The sharp smell of hot metal cauldrons filled with malodorous contents mingle with the cool, musty smell of dungeon air, marrying to create that peculiar scent that veteran Hogwarts students immediately recognize as Eau de Potions Classroom. Buried deep within the castle's underbelly, the potions classroom is dim and dank, lit only by the flicker of candle-laden chandeliers and the dim blue flames that sit beneath the cauldrons at the front of the class. If you were to touch the bare stone walls, and it is not recommended that you do, your hand would come back to you lightly coated with an unpleasant cold slime-- the accumulation of years of potion vapors, combined with dust and mildew and condensation and things you'd probably rather not think about (much less actually have on your skin).
The room houses several large obsidian workstations, each set with two wooden stools to encourage the students to work in pairs. Each workstation has ample room for the students to set up their cauldrons and other equipment, and the walls are lined with jars and bottles containing all sorts of potions supplies, from friendly-looking dried flowers to jars of bulging eyeballs and entrails. One contains something that vaguely looks like a pickled hand, and it pulses as it floats, as though waving at the students.
Each container is labeled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.
At the front of the classroom there is a lectern and a desk with the professor's chair. There is also a workstation with a cauldron and several bottles and jars. Behind it, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:
Quote:
POTIONS PERIOD THREE: COMBINED CLASS
(Basic, O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. Students)
Please be seated. The professor will be with you momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. Please set up your workstations, inspecting your cauldrons and preparing your equipment. N.E.W.T. level students, please set up your workstation and then assist any lower class students as necessary. I expect all students will be set up and ready to work upon my arrival without exception.

Hogwarts RPG Name: Aschere Tonks
Fifth Year
Oh goody, a puzzle. Aschere put her cauldron away and pushed her way to the back of the class where she grabbed a Gryffindor potion cauldron. When she had made it back to her seat, she picked up her quill and sucked thoughtfully on its tip. She looked at the clues and marked off the four obvious ones first. Then, there were the next level of clues that depended on the obvious ones, those got marked off too. And now came the harder part. She looked up to see that other students had already finished their potions. It couldn't be all that hard, could it?
She looked back at the clues. She couldn't exactly understand what Kazi meant by an ingredient being 'next to' a potion. She decided to assume that he meant the ingredient in question was present in the potion next to the potion mentioned in the clue. She'd have to check on that, though. Still, it gave her an answer. Looking it over once more, she went to the front desk with her matrix to check that her answer was correct.
"Thank you for that rousing performance, Mr. Carter. Now, all of you appear to have your cauldrons; very good."
"Now, as we have stated previously, attention to detail and logical, analytical thinking are critical to brewing potions. These skills are something you will use constantly: whether attempting to develop an antidote to an unknown poison merely by observing symptoms, discerning why your potion does not turn out as expected, balancing ingredients in experimentation, creating compound potions-- the examples are limitless; you need to be able to think critically in order to be successful in potions."
He walked over to the demonstration work station at the front of the class. On the table were four large potions bottles labelled A, B, C, and D.
"Each of you has a cauldron containing a specific 'mystery' potion. Each of the potions has several observable ingredients, both solid and liquid, and another characteristic-- color -- that can be easily observed. Each potion is missing one key ingredient. The missing ingredient for your potion is located in one of these bottles-- A, B, C, or D." He gestured to the bottles.
"Your first task in this class is to determine which missing ingredient you will need to successfully complete the potion in your cauldron. You are welcome to work together, and to assist you I have created a worksheet with a matrix to help you solve the puzzle. The goal of this step in the class is to learn how to think critically and learn to analyze a potion."
He raised his wand and levitated a parchment to each student:
SPOILER!!: Parchment
1. The stinksap is in the Ravenclaw cauldron.
2. The potion containing bubotuber pus is next to the salamander tongue on this matrix.
3. The Hufflepuff Potion is purple.
4. Ingredient D is missing from the green potion.
5. The boomslang skin is in the silver potion.
6. The potion missing ingredient B is directly to the left of the potion missing ingredient D on this matrix.
7. The bubotuber pus is in the Slytherin cauldron.
8. The Slytherin potion is silver.
9. The powdered bicorn horn is directly to the left of the cauldron missing ingredient C on this matrix.
10. The newts eyes are either to the left or right of the cauldron containing salamander tongue on this matrix.
"Please feel free to ask if you have any questions, and as soon as you determine which item is missing from your potion, you may select one ingredient -- only one! -- to add to your potion. Then, we will see who is right... and who is dead." He gave them a wicked grin.
Important ooc note- Good luck! Feel free to PM me with any questions, and once you think you have the puzzle solved you may RP getting an ingredient and putting it in, but please DO NOT STATE WHICH LETTER YOU CHOSE. Instead, PM ME with the answer you have selected (Ingredient A, B, C, or D). Then, I will check your answer and RP whether you were correct or not... That way we don't spoil the answers for anyone who is still trying to solve it. As always, feel free to PM me with questions.
Have fun! ~Xana~
Sidney grabs on of Professor Kazimeriz's sheet. One look is all it takes. I can hear Professor Kazimeriz writing my obituary as I read. I'm a first year. How am I suppose to just look at this potion and find out what ingredient is missing. Sidney takes the lid of the cauldron marked with the Hufflepuff Crest. According to the information at the bottom of the work sheet, the Hufflepuff potion is purple. Well I at least have the right potion. Now, I need to find out what "Visible Solid Property" is. Well the potion is purple, so the visible thing-a-ma-gig must be beets right. They're purple. Sidney looks down the list. No beets. It was a shot. We have Salamander Tongue, Newt Eye, Boomslang Skin, and Lacewing Flies. Oooh lacewing flies sounds so delicate. Sidney reads the clues at the bottom of the chart. Salamander tongue is next to the.... Ok, that's doesn't look too difficult. Sidney looks at the chart. Can't answer that question just yet. On to the next one. All ready marked number 3, so I can forget about it. Oh great the D ingredient is missing from the green potion. That's good to know, could you tell me which house has the green potion? Sidney waits for the sheet to answer. No answer. Professor Kazimeriz perform a silencing charm on you? I know you know the answer just tell me already. Bad sign Sid, you're arguing with a piece of paper. Let's move on to numbe 5. Five and Six are no help. Seven and eight... now we're getting somewhere. Sidney marks this information down on the chart. She then reads 9 and 10. She decides Professor Kazimeriz likes to torture poor, little, first years when he's bored like right now. Sidney continues to try and decypher the puzzle. She thinks she has it right, then she tries to check her answers. Bad idea, Sidney can't dublicate the answers and get them to come out the same. I give up. I'm toast anyway, so I might as well decide on the missing potion ingredient and blow my cauldron up. Two out of three, I guess that's not a bad average for my first term in potions. Sidney stands up and walks over to the table with the mystery potion ingredients. She's tempted to play eny, meany, miney, moe, but decides against it. Kazimeriz has eyes in the front, back, right, and left sides of his head. He would see her and probably laugh himself off that stool. This is going to be so embarassing. What did Professor Cutter say? It's better to learn from my mistakes here rather than in the real world. Here comes big mistake number three. Sidney grabs a bottle, walks back to her work station. She opens the bottle and pours the contents in. Sidney closes her eyes and waits for the fireworks. Lots of fireworks!!!
"Thank you Sir," Dylan smiled. He looked at hi customized cauldron. It was his. Dylan Denver's. Right to do the wit sharpening. He sparked a flame beneath his cauldron. He crushed, cut and juiced his ingredients as the water boiled. He was going to make this perfect.

"While you are retrieving your cauldrons, Mr. Carter will rise and sing An Apology to Gryffindor. Prefect Gold, if you could be so kind as to retrieve Carter's cauldron for him so he may perform, you will earn back the two points he lost for your House." He looked at the boy expectantly. "Mr. Carter, we are all waiting."
Eh?
Gold had not expected Professor Kazimeriz to address her, and she was surprised when he did. "Yes, professor," she said, jumping to her feet, and doing as she had been instructed to.
Retrieving the cauldron and stuff, that is.
All done!

Riiiiiightttt.
She needed to get to work.
Gold was glad she had already set up her workstation. She flipped open her journal, jotted down what she had done so far into it, glanced up at Dylan - it was always good to see him - and, at long last, began to work on the potion. She didn't want to fall behind!

So now she had to brew her own potion. Well this could prove interesting.
She looked over at Carter who was looking through his book now. "You want to work on this together?" They could work with partners right?
"You are to open your text to the pages I stated, and find one of the wit-sharpening potions listed in the book that matches your age and experience. Then, you may brew the wit-sharpening potion, and fill two phials with your potion. One, you will hand in. The other, you will bring with you to finals."
Oh how could she be so stupid? She got it now! Yeah when it had to be dumbed down. Blushing she looked down at her open textbook.
"Thank you Sir" She said, embarresed.
Reading through the book she found one she could at least do. She began her potion.

WIT-SHARPENING POTION
Ingredient notes (Magical Drafts and Potions, Page 401-402)
Wit-sharpening potions may include a variety of ingredients, depending upon the desired side effects or strength desired. However, virtually all wit-enhancing potions contain the following ingredients in various amounts:
Ground scarab beetle
Cut up ginger root
Armadillo bile
Fluxweed
Fluxweed is used to enact a change in a potion. It is a very common ingredient in most potions that require a physical or mental status change in the consumer.
Scarab Beetle is commonly used in potions that require transformation, such as in wit-sharpening potions or strengthening solutions, or in potions that require renewal, such as anti-aging or memory potions. The scarab beetle used may be two-winged or four-winged. Using four-winged scarab parts will result in a more concentrated effect in the potion. Various potions may call for the wings, the head, the shell, or the entire beetle to be used.
Armadillo bile is an ingredient often found in transformative potions, as well as in protective potions. Armadillo bile's magical quality allows for a quality of the consumer to be magically broken down and then rearranged by the potion, allowing the consumer to take on the qualities found in the potion's quintessence.
Ginger Root is an ingredient that acts upon the brain or body to inflame it. Working in concert with the other ingredients in a potion, ginger root is most often found to magically enhance the mental or physical status of the drinker, and as such it is used in many healing potions. Its general properties also include strengthening of prosperity and power, agitating the consumer's magical aura and may create an increase in cleverness, power, health or success. As it assists in potions that create an increased level of success for the consumer, and so is also found in Felix Felicis among other success-driven potions. Potions containing ginger are often banned for use by athletes and those engaging in contests. In dark arts, ginger is often used in magical potions to create severe negative effects as well, when combined with [Editor's Note: CENSORED-- certain ingredient combinations that cannot be printed in this text due to Ministry bans on such information at time of publication]. While ginger is not volatile alone, its ability to inflame can make it volatile in many dangerous potions or when used incorrectly. Ginger also is used by Dobu mages in the Pacific to control storms at sea.

"I vote for that one too," she said. "But we better do one a little harder. I don't want Kazi thinking we are slacking and trying to do first year work." She had felt the wrath of Krazimeriz enough this term, she didn't want to feel it anymore.
Lina started the base of her potion, taking the simplest one first to build on. That would give her more leeway to play with it a bit. She double-checked her scarab beetles, deciding on a four-winged one and grinding it, then setting it aside. She looked through what she had, pulling out hellbore, dittany, and moondew first, preparing them between mixing armadillo bile and ginger. This time she held off on the scarab, looking for the right moment to add it. She added a small bit of the flux weed, looked across her sorted supplies, then found and added in a small bit of powdered moonstone. After a few stirs counter-clockwise she added a little more fluxweed. So far so good, and no explosion! Yay!

"Oh, fine." Carter said flipping through the book again. "Alright... so the scarab bettle one?" he asked pointing to the recipe instructions. It didn't look that bad. And it was at least safer than the potion they made last time.

Working out the chart Kay smiled and went to get her ingredient. Once up at the table she looked at the letters and pick up the letter.......
Kay walked back to her table and pulled the cork out of the phial. Pouring the Ingredient in to the cauldron she stepped back to watch. She had see to many things go wrong in this room to stand right over it. Kay looked up to see where the Professor was. She waited.

Mina stared down at her matrix and thought really hard. She was either making it out to be harder than it really was or she just wasn't getting it.
Shaking her head, she took a deep breath and tried again. She would get it if it was the last thing she did today. Leaning back over her matrix, she went to work.
An x here and a slash there, she filled everything it. Seriously, she was just making it more difficult then it was. Double-checking it again, she smiled and moved up to the table, grabbing the ingredient she needed. She seriously hoped all her work was correct. She really wasn't in the mood for yet another visit to the hospital wing.

I keep on adding the different ingredients here and there. I give it a stir this way then a stir that way. I let it simmer for a bit, feeling good about it.
Crushed hellbore... sliced dittany... more fluxweed, some scarab beetle at last, moon dew, and a little more scarab beetle. Turn turn... sit. Dagworth's Grey Matter Accelerator
Owl Level
Use/Effect:
Dagworth’s Grey Matter Accelerator is used to boost memory power, intelligence, while aiding in concentration and working as an enhancement for higher learning ability.
Like its base the Wit Sharpening Potion, it is especially useful if taken before an important exam
The effects should take place withing ten minutes and will last from 3-4 hours depending on the overall beginning intelligence of the Potion drinker in question.
Ingredients:
Water (500mL)
Scarab beetles (coarsely ground; 2)
Ginger Root (cut; 5g)(ground; 5g)
Armadillo Bile (9 drops)
Essence of Brahmi (Waterhyssop), one fluid ounce
Owl tears (4 )
Whisker from a Sphinx
Hair from an elephant’s ear(1 dram/ small pinch)
Runespoor egg infusion using 1 oz. Rosemary oil
Instructions
Prepare ingredients
Prepare infusion of Runespoor egg
I.e. Heat 1 oz. Rosemary oil until boiling, remove from heat and then gently introduce one Runespoor egg with a drop spoon. Let sit.
Add water to cauldron and apply low heat until a delicate simmer is observed
Add scarab beetles, one at a time, to cauldron and stirring 5 times, clockwise after each
Allow to simmer for 5 minutes
During which time filter the Runespoor egg infusion separating the precipitate from the supernate in a receiving flask
Add the one fluid ounce of essence of Waterhyssop to the receiving flask and set aside
Add 5g cut ginger to cauldron without stirring and simmer for another 5minutes
Drop the Sphinx whisker straight in the middle of the potion, stir twice clockwise
Add 5g ground ginger without stirring and simmer for 5minutes
Scrape the precipitate off filter into mortar. Mash finely. Add Hair from an elephant's ear to mortar mix with a few drops of suspension. (Approximately 4-5)
Once mixed add to cauldron and stir continuously for two minutes.
Add a drop at a time of Owl tears to the lip of the cauldron. Each time on a different cardinal direction of the cauldron starting at North lip going clockwise till the West, stirring 7 times after each addition and waiting 3 minutes till the addition of the next drop. Alternate clockwise and counter-clockwise stirrings
Remove flame
Immediately add the Rosemary oil with essence of Waterhyssop suspension
When heat can no longer be felt when a hand is placed above the potion, (Potion will have an oily texture) add armadillo bile one drop at a time
Allow potion to sit for 8 minutes (potion will smell like stale swamp water)
Decant solution then phial
Hmmm...it was OWL level but gosh it seemed interesting.
Raising her hand she politely tried to get the Professor's attention, her wide eyes excited but weary as she worried her bottom lip with her teeth.
"Professor Kazimeriz, may I please try this potion if I promise to stay to the instructions and umm," she couldn't help her face blushing just the tiniest bit."If I promise to not leave my stirrer in my cauldron...again?"

"Very good... Do not forget to write each step of your process in your grimoire." He nodded. "Perhaps a touch more armadillo bile would help; by this stage it should be a slightly deeper shade of olive." He smiled. "You are doing well, though. Also, have a care with your sleeve- it is terribly close to the flame." He reached an arthritic hand over and protectively slid the sleeve of her robe back a bit away from the flame.

Kazimeriz walked over, looking into her cauldron and then glancing through her grimoire, then back at the cauldron's contents. "Moonstone, eh? An inspired choice, Miss Materia. Moonstone's properties will enhance clear thinking and the ability for deep reflection. I am concerned about the moon dew, however; in concert with the moonstone powder it may compound the reflective process too much, causing over-thinking in the consumer and weaken decision making abilities. You may wish to add a touch of gotu kola with dragon's blood, or else sage with a dram of rue, to protect mental focus from becoming fuzzy as a side effect." He smiled at her; the girl had promise.

Kazimeriz looked at the potion, hesitating. Quite honestly, it was above her level -- possibly even more than a single step above her level. He was uncertain about letting the girl work with a Sphinx whisker- they were delicate and very, very fine, so they were hard to manipulate with gloves on, but the sharp, micro-fine whisker would quickly embed itself into the skin if they came in contact with her hands, causing pain, swelling and itchiness as the whiskers worked their way into her hands like spun glass. And once it embedded into her hand, it would break off, making it very difficult to extract even magically. He absently touched a raised scar on his index finger where a bit of sphinx whisker had once been. How it had burned! And his finger was useless for a week.
However, the way to learn these things was by experience. He nodded. "You may attempt this point, if you follow the instructions to the letter. You will find the Sphinx whisker is particularly difficult to work with- they are extremely delicate, thin and very sharp. You will not be able to use gloves while working with it, but if you touch it, it may embed itself into your skin and shatter into smaller fragments which will also embed into your hands. This is very, very painful and very difficult to remove. I would suggest levitating it into your potion; however, the energy within the whisker may be disturbed if you apply any charm on it, so I am afraid you must manage it manually. Also-- whatever you do, do not take a deep breath around them, lest you inhale one by mistake. They are micro-fine and very light; it is an easy and painful mistake to make." He looked at her sharply; he was not keen on taking her to the Hospital Wing and explaining to the healer that she had fragments of sphinx whisker eating holes in her breathing passages. "Do you understand?"

Mina smiled to herself. Yet again she had been over-analyzing it and it wasn't all that difficult. Flipping open her text, she read through the possible potions and found the most fitting version of the potion for herself.
Grabbing her journal, she quickly jotted down some notes and began to work.
"OK," I say then I add another drop of armadillo bile and the potion turns a little darker. I grab my sleeve and push it back. I don't want to get burned.
Lina nodded, gratefully. "I'll have to be careful... I think I'm going to add a little before I catalyze the almond slivers and sesame oil. I noticed that catalyzing them has a tendency to cause hyperactivity in my energy potion, but it was also the best way to enhance my study potion. Perhaps between the moonstone and moon dew,it will not only counter the hyperactivity, but reduce the reckless behavior I'd observed. Then some of the gotu kola and dragon's blood will finalize the balance I've been looking for."

Kazimeriz smiled. "Are you certain you are a fourth year, Miss Materia, and not a student from Queen Maeve University's potioneering program? Perhaps under the guise of an anti-aging potion?" he winked a very grandfatherly wink at her. "Many N.E.W.T. programs don't even delve too deeply into catalysis, so you are working a good deal ahead of yourself... I trust you understand the process completely if you plan to proceed. Oh-- and you may want to crush the almond instead of slivering; it will be a much more effective promoter and reduce that reckless behavior. You would still want the gotu kola and dragon's blood, though, to keep the focus sharp." He looked over her grimoire again, going over her potions plan. "Are you aware that facial tics often accompany use of 4-winged scarab? And if so, are you planning to address that side effect? I do not see a reference to it on your potions plan."
"I'm still considering it," she said as she started crushing the almond slivers. Something about a de-aging potion bugged her, and not because she'd used it on Raiden and Neptune. But, that didn't seem right either. "I was considering a small amount of Valerian root, bringing out it's anti-convulsive properties. I'm not too worried about its sedative effect considering a small amount of extra sedative couldn't hurt in this case."
She smiled up at him once making sure that her attention could be spared as her potion settled a bit more. "That's why I want to take my OWLs early. I know I don't have a good chance... But I really want to be a NEWT-level student. There's so much more to learn, and I feel like I'm stuck doing child's work." She turned back to her potion making, getting out what she had left of her dragon blood and searching deeper into her bag. Finding she did have gotu kola, she breathed a sigh of relief and sorted it with everything else, preparing the two to be added.

Ivory's eyes were about the size of dinner plates at this point and she found she had to gulp the sudden knot in her throat.
"Yes...sir."
She'd thought that the potion would be alright considering they'd worked with potions that required gas masks...she hadn't thought this one would be that big of a deal. But then...in Potions everything was a big deal.
Still her fingers began to itch just thinking about the Sphinx whiskers. Weren't there some special form of tweezers? It was just her luck that he had given her permission and then explained the danger behind them.
Taking a few deep breaths, she propped her book back up and began to inspect her equipment.
