The sharp smell of hot metal cauldrons filled with malodorous contents mingle with the cool, musty smell of dungeon air, marrying to create that peculiar scent that veteran Hogwarts students immediately recognize as Eau de Potions Classroom. Buried deep within the castle's underbelly, the potions classroom is dim and dank, lit only by the flicker of candle-laden chandeliers and the dim blue flames that sit beneath the cauldrons at the front of the class. If you were to touch the bare stone walls, and it is not recommended that you do, your hand would come back to you lightly coated with an unpleasant cold slime-- the accumulation of years of potion vapors, combined with dust and mildew and condensation and things you'd probably rather not think about (much less actually have on your skin).
The room houses several large obsidian workstations, each set with two wooden stools to encourage the students to work in pairs. Each workstation has ample room for the students to set up their cauldrons and other equipment, and the walls are lined with jars and bottles containing all sorts of potions supplies, from friendly-looking dried flowers to jars of bulging eyeballs and entrails. One contains something that vaguely looks like a pickled hand, and it pulses as it floats, as though waving at the students.
Each container is labeled in the Professor's shaky old man's script, and at the back of the room are shelves groaning under the weight of huge potions encyclopedias and texts.
At the front of the classroom there is a lectern and a desk with the professor's chair. There is also a workstation with a cauldron and several bottles and jars. Behind it, a large charmed chalkboard stands. On it are written these simple instructions:
Quote:
POTIONS PERIOD THREE: COMBINED CLASS
(Basic, O.W.L. and N.E.W.T. Students)
Please be seated. The professor will be with you momentarily. Be certain that you have all your potions equipment with you; failure to do so may cost your House points. Please set up your workstations, inspecting your cauldrons and preparing your equipment. N.E.W.T. level students, please set up your workstation and then assist any lower class students as necessary. I expect all students will be set up and ready to work upon my arrival without exception.
--Professor Kazimeriz
Class Synopsis Post 54: The professor has set a puzzle for the class to solve. Use your analytical skills to determine what ingredient is missing from your potion and PM me the answer!
Post 59 Those who are solving the puzzle receive a cauldron embossed with their house crest and name as a reward. Then students are to brew a wit-sharpening potion. Jump on in at any time, solving the puzzle and brewing the potion!
ooc: Come on in and get set up! Feel free to talk amongst yourselves as you RP setting up to work (just don't turn this into a 'chat thread', or I will delete your posts without warning). Please feel free to RP helping each other set up as necessary. Remember: Have fun! Be creative! and Feel free to PM me with questions, as always. Xana
But this silent laughter, of course, died immediately when he heard what the professor had just said. Sing a song? ''Whaaaat!'' No way! He could not sing! And he did not know any songs about Gryffindor. However the images of what would happen if he objected to Kazi felt scarier than sigging something he did not know before the whole class. ''Fine''
He climbed on his work station and began to sign his ballad spontaneously;
''Oooo i don't know
Oooo how to sing
It would be way better
If you asked me grow a wing
Griffy are kinda spiffy, yet
Lions are not rhymeable
I wish the houses had billiard table
Red and gold are better than being cold
Accept my apology before it is all sold
Being brave is all the rave
My problem is being a slave
Of nothing but my courage
My point is that
A want a huge flat
In the Gryffindor tower
This is my apology
Eveyone should look over
One, two,three, four
Five, six , seven, eight
Nine, ten.
Tipi, tipi, tom, ten''
Kay turned when josh started to sing. She stood there with her mouth open in unbelieveing numbness. He really was doing it and on the table too. Even though she wanted it to stop she couldn't draw her eyes away. "Wow. he did it." She said more to herself then anyone. She looked at Sarah and then turned back. "When is class starting?" Kay said making herself turn away and watch the front of the room until the sing stopped and Professor started.
Sidney makes her way to the back of the classroom and finds a cauldron with the Hufflepuff Crest. Instead of trying to carry it to her work station, Sidney uses the levitation charm. She had perfected it this term. The cauldron makes it way up the aisle without one drop spilling out.
Ivory kept her face low to her journal as she wrote down everything the Professor said verbatim. Looking up as he instructed them to all go get little cauldrons, she hopped off her stool.
Making her way to the back of the classroom, she picked out one of the ones that had the Ravenclaw crest and carefully carried it back to her workstation.

"Thank you for that rousing performance, Mr. Carter. Now, all of you appear to have your cauldrons; very good."
"Now, as we have stated previously, attention to detail and logical, analytical thinking are critical to brewing potions. These skills are something you will use constantly: whether attempting to develop an antidote to an unknown poison merely by observing symptoms, discerning why your potion does not turn out as expected, balancing ingredients in experimentation, creating compound potions-- the examples are limitless; you need to be able to think critically in order to be successful in potions."
He walked over to the demonstration work station at the front of the class. On the table were four large potions bottles labelled A, B, C, and D.
"Each of you has a cauldron containing a specific 'mystery' potion. Each of the potions has several observable ingredients, both solid and liquid, and another characteristic-- color -- that can be easily observed. Each potion is missing one key ingredient. The missing ingredient for your potion is located in one of these bottles-- A, B, C, or D." He gestured to the bottles.
"Your first task in this class is to determine which missing ingredient you will need to successfully complete the potion in your cauldron. You are welcome to work together, and to assist you I have created a worksheet with a matrix to help you solve the puzzle. The goal of this step in the class is to learn how to think critically and learn to analyze a potion."
He raised his wand and levitated a parchment to each student:
SPOILER!!: Parchment
1. The stinksap is in the Ravenclaw cauldron.
2. The potion containing bubotuber pus is next to the salamander tongue on this matrix.
3. The Hufflepuff Potion is purple.
4. Ingredient D is missing from the green potion.
5. The boomslang skin is in the silver potion.
6. The potion missing ingredient B is directly to the left of the potion missing ingredient D on this matrix.
7. The bubotuber pus is in the Slytherin cauldron.
8. The Slytherin potion is silver.
9. The powdered bicorn horn is directly to the left of the cauldron missing ingredient C on this matrix.
10. The newts eyes are either to the left or right of the cauldron containing salamander tongue on this matrix.
"Please feel free to ask if you have any questions, and as soon as you determine which item is missing from your potion, you may select one ingredient -- only one! -- to add to your potion. Then, we will see who is right... and who is dead." He gave them a wicked grin.
Important ooc note- Good luck! Feel free to PM me with any questions, and once you think you have the puzzle solved you may RP getting an ingredient and putting it in, but please DO NOT STATE WHICH LETTER YOU CHOSE. Instead, PM ME with the answer you have selected (Ingredient A, B, C, or D). Then, I will check your answer and RP whether you were correct or not... That way we don't spoil the answers for anyone who is still trying to solve it. As always, feel free to PM me with questions.
Lina went through the worksheet, observing her potion. It seemed rather easy, strangely enough. Once she figured out what it was, she went and got one of the ingrediants and very carefully measured it out, adding it to her potion.

''You are welcome Professor...'' he said when Kazi thanked for his song of nonsense and jumped off the work station on his seat, then jumped off the seat as well to sit on it ''...Ancient''
Then right after smirking at Daisy, he grabbed the parchment before him. YAY! Josh loved puzzles even when they were from the Kazi Ancient Man though he did not always manage to solve them for an unknown reason...getting bored easily. Whatever...picking his quill he began to work on it observing the potion in his cauldron with Gryffindor crest.
Hehehehe. Once he was done, he ran from his seat grabbed the missing ingredient quickly and added it carefully.

This should prove interesting, thought Emily as she began to attempt the parchment. Several minutes and many crossings out later, she smiled to herself and went to collect the correct ingredient from the front of the class and add it to her potion sample.
Ivory took out her quill and made a neat copy of the parchment and started on the puzzle. She didn't want to mess up on the original parchment and didn't want it full of the cross outs and squiggles the way this one was.
Her tongue between her teeth, she squinted down at the puzzle. Sure she messed up a few times but hey that was what the spare copy was for. Eventually, by the process of elimination she was able to figure it out.
Check mark one box. Cross out three. Cancel out the other boxes because only one potion could be one given color and if one was to the left it couldn't be the first one.
Cross out. Aha!Check mark, and voila!
Smirking down at her paper, she copied her results back onto the first parchment and hopped of her stool to grab the missing ingredient to her potion.
Tipping the bottle slowly, she introduced her the contents of the bottle into her small cauldron.

Kazimeriz walked the aisles, checking students' work as they added ingredients.
"Excellent, Miss Materia... Though I would expect no less from you." He smiled and nodded as her potion turned clear, and then completely evaporated, filling the air in around her with a friendly mist scented with her favourite smells. On the outside of her now-empty cauldron, an embossed Slytherin crest appeared to match the one one the lid, with her name in neat script beneath it.
"Very good, Carter, though I would thank you to keep your commentary to yourself lest you wish a detention. I am old, but I have excellent hearing." he glared at the boy. The boy's potion vanished into a haze that was scented with his favorite smells, and the side of the now-empty cauldron became embossed with his name and a Gryffindor crest to match the lid.

"Excellent work, Miss Black." Just as the others had, her potion evaporated into the air, scenting it pleasantly around her, and the cauldron became embossed with her name and House.

"Excellent work, Miss Erised." Kazimeriz nodded as her potion also evaporated and the cauldron changed to a Ravenclaw, personalized cauldron.
"Those of you who successfully use your analytical skills to solve the puzzle will receive the personalized cauldron as a prize. Once you have solved the puzzle, I ask that you take out of your standard cauldron open your textbook Magical Drafts and Potions. Turn to Chapter Six, Enhancement Potions: You will find several wit-enhancing potions on pages 400 through 412, Brews for the Braine, each with a different skill level and noted side-effects."
The classroom chalkboard changed again:

Wit-sharpening potions may include a variety of ingredients, depending upon the desired side effects or strength desired. However, virtually all wit-enhancing potions contain the following ingredients in various amounts:
Ground scarab beetle
Cut up ginger root
Armadillo bile
Fluxweed
Fluxweed is used to enact a change in a potion. It is a very common ingredient in most potions that require a physical or mental status change in the consumer.
Scarab Beetle is commonly used in potions that require transformation, such as in wit-sharpening potions or strengthening solutions, or in potions that require renewal, such as anti-aging or memory potions. The scarab beetle used may be two-winged or four-winged. Using four-winged scarab parts will result in a more concentrated effect in the potion. Various potions may call for the wings, the head, the shell, or the entire beetle to be used.
Armadillo bile is an ingredient often found in transformative potions, as well as in protective potions. Armadillo bile's magical quality allows for a quality of the consumer to be magically broken down and then rearranged by the potion, allowing the consumer to take on the qualities found in the potion's quintessence.
Ginger Root is an ingredient that acts upon the brain or body to inflame it. Working in concert with the other ingredients in a potion, ginger root is most often found to magically enhance the mental or physical status of the drinker, and as such it is used in many healing potions. Its general properties also include strengthening of prosperity and power, agitating the consumer's magical aura and may create an increase in cleverness, power, health or success. As it assists in potions that create an increased level of success for the consumer, and so is also found in Felix Felicis among other success-driven potions. Potions containing ginger are often banned for use by athletes and those engaging in contests. In dark arts, ginger is often used in magical potions to create severe negative effects as well, when combined with [Editor's Note: CENSORED-- certain ingredient combinations that cannot be printed in this text due to Ministry bans on such information at time of publication]. While ginger is not volatile alone, its ability to inflame can make it volatile in many dangerous potions or when used incorrectly. Ginger also is used by Dobu mages in the Pacific to control storms at sea.
"Please read through those pages and choose a wit-sharpening potion that suits your Year and skill level, then begin to brew. As always, I am available for your questions, and encourage you to work together if you need assistance as well. N.E.W.T. level students are welcome to attempt to utilize the sixth-year potions listed in the text as a base, then experiment with adding their own unique twist to the wit-sharpening potion. ONLY N.E.W.T. level students may deviate from the book, however. The rest of you are to follow the directions listed in the text for the brew you have chosen. When you have completed your potion, I ask that you create two phials. You will hand in one, properly labeled. The other, you will bring with you to Finals." Kazimeriz said.
ooc- If you're still working on the puzzle, please continue to do so and PM your answer to me, I will check your work and RP the result for you. If you have already been graded, you can RP a potion of your own invention using the ingredients on the chalkboard along with others of your choosing (but please. only N.E.W.T. level kids --6th and 7th years -- should RP deviating from the text unless you want the Professor to get upset. Which is OK too, if that's how your character rolls. ). Have fun and PM me or ask Kazi if you have any questions at all. Oh, and remember- you get points for creative play!
Bella sat at her desk for a while, looked up at the chalkboard and down at her Parchment. She had a frown on her face as she tryed to work out the answer. It was easy for her, she was not normally good with puzzles. Well mind ones anyway. She smiled lightly as she came to an conclusion.
Bella walked over to the little table and picked up the missing ingrediant, walking back to her table, she slowly tipped the contence into her small couldron. She watching the couldron carefully.
Dylan had added his missing ingredient into his potion. He was good. Very good. Well at least, better than his cousin. What OWL did he get, yeah an A. Dylan was gonna get the O.
Now onto the wit sharpening. Hmmm a tricky one. Should he attempt a NEWT level one, or just stick to a simple 5th year? He could pull off the 6th year one at least. "Sir can we attempt above our level?"

Carter took a look at the worksheet. With his tongue peeking out a bit out of the side of his mouth he got to work. After a few minutes of re-reading the instructions he began crossing off things. If this was that... than that must mean...
And then he was done. He looked over his work. Hopefully he was right. He went to the front desk and grabbed his missing ingredient. He poured it in and hoped for the best.

You may attempt above your year if you feel competent and only if you have not had any failed potions in a previous class, or if you have logged any independent study in the potions lab this term. So in your case, the answer is yes, you may. Please try to keep your attempt consistent with your skills, and be honest with yourself. Jumping too far ahead of your skill level will only land you will a bad grade and some severe mocking from your classmates."

Tiberius tickled his nose with his quill as he considered the parchment in front of him. No.. that can't be that one, soooo, this one is that thing... Tiberius scribbled furiously before leaning back and checking everything over once more. There. THAT was his ingredient.
Retrieving the appropriate secret ingredient, Tiberius added it to his potion, looking to Kazimeriz for confirmation.

"Excellent, Mr. Pryce." He nodded as the cauldron changed, personalizing it for the Ravenclaw. "You may proceed with the wit-sharpening potion, and due to the incredible amount of time you have spent in lab, you are free to work at a higher level if you feel confident in your skills."

She finished in a few minutes, then looked at the board once again, frowning. She didn't 100% get what was asked of them after the puzzle.

Lina was surprisingly pleased to have a personalized cauldron. There was a certain sense of pride with it, and it was certainly something that could be perfectly claimed as hers. She set it aside and began setting up her cauldron. One she had everything out, she also pulled out various extra ingrediants... including some fairly expensive ones. She held up a little hand, considering everything. "Professor, may I be allowed to experiment? An altered wit-sharpening potion would be an excellent compliment to my study potion, and I am attempting to appeal to be able to take my OWLs this year rather than the next."
