Default Potions Laboratory

A disused room next to the potions classroom has been converted into a potions laboratory. There are several large workstations available, complete with stands and burners for standard size 2 cauldrons and plenty of room to work.

Along the walls at the sides of the room are additional stations holding alembics, distillation trains, calcination equipment, Florence flasks, a large jar of clean glass stirring rods, funnels, empty jars and more -- in short, all the equipment a potioneer would need to do his or her work.

Along the back wall of the class are jars and bottles containing a host of standard potions ingredients. Each container is marked clearly with a parchment label bearing the details of its contents (including the date of expiration), written in Professor Kazimeriz's shaky but legible hand. Several of the larger jars house foul-looking ingredients: there is one jar that appears to be filled with pickled toads, another houses what appear to be large eyeballs from some creature in pale blue syrup, and still others seem to contain the visceral organs of animals - rat spleens, newt tails (which are still wriggling in the jar), and whole flobberworms. One jar of some sort of greenish sap is bubbling lazily, and another opaque bottle keeps trembling, clinking against the others.

There is also a large cabinet that has been triple-locked and charmed. Through the unbreakable glass front of the cabinet, you can see vials, jars, bottles of various size, shape and contents. These are the Professor's private stores. You must receive assistance from the professor to access these ingredients, as all the poisons, rare items like unicorn parts and truly dangerous ingredients in the lab -- including dangerous potions such as veritaserum and amortentia-- are housed in this cabinet.

There is a large chalkboard at the front of the classroom near the Professor's sturdy mahogany desk. On it reads this note:

Welcome to the open studio potions lab. This is a supervised independent studies lab, where you may work on personal projects as well as practice potions for your class assessments, OWLS and NEWTS. Please obey the following rules while in this lab:
  • SAFETY FIRST. Practice common sense and good safety practices at all times while in this lab. Remember that other potions are being brewed around you and exercise caution at all times.
  • WHEN IN DOUBT, AS: If you have any question in your mind about the safety or sanity of what you are planning, please bring your intended potion plan to the professor for assstance. The professor reserves the right to end any experiment at his discretion, especially if it is unsafe or irresponsible.
  • CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF. The house elves are not your personal slaves, and it is neither their responsibility nor mine to clean up after you. If you fail to clean up your workstation on departure, you will receive a most unpleasant detention.
  • HAVE A PLAN and WORK AT YOUR OWN LEVEL. Creativity is definitely encouraged in this lab, but please do not just slap ingredients together without knowing the magical theory behind what you are doing. I expect all students to work at their level and if you have questions, please ask the professor. I am always present when this lab is open.
  • WASTE NOT, WANT NOT. Many of the ingredients in this lab are quite costly. Use them with discretion.
  • DANGEROUS INGREDIENTS: Many of the more dangerous or expensive ingredients in the lab are in the professor's private stores. On approval, the professor will obtain any of the necessary dangerous ingredients from the storage cabinet for your use.
  • COMPOUND POTIONS: Only NEWT levels students with prior approval from the professor may work on compound potions in this lab, to ensure that you properly understand the magical theory behind them. If you are unsure if you are attempting a compound potion, please ask. Those who are found to be in violation of this or any rule will be subject to disciplinary action.
ooc notes: Come on in and get creative! This is an independent lab, NOT potions class... this is the place to let your character practice potions, do labwork, and experiment. For the purposes of the RP please presume that Professor Kazimeriz is in the room at all times unless I specify otherwise. Obviously, I am not really here at all times, but I will be monitoring this thread closely throughout the term and will do my best to respond to posts directed toward Professor Kazimeriz quickly and efficiently.

Please RP responsibly! I'm cool OOC with potions-gone-wrong-RPs (accidentally blowing up cauldrons and such-- stuff happens in a lab!) but just make sure that you are ready to face the consequences IC for any actions you take or mistakes your charrie makes. For instance, if you have a vat of lethal poison explode all over you, it is quite possible your character WILL die, and if you are irresponsible IC, expect Kazimeriz to react accordingly. Please exercise good sense and remember to follow the site rules at all times.

Also, if your character is addressing the professor or needs attention, please put PROFESSOR KAZIMERIZ in your subject line for your post, just so I don't accidentally miss it.

If you have any questions, please PM me at XanaSnape. Oh... and most important: HAVE FUN! ~Xana~

Grasping a spoon in his pudgy hand, he spooned out a tiny portion and raised it tentatively to his lips. Tilting his head back and closing his eyes, he tipped the spoon, pouring the contents into this mouth without actually touching the spoon to anything.

Still grasping the spoon, Tibi swallowed and, eyes still clenched shut, he waited.
Kazimeriz eyed Pryce. Nothing happened... At first. And then he began to shrink.

"Ah, look at that. You've successfully brewed the potion!" Kazimeriz smirked. There was something unsavory about the way the man looked at Pryce... as though he was just waiting for the inevitable.

Ah, yes... and then it started. The boy started to shrink more and more rapidly and turned neon green! Tinier and tinier, as though he'd brewed not just any old shrinking solution but Alice's Drink Me potion... his clothes puddled about as he shrank further... and further... stopping only when he reached the size of an average toddler.

"Oh, dear, was it difficult to get the fine details of the potion done, all swollen? What a pity. I suppose now you'll have to brew a Growing Solution. Books are in the back... the heavy tome, I do hope you can manage it." Smirk smirk smirkety-smirk.

It was an odd question, but plants are the next complicated thing to animals and Matheu wasn't going there! "Here is what I've come up with." He passed his notes to the professor.

ooc: The chemistry is just cut and paste gibberish.
Kazimeriz raised an eyebrow, looking over the notes, and looked at the boy with scorn. "I know a great deal about metamagi. But if you are looking to apply muggle scientific notions such as DNA and chemistry in this lab, I am afraid you are at the wrong school. We teach potions and magic here. What sort of metamorphasis are you trying to achieve?" Plants? Perhaps the boy thought was in the herbology garden. Although... hmmm. He waited to hear the boy's hypothesis.

"Of course-- you will find the ingredients in the shelves, and the basic potion is listed in the encyclopedia of potions at the back of the room. There are several variations in the book, you may use the formula that you find most suits your skill level. Follow the shrunken student; it's next to the thick book he has to use." Kazimeriz smiled at the girl.

Water spewed from his wand and hit the bowl, turning to chunks of ice before it hit the porcelain bowl. "Now, you try it."

Kazimeriz looked at Pryce's work. "Very good, Pryce. It seems to be going quite well. Of course, the proof of the pudding... is in the tasting." He smirked and gestured to the cauldron. "Go on then... while it's still warm, it's far more palatable that way."

A new student called to him, and he shuffled toward him. "Yes? How may I be of assistance?" the ancient man asked.

"Of course, Miss Woods. As I recall you were rather adept in class the other day. How about a nice Confusing Concoction? The ingredients are simple, the trick is to really mix it up well the ENTIRE time while brewing... I think it should be right about your speed." Kazimeriz smiled kindly to the young girl.

"Very good, dear. Please leave your sample on my desk and I shall review --- oh, you have, very good. Did you properly cure your cauldron?"
"Properly cure my cauldron?" Sidney is sure she looks like Professor Kazimeriz just gave a seer reading. "I don't know sir. I'm not sure how to cure a cauldron." Sidney hopes the Professor does not try the potion on any living creatures. She didn't know she should cure her cauldron before she started brewing. "My mom always just brews the potion. I guess her cauldron was already cured." Ignorance isn't going to get me anyway with Professor Kazimeriz. Sidney turns and notices Tiberius shrinking down to a toddler. Why do I feel like I'm going to be next?

Nina turned and saw the shrunken student. Tibi! Freaky!

She walked over to get the indicated book. She looked up the formula and carried the open book to her work station. Then went back to get the ingredients listed,
Quote:
sneezewort
scurvy-grass
lovage
flobberworm mucus
jobberknoll feathers

Then she put some water in her cauldron like in class, set a flame upon it, and waited for it to boil.

"Ah, I see. Well, then, you shall be taught. Curing a cauldron keeps the inner surface workable and free of impurities, and keeps the cauldron alloys strong and less prone to cracking or flaking. Once your cauldron is thoroughly cleaned, you must inspect it, dry it completely, and then put it over a low flame AFTER rubbing the insides completely -- do not miss a speck! -- with a curing salve. I find any standard Cure-All does the trick nicely, though the Mrs. Scowers Cauldron Cure All is a particularly good product as well. Once you see the steam stop rising, you will now the cure-all has absorbed thoroughly and your cauldron may cool naturally to room temperature and be safe to store." Kazimeriz gestured to a shelf laden with cleaning products. "Go on, now... we learn best by doing."

"Very good, but be sure to watch the stages carefully- as the potion reaches each stage of creation, it will rapidly change color- make sure you get the ingredients ready now so you can brew rapidly and not spoil your potion by chopping things at last moment." Kazimeriz nodded encouragingly to the girl.

It burned. Oh it burned. But not like when you drink too-hot cocoa. No, this was a tingle much like heartburn, but nearly immediate, searing through his chest as he swallowed.

He tried to imagine what could be less palatable than this, given Kazi's comment.

He could feel it working. He wriggled his fingers. He rolled his tongue. The swelling was going down! Excited, Tiberius opened his eyes and was shocked, no, appalled, to find that he was looking at the underside of his workstation. He was extra tiny.

Swinging around to look at Kazimeriz as the man taunted him, a look of hurt crossed his face. "You... you told me to drink it." What came out of his mouth was a high pitched squeak, the shrinking obviously having tightened up his vocal cords. Now he was tiny AND sounded like a chipmunk.

Realizing that it was no good appealing to the man, Tiberius turned around and walked to the back of the lab. It certainly seemed a longer trek than before, his tiny legs striding not nearly as far. As he stared at the book, at once too high to reach, and too big for his small hands, Tiberius was once again in a situation where brewing would be difficult. Maybe his next mess-up would turn him purple or something.

Sighing, Tibi stared up at the book, trying to decide what to do.

Sidney breathes a sigh of relief. That doesn't sound too difficult. Of course I will be dealing with an open flame. Aways the chance I could singe the ceiling or fill the dungeon with smoke. Stop thinking like that. If you think you are going to be failure, you will be a failure. "Sir, about Tiberius, I know he's being punished, but could I help him get the book to his station? I mean... He can't even use his wand the way he is now."

"Okay" Nina nodded.

She looked down at how to prepare the ingredients, and began.

Quote:
3/4 oz. Powdered sneezewort
2 oz. Finely chopped scurvy-grass
4 Whole lovage
1 oz. Flobberworm Mucus
6 Halved jobberknoll feathers
So the sneezewort was already powdered, so that's done. Nina ran her finger along the page as she went. Seeing the scurvy grass, she took out her knife from her potions kit, and began finely chopping the plant.

A few minutes later, she was scanning her book again. Halved jobberknoll feathers. She took 6 feathers and cut them exactly in half.

She re-read the instructions and made sure she was finished prepping.

SPOILER!!: Professor Kazimeriz

He glanced again at the potion; it was a simple one, and so there was no reason she could not succeed. "Do be careful to mash the fungus thoroughly for best effect and stir thoroughly after the bat tongue; the more vigorously you stir it during that last step, the more potent your potion will be." He tipped her a grandfatherly wink and moved on to assist the next student.

Ivory positively beamed at Professor Kazimeriz before spinning on one foot and almost skipping back to her workstation....because of course young ladies didn't run.

Pushing her robes back to her elbows, she rubbed her hands together excitedly.

First things first, she took out her brand spanking new journal and wrote her name at the top of the page. Tilting her head this way and that to admire her handiwork, she then set it aside and began unpacking her equipment.
'Document Everything' The words echoed in her mind and she dipped her quill into the ink bottle. Everything? Like which equipment she unpacked first? How many times she breathed on her cauldron?

A little crease developed between her eyebrows as she glared down at her journal.

After a moment’s concentration, she wrote out her first bullet her tongue between her teeth

Propping up her book, she placed her bookmarker right on the page of the Aging Potion and looked at her first step, reading it quietly out loud to herself
"Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully."

Knowing she would never remember all the ingredients, she wrote them all carefully down in her journal and hopped down from the stool heading to the storage as she pulled on her graphorn and manticore gloves.

Once at the Potions cupboard, she browsed through the items which were fortunately organized alphabetically.

First on the list, Red Wine. Hmm, grabbing the dark ruby bottle from the W’s where it was right next to ‘Wine, White’, she stared at it curiously. She’d tasted wine before of course but never more than a sip. Uncorking it for a second, she lifted it up and took a sniff. It smelled strong and grown up…no wonder it was in an Aging Potion. Could someone get drunk from it? How much would one have to drink?

Pondering these questions, she moved on to the next ingredient. ‘Prune Juice.’

Smiling as she set that one aside, since the reason for its use was quite obvious in her opinion, she browsed through the storage until she found ‘Fungus, Hairy’, ‘Shell, of a Tortoise,’ and ‘Caterpillar.’
When she finally got the last ingredient of ‘Tongue, of Bat’ (Having absentmindedly first looked in the B’s) she found she had to reread the label a few times just to make sure she had the right jar. Who would’ve thought that bat tongues were so very long, they must’ve been about 150% of the bat’s body. If anything she would’ve thought it was the tongue of a humming bird or something.

Amazed at their anatomy, she scurried over back to her workstation and carefully arranged her items in front of her.

Opening her potions kit and setting her base of phials and beakers within reach, she prepared to measure out her ingredients.

100 mL of Red Wine in one beaker. 10 mL of Prune Juice in a second beaker.
[i]Prune juice…heh/[i]

Using her scales and a piece of weighing paper, she put two one gram weights on one side and slowly measured out two grams of hairy fungus and placed it into her mortar.

Remembering Professor’s Kazimeriz’s suggestion, she used her pestle on the fungus until it was as mashed as it could possibly be, making sure to use a spoon to flip the contents so that all parts would be evenly squashed.
Once it was a fine pulp, she scooped it out carefully into a small bowl and then made sure to wash and scourgify’ her mortar and pestle before she moved on to the next step.

Using a pair of small tongs, she removed a few pieces of tortoise shell from the jar and balanced the scale once more. Using the weighing paper to transfer the pieces from the scales to the mortar, she then proceeded to crushing it.

The process was a long and tedious one that hurt her arm. It required way too much energy and she found that the only way she could do it was by thinking of things that made her angry. Like when you sleep and then wake up without feeling rested…or when you wake up in the morning convinced things have to get better when noooo instead everything goes wrong…oooor artificial orange flavoring!

Growling she pulverized it with more vigor…she hated muggle artificial orange flavoring with the heat of a thousand suns. She loved oranges and orange juice and tangerines but the fact substitute was the absolute worse.
Before she knew it the result was a fine powder which she passed into another small bowl.

Frowning slightly, she placed another weighing paper on the scales and removed the two weights of 1 gram and added a 5 gram on instead.

Scooping out some caterpillars onto the paper, she felt a twinge of sadness. Poor little caterpillars would never become butterflies.

Quickly sending up a quick prayer for their safety and growth in the afterlife, she placed the 5 grams on her cutting board and sliced them up.

Reading for the final ingredient, she used her little tongs again, and got out only one bat tongue still marveling at it’s length.

Grabbing her quill and tipping it into the ink, she wrote down the exact way she’d measured all of her ingredients in her journal.

Leaning closer to her book, she read the next step.
Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form.

Setting up her cauldron in its proper place and she poured the wind and juice into it’s recesses and upholstered her wand. Aiming the fiery tip of her wand at the exact location she wanted the flame, she pronounced the incantation. "Succendo." Immediately a slow flame blossomed beneath the cauldron, almost cradling it.

Pointing her wand at the flame, she pronounced the appropriate incantation. "Tepesco," and lowered it until the flame was just the right size and heat.

Taking her stirrer in hand, she did what she did best…she stirred, in this case clockwise

And stirred.

And stirred.

Pretty soon the mixture had bubbles rising and had turned a dark plum russet color.

As soon as she saw the change in color, she added the hairy fungus while continuing to stir, and she kept right on stirring for the next ten minutes just as the third step required.

This being quite a long time, she resorted to humming to pass the time and then when that got boring she started stirring with her left hand while she wrote out everything she’d just done with her right. She hadn’t been lying about stirring every which way after all.

Glancing at her watch and seeing it was time for the next step, she went back to stirring with her right while her left reached for the powdered tortoise shell and carefully deposited it into the cauldron. The next 8 minutes went by more quickly now that she knew she could stir and write at the same time.
Watching as the contents of the cauldron turned a rich beige color like the freshest cream , she continued stirring as she reached for her wand.
”Tepesco” she pronounced lowering her wand until the fire went out.
Still stirring, she finally added the final ingredients. The caterpillar and the bat tongue.

As soon as the bat tongue hit the surface of the mixture, Ivory grabbed onto the stirrer with both hands and went crazy.

Well not literally just in her stirring.

As energetically and vigorously as she could, she stirred that potion as if her life depended on it.

Again and again and again went her stirrer clockwise around the inside of the cauldron until as it cooled it slowly began to turn a creamy milky white.
The more she stirred the more white it became until finally the potion had cooled completely. Finally stopping her stirring, she placed the stirrer on the side.

Having stirred for the better part of forty minutes in total, her arms felt like jelly and even after she stopped they continued the motion as if she was doing some retro dance move. Hopping off her stool she tried to make them stop but to no avail.

So she stood there her arms churning invisible air while she caught her breath.
Finally she clasped her hands together and leaned against the side of the table.

After a few jerky movements, her arms finally calmed.

Sighing in relief, she tiredly grabbed a ladle and scooped some of her potion into a clean phial, corked it safely, and labeled it accordingly.

Smiling wearily at her finished product, she looked over at the other students in the room and her eyes widened when she saw a miniscule green version of Tiberius.

Letting out a squeak, she eyeballed her potion…what if she had to drink it? Had she done everything right?

Shaking her head in fear, she walked back to the back storage and put all the jars away in their proper alphabetical place.

Taking her cutting board, bowls, spoons, stirrer, mortar and pestle, and measuring beakers she took them all to the back sink and scrubbed them all clean, performing one of the only cleaning spells she knew on them all. ”Scougify.”

Earlier her ears had perked up at the instructions Kazimeriz had given another first year on how to cure her cauldron but looking at hers now as she made her way back made her realize she didn’t even know what to do with the left over potion.

Raising her hand since the Professor had said to ask him if there was anything he could help her with, she asked what was on her mind smiling sheepishly.

”Professor, I think I’m done but I find that well I don’t know what to do with the left over potion.”

HA! Jake couldn't conjure anything.

Still, he watched Kazimeriz closely before raising his wand and trying for himself.

"Ag-aguammenti… no, wait... Aguamenti Glacies!" Jake said, shaking his wand down as if he was trying to get water (or magic ) out of it. He'd spoken slower than Kaz had, in an attempt not to stutter. Even then he'd had to think the words through a dozen times.

Boiling hot water cascaded out of Jake's wand and into the bowl, melting the ice already there. It was all Jake could do not to shout and scream, so instead he just stomped his foot.

"C-can't dddo it," he stated simply, after the first try. "I suck at muhh-magic!"

Matheu was kinda thrown back. Not offended, just a little thrown back by the professor questioning his doubt. But he had the right. "I involved the chemistry so that I can recieve a better understanding on the properties of the blood based off what my father told me. I want to alter the DNA structure of a plant just to merely experiment. I'm trying to experiment with the blood to create a simulated potion of a Metamorphamangus' properties. Does that make sense at all, Professor?" Matheu asked politely, slightly questioning the order of his thoughts. He left all of his more complicated notes in the common room. Dang it! He could use them right now.

Kazimeriz chuckled as Alvin... Er, Pryce squeaked with indignation as the potion heated him up, turning his face bright pink. "Oh, relax, Skippy-- you are not burned, you just have a healthy glow." He watched the boy stalk off toward the bookshelves, smiling with satisfaction. The boy would learn. Oh yes, he would.

"I am afraid not. There are some lessons in life which a man must learn alone." Kazimeriz said, shaking his head. Of course they thought he was being cruel. They were young; they did not know how cruel and heartless their world could truly be. Better to learn that here, in the relatively safe confines of the school, facing off against someone who bore him no true ill will, than to take that lesson later, playing a prank or casting a spell on someone less forgiving and ending up dead... or worse.

And yes, there WERE worse fates than death. Much, much worse.

”Professor, I think I’m done but I find that well I don’t know what to do with the left over potion.”

"You may vanish it -- although given your year you may not know the spell yet...?" He raised an eyebrow. What year HAD they taught that charm? He could not remember, but thought it might have been third year. He remembered a student -- a third year -- who had once vanished his own wand. How the child had managed that, he STILL did not know.

"You only find success-- at first -- when you are relaxed, but focused. So it is with wand-work. You must breathe... relax. Practice the charm in your mind, over and over, and concentrate on the outcome you expect until the spoken spell is synonymous in your mind with the outcome. Until you master that, the spoken part of the spell is merely a word, the gesture just random waving of a stick. Close your eyes, Upstead. Think the outcome: ICE. It's cold. Hard. The way it clinks when it hits the bowl. ICE. ICE. Concentrate on it... Picture it in your mind, and hear the spell as you speak it: Aguamenti Glacies. ICE. Aguamenti Glacies. ICE. Practice that, and then try the wand motion again, thinking ICE and saying the phrase: Aguamenti Glacies. Try again. And remember to breathe." the boy would learn to cast, if it was the last thing Kazimeriz did.

Jake was trying, he WAS. It was hard to concentrate with Tibi's troubles over there. And even harder not to intervene or argue. Nah. He'd go see the old man in his office for that.

Okay, so, basically, Jake understood that he had to concentrate. The boy looked from the potion to the bowl, chewing the inside of his lip nervously.

"Ice..." he repeated, his voice soft. "Ag-ag-aguamenti G-glacies."

GRRRR!

"Aguamuhh-"

GRRRRRRRRRRRRR!

Jake, chill out. Remember what he said; relaxed but focused. OHHHHMMMM!

"Ag...ua...men...ti..."

Keep goiiiing...

"Gla...ci...es..."

Okay, so he'd said it once. He was relaxed. Jake knew that the first time speaking it was the trickiest. Now he just had to recite it until he cast. He spoke the spell, speech speeding up as he gained confidence. "Aguamenti... Glacies. Ice. Aguaaaamenti Glacies... ice. Aguamenti Glacies. ICE."

Okay. Now or later never.

In his mind, Jake tried to think of the ice that Kazi had conjured up. He found it difficult, trying to see something that was no longer there. Feeling for a new bowl, Jake placed it in front of him and closed his eyes. Now it was REALLY hard to visualise ice... everything was dark.

I can't do this.

YES, I can.

Can't.

Can.

Won't.

Will.

"Aguament Glacies," Jake spoke the words confidently, shaking his wand in a downward motion, thinking mainly of the coldness of ice, the way it KILLED his teeth. As he watched, water spewed from his wand and, before it hit the bowl, it DID turn to ice. But crushed ice, not cubes.

Still... ICE! Jake was getting GOOD at magic!

"Is thuhh-that okahh-kay?" he asked, eyes bright and a smile on his face as he looked to Kazimeriz.

Today was a good day for Jake.

Today was a good day for Jake.
He watched Upstead struggling and strugglin with the spell, working as though he were not so much casting an ice spell as he was pulling ice out of his very soul. And finally, it happened.

Plink! Plink! little crushed ice bits fell into the bowl. Kazimeriz smiled-- he could not help himself.

Victory.

"It will do." he said gruffly, but his eyes were sparkling and he was obviously quite pleased. "You see? You are the only thing that is limiting yourself. Learn to get around the blocks you set up for yourself and you can do this. Now... I believe you have a potion to brew, Mr. Upstead." He smiled again -a tiny smile, but certainly there.

Today was a good day for Professor Kazimeriz.

Oh.

My.

Life.

Kazimeriz SMILED. Because of JAKE. And it wasn't a sinister 'Imma eatchu up' smile or a 'haha, you fail at life' kind of smile.

It was a normal happy smile. Wonders will never cease.

Jake might have hugged the Potion's Master, had he not known it would totally wreck the good vibes currently apparent in the room. "Thuhh-thank you, sir!" the boy beamed at Kazi, so very very grateful towards the man. Yeah, he'd practice all kinds of simple magic in his free time. He'd get real good at it.

And now he was absolutely DETERMINED to do the potion right.

So, with a last 'thank you' look at the old man, Jake hurried back on over to his workstation, where he picked up his list and read through it over and overrrr and OOOOVVEERRRR again. He had to be precise.

As he started checking his equipment he'd already set up, Jake chanced a glance at Tibi. Poor kid... but gotta learn. You do NOT prank Kazi. You just don't.

Unless... well... you wanted what Tibi was getting now.

After prepping, Nina suddenly remembered the first thing Professor Kazimeriz told them in class: Write everything down!

She reached into her bag and pulled out her notebook and pencil. She wasn't going to bother with her quill. She was saving her ink strictly for class assignments. This was a personal assignment. She wrote:
Quote:
Pour water in cauldron and set over....
Set over??

She called for the Professor.

"Sir, what heat should I brew this potion over? It says in the book, but the words are faded, I can't read them." she askd. Phew, thank Merlin she remembered to ask. This might have gone terribly wrong.

So she skipped a line and continued:
Quote:
Wait to boil.
While waiting, finely chop scurvy-grass.
Half 6 Jobberknoll feathers.
Measure out 3/4 oz. powdered sneezewort.
Measure out 2 oz scurvy-grass.
Measure out 4 whole lovage.
Measure out 1 oz. Flobberworm mucus.
Okay, now once her question is answered, she can begin brewing!

Kazimeriz chuckled to himself and left Upstead to work on his potion as he went to check on the other students. He knew Upstead would get it if he just was willing to let himself succeed. He had the makings of a fine wizard, not that he would be quick to tell him that. Not just yet. It is akin to repairing a broken femur that has healed badly. You sometimes need to re-break the bone so you could set it properly and cast a mending charm; only then can it grow strong and straight as it should. So it is with Upstead. I am here to teach him to be a wizard... not to be his friend. Still, he couldn't help feeling a bit happy at the boy's success... It was a milestone.

"It should read 'over a low flame.'" Kazimeriz said, glancing at the book. It was ancient, dusty and faded. "I must remember to get this volume restored properly. It is out of print. Bring the water up to a boil SLOWLY... do not rush that process. It is important in this brew."

Okay, so. Potiontimes.

All his equipment was set up and triple checked. It was cleaned perfectly (as was the Jakey way, after all) and now in its appropriate area.

Wasting no time, Jake, with all the ingredients he needed fresh in his mind, went to the cupboard with all the ingredients availabe to students, and got a little willow bark, which he would measure out in a second, a couple of snake fangs like the ones they'd used in class, a vial of (GAG!) horned toads' bowels and then, the easy measurement of one porcupine quill.

And that was the easy part.

As Jake set everything down on his table, he looked at his journal thing, bit his lip, and looked back at the ingredients. If he took the time he always took to write in the journal, the potion would be ruined.

Sooooo... it was time to break out his NEW special quill. The one his biological father () had sent him. It had been properly magicked and everything, so Jake would dictate without even holding it and it would write, dip for ink, even turn the journal page. So, yeah, Jake set that up, balancing the dark blue, ink-loaded quill on the parchment, where it waited for something to right.

Time to measure! Murmuring (and still stuttering, though the quill wouldn't pick that up) under his breath as he went, Jake checked his mortar and pestle one last time for ingredient residue, before putting what seemed about 2 grams of the willow bark. He crushed it absolutely, and the bark was just short of becoming a fine powder by the time he thought himself finished with it.

Preparing a clean little vial for the bark, Jake began meticulous weighing up the ingredient, wanting to keep this perfect. He lay a sheaf of parchment on the scales, then zeroed them manually before pouring the crushed bark on top. At first he went predictably over the amount he needed, but with a few tiiiiiiiny scoops of a tiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiny spoon type thing, he had enough. Exactly the amount. Jake folded the parchment so he held it by two opposite corners, and poured the contents into the vial he'd set up, ensuring that he got it ALLLLLL in. Every last speck.

As the quill noted all this down, Jake went to the back of the room where a sink stood, and he scrubbed the mortar and pestle until they were completely clean, and then used paper towls to make sure they were stone dry. He was getting a little obsessed about the cleanliness of the equipment, but hey! Better to be safe than sorry.

The process was repeated completely, only this time with the snake fangs and with a new piece of parchment, and new vial and the smaller measurement of 0.4 grams. Easy.

This time when Jake cleaned the mortar and pestle, he didn't waste valuable time rechecking it. He always had time to come back later and thoroughly clean everything.

So yeah ICKYTIMES! with the measuring out the bowels. Jake didn't bother with the parchment this time; he just checked the scales were clean and measured it straight onto that, trying not to heave up as he did, and still dictating to the quill. When THAT was all sorted, Jake returned the ingredients he wasn't using back to their rightful places, and cleaned up the equipment again. Then he returned to the workstation and thought.

Ice water... the bowl of crushed ice he'd made earlier would have melted by now, and he'd have ice water. As for brewing on ice, that was now sorted. Jake went over to get the bowl of water, returned, measured out 500ml (there was easily enough), set it to one side, and brought out another bowl.

ICETIMES!

"Aguamenti Glacies!" he stated confidently, trying OH SO HARD to visualise ice ICE IIIIIIIIIIIIIICE! Glaciers! The North Pole! SANTA!

Oh, lookit. THERE WERE SOME ICE CUBES!

Not NEARLY enough, though, so Jake repeated the spell a few times, getting more and more enthusiastic, until suddenly there were a few ice cubes cascading over the edge.

Jake quickly put the extra ice back in the sink, returned, poured the ice water from earlier into his cauldron, set THAT over the ice...

And took a deeeeeep breath.

It was time... to do this thang.

This was going well! "Not formal experience, sir," Matheu confessed. "My step-mother is a witch and she introduced me to potion brewing, and taught me some integrated things about plants. I've read the material of most NEWT levels as free and extended study. And, yes, sir, I'm a second year; Muggle-born.
Going back to my intention, I only want to brew one potion. Brew one potion that holds the property to fully change the DNA of plants. My step-brother told me about the Metamagi blood: It is more unstable than the blood of a Metamorphamangus because it fully changes the DNA; Metamorphamagi only change appearance. Am I right about that, sir?"
He believed he was right.

Better to learn that here, in the relatively safe confines of the school, facing off against someone who bore him no true ill will, than to take that lesson later, playing a prank or casting a spell on someone less forgiving and ending up dead... or worse.

And yes, there WERE worse fates than death. Much, much worse.
"I understand sir. Sometimes we have to learn from our mistakes. The lesson may be harder, but knowledge gained is more inportant." Sidney knew well about learning lessons the hard way. She still bears the scares on her rear end where Ole Bertha's flames burned her. Sidney did learn to not go wandering in dragon's lairs alone again. She watche Tiberus for a moment and then goes looking for the curing salve.

"Ah I see...vanishing.."

Vanish it? If Ivory remembered correctly that was one of the types of transfiguration...the opposite of conjuring.

Nodding affirmatively, she upholstered her wand.

Grabbing her wand she tapped the fiery tip to a patch on the side of her mokeskin belt. As a satchel billowed out from it, she reached her hand in and fished around even going as far as to duck her head into it.

Aha there it was! Her transfiguration textbook. Flipping to the index she ran her finger down the alphabetical list. V...V....V...Va... Vanishing Spells p.356 in Ch 21.

Oh dear that was quite towards the back...

Slowly she leafed through the pages until she came to the right one.

Vanishing an object simply sends it into non-being, which is to say, everything and cease to exist, until they are re-conjured.

Emytomolgy: "Evanesco" meaning Latin 'to disappear'
Alright well might as well practice.

Ladling a small amount of potion into a bowl she set it on her workstation next to a clean one and stared at it for a while. Concentrating...and eventually talking to it quietly.

"Listen here glop you're going to vanish alright and your gonna like it."

In her head the incantation repeated itself again and again as she visualized the small bowl clean and empty just like its neighbor.

Evanesco. Empty bowl.
Evanesco. Empty bowwwl.
Evaneeescoooo. Empty bowl.

Her lips were actually mouthing the words and eventually she felt as if she could start saying it aloud.

"Eeeeeevaneeescoooo"
"Evaaaaneeesco"
"EvAnEsco"
"evanesco?"
"EvanescO"
"EvanEsco!"

Having learned Spanish and Italian at a young age she usually liked sounding out incantations to try to find the way they flowed best.

"EvanEsco," still saying the incantation she now put all her concentration into imagining the full bowl empty, squeaky clean, crystal clear while visualizing the potion vanishing and just not being. Hmm how did that work actually...nonbeing? As in it just stopped existing? Or did that mean it did exist somewhere else...or just when it was needed?

Now she went back to merely thinking the incantation and now practiced the wand movement..a point?

Hmm...she would've thought it'd be more complicated or involve certain minute flicks and whatnot. Shrugging, she practiced pointing a few times.

After a few minutes of pointing rather exaggeratedly, she decided to start doing it all together.

"Evanesco!" She pronounced in time with her point while concentrating on the future emptiness of the bowl

Hmm...nothing.

Pushing up the sleeves of her robes, she got ready to try again.
"Evanesco!"

The liquid in the bowl merely rippled as if having just slightly been moved.

Sighing, she tried again...and again...and many times again.

...........................numerous tries later.............................

Frustrated, Ivory felt as if she wanted to pull her hair out or just throw a fit and throw everything down the sink.

But no, she had more control then that...at least that's what she tried to convince herself of.

She had long since made an unbreakable vow to herself that she was going to learn this....TODAY! It was a personal goal- a challenge that she had to overcome.

Raising her hand, she tried to not let her desperation show, well not too much.

"Professor, is there a particular wand movement I'm missing or...well if it's not too much trouble can you please help me with this? I'd really like to learn this..." she chuckled slightly. "It's become a bit of a personal goal sir."

So, now he had everything set up and everything measured and in its rightful place, he smiled to himself, nodding. He could do this... he just needed concentration.

Ice water in cauldron was already over the ice, so Jake needed to put in the icky bowels, and from then on be absolutely perfect with timing and stirring. He double-checked everything was ready and on hand, and then, holding the bowels over the ice water, he dropped them in and reached straight for the snake fangs after checking that every ounce of the bowels were in.

As soon as every speck of the crushed snake fangs were in the cauldron as well, Jake pressed a button on his watch which would make the second hand make a noise like a bell every minute since the button was pressed. Because he couldn't help himself, Jake started to count (in his head or the quill would record it) to seven minutes and stirred anti-clockwise simultaneously.

One, two, three, four, five...

Sidney walks past Jake's work station. She stops for a moment and watches him work. He seems to have more problems with magic than I do, and I thought I was bad. Maybe part of my problem isn't a lack of magical ability, it's a lack of confidence in my magical ability. Sidney doesn't stay too long. She doesn't want Jake getting mad at her again. Sidney doesn't understand why Jake took an instant dislike to her. I guess I should talk to Professor Lawson about it. Jake and he seem to be close. She makes her way to the Potion Closet and looks for the Mrs. Scowers Cauldron Cure. Of course it's on a high shelf. It would be too easy if it was right where I could get it. Sidney twist her right arm and her wand slids out of its holster. She points it at the jar and says, "Accio, Mrs. Scowers Cauldron Cure. (Try saying that five times fast.) The jar flies out off the shelf and into Sidney's waiting hand. All right! Way to go Sid! She refrains from doing a little victory dance. Sidney puts her wand back in its holster, and goes back to her work station.

... four hundred and eighteen, four hundred and nineteen, four hundred and twenty.

Of course, Jake had the habit of counting a little too fast, and whilst he waited for his watch to tell him the seven minutes was up, he continued stirring anti-clockwise on one hand and deftly turned on a bunsen flame with the other hand. Not the safest method, but safer than having it on for allllll the time he'd taken setting up and brewing.

When the bells rand from his watch, Jake instantly let go of the stirrer and reached for the willow bark, emptying the lot into the coooooold potion, and tapping the side of the vial to make sure it was all out. He then picked up the stirrer again and-

One. Two. Three. Four. Five.

- stirred it clockwise. As soon as the stirrer was at the exact place it had started from before the 5 stirs, Jake lifted the cauldron from the ice and, thankful the pewter was over ice so far and therefore not hot, placed it over the flame.

Then, as he checked his watch and set up a timer, he thought of something.

"Suhh-sir," Jake called over to the man, keeping an eye on the potion. "This ssssays to allow it to buhh-bbboil for fifteen mmminutes and then tttake it off the fffire. Does that muhh-mean keep it on the ffflame for fifteen mmminutes, period, or wuh-wait for it to bbboil, then start ttttiming?"

He did so want to get it right. It was PERFECT so far. Even if it was a ridiculously easy potion.

His watch was already counting down, just in case, but he could easily reset it at the right time.

Nina nodded.

"Thank you." she said.

So she wrote in her notes:

Now to set the flame...

"Professor, could I try incendio to set the flame?? I've never done it before, but since we're out of class, I was hoping I could use it..." She hoped he said yes. She didn't want to disturb him so much, but she was very eager to try some spells.
