"I didn't cause them harm, Casey." She said looking at them. "Do you really think I would risk" my job "student's lives? Do you think I don't know what I was doing?" She took a sigh. "The flame hit the student on a limb, it burned their skin but did not inflict the pain associated with the burn. We were brewing a burn healing unction. And now, they are completely healed. Not even a scratch." She said looking at him.

"No, my natural assumption would be that you would not injure the students on purpose," Tate mused. "I would like to believe that the staff I hired cared deeply and personally for each and every student in their class, and I will extend that belief to you until you prove otherwise." She must like the children or she wouldn't be here. It didn't pay enough to put up with it otherwise.

"The thing about the students at Hogwarts, that may be different from students you have handled in the past, is that they've been through quite a trauma. They were forced to fight each other. They were forced to be victims, and they were unable to act. So... I suppose if they step into the gap and defend each other, it's a reaction to that."

"Ahh, I see," she said steepling her fingers, "so I guess it's alright then for a student who just walked into a class, and didn't bother knowing what was going on from the beginning, to attack a professor at the school." She said sarcastically. "Casey, why are you making excuses for them? I was not aware that prefects are exempt from the rules."

Sidney grabs her plate with both hands and hugs the wall when Professor Lefay storms by. Boy she moves fast. I thought the students would get here first to complain. Balancing her cup cakes in her left hand, Sidney pats her pockets with her right. Darn, I left my Extendable Ears in my trunk. No bother, I already have a blow by blow as to what happened in class. Still it would be nice to hear what's being said. Professor Lefay is already a force to be reckoned with. Funny, I feel sorry for Headmaster Tate. I know he can handle himself in a fight, but.... Oh well, he may just be a portrait on the wall by the time Lefay gets finished with him. Sidney decides to have a cupcake while she waits.

He cocked his head to the side and considered her question. It was loaded with defensiveness and anger, and he hadn't earned those yet. Not to say he wasn't working his way there, but... he didn't deserve it yet.

She felt guilty. Clearly. She already knew she had done wrong. Sigh. He missed his soldiers and the ability to yell at people and the lack of emotional females and children. Give him fieldwork any day.

"I believe what we're actually doing is trying to fit pieces together to understand why three very good students would step over a clearly defined line like that. I'm giving us both some perspective. And you... don't get to behave like a teenager just because you're working with some. So please don't jump all over me while I"m being reasonable. Wait until I'm unreasonable."

"Excuse me?" She said looking at him in disbelief. She smiled and calmly said "The head girl, attacks me in my class, and you call me a teenager." She stood up and said "What you are doing finding a reason why it was alright for the prefects to behave the way they have, and try to convince me of it. I personally am of the opinion that rules should be followed, no matter what the reason. And for a student that has a badge and other students look up to..." she stopped, swallowed and smiled again. "What is it you would like me to do?" She asked.

"No, Hecate," Tate put his hands to his head and massaged vigorously. "Attacking a professor is reprehensible, obviously. But as I said... they are very good kids. I'm trying to put what they did into the greater picture to understand why it happened. To keep it from happening again. To decide if they can retain their positions. I'm sorry if you feel you're being scolded, but I'm not here to make friends. I'm here for my students."

Hmph. "As are you. So a little compassion and a little less worry about what this means for you at the moment."

She sat back down. "I never expected to be friends, Tate. I did expect some support, certainly not to be, as you so put it, scolded. But yes, less about me, and more about being compassionate. Do go on."

"I have owled Vindictus, and I'm waiting for Truebridge to respond to a previous owl... but I would like to have them assist me doling out the punishment. I merely came to inform you, I would have 3 prefects in detention, and the reason why." She said looking at him.

"I think... you'll have some trouble with them," Tate sort of... oh, this was bad. He was actually looking forward to the explosion-that-was-Max. And Truebridge wouldn't hit her... he rubbed his face absently. But the man had a cutting tongue.

He was looking forward to it. He'd like to be a fly on the wall.

"They're both particularly voracious about how students are treated in the classroom. Perhaps I should speak to them on your behalf."

"Perhaps I will speak to them myself." She said and stood. "You'll find I'm also very voracious." Not to mention vicious... "No Offense." She told him, "Now if you'll excuse me, I have five detentions to plan..." She said and her smile slowly faded.

He spread his hands. "Of course. And I will speak with the prefects about the... expectations for their behavior and the appropriate means to express disapproval or respect in regards to a professor." And he would bake them cookies themselves and serve them bloody tea if they needed it.

One of Sidney's cupcakes fell to the floor when Professor Lefay stormed pass her. Once again Sidney hugged the wall for dear life. What is it with that woman? I swear my name is on the top of her hit list. Wonder what I did to deserve that honor. Sidney stands there holding her cupcakes afraid to move until Tate tells her what to do.

Sidney thought the summer might mellow Headmaster Tates. Unfortunately that hasn't been the case. As usual, he is very busy. She walks into the office and takes a seat at his desk. She places her plate of cupcakes on an available spot. "Professor Lefay doesn't burn students. She gives them a nasty sunburn." Sidney decides to get right to the point since Tate is very busy as usual. "Part of my homework assignment for charms is sharing the cupcakes with student and members of the staff. I thought you might like some Red Velvet Cake Cupcakes. You don't need to check them for poison or other things. I only put Fever Fudge in my chocolate cupcakes. They're pretty good if I say so myself."

Tate eyed the cupcakes with interest before pointing at one of the red velvet ones. "Cream cheese icing?" Because was it really red velvet if it wasn't cream cheese?

Marlowe was a good kid, although she was blunt and over-eager. And it was possible she poisoned her cupcakes, something he hadn't even considered until she brought it up.

"How about I take one and eat it later?" He might take a page out of Lainey's book and try the food on the house elves first.

Sidney smiles. "Of course they have cream chesse icing. Take the whole plate. I have a dozen of them to get rid of. I was teasing about the poison. I'm afraid I'm no good at brewing them, and if I was so insane as to poison an International Auror, I wouldn't warn him ahead of time." Sidney takes one of the cupcakes and peels the paper off. She takes a bite.

"I am most assuredly, not an Auror," Tate said vehemently. He thankfully never had been and had no intention of being one. His calling was higher. Prouder.

He watched her chew dispassionately. "What can I do for you, Miss Marlowe?"

Touchy about being an auror, I'll have to remember to tell Uncle Connor that the next time I write him. "I just wanted to apologize for not picking my camera up last term. Seem everytime I came to your office, you weren't here. I also wanted to thank you for doing such a good job of capturing the dark wizard, and that I'm glad you aren't now a portrait on the wall." Sidney finishes her cupcake. She'd better stop eating these things or she's going to be sick.

"Bad timing, I suppose," he pulled open his desk drawer and removed the camera before sending it across the desk. "Most of my work is done in here, though, so you must have chosen moments when I was sleeping or fighting for my life. But I do appreciate the sentiment, and I'm also quite pleased to not be dead."

Sidney catches her camera. "I was busy myself when you were fighting for your life trying to stay out of the way. I've signed up for dueling classes with Professor Truebridge. You aren't expecting anymore trouble this term, are you?" Sidney looks over at the strange mirror on the wall. It's prefectly clear. She doesn't know what that means, but for some reason, it makes her feel better knowing it's empty.

"You never plan for trouble, or else you always do... so that it doesn't surprise you," Tate mused. He picked up a cupcake, turned it around, and set it down. Not yet.

"Professor Truebridge is an excellent dueler. I think you'll learn quite a bit."
