Library Reference Desk

Here is where you will find the records for nearly everything at the school from the Gobstone champions to the lists of alumni and attendees. A bureau positioned to the side of an old desk stores information on the whereabouts of said information. To its opposite rows of rich wood shelves house the reference section. These books are not meant to be checked out, but while you are in the library you may make use of them.

Behind the old desk sits an old man with graying hair, the schools librarian, David C. Kapoor with his face, deeply buried in some book or another. On his desk to his left side, a relic from his earlier ventures in teaching; a magic eight ball that never says the same thing twice and a small dirty brass service bell. As you approach the desk, Mr. Kapoor appears to be deeply invested in his reading. So much so, that he's gone to sleep.

Ah....ha. Fourth floor. No classrooms here, just the.... library?

And why was Duncan Fletcher wandering around the library before he even had an ounce of homework? Because the boy needed books, that was why. It wasn't like he was a weirdo Ravenclaw who liked to read or any of that nonsense, no, he had just... not bought his schoolbooks while in Diagon Alley and was now hoping instead to check them out.

From the school library. Mhmm. And hopefully the man behind that reference desk there was the librarian.

"Excuse me, sir," the Hufflepuff approached the desk and awkwardly ruffled the hair at the back of his head as he stood there. "I have a favor to ask of you."

He jolted awake with a "ByUH!" before looking to see where the voice that had woken him came from. "Favor? Why, of course. What can I do for you, young man?" He wished he had considered the nature of said favor before agreeing to it as the element of surprise was always alive and well at Hogwarts Castle.

Ah good, he'd agreed to a favor before even hearing Duncan's proposition. This would be easy.

"You see, Mr. Librarian," Fletcher took a step closer to the desk, "I was wondering if you had, say....... all the textbooks required for a fifth year....... on reserve somewhere in the library? And if so.... I was wondering if students were allowed to check those books out, perhaps? Just as a theoretical situation, if say, a student couldn't aff--- remember to buy his books in advance...."

And Mr. Librarian had already agreed to the favor.

No give Old man Masterson a noogie. No forge my parents signature so I can skip out on finals during the term. Not even so much as an use a trimming charm to shave my name into the back of Headmaster Tates head.

Yes. Kapoor had lucked out. This time. And it made him smile that the favour was really nothing out of the ordinary.

"Why yes! We do have some of your textbooks on reserve, but they have a lessened time limit on how long they may be checked out. Instead of the standard two weeks, they may only be kept out for one. I haven't seen you around before. Are you new to Hogwarts?" He ventured a guess.

"Ah, I see," Fletcher cautiously returned the librarian's smile. "I'm new yeh could say, yeah," he nodded. "So you have all the books a fifth year would need?"

Excellent, he wouldn't have to EVER spend any of his precious money on books ever again!

Maddie was queuing by the desk as well, so heard the boy's request for fifth year books
'Ex - excuse me?' she said nervously 'Are you looking for fifth year books? I bought a set, for a little advanced reading, but you can have them, if you'd like' she offered 'They've not been written in, or anything. I'm Madeline Force, first year. I should be third, though - my muggle parents wouldn't let me come at first. too far - I live in France...' she trailed off, embarrassed

Etoile walked slowly up to the libarian's table. It was her first day in Hogwarts and she knew exacly what book she wanted.
"Exuse me." She said as loudly as she could. "I was wondering If you have a copy of An Anthology of Eighteenth Century Charms? I was going to buy it in Diagon Alley, but they didn't have it." She shrugged. "They told me I should try here."

Fletcher had been waiting for a response from the librarian, but if random Ravenclaw girls were going to start offering him books, well who was he to say no?

"Yeh, I er... forgot to buy mine before the term started," he turned toward the younger student. That was the explanation he was going with. And who was he to judge a girl who randomly bought a full set of textbooks just for 'a little advanced reading.'

"Nice to meet ya, Madeline," he offered her a handshake and an amused expression at her rambling. "I'm Fletcher."

'It's nice to meet you too, Fletcher' smiled Madeline, shaking his hand and then digging in her bag for the books. She pulled the stack out triumphantly and offered them to Fletcher. 'Here you are!' she smiled.

"The pleasure is mine," Fletcher's eyebrows jumped toward his hairline as the girl just happened to produce the stack of books right there on the spot. The boy took the hefty stack from her and then took a step back toward the reference desk.

Well, never mind the librarian then!

"Are you sure you don't want anything in exchange for these, Madeline? I have to admit this is not how I saw myself getting my schoolbooks for this term..." He chuckled nervously and craned his neck to read the first title on the pile. How Not To Blow Off Your Fingers On The First Day by Julius Gummidge.

Delightful. Oh yeah, this was exactly what he would pick up for 'light reading.'

Maddie saw his eyebrows go up, and laughed
'No, I don't want anything for them' she said 'And I know you're probably wondering why I have them with me - I was planning on reading some of them, and came to find somewhere quiet to do just that!'

All right, that sounded like a plausible enough explanation. And from what he'd heard about the people wearing blue, she was in the smart House. So he supposed it wasn't all that weird to run into someone who liked reading at the library of all places.

"Well in that case.... thanks! Thanks a lot." Fletcher nodded and started toward the exit of the library with his stack in tow. "Don't suppose I'll be needin ter check anything out, thank ya sir," he called back to the librarian.

The best idea now would be to get these back to his dorm before anybody changed their mind about giving them to him.

Amy walked over to the reference desk, um excuse me proffesor, she asked the sleeping proffessor, Proffessor, proffesor, she looked at his desk, proffessor Kapoor?, um proffessor, can I take these books out please? she asked him timidly

Oh, how perfect! Someone had kind-heartedly offered the young man called Fletcher a set of books.
"No, I don't suppose you shall. Not with generous offers like that. Miss, for your supportive spirit in helping this young man with his studies, 3 points to Ravenclaw."

"An Anthology of Eighteenth Century Charms?" Kapoor sat back in his chair causing it to slide a little. His index finger scratched one side of his greying beard as he swished to the side still seated in the rolly chair. He opened up one of the drawers from the bureau and found the book and its location. "Ah, yes. That would be...now, let's see...you'll find that book to the left and three rows down. There will be a section for old fashioned magic for the history enthusiast and curious."

"Yep!" A short answer given with a smile and Kapoor took hold of the books the young student was holding so as to place the proper check-out procedures on them. Once finished, he handed them back. "Will that be all, Miss?"

3 points? She'd earned house points?! For... just being nice?
'Thank you, Sir' she said politely 'Um, Sir, I was wondering if you had any books on Patronus Charms, perhaps books that would teach me how to cast them?' she asked

Selena looked at the man there. "Excuse me, sir," Selena said a bit shyly, "Do you know if there are any helpful books about Quidditch and Patronus charms?" Selena asked. Selena needed to figure out how exactly a broom worked and how to cast a patronus charm. Her last attempt at the charm was a fail

Emily walked into the library, dragging her sister behind her as usual. Emily's hair was in two pigtails and she wore a white and silver tiara off the side of her head. Emilya's hair was down and she had a thin yellow headband that had a bow off the side. Both Emily and EMilya wore their robes over their clothes but you could see them under them. Emily wore a pink shirt with a big smiley face on the front, and three beaded neclaces one in blue, one in yellow, and one in green. She wore an orange skirt and two different coloured chuck tailor sneakers with white knee high socks. Emilya wore a yellow dress with a white polka dot print on it.

Emily walked up to Mr.Kapoor's desk, "Hello sir, I'm back again. Thank you for your help last year, this is my twin sister Emilya." Emily pulled Emilya by the hand closer to his desk.

Emilya decided to be uncharacteristically sociable and pleasant so she stuck out her hand and in a shaky voice said "pleasure to meet you Mr.Kapoor, trust you had a lovely summer?" Emilya was determined to stop being shy.

OOC: TheBestButter (the person who plays Emilya) is here and is too lazy to RP right now and she told me to play Emilya for her and I'm too lazy to keep logging in and out so I hope it's not too much trouble if I just RP both in my account until she's not lazy anymore ....

Was approached with a similar question. "Patronus charms, yes." He drew out the card with the books information and location and hit it with a few spells the first of which was a duplicating charm. The little sheet of stiff parchment folded itself in half and flapped both of it's halves until it was airborn and resembled a small thin paper butterfly. "If you would, please follow that parchment. It will show you directly to the section in which you may find a plethora of defense charms, including many on the casting of Patronus charms." He told the students.

Kapoor looked up from his writing to see two girls enter and approach the desk. They were brightly dressed and one was looking a great deal happier than when he last saw her. They bore a striking resemblance and if Kapoor didn't know better, he'd swear they were...

Sisters? Twins in fact! How wonderful!

"Emilya, it is wonderful to meet you. Have you young ladies come to check out any books from the Hogwarts Library? I can recommend some great short-fiction." He said warmly and trying to offer a suggestion.

A very faint tapping noise made known Ari's presence a few seconds before she entered the room. In her right hand, the long, white cane. In the left hand, which was usually reserved for feeling along walls, was a tall leather box with a beaten handle and two silver buckles holding shut the lid. It made her lean to one side slightly with it's weight.

Ari's red-brown hair was chopped shorter than it had been last year, making her look rather boy-ish as it stuck out in all directions. Her pale face was hard and reserved, and made to look paler with the dark sunglasses that sat very close to her eyes. Mister Kapoor was busy, she knew, so Ari stayed quiet and still, becoming almost invisible in the room itself. She collapsed her cane, slipping it into the pocket of her grey skinny jeans and switched the heavy box to the other hand.

Rafe wanted answers, and there weren't any better answers that you could find then those in books! Rafe approached the front desk. Wow, the new librarian looked cool, like all full of wisdom. "Umm...do you have anything on Transfiguration? Specifically, aun-ti-may-yus," he mumbled.
