There was absolutely no way Professor Duskurk would open his classroom without being present. He had carefully arranged the desks into a horseshoe around the very edge of the classroom so that everyone had a clear view of the blackboard at the front of the classroom and the center floor. In front of the blackboard was a small table covered with a black cloth. There were clear outlines of something other than the table under the cloth, but that was all. Professor Duskurk stood beside the door with a clipboard. "Please state your name and then take the first desk available, working clockwise around the room," he said in a no nonsense voice as each student entered the room. ooc: please act as if your character has been here the whole time if you don't get online before we begin and just add an ooc note for me with your character name. Hm. Well. Mr. Durskurk could expect them to fail all he wanted, but Neptune Bott fully intended to make her spider SUFFER simply to prove him wrong. She sat up straight in her chair, just so that her toes brushed the ground.
"Right. Dear spider I quite hate you," Neptune told it in her ever eloquent way, trying very hard to MEAN it with ALL her being. She included all sorts of practiced LOOKS of hate that she used SO often on her youngest sister. "I LOATHE your existence and now you will SUFFFERRRRRR!"
Too much? Neptune looked around, GIGGLED, then raised her wand to perform the curse. "CRUCIO!!!!!"
...she whacked the box the spider was in with her wand a few times, just to prove her hatred. It probably did not suffer from the curse, but no doubts that poor spider was suffering. |

Sabel was about to ask why, if you couldn't really protect yourself from the curses by anything other than avoidance, they were practising them. He would understand if perhaps they learned a defensive manevour or learned to sense its path. Or something. But just using the curse for the sake of using the curse didn't seem logical to him. Yes, maybe they could recognize it, but from what Professor Duskurk was saying, it really sounded like it was all up to the caster.
He frowned at his wand, then at the spiders and the pity, as well as guilt sprang forth again. He was reminded of the broom. It had been an inatimate object at first, but then he had been told it could feel your feelings. Much the way the caster of the Crucio could sense your anger. The broom responded to that. So did the curse. The broom was like the spiders, tools in the wizarding world to demonstrate a purpose. How were they to say they didn't have feelings, couldn't sense what was going on?
He knew from browsing what muggles lovingly referred to as the internet, that some scientists and people believed that insects didn't hold feelings or pain. The broom wasn't supposed to either. But it did.
His hand shook as he reached out and wrapped his fingers around the wand loosely. It was all mechanical, all numb. How was it right to try these curses on creatures that could bear feelings, could sense pain? Wasn't that like attempting it on a student?
Sense pain. Sense anger. Feed anger. That's what the Professor had said. Wouldn't it fail then? If their logic was that the curse was based on anger and that spiders didn't feel, wouldn't it not work.
His fingers tightened. It wasn't supposed to work for them. He pointed at the jar, at one of what he thought was perhaps the elderly spiders that had passed its years. Just in case this worked, even a little. He didn't have any anger towards them. No hate, no loathing. Only pity. He briefly wondered if you could kill with pity.
Then the word was tumbling from his lips, like a dead stone falling through the ground. No meaning, no emotion, no desire to succeed. Just 'crucio'.
The spider seemed to blink at him as if wondering what he was trying to do. | |

Trying again Allison rose her wand and took in an unsteady breath, "Krushio!" and a light purple spark came out of her wand. She was really nervous. Something she had never imagined. But Defense against the Dark Arts was learning how to defend themselves from such things. Not perform them! "Cruzio!" Allison spoke firmly. Nothing. The spider took it as an opportunity to move side to side. "Krucio!" she yelped with her nervousness coming back to her. "Kratos!" Oh Bloody hell that was a video game character! Please don't let Professor Duskurk notice I'm reciting Tales! Please please please please! "C-r-u-c-i-o!" Allison saw it this way. Since she didn't have the guts to say the curse out loud, how about spelling it? This time the spider stood and stared at Allison as if she had gone insane. "Crucio!" Allison finally said. Something inside her moved. But nothing happened on the outside. It was impossible for such a girl her age to perform such a terrible spell. After all, she had nothing and no one to hate. Sure she disliked her family and their ways. True she had already learned to detest oh-so-very slightly certain people. But hate wasn't something in her vocabulary. The only thing she had managed to do was make the spider twitch. And even then she doubted it had anything to do with what she had just casted.

The legs of Kiri's chair scraped across the floor loudly as she stood up. Her heart was beating fast in her chest now, and she was definitely uneasy. Despite what she'd thought earlier, this wasn't just another spell they were going to learn in one of their classes, this was one of the three most dangerous and evil ones. She stopped twirling the wand through her fingers and pointed it at the spider.
She was a bit relieved to see that she was holding it perfectly steady.
"Crucio, Crucio," she mumbled to herself a few times, trying to get a feel for the word she'd read in various history books and Dark Arts treatises so often. It felt alien to say it aloud with the intent to actually use it.
The spider scuttled about in its cage, and Kiri wondered how on Earth she - or anyone, for that matter - was going to become as angry as needed for the spell to work. As it was, she possibly felt a little sorry for the spider, although she was sure that she would not be able to successfully cast the Cruciatus anyway.
Kiri went back to twirling her wand for a few moments, then took aim a second time. Eyes narrowed, she hissed, "Crucio!"
The spider didn't even stop in its scurrying. Kiri was relieved to see that - which was probably the problem to begin with. She had no desire to do anything to the little thing.

Avery had never even thought about using these spells before, even it WAS on a spider. Scary, she thought, but hey she'd give it a whirl. Avery pulled out her shiny brand new wand. She pointed at the spider and said "Crucio" with as much courage as she could manage. As she figured not a darn thing happened. "Crucio" she said hoping to see a change, but the spider just tried to scury away off the table. Avery didn't have the guts to grab it and bring it back so she let it run away. and just pulled out the next spider brough out the next spider in the box. "Crucio?" she questioned. She thought she saw a leg twitch....but maybe she just made that up to make her feel better. She put the spider back in the box and waited to see if anyone else could do the unforgiveable curse. | |

Arya reached in her box and got out her spider. Smiling at the spider, she let him crawl across her hand as she listened to the professor. "Hmm, lets call you Spencer...Spencer the spider." She became worried when the pofessor told the how to preform the Cruciatus Curse. Where in the world was she supose to get this anger from? And why would she want to harm Spencer? She wasn't liking this professor much. Placing Spencer on the table and pointed her wand at him. After about a few minutes she half-heartedly said "Crucio." When nothing happened she breathed a sigh of releif.

Blinking, William opened his mouth wide and gulped, his tongue hanging out like some simple-minded dog. Mr. Evil wanted them to perform illegal spells that could land them all in Azkaban?!? Did this guy even know what this would entitle?!? The ramifications of what could happen made William even more angry than what he was already. His hand shook as he picked up the wand on the desk, staring at the spider in front of him with shaking eyes.
Dropping his wand on the desk again he stared at the spider, trying to calm himself down before he exploded and got himself turned into a frog or worse - a llama. Llamas terrified him, even more than Mr. Evil and Kazi. Those things creeped him out beyond reason. But he had to do it; taking a deep breath he whispered, "Crucio." the incantation along wasn't good to utter, not when his history was like it was.
"Crucio, Crucio, Crucio." he uttered again, one after the other biting back a cry and turning tail and run. He had to do it though, he knew he could. The spider seemed to notice what was going to happen though and skittered back a bit. "I'm sorry little buddy." he whispered picking up his wand, the spider in the box reminding him of Goldie his tarantula.
Suddenly his anger over his cousin and all the problems she brought on to him overcame him and his eyes crinkled as a rage beyond anything burst through him. Pointing the wand at the box he nearly said "CRUCIO!!!!!!" and waited to see what could happen as his hand shook.

Adrienne gulped slightly as Professor Duskurk went on to inform them they were starting with the Cruciatus Curse. Well, I guess that's better than him going straight to having us use the Killing Curse on the poor creepy spiders, she thought, glancing around at some of the other students. At least it looked as if none of them had absolute hatred for their spiders, since none of the arachnids looked to be in excruciating pain. And that was going to be her problem. Thinking her spider was creepy wasn't going to do anything. But then, maybe failing to cast the curse meant they couldn't get in trouble either.
Trying to work up any sort of derision for the animal, she kept blinking as her spider almost seemed like it was looking at her pleadingly. Which actually made it even more creepy, really. Pointing her wand at the spider, even though inwardly she felt this was going to be one of her first failed attempts at casting a spell, she tried to speak forcefully. "Crucio." Glancing down at the spider, she saw pretty much no difference. And, looking around the room, she saw that most of the others were struggling too. That made her feel safer, in a way, along with the fact Livvy seemed almost against the lesson. As the Head Girl goes, so go I, she thought, hoping she wasn't about to get hexed or anything.

Mina had a sinking feeling at the thought of actually using the Cruciatus be it on a spider or not. It didn't seem right, but again how does one defend oneself against something if they don't understand it. Biting her lip, she looked at the spider before her. She didn't like spiders but did she want to hurt it. It had yet to hurt her, but she didn't know for sure if it did have intentions of harming her later.
Raising her wand with a worried face, she pointed her wand and said the incantation with very little force. The spider just blinked at her, well she thought it was blinking. It has way too many eyes for her to really know. "I really don't want to hurt you but I have to practice, sorry." Why was she even reasong with it? Shaking her head she tried again. Professor Duskurk said you had to put your hatred into the spell, but how much hatred did a twelve year old really have?
Thinking about any thing and everything that could possible make her angry, she raised her wand again and pointed at the spider. "Crucio" she said with a little more force. Wait, was that a noise from the spider? Was it blinking at her again? No, it was just staring at her again. | |

Avery poked the spider with her wand, not doing anything at first. She mostly poked it because she liked to poke strange things. Avery glared at the spider. She idn't like spiders too much to begin with so it was easy to loath it. "Crucio", she hissed.The spider twitched but didn't squeal in agony or squirm as if it was being tortured.

She had no choice but to do what the professor said, right? Well. Of course she did, but she had to have the courage to do it. Technically it wasn't illegal... according to the professor... so... maybe it'd be all right. Heck. If it weren't for the good grade, Livvy would've left long ago. Taking a deep breath and sighing, the girl took out her wand and gripped it tightly. She wiped at her forehead, trying to wipe away the beads of sweat dribbling down her forehead. But it was dry. BLEERGGH. So nervous!
Livvy eyed the spider, her stomach filled with butterflies and she felt like she was going to be sick. But she knew that it was all the fear talking to her and making her think that way.
Pointing her wand at it, she squeaked out a "Crucio". Cough. Livvy cleared her throat and shook her head. No response of course. "Crucio." Still no effect. 'Course not. With such a weak voice as hers and no confidence nor will... it was highly likely that the spider would even move an inch. | |

Emily was very uncomfortable. She did not want to torture anything, even if it was a spider. But she had two choices; spell, or leave.
With a sigh Emily pointed her wand at the spider.
"Crucio." She said it without much emotion, except nervousness. She didn't know if she really wanted anything to happen. Nothing did.
"Crucio." Again, nothing. Emily wasn't sure if she was disappointed she couldn't do it or relieved she couldn't do it.

Alexa looked around and to her great relief none of the others were accomplishing the spell either.
Raising her wand and turning her attention back to the spider on her desk she said, "Crucio" Each time she said that dreadful incantation she felt her insides clench. As soon as she saw that there was no effect she breathed a sigh of relief. She didn't want to hurt anyone or anything... Dude she was only 12. Oliver watched the spider scurry around on the desk with morbid interest. He held out his hand and let it crawl onto his palm and then held it up to his eyes and studied it as it stayed perfectly still. He pulled a face. He felt kinda bad for what he was about to do. "Sorry, mate", He mumbled softly,
He placed his hand back on the desk and poked the spider's back legs gently with his finger to get it to crawl back onto the desk. He took aim with his wand and closed one eye, his face crinkled with concentration. “Crucio.” He muttered.
Aaaaaaand...
Nothing. *sigh.* Not even a twinge. Oliver obviously didn't mean it.
He straightened up and looked around to see how everyone else was doing.
hmm.. about as well as him.

Wide eyed, the Hufflepuff watched the professor talk. Wesley was not stupid. She knew what was coming. She knew what they were going to do. What she was going to do.
What she didn't want to do.
Biting her lip, she stared around the room, watching for someone to say they couldn't do it. Because Merlin knew she wasn't going to say it first. Quote:

"Now, we shall start with the Cruciatus Curse, sometimes known as the Torture Curse as it inflicts terrible, agonizing pain if properly cast. The trick to casting to put all your hatred into the spell. Therefore, one way you can attempt to ease the pain is to try not to aggravate your attacker. Making him angry will only increase the potency of the spell. The incantation is 'Crucio' and there is no special wand movement other than making sure you are pointing at the right target. Anyone caught attempting this curse on a fellow student, whether by purpose or not, will be expelled," Professor Duskurk said and locked gazes with each of the students before continuing. "You will have ten minutes to practice starting now."

Wand in her left hand, Daphne did her best to focus. She was, by all means, willing to give her best. Whether she liked the spider or not was out of the question. This was the practical part of the class and as such she was going to do well.
And if she could help it, she'd do better than well, she'd do really good. Great even. Except that probably was a stretch. About to close her eyes, Daphne met Celandine's gaze.
She looked a bit uncomfortable, but not the kind she, herself was feeling. Something more of the type of uncomfortable when you were trying to keep something hidden from others. Smiling grimly at her best friend, Daphne tried to shut her eyes again but there was a commotion on the desk next to her.
The commotion of Neptune Bott, of course. Sighing, Daphne tightened her fingers around her wand. "All you're going to manage like that is giving your spider a contusion, Neptune," mumbled the blond for the--err, younger blond before raising her left arm.
"Crucio," she muttered, no will or intent going into the incantation at all. When had been the last time she had feelings of hate, disgust, repugnance? She couldn't recall. Maybe she needed to close her eyes again.
The spider though, seemed to be almost disappointed as it just stood there looking up at her with confused glassy eyes. "What? You think I look like I could attack you too?"
That seemed to be the general consensus as of late.

She didn't like this. Poor spider. Even though he said it wasn't illegal on the spider, still. Maybe Imperio she might feel better about, if they really were allowed to do it, because it would only be controlling, not hurting. This Professor was crazy, and scary. Waaaaaaaaay worse then Kazmeriz, or whatever. But she wouldn't be able to perform the spell, right? She was only fourteen, and she did not have hate for anyone, certainly not spiders.
"Cru-crucio." She said, her wand pointing at the spider, who didn't even look up in her direction. She'd expected that, she was nervous to hurt the spider, so even if she was really good at advanced spells, she wouldn't have a chance in doing it. But she had to try.
"Crucio!" Nothing happened, again. Natasha very much considered leaving now, or just not coming back to this class again. She'd stay for now, though. Be a good student and everything. But she had no hate, and her voice shook tentatively. This was never going to work, and she felt kinda glad.

Marie grabbed her wand and looked at the spider, trying to think of something hateful. Unable to think at the moment she just watched the spider run around a little. Then the spider started to crawl towards her, which sort of freaked her out a little bit. Pointing her wand at the spider she said "Crucio" while thinking how much she hated things crawling on her.
Watching the spider it just kept coming at her. 'Rats, now what?' Not wanting to touch the creepy little thing she blew on it to make it go in the other direction.

Becca was mad. She did NOT want to do this, but it was too late to turn back now. She rolled her eyes and almost said sorry to the spider. Raising her wand, she said "Crucio." Nothing. Again, "Crucio!" It twitched! 'Oh god! Why am I doing this?' one part of her said while the other said -You're doing it so you'll pass the class!- 'But maybe I don't want to live with the fact that I'm ruining something's life? I don't want to think about that' -But it's not like you think when you step outside each day and kill a score of ants underneath your foot.- 'Well you know what?'.....All this conflict Becca had was giving her a headache, so she decided she'd tried it, and she didn't need anymore practice.~There, both sides win [kinda]. Now stop arguing!!~ So she put her wand down and crossed her arms for the remainder of the time.

Okay, Destiny could do this.
No, she couldn't.
Why would this man be teaching them how to do the curses? He should be teaching them how to protect themselves from them. Ahh, whatever. Destiny didn't write the lesson plans.
Carefully, Destiny picked up one of the spiders. Aww! It was so cute and defenseless. Putting it on the desk, she pointed her wand at the spider and closed her eyes, 'Crucio?' Opening her eyes one at a time, Destiny was relieved that the spider was still in it's upward position and not in pain.
Ehh, she felt dirty after that.

hmm.. about as well as him. Miranda kept glancing at Oliver, wondering if he was able to do the spell. It hadn't occured to Miranda that they were going to be hurting living creatures. Sure, she didn't really find crawlies cute, but that didn't mean they deserved to be tortured.
She poked the spider to get it to stand still on the desk and began to bite her thumb nail. She held her wand, pointing it at the spider, looking like she was close to tears. "Crucio..." she mumbled.
Nothing happened, ofcourse.
Miranda didn't want to do this. But, she wanted to be an Auror.
Straightening up and with a frown of concentration, she pointed at the spider with her wand. "Crucio!" The spider scurried away and she yelped. Oh Merlin...this is not fun. | |

ooc: Aaron Anderson.
Aaron loked at his spider. It was so defenseless. He couldn't harm it. What was the point? But nonetheless, Aaron pointed his wand at it. "Cru...Crucio." Absolutely nothing happened. As Aaron expected it. He looked at everyone around the room to see most people struggling with it as well. At least I'm not the only one.
Well, there was no way Aaron was going to do it. So he might as well have fun with it. Aaron poked one of it's legs his his finger and watched his spider wriggle around a bit. Aaron then pointed his wand at the spider and said, "Wingardium Leviosa," quietly and let his spider float in the air just off the desk. He looked around again at other people to see what they were doing.
