"I suggest that you bring to each class materials to take notes, your textbook and your school rune set. How many of you have a personal rune set that you've made yourself? I believe anyone in fifth year or up may have made one with Professor Lupa."
Journal and textbook, Gold already had on her. It was standard material, to bring to any class. For her, that is. She listened to what Professor Shackleton had to say, nevertheless, and raised a hand when the former Arithmancy professor fell silent, after her question.
Herminny was getting her supplies ready when she heard the professor ask a question pertaining to her year and above and remembered the assignment the professor was referring to and frowned a little. That was one of the homework assignemnts she skipped over the previous year and now it actually turned out to be some what important. This was just great.
Alex had her book and things to take notes with but she was a first year so she hadn't made one of the personal rune sets. She wondered how many of the older years had one she waited for the class to begin and for everyone to answer the Professor.
Luna held up her class materials. "I have them Professor," Luna smiled. She placed everything back on her desk. She had her school rune set but she did not make it herself. However, she was still happy to be in the class.
Camille blinked looking around while looking at the professor: listening.
She observed a bit-"at least i`m not the only ohe who`s first year" she commented to herself;preparing the stuff she needed.
she remember before that her older brothers found this subject a bit...*blink*blink* difficult. she sighted grabbing her older brother`s rune set. yes, it wasn`t new but it looked like one; `cause her brother dropped the subject for some reason.
so much of that, she settled and composed herself. "this will be a fascinating subject i know it..." she tried to be optimistic. not really, she blink thinking a bit realistic. i hope not. she tried to smile as she was absent-mindedly doodling at the back page of her new crunchy notebook; patiently waiting for the formal discussion to start.

So Runes was like taking French in muggle school? Ehh. She failed at French so she wasn't so positive about Ancient Runes. Heavens, she looked around the class, espeically at the older students then down at her Runes set, the ones she got from ... what did they call it? Diagon Alley? Sighing she looked back up at the Professor, she was a little comfortable because TY was seated right in front of her. She could hide behind him if she didn't know the answer to any of the questions, she was sure coming.
"There are far fewer students with their own rune sets than I would have expected. I think we will start this term by having everyone make their own sets, but I will have you complete the project as your homework assignment. We will spend this lesson discussing why personalized rune sets are better for casting than pre-manufactured rune sets, as well as discussing the origins of the runes and their history."
Professor Shackleton-Clark stood up from her chair and walked around to the front of her desk, perching on the corner as she so often did when lecturing. "There are three key uses of Ancient Runes throughout history. Anyone know what they might be?"

Ah, so this class was Ancient Runes... right... Fletcher had that textbook (thanks to the random Ravenclaw from the library) but he definitely didn't have a set of Runes. Regardless, he raised his hand and chanced a guess at the professor's question.
"Ancient runes were something of an alphabet for like, old Vikings and stuff, right? They were used before the Latin alphabet was common I believe." Just throwing that out there.

Eeeesh.
They already had a homework assignment and class had just started.
Destiny pulled out her parchment and quill, since it seemed like they were going to need to write things down..a lot of things. Like the answer to the question juuust asked. "They could be used for writing, since each rune stands for a different letter..or something like that." she said raising her hand.
Pfffft. That older boys answer was better than hers.

They had to make another set?
Did she made a set last term? Or the term before? Ugh, she couldn't remember. Best just made a new and prettier one right? Right! "They could be used for...some kind of defense or protection... I think." she said after raising her hand and twirling her quill in her other hand.
At least, that's what she remembered if she remembered correctly. Which, maybe. Maybe not.

Abbi watched the Professor as she moved around her desk, hmmm. Teachers can do that? Okay, OHHH she read about that the other day, she shot her hand straight up, which wasn't like her at all and said, "for linguistic purposes then at some point after for decorations" really people, " and and and.." ehhh she lost what she wanted to say scratched her head and added, "OH! and for magic and divination". Wait.. she slapped her forehead.
Camille blinked hearing her answers were already said. she shrugged a bit, leaves no choice but to guess.....
or maybe not. but what`s wrong in trying?? but..gah.
she was a bit hesitant fighting with her thought.
she lifted her hand."ancient runes is an old way of writing ...[?]" she bit her lip a bit; "or some sort of password you decode it or something??... because each runes stand for something" she sounded a bit questioning at first but later on as if stating a fact. she blinked as she ended; trying to settle her self a bit by playing with her fingers secretly.
Ellie looked around the room. What in the world was a 'runes set'? She sighed. She didn't know the answer to this question, either. This might be the one class she was completely, and she meant completely, unprepared for.
"The three uses of Ancient Runes include as a written language of communication, for divination purposes, and to manifest natural forces via magic. Points to each of who you described at least one of these uses."
Professor Shackleton-Clark began to pace the front of the classroom as she explained, "Prior to the second century BCE, the Nordic and Germanic tribes of Northern Europe used the runes mainly as a magical system of pictographs representing the forces and objects in Nature. They believed they could call upon a specific rune and thereby make a connection with the force that that rune represented. In other words, the runes were mainly used for magical purposes."
Macadrian paused to add, "You may want to take notes on this material, by the way. It is quite important. Without understanding the historical perspective, you will never be able to fully appreciate the Runes."
Resuming her pacing, Professor Shackleton continued, "Does anyone know or would like to guess at what happened around the second century BCE that caused the Nordic and Germanic tribes to use the runes as a written language?"

Josiah wasn't sure about his answer at all, but he figured he'd give it a shot anyway. He put up his hand timidly and said, "Did the tribes maybe come into contact with the Roman world and see that they had a written language and wanted one of their own?"
Alex took notes on everything the Professor was saying, Ancient Runes was truly interesting at the question she raised an eyebrow not knowing the answer. "So Only they knew that they were saying that way no one could take credit for something they did?" She guessed raising her hand

"OK class, I think now is as good a time as any to get started. For those who do not know me, my name is Macadrian Shackleton-Clark and I will be teaching Ancient Runes this term. I was on leave last term, so second and first years won't know me, but those who are third year and up will know that I used to teach Arithmancy here at Hogwarts for many terms.
"As a cursebreaker prior to my stint as an educator, I am more than equipped with the educational background and experience to teach either subject, so do not worry that my background in Ancient Runes will be lacking. I assure you that I will be able to teach you quite effectively, as long as you put in the appropriate amount of effort.

Hm. So by her explanation, Jimbo should know her already. But, considering he only came to Hogwarts last term and she wasn't there, this was the first time he was meeting her. He made a note to himself to remember her name and took out a quill to write down the important things she was saying.
Okay, Jimbo did not have his own rune set. It sounded like it might be kinda boring, all this, but Jimbo was willing to give it a shot. Like always though, he wasn't going to like it, no matter how many times he tried to get himself to.
When she started going through the history of runes Jimbo wrote it all down as he listened. This really was going to put him to sleep. No wonder he never did good in this subject.
When she asked that last question, Jimbo had no clue what the answer could possibly be so he didn't even try guessing. Maybe they didn't have any other means of communication? Maybe they got tired of grunting at each other? Maybe Jimbo is thinking too far back in history?
Anya quickly took out some paper and started taking notes..

Umm...German and Nordic tribes? Not her thing. She decided to listen and take notes for this part, and maybe answer question she knew the answer to later..
Not ever haven taken Ancient Runes, Lysandra didn't know any of the questions that the Professor asked. Instead, she took out her notebook and quill and wrote down what she said about Ancient Runes.

Writing down a few notes in her notebook about what the Professor was saying, she paused for a moment, thinking over the question that was being asked.
"Perhaps the language was passed down from another tribe somewhere else in the world that came across them?" she asked after raising her hand. That stuff happened right? People learned from other people...
