Noir listened very carefully to her Professor..she's First Year student she wasn't here three or four terms ago she didn't know the answer for the question so she decided to write down notes the important things that Professor Truebridge said..

Oooh! Oooh! Wesley knew this because she was a first year three terms ago!

Bending over in her seat, the Hufflepuff began to rummage through her bag. Transfiguration...Transfiguration...Transfig-AHA! Pulling out a stack of parchment, she thumbed through it until she found the sheets with the right dates. For a minute she didn't read, she just wrinkled her down-turned nose and thought about how bad her handwriting used to be. But then the teenager remembered where she was and what she was supposed to be doing.

There was stuff about vanishing and stuff about animals and stuff about unvanishing and stuff about...wait. No. That was everything.

No shield spells. Vanishing people could be defensive, but it wasn't a shield. And then transfiguring - unless!

With an image of a scorpion-skinned Cela in her mind, Wesley raised her hand high, "Professor; you could transfigure your skin into a harder kind of animal skin by saying 'Bestiar Skin!' and thinking of some kind of animal with hard skin. Like a scorpion or a....armadillo! It'd be like a full body shield!"

Oh boy! She needed to drink water more often. All this hydration was making her smart.

Lesson 1, Part 2

Defensive spells:
> Protego
> Expelliarmus
> Expecto Patronum
> Finite
> Incarcerous

Elvedina copied the spells down without raising her hand. She hadn't even known about magic three or four terms ago, let alone what kind of magic was taught. While she waited for the next instruction, she looked at the list of spells and imagined how exciting it would be to be able to perform any one of them.

Victoria wrote down her notes and looked back up to listen to the professor once more.

Surely someone knew what he spoke of. It was particularly useful when conjuring arrows...

Melissa nodded and made a mental note of the defensive spells.

Protego, okay that was alright she had practised the spell a couple of times too. Seening as she wasn't even here three terms ago she couldn't answer it but she could just listen.

PadfootAndTheWolf 05-15-2010 06:00 PM

Ooh Defensive spells?! That meant fun in Chris's book. The Gryffindor stood close to where the Professor was and listened to what he was speaking about, copying down the spells that the other students had listed. They had said all of the ones he could think of at the moment; so he just waited to get started.

Lilly94 05-15-2010 06:11 PM

Justin listened to the professor and everyone else. "Is the Patronus Charm a defensive spell?" he asked hoping that was correct. He was unsure but he thought that was a defensive spell. It defended people against dementors didn't it? He wrote down all of the other spells the other student's had said.

Alice took down notes quickly, she had no idea what the professor was talking about from three terms ago because just a few months ago she had been in another country. Alice waited to see if there was anything else she should worry about writing down.

BluePhyre 05-15-2010 06:12 PM

Sapphyre jotted down a few notes of all that the other students and Professor Truebridge had said and grasped her wand, biting her lip as she thought about more hands-on work. Shooting spells was one thing, but she couldn't see when spells flew at her. It would be nearly impossible to use Protego, wouldn't it? She had managed to put one up last year, which meant she definitely could this year, but timing? Maybe she just ought to sit out...

miss.malfoy.211 05-15-2010 06:16 PM

Kenna copied the notes. Defense was fun, it could be like, her main class. That would be fun. Being awesome and whipping out spells whenever someone threatened her. Protego might be tricky though, first actually doing it, and then doing it at the right moment. She was sure she cold manage though.

Roselyn 05-15-2010 06:36 PM

Hmm, her uncle mentioned a few shield spells during their summer vacation trip. Which was also useful when running away from those...things. Some spells she never even heard of and others, which were like Protego. However, they had weird names so she couldn't quite remember them.

Leaning forward so she was able to put her elbows on her knees, and hold her head up with her palms, she looked around, waiting to see if anyone was going to say the spell. No one? No, there was that one kid, who pretty much didn't know the answer either. Maybe she could just start naming off stuff. Mwaha!

"Isn't there one that like, starts with a B? Or...no. S? ...I?" Pfft, she couldn't remember. There was too much going on to really absorb information during the summer.

Add1cted 05-15-2010 06:54 PM

"Professor, is it true that the Killing curse can't be shielded against? It says so in this book" he asked the professor, making a quick note in his book:

Defensive spells:
- Protego - Shields
- Expelliarmus - Disarm
- Expecto Patronum - conjures patronus.
- Finite - stops spell effects (From DADA book)
- Incarcerous - Ties with ropes.

brave-at-heart-xo 05-15-2010 07:28 PM

Adelyn was already excited about this lesson; defensive spells? So cool! She eagerly scribbled down the notes and prepared for the Professor to give further instructions.

"Yes, thank you Celandine. In fact that particular shield is one we will be touching on today."

"Yes, the Patronus charm. We aren't going to work on that one today, but we will in a future lesson."

"Right, Evan. Expelliarmus is a defensive spell."

"Yes the Protego variatons are defensive spells. Good Dillon and Santi."

"Yes Finite Incantatem and Finite can be used defensively. Impervius is in some ways, if one is trying to avoid liquid based spells in particular."

"Good. Incarcerous is certainly useful defensively." Truebridge agreed.

"Ah yes. We have touched on this before. Offensive spells can be used defensively and vice versa. Thank you both for that." He had left it open for those answers to be given intentionally.

"But we are going to work specifically on shielding today. Protego, The glass to sand shield Celandine mentioned plus two others. I believe one of the others has been on the transfiguration curriculum in the past... perhaps... three or four terms ago?" Truebridge hinted.

Surely someone knew what he spoke of. It was particularly useful when conjuring arrows...

Sidney remembers reading about the Glass to Sand spell in volume 5 of The Life of Harry Potter. It's used when shards of glass are flying towards you. The shield turns them to sand a somewhat limited use charm, but you never know when someone might hurl glass at you. The arrow charm, I've read about that somewhere... Sidney takes our her transfiguration textbook and looks up arrow charms. Oh yeah, the Arrow charm. Sidney raises her hand. "The Arrow Charm shoots arrows out of the end of your wand. The Incantation is Shrowan, and the wand movement is a jabbing movement. I would call that a very sneaky defensive charm, sir. Did you use it last term in the fifth floor bathroom?"

CruppieMom89 05-15-2010 09:06 PM

Cadence took notes as they discussed all the different defensive spells. Two others. She tried to think of what else it could possibly be. Right when she remembered the arrow spell, someone else thought of it. Raising her hand, though, she figured she would try to guess the remaining one. "Professor, is it Levicorpus? Or no... that would be an offensive spell, wouldn't it? Oo! What about a Disillusionment Charm?!" she asked in an excited voice. Hiding yourself... that was definitely defensive, right? Learning to do a Disillusionment Charm would be awesome!

Felixir 05-15-2010 10:23 PM

This class... was pure proof that Jake was going to totally fail his OWLs.

All these spells, and Jake had mastered about... none of them. Sure, he had a few charms and other stuff down... but these? Grrrr. It wasn't until that really annoying stalker kid, Sidney, mentioned a spell... to do with arrows. Shrowan.

Jake remembered it. He had been a first year when they were taught it... and he was, like, able to do it. He REMEMBERED!

Still, Jake didn't so much as look at the young girl to show that it had given him any hope. No emotions. Just stoicness.

Yep.

And he leaned forwards to listen closer to Truebridge, since he wasn't making notes.

Jake relied on his memory; all the more reason to want to keep from blacking out this term.

Snape631 05-15-2010 11:15 PM

Willow was very interested in learning these defensive spells. She had heard of Protego and Expelliarmus, but never knew of a spell that could turn glass into sand. Willow raised her hand to ask a question "Are there other defensive spells that allow you to turn other offensive objects being used against you into things that wont harm you?"

Mrs. Weasley 05-15-2010 11:20 PM

A shiver goes up and down Sidney's spine like someone had walked over her grave. She doesn't understand why people describe this feeling that way. I'm sitting here in class, so obviously I'm still alive. She looks around and sees Jake Upstead trying a little too hard not to look at her. I really don't understand that guy. Am I not allowed to respond in class if he's around? You've really got to get a grip on yourself. It's not your fault he hates you. I don't think it's my fault. Could I have done something to offend Jake last term and not remember it? Now he's got me turning paranoid over nothing. I really need to speak to Professor Lawson about him. They seem to be close. Lawson should be able to explain Jake's strange behavior to me.

TeafortheSoul 05-16-2010 12:15 AM

Cela loooooked around and then raised her hand again. "Impiriano, sir. Its the blue aura shield spell and it allows you for physical items, such as arrows, or magic to pass from the inside to the outside of the barrier, but doesn't allow them to pass from the outside in." She paused, "You also don't have to hold it steady the whole time. Its not as strong of a shield as Protego, but it stays up and allows you to cast other spells.

Had she been third year? Hummmm. Yes. She'd learnt that in her third year.

James_Potter 05-16-2010 01:53 AM

James sat quietly, scribbling the defensive spells on his roll of parchment with his large peacock feather-quill. Although he was normally somewhat loquacious, he didn't quite feel like talking at the moment. Instead, he remained taciturn and looked around as the other students spoke up. He scratched out a letter he accidentally wrote. He tended to do that a lot.

DADA Lesson 1: Protective Spells
-Protego
-Expelliarmus
-Expecto Patronum
-Finite [?]
-Incarcerous [?]

He scribbled question marks next to the last two spells for Professor Truebridge had yet to confirm them. Yawning quietly, James stretched and turned his head back towards the professor.

BanaBatGirl 05-16-2010 02:15 AM

Uh... say what? Defensive spells, all right, Fletcher made a mental note of those. Protego, in particular, which they would be learning, and... some other spell, apparently?

He was just ready to do some more practical magic.

BearyMay 05-16-2010 03:06 AM

Dianna had a lot of thoughts swirling in her head. She thought about all the defensive spells she knew.

"Let's see... Protego, Expelliarmus and the Patronus Charm." she said to herself. She has also heard of Arania Exumai but was not quite sure if it was a defensive spell.`

leshley 05-16-2010 04:34 AM

Sophia took down notes.

Name of Defensive Spells

1. Protego
2. Expelliarmus
3. Finite

...

Hermione J. Granger 05-16-2010 04:56 AM

Hermione knew all of these defensive spells pretty well, they were pretty basic, and mentioned countless times in the book Defensive Theory For Defense Against The Dark Arts. She wrote them all down anyway as a review and waited for further instructions from the professor.
