A disused room next to the potions classroom has been converted into a potions laboratory. There are several large workstations available, complete with stands and burners for standard size 2 cauldrons and plenty of room to work.

Along the walls at the sides of the room are additional stations holding alembics, distillation trains, calcination equipment, Florence flasks, a large jar of clean glass stirring rods, funnels, empty jars and more -- in short, all the equipment a potioneer would need to do his or her work.

Along the back wall of the class are jars and bottles containing a host of standard potions ingredients. Each container is marked clearly with a parchment label bearing the details of its contents (including the date of expiration), written in Professor Kazimeriz's shaky but legible hand. Several of the larger jars house foul-looking ingredients: there is one jar that appears to be filled with pickled toads, another houses what appear to be large eyeballs from some creature in pale blue syrup, and still others seem to contain the visceral organs of animals - rat spleens, newt tails (which are still wriggling in the jar), and whole flobberworms. One jar of some sort of greenish sap is bubbling lazily, and another opaque bottle keeps trembling, clinking against the others.

There is also a large cabinet that has been triple-locked and charmed. Through the unbreakable glass front of the cabinet, you can see vials, jars, bottles of various size, shape and contents. These are the Professor's private stores. You must receive assistance from the professor to access these ingredients, as all the poisons, rare items like unicorn parts and truly dangerous ingredients in the lab -- including dangerous potions such as veritaserum and amortentia-- are housed in this cabinet.

There is a large chalkboard at the front of the classroom near the Professor's sturdy mahogany desk. On it reads this note:

Welcome to the open studio potions lab. This is a supervised independent studies lab, where you may work on personal projects as well as practice potions for your class assessments, OWLS and NEWTS. Please obey the following rules while in this lab:

HAVE A PLAN and WORK AT YOUR OWN LEVEL. Creativity is definitely encouraged in this lab, but please do not just slap ingredients together without knowing the magical theory behind what you are doing. I expect all students to work at their level and if you have questions, please ask the professor. I am always present when this lab is open.
WASTE NOT, WANT NOT. Many of the ingredients in this lab are quite costly. Use them with discretion.
DANGEROUS INGREDIENTS: Many of the more dangerous or expensive ingredients in the lab are in the professor's private stores. On approval, the professor will obtain any of the necessary dangerous ingredients from the storage cabinet for your use.
COMPOUND POTIONS: Only NEWT levels students with prior approval from the professor may work on compound potions in this lab, to ensure that you properly understand the magical theory behind them. If you are unsure if you are attempting a compound potion, please ask. Those who are found to be in violation of this or any rule will be subject to disciplinary action.

ooc notes: Come on in and get creative!

This is an independent lab, NOT potions class... this is the place to let your character practice potions, do labwork, and experiment. For the purposes of the RP please presume that Professor Kazimeriz is in the room at all times unless I specify otherwise. Obviously, I am not really here at all times, but I will be monitoring this thread closely throughout the term and will do my best to respond to posts directed toward Professor Kazimeriz quickly and efficiently.

Please RP responsibly! I'm cool OOC with potions-gone-wrong-RPs (accidentally blowing up cauldrons and such-- stuff happens in a lab!) but just make sure that you are ready to face the consequences IC for any actions you take or mistakes your charrie makes. For instance, if you have a vat of lethal poison explode all over you, it is quite possible your character WILL die, and if you are irresponsible IC, expect Kazimeriz to react accordingly. Please exercise good sense and remember to follow the site rules at all times.

Also, if your character is addressing the professor or needs attention, please put PROFESSOR KAZIMERIZ in your subject line for your post, just so I don't accidentally miss it.

Alessia, who had been crying for some time... burst out with a laugh when she saw the Pryce boy... tiny... "Oh sweetheart," She said patting his head. "I'll stay with you... Just stay on it."

"I'm sssstaying too," Jake frowned at the way Lupa had laughed. He couldn't tell she'd been upset or whatever... he just saw a laugh.

And it wasn't nice.

He wasn't leaving Tibi. The boy sat on a stool and rested his chin in his hands.

Tiberius furrowed his (tiny!) brow at Lupa's laughter. His predicament was funny, was it? Looking over to his friend appreciatively, he mouthed a silent 'thanks.'

Meticulously, and perhaps a bit angrily, Tiberius finished cutting the the fluxweed and measured and separated it into the four piles. Dropping the first pile into the potion, he picked up his stirring rod and gave one counter-clockwise turn. Adding the second pile, he did the same. He alternated piles and stirs until that step was complete.

Tracing his finger down the page, he nodded as he left the cauldron to simmer. Now, mortar and pestal. Looking up, he saw it... out of reach. Once again, Tiberius pushed himself up so that he was standing on the stool and leaning on the counter and stretched to reach the bowl. Pulling, he was aware that it did not budge. Shoulders slumping in resignation, Tiberius considered a moment. Lifting one foot off the stool, he put his knee on the work surface. And then the other.

If the mortar and pestal wasn't coming to him, he was going to it. Knee-walking across the surface, careful not to knock anything over, Tiberius sat on his feet. Reaching and grabbing four colorful butterfly wings, he laid them on the bottom. Using both hands, Tiberius unceremoniously smashed the wings repeatedly, strain apparent on his face.

Looking at the cauldron, he pondered how to get the crushed wings into it. He couldn't just tip it over the top. Finally, he stuck one hand in the container and placed the other near the lip, scooping the wing dust out and into his palm. And then he leaned over and dumped it in the cauldron. He did this several time, his hand too tiny to hold it all at once.

Once that was done, Tiberius scooted over to the cauldron, still sitting on the table, and did his 10 alternating stirs, his arm growing more and more fatigued.

Resting back, he waited for it to boil.

Tiberius looked up from the potion to consider Professor Lupa. Had she... gone mad? Or was she laughing at him again? He was sure he looked ridiculous, so maybe it was him.

And that made him sad. Frowning, he looked away, staring intently at the cauldron as it... didn't boil. And didn't boil.

The color was turning, growing closer to the proper emerald green, but not bubbling. Tiberius stared at it some more. And then some more. Willing it to boil. He need to finish and get out of here.

So people would stop laughing at him.

Looking up at Lupa, he frowned again, but was distracted by a very faint pop. Looking down, the cauldron was beginning to bubble and boil. And it was a brilliatn emerald green.

Grin spreading, Tiberius grabbed a spoon and scooped out some flobberworm mucus. Holding it for a moment, he took a deep breath and plunged it into the cauldron, stirring vigorously. For the entire two minutes, Tiberius whirled that spoon around the cauldron, never taking his eyes off of it.

And when it was done... his arm felt as if it might fall off.

Sitting back, he lowered the heat to allow it to simmer.

Looking back up at the professor, but not necessarily addressing her, he simply said, "I have to wait a half hour."

Immediately, as Lupa burst out laughing again, Jake sprang up, scooting his stool back. This whole situation, the big battle and stuff, had really put him on edge. Even as his heart raced with anger, his arm twitched and his slinged elbow throbbed in pain.

"Ppplease sssstop laughing," he said emotionlessly, trying to stay polite and calm.

Breathe iiiiiin... and ouuutttt.

"I'm not laughing AT him..." She said trying to compose herself... She unwrapped a blood pop and popped it into her mouth and then looked at the other two... "Uhmmm... I have a couple of peppermint frogs..." She said... she wasn't going to give them blood pops.

"Ssssugar…" the boy murmured, shaking his head and sitting back down. "Cccan I hhhhave one of thuhh-those?" he asked, pointing at the lollipop in Lupa's mouth. It might have had sugar too… but meh.

Tiberius shook his head. "No thanks." Not in the mood for sweets, nope nope. Tiberius stared at the potion, and then up at the clock, then back down at the potion.

The color was turning. And it was getting thicker!! Tiberius bounced nervously. he woudl be fixed soon. FIXED!.

At the end of 30 minutes, Tiberius put out the flame under the cauldron and chewed on his lip. It had to cool. Or did it? Ignoring everyone around him, he stuck a spoon in and scooped out some. Maybe only the part he drank needed to be cool? He blew on the spoonful, willing it to cool enough to drink.

Holding the spoon in the air for a few minutes, Tiberius grew impatient and finally just stuck it in his mouth. The potion was thick and slimy going down. But it worked!

Tiberius began to grow back to his normal size, which proved problematic as he was sitting on the table, and promptly send several vials crashing to the floor.

"OH!" Tiberius was startled at his voice, returned to normal. Grabbing his wand, his pointed it at the mess and muttered, "Tergeo."

Sliding off the table, he turned to Professor Lupa and grinned, embarassed. "I guess I'll.. clean up now."

But first.. Tiberius spooned out a sample of the potion into a surviving vial, labeling it in case Professor Kazimeriz had wanted it. There.

Now, to clean.
