professor let the owl fly around the classroom. He probably did that on purpose, to have the thing peck her eyes out. Well, if it did peck her eyes she would not be pleased.

Not. Pleased. At. All.

Professor Zooballoon saw what she could do with a Beater's Bat, imagine what she could do with a teph-a-lone..or whatever the thing was called. She didn't speak muggle. Raising her hand after the question, she rolled her eyes. The answer was so obvious, it would probably bite if it had teeth. "They can both fly."

The teph-a-lone could fly..

..if she threw it.

Rubiey looked up when Professor Zookara held up the telephone first, then released the owl. Uh, why was it flying around? She did NOT feel like washing bird poo out of her hair. She narrowed her eyes at it.

"They are both used for communication, sir." But how was that anything to do with Arithmancy? Would they learn... morse code or something? That had numbers, right?

Roselyn 10-13-2010 05:40 PM

OMG look at the owl! She sooooo wanted her owl back. Just not No-Name. Felix can have that bird. Crazy thing.

Oops! Distracted!

Well the only thing she could think of they had in common would have been that they were used for communication. Except, well no, she knew one more thing. "They both can be sometimes really really annoying."

Mmhmm. Really, really annoying.

Lauralicious 10-13-2010 05:42 PM

Fee raised her hand. Of course she knew what that was.

"They are both used to contact others",
she explained,"muggles call friends, family or whatever with their phone and we sent letters with our owls."

noodles 10-13-2010 06:25 PM

Owl. Flying around the classroom.

Poor thing.

Meh... as long as it didn't decide to dive bomb them with droppings.

Oliver crinkled his nose and watched the bird before turning his attention back to the front of the class. He raised his hand.

“They're both used for communication, sir.” He replied. “But the muggle way is, like, waaay faster. Like instantaneous. Owling someone is more akin to using the muggle postage system... or using a carrier pigeon.” heh.

Kaos.Doodles 10-13-2010 08:04 PM

Before the either Professor's had said anything two student's had spoken up. A Gryffindor and a Ravenclaw. He nodded at the boy's answer. That was true...less classes!

"Alright, whatever you say sir." Yes sir, fine sir, the world made sense when you combined two lessons into one, to teach about a bright red phone. Yeah...right. Legend raised his hand, although alot of people already answered before him. He would need to put another spin on his answer then. "Well, they are both used when you are not able to physically talk or communicate to someone because the distance. Like you wouldn't call or owl someone standing three feet away from you." Yup, he knew his stuff.

Yourenodaisy 10-13-2010 08:39 PM

Emmaleigh watched the owl fly around the classroom, and it reminded her that she needed to go visit Halt. She was sure he would love to take a letter to her parents. She raised her hand. "They are both used for communication. The telephone uses voice, the Owl, takes letters."

WeasleyObsession7 10-13-2010 09:12 PM

Sophia smiled. She knew what that was!! "That is a muggle telephone sir." she said. "And an old one at that." she said, truthfully. Now people used iPhones and stuff. Not red blobs.

Alice smiled at Rubiey once she had noticed she was sitting next to her. Classes were always more enjoyable when you knew the person you were sitting next to.

Alice felt bad she hadn't answer the first question, because she did indeed know that it was a telephone. After all she had one in her own home. She watched as Professor Zookara opened the owls age, looking at it with such dislike that Alice wondered why Professor Zookara seemed to despise owls.

"Both an owl or a telephone can be used to communicate with another person that is too far away from you to talk in person. Telephones are a good bit quicker than owls though, considering phones allow for instantaneous communication while owls can take a couple of days to get back to you, depending on how far away the person you are trying to communicate with is."

sweetpinkpixie 10-13-2010 09:44 PM

Kurumi giggled at Professor Zookara as he pulled out a rather old telephone. We have moved on a lot more to using smaller phones she laughed to herself tapping her pink cellphone that lay tucked away in her pocket.

"Professor," she smiled raising her hand and trying not to giggle too much. "Both owls and a telephone are used to deliver messages and communicate."

iBeJenn 10-13-2010 10:48 PM

Selena raised her hand. Why didn't they used smaller phones? Weren't there such things? Weren't those the tiny little devices muggles started screaming into and typing on furiously? Whatever. Old-fashioned schools came with old-fashioned telephones. Hehehe.

"The two are used for the delivery of messages," Selena said. 'And the two don't look very pretty at all...' she added in her mind.

His eyes narrowing as he considered the question, What do they have in common? he pondered, shifting his head between the red telephone and the owl....

Ah Epiphany! "They are used for Muggles or Wizards, in our case, to communicate with each other quickly and with ease. Well, telephones are much quicker, but owls are more efficient, as you don't need to tell them where to go to find someone. You just send them on their way!" she answered happily. This was too easy. Considering she was Muggle-born, hehe.

Gryffindorgurl 10-14-2010 12:55 AM

Amber raised her hand. "Professor, they both make really annoying sounds when they're working... or living." She'd experienced the very annoying sounds of a muggle telephone before and it was not pretty. She'd ended up smashing the phone with her cousin's beaters bat. HA! That was fun!

BearyMay 10-14-2010 11:40 AM

"Well they both can send messages from a great distance.." Dianna said a she lowered her hand.
Although owls are way cooler.. Dianna thought.

Canoir Greengrass 10-14-2010 12:19 PM

An owl and a telephone? What they have in common? Freya raised her hand "Umm..They both used to communicate with other people. Louisa blinked. A telephone and an owl? Like.. they're both too weird to be here in this class, Daah! Seriously, was the teacher being funny or something? Eeer... no. He wasn't because nobody laughed or even smiled. Meh.

She raised her hand determined to answer the question with [i]creativity[/b]. "Both can be obtained easily." That was her first thought. "And everybody could use both of them, no exceptions. Both can deliver messaged verbal or written." She ended with a proud smile.

Hazel wiggled in her seat. She smiled at the Professors. Hehe...muggle math! Hazel doesn't want to brag or anything, she tried muggle math before. And she's kind of good at it. She had already memorized her times tables...,well, maybe except for 7.

Hazel hid a smirk. Hehe. She can't remember the last time she has been so excited for a class. But Muggle Studdies? It's not that bad but she doesn't exactly like it either. Oh well, I'll live, Hazel thought.

Uh...

Hazel's brain went blank.

Whoosh!

Well, whatever it is that the muggle invented, it was a bit pretty. But WHAT IS IT?? There was a bunch of number on there, and pretty wires! She would definetly want one of them, that's for sure. She wouldn't know how to use it. But it's pretty for decoration!

Hazel pinched herself. What was she thinking? Get down to Earth and start paying attention! She thought maybe it was a a type of odd drink in side that the muggles drink? No, it can't be. It has to have something Arithmancy. Hazle shrugged what could that be?

She raised her hand. "Um...professor? I was just thinking, if they can't use magic, then they have to have something to substitute for it right? The main things that I can think of that muggles don't have are Owls for one example, they aren't smart...I mean thoughtful enough to domesticate them to get them to send mails to each other. The other one's is wand, can that possibly subsitute for our wand?" Hazel thought carefully. "And maybe a subsitute for transportation maybe? I mean we have our broomsticks they probably don't. Is any of them correct" Hazel asked. The transportation one is probably the least probability. How can muggles fit in there? Well, it's just a thought.

Emmy raised her hand, saying "They're both communication devices - an owl takes your letter to the intended recipient, while a telephone converts the sound waves of your voice into electrical pulses, sends them to the telephone you called, which then converts the pulses back into sound waves. Hence phoning is quicker than sending an owl..."
That had to be the easiest question she'd ever been asked - and of course it helped enormously being muggleborn, as she'd been lectured on the workings of many electrical and electronic devices in her short life.

PattyH. 10-17-2010 01:25 AM

Smiling as Emmy took the seat next to him, Patroclus turned his attention to the telephone and the questions that the wonderous Zooky-Dooks was asking.

"Professor, then both involve the exchange of enegry! With a telephony your voice get's turned into little ball of .........electricity.......yeah that's it. And with the Owls the food that the owl's eat gets turned into energy so that it can flap it's wings!"

To Patroclus that made perfect sense......however probably not to anyone else!!

Crazzy Boy!

Honestly, Josephina didn't know why Legend Chosen was complaining - except that he was probably just one that liked to complain to hear himself complain. One moment he was whining that he wanted to be EXCUSED from her homework and the next it was that they should have separated the classes. Complainer . . .

Shaking her head, she listened to what the students had to say about thw two things in question.

“They're both used for communication, sir.” He replied. “But the muggle way is, like, waaay faster. Like instantaneous. Owling someone is more akin to using the muggle postage system... or using a carrier pigeon.” heh.

"Well, they are both used when you are not able to physically talk or communicate to someone because the distance. Like you wouldn't call or owl someone standing three feet away from you." "Both an owl or a telephone can be used to communicate with another person that is too far away from you to talk in person. Telephones are a good bit quicker than owls though, considering phones allow for instantaneous communication while owls can take a couple of days to get back to you, depending on how far away the person you are trying to communicate with is."

Not. Pleased. At. All.

Professor Zooballoon saw what she could do with a Beater's Bat, imagine what she could do with a teph-a-lone..or whatever the thing was called. She didn't speak muggle. Good versus evil? Uh ... Fina stared at the next slytherin, bewildered by his sudden -- and outlandish -- statements. She didn't get it. Giving a confused look quickly to Jeremy, she hoped maybe he understood, but then simply shrugged it off. "That all sounds nice .... nicely fictional to me. But thank you." Looking again over at her colleague, who was remaining awfully quiet, she decided to pick up the lesson a little, as the owl was flying around the room. They'd have to catch it later . . . or get Maya to come help. "So we know the owl is used in the wizarding world for communication purposes, and the telephone for muggles. Gryffindorgurl 10-19-2010 01:38 AM

Amber got a confused look on her face. Muggle Studies was definitely not one of her best subjects, nor was Arithmancy. Explain why she took this class again? "Uhh... do certain numbers call certain places? Like how we can make owls go to certain houses?" Oh man, now she was confused! Was each number a different place, or did you combine numbers? Did the number 9 call your Aunt Sally's? She hated the muggle world! They made everything so confusing! <_<

SilverTiger 10-19-2010 01:39 AM

Grayson had held back a giggle as the owl Professor Zookara had let loose flew around the room, not to mention at Salander's answer to the question. Of course they were talking about communication, even though she didn't have an owl of her own. They had a telephone at her house, though. So this discussion was exciting to her, not to mention the amusement of watching the owl. It was a good thing Draco was nowhere around, though. Didn't owls eat small rodents? That would be the one reason she didn't want one, even though they were fun to watch when they acted crazy like that.

Ohh, but then Professor Hadley had spoken, and she raised her hand. "Muggles have what is called a telephone number, series of numbers strung together which is how each telephone connects to the others. The numbers on the phone are used to dial the number of whoever they are trying to contact, and the phone, or the operator, connects the dialer to whoever they are dialing." Sometimes it paid to have a Muggle parent.

Selena looked at the numbers then grinned. Oooh. She knew. She knew!! She raised her hand before answering. "People with telephones have phone numbers and then if you have someone's phone number you can push the buttons to match it up with the phone number and then it calls them!!!" Selena said with a grin. It was fun punching in the numbers, not remembering the phone numbers. Plus it was good for creeping people out, mmhmm... maybe that was why she was banned from the phone at home... she had never thought of that till now. Hehehe.

Kaos.Doodles 10-19-2010 01:57 AM

Did anyone know how the number's worked? Seriously?

REALLY now?! Legend snorted. Oh Hadley what a funny, funny person you were. "Well professor, you see those little hole things? You stick your finger in them and turn them to the right."He said as though he were explaining it to a little child. Maybe it was to the left though? Oh well. Alright time to be serious, there might have been purebloods in here. "Like the other's said you need telephone numbers and such but that doesn't really matter. What DOES matter is connected that plug thing to an outlet and having a connection with the...phone company and stuff." Telephones were boring, who cared how they worked! This wasn't Muggle Studies class! Oh...wait....
GAHHH the two professors were confusing him.

Vashti wished she knew what the reason for having class on the kitchen level was because it was really distracting her from what was going on in class. So many yummy smells coming from what was surely yummy food... Gah! She was so lucky she was a Muggle-born and therefore already knew all these Muggle-related things. She'd have to borrow some students' notes otherwise.

Maybe if she forced herself to focus and answer some of these questions, the smells wouldn't distract her so much. She needed to earn some more house points anyway. So she raised her hand. "Well, depending on the phone, you either push the buttons or put your finger in the holes and turn the wheel to dial the numbers to call another person, using whatever phone number they were given," she explained. "A phone number is basically just a bunch of random numbers that were assigned to a person's cell phone - if they have one - or to all the home phones in their house." Quite simple really. More efficient than using owls and writing letters, in her opinion.

One thing Destiny hated about joint classes..they confused the Bertie Bott's out of her. One minute Professor Zooballoon was speaking and the next Professor Hadley was! She was going to get whiplash with the amounts of looking back and forth she was doing.

Back and forth.

Back and forth.

OWL!

Where was that thing at anyway? Probably hiding, and Destiny wouldn't blame it. Having to stay with the Muggle Studies Professor all day? She would hide too.

Eyes on the Arithmancy Professor. She was tempted to ask the woman if she wanted to see a teph-a-lone fly, but decided not to. If she made it fly, it would probably hit the owl or something..or herself. She had bad aim and all. Besides, there was a question asked. A question she knew the answer to! Raising her hand, she waved it around in a Destiny fashion. "You push the numbers and then the teph-a-lone drops you off on that numbered floor."

Yeah, she was getting her muggle objects mixed up.

"Professor, each home has a telephone, for the most part, and each phone has its own unique number. When you know the number of the person you want to call, on this particular phone, you put your finger in the circle above the first number you are calling and move it all the way to the right until you hit that silver piece of metal. You then remove your finger and wait until the dial rotates back into starting position. Repeat this strategy using your next number until all the numbers are dialed. Oh! Before you do this, you need to pick up the receiver...um...the narrow piece on top with the holes on either side to make sure you have a dial tone..." she wasn't sure how to describe what a dial tone was, but she had already babbled enough as it was. "Is that the connection, professor...s? Each home and person in the muggle world is connected to a specific set of numbers?"

tonks2 10-19-2010 08:52 AM

Emmy put her hand up - again, saying, "Each number is unique to each phone, whether it be mobile or landline.
For instance, if you were to dial '01234 123456', you would always get the same phone.
However, in special circumstances, you can be allocated a new number for your old phone - like, you get a new SIM card for your mobile, or phone the authorities to change your home phone number without having to change the handset - the bit you hold and speak into."

Salander smiled at Professor Hadley then leaned back, thinking he has very much provided the singularly perfect answer to Professor Zookara's question. But before he had time to gloat the lady Professor followed up with the next question. "Just press the buttons Professor. When you press the right buttons, you get what you want."

Blink.

Wait did he just imply.....

"....Like room service." he added quickly.

Louisa chuckled at some answers from students who obviously were pure blood and in no way lived with muggles because she was sure as hell that no telephone flew like an owl!

"You press them, Professor, and some have like a tiny wheel i.e. a dial so you can move it around to each number you wanna press." Old style but they exist.

Pause.

On thinking far ahead the girl assumed most of the students don't know that "Because to communicate you use a certain chain of numbers. Like you reach the telephone of your friend's by this chain of numbers." Sounded complicated now that she tried to explain it but it was how it worked.

Alice raised her hand. "Each muggle who owns a phone has their own ten digit telephone number. In order to contact someone you would merely punch their number into the phone using the buttons." At least one of these students had to have some connection to muggles, right?

"Well, every house has its own combination of number,Professor",Fee started to explain,"you have to push the numbers in the right order and you will get connected with the person you want."

At least that was what Fee thought. As a pureblood she had nothing to do with muggle devices....

Keefer waved both hands madly in the air. He knew this one!

"I know about fellytones---I mean, telephones! Almost all Muggle houses have them, whether they are the kind you showed us or the portable kind. Each house's phone has its own unique 10-digit number. If I wanted to call, say, Jim, then I would pick up the telephone that I have in my house, dial the 10-digit number for Jim's telephone, and then wait. After a few seconds, the phone in Jim's house would start making a ringing noise. Like bells, almost. That sounds alerts him that someone is trying to contact him. If he picks up the phone and talks into the correct end, I would be able to hear him and we could talk. Kinda like sticking only your head in the fireplace with Floo powder, only you can't see the other person's head!"

Yes, telephones were awesome. And so magical! Well, in the mysterious way, at least.

But thank you." For what, she had no idea.

It just kept on going round in circles...and yet another round, and another, and another. Jeremy had lost any attention for the class for a moment to focus fully on the gross owl in the classroom. Why had he brought it again? It would have been enough if he had brought a picture or something, but no, he had decided to be extra-creative about this. That's what he got for that. Nice, very nice. Maybe he should instruct the students to catch it?

Totally engrossed in the owl he missed most of the answers the students gave to HIS question. It wasn't until Fina spoke up that he started to half pay attention to the class again. Oh, and Destiny seemed to have had a special answer yet again. Well, he wasn't going to let her demonstrate again. Not even letting the telephone fly. Unless she threw it at the owl.

He finally dragged his eyes away from the owl as he felt Fina's eyes on him. She looked confused. Err. Quickly assessing the situation Jeremy assumed she was talking to Salander who had...right, said something about Batman and Owlman. Clever boy. "It DOES look like the phone from Batman right?" He chuckled lightly and gave the boy a grin before opening his mouth to continue with the lesson...and closed it again. Fina seemed to be in a hurry to go on. Thank MERLIN this wasn't a Care of Magical Creatures lesson. He'd never be able to make a Joint Lesson with Maya...unless they talked about, say, earthworms or something equally tiny.

"Uhh... do certain numbers call certain places? Like how we can make owls go to certain houses?" Oh man, now she was confused! Was each number a different place, or did you combine numbers? Did the number 9 call your Aunt Sally's? She hated the muggle world! They made everything so confusing! <_<

Somehow it seemed like Amber rather guessed than knew the answer. It was nonetheless correct, though. Partly anyhow. "Yes, correct. It's rather a certain combination of numbers, which make you be able to call certain places." He was not going to go into speed-dialing now. They were probably going to be throwing telephones stuff at him if he did, because they would be so confused.

Phew. At least Destiny hadn't demanded to demonstrate just how well a telephone could fly. Once again, he probably wouldn't have been able to resist allowing her to. Though he wasn't sure what Fina would have thought of that. Besides, she could have hit somebody with the telephone, which would have been bad. Really bad. Unless it would have been the owl.

Teph-a-lone? "It's telephone." Jeremy automatically corrected her before turning around to write the word onto the board in capital letters. TELEPHONE. There, so, now back to her answer. "No, it doesn't exactly drop you off anywhere, it's not a portkey." It was only then that he noticed the similarity to something else. Something else which wasn't completely Muggle-only. "It's not an elevator either." Or not. She couldn't have mistaken the telephone for an elevator right?

Blink.

Wait did he just imply.....

"....Like room service." he added quickly.

When you press the right buttons, you get what you want. That...sounded funny. Giggle!Snort. Even though it probably wasn't meant to. But it did. Biting his lip to keep himself from bursting out laughing, he couldn't help but glance at Fina briefly to see if she thought it was funny too. "Right." Cue big grin into Salander's direction as he tried to explain what he had been trying to say. Just like room service.

Or something.

Selena said with a grin. It was fun punching in the numbers, not remembering the phone numbers. Plus it was good for creeping people out, mmhmm... maybe that was why she was banned from the phone at home... she had never thought of that till now. Hehehe.

"Is that the connection, professor...s? Each home and person in the muggle world is connected to a specific set of numbers?"

Nodding at the various correct answers, Jeremy slowly made his way over to the door and...opened it for the owl to fly out. It would find its way to the owlery right? And if not, oh well, somebody was going to show it the way. Or not. Watching the owl zoom out the open door the 32 year old quickly slammed it shut behind it. Now, at least that was taken care of.

"Absolutely correct." He grinned at the students, obviously relieved about the absence of the owl. Mouthing a 'thanks' into Fina's direction he nodded yet again. "As most of you have mentioned, pushing the buttons in a certain order enables the caller to call somebody. However, in this case-" He held up the red telephone again. "-you would have to turn the little thing here instead of pushing buttons, like Legend has mentioned." Giving the boy a small smile he demonstrated it on the telephone before bending down to pick up something else. Something a lot smaller. "Now, as some of you said, this is a rather old telephone, nowadays people rather use models like this one." Yes, this was something they were probably more familiar with.

Putting both objects back onto the table Jeremy turned to face the class again. "Anybody know in who is said to have invented the telephone? There are several correct answers to this one, actually, please only name one though." Yes, it was still not completely certain who had in fact invented it.

Wonderstruck 10-19-2010 02:20 PM

Alice raised her hand. "Alexander Graham Bell was one muggle who was involved in making the telephone."

Nordic Witch 10-19-2010 02:34 PM

Roxxy took notes as Professors Zookara and Hadley spoke about the telephone and owls. They were both ways of communicating with other people. The telephone she new was a lot quicker at least the modern ones. When Professor Zookara asked who had invented the telephone Roxxy's hand shot up like a lightening bolt. "The telephone was invented by a muggle named Antonio Meucci but Alexander Bell was the one who patented the telephone."

Lottiepot 10-19-2010 02:44 PM

This was a rather unusual invention. Trixie eyed the...telephone, momentarily before racking her brains over what she had read in her textbook, because SHE certainly didn't own one of them. Maybe she should get someone to buy her one. They looked kinda, cool.

Now someone involved in inventing this weird thing. "Was there someone called...." Erm what was his name? See this is what you got for being a Pureblood living in remote Wales. "...Thomas Edison? He was supposed to be involved somehow right?" she asked. At least the Swotty Slytherin had read somewhere or other. Muggles were something she HAD to read up on herself, after knwing nothing about them whatsoever.

Canoir Greengrass 10-19-2010 03:37 PM

Freya raised her hand "Umm..A muggle named Elisha Gray?" she said uncertain.

sweetpinkpixie 10-19-2010 09:17 PM

"I've heard that there was a young black man named Lewis Lattimer who contributed to Alexander Bell's patent drawings," Kurumi offered as most people had already mentioned the big names. She oogled the iPhone sitting on the table for a moment and wished the she had one. Her pink phone that rested in her robe's pocket was a bit old now.

HOPEendures 10-19-2010 09:23 PM

She looked at the expensive phone that the professor had held up and sighed. If she had a phone like that life would be amazing.Daisy raised her hand, "Alexander Bell invented the telephone." At least that's what she had been taught.

Magical Soul 10-19-2010 09:53 PM

"Alexander Bell invented the telephone." She answered after raising her hand. And again in her mind, the girl was wondering what's telephones got to do with both subjects; Muggle Studies and Arithmancy.

Oh!
Blink blink.

It's a muggle device that contained numbers! How could she not notice the obvious link before!? She should get more sleep and forget about spending too much time in the library.

Lauralicious 10-19-2010 09:57 PM

"Wasnt that Charles Bourseul a muggle from France",Fee said raising her hand. The professor said there were several answers, so this could actually be right.
