Reese looked back at over her brother. "If I can do this, you can do this," she whispered to him. Really, if she could sit without completely freaking out because there was a spider inside a cage on her desk, then Jake could at least try the spell. It wasn't like it was going to work anyways, right? Professor Duskurk already stated that it would be incredible if someone casted the spell right.

She gave her brother a little smile before looking back at the spider that was in the cage that was on her desk. At least it was in a cage. If it wasn't, she would definitely have a heart attack. Shifting her chair back a little bit, she made sure to keep a safe distance from the 8-legged creature in the cage. She didn't know how intelligent these things were at escaping such things as a cage, but she wanted to be prepared just in case it did escape.

It felt weird to even think about performing an unforgivable spell. It also made her jumpy when she stared at the spider. She really wanted to leave, but she WAS a Prefect. If she knew she wouldn't get into trouble with her Head of House, she would leave right now.

She raised her wand towards the spider in the cage, then took a deep breath. "Crucio," she finally said. She lowered her wand and watched the black spider move around the cage like nothing had even happened. Just like Duskurk said, it would be incredible if someone in this classroom could successfully do the spell. She looked down at her wand and decided she was going to give it one more try. Raising her wand back at the spider in the cage, she said clearly, "Crucio."

Still nothing happened. The spider continued to walk around the cage like nothing what-so-ever happened.

"Talking to the spiders will now assist your mastery of the spell," he commented as circled around the room to monitor the students' progress.

"All spell casting is made up of several different elements. There is the incantation and wand movement and then there is the mental and magical aspects of the caster. That is why muggles are unable to do magic and neither than unfocused wizards. It is why untrained wizards aren't as dept as those that are trained. It is why you are here at Hogwarts and not out working right now. Continue."

And he moved on.

"If you achieve the spell, you will know," he said.

"Giggling will not help you, Miss Bott."

"You may," Professor Duskurk said. "Those who leave can find the homework post outside later today."

Listening to the professor, and what they were expected to do, JD looks around at everyone alarmed. Was he serious? Looking at the poor spider in front of him, he looks bewildered. He couldn't do that.

The poor spider! Even if he could actually perform the spell, he couldn't do it. Nope, no way. And there was no way, he was leaving that poor defenseless spider alone either.

Scooping it up, he puts it into his pocket. Watching others, he hopes the professor didn't see him do that.

If she achieved the spell, she would know? That was it? No example of what it would be like? Not that she could respond to the Professor or anything, because the spider on her desk seemed to be climbing out of the box. EEK!

Pointing her wand at the spider, she scowled at it. How dare it try to escape! Didn't she warn the ghastly thing to not move?! "Crucio!"

It...was...still....MOVING! And not twitching in pain like it was SUPPOSED to! Stupid spider. Not twitching in pain.... "Crucio! Crucio!"

Ugh, ultimate fail. It was scurrying away off of her desk. What to do? What does she do!? Ummm...."Accio." she mumbled, pointing her wand at THAT specific spider. She didn't want everyone's spider to be coming at her. Watching the spider fly back towards her, she jumped back in surprise when she realized how fast it was zooming at her. Get away GET AWAY! Swatting at the thing, pulling her hand back when she felt it connect with the creepy demon insect thing, she found it laying on her desk, not moving. Was it dead?

*twitch twitch...SCURRY*

NO! It wasn't dead!

Georgiana nodded and looked down at the spider, "Alright you dumb little arachnid, this IS going to hurt you! Understood?" she glared at the offending bug on her table. "Crucio!" she exclaimed, pointing her wand at it. Again the little thing only jumped a little. She sighed and raised her hand, "Professor, is it ever any easier to do a spell non-verbal?" she doubted it, but then again it didn't hurt to ask...right?

"Eeeeep!" Not working, but she felt SO powerful and useful and smart! O for Neptune, no doubt about it! That teacher fellow needed to come over and congratulate her on a job well done!

Kellen sighed and leaned his chin in his hand, watching the critter he was supposed to be torturing as it worked. Twenty attempts at Crucio and all he had to show for it was the beginnings of a lovely web on his desk. As the spider got started on the joining pieces, he poked it with the tip of his wand and suggested, "Crucio?"

It didn't even skitter, just let him poke it and continued working on the web. He couldn't help but snort, "I admire your focus."

Bella decided to just look and see what the other people’s results were. From the looks of everything it seemed that everyone had trouble trying to get it to work. Bella was frightened. Even though she loathed spiders and would normally get someone to kill them for her, she just felt guilty having to try to make this one go through pain- then die. Why couldn’t it just be, “ok class you have 2 options. You can either use the Crucio on your spider or give it to your neighbor to do it for you,” she thought. “Or scwash it with your textbook”

Oh but she had to do this. Defense against the Dark Arts was needed to be known and to be ready for wherever life would take her, she had to do this.

She got her wand ready
“Crucio!” she said pointing the wand at the spider wile closing her eyes scared of the results.
Nothing. No screeching. Nothing. To Bella this was a good thing for that she didn’t want to utterly hurt the animal so much, she just wanted to let it free, but she needed to do this right. She wanted a good grade. Plus the spider gave her the creeps.

She raised her hand “Do you need to be angry when casting this spell?” she asked.

Kay moved her little spider back to the front of her desk. He said take to it? Ok she was doing that. "Little spider, stand still." Kay pointed her wand at it again and took a deep breath. "CRUCIO!" Kay said with a even voice. No emotions. The spiders front legs moved a little but then nothing again. Did the spiders legs move because of her or not.

"Professor?" Avery asked the teacher, she was a little shy, timid, and afraid to ask but she needed to know in order to succeed. "Can you watch and see what I'm doing wrong?" Avery pulled out the spider and her wand again. "Crucio" she said and poked the spider, the legs twitch again but not for very long and the spider clearly was not in any pain or agony. "What do I need to do to make this work?"

Oliver's eyes locked onto Miranda who was busy biting her nail. He gave her a small encouraging smile and watched her cast the spell.. twice, but of course she didn't succeed. He looked at her face, surprised to see she looked like she was on the verge of tears. He frowned and sidled towards her. “You're a better person if you can't do it.” He mumbled quietly to her, hoping to make her feel better. “Don't worry about it.” God.. he really didn't want her to start bawling her eyes out in the middle of class! And, for some unknown reason because she was an annoying nagging rodent... he cared for this girl.

He swiftly took aim at his spider from where he was standing “Crucio.” He said quickly as if the element of surprise may make a difference. The spider stopped and Oliver was quite horrified to see a back leg twist into a funny angle. It was very brief, not even seconds, but the boy dropped his wand to his side and his mouth gaped a little as the spider began to scurry about again as if nothing had happened.

...He wasn't sure he thought this was cool any more.

Cela picked up her wand and just... held it while she watched the spider, unusually dispassionate for her.

She looked around again and, noticing that her classmates were having a hard time, most of them apparently because they felt bad for the spider, Cela again wondered if it was maybe worth... not doing it.

It would surprise most people to know that Cela was able to find any hatred at all within herself, but the trick wasn't necessarily hating the thing you were casting at so much as directing and channeling other hatred into that thing. She'd had lessons galore on that.

But what would her classmates think of her if she did this? She had no doubt that she could...

"Crucio." She whispered again, this time stroking her wand and not the spider. She still wasn't casting it, just thinking. Professor Duskurk would just assume that she was like everyone else and couldn't do it right? She chewed her lip and stared at the spider.

Brant was alittle ticked off on how the Proffesor was acting, Very rude! He thought, so he used this angry towards the spider and yelled out at the same time without thinking how loud he was yelling "CURICO" and then the spider started making these werid sounds and Brant started to feel sick, He took out his anger for the professor on this harmless spider, He lost his anger and concentraion and the spider stopped moving. Poking it with the tip of his wand he though "Please don't be dead" the spider moved. "Thank goodness", Brant thought he was going to be sick, but he held it in for he didn't want to get marks taken away for getting the floor dirty.

Okay, he really didn't want to do this. but he also knew that there was like no way he would be able to actually hurt the spider if he used the spell. Because he didn't think that it was possible for him to feel the great desire to torture a creature like this.

Sighing, he pointed at the spider on his desk.

"CRUCIO!!"

Nothing happened and the spider just walked away from him. Oh well.

ooc: Tiberius Pryce, Ravenclaw 2nd Year

The man was insane. Insane. Tiberius felt cold beads of sweat running down the back of his neck. An unforgiveable? The small boy's stomach churned and his palms went clammy.

He'd promised himself he'd try. He'd promised himself he'd try really really hard to be better at spell work.

He swallowed hard and stared at his spider. Wand held aloft, but mouth dry, no words escaping his lips.

Sabel nearly gagged at the Professor's new instrucions. He wanted them to talk to it?

He stared at the little gray wonder as his wand lowered to rest on the edge of the desk along with his chin. "Well he certainly doesn't want us to speak nice to you if it's supposed to be a curse of anger." He muttered, watching as the thing turned upside down and then right back around to the way it had been facing before.

"I mean, I actually find you kind of adorible." That was even though many of the students seem to be displeased by their own. "How am I supposed to yell, or get angry, at something that is adorible?"

He frowned and muttered 'crucio' again with no interest in actually preforming the curse right. "No? Well you're just a really laid back fellow then aren't you? You're just like my--" He was about to say cat, but stopped dead in his tracks. The very thought of even relating an attempt of the crucio curse to his black ball of menace wrung his stomach dry.

He didn't really understand when talking came into casting a curse. He tilted his head as he watched his spindely friend. Perhaps the Professor meant jesting, taunting, humiliating, enticing anger. Talking to your victims meant connecting with your victims. How could a spider of all things be affected by the words of humans or wizards? It lived in its own little world.

He blinked and raised his head with a frown. If the curse caused the victim pain, if the caster and the reciever were connected by anger then...."Professor, does the caster feel any type of pain or effect from casting the Crucio?"

For safety sake he made sure his wand was still pointed at the spider.

Oh crud, the professor wants them to continue practicing. Looking at the spider again, which had turned around and was coming back at her, Marie points her wand at it and says a little louder "CRUCIO". Watching for any sign of pain she sees none. Just a spider who seems to be determined to get to her and crawl up her arm. 'Maybe it knows I am trying to hurt it,'' she thinks.
Wait, the professor said to talk to it. Now looking at the spider she says "don't worry there, this will only hurt a little" then points her wand again and says once again "CRUCIO". Still nothing but a spider coming at her. Blowing on the spider to move it away from her again she sits there staring at it wondering what she is doing wrong.

She couldn't do this. Nikki raised her hand. "Professor, may I leave too?" She asked. "I can't do it. I don't want to do." She just wanted to get out. She felt like she might faint if she stayed here any longer. How could the first years take it?! She was a fifth year and she couldn't even do it.

"CRUCIO", Avery hissed again. She was angry at the spider for not squirmng in pain the first time. Stupid little....Grrr... The spider squirmed for a few seconds but then returned to crawling about the desk. Avery saw all the peope leaving. Avery was determined to not leave. She wanted to be able to finished this class. She wouldn;t show any fear to this teacher, or any teacher for that matter.

Watching the others, he's amazed how many of them are willing to try to do the curse. Feeling the spider moving slightly in his pocket, he whispers, that he'd let it out after class.

Not far away, he notices an older Ravenclaw, the prefect, he was sure. Celi... he thinks. Relieved that he's not the only one having a problem even attempting he hopes the professor will move on...maybe to taking notes?

Lorcan was starting to get seriously annoyed. This crackpot had ignored him twice now. He thrust his hand into the air again. "Sir," he said, trying and failing to sound respectful. "I'm concentrating and it's not working."

As if to prove his point he glared down at the spider-grandmother and said "Crucio!" with as much conviction as he could muster. Nothing happened.

He looked back up at the Professor. "See?"

"Okay look you may look like an adorable creature who looks like my tarantula in my dorm room but you're ugly!" He ground out, still feeling a bit angry jut because, well he was. He was angry for many reasons, mainly one which involved him not being able to do anything. "So you know you'll have to be in pain because I'm in pain, you have no idea what I've been through this past year, no idea." he muttered, glaring at the spider and crinkling his eyes again. Mr. Evil wanted angry, he was going to get it, one way or another.

Twirling his wand in his hand again he sighed. He couldn't do it, he couldn't hurt the poor innocent spider. Mr. Evil wanted them to do it and he wanted points he wanted to show everyone he wasn't the one person in Ravenclaw who couldn't do anything. Or who was in love with Myrtle. Oh those rumors irritated him mercilessly. He was NOT in love with anyone or anything, eww.

Lifting his wand again he pointed it straight at the spider and muttered "Crucio." nothing, not even a twitch as her expected. He couldn't get angry enough, even though he wanted to scream. "Crucio!" he said again, remembering all those times when he was ignored. Again nothing.

Allison was tired and quite frankly bored. She already knew she wouldn't be able to cast the spell. And talk to a spider that was nonsense!

"Ok Mr. Hairy Thing. I don't like you, but I don't want to hurt you. But guess what a-boo-boo? I'm gonna have to torture you." Giving it a wide grin because of her growing confidence Allison leaned on one leg, "No need to stare at me like that. I'm big, you be small. It's all for the grade my dear Mr. Hairy Thing. All for the grade. So listen up. Wide and clear, you shall kneel before me once I finish!" Speaking in a louder voice than necessary, and saying things that surely would not happen seemed to give Allison some sense of accomplishment.

Raising her wand she stared at the spider intensely. The spider proceeded to turn its back to her and walk across the desk. And in Allison's head he should have never done that. Suddenly Allison recalled all the hateful things her cousin Bianca had done to her, the years spent being humiliated by other Scotts, and the countless occasions her own family had made fun of the fact she had no father. With all the hate made into a crumpling ball Allison channeled it to her spider and shouted, "CRUCIO!"

It all happened slowly, a small tint of red sparks came out of Allison's wand and the rest was a shade of purple. The sparks flew directly at the spider ignoring Allison, and then...and then...AND THEN! The spider flew into the air and landed on Allison's wand.

If the spider could cough it would have. Absolutely nothing but the drama in Allison's head had occurred. Sighing Allison gave the spider a frown, "Caught me. I don't really care about any of those things."

In actuality she did care, she simply didn't mean all the hateful things going on in her mind. She didn't want to hurt anyone. And if she didn't really mean hurting anyone, then what would have really happened to a spider who had nothing to do with her situation?

With no harm, the spider hopped off the wand and walked all over Allison's desk.

Ah Stupid spider! Legend caught the eight legged creature before it could crawl off his desk. Again. Eying the spider he picked up his wand from the table. "So, just so you know if I cause you any pain or like....kill you, It's Duskurk's fault." Pointing his wand at the spider Legend cleared his throat. "Crucio!" He said loudly and clearly.

Nothing happened.

The spider just tried to run off the desk again.

Stupid spider.

"Sir! I have a question. Let's say this spider was like...not a spider but an Animagus, and I used one of these curses on it. Would I get locked up? Or...would you? Because you're like telling me to do this and you're a teacher. So....that's like...control over someone." This was cruel even for his standards. HIS STANDARDS. "Crucio!" He said again lazily.

Kay watched her spider walk around on her desk. How could the little spider move around so much. Kay trapped it again and pointed her wand. She turned her thought to a thing that made her a little mad. Maybe that would help. KAy took a deep breath. "CRUCIO!!!" Kay watch the spell shoot from her wand and smiled. She watched the spider to see what had happened. Nothing, again. What was she doing wrong? She looked up to the Professor. Putting up her hand, "Professor, do emotions play a part in using the curse?" Kay asked thinking of how she could make it work better.
