Default Charms Lesson 1

Charms Lesson 1

There's nothing unusual about the way the Charms classroom has been set up. All the desks are neatly arranged in rows and, save for a few boxes filled with random supplies, nothing unusual decorates the room. Professor Carlton doesn't appear to be in the classroom, but a slightly ajar door in the back of the room gives the impression that she's likely in the supply closet, looking around for some random something-or-another to use in class.

A sign on the board reads:

Quote:
Welcome to Charms class! Please come in and take a seat. As my announcement indicated, you are more than welcome to have come to class wearing cowboy or cowgirl attire. If you don't own these items, they'll be provided for you. The lesson will begin momentarily.

OOC: The lesson will begin in about two hours (5:45 PM EST). You may roleplay your character coming in and joining class, but please try and limit the conversation.

- First question [Link]

- Second question [Link]

- Practice the spell [Link]

- Horseback riding! [First Link], then head [out to the racetrack]!

Simon was about to answer his friend when the professor answered the room, and not from the storage closet like most had obviously assumed hence the greetings despite her absence. And yes she was back with the pink highlights which were an expected look even thought they had been starting to fade towards the end of term.

Listening to the question and the answers before, he tried to think of something different to say. "The swish and flick movement must be precise and concentration is key lest the spell discipate and you drop whatever was hovering," he added to the rest.

Nodding her head vehemently, Ivory agreed along with the class. Yup, swish and flick that was the way of it.

Straightening her cowboy hat, she leaned back in her seat next to Arya and gave her a wink with a western tip of her hat.

That was the only way to greet someone in these clothes after all. Who knew what this class had in store for them. Nevertheless, she felt prepared. In her favorite scruffy jeans, worn leather boots and a tuck in plaid shirt complete with a starry blue bandanna tied around her neck, she felt ready for adventure.

"...oh, before we move on, let me say that I do love the cowboy and cowgirl outfits. I guess you're wondering why you have them on and just what we're going to be doing with them," she said with a laugh. She'd meant to comment on this a little earlier, but all the pretty pink suits of clothes had distracted her. "You'll find out soon enough, though. I promise."

Oh, wow! Lexi had totally been expecting someone to just spew information directly from the textbook right off the bat, but this Kellen Stern surprised her. "Thank you, Mr. Stern, for thinking outside the box on that one. You're right, too," she remarked. "Once you've casted the Hover Charm, you'll need to keep careful watch over it so it'll maintain it's..."

But she definitely needed to work on them, she wasn't that great of a spell caster...

Looking up at the Proffessor, she couldn't help but smile at the hair. Pink highlights on a teacher? Not something you'd EVER see at Durmstrang. But it was pretty cool 'And Proffessor? I like your hair' she said, giving her a smile. She wasn't a huge fan of pink, but it did look nice. Not that she'd ever get highlights - they'd look silly. Stupid red hair. Pfft.
"...levitation," she said, turning toward the Johannsen girl as she finished her sentence. "Levitation...swish, flick...Wingardium Leviosa. All are right." Suddenly surprised at the comment on her hair, Lexi paused and gave the girl a small smile. "Oh, well, thank you. I do---..." She trailed off, though. She had been about to go off on some spill about fashion but stopped herself before she could get completely distracted. Charms, Alexia. Charms.

Apparently Lo knew what was "in" these days. Hehe.
"It levitates objects...specifically," she said, turning toward Ty. "...but, yes. We'll get into moving them about once they're up there sometime later on in the lesson." Good thing most of the students already seemed to know the incantation. That was one less thing she'd have to heavily focus on, which meant they could get to the practical part of the lesson a little sooner.

He preferred Levitation Charm anyway.
"Right," she said, her attention now on Evan. "To hover them, as the name suggests." She paused for just a moment to move back toward her desk. She'd paced enough and was now ready to just sit and face the students as they discussed and learned. She took a seat on the edge of the desk and glanced back out at the class.

Okay, so she hadn't been in there. Oh well. She smiled at the professor, momentarily thinking she should have left the green in her hair after the DADA class, with the professor's pink streaks in her hair. Solidarity or something, although she figured the pink streaks weren't from magical paintball wars.

As the first question was posed to the class, she raised her hand along with the others. "Hover charms are used to make things hover in midair. Which might be the same as Wingardium Leviosa, but that more accurately makes things levitate," she said, before continuing. It was a subtle difference, in her opinion. House elves...that mention reminded Lexi of cookies. Mmm...

And from personal experience, I can say that it is best to be looking at the object you wish to levitate. Otherwise, you may lose concentration or get distracted so that you actually make something else go flying up in the air."

His mother had been most unhappy to find her best china suddenly in peril. The distant crashes of falling china echoed through the years as Keefer reminisced.
"Very good point about always watching the object to make sure you don't lose your connection," she said. Hmm...especially when levitation rather large objects, like people. She didn't suppose anyone would enjoy being dropped to the ground after being levitated. She laughed lightheartedly as she pictured objects...or people...randomly flying away all thanks to someone losing their concentration.

Ellie shrugged it off. Maybe she'd suggest an entrance for the next lesson. Just the idea, though. Because she'd want to be surprised.

Okay, lesson now. Hover charm? Wingardium leviosa, perhaps? She put her hand up. It was worth a try. "It's used to levitate things." See, that's what she knew it as. But she supposed hovering and levitating were almost the same thing. Almost. "You give your wand a swish and a flick and you say 'Wingardium leviosa'. Pronounciation's important." It was. "And you need to keep your concentration of the object and spell. Otherwise it will fall and make a mess of everything." Yup.
"Pronunciation, yes...," she said, nodding once in agreement. "This charm has been known to cause objects to, err...explode...if the pronunciation isn't just so." She gave some of the more shifty students a warning glance before continuing. "Wingardium Leviosa...lots of different sounds in there, so you'll need to make sure you know them all perfectly before doing all your swishing and flicking."

Cue warning glance again. Surely no one would cause a minor explosion in he room...hmm?

Lexi gestued toward the Schwarzberg girl, agreeing with what the Slytherin girl was saying about the charm. "That's right--good, good," she said. She was happy to know she could be sure that most, if not all, of the students knew how to cast the spell and what the spell could do.

Way to nearly not make a good first impression. She hurried down the hallway, high heels click-clacking all the way, and came to a stop just in front of the classroom door. She hadn't had time to change into any cowgirl attire---yet, but she could always do that later in the lesson.

She had, however, freshly highlighted her hair, which meant that her signature pink streaks were back...and that made her pretty happy indeed. She opened the door and strolled casually into class, giving her students a pleasant expression as she did so.

...and why was the door to the supply closet open, hmm? She guessed he'd left it like that when she'd been rummaging around for extra cowboy hats a few hours earlier. Yes, Carlton kept cowboy hats in her closet. Random other things, too, as she used them to practice a wide assortment of charms she'd likely one day use in class. She raised her wand and silently casted a spell that slammed the closet door shut. There now. All looked in order and ready to go.

Oh, and look at that! Conrad and Farley even showed up wearing pink! A couple of others, too! She casted all of them an extra wide smile, then...oh---Bristol had fairy wings! She thought about asking those students if she could borrow their attire later on in the class, but...ahh, she'd stick to the ordinary costumes stored away in the room.

"Well, welcome to the first Charms lesson of the year. For those of you who don't know me, I'm Professor Carlton, obviously the Charms professor. Go ahead and take a seat, so we can get started," she said. She placed her handbag in an area just behind her desk then turned back to the students, pausing for just a moment to allow them time to settle down and get ready to learn.

"Mmkay, what can you tell me about the Hover Charm, hmm?" she asked, glancing around the room. "I realize this is a basic charm, but we often times use basic charms, put new spins on them, and come up with something completely out of the ordinary." Which was she planned for them to do today. "...but what's the basic information I need to know in order to cast this charm...this is especially helpful information for our first years."

Salander was distracted with all the cowboy get up people were wearing to class. And the strange smattering of PINK! What's going on? Is this like Hogwart's way of celebrating Anglo-American friendship day? He looked at Grayson's attire as he sat next to her "Nice boots." he complimented her. He himself wasnt wearing cowboy anything. Other than a stars and stripes shirt tucked in his closet, he didnt bring anything notably American from home. Not like he needed anything to show himself off as one. All he needed was to open his big mouth.

He turned to focus his attention at the lady speaking in front of the class, then his eyes grew large. Despite the pink streaks, Salander recognized her almost immediately. Its the lady from the Gumball line. Of course he was in Charms class! The key words from that day echoed in his head Charms. Professor. Hogwarts. He wasnt sure if she heard him going ballistic on Diggy, but he wasnt risking it. He shrunk in his seat and could only mumble the answer "Wingardium Leviosa." Yeah lets keep real quiet, real polite, real still......

Salander was still looking down at his parchment and kept mumbling, hoping that his voice will be drowned out by the rest of the class. ".... helped got out of Arithmancy maze "

Creative ideas. Well she was chuck full of them she was.

But first for the obvious ones.
Raising her hand, she spoke up cherrily. "Well one could easily use the charm for handling dangerous ingredients in potions or even regular ones while cooking," Smiling she recalled the pervious term's lesson where they'd done just that.

Quickly taking out his quill, ink and a piece of parchment, Ty jotted down everything the Professor said before thinking about her next question. Hmm... Well, the obvious would be using it for height difficulties but what else was there?

After a few moments of intense thinking, Ty raised his hand. "Erm, you could use it to carry or move objects that can't be moved easily like heavy stuff, er, slippery things or things that wiggle too much..." he said, feeling quite unoriginal today.

Eh well, it was an answer right?

Playing with one of her pig tails, she hadn't worn them in a while, she pondered her answer before raising her hand. "You could use it to throw something, like a ball." Which reminded her... "Or if you can't yet preform the summoning charm, you can use this instead, but only to a certain extent." She was still working on that charm, but the hover charm was a nice substitute.

Mmhmm, she was waaaay too distracted by what everyone was wearing to even answer the first question. Besides, everyone pretty much answered it thoroughly anyways. Not much when on with the spell except, it made things hover. Hehe.

The second question though, she was prepared for. Sorta. Now, what sort of unique ways can they use this charm for? Was it bad that she immediately thought of this? "Well, you can use this charm to replace a rope. I mean, you know when people use ropes tied to trees to jump into a body of water? Well, this way, you can go higher and farther out! Not to mention do a lot more tricks in mid air if you wanted to before falling into the water." she said, trying hard not to laugh after she raised her hand.

Maybe they should do that in the Spring time. Or during the end of the year? YUSH! It shall be done!

Vashti thought for a moment before her hand shot up into the air to answer the question. "You could use it to levitate all the heavy textbooks - or books in general - that we use for classes and stuff. They can be very diffcult to carry in just one bag or carry in general, really. Levitating them is much easier than lugging them around all day." Yup, it was incredibly helpful for that. She had definitely used the charm for that purpose.

Sammy raised her hand quickly "Christmas decorating" she said happily "or re-arranging your room or something like that" she continued, but shut up once she realised she was babbling, but she was generally hyper right now. She had used the levitating spell to re-arrange her own room ... she hadn't been happy with her room ... it took about three days to get it right

Charms.

"Right," she said, her attention now on Evan. "To hover them, as the name suggests." She paused for just a moment to move back toward her desk. She'd paced enough and was now ready to just sit and face the students as they discussed and learned. She took a seat on the edge of the desk and glanced back out at the class.

"Well..., hmm...yes, you could hover an object above you," she said. "If that's what you intended for it to do, of course. You could hover it anywhere, though, so as long as you properly used your wand to guide it."

"Mmhmm, mmhmm," she said, gesturing toward Vashti, who'd just mentioned that the spell originated in England. England was just awesome like that, now wasn't it?

"Right, the Hover Charm causes objects to levitate and hover, so it and Wingardium Leviosa are one in the same," she said, turning to Grayson. She motioned toward a few students who'd already answered and, as an afterthought, added, "The incantation is Wingardium Leviosa, which doesn't sound to be unfamiliar to lots of you."

House elves...that mention reminded Lexi of cookies. Mmm...

"Concentration...precise pronunciation...swish and flick--yes, it seems most of you know the gist of the Hover Charm," she remarked. She gave Simon a brief nod before addressing the class as a whole.

"So we realize that the spell levitates an object in the air and causes it to hover for some amount of time. That's the basic use of the spell, but what else can we do with this spell?" she asked. "Share with us some unique ways we can use the charm to...well, do an assortment of different things."

Grayson's eyes widened slightly as the discussion had continued around her. Not so much out of worry that she was wrong because she'd covered all her bases. And she hadn't said the others were wrong, just that she wasn't sure if the spells were one and the same. No, it was more because she'd heard Salander's compliment to her, and she hadn't even noticed he'd sat next to her. Strike one for always staying aware of everything around her. But she turned and sent him a smile, not wanting to interrupt class to actually thank him. Plus, as she'd turned, she noticed he seemed distinctly uncomfortable. Weird. She'd always liked Professor Carlton. Maybe she'd have to ask sometime, when she wouldn't be risking points.

She raised her hand, though, as the class discussion continued. Back to trying to earn her house points. "You can use it in defense. Headmaster Tate even mentioned that in class. Like, levitating something above someone's head, then letting the charm drop. I'd think using water balloons would be nicer than a book, like he'd said, though. Or you can use it if you don't want to carry things, like our trunks. Or if you're trying to either get a book from a high shelf or put it back." Locomotor Trunk worked better, but levitating could work just as well. And that last idea worked really well for her, since she definitely couldn't reach the higher shelves in the library. And odds were the librarian wouldn't appreciate her scaling the shelves.

Riley raised his hand after a little bit of thought. "Well Professor...Carlton?" he had to think a minute to be sure he called her by the right name. "You could use the Hovering charm on furnature to lift it off of the ground to make it easier to clean under." the Gryffindor nodded and then made a little smirk, not that he would be the one cleaning.

Alice was digging Professor Carlton's pink hair and wished she could ever be bold enough to do that. Alice had worn her cowgirl clothes (a button up baby blue long sleeved shirt, a pair of jeans, and black cowboy boots) and was glad to see they looked pretty similar to everyone else's.

She made a note in her notebook about the hover charm allowing one to levitate an object, before thinking of things this charm might be useful for.

"You could use the hover charm to arrange your garden?" Alice offered. "You know, to help you move different plants and things around the yard with ease."

Lara was thinking what can the Hover spell be used for...?!?!?
Mmm "if you're in a dengerous situation and need to move something that may hurt you but it can hurt by touching it so the Hover spell can do the trick and solve the situation.." Lara said quickly the moment this idea came to her without even thinking.

Well....

"It can be used to bring things out of reach to you... you know, in replacement of Summoning them. You can use it if you're doing something that requires both hands. Like we did last term." And.... uhh...

It had seemed Ellie had thought there was sooo much more than she could come up with at the moment. Brain failure. Major.

"Well its good to use when trying to keep something out of reach of someone else," Simon answered. The Gryffindor boy had first learned about this charm when his older brother liked to tease him with a game of keep away. Annoying at times but Jonathan got it turned right back on him once he could use magic.

Oh! Oh! Mia raised her hand in the air and wiggled her fingers, "It would come in real handy in the fruit picking season. I could use it to get the fruit from the very top of the tree instead of having to climb it." And falling out of said trees. "Because the best fruit seems to grow right at the top." Obviously Mia hadn't heard of a summoning charm.

His answer was from personal experience, raising his hand, Patroclus demonstrated a life spend travelling.

Rae was in class kind of confused. First of all with the notice in the Slytherin common room, Cowgirl attire? Rae did not have a cow suit! Who did have a cow suit? Well, maybe Destiny, but she was an exception. Rae opted with her old pair of jeans and a top that the shopkeeper kept urging her to buy. Probably the most girly thing she had EVER owned.. And it was so... Bright.... Weird.

Whilst listening to the answers and comments that the class had said Rae hear Evelyn's voice, and she heard this voice say ROPE, TREE, JUMP, WATER, all in the same sentence. WHAT? She had bug eyes as she started at Evelyn thinking of what a genius it was... It was OUTSIDE too! Yessss!

Lesson, right. "You can use it when... You're really lazy and don't want to get up to move something, or something of the sort." That's what Rae would use it for at least.
