The Snitch

This rune signifiies having a secret, things of a secretive nature, elusiveness, withdrawal, hesitance, vulnerability, being hard to pin down. It also signifies that there can be great rewards for persistence, though the road may be difficult.

The Quaffle

The presence of this rune indicates determination, goal orientation, being a born leader. They can show that great success is in the future.

The Bludger

This rune shows aggressiveness, toughness and resilency. It's presence shows that the road ahead may be tough, but if you hang tough then you can persist and make it through to your goal.

The Beater's Bat

This rune generally has connotations of harshness, insensitity and a hard edge associated with it. It can indicate tendencies to be a bully and show that there might be a need to lighten up. There are positive lessons to be learned from this rune, too. In fact, many leaders have this rune present in their life cycle.

The Hoop

This rune generally indicates openness, and usually shows a giving, caring, sensitive and caring nature. The downside to this rune that there could be a period to watch for when others may try to take advantage.

The Championship Cup

Having this rune present indicates feelings of pride, vanity, fickleness and flirtatiousness. It can appear during times when you have done well and are feeling particularly proud of your accomplishments. The key to this rune is control, not letting things go to your head even though you might have reason to be proud. Others won't like it!

This is a rune which indicates the gift of great vision and foresight, intuitiveness and sometimes genius. It is a good rune to have present in your reading.

1) Orb/Circle: There are a few meanings to this rune. Closure to something that has been going on for awhile. Something is complete like the circle has been completed. It could mean unity, both ends of the line have united to form a complete circle.

2) Candle: It is a light to see your way when there is darkness. The candle burns bright representing a bright future.

3) Fork: This is like a fork in the road, there is more than one path to choose from. Decisions must be made. There is more than one choice available.

4) Arrow: The arrow will point you in the right direction, it will help lead the way.

5) Birds: They represent freedom and flight. If flying you would have the greatest feeling of freedom known to man. The flight part could mean you are running from something, fleeing, trying to get away.

6) Teardrop: A single teardrop could mean you will experience sorrow, saddness or despair.

7) Dark Cloud: You wil run into troubled times. There will be turmoil and darkenss in your future.

8) Heart: You will find love, romance and desire.

9) Sword: You will be involved in a battle. You will be fighting for something you truly desire. You want to put an end to something that has been looming in your past.

10) Cage: You will feel trapped, like there is no way out. You will experience a loss of freedom.

Cardinal Runes





Overview and Use: The Cardinal Runes are so named because they derive from the cardinal directions North, South, East, West and Center. Joining those five are runes representing Creation and Infinity. They are used as a guide to the dominant forces in a given situation that the questioner raises. It doesn't mean that they are the only forces, only that they are most prevalent.

These runes can be used in several ways. The most simple is to name a question and pull a single rune to consider. Additionally, they can be used in small spreads, like the Three Rune Spread. It is important to note that these runes do not predict the future, but rather address the possibilities as things are right now.

ooc: This rune set, particularly the runes for the cardinal directions, was inspired by the meanings and elements associated with the cardinal directions in Celtic and other pagan traditions. The elemental associations with the directions are specific to the Northern hemisphere. However, the rune meanings are conglomerations of various meanings associated either with the direction, the element or the season, and are not in any way representative of a particular tradition. The runes for Creation and Infinity replace the directions of 'above' and 'below' in some of these traditions and are almost entirely of my own creation. The use of these runes is also of my own design (based on other rune work we've done in class) and not indicative of how these elements are worked with in these traditions.

Individual Runes and Meanings:


North – Associated with Earth, the North rune depicts plant life. It is also associated with the season of winter. These associations lend the North rune its meanings which include home, security, fertility, stability, abundance, strength, understanding, teaching, silence, surrender and ends.



East – Associated with Air and Spring, the East rune depicts breeze. These associations lend the East rune its meanings of communication, new beginnings, new growth, intellect, directional movement, freedom and focus.



South – Associated with Fire, the South rune depicts flame. It is also associated with the season of summer. These associations lend the South rune its meanings, which include energy, passion, creativity, will, faith, trust, innocence, courage, transformation, and the ability to both create and destroy.



West – Associated with Water, the West rune depicts waves. It is also associated with the season of autumn. These associations lend the rune its meanings, which include emotional response, flux, friendship, mystery, waning, security and love.



Center – Associated with Spirit, the Center rune depicts that which is at the center of all things. It represents balance, transcendence, inspiration, calm, groundedness/rootedness, and the innermost self.



Creation – Encompassing the cardinal directions of North, South, East, West, and Center, the Creation rune depicts crossed lines for the compass points and the mark of the center all connected by the circle. This rune represents wholeness, interconnectedness, and elemental balance. This rune holds the meanings of all the previous runes, none more predominant than the others. That is what is meant by elemental balance.



Infinity – Representing all that is both within and beyond the present creation, the Infinity rune holds meanings of duality, perfection, cycles, unity, the past, present and future at once, endlessness, and truth.


Notes: It is important to understand that these runes are not mutually exclusive and that they blend, flow, and bleed into one another in some ways. Earth is not fertile without water. The Mask

This rune represents cunning, deceit, and secrecy.

The Game

Life's gains and losses. This rune also refers to choice - or taking a gamble or a risk. An alternate reading: Laughter, humour, and enjoyment.

The Thunderstorm

Emotional turmoil. May also refer to actual weather phenomena, depending on how it is cast and read, or nature.

The Sovereign

Order, structure, meaning. If this rune tumbles upside down, it can be a call for action.

The Dwelling

Safety, comfort, calm. But the twisted strokes beneath the roof can also represent confusion and a feeling of being limited or locked in.

The World

Two vertical strokes, connecting the horizontal lines of earth and sky. This rune represents nature, the seasons, and a witch's duty to respect both.

Human

The meaning of this rune depends very much on how it is cast. The Human rune can refer to the witch herself - or someone she knows, her friends, family or enemies, but perhaps also the force of her mind and magical abilities as the stroke representing the head is longer and more pronounced than the stroke representing the arms.

The Forest

Another rune that can mean nature, but more often, the Forest describes the mind. It can be confused and confusing like a forest, but also full of knowledge and strength like the trees.

The Beast

Tough times. Bad luck. Danger, or even death.

The Tower

The Tower can only mean one thing: Destiny.

Meaning: The Object Rune represents what the Caster is trying to determine their closeness to. It could stand for a person, place, object, creature, etc. The Caster fixes the thought of the Object in their head while throwing the runes. It always lands face-up.

Rune: Unicorn
Symbol: Unicorn
Meaning: Represents safety, goodness, favour, friends, etc.

Sample casting:
Let’s say that, leaving class, I find an earring on the floor and I want to try and return it to its owner. I would specify ‘owner of earring’ in my head and roll the runes.

The following runes land face-up: Caster, Object, North, Circle, Dwelling, and Milestone.

From this I can determine a few things: First of all, the owner is within a mile of me, and the Dwelling rune tells me that they are within the castle. From the position of the North rune, I can see that the person is currently off to my left somewhere, but the Proximal rune is face-down so there’s no point looking for the person.

The lack of either the Quintaped rune or the Unicorn rune means that I probably don’t know this person that well. From the distance between the Caster rune and the Object rune, and because I know the castle layout, I can guess that the owner is probably on the moving staircase right now.

Here’s something though, the Circle rune isn’t next to the Object rune, it’s nudging up against both the Dwelling rune and the Caster rune. Since this is Hogwarts, and students are divided into houses, this means that the earring’s owner is in my own house.

So I should head back to the common room and either spread the word about a missing earring or toss the runes again and do another reading.

My runes are based on muggle symbols. They are all logos that mean things to modern muggles so I thought since the meanings are universal for muggles that maybe there is something to that.

the Windows Rune

This rune means that even though things are looking like they might be simple and easy to do, there are actually far more problems below the surface and if you just go on in there willy nilly, you're going to mess things up and probably corrupt stuff.

the Special K rune

This rune means that you need to lighten up.

the Nike rune

This rune means that you should just do it. Whatever it is.

the Ask rune

this rune encourages you to ask when you don't know the answer to something. It tells you to do the research rather than just assume things.

The disney rune

This rune indicates fairy tale endings and things that are good for everyone. Sometimes though, it might mean that things are a little fake but at least everyone is smiling.
