Neptune was so over listening to everyone give their answers. No one had given the answer she would have supplied, had she felt inclined to bring attention to herself. SHE would have said that for all her purposes, HE, himself, Mr. Durskurk (unfortunate name, no?) was the decider upon what was to deemed Dark or not. Did not their grades depend on what HE decided?

Neptune had a mind of her own, no doubt about it, but she was going to go with whatever this man said as to what was Dark or not.

That being said, she happily cleared her desk and located her wand. She'd just gotten a new sparkly handle put on hers - designer and all the rage in fashion this year. Neptune sighed loudly at all the people asking questions: The instructions had been clear, right? If you don't like it - leave. This wasn't question and answer session. While she waited, Neptune found Kellen and daydreamed a bit about him.

Bella stared at the spiders.
"Ooooohhhhh, spiders!!!, eeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeeek" she thought wile taking deep breathes. Spiders were one of the things that scared her the most. Well they would be torturing the spiders so maybe this wouldn't be so bad. She then cleared everything off of her desk and took our her 12.5 inch (that had wood that looked the color of gold with heart shapes engraved in it) and got ready.

"wait this would be hurting an animal and isn't this illegal?" she asked herself in though.

... This guy was nuts.

Torin raised his hand. "Um, Professor, couldn't we get into big trouble for this? It's sorta illegal." He frowned. He didn't want to use these curses even if they were on a spider.

And he didn't even mind spiders all that much. He had had to adopt a tarantula not too long before.

Daphne hadn't spoken. It wasn't that she didn't have anything to say it just didn't seem like she had to say it all. Her fellow students had spoken plenty, and asked plenty and looked all around uncomfortable. Scratching the side of her neck, Daphne slipped her left hand into her robes to pull it out.

"Oh my! Spiders!" Choluna was terrified of spiders, but of course she wouldn't just walk out of the class! She took out her wand, and- "Wait! Isn't it illegal to harm animals- even spiders?" she asked Melanie and Herminny, the girls next to her. Choluna was only a 2nd year student, and they were 4th year, so she thought maybe they would know!

William had been quiet the whole time class had been in session, he was more interested in the practical lesson, not the verbal boring part. He wanted to do something, not take notes and be, well bored. It wasn't that he didn't like taking notes, not if the two parchments full of writing in font of him were any indication, but he was more of a do-it-yourself person. So instead of involving himself, he placed his wand on the desk and looked at the mighty scary professor, gulping. This should be interesting.

Avery was scared of spiders...more than anything she was scared of spiders. She let out a shriek as soon as she saw them. "Spiders have too many legs" she said no one imparticular. Avery really wanted to learn so she decided she was going to suck it up and work with the spiders.

Brant just watched the other students talking about these spiders. "So what they are spiders" thought brant.

Nicoletta pulled her wand out of the pocket of her robes. Spipers were easy, all you had to do is squish them. She had never been scared of them so this sounded interesting.

Unforgivable?? Did he just say that? Kay looked at her spider as she put her things away. She looked at Marie and then Georgia. Were they really going to do this. Kay pulled her wand out and waited to hear which one they would start with. Looking at the poor thing in front of her, she sighed. "sorry little thing."

Jack had NEVER intended to use an Unforgiveable Curse EVER. Seriously. He had never thought about using the curses during his lifetime, and he was quite positive he would never be in a situation that REQUIRED him to use one. GAHHHH if only he weren't Head Boy! He'd skip this class for sure in the future but...that wouldn't look good for his rep.

Gulping, he took out his wand and sighed. Maybe the professor would actually let them volunteer to do this, rather than forcing them? He looked around at everyone saying how illegal they were...OBVIOUSLY they were illegal! He was sure the professor knew, and he was also sure that he didn't care one BIT that that was the case. He just hoped the dude didn't actually use the spell on the STUDENTS because they kept asking that nonsense question. Gulp.

Okay, now Marie was convinced that this professor was off his rocker. He wanted students to perform unforgivables, he had to be nuts. This class was suppose to teach how to defend against dark magic, not teach how to do it. Not wanting to seem scared though, she put all her things under her desk, except for the spider of course. Taking out her wand she laid it on her desk next to the spider and whispered, "I hope for your sake I do not succeed at this."

"You may be excused. Please leave," Professor Duskurk said and gestured to the door before addressing the rest of the students who decided it better to speak than to obey.

"The Unforgiveable Curses are only illegal if performed on a person, be they muggle, witch, or wizard. They're use on other creatures is up for debate. I would not recommend, for example, attempting to use one of these curses on a centaur. We are perfectly within our rights to use these spiders for our practice and please let me remind you that I would find it incredibly unlikely for any of you to successfully cast these spells, so the point is moot."

"Spiders are useful potions ingredients but will not save you from an unforgiveable curse. The imperius curse may be fought by strength of will alone. The cruciatus curse can be deflected with certain spells. The only sure defense for the killing curse is to avoid it. Only very rare circumstances will allow you to survive a well aimed killing curse," he said and thought that might make a good homework question as well.

"No, these curses are not 'sorta illegal'. These curses ARE illegal," Professor Duskurk clarified and nearly had a stroke at the number of students asking or telling him that it was 'sorta illegal'. Dear Merlin and Lainey's secret notes but these children were a sorry lot. Not a promising one among them unless they were hidden by the shear stupidity of the rest.


"Now, we shall start with the Cruciatus Curse, sometimes known as the Torture Curse as it inflicts terrible, agonizing pain if properly cast. The trick to casting to put all your hatred into the spell. Therefore, one way you can attempt to ease the pain is to try not to aggravate your attacker. Making him angry will only increase the potency of the spell. The incantation is 'Crucio' and there is no special wand movement other than making sure you are pointing at the right target. Anyone caught attempting this curse on a fellow student, whether by purpose or not, will be expelled," Professor Duskurk said and locked gazes with each of the students before continuing. "You will have ten minutes to practice starting now."



ooc: Consider your character's abilities when role playing this lesson. It is highly unlikely that many will see any result at all and even more unlikely for anyone to perfect it. Unrealistic role play will lead to certain death (or other headmaster-approved consequence if he won't let me kill you). ~TD

Was this guy crazy?! Yes. The answer was yes. Crazier than Kaziwhatevaaaa. Which is saying much, considering Kaziwhatevaaaaa was probably the craziest person that Livvy knew. But no. This guy totally trumphed Kazi. He made Kazi look like a fly or a little deformed potato in a potato patch. UNFORGIVABLE CURSES? Was this guy insane? Someone needed to tell the Headmaster! He wanted them to perform them?

Ahem. CRAZY.

Livvy wanted to hide in her own little corner and stay there forever and never leave. NO WAY was she doing this. But. But. She had to. Dang House Cup, making her do this stuff. Personally, the stuff that the professor was doing to the spider didn't really matter to her, it was the fact that HE was gonna make THEM do THAT.

Illegal curses? In class? Well now, that's different! Kate thought to herself. Yes, she did hate spiders, and yes, they did make her a bit squeamish, but she was really curious. Taking out her wand, she looked at her spider, slightly unsure but ready to try. And hey, if all else fails, she can just step on it by accident...

Brant had his spider and he pulled his wand out of his cloak. Man he didn't really want to hurt this spider but this was class. "Sorry Spider" Brant whispered to it. he said the words he didn't want to say "Crucio" The spiders leg twitched and that was it, The spider didn't even notice any thing "Erm, Sir My spider really didn't do anything. But I thought I noticed one of his legs moving, why can't someone just say the spell and for it to happen?" Brant was kind of happy that he didn't cause any harm to the spider, but felt sad for not doing well in the class.

Alexa did not meet Duskurk's eyes as he glared at the students. She was not really looking forward to using the Cruciatus Curse... even if she knew she didn't have the hatred within herself to perform the spell anyway... it just plain old creeped her out.

But for fear of being turned into stone or something by Creepy McCreeperton over there she pointed her wand at the creepy crawly 8 legged critter and said, "Crucio" She was not surprised in the least when nothing happened.

Although she did feel pretty icky for even having attempted such a disgusting spell. Raising her wand she tried again, "Crucio" she said in a forceful voice... Still, nothing at all.

No fair. He didn't want to leave. But he didn't want to kill any spiders either. Biting hard on his lip, Jake stayed firmly where he was but shrunk down in his seat. He didn't like this class, but leaving... would be bad.

"I duhh-duh-didn't ssssay I wwwwanted to luuhhh-leave," the boy murmured, namely to his sister as he stared down at the desk. Despite how scary the man was, and the way he challenged the laws that had been built up in Jake's mind, the boy was intruiged. He'd try and stay.

Even though it totally WAS illegal. Poor Charlie-like creatures. Everytime he saw these things he thought of his pet tarantula.

Georgiana closed her eyes and thought about her hatred about the injustice of her best friends situation. It just wasn't fair. She concentrated on it, feeling incredibly angry before pointing her wand at the spider. "Crucio!" she hissed. The spider gave a small shudder before it went back to scurrying around, trying to find an escape. She gave a small sigh as her anger disappeared. She knew she'd have a hard time with this. She was a hufflepuff, and they usually weren't very angry. Especially not her.

Wait, WHAT?! They were....they were....they were performing illegal spells on each other! What kind of class was this? Nikki took her wand out, but didn't say anything. She just stared at the little spider in front of her. What had it done to her? Well besides being the most hideous thing she had ever seen. Looking up, Nikki looked at the other students. Most of them seemed nervous too. Oh my god, she couldn't do this...but she could try right?

Hand shaking, she lifted her wand and pointed at the spider. "I'm sorry." She whispered quietly. She then gathered up all her courage and hissed, "C-cruio." The spider shook a little but nothing happened. At least nothing that looked like the spider was being tortured.

Perform the Cruciatus curse? Yeah right! Kellen rolled up his sleeves and gave his spider a look that said 'if you're an animagus you've got nothing to worry about'. Seriously, he didn't have enough rage and anger in him to cast this.

"Crucio."

The spider rubbed its back two legs together, dragging a line of web across the desk.

"Oh, come on, that's just mean..."

Cela had been listening very closely to the lesson, her expression quite interested. The thing was, she was not bothered about the whole unforgivable thing, having been exposed to them from a young age, though she was of the opinion that there were worse curses out there. The idea that there were only three dark spells that were considered unforgivable was a strange one. It didn't really limit dark wizards in anyway, even those that didn't break the law could still cast some nasty curses.

Imperius fought off by strength of will alone? Cela's eyes flicked up at that, a thoughtful expression on her face. So had it been Cope's will o her love that had allowed him to fight it off the term before? Or a combination of the two.

Practicing Crucio? Cela glanced around the room, her eyes locking on Daphne's. Though their families had similarities when it came to money and blood, perhaps this was where the true difference was?

"Crucio." She repeated under her breath. "Crucio."

The trick was not to be scared of the incantation. Cela had been taught that was the main thing with the unforgivables, the incantations were words of power, power given not by the effect of the spell so much as by the fact that they were unforgivable.

The thing was... she'd cast it before.

She looked around at the others in the class a bit nervously. Maybe this was one that she shouldn't get right? She stroked the spider gently with her little finger.

"Crucio." she whispered again, her wand not yet drawn.

The cruciatus curse. Something she never did before. In fact, none of these spells she's used, yet she'd studied them before. "Professor. How would we know if we did the spell correctly? I mean, even though you said that none of us would probably achieve the spells...it's a spider. It doesn't have a voice. Would it just like, fall down or something?" Though just the thought of hurting it was satisfactory enough...

Herminny did not like the idea of hurting a spider but they were only practicing and most people could not do it anyway so why fuss she thought knowing it would only get her into detention and besides she knew sh did not have to really try if she did not want to. she out her wand and pointed it at the spider and with a blank mind said, "crucio", nothing happened which is what she knew would be the outcome and she had tried so surely I'll recieve credit she thought as she put her wand away.

Kay listened to the professor and then looked at her spider. She remember the stories Harry had told her about Moody and showing them this in his class. Kay wondered if she would be able to do this. Pointing her wand at the spider. "Crucio." Kay said shaking a bit. She watched to see what would happen, but it looked like nothing was going on with the spider.
