3 - Bone Regenerating Potion

Lesson Three

http://i295.photobucket.com/albums/m...otionsClas.jpg

Hecate was not one to dilly dally. She opened the door to the potions classroom and placed on each desk some potion ingredients and waited for the students to file in.
  • 1 gallon of Buffalo Milk Cottage Cheese
  • 1/2 cup of bran cereal
  • 2 tbls of Salt
  • 1 chopped asphodel leaf
  • 2 tsp of dragon (Peruvian Vipertooth) marrow
  • 4 tbls unicorn horn powder
  • A packet of muggle Jell-o gelatin
  • 1 Freshly cut newt (warty newt) tail
  • 2 Crushed sopophorous beans
  • 5 squeezes of Liquid Marshmellow

ooc: This class will stay open for at least 72 hours (probably more.) Also thanks to Antarctica! for taking the picture of the Potions Classroom for me at the WWoHP, and to Ameh for makin it into a pretty graphic!

Lockhartian 10-12-2010 03:22 PM

A not too excited Lockhart mad his way towards the classroom. And paused on the door...was he the first one to arrive? Should he go inside?

Ah, why not?

The boy went ahead, "Good day, Professor" he said, with a nod and very quickly got to his seat, front row and all, the one that was closer to the door, just in case.

Then his eyes went wide...were they going to cook today? Treyen didn't like that, he even pretended he was making a potion when Professor Dodson told them to make jam. He certainly hoped that Professor Lafay was NOT following that path. He was here for Potions, not a Cooking lesson. Tsk, tsk.

Shanners 10-12-2010 03:27 PM

Cottage cheese?

Lori had smelt it from the corridor, and had almost turned around and ran back to her common room. Cottage cheese, was one thing she really disliked, it was gloopy and ick. And it smelt horrible. But she'd gone in, despite, and took a seat in the row behind Treyen. Or so... The seat behind Treyen, near to the door. Heh.

"Hello Professor Lafay'" She greeted before eying the things on the desk. This just... Looked offputting, actually.

neaped 10-12-2010 03:28 PM

"Hello, professor," Hugo said as he took a seat.

hermionesclone 10-12-2010 03:34 PM

Kita walked down to the dungeons and raised her eyebrows. There seemed to be no-one outside. Am i late?! Or has everyone else disappeared? she thought as she turned a full circle to see whether she could see anyone. No such luck. She inched her way towards the classroom as quietly as she could and looked inside.

Three students were already there. Along with the Professor. Letting out a sigh of relief, Kita walked in. "Hello, Professor," she said, smiling. She walked towards the middle of the classroom and sat down. It was then that she noticed the ingredients. Cottage Chesse, Bran cereal, Salt, Jell-o, she thought, Woah! Is that a tail?! She sat back and decided to not think about mixing the cheese with the tail. She shook her head and the memory of the food fight came into her head. She loved Jell-o after that particular incident.

Kita looked around the class again. She hoped there were more students coming. Potions was always great when there were a lot of people there.

Destiny 10-12-2010 03:36 PM

Potion's.

Dun, dun duuun!

The class was never a dull one, that's for sure. With people actually walking out and cauldrons exploding..yeah, Destiny did not know what to expect. She did, however, expect Lafay to be in the classroom already, and she was right!

"Hello, Professor Lafay!" she greeted, as she walked in and took a seat. Placing her things down on the table, she inspected the ingredients already there.

WHAT WAS THAT A TAIL OF!?

TeafortheSoul 10-12-2010 03:41 PM

"Hello professor." Jim greeted with a grin as he entered the room. He didn't get what everyone was on about. Lafay wasn't evil...

... just hot.

He eyed the ingredients on the desks and sat down at random, in front of a desk with a leaf on it. Good oh, he knew what that was.

ooc: ignore if we're not supposed to say what we have XD

Yourenodaisy 10-12-2010 03:46 PM

Emmaleigh made her way down the the Potions classroom. Se was a little more optimistic about the lesson today. Lafay just didn't seem AS scary after last lesson. She entered and found a seat. "Good M-morning, Professor Lafay." Yeah, there was her stutter, she was still nervous. As she looked at the things on the table she resisted the urge to poke things with her quill. What were they going to make today?

Roselyn 10-12-2010 03:48 PM

For some reason, Evelyn was in a particularly good mood.

No, she didn't know why so NO ONE ASK HER!

Adjusting her bag on her shoulder, the Slytherin walked into the room, smiling an actual real smile towards the professor as she walked by. "Good day, Professor." She said, before making her way over to Destiny. DESTINY! Haii! Even though the Slytherin saw her like two minutes previously...

Marie wasn't too sure if she wanted to go to potions class or not, you know since she walked out of the last one. Here she was though walking into the potions room. Seeing Professor Lafay standing right where students had to walk past her to get to a desk she walked by quickly with an even quicker "Hello Professor".

Spotting Destiny at the back of the room she hurried back to sit next to her. Not before smiling at Jimmy as she passed by his desk though. "Hey there." She said as she sat down next to Destiny. Boy was she glad to see someone she knew in the class already.

Looking at the ingredients on her desk she couldn't help but wonder what it was they were going to be making today. And why did they need a tail from a... whatever it was from.

Mwaha!

Destiny knew what had Evelyn so happy, yes she did. It happened at breakfast. Evelyn was sitting at the Slytherin table eating..something, when Destiny went over and secretly stuck a little piece of chocolate on her plate. Her friend must have eaten it, and that was why she was so HAPPY!

She had discovered the YUMMINESS that was CHOCOLATE! Giving her friend a small, she went back to inspect the ingredients.

Woooot!

Not just one friend, she had TWO! Mighty popular, Destiny was.

Giving Marie a smile as she sat down next to her, a small smirk formed as she watched her friend's face as the tail seemed to be spotted.

Hehehe.

Picking it up by the very end, Destiny wiggled it in front of Marie's face for a few seconds before placing it back down and inspecting the ingredients AGAIN.

Ivy Nienna 10-12-2010 04:09 PM

She was probably going to reference their homework as future psychological ammo in case of misbehavior.

The line repeated itself in her head more than a few times as Ivory made her way to the Potions classroom. Stopping just outside of the threshold to the room, she gave her head a little shake to dislodge the thought. The whole first semester had passed without a big incident so that was a major plus....right?

Straightening her shoulders, she walked in and almost gave a start at the Professor standing just right there.

Her head ducking down slightly in nod of greeting, she made her way inside."Good day, Professor..."

Success she was inside.

Watson 10-12-2010 04:18 PM

Emma walked down into the potions room. Yes she had made it early. She smiled as she walked through the door. "Good Morning, Professor Lafay!" she said to the Head of her house. She took a seat in her normal place. Not too close, yet not to far. Right smack, in the middle. She pulled out her pieces of parchment, quill, and ink. She was ready, so she waited. Hopefully, Sel, Trixie, Dianna, or David would come through the door..

Lara entered the class confedently as usual, she was excited about today, she likes potions because she will be doing something at the class not just listening to the Professor.
She looked at her classmates bowed , and said to the professor "Hello Professor!" then she took a desk and waited to the class to begin she wished they wouldn't take long time till start doing the potion.

Canoir Greengrass 10-12-2010 04:24 PM

Freya walked towards the Potion classroom. She opened the door, she saw a few students already there and of course Professor Lafay already there too. "Hello Professor Lafay" she greeted her Professor before making her way to find an empty seat.

ToryMalfoy 10-12-2010 04:31 PM

Potions! Again! Waaah!
Well Potions really wasn't that bad. Right? Right?
Tory tried to tell herself positive things to keep herself motivated for another day of classes while she stepped into the Potions classroom.
"Good morning, Professor" she said while giving out one of the rare Malfoy-Smiles to her head of house.

"You left this on my plate. Don't think you noticed..." she said with a sweet, innocent little smile on her face as she plopped it down right in front of her Slytherin buddy. Her smile may have been friendly, but her eyes were screaming 'Don't do it again or I WILL do something bad in return'.

Teehee.

David entered the Potions classroom. Potions was okay.. it wasn't the best nor the worst. Maybe right smack in the middle? Yep, it had to be. "Good Morning Professor!" he said and walked over to where Emma was sitting. He felt a bit bad that they hadn't talked in a while. "Hey!" he whispered, as he took his things out and took a seat. He gave her a smile.

''Hello professor Lafay, Having a good day, I hope?'' She said as she entered the classroom. She took her seat in the front to the left of the the board,. Pulling out her potions kit and placing everything in an organized position. She pulled out her wand and cleaned all of her potions tools and equipment "Scourgify" She muttered as she went along.

Now since their little chat, Oliver wasn't half as wary of Professor Lafay as he had been. Sure she was abrupt, strict and took no bull crap from anyone, but she was logical and even handed and Oliver respected her for that. If the lad was truly honest, he was even beginning to develop a little soft spot for the woman.

He filed into the classroom making sure to greet her politely, “Hello, Professor Lafay. How are you today?" He smiled at her, deciding against telling she looked 'ravishing' this time.. or, indeed, curtsying like a fool. He didn't think she would share his humour over such behavior. heh.

He took a seat near the front, eyeing the ingredients on his desk Looked interesting...

Well..that was unexpected. Destiny had no idea Evelyn had caught her placing the chocolate on her plate. She was sure her friend was too busy oogling up Josh to notice. But..that was all in the past, and right now, Destiny Shepard had a nice piece of chocolate on her desk.

Sure, Professor Lafay said NOT to eat the ingredients, but this chocolate was not an ingredient. Nope. Wiggling her fingers underneath the desk, just itching to grab the nice piece of YUMMINESS, she looked up at Evelyn. "Oh, yeah. I must have.."

Before she could finish talking, she moved her hands out from under the desk and snatched up the chocolate. Ducking her head, so Lafay couldn't see, she shoved it in her mouth before her friend had a chance to snatch it out of her hands.

MWAHA!

Oh! Sweet Merlin, the report! Hmm..would this be considered work, and could she get points from doing this? After all, Lafay did assign it to her, she should get something..right?

Meh. She would settle with chocolate. Lafay could reward her with chocolate.

With the chocolate swallowed, she peeked her head up and gave the Professor a thumbs up. "I have not forgotten, Professor. I will stop by your office after class?" Yes, that was a question.

Destiny didn't know if she would be busy killing Professor Carlton with her potions or not.

Destiny did not expect that, either!

Wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, she once again gave the Professor a thumbs up. Pffft, Lafay should favor her! Being a little spy and all.

"Sorry, Professor!"

Was she really sorry?

Not. At. All.

eliza22 10-12-2010 05:17 PM

Potions. Grace's very first class. She had a feeling this wasn't going to be pretty; but smiled happily nonetheless as she walked into the room, her wand in her hand. She knew she wouldn't actually need it, but she liked to have it with her. Yes, she was weird. Yes, she knew. No, she didn't care. 'Morning, Proffessor.. er... Proffessor!' she said brightly, realising she didn't know the woman's actual name. Even though it was her Head of House. Yeah, fail.

She bounced excitedly along to an empty desk around the middle of the room. Not too close to the front - no thanks. She sat herself down in the chair and balanced her notebook on her knee, because she didn't want to knock off an ingredient or her cauldron. What were those ingredients, anyways? Cottage cheese, some kind of leaf, and - ooh. J-ello! She licked her lips, and then realised it probably wasn't for them to eat. Shame.

Yourenodaisy 10-12-2010 05:18 PM

oh that was cold, ;)

Emmaleigh smiled kindly at the professor as she returned her greeting, But as she listened to the rest of Professor Lafay's comment, she turned beet red. Her stutter? that wasn't fair. She was mostly getting over her nerves around magic. It was just that Lafay scared her. "I-i'm s-sorry m-ma'am. C-can the n-nurse r-really c-cure a s-stutter?" she asked curriously. She wasn't a bit surprised to hear herself stuttering more than usual, not after Lafay had just embarrassed her so. But if there really was a way to cure stuttering, that was amazing. Em knew that the nurse didn't need to help her, she just needed to get back her courage, but would she ever be courageous in Lafay's class?

Riigghht. She forgot about that last lesson.

Mostly because everything just went into chaos and her mind was on Purple Head and him having a death wish. All the while bringing down HER in the process. Grrr…

"Sorry, Professor. Right after class." She nodded, glancing quickly up and over to her for a moment, before turning her gaze back to the table. Ew. Was that a tail?

Sure, Professor Lafay said NOT to eat the ingredients, but this chocolate was not an ingredient. Nope. Wiggling her fingers underneath the desk, just itching to grab the nice piece of YUMMINESS, she looked up at Evelyn. "Oh, yeah. I must have.."

Before she could finish talking, she moved her hands out from under the desk and snatched up the chocolate. Ducking her head, so Lafay couldn't see, she shoved it in her mouth before her friend had a chance to snatch it out of her hands.

MWAHA!

Jumping almost out of her skin, Evelyn held onto the table with a death grip.

Holy MERLIN! Whyyyy did the professor have to be so loud so suddenly sometimes?

"We’re not eating-" Or maybe they were. Raising a brow as Destiny suddenly snatched the chocolate off the table, and tried to be sneaky about eating it, Evelyn sighed and rubbed her head. "Won’t happen again Professor."

Spazzy Destiny. They were going to have…a spazzy Destiny during the lesson.

Fantastic.

Not.

BanaBatGirl 10-12-2010 05:25 PM

Don't eat the ingredients? Well whatever why not? How did Lafay seriously expect a hungry, strapping young lad like Fletcher to just sit there will all these food-like ingredients in a beautiful array before him and to not eat a single one?!

Surely she wouldn't notice if he just slipped a few bran flakes in his mouth. He was seated in the back corner, after all, and as far away from the mad woman as possible. Fletcher decided to ignore Lafay's warning and instead munched away on some bran as quietly as possible.

Maybe he could drizzle some of the marshmallowy stuff on the cereal and then try that... hehehe....

Wonderstruck 10-12-2010 05:28 PM

Alice walked in to class and set her stuff down at a desk, before sitting down and smiling at the professor.

"Hi Professor Lafay. How are you doing today?"

Alice was thankful that she had eaten something before class, otherwise all this food would be very difficult to resist. She wondered what they would be making today....

Emma smiled. She had remembered her name! she thought. She remembered last year, when Emma was a first year. Goodness she was scared of Lafay. This year, she wasn't that scared of Lafay. Well not too scared... Emma nodded and looked at the ingredients. Emma wasn't that hungry.. she wondered if anyone would eat any of the ingredients.. maybe a Slytherin? No...

Emma gave David a smile and a wave. She hadn't seen him in a while. Note to self, after class was over, she would need to talk to him..

And speaking of Lafay..

Destiny didn't know if she would be busy killing Professor Carlton with her potions or not.

http://i611.photobucket.com/albums/t...nfused0087.gif

Destiny did not expect that, either!

Wiping her mouth with the back of her hand, she once again gave the Professor a thumbs up. Pffft, Lafay should favor her! Being a little spy and all.

"Sorry, Professor!"

Was she really sorry?

Not. At. All.

"Just don't do it again." She said cringing at the word. She hated that word... Sorry. People used it all the time when they didn't mean it. She should ban the word from her class.

Shame.

"Lafay... Miss Philips. I'm surprised you haven't learned all your professor's name. As a first year, you should." She said coldly.

Okay there was no way possible Lafay could have heard that. No way.

"C'monnnnn whutttt?" Fletcher protested, swallowing the bran so he was devoid of evidence. "I can't very well replenish them now, can I? You'll just have to wait a few hours."

Heh. Heheheh. Unless... did she mean replenish like bring her all brand-new bran, and not already been digested bran? OH. Well he'd have to go raiding the kitchens for that, and that would require a disruption of class and it would still be a few hours. He was certain to get distracted by all the nommy, real food if he had to go down to the kitchens.

And anyway, they were already moving on. "Milk without fat has the most calcium, ma'am," he continued as if nothing was wrong with having eaten some bran. "So that would be like, skim milk or soy milk."

If it was possible, Emmaleigh would have turned even redder at Lafay's eye rolling. She just gulped, and nodded. Maybe she could visit the nurse, but if she coulndn't help, well, Em didn't really want to visit Lafay's office.

This question was super easy for Em, since she lived on a farm, so she raised her hand to answer. "S-skimmed milk has more c-calcium. Thats because it r-removes that fat and l-leaves the watery portion that c-contains the calcium." There, she explained it, and didn't stutter too badly while doing it,

'Proffessor Lafay, then,' grace said cheefully, quite unaware of the proffesor's cold tone 'It's my very first day, see, so I didn't remember at first,' she added by way of explanation. Her very first day! Whoopeee! Grace knew it was a little odd to be so excited about school, but not everyone went to a school of magic. So THERE, she had a right to be excited. Magic!

She resisted the urge to poke her ingredients with her wand, and sat on her hands to stop herself from doing so. That would be very not good - and she'd get stuff on her shiny new wand as well. HAHAHAHA. Lafay said boy dung! Fletcher had to bite the inside of his lip, hard, to keep from laughing out loud at the professor. HAHAHAHAHA he was going to remember this lesson.

Grunting as he let out just one little chuckle, Fletch hopped off his stool and shuffled to the cupboard. He grabbed a little more bran --- he had hardly eaten any, after all --- and then slowly shuffled back to his seat.

Once he was reseated, Fletcher wrinkled his nose at mention of a pound of water buffalo cottage cheese. Wowwwww. That sounded more like it belonged in their last Defense Against the Dark Arts lesson than in here.

"Bran," Fletcher answered, half-raising his hand, "is great for your intestinal health."

That was probably the precise answer she was looking for. *snickerrrr*

After getting the kind of milk wrong Alice wasn't sure whether she should try and answer this or not. Well...the worst thing that could happen was she'd be wrong again.

"Bran is very nutrient dense, containing protein, omega 3 and 6 fatty acids, and antioxidants, all of which are good for your body. So, bran would be good to use because it contains so many nutrients that are good for the body, which is in return good for your bones."

Hearing Professor Lafay's answer, Simon corrected his notes before double checking the cleanliness of his cauldron. Sure it was spotless, he added the cottage cheese to the bottom as he was told to do. Continuing to listen, he tried to think of what bran flakes contained that could help in the potion.

"Would bran flakes contain iron which would be another element beneficial to bone strength and help?" he answered tentatively. "So it would help the calcium in the cottage cheese work in the potion."

Then he shot a glance at the GitterPuff as he stood to get some more bran cereal Or better yet we're gonna disarm Fletcher and grow him a hoof?

Awesome!!

Aww. Junk.

Jimmy made a nonchalant face. Nothing wrong with happening to have read something like that in a book right? Didn't mean he knew things.

His hand went up for the next question, though he wasn't entirely sure. "Uhh well, its a starch right? And because of all the fibre, it gets sticky and all, so I guess it'd be a good binding agent for all the rest of what goes into the potion. And obviously the point of fixing a broken bone or regenerating one is that the bone is fused together right, so maybe it helps to bind the bone material too. Its a bit acidic as well so, that'd help with calcium absorption and other minerals that are good for bone health and regeneration."

Paaause.

"Or so I read this one time."

Water Buffalo milk....this potion was starting to sound gross already. How did one get milk from a water buffalo? Weren't they supposed to smell terrible? At least, her mother used to always tell her brothers that they smelled like wet water buffalos when thay came home. Kurumi added the detail to her notes about the milk being high in calcium and just had to accept the fact that baking was not going to give her the right answers this time.

Mrs. Weasley 10-13-2010 03:58 AM

Sidney writes down the imformation about Buffalo milk. She hadn't thought of the cottage cheese being made from any other milk than the cow variety. She raises her hand. "You use Bran in this potion because it is a whole grain. They are rich in Manganese which helps certain enzymes and local regulators to function properly. They help us form strong bones." Sidney hopes she worded everything right.

BearyMay 10-13-2010 10:33 AM

Making sure that her cauldron was clean and ready she added the cottage cheese before scribbling down notes on her notebook. She thought the information about the buffalo milk was cool. Haha.
"Erm..because bran is one of the hard outer layers of a grain and it contains a lot of starch, protein, vitamins and dietary minerals which can help in building strong and healthy bones." she said as she lowered her hand.

He raised his hand slowly. “Um.. doesn't Bran contain Vitamin D?" He asked hesitantly. "Vitamin D regulates the absorption of calcium and.. phosphorus. Both of which are vital for growth and development of bones and teeth.”

"Also a lack of Vitamin D can cause thin, brittle, or misshapen bones.. so it could also be needed for the structure when regrowing bones?"

Lauralicious 10-13-2010 05:17 PM

"Salt is involved in regulating the water content of a body,Professor",Fee said raising her hand again,"Chloride and sodium ions, the two major components of salt, are needed by all known living creatures in small quantities."

Was that the reason?!Maybe they needed to regulate the water content? Would make sense.

Hmm, yes, Evelyn was indeed awake.

She was just, doodling yet pretending to take notes.

But she supposed she should actually participate to make it look like she was really paying attention. The Slytherin didn’t know why, but being in a particularly good mood, well…she wasn’t all twitchy in the class today. Or at least wasn’t worried about every move she made.

"Salt helps retain moisture or liquid in other words, in your body. I think bones contain at least some water, or liquid, so I guess salt…can help with that." Maybe. Sorta. Keep the water in the bones. RIGHT? She wasn't a bone expert.

''Maybe to make its taste a little bit bearable'' Josh said quickly standing up to have a better look of the professor. ''The potion apparently will taste gross and i don't know if salt alone would be enough to subdue its grossness'' and what could make this potion tasty? Josh did not know oorrrr.....

''Maybe strawberry would work professor. Strawberry flavour makes everything nice. And, ah, why do we still need salt when there's already some salt in cheese? Is not there?''

Finished with his speech, Josh sat down back with a content expression on his face. Hehehehe. Then happily tapping on his desk he started to watch Evelyn.

Lara was about to sleep as usual as the Professor kept asking questions ,why don’t all teachers start with the practical part at once?1 she thought to herself.
Anyway she tried to wake herself up by thinking of an answer to the Professor’s question. Well….salt.. well she raised her hand “Salt is a very important element in the human body it’s useful for the blood pressure ….” Lara said then she thought of it ,it was stupid what does blood has to do with bones?!?!?
“Beside ,salt is used in everything because it tastes good!” Oh GOD it was worst , She was totally off topic, she wanted to add something else but she was probably going to make it worse.. so she smiled at the Professor , and put her hands on her cheeks , she thought of going back to sleep would be better than embarrassing herself even more, and she shall wake up when they’ll start doing the potion, and skip the questions and answers part.

Woah.. he was right!? Heh. Awesome. And possibly a first. Oliver returned Lafay's smile with one of his own. Yep.. she was definitely growing on him. *smiley*

He raised his hand to have a stab at her next question, although in all honesty he was pretty much clueless.

“Um... Salt.. or sodium helps regulate nerve and muscular function. Could it be that this is important when bones are being grown rapidly for pain killing reasons.. to prevent muscle cramps and discomfort?”

What. Ever. Just go on and hate me for actually participating. Fletcher rolled his eyes at the professor and crossly folded his arms over his chest. Two could play at this game. He would think before he spoke, oh yes, but he would think of the worst relevant answer possible to her questions.

Alice copied what the Professor said into her notes. So far they were using cottage cheese with Water Buffalo Milk since it had the most calcium, and bran, which was good because it contained phosphorous, which worked with calcium to build strong bones. Now they were going to use Salt....why Salt?

"Well Professor I know that salt is useful in keeping calcium and other nutrients soluble in the blood, and it helps to regulate some body functions. Salt is a good way of carrying nutrients to the cells in one's body."

Emma thought for a few minutes why salt could be useful. Huh? She was trying to remember what salt did. Aha! Now she remembered. "Salt helps in regulating the body and removing all the toxins. It makes a body fit, healthy, and increases the memory and the functioning of the brain." she said. She hoped she had said something correct.. Oh well..

Why salt. So many reasons. And she wanted one. And typically Amy had drawn a blank. Of course she had. So random, stupid answer coming up professor, Your body needs salt to function professor Amy said, she'd sorta zoned out about the actual potion. Ah well salavie

Kurumi raised her hand timidly to answer the dragon lady's next question. "Salt contains sodium. Our body needs sodium order to perform a variety of essential functions and sodium is something that the body cannot produce on its own. I believe I have read somewhere that an average adult requires an intake of 4.2g salt per day...."

Please sweet Merlin, let some of that be right. She didn't want to be waved off again like what had happened with the milk.

"Yes... but there is something more than protein and such..." She said and moved on.

"Yes, Iron... but there is something else." She said moving to the next person.

"Yes, but that's now why it's being used." She said.

Why was this kid adding the fact that he'd read something every time he spoke? "Yes, Master Wilkes, but there is something else."

"It's Professor Lafay!" She said frustrated. "And no. The Cottage Cheese is the base."

"Right... but there is something else." She said.

"Yes, however we are looking for something else." She called on the next person.

"We have the calcium pretty much covered. We need something else." She said and looked at her note. "It isn't the fact it's cottage cheese, it's the fact it's made of buffalo milk. Correct your notes."

"Right, something else though..." she said looking around.

"Sure... not what I'm looking for..." She said and moved to the next student.

"That is correct but not the reason it's being used." She said, "Next?"

"Right... but not exactly." She said and called on the head boy.

"Precisely... Next to calcium, phosphorus is the most abundant mineral in the body. Both work closely together to build strong bones," she said instructing the class, "and about 85% of phosphorus in the body can be found in bones and teeth, but it is also present in cells and tissues throughout the body." She said and smiled at the boy. The Head Boy was very smart... maybe he would be more open to potioneering if she'd gotten him younger... Oh Well.

"Let's move on... Salt." She said raising the salt. "This should be easy... why salt?"

"Sorry, I meant Professor Lafay" Rex apologized to her. "Well, unforunately I can not think what Bran cereal could be used for potion " Rex said to the professor.

Easy? the lad stared blankly. Salt was like-- the enemy of everything healthy right? Too much chips, broken hips and all that? Although the boy didnt want to heed that either, he loved his chips and salsa too much. "Uhm, salt brings out the taste of the cottage cheese Professor?" the lad offered, because they're gonna have to have Fletcher eat this right?

Sapphinelle got all of her notes down in her neat handwriting, and thought about salt. Salt, salt, salt. How did salt affect the body in positive ways that had to do with bones?
Oh, got it! She remembered this when she visited the hospital carved into a salt mountain, and how the saline environment positively affected bones.

"Rock salts are rich in minerals needed for bone strength. Himalayan crystal salt is known to strengthen bones and help ease arthritis." she answered, hoping that she was right. She hated being shot down.

"I'm sure it helps with taste but that is not why it is used." She said.

"Salt helps retain moisture or liquid in other words, in your body. I think bones contain at least some water, or liquid, so I guess salt…can help with that." Maybe. Sorta. Keep the water in the bones. RIGHT? She wasn't a bone expert.

"Right, it helps with water retention." She said, but she didn't seem fully satisfied with her answer...

"No, though I'm sure that helps a bit... and strawberry can have some bad side-effects... so no." She said. There was something about this kid's smug look that bothered her... hmmm...

“Um... Salt.. or sodium helps regulate nerve and muscular function. Could it be that this is important when bones are being grown rapidly for pain killing reasons.. to prevent muscle cramps and discomfort?”

"I'm sure that helps." She said nodding. "There is more to it though." She told him.

"Salt adds flavor," he raised his hand and spoke slowly, as if talking to a three year old. "It also allegedly helps the water boil."

"Well Professor I know that salt is useful in keeping calcium and other nutrients soluble in the blood, and it helps to regulate some body functions. Salt is a good way of carrying nutrients to the cells in one's body."

"Right..." she said "I need more though."

Oh- WAIT he knew this one. "Because the milk, salt, and bran will already taste bad together so why not add a leaf?" Snicker. Alright time to be serious. "Or, maybe because it has like healing...powers. And if you put the leaf in then it would contribute to re-building the tissue around the bone?" Or something like that. He had no clue. Maybe his first answer was better.

Ivory bit her lip as she hurried to jott down all the different meanings for the usage of the particular ingredients in front of her.

Asphodel leaf? Nodding almost unconsciously to Fletcher's answer about the underworld, she lifted her hand hesitantly to add the one tiny almost insignificant tidbit of information she could ween out of her memory. That it was a antispasmodic.
"I think...that is would it be because of the properties it has to suppress muscle spasms? I can imagine that a trait like that could possibly be useful when a person is growing back bones." Smiling nervously, at the end she thought about how uncomfortable it would be for your bones to be growing back while your arm twitched and jerked with the hardening of bone.

She was right? Kurumi could have jumped out of her seat for making the Dragon Lady smile. She looked into her cauldron of goopy cottage cheese. She hoped it wouldn't spoil before they got down to making the potion. Then again, it was freezing in the potions classroom.

Kurumi returned to her notes before thinking about the professor's most recent question and added the details about salt.

SPOILER!!: Kurumi's parchment

Kurumi Hollingberry
Gryffindor First Years
Potions III - bone regeneration potion

Ingredients:
*Cottage Cheese
water buffalo's milk is best as it is highest in calcium
*Bran cereal
high phosphorus and works together with calcium to build strong bones
*Salt
sodium in sale is an essential part to making bones and the body cannot function without it - despite being unable to produce it itself.
*Asphodel leaf
*Marrow
*Horn powder
*A packet of Muggle J-ello
*A Tail
*Sopohorous leaf
*liquid marshmellow syrup

Truth be told...she had no idea. "Professor, the leaves are sometimes used to to wrap around cheese..." Yeah...that was exactly what the dragon lady wanted to hear. "Also, it is said that the plant has a connection with the underworld. In Greek legend the asphodel is the one of the most famous of the plants connected with the dead and the underworld...and remedy for poisonous snake-bites...so maybe it helps protect our bones from damage or...dying?"

Asphodel leaf? Alice had no idea what that was so she was just going to sit and listen on this one.

Ugh!

Destiny did not like these questions. She never knew the right answer and she didn't know why the Professor even bothered asking her. Well, it wasn't like she only asked her, she did ask the whole class. But, the Slytherin was SURE, as the woman glanced around the room, her eyes lingered on her for a little longer.

Meaning, the question was directed right at her!

Raising her hand ever so slowly, she looked at the leaf in question. "The asphodel leaf is narrow..and bones are narrow..so it makes sense to use them."

Sense. Destiny was full of it.

Mrs. Weasley 10-14-2010 05:57 PM

Sidney looks through her Potion textbook. She finds the Asphodel roots mentioned, but nothing on the leaves. Apparently the root is an ingredient in the Draught of Living Death. There is a mention of the ancient Greeks also using the root's pulp was used in the treatment of joint and nerve diseases. The roots also contain a certain amount of alkaloids:

Quote:

Alkaloid: A member of a large group of chemicals that are made by plants and have nitrogen in them. Many alkaloids possess potent pharmacologic effects. The alkaloids include cocaine, nicotine, strychnine, piperine, caffeine, morphine, pilocarpine, atropine, methamphetamine, mescaline, ephedrine, and tryptamine
The plant also has an association with the dead. In Hades the Asphodel Meadows were the places where the dead who possessed both evil and good characteristics lived. Asphodel is also the food the dead eat. I never knew the dead needed to eat. I wonder if that is why we add the leaves to this potion. Let's face it when the body decomposes, all that's left is the bones. I think the alkaliods are more like muggle drugs. Doubt they would have anything to do with growing bones. All this imformation and I still can't come up with a logical reason why we put the leaves in this potion.

Sidney raises her hand. Professor Lafay hasn't had an opportunity to yell at her in a while. I'm sure yelling at me will make her day. "Professor in ancient Greek Mythology, Hades has a meadow called Asphodel Meadow. The dead also ate this plant. Muggles also associate the Asphodel plant with death. They often plant this plant in cemetaries. When we die and the body decomposes, all that is left is our bones. Could that be the reason why these leaves are included in the potion?" I know it's the craziest answer ever given, but I can't come up with anything else that makes sense.

The reason for that, is that a human bone's marrow won't magically adapt itself to the DNA of the patient, while this creature can. Which creature's bone marrow do you think this is?"

Simon had been taking notes off of the correct answers of his fellow students as well as Professor Lafay's own explainations of things. At her last question, he looked at the bone marrow to try and think of what it could possibly be from. The clue was that it was a magical creature but even that limit left it wide open. Finally he raised his hand to answer, one creature coming to mind.

"Is it the bone marrow of a thestral?" he questioned thinking of the only creature that came to mind when thinking of bone or skeleton.

Adelyn cringed. Bone marrow! Triple gazzilion eww! What animals was it supposed to be! Ha! How was she supposed to know? Taste it? She just took out a wild guess, not caring about being right or wrong. "A fwooper's bone marrow." she replied.

"Maybe it's the bone marrow of a phoenix, since the phoenix is 'immortal' and magical. " Tory said with her eyebrows raised. Just a guess, she thought, if the answer was wrong it wouldn't hurt.

Anna opened her mouth wide. Who was that mean to kill an animal? "What! I'm sorry, I don't like to handel animal guts" she said closing her eyes tightly.

What in the world? Phoenix?

Surely that wasn't an ingredient in this. Those things were rare enough. However, Evelyn couldn't help but wonder if that were really true. And if so, then the professor must have been trying to prove a point about phoenixes or something.

But, back to the question and answers. "Perhaps the bone marrow of a boomslang?" Eh, well the skin of those were used in polyjuice potion and, for some reason, growing bones and turning into someone else, connected in her mind.

Lara was listening closely, she wanted to start making the potion , but it seemed that the Professor had some questions left. She wasn't an expert of creature but she knew some, so she raised her hand and said "Maybe it's a bone of a unicorn?"
