Sitting alone which was his norm, William looked around as everyone began practicing the new spells that the professor had taught them. Conjuring ink and quill then writing with it and watching the ink disappear, now that was something he could definitely use for when he wanted to write something no one else needed to know about. Writing everything he could down, closing out all the spell casters around him - distractions were the worst - he began concentrating on his task of getting the necessary information down before he forgot it. The downward movement of the wand before saying the spell to conjure a quill of your color, then the circular motion with his wand while thinking of the ink he wanted. Sounded simple enough, on paper of course.
Looking up he noticed a few of his friends there getting to work and frowned. If they could do it so could he. He was smart, he could do anything he set his mind too. Well that's what professor Kazi had taught him. He missed Potions class he thought frowning once more before shaking his head and tilting it once to the side. Flicking his wand he held it loosely in his left hand and stared at the empty space on his desk. Concentrate on the color of quill you want, nothing too fancy now Will. Blue is a good color to start with now he thought to himself as he pictured a blue quill in his hand. With a downward movement of his wand he said, "Calamus!" in a strong normal voice.
He watched, his blue eyes staring as the space before him filled up with a quill, but it wasn't blue. It looked like it had been dipped in a pike green color. "Hmm, not quite what I was going for..." he muttered, writing this down in his journal. Maybe he had done the wand movement wrong. holding his wand again he moved it in a downward motion, again focusing on the blue color of the quill. "Calamus!" he said a bit stronger, his face taunt. This time the quill appeared and it was blue. A little lighter than what he wanted but it was definitely blue.
Now that he had his blue quill he needed his ink. Pink looked like a good color he mused, concentrating now on an ink bottle full of pink ink. It was a tough color to get on his first try but he was determined to get it. holding his wand in his hand with a strong grip he looked down at the place where he wanted the ink bottle to be and did a circular motion with his wand as he said, "Encaustum!" in a strong determined voice. Just like the quill the bottle of ink appeared and it was pink, but a darker magneta color. "That will have to do." he muttered to himself, a soft smile on his face. Picking up his blue quill he dipped it into the magneta colored ink and began writing. If he had done the spell right, it would vanish soon.

Maybe she was trying to conjure something too difficult, maybe she just needed to think about one color instead of two. Holding her wand up again she thought about a plain green quill this time. "Calamus!" she said as she performed the downward motion with her wand. She smiled when she seen a simple green quill laying there on her desk. She picked it up and looked it over. Yep, it was a quill.
Now to attempt the ink. Knowing right away what color ink she wanted she waved her wand in a circular motion, "Encaustum!" she said thinking about a bottle of green ink. To her surprise there sat the ink, in the bottle, right next to the quill she had just conjured.
She took the lid off the ink, grabbed the quill and started to doodle on her parchement. Before she knew it she had drawn several hearts with Carter's name in them. She knew they would disappear soon but that was okay with her because she would just draw them all over again.
Carter laughed. Yeah, him cleaning the spilled ink with his parchment was smooth. He watched out of the corner of his eye Marie conjure things. She got the ink in the bottle. She was so brilliant.
He looked back down at the paper. The huge ink blot was beginning to disappear. He looked over at Marie's paper and noticed that she was drawing his name with little heart around it.
Smirking he wrote down on his parchment, I see you... and then drew a smiley face.

Marie was sitting there still drawing hearts :heart2: with Carter's name in them when she caught him looking over at her parchment. She then looked down at his parchment when he wrote something on it. Crud, did that mean he seen what she was writing? Now she felt really embarrassed and could feel herself blushing. Sure, he was her boyfriend but still, he caught her writing his name several times with a heart around each one.
Looking back down at her own parchment she wrote, I see you too... then winked at him.

Ellie made a mental note of the upcoming birthday. She'd need to get a present in Hogsmeade. "That's nice! What did you get, then?" It seemed like Amy to not have the patience for presents. She didn't either, really.

Five bottles of black ink and two brown quills later, Arya had finally managed to keep the two items conjured for more than eight minutes. Not to mention all of her doodles had managed to stay on the parchement. Now that she had this down pact, she decided to try and conjure a different color ink.
Tapping her wand on the side of her cheek, she thought about what color she wanted before pointing her wand at the table and making a circle. "Encaustum." After a moment, a small bottle of yellow ink appeared on the table. Smiling at her bottle, she dipped her quill into the ink, and began to draw more creatures. Waiting to see how long the ink would last.

Alex flourished her wand stating, "Reverto." turning the watch back into a lock. THat spell was just too easy for her now, three circles.."Horolos." She chanted the lock turning mostly to watch, a lovely silver with a green snake with only a partial of the handle thing that closed.

Preston stood as the students milled about and took there places. A few in each; precisely what he'd anticipated. "Good good."
Moving to a place where everyone could see him, before drawing his wand. "Two simple conjuring spells to start, but having looked over the notes from past terms, they haven't been covered here, yet. Some of you may have learned them on your own, in which case, I'd like to ask you to help those who are learning it for the first time." Preston smiled, fully believing that you reinforced your own learning when you helped someone else.
"It's happened to nearly all of us. You suddenly need to write something down, and are without quill and ink. Or your only quill breaks in class. Or your ink shatters in your bag. These two spells prove terribly useful."
Standing in front of the table, he made a straight downward motion with his wand, as if he were drawing the letter l. "Calamus." Resting on the table, then, was a simple brown feather quill. Picking it up, Preston twirled it in his fingers. "A simple quill. No enchantments, since as we covered in class, you cannot conjure items with magical properties. But it will suffice for writing. The incantation, for those who are interested, comes from the part of the quill that serves as a reservoir for ink. Conjuring a feather that is not ready for use would be a different spell."
Setting it back on the table, Preston pointed his wand at an empty space next to it. Drawing a small circle, he spoke softly. "Encaustum." Appearing there, then, was a small container of black ink. "Again, no enchantments. Just plain black ink."
Holstering his wand, Professor Kingsley addressed the group. "Why might it not be the best idea to write something you want to keep for a long time with this ink? Or, for that matter, with conjured paper?"
He looked over to his NEWT students as if to say he would be with them in a moment.

Gold had no idea what to do with, or make of, it.
"Isn't it possible to conjure a self-inking quill, though? How does that happen, sir?" Since he had said 'no enchantments.' There had to be some sort of simple explanation, because Gold was pretty sure she had conjured a self-inking quill, more than once. She had always thought that depended upon intent, you know. What kind of quill you got. Of course, she knew she couldn't conjure anti-cheating quills. She had tried a couple of times, failed, and then realized she couldn't get those. Though it was possible to turn a simple quill into the anti-cheating kind, with charm-work.
Transfigurational theory. She never got it completely, even when she could carry out the spell related to it, perfectly. It looked like Gold was struggling with it, once again. Better not to think too much of it.
Drawing a small circle with her wand, Gold cast a silent Encaustum to make her mind feel better, and picked up the bottle of pink ink that the spell conjured, for her. She wondered how yummy it would taste, if the ink inside were chocolate-flavoured. She had bought chocolate-flavoured ink in Diagon Alley, this summer. She still had a few of those inkpots, in fact.
Preston looked to his NEWT students and nodded. It was a good question.
"You can't create magical effects with conjuration, so, for example, if you were to conjure a time-turner, it would just look like a time-turner but wouldn't work. Same principle applies to quills or racing brooms or wizard chess pieces. Like the geminio charm, as well. If you duplicate something with a magical effect, you only get the appearance, as Professor Kade taught last term."
He paused. "But, if you own a self-inking quill and you know where it is, you could certainly summon it with a spell and it would look to anyone else as if you'd conjured it."
"It would certainly be easier - and cheaper - if we were able to simply conjure our own magical implements. Especially quills." Given how often people were prone to breaking or misplacing them. "But then we'd never have any need for shopping, now would we?" Preston grinned. "Those manufacturers close guard their charms, too. I could charm a quill to be self-inking with some thought behind it, but it would likely not be the same spell that, say, Scribbulus uses, nor as good."

"What we write with it might not last, either," Gold offered. Like conjured ink. Though charms could obviously last much longer, especially if that was what they were designed for. Plus, there were all sorts of other points to consider, such as the ability and experience and intent of the caster.
"Is that why self-inking quills seem to sell less than simple quills, professor?" she asked, a little curiously. Self-inking quills were charmed, and the magic could obviously wear off. Simple quills, on the other hand, were the good, old-fashioned way.

Though Gold used self-inking quills all the time. Unless she had pink ink on her. Then she switched to that. But, usually, she made sure she carried a self-inking quill around. Shani had taught her never to go anywhere of importance, without quill, ink and parchment. Even if you had a wand, to conjure them.
Not that she usually took his advice seriously, you know?
She nodded at Professor Kingsley, as she jotted down a few notes, and looked around to see if any of the younger students needed help with the two charms Professor Kingsley had taught, a while ago.

Cedric finally dared to speak up. Even though he could have asked their Professor much earlier about the thing that made him wondering and truly baffled, what his classmates had asked Professor Kingsley had really took his interest and he'd heard and learned quite many things.
As a saying implies, the more a person listen the more he gets information, the more he speaks the less he gets what he wants to know. But in his case, the saying weren't that applicable to him 'cause he needed to know about certain stuffs, most definitely.
"Err. Sir, I have asked you about this in our class before but you said that it was quite advanced and insightful and that you didn't want to lose your students and really, neither did I want to lose my classmates. But now that advanced questions can be answered, I'll ask this again to you," Cedric said right after he made a deferential bow intended for their professor and so, he proceeded talking with a hint of eagerness but a little bit of shyness, "So umm, sir, what is the essence of a person that remains when he/she transfigures into something that would unstranfigure he/she into his/her real-self once the spell wears off?"

Ellie laughed. "Sounds like a plan!" she said.
So, since she'd better be doing something, she rummaged through her bag and found a muggle eraser. No idea what that was doing in there... Her family never used pencils or anything... Ohs well, she flourished her wand at it, "Horolos!" she said, picturing one of those weird pocket watches. She watched it change before her eyes. She shrugged, that was cool... But she wanted something new already.
Those spells were rather useful. Which is why Treyen should leave the Horolos one, which was already somewhat mastered, for later.
First, the quill and ink one!
Conjuring things, yeah, that was way better. Calamus, then. Straight downward motion? Got it! Incantation, got it! Now...practice.
With the right motion, and the right focus, "Calamus!" Treyen said, without any sign of any quill. But no matter, that means nothing. He just needed to focus a bit more. "Calamus!" he said, downward the wand went...and...oooooooh! There was a quill! There was a quill! There was a quill! The boy was smiling, he was closer everyday to becoming the next Gilderoy Lockhart. Yes.
He eyed the quill, very pleased with the result. And now it was time for the ink. He wasn't going to try and conjure a color one, it'll work out great if the black one appears. Little, little circles. "Encaustum!" and most to his amazement, there it appeared! He had a tinsy tin of black ink.
As soon as he was about to try writing in his piece of parchment...the quill disappeared. So, yeah, it didn't last long.
"But enough about quills. Are there more advanced topics that you would like to cover?" He looked at his three oldest students. This was time for them; they were clearly proficient and so he looked to them to see what areas they desired enrichment in.
Oh. Gold definitely had something on her mind. She raised a hand, once again out of habit. "I would like to practice inanimate-to-animate transfiguration nonverbally, professor."
She lowered her hand, and looked down at the textbook in her lap. She hadn't realized she had placed any there.
