"They'll last a fair while," Sage replied, "I'd say a good few days and then you'll start to feel the effects wearing off.. then you'd just need to replace the leaves." And as for the other question? "Mugwort grows wildly all over the British Isles, except I'm afraid.. in Scotland." Which just happens to be where they were. Bummer, huh? "I've been growing a small supply in the greenhouses though."
Cadence scribbled down these notes in her notebook and smiled and Professor Dodson. "Thank you, Professor!" she said happily. Hmm... so she couldn't get more here, but she could probably find plenty of it at home and stock up! Yes? That sounded like a lovely plan!

After she had some leaves mushed up, she looked into the mortar. Ew. Looked like... spinach? Ish...?
"You know," she said slowly with a joking smile, nodding, "You could have my mushed up Mugwort leaves, Professor." Hehe. Even the name sounded gross.
"Well, if you don't want them I'd certainly be glad to have them," Sage said, unabashed. He'd found the leaves really helpful when he'd been traipsing around and landscaping gardens. It was a shame the girl wasn't willing to give them a try though..

Might as well just take them off right?
"Those leaves look just about perfect!" Sage exclaimed excitedly, beaming at the girl. "The effects are best when you don't wear socks. See, the Romans wore them in their sandals and I'm pretty sure they didn't have socks back then." Sandals and socks. "It's down to the individuals preferences though." Personally, he wore socks.

Odd. How come this lad couldn't ask the Potions professor himself? He'd have to go back to the castle after class anyway. "Tell you what, I'll do a bit of research and I'll let you know next lesson, okay?" He'd feel a little silly asking the potions mistress how a mortar and pestle had acquired it's name. He gave the leaves a little inspection. "Just a little mash will do. You just need to open up the stomata a little.. the pores on the leaf."

"Okay Professor." Simon said as he looked at his leaves and did one last mash. "There Professor, I think that's good?" Simon was going to like Herbology he was sure about that.

Her leaves looked perfect? Of course they were perfect! Pfft. "Thanks."
Sighing at what she already knew, Evelyn looked up in surprise at the professor when he did answer her question. The effects were best when you don't wear socks. Well wasn't that all handy dandy...
She wasn't about to take her shoes and socks off in class though. Too many scars on the top and bottom that could be seen. An imperfection she did not enjoy. So, her footwear stayed on, until after the class maybe. There wasn't a time limit on the leaves right? She could keep them until the end of the class.
Too bad there were no dressing rooms or anything nearby she could. Would make it easier.
Sidney takes a Mugwort leaf and puts it in her mortor. She crushes it until the leaves are broken up good and some of the juice is coming out. "If you wear socks professor, should you place the Mugwort inside your socks?" Makes sense. The Romans didn't wear socks, so the Mugwort was right next to their skin.
Patroclus, placed the Mugwort leaves into his mortar and began grounding it up. Everyone was concerned about taking of their socks and shoes, Patroclus could help but wonder if everyone had stinky feet! He laughed quietly to himself.
Kicking off his shoes, Patroclus wiggled his toes, "Ohh the floors cold" he laughted again.

Iris looked at the Professor as he answered her question, "Oooh... Thanks. That makes sense... Kinda." She grinned a bit, at the sillyness of it; it was completely daft naming it that, but still, There was nothing she could do about it, was there?
She looked back down to her aloe vera leaf, and began to do what everyone else was doing. Carefully, she muttered "diffino." with her wand pointed to the leaf, and she carefully cut off the spiked edges. Then, she repeated the spell to cut open the middle of the leaf, to get to the goo.
Scooping it out, Iris looked at it. She had no real need for it right now... So she got a vial and poured all of the gel into the phial. There. All done. Well, that bit was, at least.
Hehe.
Herbology wasn't so bad, after all.

He moved towards the side of the classroom where he'd left a cutting of Mugwort. It looked like a common weed. "Mugwort was used in ancient times, by Roman centurions as a cure for sore feet." He carefully picked off a couple of the leaves and dropped them in a mortar on his desk. "The leaves can be crushed up," he explained, demonstrating as he used a pestle to grind the leaves, "and the result is then placed in your shoes!" Wasn't that cool!? He certainly thought so.

She watched the professor as he explained about the herb he was going to be teaching them about. It looked pretty... plain. Like a normal weed. For all Iris knew, it COULD be a normal garden weed.
Maybe the professor was just fooling them?
That was unlikely though, because the stuff he was saying sounded really true. And kinda interesting. Iris wouldn't admit that though.
She listened as he said that you mushed them up and then put them in your shoes. EWW! No thanks. It would ruin the shoes. Unless they held magical properties to avoid grass stains on the inside of your shoes. As the professor gave them the instructions, Iris got out of her seat and went to fetch a mortar and pestle, collecting a handful of leaves on her way back.
Iris put her mortar on the workbench, and dropped the leaves into it, like how the professor did. Then she picked up the pestle and started mushing the leaves with it. She crushed and grinded the leaves until they were all mushy and just mush and looked up at the professor. "Professor, what do we do with the Mugwort when its all mushy? ... Because I don't have any need for it. My feet are perfectly fine." She said plainly. Maybe they'd be able to put the mushy leaves into a phial or something, to save them for when they would be needed.

Sage gave a nod. "That would be the most effective way, yes.. Sidney." He agreed, glancing down at the label she'd made to help him out name-wise. "Depending on the thickness of your socks though, you could get away with putting it in your shoe and wearing socks over it." Which was what HE did.

Daniel gave the professer a little smile when he told him the gel wouldn`t do anything to him. "Tank oo!" he said finger still in mouth. He slid it out and wiped it on his robes. No one saw that, did they? It tasted okay. Slightly planty.
Mogwart? Well they got the name right. It did sound like some sort of medicene. Crushing! Daniel looked forward to that and went over to get the things he needed into a bowl and hurried back to his table. He got the pestle and began.
With a crunch, crunch here and snap, snap there. Here a snap there a snap. Snap snap, snap everywhere. Daniel hummed the to the lines in the tune of Old Mcdonalds farm. And wow! He had mushy leafy stuff. "So what professer? We just put them into our shoes? Won`t it make them smelly and stuff?" Not that Daniel minded much but his mum would kill him if he ruined his shoes.

Iris nodded and listened, doubting that she'd need it within the next three days, "Oh... Okay. I think I'll leave it here then, so it doesn't go to waste." She nodded once more and smiled. She then returned to mushing up the Mugwort leaves, figuring that they didn't looked mushed up enough.
Alcemee had used the aloe goop one her hands before, and now she mashed up the mugwort leaves until they looked like most of the other students' leaves looked.
Ericks delightedly smashed up the mugwort leaves. They soon resembled the other students leaves. They looked very cool. "Professor, can I keep these?"he asked. He didn't need them but they felt cool.

It's good moisturiser though, if you want to rub it into your hands or forearms."
He moved back towards the front of the class. Almost time to move on.
Lysandra looked at the gel. She gathered some in her hands and rubbed it into her skin. It felt really soothing and cool. She gathered some and put it in the vial. This stuff could last a while so she didnt need anymore and she didnt want to waste it, like the Professor said.

"Healing plants!" He said, clapping his hands together to catch their attentions once more. "Does anyone know of a plant or herb that can be used to soothe feet?"
Lysandra was clueless. She couldnt think of any healing plants, so she just let the class answer and she would take some notes.

"All very good answers.. proof that a plant doesn't have to be magical to possess healing properties." And another mention of the herb he'd been named after.
Catnip. The herb that drove cats crazy. "Also known as Nepeta cataria, yes. Has a sort of soothing numbing effect."
"Those are all very good answers," the Professor beamed, proud of their Herbology knowledge. The last professor must've taught them well. "Should any of you get sore feet, you'll be up and about in no time at all. The herb I was thinking of though, is Mugwort."

Lysandra walked up to grab a few Mugwort leaves, a mortar and pestle and walked back to her seat in the back of the class. She placed the leaves in the mortar and started to grind the leaves with the pestle. She continued to grind, hearing the leaves crunch as they met the pestle. She saw juice come out. Awesome she said. She had never thought that plants could be so cool.
"Nice work everyone, now we're going to get a closer look at the gel inside the leaf. The gel with all the 'healing powers.'" Sage moved to the table infront of him again, laying the leaf flat on the surface. "This process is often known as 'milking aloe vera,' the professor explained as he carefully retrieved his wand.
"For this we'll be using the severing charm, like so." Muttering the incantation 'diffindo,' Sage directed his wand first up either side of the leaf, neatly trimming off the slightly spiny sides. "By cutting off the edges, we're making the gel easier accessible."
He then moved his wand to cut vertically lengthwise through the center of the leaf, cutting it neatly into two pieces which he proceeded to hold up. "After slicing down the middle, you can see the gel is encased inside."
He ran his index finger inside, collecting a goopful of the thick, clear gel-like substance. "Go ahead and 'milk your aloe vera,'" he said to the class, "if anyone needs help with their severing charm ask me or one of your peers."
"Thank god I learned this cutting spell in Potions class watching a fifth year doing it...Diffindo must be a popular charm..." Kate thought.
She took an aloe leave. "Diffindo" A very soft and straight cut...perfect
Then, she took the leave in her left hand and "milk" the gel with her right hand "eeeewww, this is sticky and slimy and slippery...but if it´s good for the skin...lets use it" she said in a low voice and began to spread aloe in her arms, hands and face .."ahhhhh, my skin is so tight, it feels like I was done a face lifting haha"
Kate took a bottle, with clumsy movements because of the aloe and dropped the rest of the gel in it."I will keep this for later...this gel is pure gold"

Hermione had finished taking down the notes. She took her Mugwort leaves and put them in the mortar. She started to grind them so that would be crushed enough to fit in her shoe. Certainly one of the more interesting Herbology classes she thought.

Gold needed to hurry up! The sixth year had not been in her element lately, and she hoped that the next week would see her more cheerful, and more attentive. Not that was not in a pleasant mood, these days. But her usual concentration had lacked, for some reason.
She had no tangible explanation, either.
But, it was time to get a move on, and start milking her aloe-vera. God knew she would be left behind, if she didn't get a start already. The sixth year shook her head, and directed her wan on either side of a leaf. It was a matter of a simple "Diffindo," then, as she trimmed off the edges. They were sort of pokey-pokey, what with smallish spines and everything, but she could handle that. Herbology was an okay subject, for her.
One that she was sure she would scrape by with an E, in her NEWT's. An O, if she tried harder. But an E, she could manage.
Cutting vertically lengthwise, through the very middle of the leaf, Gold neatly separated it into two pieces. She could see how the gel was encased, now. Poor, poor leaf. Gold wanted to pet the poor dear.
But she had an aloe-vera to milk. She eyed the leaf for a bit, and then proceeded to collect an amount of the thick, clear, gel-like substance. It was rather sticky, in a sense, but at least she was not going to get hurt by it, or something of that sort. Gold bottled it up, into a vial, setting it aside for future use. Now, what was next on the agenda?
Mugwort!
Gold headed to the front, grabbed a few leaves as they had been instructed, and then proceeded to pick up a mortar-and-pestle. She heard a younger Hufflepuff ask why the instrument was named, as it was, and raised a hand. "Professor?" She said, very timidly. "I -" She was hopefully not speaking out of turn, but her Latina roots seemed to be forcing her, to speak up. "I believe the Mortarium was an old Roman kitchen vessel. Conical bowl, with a coarse grain embedded into the internal surface. The word 'pestle' would come from Pestillum. That would roughly be Latin for 'pounder' or pounding. I think -- that's why the tool is named as it is, sir," she finished, politely but almost shyly. It had once been completely unlike Gold to be shy, but she had changed, since the end of last term. She could be much less cheerful than she once used to be, often much more thoughtful, and could sometimes suddenly become very under-confident or extremely shy.
Which was exactly why, to hide the fact that she looked all timid, the sixth year hurried to crush the leaves she had grabbed. Maybe Professor!Herbology wouldn't eat her, then.
"Those are all very good answers," the Professor beamed, proud of their Herbology knowledge. The last professor must've taught them well. "Should any of you get sore feet, you'll be up and about in no time at all. The herb I was thinking of though, is Mugwort."

Walking over to the cupboard, Kay pulled out a mortar and pestle. She walked over to the Mugwort plant and took and few of its leaves. *thank you* Her Mum had always told her to say thank you when taking something. She hoped the others hadn't heard her. But plants were in important and little magical things lived on them. Putting the leaves in to the mortar and crushed them up. Looking at them she wondered if they were good enough. "Professor is this good enough or should I continue to crush them?" Kay asked before taking them out of the maotar.
Mischief managed ♥ / / Breath, smile and let it go.
Pam had been listening to the lesson,as well as 'milking' the aloe vera. That was pretty cool and she had placed the aloe vera into a small container. She wasn't sure what she was going to do with it but she liked collecting things. The lesson was pretty interesting so far. She observed the students around her for awhile before walking over to the store cupboard and plucking a few leaves from the Mugwort plant. She then took a mortar and pestle too. She put the leaves into the mortar and crushed them up using the pestle, but not until they were too mushy. That would be gross. She looked around but didn't see anybody placing the crushed up leaves into their shoes and she decided not to...yet. She wasn't sure if she was going to. It seemed pretty gross but at the same time, exciting.

Or be angry with her.
Oh. Well that was unexpected. Unexpected but quite helpful. Sage listened carefully as the Gryffindor began to explain the origins of the mortar and pestle and therefore how it came to get its name. It was interesting!
And he hoped the younger boy that had questioned the subject had heard.
"Y'hear that, Simon?" Sage asked, looking towards the young boy. "This young lady knows why a mortar and pestle are called a mortar and pestle!" With a grin, the Professor turned back to the girl. "Take a point for Gryffindor.. for.. helping me out." Yes, because now he wouldn't have to research himself.

"Professor is this good enough or should I continue to crush them?" Kay asked before taking them out of the maotar.
"I think that looks just about perfect," the Professor smiled softly, inspecting the girl's mushing skills and nodding in approval. "I bet your feet would feel loads better if you put those in your shoes."
No one seemed to want to though. And he bet they wouldn't want to do what he had planned next either.
"While you're finishing up with your mugwort," Sage called to the class, "can anyone identify this particular herb?" He held it up to show them.

Ooooh. She knew that that herb was! Thank goodness for her sneaking down into the kitchens of her house. She looked up at the professor from her place next to Gold. She actually felt clever for once. "Isn't that Dill Sir?" Because it would be a little embarrasing if it wasn't right? After speaking she returned to her crushing because she was cool like that
