Default Potions Laboratory

A disused room next to the potions classroom has been converted into a potions laboratory. There are several large workstations available, complete with stands and burners for standard size 2 cauldrons and plenty of room to work.

Along the walls at the sides of the room are additional stations holding alembics, distillation trains, calcination equipment, Florence flasks, a large jar of clean glass stirring rods, funnels, empty jars and more -- in short, all the equipment a potioneer would need to do his or her work.

Along the back wall of the class are jars and bottles containing a host of standard potions ingredients. Each container is marked clearly with a parchment label bearing the details of its contents (including the date of expiration), written in Professor Kazimeriz's shaky but legible hand. Several of the larger jars house foul-looking ingredients: there is one jar that appears to be filled with pickled toads, another houses what appear to be large eyeballs from some creature in pale blue syrup, and still others seem to contain the visceral organs of animals - rat spleens, newt tails (which are still wriggling in the jar), and whole flobberworms. One jar of some sort of greenish sap is bubbling lazily, and another opaque bottle keeps trembling, clinking against the others.

There is also a large cabinet that has been triple-locked and charmed. Through the unbreakable glass front of the cabinet, you can see vials, jars, bottles of various size, shape and contents. These are the Professor's private stores. You must receive assistance from the professor to access these ingredients, as all the poisons, rare items like unicorn parts and truly dangerous ingredients in the lab -- including dangerous potions such as veritaserum and amortentia-- are housed in this cabinet.

There is a large chalkboard at the front of the classroom near the Professor's sturdy mahogany desk. On it reads this note:

Welcome to the open studio potions lab. This is a supervised independent studies lab, where you may work on personal projects as well as practice potions for your class assessments, OWLS and NEWTS. Please obey the following rules while in this lab:
  • SAFETY FIRST. Practice common sense and good safety practices at all times while in this lab. Remember that other potions are being brewed around you and exercise caution at all times.
  • WHEN IN DOUBT, AS: If you have any question in your mind about the safety or sanity of what you are planning, please bring your intended potion plan to the professor for assstance. The professor reserves the right to end any experiment at his discretion, especially if it is unsafe or irresponsible.
  • CLEAN UP AFTER YOURSELF. The house elves are not your personal slaves, and it is neither their responsibility nor mine to clean up after you. If you fail to clean up your workstation on departure, you will receive a most unpleasant detention.
  • HAVE A PLAN and WORK AT YOUR OWN LEVEL. Creativity is definitely encouraged in this lab, but please do not just slap ingredients together without knowing the magical theory behind what you are doing. I expect all students to work at their level and if you have questions, please ask the professor. I am always present when this lab is open.
  • WASTE NOT, WANT NOT. Many of the ingredients in this lab are quite costly. Use them with discretion.
  • DANGEROUS INGREDIENTS: Many of the more dangerous or expensive ingredients in the lab are in the professor's private stores. On approval, the professor will obtain any of the necessary dangerous ingredients from the storage cabinet for your use.
  • COMPOUND POTIONS: Only NEWT levels students with prior approval from the professor may work on compound potions in this lab, to ensure that you properly understand the magical theory behind them. If you are unsure if you are attempting a compound potion, please ask. Those who are found to be in violation of this or any rule will be subject to disciplinary action.
ooc notes: Come on in and get creative! This is an independent lab, NOT potions class... this is the place to let your character practice potions, do labwork, and experiment. For the purposes of the RP please presume that Professor Kazimeriz is in the room at all times unless I specify otherwise. Obviously, I am not really here at all times, but I will be monitoring this thread closely throughout the term and will do my best to respond to posts directed toward Professor Kazimeriz quickly and efficiently.

Please RP responsibly! I'm cool OOC with potions-gone-wrong-RPs (accidentally blowing up cauldrons and such-- stuff happens in a lab!) but just make sure that you are ready to face the consequences IC for any actions you take or mistakes your charrie makes. For instance, if you have a vat of lethal poison explode all over you, it is quite possible your character WILL die, and if you are irresponsible IC, expect Kazimeriz to react accordingly. Please exercise good sense and remember to follow the site rules at all times.

Also, if your character is addressing the professor or needs attention, please put PROFESSOR KAZIMERIZ in your subject line for your post, just so I don't accidentally miss it.

If you have any questions, please PM me at XanaSnape. Oh... and most important: HAVE FUN! ~Xana~

I do not believe I have made your acquaintance, girls... I am Professor Kazimeriz, potions master. Mr. Pryce... I presume you are here for your detention?" he could not suppress a smirk as he looked at the second year boy.
From behind all her carefully packed equipment and books, Ivory heard the professor begin to speak. First addressing the young boy, then her and the other girl in the room that she hadn't had the courage to introduce herself to.

There where he could only see the top of her head at the most, she had a small little panic attack. Nervousness began to well up, as the exchanges continued and it seemed the boy that had been waiting for him was here for detention for having pulled a prank on the professor. A prank he seemed to be paying for dearly now.

As Ivory peeked out from behind her book she saw that 'Mr.Pryce' (at least that's what the professor called him although he was bound to have a first name as well) had ingested the swelling potion and was now determinedly trying to produce a shrinking potion while all parts of his anatomy including his tongue were swollen.

Reminding herself to never get on the professor's bad side, Ivory watched curiously as the boy tried every which way to get the job done. Slowly, the professor's demeanor towards him changed slightly. It was at this point that Ivory decided that maybe he wasn't all that bad. Sure he demanded respect in an intimidating way, but his subject did call for it. And now his voice seemed to have become that of an encouraging teacher rather then a person fixed on revenge.

Slowly, she fought the wave of anxiety.

'No,' she reprimanded herself 'not now,' she would not have her first impression with a professor she hadn't even met be one of a regular ditzy first year. Especially one of a professor that had a reputation as he did.

Summoning up as much of her courage as she could, Ivory slipped off her stool, for she couldn't just stand up since her feet hadn't even reached the floor when she'd been sitting down.

She moved out from behind her pile and her table, and came forward. Her walk one that spoke of many things. First that she was nervous. Second, that she was strong-minded and resolute to prove herself as such; And third....well that she was nervous and that was probably why halfway to where the professor was leaning back against his desk she didn't notice the one floor stone that was slightly higher than the rest.

One second she was staring straight ahead at the professor, and the next moment the floor was rushing up to meet her. In a last second lurch, she saved herself from what could have been a horribly embarrassing fall, the result now merely a comical moment she could later look back on.

With as much dignity as she could muster after having almost planted herself face first in front of the professor, Ivory walked the last few steps to him. Still standing a respectable distance of course, there was no need to invade his personal space.

Her face shining with determination and the need to prove herself worthy of this man, she got the pleasantries out of the way.

"It's a pleasure to meet you Professor Kazimeriz."She said, extending out her small slim hand in greeting. "My name is Ivory Vitya Erised, a first year Ravenclaw."

Basic Sleeping Draft
(Lesson 1.2)

Use/Effect:
The basic sleeping draft is to be used before bedtime in order to aid in sleeping. However, it should not be used longer than a week or two or one may start falling asleep at odd times of the day.

Ingredients:
* water (500mL)
* lavender (a pinch; crushed)
* chamomile (a handful; crushed)
* for nightmares: purslane (a pinch)
* for more powerful brew: ginger (a pinch)

Instructions:
* Bring water to a slow boil.
* Add lavender and stir 21 times, counter-clockwise.
* Add chamomile and let simmer for 20 minutes (potion should be pale, clear, purple with a tint of green, though the green may not always be observable)
* For nightmares: add a pinch of purslane and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise
* For a more powerful brew: add a pinch of ginger and stir 5 times, counter-clockwise

Notes:
*Potion can be stored for up to a month, though it is advisable to brew a fresh batch weekly

Simple Sleeping Draught

Ingredients

500ml Water
Lavender 10 Flowers
Roman Chamomile 3 whole plants (minus roots)

Optional Ingredients

Purslane 5 leaves
Ginger Root

Use a standard size pewter cauldron. Pour the water into your cauldron and bring it to a slow boil. Using a mortar and pestal crush the lavender flowers. Remove the lavender and clean your mortar. Then you are to crush the Roman Chamomile flowers and leaves. Do not grind the lavender and chamomile together. You do not want to mix up the ingredients. Place the crushed flowers and leaves into a clean bowel. Add a pinch of lavender to the boiling water. Stir twenty times counter-clockwise. The potion should now have a clean clear purple color. Then add a handful of the Roman Chamomile. Stir five time clockwise. Reduce the flame under your cauldron. Simmer the potion for twenty minutes. Do not stir it. The potion should now have a slight green tinge to it. Let the potion cool. Then pour the potion into individual vials. Take the potion when you have difficulty sleeping. The potion should be used within a week after brewing.

There are a couple other ingredients that can be added to the potion. If you suffer from nightmares, add a pinch of crushed Puslane leaves. Puslane is also known as Pigweed. Add a pinch of Purslane after the chamomile has been added and the potion has simmered for twenty minutes. Make sure to stir the potion five times counter-clockwise.

If you need a more powerful sleeping draught, you can add a pinch of fresh ginger root. The ginger should be peeled and cut into small pieces. It is then crushed using your mortar and pestal. Add a pinch of ginger to give the potion and extra kick. You would also add this ingredient after the chamomile has been added and the potion has simmered for twenty minutes. Stir five times counter-clockwise just like you did with the Purslane. Both the Purslane and Ginger can be added to the same potion. Follow the same direction for adding the ingredients individually. The addition of the two ingredients will increase the effectiveness of the potion’s anti-nightmare powers.
I should probably get all my ingredients and other things together before I start the potion. Sidney walks over to the Professor's Potion Ingredients.. She finds the the twigs already bound in small bunches just the right amount she needs. Sidney then finds a bunch of dried lavender. She takes these things over to her work station. Sidney then grabs a bowl to put the dried chamomile flowers. and the purslane. The last thing she needs is a ginger root. She finds them in a jar. Sidney takes one out, throws it in the bowl, and takes the ingredients to her work station. Sidney then gets everything organized. The chamomile is individual flowers, so I won't have much trouble putting them in the mortar and ginding them up. Now the lavender, I'm going to have to remove the flowers from the stems first. I'd better do that before I build my fire and put the water on to boil. Sidney takes about one stem of lavender from the bunch. That should be enough. She removes the lavender flowers from the stem.. Sidney arranges the lavender and chamomile flowers in seperate piles near her mortar and pestal.

Nicoletta walked into the potions laboratory for the first time this term. Make the potion, sick it in a container, and get out. she thought. We'll see who's laughing when we're done. "Professor Kazimeriz, sir? I'm Nicoletta. I was wondering if I could do some practice making potions, something simple, like a boil inducing potion?" she asked hopefully.

MWAHAHAHAHAHA!!!! Sweeeeeet, sweeeet revenge!

Nicoletta smiled innocently at Professor Kazimeriz as if to say Pretty please, your awesomeness? This could only be too easy.

Nodding in that confusion, he waddled toward the back where there was a sink. He was grateful that he wasn't going to have to run to the bathroom for water. Reaching the sink, he again had the problem of the fat hands. Balling one into a fist, he banged on the handle until water began to flow. Grabbing the bucket, he filled it a few inches so that when he inevitably spilled some, there'd be more.

Punching the handle again, he shut the water. His hands were starting to really hurt from all the jabbing and all that. Clumsily grabbing the bucket, he sloshed back to the table, water occasionally splashing to the ground.

Resting the bucket on the workstation, Tiberius set up his cauldron and fumbled awkwardly with the burner. Puffy. Puffy, swollen and uncomfortable.

A fire finally started under his cauldron, Tiberius dipped a flask in the bucket, once, twice, three times, measuring out the 500mL and pouring it into the cauldron to get it boiling.

Now for the rest of it. Tiberius looked up at Kazimeriz just to see where the man was at.
Kazimeriz was watching Tibi from his place leaning against the desk, the tall man peering at Tibi like a hungry vulture waiting to swoop down. He nodded once to acknowledge that Pryce was doing well, folding his arms across his chest in an unwelcoming stance.

Ladies did not 'shake hands' as far as he was concerned. They offered them to gentlemen. The old ways were getting lost. It was sad. He released her hand.

"You may of course practice any potion appropriate to your year and skill level; as such, a boil-making potion is acceptable. But you must use good practices for safety and keep a tidy workstation in my lab, is that clear?"

Sidney reads the potion directions once again. According to this, I should start the water to boil before I start crushing the flowers. Okay, what to do next? Start my fire or fill the cauldron with water? I don't want an empty cauldron to heat up too much. I mean I'll end up with steam when I put the water in, so-o-o-o what does moma do? Sidney thinks for a moment. I know. I'll put my cauldron on its stand, arrange the twigs under it, and wait to set the fire until I have my water in the cauldron. Then I can start working of grinding the flowers. Wee-e-e-e-e, I think I have a plan. Sidney gets her knife from her potion kit. She cuts the twine on one of the bunches of twigs. She arranges them under the cauldron. Sidney then goes looking for a 500ml beaker. She goes to the equipment table at the back of the room. Sidney finds one, takes it to the sink, washes it out good, and then fills it with water. She takes the water to her work station and puts it in the cauldron. "Incendio!" A spark of fire comes out of the end of her wand lighting the twigs. The fire grows.

While the water comes to a slow boil, Sidney turns her attention to grinding her lavender. The directions say I only need a pinch of Lavender. That's about half a 1/4 teaspoon or an 1/8 a teaspoon. That's not a lot of flower. I shouldn't need to grind, but a small amount of lavender. Sidney grabs a small amount of lavender between her thumb and index finger. She lets it drop into her morter. Using her pestal, Sidney grinds her flowers until they are a fine powder. Using her 1/4 teaspoon, she fills it half full. Sidney looks at her water. It's boiling, so Sidney reduces the fire under her cauldron. When it comes to a slow boil, she adds the pinch of lavender. Sidney starts stirring her potion twenty times counter-clockwise. one, two, three, four, five, six...

Default Hey, Kaz-man. Need yo 'ttentions.
Lovely™ | Captain Hurted | Ariana's Bane | Resident Antagonist | Unparalleled Delight

As much as Jake didn't like Kaz, and as much as he knew Kaz hated him, Jake liked doing potions. They recquired fierce concentration, which allowed him to hyperfocus, work in a solitary way... he just liked the whole structured point of them.

Armed with a piece of parchment which detailed the instructions and ingredients of a fever-reducing potion that he'd found... somewhere, Jake went over to a work-station of his own... keeping a firm eye on whatever was going on with Tibi. That little guy was Jake's best friend; he'd do anything for him, including shielding him from the train that was Kazi.

Soooooo, setting out the equipment and stuff, everything he needed, with a view to cleaning it again before he started, Jake glanced at Kaz, knowing he needed a favour from him.

SIIIIIGH.

Jake grabbed up his little list and approached the tall old man, not nervous... but rather... worried that Kaz would say or do something that would make him lose his temper.

So far, Jake had seen that Tibi was like... all swellededed up... but maybe that... was fair.

Of course, if Jake was in that situation, he'd disagree, and he knew it.

"Puhh-profffessor," Jake began, standing right up by the dude and waiting for him acknowledge him. "I nuhh-need your hhhelp with something."

SPOILER!!: Poshun (for my own reference for now)

Kazimeriz noted the young girl's brewing methods and shot her a 'well done' look before turning his attention back to Miss Erised.

"I trust that if you hope to brew here in the lab that you are familiar with standard brewing practices and safety measures? I do not tolerate sloppy work in my class, nor in my lab." he said. Though his words were stern and serious, his eyes twinkled kindly at the tiny girl.
Ivory's eyes opened wide in astonishment as the professor lifted her hand like a perfect gentleman. Enchanted...did he say she was?
Immediaty her respect for this man increased in tenfold as she remembered her grandmother ranting about how there were no mannered men anymore and how she rarely felt respected for the woman she was. She'd have to write to her about a certain professor...and soon.

Her nervousness almost all gone now that most of the pleasantries were out of the way, Ivory smiled at the questions.

"Oh no, sir. No sloppyness will be seen on my part....at least," she admitted with a sheepish smile, "not intentionally."
"I must admit I've only ever read about the theory and process behind it and of course the cardinal rules and what not," As she said this, a slight crease formed between her eyebrows as she remembered how she'd had to copy them down 15 times each for her Grandmother...oh what a boring day that had been."But I've never actually made a potion by myself."
Subconcious now, she looked down at her feet before shyly glancing up again in a hopeful way. "I can stir though, anyway which way; You name it I can stir it and... without spilling a drop too"

Somehow it seemed important to play up her virtues to this man albeit well the quite pathetic ones that he probably thought were ridicules. But no matter...she would prove herself a worthy student.

"I was hoping to change that today," she continued. "Not stirring, although I'm sure I will, but not having made one alone, I'd like to give it a shot...?"

Quickly before he could answer, she ran back to her books picking out one and running back to stand right before him.

"I'd like to try....," she mused in a breathy voice."...this one!"

Opening the book to one of the first potions, she turned the book so that he could see which one she meant.

SPOILER!!: Page out of Magical Drafts and Potions

Aging Potion

Use and Effects: Self-explanatory

Ingredients:

*Prune Juice (10 mL)
*Hairy Fungus (2 g, mashed)
*Tortoise Shell (2 g, powdered)
*Caterpillar (5 g, sliced)
*Bat Tongue (1, diced)

Instructions:

1) Prepare all ingredients as listed in the ingredients list, weighing and measuring each carefully.

2) Slowly heat the red wine and prune juice and begin stirring clockwise until you can just see bubbles starting to form. (The mixture will be dark purple/brown)

3) Immediately add the Hairy Fungus and continue to stir clockwise for ten minutes. (The mixture will slowly fade to a lighter purple/brown)

4) Continuing to stir clockwise, add the tortoise shell. (The mixture will be a creamy color)

5) After eight minutes, remove the cauldron from the heat and add the caterpillar and bat tongue, making sure to continue to stir the solution in a clockwise motion.

6) As the potion cools, it will turn milky white. Once it is completely cooled (about fifteen to twenty minutes), you may cease your clockwise stirring and dispense the potion into appropriate vials for storage.

Her eyes traveled back and forth between the page on the book and Professor Kazimeriz, a hesitant smile on her face. Would he say that it was impossible for someone who had just read all the books and hadn't even practiced the art besides stirring...that she should just leave out of his sight. Or would he just silently shake his heads in that horrible way adults had of making you feel completely inadequate. Maybe he would just glare at her pointedly until she broke...Oh no, she thought. What if she broke. What if she started crying like the little first year she was and just break down and make him never want to teach kids again. What if...
Licking her lips in anticipation, she began to speak.

"It's alright I mean if you think I shouldn't but," It was at this point that she decided that if she was told she couldn't she would pester him until she could. It was something that as an eleven year old she could do quite nicely. Pester.
She now stood straight, her feet firmly planted and her eyes stared determinedly at the Professor.
"But I really think I can." Her voice came out confident and respectful but scared at the same time. "I've read and reread all the safety precautions so I'll be real careful, and I know to clean all of my equipment meticulously before and after and well I love to write so documenting everything is just second nature...and...and," She took a deep breath, my how talking quickly took the wind out of you. "I believe I know my ingredients well enough that I can do this...that is if you'd allow me that privilege?" The last part trailed off in a question.

Big wide eyes stared at Professor Kazimeriz intently. All her family had always told her that her eyes were like an open book, that they spoke volumes more than her words did...and considering she spoke quite a lot to begin with that was saying something. So there she stood, eyes saying please, please, please, please, please.

Kazimerz turned at the sound of a tiny bell-like voice at his right. He unfolded his arms and smiled rather pleasantly. "Enchanted, Miss Erised." he said, taking her hand gently. Rather than shaking it, he turned it upward and raised it slightly, as a gentlemen would if he were going to kiss the back of it. (Thankfully, however, he made no such gesture.) Ladies did not 'shake hands' as far as he was concerned. They offered them to gentlemen. The old ways were getting lost. It was sad. He released her hand.

Another young girl approached him. He raised an eyebrow. "I know who you are, Miss Davis. Hoping to earn a few extra credit points for Slytherin, are you?" he asked with bemused smirk. "You may of course practice any potion appropriate to your year and skill level; as such, a boil-making potion is acceptable. But you must use good practices for safety and keep a tidy workstation in my lab, is that clear?"
Nicoletta nodded her head politely and smiled. "Of course sir." He has no idea. she thought. Nicoletta ruffled through the pages of her potions book. Boil cure but no boil inducing. she shook her head. Phyre! she thought angrily. A swelling solution ought to work. Let's hope I can make it. She layed the book open on the table to the page on swelling solutions.

Nicoletta searched through the list for what she'd need. Pufferfish eyes! she exclaimed in her head. She'd just have to deal with it. She pulled on her gloves and grabbed the ingrediants from the storage cabinet. Careful not to spill anything, Nicoletta followed the instructions. Simmering and stirring the potion. As she added the pufferfish eyes, the potion clouded over on top so that she couldn't see the top of her cauldron. Apparently it was supposed to do this.

She waited for the steam to leave as the book said and continued on with the potion. Upon finishing, Nicoletta asked Professor Kazimeriz sheepishly, "How'd I do?"

Tiberius looked down at the ingredients and the knife. This was going to be the hard part. Tibi poked at the knife with a fat finger. How was he supposed to hold that? He closed his eyes, trying to think. Simply picking up the knife wasn't going to work. There'd be no way to close his fingers around it.

Opening his eyes, Tibi was struck by inspiration. Pushing the knife to the end of the table with the edge of one hand, he kept at it until the handle of the knife hung over the edge. Placing his index finger on one side of the handle, and his middle on the other, he squeezed them tight and lifted so that that knife handle was held securely in the 'v' between his fingers, the very end of the handle pressing against his palm for support. Balling his hand into a fist best he could, the knife stuck up from it like a finger.

That would have to do.

Using his free hand to push the daisy roots to him, he took a deep breath. Putting the blade to the roots proved difficult and his chop was more of a 'squish' but the roots did end up in smaller pieces, so that would have to do.

Passing over the shrivelfig for a moment, Tibi turned to the caterpillar. This time, rather than pressing with the blade, he sawed back and forth like he might a loaf of bread, trying to separate it into even slices.

Slices? Maybe. Even? maybe. Smaller pieces? Sure.

Tibi frowned, incredibly frustrated. Putting down the knife, he opted to try to peel the shrivelfig by hand, his fat fingers fumbling clumsily. He thought to get a nail under the skin and then peel that way, but as he tried to hold it steady, he applied too much pressure and the ingredient flew out of his hand and across the room.

Right at Kazimeriz.

Having been watching Tibi out of the corner of his gaze, Jake was thinking that maybe it was a bit cruel to make him do that... And dangerous.

Which... was proved when something came flyyyyying towards the man...

Not good.

Forgetting the man could probably stop it with magic, Jake shot out his hand straight away with his cat-like reflexes and snatched it out of the air.

Ahem... Well, problem solved. But would he still be mad that Tibi let it fly in the first place.

Either way, Jake just pretended nothing had happened. Better that way.

Tibi's eyes were wide as he watched the shrivelfig fly through the air and be plucked from it by Jake. He smiled, gratefully but hesitantly, seeing his friend.

But back to work! Tibi looked down at his station, grateful that he had grabbed extra of everything. The water was beginning to boil and a bit of panic set in. He had to get this thing peeled and everything in before there was no more water left! Frantically picking at the shrivelfig with his thumb nail, he picked away most of the peel. But only most.

Nevertheless, Tiberius put his hand palm up along the edge of the workstation and pushed the chopped (mauled?) daisy roots into his hand and threw them in the cauldron. Then he threw in the shrivelfig. And then he repeated his push-maneuver with the too-slimy, too-mushy, squished instead of sliced, caterpillar. It felt strange against his skin, his hand too fat for gloves. Throwing them into the cauldron as well, Tiberius grabbed the stirring rod between two fingers and began his two minutes of stirring.

He rolled his fat tongue around in his mouth, looking up occasionally, beads of sweat on his forehead. What if he didn't make the potion right? Would Kazi leave him like this??

Releasing the rod at the end of two minutes, Tibi dragged a caterpillar-ick covered hand across his forehead to wipe the sweat without realizing it until the goo was smeared in his hairline. He followed his shoulders forward and hung his head.
Almost done... almost done..

Tibi pinched a rat spleen between two fingers and then dropped it into the palm of his hand, before tipping it into the cauldron. Finally, he shakily picked up the leech juice. Holding it over the cauldron, his hand trembled as he tipped the phial slightly and the juice splashed in. Was that a dash? Was that more than a dash?

Tibi put the phial down and gave the cauldron a stir as it set to simmer for the next 30 minutes. It was a waiting game now.

Matheu walked into the lab with a different feeling than he expected. Potions wasn't really his thing in class, but this tone and location felt unique. When he walked in, he smelt the fumes and heard the bubbling of concoctions from numerous experiments. It reminded him of his old science lab in the Muggle World.

When he found a cleared off table, Matheu took a spare cauldron from the shelf and took out his books -- both his standard and annotated texts -- quills, ink, notebooks, and ingredient charts. He needed to work on something that would test his skills but will also teach him.

He read something about "Metamagi" blood. Not the blood from the Metamorphomagi species, but a different type of blood used in alchemy and creative potions that allows a more stable change than fluxweed. Luckily, Matheu's step-mother was able to get him 6 ounces of the blood! Matheu knew one complimenting ingredient to Metamagi blood: griffin claw wrapped in basil leaf. The griffin claw would subside the nitrogen chemical base and the basil leaf would contain the polar acidic solution within the copper of the blood.

"Now what would balance the equation?" Matheu asked to himself. He was always good at chemistry. His dad used to teach college chemistry at Oxford before all the magic started to influence their lives, and so he was able to understand some of the chemical mess.

He opened his notebook, drew out his alchemy chart, and inked up his quill. He sat thinking about all the math mess and elemental involvement, then he wrote:

Code:
(CH3)3C–OH +  HCl (37%) <-- --> (CH3)3C–OH2(+) Cl(–)  <-- -->    (CH3)3C(+) Cl(–)  +  H2O  -->   (CH3)3C–Cl +  H2O
dy/dx + 4E(y) = Rn(x)/uPl(y)
x=HCl
y=(CH3)3C
Matheu set up his equation and problem, reasoned the derivatives, figured the balance, calculated the probability, subdivided the possible integration, and performed the alchemy functions. When all that was done, he founded 5 possible ingredients:

1) Ginger
2) Mistletoe
3) Jobberknoll
4) Egg yolk
5) Cherry wood embers/coals

Matheu looked at the wall of ingredients and debated what to pick . . .

"Certainly, Mr. Upstead... How may I be of assistance?" his eyes narrowed as he looked over to the boy, immediately suspicious.

Kazimeriz smiled at the girl, utterly charmed. She could stir 'any which way'-- adorable! He nodded to her. "You may absolutely try this potion; if you find you have any questions or trouble, you just let me know and I shall advise you." He glanced again at the potion; it was a simple one, and so there was no reason she could not succeed. "Do be careful to mash the fungus thoroughly for best effect and stir thoroughly after the bat tongue; the more vigorously you stir it during that last step, the more potent your potion will be." He tipped her a grandfatherly wink and moved on to assist the next student.

Shrugging one shoulder, Jake inspected the potions ingredient he held in his hand. He really ought to regret catching the thing and to have just let it whack Kazi SMACK in the face, serve him right for being such a hateful old codger... but Jake didn't quite have that emotion in him. He couldn't hate anymore than he could love.

"No problem," the boy replied, tossing it into the air and catching it again. He'd go put it at Tibi's station before he started making his own potion.

Right. To business.

The boy didn't realise quite how he was being regarded, and so didn't take any offence... yet. It was only a matter of time though, he realised, before Kaz said or did something which showed how much he really hated Jake. Because that look... there was something there... but WHUT?!

Jake held out his list of... whatever it was; instructions/ingredients... to Kazi and pointed to a particular part. "If I'm ruhh-reading this ppproperly-" Which he might not be. "-it suhh-says I gotta... use ice wuhh-water and buhh-brew it on... ice..."

Weird.

"Duhh-do you hhhave ice? Or... cuhh-could you mmmake ssome? I'm liable to sssstart a fuhh-fire if I try..."

Had to be honest, right?

The man was going to tell everyone, wasn't he? And then even single student was going to think Tiberius Pryce some sort of delinquent. Hanging his head -- well, as much as one can when it's so swollen that your chin already practically touches your chest -- Tiberius waddled over to the girl's station.

Looking into the cauldron, he shrugged. He didn't remember very much about how he'd gotten the solution, if he'd even made it or anything else about that day, other than the actual prank.

"Ah eth o" he mumbled, finding it impossible to pronounce consonants. He looked back to his station and his simmering potion. It had to work.

Had to.

Kazimeriz evaluated the work. "Excellent work, Miss Davis. The clouding effect is a sign of a good quality swelling solution. Of course, perhaps we should ask the opinion of one of your classmates..." Kazimeriz glanced at Pryce. "Pryce is an expert on swelling solutions; it is the reason he is serving detention in this lab."

Kazimeriz saw the shrivelfig fly toward him, but Upstead's reflexes were fast- faster than his own, as much as it pained him to admit it to himself. "Thank you, Upstead." he said stiffly.

"What do you think, Pryce? Does Miss Davis' swelling solution appear correct to you?" Kazimeriz asked, smirking. "Do come and have a look; your potion needs to simmer anyway." Yes, apparently Tiberius Pryce was now Kazimeriz's personal Teacher's Aide on Tuesdays. Lucky boy.

Nicoletta nodded her head. "Thank you sir." When she heard that the boy was in detention because of the potion, her eyes grew wide (but only slightly). Mabey I won't throw this at Elizabeth... she thought. Nah, wouldn't be worth it. She set to cleaning her station. She took her equipment back to the sink and rinsed it off, pouring the potion down the drain. She took her cauldron and the rest of her supplies back to her desk. She wiped the desk off and checked to make sure everything was clean.

Fifteen, sixteen, seventeen, eighteen, nighteen, twenty... That's it. Sidney takes out her stirring stirring stick, looks at her potion, then her textbook. According to the directions, the potion should have a clean, clear, purple color. Sidney looks back at her potion. Looks clear and clean to me and definitely purple. Now... what do I do next? According to the instructions, I have to wash my mortar and pestal. Don't want to crush the Chamomile with the residue of the lavender. Can't mix the ingredients together before they are mixed in the potion. Okay. Sidney writes down everything she's done so far, then she takes he mortar and pestal to the sink and washes them good. She dries them and goes back to her work station. [I]I need a handful of Chamomile. Sidney grabs a handful of the flowers and places them in a dish.
She adds the chamomile to her mortar a little at a time and grinds them with her pestal. She pours the ground chamomile in a clean bowl. When she has ground all the chamomile, Sidney adds it to her potion. Using her stirring stick, she stirs the potion five times clockwise. The instructions say I need to reduce the heat and let the potion simmer for twenty minutes.
Sidney points her wand at the flame under her cauldron and says, "Minutum Flamma." The flame decreases. The potion begins to simmer. Okay, I have twenty minutes to kill. Guess I'd better clean up my work station and work on my potion notes.

Sidney collects up the bowls, her mortar and pestal and takes them to the sink. She washes and dries them. Sidney puts the school bowls back where they belong. She then returns the lavender and the chamomile to the lab stores. Now what do I do? Sidney looks around. I can always update my potion journal for this one. Sounds better than just sitting here and twiddling my thumbs until the potion finishes simmering. Wait a minute. I forgot one thing. Sidney goes to the potion store and finds a twenty minute hourglass. She brings it to her station and turns it over.

Matheu was kind of stumped. He didn't know what quite would mix well with Metamagi blood. He called the professor over, hoping he would get a sense of purpose.

Nina walked in slowly... then she suddenly stopped. Oh there are people here?? Oh well, I just hope I don't blow up the whole lab. If I'm even allowed to make a potion...

She heaved her cauldron onto a work table. She was such a weakling...

"Professor Kazimeriz??" She said, looking around for the professor. "My name is Nina Woods, I was only wondering if you could give me a potion to practice. I'm only a first year, but I'd like to be challenged... if you will.."

After she said that, she was greatly doubting her decision to come here. She could only hope Professor Kazimeriz would allow her to, seeing her interest in potions. That would make him happy, wouldn't it??

Sidney looks up from her potion notes. The sand in the hour glass have run out. Time to check the potion. Let's see... Sidney reads the potion instructions.

Quote:
The potion should now have a slight green tinge to it. Let the potion cool. Then pour the potion into individual vials.

There are a couple of ingredients that can be added to the potion. If you suffer from nightmares, add a pinch of Purslane leaves. Purslane is also known as Pigweed. Add a pinch of Purslane after the Chamomile has been added, and the potion has simmered for twenty minutes. Make sure to stir the potion five time counter clockwise.
She looks at her potion. It has a slight green tinge. Perfect, now I want to add the Purslane to some of the potion. I don't want to add it to all the potion, just a small amount. Sidney looks around. I can laddle some of the potion into a smaller cauldron, add the Purslane, and then stir it as directed. That should work. Sidney walks to the storage table and gets one of the school small cauldrons and a laddle. She takes it to her work stationand laddles some of the warm potion into it. Sidney goes to the Potion Stores and looks for the bottle of Purslane Plant. Here it is. There isn't a lot in the bottle. I wondered if I should points this out to Professor Kazimeriz. Sidney takes it back to her work station and takes about six leaves out of the bottle. She then checks her mortar and pestle making sure she cleaned them properly. They look clean to me. I need to grind a pinch. Sidney grinds the leaves until they are a powder. She measures a half of a quarter of a teaspoon. Sidney puts it into the potion and stirs it five times counter clockwise. That should do it for this part of the potion. I'd better mark the cauldron that it also has Purslane in it. Don't want to get the potions mixe up when I bottle them. Now I need another cauldron to add the ginger to the potion. Sidney read the Potion instructions carefully again. She doesn't want to make a mistake.

Quote:
Okay, I need to wash my mortar and pestle before crushing the ginger. The laddle too. Can't be too careful when brewing a potion. Sidney collects the mortar, pestle, and laddle and takes them to the sink. She washes and dries them. Sidney places them at her work station and gets another small cauldron. She laddles the plain potion into the cauldron. Sidney then goes to the Potion Stores and get some ginger. She finds a jar full of ginger. Its scent fill the store when Sidney opens the jar. Sidney takes out one piece of ginger She squeezes it to make sure the ginger is fresh. She replace the jar on the proper shelf and takes her piece to her work station. Using her knife, Sidney cuts off a piece of ginger, and then peels it. She then cuts it into smaller pieces. She place some of the pieces into her mortar and grinds it up. Let's see. I need pinch of ginger root too. That's not too much. Sidney measure the right amount and adds it to the potion. Again she stirs the potion five times counter clockwise. That should be everything. I should be able to get several vials of the plain potion and a few with the purslane and ginger added. Let me label this cauldron as holding the potion with ginger. Okay, I need to let the potions cool and then I can laddle them into the appropriate vials. While she waits for the potion to cool, Sidney cleans up her work station. She finds small jars to put the extra ginger into a small jar. Sidney throws out the extra ginger that was ground. It can't be used once it's been ground. She then washes her mortar and pestle plus the laddle again. Sidney also finds two extra laddles to use to laddle the potiong into the vials.

She has some time to kill while she waits for the potions to cool. She gets her Potion Journal and updates her entries for this potion.

Quote:
  • Checked Potion
  • It had the slight green tinge like directions said it should have.
  • Got a smaller cauldron, laddled some of the potion in it.
  • Goes to Potion Stores to find Purslane. Takes six leaves from jar.
  • Return to my work station. Check mortar and pestle. They are clean.
  • Grind Purslane leaves, then measure an eighth of a teaspoon.
  • Add to potion and stir counter clockwise five times.
  • Leave potion to cool.
  • Labels cauldron identifying this one as having the purslane added
  • Clean mortar, pestle, and laddle.
  • Return to work station
  • Get a second small cauldron
  • Take to work station and laddle some of the plain potion in it.
  • Get some ginger root from Potion Store.
  • Cut off a piece, peel, then cut this piece into smaller ones.
  • Grind ginger in mortar
  • Measure an eighth of a teaspoon and add to plain potion
  • Stir counterclockwise five times
  • Label second cauldron as having had ginger added to potion.
  • Place unused part of ginger in a small jar. Label it.
  • Clean up work station
Sidney puts her Journal, quill, and ink to one side. She checks her potion. They are all cool, so I can now bottle them. Sidney finds a tray and collects enough vial to pour her potions into. She starts with the plain Sleeping Draught. Sidney laddles her potion out of her cauldron and pours it into the individual vials. She fill about five vials. Sidney marks them

Quote:

She then fill the vials with the Simple Sleeping Draught with Purslane.
Sidney marks these three vials

Quote:

She follows the same proceedure with the third potion. Sidney laddles it into three vials and marks them

Quote:

Sidney wipes every vial carefully and makes sure the top is in securely. She then performs a sealing charm on each vial. Sidney places the vials back on the tray and places it to one side. She then collects up the three cauldrons, laddles, mortar, pestle, knife, and stirring stick. Sidney takes everything to the sink and washes and dries it carefully. She returns the stirring stick and caudrons to their proper place. Sidney then remembers the bowels she used. She grabs then and washes them in the sink. Sidney then dries them and returns them to where she found them. She backs up her cauldron, mortar, pestle, knife, and potion kit. Sidney then makes one final entry in her Potion Journal.

Quote:
  • Checked potions. Cool enough to laddle into vials
  • Collects vials from potion store
  • Laddle Plain Sleeping Draught into five vials
  • Label the five vials
  • Laddle Sleeping Draught with Purslane into vials
  • Label the three vials
  • Laddle Sleeping Draught with Ginger into vials
  • Lave the three vials
  • Wipe vials, secure stoppers with sealing charm
  • Place vials on tray
  • Clean up work station
  • Put away school equipment used
  • Put away my equipment
  • Make final entries in potion journal
  • Turn vials in to Professor Kazimeriz
Sidney reads her journal entries over again. Everything seems to be in order. She places her journal, quill, and ink into her book bag. She then takes her finished vials to Professor Kazimeriz's desk. "Excuse me professor. I have finished brewing my potions." She place the tray on an empty area of Professor Kazimeriz's desk.

Right. To business.

The boy didn't realise quite how he was being regarded, and so didn't take any offence... yet. It was only a matter of time though, he realised, before Kaz said or did something which showed how much he really hated Jake. Because that look... there was something there... but WHUT?!

"You can conjure it. The wand movement is a downward, quick shaking motion like so--" He demonstrated. "The spell is 'Aguamenti Glacies.' Looking into the cauldron, he shrugged. He didn't remember very much about how he'd gotten the solution, if he'd even made it or anything else about that day, other than the actual prank.

"Ah eth o" he mumbled, finding it impossible to pronounce consonants. He looked back to his station and his simmering potion. It had to work.

Had to.
Kazimeriz looked at Pryce's work. "Very good, Pryce. It seems to be going quite well. Of course, the proof of the pudding... is in the tasting." He smirked and gestured to the cauldron. "Go on then... while it's still warm, it's far more palatable that way."

"Of course, Miss Woods. As I recall you were rather adept in class the other day. How about a nice Confusing Concoction? The ingredients are simple, the trick is to really mix it up well the ENTIRE time while brewing... I think it should be right about your speed." Kazimeriz smiled kindly to the young girl.

Tiberius looked up at Kazimeriz. Time already? Looking back to his cauldron, Tibi waddled toward it tentatively. Kazi said looking good, but did that mean it would actually work?

Or was the man giving him yet another impossible situation? Was he going to shrink so small that his clothes would fall off? Would he grow another head? Horns?

Grasping a spoon in his pudgy hand, he spooned out a tiny portion and raised it tentatively to his lips. Tilting his head back and closing his eyes, he tipped the spoon, pouring the contents into this mouth without actually touching the spoon to anything.

Still grasping the spoon, Tibi swallowed and, eyes still clenched shut, he waited.

"Do you know anything about Metamagi blood?" Matheu didn't quite expect anyone other than his family to know what the world it is. "I'm trying to figure out what would balance the properties of the blood sample to create a potion that will actually morph the DNA of a specimen. Specifically plants." It was an odd question, but plants are the next complicated thing to animals and Matheu wasn't going there! "Here is what I've come up with." He passed his notes to the professor.
